The Saint: The Desperate Diplomat (6.4, ITC, 1968)
"What happened to him?"
"Well, it's nothing to do with us, old boy. He was unconscious when we got here. He's lost a lot of blood. Got two bad wounds, making off with the money."
"He ought to have medical treatment."
"He'll come round. Then he'll tell us where the money is. After that, I don't much care if he lives or dies."
#the saint#the desperate diplomat#1968#leslie charteris#terry nation#ray austin#roger moore#suzan farmer#robert hardy#ivor dean#john robinson#david cargill#kenneth gardnier#pamela conway#leslie crawford#terence plummer#maggie london#yutte stensgaard#charlotte selwyn#brian harrison#I'm still not sold on the new theme tune.. it has a vocal aspect that im not convinced really works. hum. this is a notable ep as it is i#think the first directing credit of Ray Austin; formerly a stuntman and fight arranger for hire‚ he'd been doing odd jobs on the series#almost back to the beginning‚ and had been allowed to do some 2nd unit directing on other ITC shows‚ but The Saint was kind of the companys#show horse at this point and to get a proper directing job on it was a clear vote of confidence. perhaps it's then unsurprising that the ep#is an action bonanza‚ full of intricately choreographed fight scenes and multiple speaking roles for stunt performers like Crawford and#Plummer (presumably Austin was doing a favour for old pals‚ knowing a speaking role got you a higher wage). Hardy is the villain of the#week and as always he's enormous fun as a public school type scoundrel ready to kill anyone to get his hands on a hefty cash prize#the plot concerns an African state's relief funds being stolen to prevent them falling into corrupt hands‚ a plot quite similar to one Man#in a Suitcase had played with‚ and more generally (newly independent African nations reckoning with corruption) a subject that seems to#have fascinated Terry Nation; multiple of his Saint episodes brush on the theme‚ some sensitively some.. less so. this is middle ground

EDITOR:  Church and friends can challenge us for new year changes.  I knew a lady who lived by the word “Joy” for a whole year.  She had pictures, plaques, and scriptures around her home that included the word “Joy.”  A sweet message at church yesterday challenged me to pick a word to help me through life’s changes, challenges, and the insane ways of this world.  “Trust” is the word.    Proverbs 3:5 ( KJV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”  LMartin
Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is a federal holiday recognized the third Monday in January. Born January 15, 1929, the 2024 observance falls on what would have been his 95th birthday.  King is remembered for his nonviolent activism for civil rights.  His most famous speech was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial, August 28th,1963 in hopes to end racism:  “I have a dream...that we hold these truths to be self-evident that  all men are created equal…”

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell                Harvard and Plagiarism I am not one to brag, but did you know that I taught English at HARVARD for 18 years! (That's Harvard on the Highway-- or what we called Greenville Technical College, situated on HWY 291!) Here is the LEAST that a student needs to know about NOT COMMITTING PLAGIARISM. 1) If you use another person's exact words, you need to put quotes around the words.  Then in parenthesis, list the name of your source referring your reader to your Works Cited page for complete information. 2) If you are paraphrasing the words of another person, then follow this example: Jesse Watters said that Claudia Gay's dismissal as Harvard's president was Not Racism; it WAS racism when Harvard hired her.      Happy  2024!!!! ASHTON RECALLS:  by Ashton Hester
SALEM SCHOOL NEWS, OCTOBER 23, 1963 - (The following items were in the "Salem School News" column in the October 23, 1963 Keowee Courier). . .The Salem Chapter of Future Farmers of America met and organized October 9 for the 1963-64 school term. Officers elected were: president, Lynn Smith; vice president, Leland Talley; secretary, Roddy Smith; treasurer, Jackie Rankin; sentinel, Walter Hines; reporter, Kenneth Porter, adviser, John J. Rankin. The Salem chapter consists of 34 members. . .Linda Barker of the fifth grade and Harry Strickland of the third grade were crowned queen and king of the Halloween Carnival Saturday night. . .Our first grade children are working toward 100 per cent participation in the polio immunization program to be held at Salem School on Sunday afternoon, October 27. Old people and young people, we ask you to come get your Sabin oral polio vaccine. There are 37 boys and girls in our grade and each of us has a normal body. We ask you to help us keep it that way--help stop polio. . .The sixth grade has completed the annual "Progressive Farmer" magazine subscription sale. Over $100 was collected, which is the most of any of the past three years. . .Leon Patterson of the sixth grade had the misfortune to get an arm broken on the playground, but he hasn't allowed this to keep him out of school a single day. Maybe all of us need some of Leon's perseverance. . .Barbara Burgess of the second grade broke her leg Tuesday while playing at recess. . .Accidents seem to plague us. One of our teachers has a broken arm. . .Report cards were given out Thursday, and one little boy in the second grade went home crying because he made a "C." His family finally managed to calm him down, and he said, "I guess I'll have to study harder."

