English
I'll blow life into your lips that no longer speak And tonight 'you' will be revived to how you once were
The white-faced woman coughed, “I offer this body to you.” The white-clothed doctor whispered, “I will see to you.” The white-faced woman began to rot away, forsaken by all in the world The white-clothed doctor sympathised with her, taking her to a hidden place where she could sleep in peace
Although decayed, the woman’s face remained beautiful In the mausoleum that only the two knew of, the doctor fell in love
Is this eternal love, or a forbidden act? I merely wish to see you again, if that’s a sin, for what reason?
I'll blow life into your lips that no longer speak Tonight we will be wed, without anyone’s blessing bestowed upon us
“Blue-tinted glass to fill your decayed eye sockets…” “Silk ribbons to mend the torn skin on your arms…” “Cotton gauze for your damaged organs…” “A bejewelled white dress for you…”
Should she decay, the doctor would simply fix it Professing his love, he continually dyed his hands
In the end, an unsightly beast was uncovered The doctor who created ‘it’ passionately protested
“This is our eternal love! This was her wish!” “Weren’t you the ones who forsook this woman and left her to die?!” Ah, the pitiful bride remains silent
Tonight the pair will be judged by the righteousness of those who forsook the woman Who in this case is truly in the right?

Kyara Makura (伽羅枕)
Tumblr media
The Kuchi-e (Frontispiece) for Ozaki Kouyou’s novel of the same name; artwork by Takeuchi Keishū. The literal translation of “Kyara Makura” is Agarwood Pillow. It was a wooden pillow with drawers so that incense could be burned inside. It had been mainly used by those in the Red Light District.
Novel Description Translation:
Born in Gion, sold in Shimabara, and became famous in Yoshiwara, this is the story of Sadayū. As it continues to unfold the many brilliant stories surrounding her, the author's brush reaches its full potential, vividly capturing the state of times and the underbelly of humanity in appearance and richness. It’s one of the masterpieces of Meiji Era brothel literature and Kouyou’s first full-length novel.
Wiki Summary Translation:
Osen was the child of a Geiko from Gion and Mizuno Iwami-no-Kami, a Hatamoto on duty in the capital. After the death of her mother, she was taken in by a rice trader named Nishiokaya and raised in luxury. At the age of 12, her adoptive family went bankrupt and was sold to a bald man in Shimabara as a “stepping stone to tamanokoshi**”. At 16 years old, her fee was paid off by a retired man—then after his passing, became the mistress of a samurai in the capital. Wishing to see her father, she begs to come with him into Edo, but shortly after, the samurai dies and all that remains is a child she bares. At a loss, she visits the Iwami-no-Kami residence to find that her father had died 17 years earlier.
Hearing that her half-sister—who‘s the wife of a high-ranking man—missed her, she waits at Ueno Yamashita to meet her. However, the attendants of the Kago her half-sister rode scolded her and didn't let her get close. At the age of 22, in order to survive with resilience and a feeling of rebellion, she sent her baby to another and immersed herself in Yoshiwara, where she became an Oiran. She spent her dramatic, tumultuous years with the spirit and skill of a prostitute in Kofu at 28. Finally, she became a servant of a 67 year old man with leprosy in Kajikazawa. With the heartfelt wish to “extinguish the immeasurable amount of indiscretion that can be created”, she gently nursed him back to recovery.
As she cuts her black hair, she also cuts off the men that come into her life again and again. Till she’s 62 years old and onward, she secluded herself in a home within Dangozaka to enshrine the 34 departed souls of prostitutes.
(**tamanokoshi (玉の輿): I wasn’t entirely comfortable trying to put it into something concise, but it’s an expression that means money and status gained by marrying a rich and powerful man.)

Fun BSD French translation details and choices - Episode 17 (by someone who does not understand Japanese but thinks the differences with the English translation/subtitles are fun)
General notes:
Kouyou's ability is called "Or démoniaque" (Demonic Gold).
Kouyou called Mori "Monsieur Ougai". I know she calls him "Ougai-dono" in the Japanese dub, but to call someone "Mr [first name]" in French has the connotation of them being a preschool teacher or something sdkjfhskdjf
Lovecraft'S voice actor is so funny. He has the voice you would expect to hear on some kind of large, benevolent, homely creature. Maybe a cuddly bear. He sounds less menacing and more like he ended up in the wrong role, but it still fits his "why am I here I just want to sleep" vibe.
Steinbeck and Lovecraft's abilities are just literal translations of their English counterparts. "Les Raisins de la colère" (The Grapes of Wrath/Anger) and "Le Grand Ancien" (The Great Old One/Ancient).
