Chapter Summary:
Jack is not having a good day. Davey helps him through it but they manage to change their relationship status to “complicated” in the process. Because of course they do.
Extract:
He contented himself with rubbing Jack's back as the headphones were put away, hoping it would do something to help calm Jack.
The lesson began, however, Davey couldn't focus again. This time, it was Jack that distracted him.
Jack's eyes were almost cloudy, as if he was seeing something that wasn't there. And he began clicking his wrist as he had demonstrated when he came to dinner the other day.
Pursing his lips, Davey slid a note over.
“Are you okay?”
Jack stared at the note, his breathing intensifying slightly. Without looking away from the slip of paper, he gave an almost invisible shake of his head.
No.
That was enough for Davey.
He scribbled two notes and handed one to Jack.
“Grab your headphones and get out.”

hey can we get some of those blessed italian race headcannons please
oh HELL YES you can!!
- Race’s mom is extremely Italian. Like, Italian immigrant Italian. English is her second language and she raises her kids to speak both English and Italian!
- When he’s in elementary and middle school he teaches his friends all the Italian swear words he knows. They never get in trouble for it, because none of their teachers speak Italian. But Race certainly gets in trouble when his 5th grade friends run around his birthday party shouting “minchia!” (shit!) over and over
- Race tries to get out of taking a foreign language in high school by pretending like he doesn’t speak fluent Italian so he can get an easy A, but forgets he’s supposed to be faking it and reads a passage from the textbook fluently and is moved to French I instead.
- When he’s in college, Race minors in Italian and studies abroad for a semester in Italy and vows he’ll take his boyfriend back one day, because the only thing that would make that time in Italy better would’ve been if Spot was with him.
- Race makes the BEST Italian food. He knows he’s a walking cliche and he doesn’t care, his mom’s spaghetti sauce recipe is the best in the world and he’ll fight anyone who says otherwise
- Spot SUPER LOVES when Race makes Italian food because it’s always insanely delicious, but what Spot loves even MORE is when Race makes gets super picky whenever they go out on dates to Italian restaurants and gets extremely judgey of the food (also the atmosphere and music and authenticity of the restaurants) like he will find SOMETHING to be salty about and Spot thinks it’s the funniest thing ever.
- Race sings in Italian sometimes, but usually only when he’s cooking. It’s something his mom always did growing up and making dinner doesn’t seem right if he isn’t singing some sort of Italian music while doing it.
- Remember how I said Spot sleeptalks in Spanish?? Race 100% sleeptalks in Italian. Like 9 times out of 10 if he’s sleep talking, it’s all in Italian.
- When Race is super angry or frustrated he rambles in Italian under his breath. Spot learned a lot of Italian swears this way.
- Race calls Spot Italian petnames from pretty much the second they start dating. His heart absolutely melts when Spot calls him Spanish ones in return. Race’s favorite nicknames to call Spot are “Amore”(Love), “Tesoro” (Darling), and “Cuore mio” (My heart).
- after they get married, Spot surprises Race with a honeymoon to Italy. They spend a week drinking wine and eating real Italian food and Race proudly translates everything for his husband, who impresses him by having picked up a decent amount of Italian (though he definitely mixes up the verbs with Spanish ones).

spot: spanish and english!! hispanic and latino spot conlon is basically a constant in Any Fic I Ever Write, and especially in losing my mind, its a big part of his day-to-day life. (and he makes fun of crutchie CONSTANTLY for his terrible accent.) but yeah hes a bilingual brooklyn bitch and i love him!!!!
jack: also spanish and english– his bio mom spoke spanish, and when medda adopted him, she made sure to have him keep speaking it so he didnt lose it. he tried his damn best to learn yiddish for daveys family but couldnt really get into it– hes good at languages when hes familiar with them or with the roots, but learning something completely new is hard for him. (he has a nasty habit of forgetting a word in one language but not the other, and as soon as he realized that davey was there at any given moment to say “its headache, babe,” he was like Okay This Is The Man I’m Going To Marry)
smalls– it really varies based on the au! i dont have one determined hc for her, but i really like the idea of her loving the way that languages work, so i feel like she learns a little bit of whatever she can. i have a spot for her knowing italian, and also for her knowing greek! and i think somewhere i have a wip where she knew asl, too. smalls is an intelligent fantastic gal and she owns my heart!!!

If you endgame ship jackcrutchie, how does that work with canon events (asking respectfully.) Was Jack ever attracted to kath and/or Davey? Does he try it with one of them and then go back to Crutchie? If so does that hurt Crutchie's feelings at all/does he date anybody else?
in my mind jack didnt think of crutchie as an option cuz its the 1890s and ppl wouldnt even talk about that kind of stuff. he definitely liked katherine and their relationship was meaningful but sometimes things just dont work out with people. maybe their lives are just headed in different directions and they thought they were better off as friends. jack would realize how he felt about crutchie MONTHS after that, and they wouldnt get together till many years later.
crutchie has known he was in love with him since day one, no one finds out until jack gets with katherine and race notices how it affects him. race and spot are the only ones who know until they eventually figure their shit out. jack probably tells race and/or spot at some point as well, making them both go insane trying to convince each of them to do something about it. davey would probably be the first person jack would tell tho.
regarding davey, i dont think jack ever was attracted to him (except in 92sies cuz there is no other explanation for that shit). i personally love aroace davey but if not that then maybe davey had a little crush on him for a bit, but it faded pretty fast after the strike. him and jack are besties.
if you cant tell i love jack and crutchie dearly and they have a home in my head.

