(disclaimer: these are based off short wikipedia reads and my crumbling high school chemistry knowledge. correct me if I'm wrong about anything.)

HYDROGEN: Hydrogen is the lightest element (consisting of only one proton and one electron). It is also the most abundant element in the universe, it's a gas (at room temperature) and it can explode. It's also quite representative of acids, having the (Arrhenius) definition of an acid straight up saying that it has to dissociate in water to form H+ ions. It's also quite an efficient fuel. Hydrogen is anywhere and Hydrogen is everywhere. If you like explosions, sour beverages, or acid in general, consider voting Hydrogen!

LITHIUM: Lithium, under standard conditions, is by far the least dense metal and the least dense solid element! You may primarily know him from your phone's Lithium-ion batteries. There are Lithium-based drugs used to treat mental illnesses. You can throw a block of lithium in water and it will make a really big explosion. The metal is soft and silvery. I'm running out of things to say about him. If you like batteries vote Lithium? (edit: just realised lithium is used for batteries, and batteries are connected to robotics and engineering. if you like robots and cool mechanical stuff vote lithium!)

SODIUM: You must know him from table salt. That's actually NaCl, his best known involvement. There are many more very important and very commonplace compounds that involve sodium, such as baking soda (NaHCO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (that's probably the most famous base?). It's also very important to the human body (you shouldn't eat more than 2300mg a day). If you've ever used table salt or baking soda while cooking, consider voting Sodium!

POTASSIUM: Their name was based on the word potash, which was based on an early and easy way of obtaining potassium, from putting ash in a pot, adding water, heating, and evaporating the solution. It's used in a lot of fertilisers because it's an essential plant nutrient. It's also involved in a ton of important compounds: KOH (a strong base), KNO3 (often used as salt bridges in electrochemical cells), K2CrO7 (an oxidising agent often used in organic synthesis), and K2CrO4 (I don't know what this one does). If you have ever eaten food from fertilisers consider voting Potassium!

RUBIDIUM: Rubidium compounds are sometimes used in fireworks to give them a purple color. They've also got a cool name, based on the latin rubidius, for deep red (the color of its emission spectrum). I'll be real, I don't really know much about them beyond that, but that is one cool name. Vote for Rubidium if you like cool names.

CAESIUM: Caesium is used in the definition for a second, meaning that an entire SI unit is based on it! A second can be defined as "the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of microwave light absorbed or emitted by the hyperfine transition of caesium-133 atoms in their ground state undisturbed by external fields". It was also discovered from mineral water. Did you know that they had to use 44000 liters of water to find her? If you've ever experienced time or had a conception of it in terms of units, consider voting Caesium!!!

FRANCIUM!!!: Caesium... TWO! It's sad that no one will probably read this far but this is my favourite element in this poll. This element is characterised by instability. Her longest half-life is 22 minutes. Her entire existence was conjoint with Caesium before they discovered that she was her own element. She has never been seen. They literally never confirmed what color she is. She was born in a wet cardboard box all alone. Through the hands of different scientists, she was going to be named after Russia, Virginia, or Moldavia at different points in time. At one point the name catium was proposed (for "cation", since she was believed to be the most electropositive cation), but was rejected because it sounded like a cat element. Which is so fucking sad. We could've had cat element but we ended up with France element. That's right she's also named after France. Just tragic fascinating existence overall. Also isn't it just insane that her half-life is only 22 minutes? Dude, you don't get it, the most of her that's ever existed in one place is a mere 300000 atoms. She's here and she's gone. What the hell.

Flowers of sulfur (not flour, even if it looks more like it) are the result of sulfur in the Earth's crust getting shot out of volcanic vents in gas form and then solidifying on the ground (=deposition), resulting in a layer of pure sulfur covering the area.

Yuzuriha's scars are gone for this whole scene. She should have two swirls, one on her shoulder and one on her neck.

"Senku's Kitchen" is actually a parody of "MOCO's Kitchen", a popular cooking show hosted by actor, chef, TV presenter, entrepreneur, and model Mokomichi Hayami.