Chuuya called Kouyou "Madame Kouyou" in front of Mori, in an uncharacteristic show of politeness. French dub Chuuya is just some guy to whom wild stuff happens.
Something I just noticed is that in the French subs, Mori calls Elise "Éris". Understandable, but oops.
Atsushi uses the informal "you" (tu) with Kouyou.
Today's quote:
Tumblr media
VF: Fini de jouer, ma belle. On passe aux choses sérieuses. (We're done playing, gorgeous. Let's get serious.) Eng: This is not for the eyes of children.

Interpreting the symbolism of The GazettE - part 2 - The Guitars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I 1st saw pic1 I thought - it's the Yin-Yang guitars! The way Aoi is holding his makes no sense otherwise. And when I got to read the interview translation from pic2, Kai pretty much confirmed it for me:
"Kai: Aoi is a very skillful musician, he absorbs everything around him, letting it go through himself and then gives it out, without pretence, with his own sound."
Indiscriminately absorbing all the feelings is the most textbook definition of Yin.
Yin is the feeling, the subjective, absorption, the darkness & the negative (and we will get to what negative means further in the article, spoiler - it's not "bad").
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Aoi says things like this: "Actually, I don’t think (*laughs*).  Nah, the truth is I feel." (It's from Guitar Book interview where he is with Uruha and yet again holding his guitar upside down)
The way they are styled - Aoi always in black, flowy outfits that merge with shadows and Uruha always light and flashy. Even when whole band is dressed in black, Uruha is wearing something white or uses a white guitar.
All of Aoi's guitars are black. The snake skin textured one always makes me think of Ouroboros, one of the oldest and most popular symbols of transformation and occult (hidden) knowledge.
Uruha's real name is 広揚 Kouyou. The 2nd kanji is literally Yang and the name translates to something like "immense sunlight"
Tumblr media
The rhythm and lead guitar correspond really well to Yin-Yang as well. Rhythm being the darkness that let's the stars (lead guitar) shine.
More from the Guitar Magazine (September 2015) interview translated by @mizmyerz :
"Kai: Uruha is a type of a musician who’s going by touch - he experiences an internal conflict, fixates on it and thus the new sound is born. Reita: I think they both work hard to improve oneself. It’s so interesting to observe how they become similar at one point and then go in reverse at another. Kai: To me, at the very beginning neither of them had his own unique sound, but they were able to find and express it thanks to one another. Ruki: Uruha is very meticulous, prone to theoretical thinking. Aoi is serious and more realistic. Reita: Uruha first thinks of an image and then develops a theory based on it. Aoi's reasoning is very realistic, he always, let me say it, hits the core."
...
But let's dig deeper and talk about DOGMA album.
From the Black B-Pass (2015) interview, once again translation by @mizmyerz (you can find both interviews on her blog and reblogged on mine):
"Uruha: First of all, even though we want to distance ourselves from visual kei, we don’t mind the visual scene itself. We’ve been pushed forward by visual kei, received the impulse, it was like a stencil, so it’s still very important to us, but the current visual scene seized to be attractive. Furthermore, several years ago we wanted to expand our presence within the genre, we aimed to grow and evolve, but at some point it started to limit us, to hold us back, that’s why now we’re moving in a different direction. Of course, it created a solid ground under our feet. Then again, you must bring in something unique to arouse interest. Because of that, when you can’t find a way out, you start looking inside yourself. In other words DOGMA became a turning point for us, since it feels like recently the band itself turned around and changed the course."
The bold part of the quote is best explained by Kenneth Grant in "Outer Gateways":
"There is another faculty of human consciousness, the intuitive or 'inseeing' faculty; one might almost describe it as the fourth dimensional faculty. It is a faculty that appears sometimes in the artist, the poet, the occultist, and in a certain kind of scientist, and it functions also, though rarely, in almost everybody. It is epitomized on the Tree of Life by the third sephira, Binah, the Sphere of Understanding. Not the understanding of empirical things, but that insight into the hidden side of things made possible by a sudden total identity of the mind with its substratum, pure consciousness, wherein all ideas are stored and which under stands, or stands under, the mechanism of mentation.
The faculty of understanding is incommunicable because it has its origin beyond the Abyss, where human laws of logic and ratiocination do not apply. Hence initiation is necessary before the faculty can be activated and utilised. But such initiation is always and can only be self-initiation; all other forms of initiation are false because necessarily inadequate. [..] The Supernals (Binah, Chokmah, Kether) cannot be contained below the Abyss where the laws of Subject/Objects relationship obtain. Initiation denotes a journey inwards and may only be undertaken by each traveller for and by himself. Initiation and intuition are virtually identical in the sense that the journey leads to absolute Subjectivity which is beyond all subject/objects relationships. [...] Those who achieve successfully this penetration of the veils of Binah are thereafter as it were branded with the most ancient and inscrutable hieroglyphics that remain forever undecipherable by those without the deepest Within of Being.
