Jaz my beloved, hello!! So, I no longer have those wips, they have now been turned into fics Monster Like Me, Second Chances (Friendline has now become Second Chances)

However! I do have new wips, so I will be doing another tag game, so the WIP I'm going to be talking about in this ask is one that I'm currently working on: Curse of the Mermaid (how fitting for MerMay).

Anyways, it's a K&H story (to the surprise of no one) and it's a JunChun one! I've been doing a lot of YueZhi ones so every now and then I like to sprinkle in some JunChun because my boys need love too. Anyways, it's based off of the BL manga Kanashiki Ningyo where in that story, a young tattoo artist named Umi is born with a curse of a mermaid, as he has a jet black right eye and a birthmark that looks like scales running down the entire right side of his body. He hides those birthmarks with a tattoo and continues living, only to encounter a swindling spirit medium named Mikagi. Love happens.

In my story, Yu Tangchun has the curse of the mermaid, only he doesn't cover it up and instead is a brothel singer instead of a tattoo artist. Zhan Junbai is a swindling spirit medium with a secret of his own (which won't be revealed until later in the story). Chu Min and Liu Li are also in the story but they are koi fish spirits as Umi in the manga has two fish spirits that accompany him, Nishiki, a koi fish, and Kuro, a goldfish. However, I like the idea of two koi fish spirits, so that's what we're doing. Zhao Jingming is in this story as well and he is a bastard as ever.

A year was about to pass since the ninth generation made their debut on “Maji Desuka Suka” when Morning Musume welcomed yet another batch of new kids into the fold in “Pyoko Pyoko Ultra.” The later waves now outnumbered the veterans with two-thirds of the lineup consisting of the ninth and tenth generations. Just to give a picture, most of the rookies were born around the time when Morning Musume debuted as an institution. Most were old enough to attend kindergarten when then-leader Risa Niigaki got added to the group.

Like the recent ska-inspired release, “Pyoko Pyoko Ultra” mostly benefits the fresh young faces of the group. The dinky techno-pop production calls back to their more novelty-leaning efforts in the past like Mini Moni. The titular onomatopoeic hook similarly takes itself a lot less seriously than the group’s series of dramatic R&B from a few year’s back -- it’s inspired by the sound of baby chicks. Sticking firmly to the silliness, the idols wear chick-inspired costumes for their TV performances with Niigaki appropriately as the head hen.

It’s eye-opening to see Niigaki here now in the same position as her seniors back when they promoted “Go Girl ~Koi No Victory~.” She was then one of the youngest, and the speedy drum ‘n’ bass beat functioned as the springboard to launch the fresh energy that only she could bring to the table as a new addition of the group. The gap between members is once again apparent as it was then, and it’s made even more explicit as they get fitted in those baby-chick costumes.

“Pyoko Pyoko Ultra” also served as the title track to Suugaku Joshi Gakuen, a high-school drama show starring members of Morning Musume as well as other Hello! Project groups. Fittingly, the song tells a narrative of a schoolgirl trying to find her place. They cheer themselves up on their own efforts to look the prettiest and be the best in school while fighting the temptations to eat junk food late at night. Remove the image of the idols in baby-chick costumes, and it’s a standard message song driven by a familiar bubbly enthusiasm and a series of seemingly unrelated banalities.