Everyone also looks very excited to be making explosives. Go team!

The ingredients Senku uses are correct, but you'll want to grind the 3 powders separately before combining them.

The charcoal acts as fuel, the saltpeter/potassium nitrate (KNO3) supplies the oxygen, and sulfur lowers the ignition point & increases the rate of combustion.

To make KNO3 from manure, mix it with ash, straw and urine. Stir periodically for several months, then filter the KNO3 crystals out using water and ashes.

In Senku's case, he may have collected it from the walls of the cave, where it can form naturally.

Senku adds extra sugar for "oomph", but sugar has a lower heat of combustion (=amount of heat released when burnt) than charcoal. When the goal is to have everything burn fast and strong, adding a "weaker" fuel seems pointless.

(You can replace charcoal w/sugar, but it's worse.)

Did you know the first operating system to use a spinning hourglass cursor was Windows 95? The default one is static, but you can change it in the menu.

Taiju's brain is running on an outdated OS that's older than him by several years! At least his hardware is good :)

(The wait cursor was changed to a spinning disk for Windows Vista in 2006, a few years after Taiju was born. I spent too long looking this stuff up but it's really interesting…)

Pyrites were the most popular strike-to-light method before flint and steel. Some knowledge was lost over time, as not all pyrites are effective at making sparks, but it's definitely possible.

If the grains/inclusions of pyrite in the rock are small, it's easier to spark.

The technique with these methods is generally to scrape hard rather than hit, as you want to shave off tiny pieces of metal which then spontaneously combust in the air, creating sparks.

In Taiju's case, he's probably hitting it with enough force to break small pieces off.

The plume of smoke is incredibly solid and straight, so I guess there's almost no wind? The part above the moutain peaks should be dissipated though because wind tends to be most consistently strong as it blows across the top of the mountain range.

Senku loves taking risks even though he has the worst luck. I sure hope nothing bad happens before he can meet the person who lit that fire…

Who says science isn't exciting?

A Roswell, New Mexico science breakdown, part 4.1.

I'm back with the final science meta for RNM. Similarly to the other three (1, 2, 3) metas I previously did, I will go through each episode and try to explain what is being said / what is going on. However, unlike last time, I will try to write the meta as the episode air, so there won't be any references to future episodes (and my sanity will be somewhat preserved).

This is then the science meta for episode 4x01 Steal my sunshine, so there will be spoilers under the cut.

The same disclaimer applies here again: I am not a native English speaker nor am I American. I may give definitions that everyone already knows, but I go on the principle that if I had to google it, maybe someone else won't know either.

I am also not a biologist or a chemist or a computer expert. I am simply very enthusiastic when it comes to cool science facts. (Please beware, I have a tendency to go crazy over maths).

Now, enough of me rambling, let's dive into science!

We start off the season with Liz talking about the Leidenfrost effect. The Leidenfrost effect is when a liquid, that is close to a surface significantly hotter than the liquid's boiling point, produces an insulating vapor that stops it from boiling rapidly. We can then notice that the drop of liquid will hover above the hot surface.

Liz then continues by doing an experiment in front of her GED class. (Note, since I'm not American I barely even know what a GED is, so I cannot tell you if the notion of Leidenfrost effect or the experiment that Liz is about to do is on the curriculum). She says "This is potassium nitrate. This is common sugar. Apart.... nada. But together...", before setting fire to it.

You can experiment with the Leidenfrost effect when cooking. Say you have a pan at roughly 190°C (which corresponds to the Leidenfrost point for water, and according to google this is 374°F) and you put some water on the pan. Since water boils at 100°C (=212°F), the surface of the pan is then sufficiently hot to observe the droplet of water hovering for a bit, and they will not evaporate as fast as if the pan had been cooler. (I may or may not sprinkle a bit of water on hot pans whenever I cook, ever since my physics teacher did this in class).