Chapter 2: (Snippet)
The way Jack's eyes shone made him so happy he had done it. "Sorry, Race," Jack said, handing the notebook back. "Davey's my best friend now."
"Say what now?"
Davey silently yelped when a blonde boy seemed to pop out of nowhere in front of him.
He looked around, trying to work out where the boy came from as Jack introduced him. "Davey, meet Anthony Higgins. Also known as Race, Racer, Racetrack, or - if he really like you - Tony." Then Jack reassured him. "He's like a cartoon character, it's not just you. He has a tendency to just appear."
Race was obviously very proud of his freakish superpower as his smile nearly split his face. "Nice to meet you. But let's get this straight. I'm Jack's best friend. Only exception is Charlie. Also known as Crutchie if you feel like challenging society.”
Davey raised an eyebrow and scribbled "is that a challenge?" on the page.
"Davey's mute," Jack explained.
"Oh, so he's good at saving his breath.”
“Damn.”
Davey shoved Sarah.
“Boys, calm down.”
Jack groaned in a good-natured fashion as a girl with auburn hair joined them.
“And here's Kath.”
Kath smiled. “Katherine Pulitzer. Jack’s ex-girlfriend and current wingwoman.
“You're doing an awful job at it.”

Summary:
David Jacobs has been mute since he was twelve and thought all his dreams were dead.

Chapter 1: Nail Polish (Snippet)
"Is there a problem, Jack?" The teacher had stopped and raised an eyebrow at him.
When he turned to Davey for help, Davey raised his hands and widened his eyes, his meaning obvious: "Don't look at me, I'm mute."
"Uhh, sorry, Davey here wasn't quite sure what you meant so I was trying to explain."
Once the teacher had resumed her lesson, Jack glared at Davey, kicking him, only to be rewarded with Davey beaming at him, those blue eyes crinkled as he was pulled under the waves again.
Unfortunately, they didn't share their last lesson, with Davey in physics ("Oh, you're a nerd") and Jack in history.
"Give me your number." Davey signed rapidly, pulling out his phone and handing it to Jack.
"Bossy," Jack teased but he obliged, sending himself a text from Davey's phone so he'd have his number as well. "Text ya later?"
Davey gave him an enthusiastic nod before vanishing into the crowd.
Jack stood there, taking deep breaths to settle himself before making his way to class.

Chapter 4 (Sneak peak):
But Miss Medda shook her head. “You've been much happier since you met Davey. He's done you a world of good.”
Jack was silent as Miss Medda left. He didn't move till all the other lights in the apartment were turned off and the other bedroom door creaked closed.
Then, he carefully put his laptop away, hiding under the covers and opened his chat with Davey.
They had been talking for over two hours. Davey was smart and interested in everything Jack had to say.
Jack wondered how interested he'd be if he knew what Jack had to say about Davey.
His wrist ached around the time Jack's thoughts drifted to how much he liked to see Davey laugh or the crinkled eyes when he smiled or the way Davey always signed Jack's name as if it was the most important thing he had ever had to do.
Thankfully, he got a text from Race, which quickly distracted him.

Chapter 3 Summary:
Jack visits the Jacobs and someone he hasn’t seen in quite a while.
Chapter Sneak Peak:
Medda squeezed Jack’s shoulder. “You okay, sugar?”
“Can...can I have a hug, please?” Jack asked, sounding very small.
“Of course.”
It was a little difficult with both of them still buckled in. But Jack sagged in relief at the comfort. Medda had such a comforting presence.
There was only one person that Jack had ever found more comforting.
And he was waiting inside for Jack.
After several deep breaths, Jack got out of the car, waving Miss Medda off. He didn't bother with the bell, instead shooting a quick text announcing his arrival.
The wait was agonising and at one point, Jack considered turning and leaving.
But then the door creaked open.
“Jack?”

here’s two little excerpts from my latino spot fic.
(i rarely finish creative pieces, but i’m hoping that this one will be different hahaha. but if it isn’t, at least there’s this?)
“it’s not as busy as i thought it would be,” race muses, stretching his long legs out and letting the saltwater just barely touch him. “there are practically no tourists.” he looks around. “there are actually no tourists. there is no one. did you bring me here to kill me?”
“oh, please,” spot scoffs. “if i wanted to kill you, i would have done it a long time ago, and you know it.”
blah blah blah
here’s another:
the dreamlike state is broken when race’s voice cuts through his thoughts, “do you think we’ll see a manatee?”
spot turns to look at race, who had stopped wading in once the water reached his waist, and raises his eyebrows. “excuse me?”
“a manatee,” race repeats. “like the one you and your cousin saw when you were paddle boarding.”
spot laughs, loud and bright, and beckons race closer. the taller boy begrudgingly walks deeper until the waves lap at his shoulders, and spot is treading water. “that was four years ago, and the manatee wasn’t even supposed to be that close to shore.”
“is that a no?” race pouts.
“’fraid so.”
