Platform : AO3 (Cross-posted on Tumblr) Synopsis : The Ishidas were a family of twins,4 girls & 2 boys. They lived tranquil lives in a quaint house just across the street from their grandparents; until one day, their golden years abruptly ended. 700+ words : “Twins?Again?” Whether it was uncertainty, disbelief, shock or awe, my parents were asked this a couple of times whenever they announced the birth of their newborns. It’s as if they had a say in whether or not we came as a set of twins, as if they were pulling cosmic strings during my mother’s pregnancy. But hand on heart, that was just our family and how each of us came in twos. My twin sister and I were the first of this phenomenon, my parents were just grateful and ecstatic they could have children to begin with. Then came our younger twin brothers, this is when it felt like a joke, a silly comedy bit. We lived across the street from our grandparents, both maternal and paternal. Despite her age, Grandmother Yuuko welcomed a pair of twins not long after the boys were born; this was when people started to question us. It was jarring because before us, our family never had a history of twins. Our parents were young adults when they had us, and our grandparents were at least double that age. Four sets of twins were born, the exception was Grandmother Natsuko’s baby girl; but I’m getting ahead of myself.Our parents were fairly quiet people, private by nature. Our father looked aloof and cold, but really he was just a bit awkward, and had a heart as big as the moon itself. Our mother was a mysterious figure,always putting others before herself even before she became a mum; her smiles were brighter and warmer than the sun. I suppose that's another funny bit, a couple who were like the sun and moon went on to have three pairs of twins. It was like our family came straight out of a fairy tale, but this was very much our day-to-day lives. “We’re made in pairs,” our parents used to say to us as we were tucked in for the night, like a lullaby that came as a mantra. Our house was always filled with melodies and tunes, all while basking in rays of light and nestled in sunny spots. Papa would be cooking dinner on the stove, even on days he’d come home from work at nine and the younger kids would be asleep. As we did our homework, Mama would sit by our side,also grading papers. With two toddlers and two newborns, they hardly slept, assuring my twin sister and me that we didn’t need to help in the middle of the night. They were always so tired, but that never stopped them from making sure we were living the best childhood they could offer;they were gentle and patient with all six of us rugrats. Maybe I was full of it, but I always felt like I had bigger shoes to fill in as the oldest sibling. Papa was an older sibling too, though he and Uncle Takeru lived apart, he confessed he's been overprotective of him since they were kids. I could see that when he married Mama and had us, he prefers taking care of her more than he'll ever let her spoil him; and it was like he had eyes on the back of his head when it came to us. I wanted to make it easier on them, be the responsible child and keep an extra eye out for the kids. Even my twin sister, who arguably was born just a couple of seconds after me, I couldn't help but baby her. It was a shame when we moved out, leaving the quaint house we made our home. It was a rather difficult move too, we weren't just leaving behind a house, it was like we were also forced to abandon the golden years of our childhood.It was a goodbye we didn't think would happen so soon, us kids were blind to the events leading up to it. There was another thing I found jarring about our past, or rather, our parents'. I found a photograph of them, our uncles and their friends dated 1999; but the photograph doesn't look like it was even taken in Japan.What's more, there are all these 'creatures' surrounding them. They're not animals, they look like they could be live-sized dolls, and they're definitely not from this world. I need to know what they are. So here I am, standing in front of the abandoned Ishida house, uncovering the childhood of my siblings and me; and hopefully discovering a bit more about our parents.