THE ACQUITTAL
1919
Tumblr media
The Acquittal is a play in three acts by Rita Weiman. The original production was produced by George M. Cohan and Sam Harris, staged by Sam Forrest.
The cast featured William Harrigan, son of the late entertainer Ned Harrigan. Young Harrigan was recently returned from military service overseas.
Kenneth Winthrop is tried for the murder of his foster-father, Andrew Prentice. His foster-brother, Robert Armstrong is his accuser. Both love Madeline, who has chosen Winthrop. Armstrong alleges that Edith Craig, secretly engaged to the dead man, and Winthrop were in love, but it is not believed. Circumstantial evidence is introduced offering the time as given by a certain clock. Madeline discovers that what they took for a clock in a butcher's store window was a circular meat scale, the hand of which stays at twelve, the top of the scale, when not in use. This discovery clears her husband. A postal inspector produces a letter written on the night of the murder by Prentice, which had been stolen in a mail holdup and recovered. This letter solves the whole mystery and puts the guilt on the shoulders of Prentice, who then confesses and commits suicide. Madeline finally finds happiness with Armstrong, who has always loved her.
Tumblr media
The Acquittal premiered in Atlantic City NJ at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on June 30, 1919. It then traveled to Asbury Park and Long Branch.
Tumblr media
Instead of moving directly across the river to Broadway, the play decamped to Chicago beginning September 21st. This is likely to await the availability of Cohan and Harris’ flagship theatre on the Rialto. It stayed in the Windy City until December 27, 1919. It made a quick trip to Baltimore before Broadway.
Tumblr media
The Acquittal opened on Broadway at the Cohan and Harris Theatre (226 West 42nd Street) on January 5, 1920.
About the Venue: The Cohan and Harris was in 1914 as the Candler, and leased to George M. Cohan and Sam H. Harris until 1920, when they ended their partnership. Harris kept the theatre, renaming it for himself. In 1926, he sold it to the Shuberts, who lost it in a 1933 bankruptcy. It was a movie house from 1933 to 1978 and demolished in 1996. It became part of Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.
“Do any of you remember that jangly old song titled ‘Harrigan, That's Me'? If you do, you can testify that the gentleman of the piece was more than ordinarily boastful of his ability; that there was very little H A double R I G A N could not do. All of which is a prelude to our statement that ‘The Acquittal,’ Rita Weiman's new drama at the Cohan and Harris Theatre, is made by an unassuming young man of that name. William Harrigan's playing of the square, slangy, likable reporter of The Chronicle, Joe Conway, is one of the best bits of acting we have seen in some time.” ~ McELLIOTT, NY DAILY NEWS
The play closed on May 1, 1920, after 138 performances. After a short break, the play went out on tour again. Harrigan, and Chrystal Herne remained with the cast.
Tumblr media
During its post-Broadway tour, the play returned to Atlantic City and Nixon’s Apollo on October 4, 1920.
Tumblr media
In 1923, a film version was released by Universal. The film was directed by Clarence Brown starring Norman Kerry, Claire Windsor, Richard Travers, and Barbara Bedford.
Tumblr media