The Typhonian Way is the Negative Way, the descent from the Mother, i.e. the pre-solar source. Its way of attainment is by reflection, shadow, the negation."
DOGMA album starts with Nihil. Nihilism can mean the dissolution or negation of conventional beliefs, structures, or realities, often as a precursor to a deeper understanding or transformation of consciousness. It might involve the rejection of established moral or religious frameworks (heresy) in pursuit of a more profound spiritual truth.
The Dogma lyrics "I deny everything" always make me want to correct them to "I negate everything" and it's rather easy for me to do so because in my native language deny and negate is the same word. I looked up how it is in Japanese and it seems to also be the same - hitei suru.
Tumblr media
Yin is the Negative and since Aoi is the Yin guitar I've put the 3 DOGMA songs with Aoi guitar solos (and of course It's the songs that are utterly and completely devoted to the goddess) - Goddess, Wasteland and Ominous in a playlist and listened attentively. The 3 of them really felt like a unit, seamless. A menacing feeling building towards something. The solo at the end of Ominous is the culmination point. It expresses so much pain. Listening to it felt like my heart is being torn open. It almost felt like a physical pain. I snapped out of it and my mind immediately went to the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism. Specifically Dukkha (suffering) and Samudaya (roots of suffering).
Then I looked at Ominous lyrics:
Sleep…Count me down…Again So I’ll close my eyes As I turn to face you My prayer shattered into ruins Is reflected in your eyes as you spread your wings to fly I see you whirling with nightmares Through a sky thick with darkness Don’t forget That the heart can’t die Don’t forget Really, dreams don’t always mean what they seem True…Dread Sleep…Count me down…Again This cycle of constant change is ominous I fall into the recurring darkness It steals away my formless future and whenever I step forward The sky darkens until I can no longer see I’m killing myself with loneliness and even my screams Won’t bring any rescue Sleep…Count me down…Again"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For explanation of what the mentioned sleep means we are once again referring to K. Grant's "Outer Gateways":
"Ultimate subjectivity contains the seed of sangsar, as deep sleep contains the latency of thought (dream), which appears only when subjectivity objectivises; sleep then becomes dreaming. The final process is one of objectification, which causes the illusion of a waking state in which the thoughts or dream objects are experienced as 'real'. Total absence of objects (as in deep sleep) is thus the total presence of Subject, whose manifestation then appears phenomenally as Sangsar (the Universe). But this fact is lost sight of when Subject objectivises (i.e. dreams), or objectifies (awakens)."
And going back to Buddhism, to quote Thich Nhat Hanh in "The Heart of Buddha's Teaching" :
"Contemplation on interdependence is a deep looking into all dharmas in order to pierce through to their real nature, in order to see them as part of the great body of reality and in order to see that the great body of reality is indivisible. It cannot be cut into pieces with separate existences of their own.
The object of our mind can be a mountain, a rose, the full moon, or the person standing in front of us. We believe these things exist outside of us as separate entities, but these objects of our perceptions are us. This includes our feeling. When we hate someone, we also hate ourself. The object of our mindfulness is actually the whole cosmos. Mindfulness is mindfulness of the body, feelings, perceptions, any of the mental formations, and all of the seeds in our consciousness. The Four Establishments of Mindfulness contain everything in the cosmos. Everything in the cosmos is the object of our perception, and, as such, it does not exist only outside of us but within us."
Tumblr media
(From the DOGMA book)
The more I dig at The GazettE symbolism, the more I find, it's a boundless trove of riches. It's pretty common for metal bands to use symbols - some dabble in esotericism only a little, others are doing it for the aesthetic or just because everyone does it. For me, as someone who always looks and interprets everything, seeing such an elaborate and detailed esoteric creation is a huge pleasure. The fact that the 5 band members are the ones responsible for every single detail makes it even more impressive.
They are out there on Tool's level when it comes to combining mysticism and music (if you don't know Tool I recommend you listen to Lateralus). By the way I saw a pic of Kai's drum tech wearing a Tool t-shirt, it made me wonder if the GazettE themselves are influenced by them. Somehow I think they are.
Tumblr media
I found Kenneth Grant's works (the author I quoted twice earlier) through Tool's drummer's library on his website. And their vocalist uses a lot of Jungian alchemy terms in their lyrics. I wonder if the Japanese fans sort of see the GazettE like the westerners see Tool.
I did not write much about Uruha but let me leave you with these pictures of him being immense light.

“Talent is not always an ally.”
