Happy Halloween, everyone! To mark the occasion, I thought I’d share something I’ve been working on. You may be aware that years ago, I made a page where I translated the Japanese lyrics for POTO. (Link is below.) I’ve been meaning to update it with some corrections and fixes, and may move it to Tumblr because of some issues I’ve had with Weebly since making the page.
But recently, I learned that in the time since the show reopened in Japan after the pandemic, those in charge have made some changes to the lyrics and other aspects of the show to bring Japan’s production more in line with those in London and the US. I got an audio bootleg from Masked Lion and spent some time over the last couple of weeks listening to it and noting the changes I could identify.
Recording from January 17, 2021; Tokyo, Japan
Cast: Yuta Iwaki, Sae Yamamoto, Susumu Kato, Aya Kawamura, Koichi Taira, Morito Masuda, Kimura Chiaki, Atsuto Yamada, Mariko Gosho
(info from Glass Prism)
My notes (far too many for your taste?)
- Auctioneer sounds more dramatic than in other performances
- Added a “Saa!” (“Now!” or “Here!”) at the end of the Prologue
- Overture is using the new track
- Reyer still insists on “Romu” (which doesn’t mean anything) over “Roma” (which is correct)
- Counterpoint in the “Hannibal” chorus when they start singing again after the ballet/instrumental seems to be missing
- Key change in ToM is now D-F like in all other productions; Japan had kept it as D-Eb (like the OLC album and early West End performances) for their whole run before Covid
- Christine seems more staccato on some notes in ToM
- Phantom still says “Bravi”/“Bravissimi” before AoM
- Phantom is more mocking on “brave young suitor” than usual — Ethan/Brad influence?
- Chorus added to title song — lyrics are “A world hidden in darkness… That is the Phantom of the Opera”
- IHBY - Watashi ga (instead of wa)? Grammatically iffy; probably a flub
- Extra timpani on “long to be” — live orchestra?
- Orchestra mostly at the usual (somewhat fast) tempo for Japanese MOTN, but slower in last instrumental break?
- Music box kept slow, unlike London/Bway/restaged
- Phantom a bit ahead of the beat in “Damn you” section of STYDI
- Magical Lasso — lines rearranged (description of Phantom first, then avoiding being caught)
- Changed line for “In which case I think our meeting is adjourned,” and possibly for Firmin’s spoken part reading Phantom’s note
- Slower tempo for first verse of “Prima Donna”
- Slower tempo for first part of “Poor Fool…” and in the ballet
- Rather Earl-like laugh after Buquet’s hanging
- Restaged orchestrations for “But his voice filled my spirit…”
- Sound effects make it seem like they did something like the restaged or new London version for the chandelier drop?
- Gets rather slow in the instrumental break for Masquerade
- Need to go over “Madame Giry’s Tale” in older boots to see if anything was changed
- Chaotic bit in Notes 2 doesn’t get as fast… I liked that it did in the older versions
- “Twisted Every Way” is slower, which I *am* glad for
- Christine says “I can’t do it,” orchestra transition is like the restaged version
- “Hide your sword now, wounded knight” bit in DJT Rehearsal may be changed?
- POTO reprise before graveyard changed to original title song lyrics
- WYWSHA second verse changed, somewhat flipped the lines
- Second “help me say goodbye” added
- “Wandering Child” now a trio; Raoul’s lines added
- Intro and many sections of “Don Juan” performance sound quite slow
- Some laughter added for Piangi and Passarino
- PONR slower, more like other productions’ tempos
- Kokoro *mo* kimeta wa? (“My heart has *also* decided”)
- Good tentative emotion from Phantom in AIAOY reprise after PONR
- Phantom yells “Naze? Naze da?” (“Why? Why?”) instead of singing “Naze kou na no da?” (“Why does it have to be this way?”)