Potassium nitrate is a chemical component denoted by KNO3, that is composed from potassium ions K+ and nitrate ions NO3-, and is a source of nitrogen. Potassium nitrate can be commonly found in rockets propellants (hence why Liz is telling her students that) and fireworks.

When mixing potassium nitrate with sugar, one creates gas. More particularly, that gas creates an expansion in space, which can thrust a rocket in the air!

The next science bit happens at Deep Sky, where we see Kyle and Liz cure Maria's brain degeneration. I could research brain scans, and try explaining what is going on. But. We know that whatever it is, it's alien, and therefore I am prioritizing my sanity and moving on to the next subject.

We then see rocket sketches on the blackboard behind Liz. For the purpose of my eye sight (and also because I do not know how to enhance the quality of screenshots), I'm going to assume that the rockets are, well, not rocket science and therefore everything written is correct. (On a second note, I once did a summer camp where I build a mini rocket propellant, and my rocket launch was similar to what we saw in the ep. I encourage everyone to build a rocket once in their life, it's so much fun!)

Kyle tells Liz "I've got a new genomics software you might like to test drive."

Genomics is an interdisciplinary field of biology focusing on the structure, function, evolution, mapping, and editing of genomes.

A genome is an organism's complete set of DNA.

We then see Michael move-in with Alex, who says: "Everything here is yours, including [...] the sat link phone."

A genomics software is something that indeed exists, and therefore this isn't made up science (yet. Remember that they invented a new word to basically mean genome).

And then, Alex talks about weather balloons (both with Michael and at Deep Sky). Now, I need to warn you beforehand, but I used to be obsessed with weather forecast as a kid, and I'm considering doing meteorology studies after my bachelor. So when I first heard Alex talk about weather balloons, I got excited, but I didn't think much of it. But then. He said: "Heat is up 1.3 degrees an hour for the last three over Roswell at large. Even though barometric pressure and wind direction dictates it should be falling. Not to mention that the ground conditions don't match up, that humidity is up 23% in the troposphere."

A satellite phone is a phone that connects to the telephone network via satellites, instead of terrestrial cell sites (which cellphones use). Satellite phones have the particularity to be able to connect even in the most remote parts of the world (where there wouldn't be any cell service), and are also used for their privacy and security (much harder to hack into).

I will break down what he says: barometric pressure (also known as atmospheric pressure) is the pressure within the Earth's atmosphere. The atmospheric pressure at mean sea-level is given to be 1 atm (standard atmosphere), where 1 atm = 101,325 Pa (Pascals).

The higher we go, the less atmospheric pressure we found. That is explained since atmosphere is more or less the weight of air above a measurement point, and therefore the higher we go, the less air there is above us.

Note also that the barometric pressure is affected by the atmospheric density, which depends on the air's temperature and moisture (as well as the height of measurement as seen above). We then have that a low barometric pressure (when converted to mean sea level) would lead to cooler temperature and higher air humidity, whereas a higher pressure would lead to good weather.

In what Alex says here, we notice that the temperature is going up (by 1.3° (I would assume Fahrenheit since it's America. But it could also perhaps be Kelvin) every hour), but that the barometer indicates that the pressure is falling, and hence the temperature should decrease. Obviously, this is not really possible, as barometric pressure is used in actual weather predictions. So clearly, Aliens science (which makes sense, since, you know, he's working for Deep Sky).

Next, Alex mentions that humidity is up 23% in the troposphere. The troposphere is the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere, and is where most of the weather occurs. We also know that humidity and temperature are related, but that the relation depends on the climate we are in (in a tropical climate, higher temperature could also go with higher humidity, which is not the case for desert climate for instance).

Also note that wind carries moisture, so when Alex talks about wind direction, I assume he means that the wind is coming from a colder and more humid place, and is bringing it all to Roswell, further contradicting the raise in temperature.