Kyouka has talents. The ability to stay stealth, to kill, and to make split-second decisions. She has all the talents an assassin would need. But that does not bring her happiness.
This scene is the conversation right after Kyouka attempted to slash and kill a police officer in order to escape when being questioned by him on the street. Kyouka, who was told by Kouyou, Fitzgerald, and even Atsushi, that she has “too much talent in killing”, becomes so desperate that she has lost even the will to run and ends up being arrested.
If the one standing between you and your wishes is someone else, you can still resist. But when you yourself is the enemy, there is nothing you can do but shed tears.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa
I put Ryuro Hirotsu, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and Ogai Mori in top places because of their age and wealth. They will talk about starting a family soon, maybe trying to be so obvious, like they would see a child no I’m not considering Elise here and have a baby fever, however if you show any kind of discomfort by it they are going stop and have a serious talk about it.
Doppo Kunikida and Sakunosuke Odasaku would totally want some children, in the future or sooner. They would totally wait for you to be ready for starting a family, asking multiple times and having frequently serious talk. While with Oda I can see him being more like “if it happens it happens”, Doppo would have any planned before hand.
Akiko Yosano and Kouyou Ozaki or mommys are going to be very happy to start a family! Maybe they will try a little to convince you to start one, but if you say that you aren’t ready or a simple “no” they will accept it without problems. I think Kyouko is going to be a little more pushy than Yosano thought.
Ranpo Edogawa and Osamu Dazai they are… Uhm… Not really that much interested. For now. It’s not something they ever thought about, like if you brought it up they are going to be surprised. I put them higher only because if you talk about it multiple times or got pregnant, they would probably take their responsibilities and start a family. They only need time.
Motojiro Kaiji and Ango Sagakuchi are very similar to Ranpo and Dazai actually. Neither of them really thought about having a family, but I don’t think they are against the idea of starting one. They simply need time since works come first, and it’s better to have a more normal life style for a child looking at you kaiji.
Chuuya Nakahara and Ichiyou Higuchi would be actually kind of scared and confused to start a family. They are both wealthy enough to take care of children, but they also know that it doesn’t come from a good place, especially for children. I put Higuchi lower simply cause she wonders if she is going to be a good mom, while Chuuya is going to get pretty used to the idea sooner.
Junichirou Tanizaki, Atsushi Nakajima, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa are the ones who only start thinking about family after a long while. I don’t think that the three of them would be ready to have such responsibilities on their shoulder, since they are very young, but I’ll say that Atsushi and Akutagawa are going to be the ones most against starting a family even if older while Junichirou will maybe open up to the idea.

I recently came across a translation of the second official BSD guidebook, where it says that Mori's "type" is girls under 12. I myself am of the belief that Mori is not a pedo, I've read and seen plenty of evidence that says otherwise, however i dont know how to feel about this "favourite type" thing in the guidebook. Do you think its a mistranslation or something? Or by "favourite type" its not necessarily talking about romantic/sexual partner and more just people they get on with?
Favourite type doesn't actually speak about romantic or sexual things. For example, my favourite type of food is rice
I think it's a bad translation and it happens with the manga in episode 37 in his conversation with Ozaki Kouyou that the anime did a horrible disaster
English: The girls I protect are aged 12 and younger
Spanish: I'm happy to hear that but I'm only interested in the ones under 20
German: Glad to hear, but I'm not attracted to older women
Italian: I'm happy, but you are a little old for me
But the original, the Japanese one can be translated to: I'm happy but you know, my [defense] range is of 12 years old and below
Range of what? It can be anything! And that's a characteristic of Mori, he leaves everything in interpretation like the real life author who curiosly got more along with children and his kids rather than adults around him because of his polemics and thoughts (like thinking women can have opinions)
People think really bad things of that asexual, that because of his age I don't think he understands he's asexual. Similar to Alastor, same case

Trans Chuuya thoughts I posted on twitter. It got super long so I’m posting it under the cut…
Chuuya realizes he feels “wrong”after post explosion birth and after being socialized by the Sheep…he brushes it off as proof of not being human…as he learns more about society he decides to present himself as a boy because his enemies take him seriously that way (in my head the Sheep were orphans from Suribachi and runaways so there’s probably a pretty big queer community there)…totally ignoring the fact that being called a boy makes him happier.