- “Track Down This Murderer” after Raoul’s dive starts quite slow, gets faster
- Octave jump in “it’s in your soul…” brought back
- Phantom’s reply to Raoul in
- now “Nasake nado shiranai (“I don’t know compassion” instead of “I don’t have compassion”)
- “Sou, mohaya modorenai” — last “We’ve passed the point of no return” in Final Lair is changed
- “Make your choice” shouted rather than sung
- Slow drumbeat
- “Go now…” shouted rather than sung
- Mistake from the brass in MOTN section of playout
Cheers!

The Phantom of the Opera in Tokyo, Japan, 2020. (Although, some photos might be from earlier productions).
Shiki (the producer) never labels the actors in their photos, apparently they want to make the show the star and not the individual actors. The only one I’m 99% confident in labeling is Susumu Kato, I believe he’s Raoul in all the photos.
The overall cast is...
Christine Daaé:  Sai Yamamoto / Chiaki Kainuma / Asami Iwashiro The Phantom of the Opera: Masayuki Sano / Yuta Iwaki / Yosuke Iida Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny: Susumu Kato / Kenichi Mitsuda Carlotta Giudicelli: Aya Kawamura / Yoko Takai Monsieur Andre: Morito Masuda / Yusuke Kitazawa Monsieur Firmin: Koichi Taira / Toshihide Mura Madame Giry:  Aiko Toda / Jihye Hwang Meg Giry: Yu Matsuo / Mariko Gosho Ubaldo Piangi:  Yasunobu Yamaguchi / Atsuto Yamada / Takata Nagai Monsieur Reyer: Ura Makotonori Auctioneer / Monsieur Lefevre: * Kaname Shimura Joseph Buquet: Yuichi Mitsuke / Nobuhiro Kawahara Don Attilio / Passarino: Osamu Takai

"Kita no Kuni Kara"
139.
Tumblr media
Title: “Kita no Kuni Kara” Genre: Human drama Season: Fall 1981 TV Station: Fuji TV Theme Song: “Kita no Kuni Kara” by Sada Masashi Starring: Kunie Tanaka, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Tomoko Nakajima, Ayumi Ishida, Keiko Takeshita, Koichi Iwaki, Mieko Harada Date Finished: June 23, 2021 My Personal Reason for Watching: My first ever subtitle job for Hawaii’s local Japanese channel, KIKU, was for this drama:)
Tumblr media
(^^ This drama makes me want to visit Hokkaido)
“Kita no Kuni Kara” is a story about Jun (Yoshioka) and Hotaru (Nakajima) Kuroita who move to the town of Furano from Tokyo with their father, Goro (Tanaka) after his divorce from their mother Reiko (Ishida). Reiko’s sister, Yukiko (Takeshita) moves in with them as well. The drama follows this family as they learn to survive in Hokkaido.
Tumblr media
(^^ You know you’re in Hokkaido when you see wild foxes around)
This drama was 24 episodes and aired from 1981 to 1982. It has become cemented into Japanese popular culture and was so popular that it aired specials throughout the years until 2002. It seems like everyone knows about it, so when I received this drama to subtitle, I was excited to get started. With its popular culture status in Japan, it’s needless to say that this is a great drama. While I did watch it for work, I became fully invested and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I started to watch the specials (there are a total of 8 specials) and it’s so fun to see the kids grow up!
Tumblr media
(^^ Hotaru and Jun, you’re in your 40s/50s now! XD)
The cast of characters both main and supporting were all great. Jun got annoying sometimes as he always complained, but you couldn’t blame him (I mean, if I was that age and I had to live without TV or electricity, I would be complaining, too haha). Hotaru was so cute! She always supported her father and never complained like her brother. I liked that Goro had a support system in Furano like his cousin Seikichi and his family as well as his classmate Nakahata. The Yukiko and Sota romance plotline was nice to watch but I got so mad at Sota for practically abandoning Tsurara for Yukiko! Ugh men! XD While the plots and storylines were pretty consistent, some plotlines were kind of random. For example, the whole UFO subplot where the kids saw a UFO and the teacher got abducted by one and disappeared. The timing makes it look like UFOs/aliens were popular (Close Encounters, ET, etc. all came out around that time) but it was so random!