Once again, I don't know much about Roswell, namely the climate it has, both with regards to the show, and in real life. However, judging by the fact that Alex says that humidity goes up and he expects the temperature to go down (since he says it contradicts with the 1.3 degrees extra per hour), I am tempted to conclude that Roswell (at least show!Roswell) has a temperate continental climate.

(Please note, I am in no way an expert on the matter yet, I simply had a meteorology phase as a kid)

Kyle then says to Ramos "Is that why you had me studying locusts that had shifted their migration course?"

We have more about weather further in the episode. Dallas says to Maria: "I feel a shift in atmospheric pressure", just before it starts to rain. If we go off the assumption that Dallas was indeed talking about the purple rain (which, last I checked, was purely alien), then it simply follows to what I said earlier: lower barometric pressure gives bad weather.

Now, this may be purely because I am not a native English speaker, but I genuinely didn't know what a locust was before today. Locusts are a species of grasshoppers. The main difference between grasshoppers and locusts is that locusts can change their behaviour and their morphology (colour and shape) in response to the air density (i.e. sudden change in weather). Locusts also tend to form swarms under meteorological change.

The part on migration is actually rather interesting. I first found an article claiming that locusts migrate towards heavy rain and towards high grounds. Then, a decade later another article was written calling the first article bullshit and breaking down each point and how it was wrong. (Call-out articles are hilarious imo)

Finally, the World Meteorological Organisation said in an article that locusts migrate moslty following wind patterns, and in particular each type of locust will migrate following a certain type of wind (generally either following warm or cold winds).

This then means, that if the locusts in Roswell have changed their migrating pattern, that there has been an unexpected change in wind type. However, the locusts don't migrate every time the wind changes, but only when the change is significant enough. Such a change would usually (in our world at least) indicate the coming of a storm. A big storm. Bigger than usual. Like a storm with meteorites and purple rain.

(Unless Roswell in RNM doesn't follow the same laws of meteorology as we do. Also a possibility to take into account)

Please also note that I have very deliberately ignored what the Dark Triad doing is doing with the oil thing, as I am not quite sure what is going on, and I don't want to theorize something that will be completely annihilated in two eps.

Note that the weather affecting the locusts migration pattern is confirmed by Ramos.

Harlow, Vanity, Pita, Draken, Grayson, Harmonie, Nixx, Remi, Trinity, Jona, and Lala.

ʜᴀʀʟღᴡ ᴍᴀʀꜱʜᴍᴇʟʟღ ᴘᴀʏɴᴇ (Vanity Kimono) Harlow came walking in with a confidence that radiates out to everyone around. She was focused and deliberate..she was a walking genius in the treatsies of 14th and 15th century, she was after all the most human of those in the room. Magic may be inherited but her parents were not mages, supernaturals yes… but not mages. At first they had thought the triplets were benign until at first Grayson had called up a legion of dead from a nearby graveyard during their second birthday.. Then it was time to bring someone in and test the children. Harlow was the last of the group to really come into her powers or so they thought but the reality is she just naturally had the ability to control hers from a young age and chose not to show others. She held in her hands a cloche and several bottles of herbs and one of a white powdered substance that had KNO3 on the bottle, AKA Potassium Nitrate, AKA Saltpetre. Balanced on top of the glass dome and held firmly under her chin were 2 very very old alchemical books.. She greeted everyone with a tight lipped smile, her blonde pony tails bouncing with each step she came to the still and placed everything on the ground, she knelt and began piecing everything together, a copper pipe here, a coil there, and then pushing the pieces into the cloche as it needed to be set, she carefully took up a vial that had the beautiful silver fluidic chemical with HG 80 written on a label in her handwriting.. She twisted the cap and with the glass dome open.. She poured the substance inside. She laid the books on the large altar that everyone was ready and standing on and opened them to pages she had previously marked and was running her manicured nail along the page.. Slowly letting her eyes run down the page.