Basically his logic up until he joins the mafia is “I’m probably a boy, but I have bigger problems” and his dysphoria over being human is stronger than anything really…but I think when he meets the flags (and Kouyou I have a whole section for her), he starts to think more he starts to think more about presentation vs identity (ie learns that women don’t have to dress as men to be taken seriously, gnc Lippmann, insert other flags hcs I have)…Chuuya realizes he is trans…Doc offers to get him HRT and surgery but Chuuya’s really in his “I don’t trust anyone in the Mafia” phase and doesn’t want to really stake his transition on an unstable source/ hates depending on people…so he’s fine with rocking with the masc leaning androgyny…his dysphoria lessens a bit because he now realizes his gender confusion isn’t what makes him not human…
BUT THEN BAM STORMBRINGER JUMPSCARE (the only way to really think about sb actually)… Verlaine is also trans *insert the singularity metaphor thread here* and Chuuya literally watches his past self die in his arms (trauma and trans metaphor two in one combo)…although Chuuya is king of repression…he probably channels all his sb trauma into a complete gender crisis…cuts his hair and starts binding with transtape…wants to start HRT but is still uneasy about doctors and all. But after weaponizing Corruption as Soukoku…he starts getting really bad dysphoria/dysmorphia about his sense of humanity again…which translate over to gender dysphoria and he goes through a bad mental state for a bit, so he ultimately decides staring HRT will be best.
(Kouyou is transfem in my head and she sits him down and is like “you’re clearly suffering right now and we can help you” and they decide to send him abroad to a hormone specialist because he’s a labrat kid lol)
Yes my explanation for why Chuuya is not in dark era is transgenderism…Dazai defects…he gets promoted to Executive…finds out he’s definitely human and starts HRT…gets more confident in his gender identity and starts presenting more gnc again…it was mostly about control for him and having stability in his place in the mafia helped him feel more confident. A lot of his confidence is a mask (autistic chuuya), but he is secure. TransChuuya is so real to me!!!
Bonus Thoughts:
Soukoku was definitely making out/hooking up post SB, but Dazai respecting Chuuya’s boundaries increased their mutual trust and made them such a strong duo…knowing each other inside and out and also respecting (they were never safe enough to say love yet) each other…
Dazai is deffo gender apathetic nonbinary…he also probably has more of a humanity dysphoria there…their gender crisis starts during the 2 year isolation…to quote my partner who hasn’t watched bsd, “dazai to me is those pretransition trans women who look so miserable (dark era) and then when she transitions you can see the light in her eyes and a spring in her step”
Chuuya has not gotten top surgery because of medicinal trauma and also because I said so…
TRANS PEOPLE DO DON’T TRANSITION OR PRESENT OUTWARDLY IN A WAY DEEMED “SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE” ARE SO VALID!!!
Anyway please take this stupid skit of bungo stray woke:
*soukoku arguing during reunion*
Chuuya: you weren’t there for me!!
Dazai: of course not, I left the mafia!!
Chuuya: no I was talking about me starting HRT…
Dazai: oh…WELL YOU WEREN’T THERE WHEN I REALIZED IM NONBINARY
Chuuya: oh congrats
Dazai: yea I use any pronouns now
Chuuya: coolio
Dazai: you look better…more chuuya now…
Chuuya: thanks
*awkard pause*
Chuuya: okay im going back to kicking your ass
Dazai: yea fair enough

People thinking Dazai looks down on or doesn’t think Chuuya’s smart or interesting. People who think Mori is a mustache-twirling supervillain out to ruin Dazai’s life or something. Like seriously, people thinking Mori would abuse his two favorite blorbos just don’t understand the character. For one, that’s just not the kind of character he is! It’s not in his character, and it would be incredibly stupid of him to do that and he would know that! And I think it’s been shown pretty clearly through his interactions with Dazai and Chuuya that that’s not the case?? And fics where teenage SKK are scared of or wary of him and constantly on edge around him out of fear… none of that is canon at all. Young Chuuya was respectful but not unquestionably subservient, and Mori doesn’t expect him to be! Mori likes that they were rude teenagers, he found them hilarious! And now adult Chuuya has nice conversations with Mori and Kouyou over tea and indulges Mori’s weirdness. If we’re counting the mobile game as canon, then iirc at one point Chuuya goes to the aquarium with Mori and Elise, to protect them, but Mori is encouraging him to lay off a bit and have fun! Fics where Mori overworks Chuuya or coldly disregards his health upset me because that’s not it! If Chuuya is overworked, it’s because he’s a workaholic and won’t listen to Mori telling him to take a break! Mori gives his higher up subordinates a large amount of freedom as long as they get their jobs done, he doesn’t even really try to get Kouyou to come back during the Kyouka stuff, and he lets Akutagawa do whatever as long as he gets results. He’s not a saint but he’s not the devil, that’s his whole thing, and protecting Yokohama and the mafia itself is his whole purpose.