Tumblr media
(^^ A UFO in Hokkaido?! Didn’t know they were common there…o_0)
While it is quite long for a Japanese drama, I cannot recommend it enough. If you like Japanese dramas, this one has to be towards the top of your watch list as far as classic dramas.
Favorites: Favorite Character: Hotaru! Definitely the best character in this drama. Favorite Episode: All of them are good and have different storylines. I like the one with the Yukiko/Sota plotline (it was towards the beginning before she goes back to Tokyo for a while) as well as the controversy with Ryoko Sensei as well as the storylines revolving Shokichi’s grandfather. The blizzard episode was a good one, too! Favorite Scene: The drama is well-shot and I can’t pinpoint a specific scene that I liked the best.
Tumblr media
(^^ The lavender fields! The overall nature! Take me to Hokkaido!)
“Kita no Kuni Kara” Rating: Story: ✭✭✭✭½ Beautiful drama. Taking off half a star for those random storylines lol. Acting: ✭✭✭✭✭ This. Cast. That is all. Theme Song: ✭✭✭✭½ If there’s one thing that makes this drama special is this fantastic score. Do yourself a favor and check out the score from Masashi Sada. Total: 14/15
Next Up: “Kanojo wa Kirei Datta” maybe?
Tumblr media
(^^ RIP Kunie Tanaka :( )

Note
I think Faiz was so succesful bc it was Jdrama but not really risqué. Which is sad bc nexus and metalder are my fav brand of toku - somber and slightly tragic (1/2)
On a different note, what is your fav jdramas with sexy older men aside from the obviously iconic Dorokei? (2/2)
Maybe while we’re at it, favorite sexy older actors? (3/2)
hm. i guess? mainstream tv-tier Interpersonal Drama isn’t exactly a known selling point for little kids, though. inoue just managed it somehow that wily bastard. at least faiz’s nonsense (the schoolyard-esque roundabout of i like her but she likes him but he likes-) was maybe a little more relatable to children than his other soap opera shit.
whenever i get asked about dramas i start to realize how few i’ve actually seen in my life... but in that category i also really like
60 gohan taisakushitsu - this finally got subbed recently and uh. man. did not expect it to be like it was. i mean that in a good way, just kinda thought it’d be a typical legal procedural but it’s very cinematic and tense and raw. if you like handsome grandpas it’s got that content for sure but occasionally he’s also a total pathetic mess going off the deep end so it might not be for everyone
honcho azumi - very cute police detective dad leads his team who all love him to solve some pretty interesting and sentimental crimes. still only seen s1 and for all i know the others aren’t as good but at least i know for sure mr sasaki will still be very cute in them. kamen rider hibiki is here too as his best friend
suits - tried the korean version and it was SO unbelievably dull and then tried the jpn version and was like wow. what a difference. this has actual characters who are fun and likeable in it and doesn’t bore me to death with legal talk. mr oda yuji isn’t technically my type of old guy but he brings a real Charmingly Annoying Man sexiness to the role. whenever he’s onscreen i’m like “oh this character is such a bottom”
yamegoku - kitamura kazuki kinda seems like he never ages so looking it up just now to find he was 46 here is like. seriously?? his character is a former gangster trying to reform other gangsters and help them escape The Business and he’s the stupidest himbo of all time, it’s great
and not a jdrama but if you don’t mind quite a bit of violence please watch a chinese movie called “bodies at rest” i’m obsessed with it
and i’d probably answer that last question with roughly my same list of hot older men i’d like to see in rider https://kabutoraiger.tumblr.com/post/624948572447735808/
but also asano tadanobu and iwaki koichi (ultimate foxy grandpa)