She had the information and she looked to Jona “ This process usually takes days if not weeks but we are in a hurry… so I am going to need you to do that thing Trinity has told me you can do.. “ She actually snickered a little but tried to keep a straight face as she whispered in her mind.. No… not that thing.. But never said it aloud.. Instead she continued. “We will need to speed time up for Mercury to dry, I will keep it going on a low fire but you will have to find away to speed it.. On the third day when it has begun to dry, I need to have you halt time there, let me ring that to a powder and then another day.. Another grind and then one more day.. Another grind.. Then we will mix in the PN and herbs and again you will have to age that by at least 3 days.. For the crystals to form. She glanced around to the group, “I need you to focus on the Great God of Mercury, we wish that he blesses us with his speed and a favorable outcome. We will all need to lend our energies to Jona, this has to succeed. “ with that she slowly rose from her knees with a limbered grace that a human should never have. “Are we ready?” Her eyes moved from face to face… Pita..Trinity..Jona..Lala..Remi..Harmonie..Nyxx.. and even Draken and Grayson in the back.. Out of sight keeping physical watch from other preternaturals who may try to hunt them while such magic is being called into form.

нᴀʀᴍᴏɴιᴇ ꜱтᴀʀʟιɴɢ (Harmonie Starling) Sauntered in behind Vanity still feeling refreshed from their swim , she had found lilies along their way to the lab and had picked them , she found a vase and placed the freshly picked lilies into the vase and conjured some water to keep them fresh for this process, it was funny that it had been lilies as they are associated with the god Mercury. she placed it next to the stihl, in the middle of the circle. As she heard Harlow explain the process her eyebrows raised. This was one complicated process. She knew the group would have to focus and keep their focus. She went to the cabinets and tables looking for something to help them with focus. She found what she was looking for, dried jasmine and sage. She took the two together and bound them tightly with twine and would bring forth a small bowl to place it on as it would be burning - safety first afterall- she nodded a hello to Harlow and placed the bowl with the focus herbs next to her on the table. She then made her way to a rune on the circle. She then nodded to Nyxx her fingers to her lips then to her third eye, nodding her head to each of the friends and coven members present. She felt safe in this space with the people both in the circle and those standing back in protective mode. - Γєmi - ΓέigηHaΓϮ - (RemiRedd): Remi waited for the prompt from Harlow. He shut his eyes briefly and stood still for a moment. He knew that this attempt was full of risks. But he didn't bring up his concerns. Instead, he made contact with everyone on the altar, each in turn. This was a united front of course. His standing on the particular divination circle was not a mistake. He wanted to make sure everyone present would not be seen as malevolent to the spirits that would be trafficking themselves. While Jonah would push at time and manipulate the passage of it, there would be certain pitfalls and vulnerabilities. Messing with time was always a risk…. Especially when you had so many involved at once. To safeguard that, he began a meditation of peace and calm. Their bodies were protected and safeguarded from without by Draken and Grayson in the interim. But from within the circles, Remi would draw in the protection of ethereal benevolent gods and spirits. Lalani provided a song in her native Elvish tongue and hummed it softly…. It was barely audible. It was designed to lull everyone into an undisturbed, elongated trance- Days would be passing in moments if Jona could manage it. They would be in that trance easier and because of how she hummed her tune. It was psalm-like. нᴀʀᴍᴏɴιᴇ ꜱтᴀʀʟιɴɢ (Harmonie Starling): Nyxx acknowledged the hellos from Harlow , Harmonie, and the others she was always cautious. She stood back from the circle but was there out of support of being helpful to the new town they were calling home. She went around silently blessing the space, sewing intentions for good fortune and success. She had been told of the importance of this process and knew it had the potential to be disastrous if not done right. She had faith in her coven though. Once she was done blessing the space she too walked to a marked rune stone and stood to add to the strength of the circle spelling this alchemical recipe to do its will

And really was in contrast to the power she held… she had been a high priestess since she was 15, but within the Coven of Oak and Ashes she was Vanity’s 2nd, only because Van had more pull politically being that she was a Fae. there were things that Van looked to Harlow for, and alchemical magic was one. With this all happening Jona began his difficult task..