Wow this segued into a whole lot about Mori. My other thing is people who think Kunikida is the voice of reason or the stick in the mud rule follower. He is not. He is just as insane as the rest of them! Oh, and “ukeified” Chuuya, for lack of a better term. I will not go into detail on that because it enrages me but it is always so obvious and disconcerting to see
come off anon can we be friends
i truly think that a lot of people just villainize mori because the translations got a bit screwed up in terms of him + elise's interactions and because he's the easiest scapegoat. they ignore that he's easily one of the most important parts of the tripartite agreement that keeps yokohama and all your fave blorbos safe, or at least safe when it's being upheld. i don't think he's a saint, but he isn't the demon that everyone makes him out to be.
also. the point on kunikida. yes. kunikida is the voice of reason in the way that. where's that meme that's like "it's odd to think that the average person doesn't know this much about x topic." "oh, yes. but surely they know about [ insert thing about x that the average person certainly doesn't know ]" "yes, of course they would." he broke into the meteorological bureau because the weather was wrong, canonically. he's so self-sacrificial it's insane. people tend to reduce him to a "rule follower" and he is to the extent that he follows his own laws and morals. one of his dislikes in his canon character profile is "authority".

Finally understanding Beast Mori (as Asagiri intended)
Tumblr media
Hello everyone, I am hoping you’ll be nice about me talking about Mori for two seconds and express my thoughts about such a guy like this. This isn’t going to be some fancy analysis picking apart stuff like I’d usually want to or even me addressing every trait he has because I definitely don’t go into everything. This is me finally being at peace with Mori’s humanity.
Before you say anything, I’d just like to share my own peace of comprehension. So if you were similarly confused the way I was, I think you’d appreciate this (Or if you’re looking for a different approach on Mori).
Im sure most of you have read the manga adaptation, so just to let you know, I am going to be using passages from the official Light Novel translation and if anyone needs it, I can send it to them!
For anyone who’s decided to read, hello! Nice to meet you. I’m sure we’ve all shared the same confusion when confronted with Beast Mori’s difference in personality and approach. Thoughts like “Why is he so much nicer?” Or “Why does he care much more about how kids are treated, when he himself has treated kids the same way he describes in the past?”
How could this person be the same guy who was Mori the Port Mafia Boss? The war veteran who used Yosano the way he did? So we came up with many idea of why he’s different to justify it, but here’s the thing: Mori is the same person he always was, this is a universe where everything is the same, but different where Dazai chooses to intervene.
After a few days, I was able to recognize it but I couldn’t hold myself to acknowledge it. It’s hard to see a man who represents the dark, the Port Mafia, to the Armed Detective Agency’s light. I couldn’t wrap my head that such a controlling, manipulative man could have humanity like the rest of the characters.
Why was this so hard for me to see? Well two reasons— the fandom and how the anime cuts down Mori’s emotions when adapting canon material. This happens to Dazai too, but people are much more willing to talk about it compared to Mori. Now the fandom really does love blaming everything on Mori and that’s not the most constructive thing to do when talking about abuse narratives. I can’t blame anyone for taking this route when it came to Mori because of Asagiri’s poorly thought out choice with him…. we all know what I’m talking about. Elise.
However, I need some of you to understand that abuse narratives are never as simple as “oh, it’s all this persons fault because they’re a horrible person, so [character] is resolved from any guilt or responsibility”. This not only dumbs down the situation and seriousness of it, by mischaracterizing the abuser, you’re also mischaracterizing the victim as well and what they’ve gone through. You’re putting their story in jeopardy.
Bungou Stray Dogs is a story about human beings, morality, and what it all means. Mori, and in turn Fukuzawa, are important to understand Bungou Stray Dogs because they are in two pinochle positions that start this discussion of Morality. I am baffled that a story like this, one that approaches these topics with so much appreciation for humanity and nuance, has a fandom that doesn’t want to talk about what it has to offer.
Asagiri’s poorly thought out writing decision of a joke is going to have lasting effects with how Mori is going to be approached forever and I see this, but I think the little girl jokes are the least important thing to talk about because they have as much impact as the Tanizaki siblings do. He’s also written to be not a good person either, so you can dislike him easily, but how many of these characters are traditionally good people? Kouyou, for example, is not a “good person” and emotionally abusive in example to how she treated Kyouka. That doesn’t stop people from liking her friendship with Chuuya and making content with her.
So this attitude toward Mori had me lost when it came to him because I could see how much thought Asagiri puts into writing him the same way he does with so many, but I’ve seen so many disregard his humanity that I had no way to express any of my thoughts to sort out what to think about through anyone else when faced with Beast Mori. Everyone was as lost I was, and the people that weren’t never explained it in a way I could break that barrier.
So what finally made me wrap my head around Mori? It was exactly one conversation I had with a friend and it wasn’t even about Beast Mori in particular, it was just about Mori and his poor humanity while navigating how to lead. Everything just clicked with that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Dazai, Chuuya, age Fifteen)
This right here is where Mori tells us what he thinks his position means after the struggling we visibly see him go through. Is it an inherently correct conclusion to make? No, but does it make sense as someone who’s a leader of a huge, dangerous underground criminal organization? Yes, it does.
We have no backstory on Mori, but his poor humanity is easy to explain when he’s been in positions that require him to disregard his own and everyone else’s humanity for years now. As someone who’s seen war up close and a physician, these jobs require him to take control of the other person. Well in his mind at least, he sees these jobs and chooses to the route that’s most efficient.
It’s never positioned to be for himself though, he doesn’t take glee in what he does for self serving purposes, it’s always for the country, the city, the organization. His thought process is never the power hungry yearning we see everyone mistake it for. It’s never that he wants it, it’s that he needs it for everything to go well.
That’s exactly how he treats Yosano because even though it’s creepy to base your abilities looks on a little girl, that doesn’t stop him from seeing her use before her age and humanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His clinical utilitarianism is his core trait but also most disliked one from what I can tell in the fandom, and people tend to misinterpret it to make the more non-favorable view of him. But again, he’s not supposed to be the greatest guy ever and you can understand where these traits started forming. And again, to paraphrase another’s words: he’s cunning, but not power hungry.
He’s also not disliked by his subordinates and actually respected, he respectively enjoys the company, but there’s a mixed answer to that and that it is… nobody is going to listen to you if you don’t treat them with decency. Why would you expect a tool to work if you break them? One of his earliest lessons he learned with Yosano and leadership.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen)
For example, we all know this scene is manipulation. He’s baiting Chuuya with information while still treating the teenager with respect and enough honesty to form a bond. Chuuya is perfectly aware that he’s being used in the present and in the past, but he respects Mori as a leader objectively after his own considered failure and lack of control over the sheep, even if he didn’t consider himself one. I don’t think this honesty comes from nowhere because that quote, “only a Diamond can polish a Diamond”, came from Natsume in reference to himself and Fukuzawa.
He sees himself and Fukuzawa in Soukoku fondly, but I tend to rethink this quote time to time because at first it comes off as a quote about partnership and building off of each other’s good qualities to perfect their own, but the way Mori uses it here feels as though it’s positioned to mean that one of them comes out perfected and the other weared down. Pretty competitive if you think about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Bungou Stray Dogs BEAST)
We’re finally at the part you’ve been waiting for guys! So what was my point for analyzing canonverse Mori? So as I said before, these are the exact same guy and all that word jumble? That was an extended version of what was communicated with me to finally get what was going on with Mori in this universe and why he’s suddenly in an orphanage.
Now I couldn’t tell what was going through Beast Dazai’s mind and where this decision came from instead of actually killing him like the rumor’s implied, but I can come close. I think that Beast Dazai recognized this potential of change either from the multitude of universes he was able to witness or recognized it in his own considering canonverse Dazai never does anything against Mori (even if he visibly dislikes him).
Possibility is one thing, the why is another. It was either that he saw potential and good that could come out of this in the long run, Mori’s intelligence and expertise still proves usefulness, less dangerous for Oda in the long run if he let Mori stay there instead of the Mafia, or all three.
I can say for sure though that this is better for Mori because after the years of being in atmospheres that require so much of him intelligently and exempt of any emotion involved for the sake of efficiency, being able to rekindle his humanity where nothing is expected of him except to raise kids in a non-exploitative context sounds really freeing to me. Considering he’s been there for 4 years, I find the development understandable.
Okay I’m hearing what you guys are saying again, “What about him saying he wanted to save Dazai? That doesn’t seem like typical Mori.” And I’m gonna say something really controversial: Well maybe he did.
Really though, I think he did care about Dazai and not because he saw a child struggling (think about Yosano and Q for 3 seconds), but because he saw himself in Dazai, which ultimately changed way more about their relationship than you guys think. There’s a lot of comparisons to Yosano and I understand where they come from because I think there’s a lot you can see similarities in, but Dazai is not purely a tool for Mori the way she was.
The avoidance of letting him die do come from his use and overall importance to the original plan of becoming the new boss, but I don’t think he would’ve left Dazai alone like that for 4 whole years after leaving the mafia if he didn’t care in some way way. What strikes me the most is how Asagiri decided to add “the man who raised Dazai”.
For Beast Mori, I think he’s had enough time to actually feel guilt and regret for Dazai as a person like a normal human being does. Oh I guess Elise is important too. Her aging up just meant that Mori has become less controlling and not like the little girl who he literally sees as a tool since kids are easier to manipulate. Can’t bring that energy to an orphanage, nope!
There’s better stuff out there about Mori that I think if you’re more open to thinking about Mori after this, you should check it out, these are just my thoughts recently. To end this off, here are two links to Asagiri’s own thoughts on Mori.

hella has officially joined the tsp book club! part 2 of our reactions pending lmao those were some very intense hours
if this was an irl socratic circle i would pay to be a fly on the wall. I FUCKED UP BY ADDING TWO MARGARETS THATS MY BAD. they'll be distinguished in upcoming dialogue. Brown goes by 'Maggie' n_n. Precinct 1 breakroom has seen some things. Also, yes! The DA prosecutes for the state! In a civil dispute, it's person to person going before a judge. But in criminal cases, the government is trying to put you away, not receive money/fair compensation for damages, so the DA does that work.
Your flabbers will be gasted 😭 might need to start using that.
BEAST tag is there for a reason! I only tagged it 'beast skk' so that people wouldn't expect the same dynamics or roles for the other characters ( like akutagawa sibling dynamic ), but of course, if skk is beast-au inspired it would naturally affect a few of the characters closest to them as well. Also, Skk is slowly but surely devolving into the aesthetic of their BEAST counterparts. Dazai hasn't been written in that brown coat for a good while now. The white suit at the New Year's party was also a deliberate choice.
never seen or read All my Sons all the way through, but i've encounted this quote in the wild:
“...he'll come back. We all come back, Kate. These private little revolutions always die. The compromise is always made. In a peculiar way. Frank is right-- every man does have a star. The star of one's honesty. And you spend your life groping for it, but once it's out it never lights again. I don't think he went very far. He probably just wanted to be alone to watch his star go out.”
---and i absolutely loved it and have been influenced by it.
i would be sat for that essay honestly.
. . . yes. it's the same diner. implied only, but i do have art in the drafts of skk on a case-date of milkshakes and files with skk in the same seats to parallel it.
Kouyou's assimilation!!!!! I can't believe Rori noticed that!! yes, she's almost always mentioned in a kimono, tying an obi, or wearing her haori, and even needed Chuuya to translate for her during their first years together. but she's changing. super excited to introduce the Kouyou of the present ( yes, she's alive ).
Agatha Christie was. self indulgent.
Yep! Jouno! 😭 The hunting dogs have been in my notes-app plot web since the very beginning when I decided to write tachihara into this. Since I'm translating the insane post-war politics of canon BSD into this au, they were naturally going to find themselves written into it.
TV girl .. . save me TV girl.... taking what's not yours is tsp skk i will be adding this to my on-loop writing roster.
THE JOUNO/DAZAI DIALOGUE HELLA 😭 I ACTUALLY CHOKED.
Unlike canon, TSP fyodor would, in fact die if you shot him. Not that I'm planning on writing that . . .
Jouno and Chuuya was lovely to write. They will be interacting again, unfortunately, so expect some introductions to the other members of the hunting dogs as well.
Dazai in the spotlight for once! Now he knows what it's like to be under the stagelight with Chuuya in the audience.
Kousano! Yeah that ship is preparing to set sail. Whether it's still afloat is the question. A question that hasn't been answered by Miss Medical Examiner's presence in the 1978 timeline. Yet.

Fun BSD French translation details and choices - Episode 6 (by someone who does not understand Japanese but thinks the differences with the English translation/subtitles are fun)
General notes:
Rokuzou's title is just "internet specialist". Instead of "Cyber Network Warrior".
Tumblr media
(side note: in French we use the ^ accent on vowels when it's a long one, instead of doubling them -> û = uu, ô = ou. In French, ou would actually make a oo or u sound, so yes I keep accidentally reading Kouyou's name "Kooyoo")
Kunikida's ability is called "Le Chant unique" (the single/lone song(singing)). It's a somewhat literal translation of "doppo" (for the single/lone part), but I can't speak on the poet vs song part.
Today's quotes:
Tumblr media
VF: Ce genre de monture ne vont bien que sur les visages majestueux comme le mien. (This kind of frame only fit majestic faces like mine.) Eng: Only a naturally flamboyant person like me could pull off wearing them.
Kunikida: Bonjour tout le monde- (Good morning everyone-) Atsushi: MONSIEUR KUNIKIDA AIDEZ-MOOIII!! (MISTER KUNIKIDA HELP MEEE!!) Kunikida: ... Tu sais que la journée commence à peine? (... You know the day just started?) Atsushi: C-c'est au sujet de Monsieur Dazai! Regardez-le! (I-it's about mister Dazai! Look at him!) Dazai: EEEAAAAAAAHH
