hey anyone got any good book recs? I just finished looker by laura sims, and before that haunted castles: the complete gothic stories by ray russell. rn im very into the short story format or quick reads (easy to read at work) and also things that are a bit fucked up or draw your own conclusion endings. i love lots of different genres: mysteries, gothic horror, fantasy. you name it. if you've got a book you wanna share please let me know!

Saffron is standing at the sink trying to regain her composure before her next class, after spending the last five minutes locked in a cubicle crying silent, spasmodic tears. She was crying because she had realised that actions have real, life-changing consequences; and because she had been right all along not to put her trust in people, knowing as she did now that they were always going to let her down and betray her. And she cried because she had mistakenly thought that she had found someone who might truly listen to her, who might actually take the time and effort to understand her hopes and dreams and flaws and insecurities. But no, she had been right all along to be wary and cynical, even though there was no satisfaction at all to be gained from having been proven correct once again.  

The door opens behind her and she bends her head and reaches quickly for the tap and turns it on, pretending to be engrossed in washing her hands. It takes a couple of moments for her to look up and register that the person who entered the bathroom is Laura, and that she is standing behind her in the mirror with an inscrutable look on her face.  

“What is your fucking problem?” says Saffron, spinning around to confront her. “Why are you standing there staring at me?”

Laura and Franklin's wedding was a huge event for the film industry. Everybody was talking about it, and their faces were all over the newspapers and magazines for days. Any doubts and rumours about their relationship preferences were quickly forgotten or at least shoved to the side, making room for talks about the beautiful dress and the love they were so clearly feeling for each other.

Especially Niall could use the distraction. At first, he was hesitant to go, not wanting another adult thing to worry about. But when he was actually there, it was not as bad after all. In fact, he quite enjoyed watching his friends' live performance and could not help but chuckle at the presence of the reporters whom Laura had been sure to invite anonymously. The best way to combat gossip really was just giving the people a bigger thing to talk about, and the papers did not disappoint.

Coup de Majesté

A coup de Majesté is a brutal act or order dictated by the monarch, notably to forcibly subdue the beginnings of opposition, or even rebellion or revolt against him, and thus re-establish his authority or power.

Laura

Age 19.

Born Laura Aliénor France Delcroix. She was a friend of Emperor Napoleon V, whom she had met at the Ecole Polytechnique.

Laura is the Emperor's only commoner friend, and a sort of confidante to him. They met by chance during their military internship at university, where they were placed in the same group. Unexpectedly, the two share much in common and will soon be entering the Naval Academy together to become naval officers.

At their last meeting, the emperor revealed to Laura his intention to ennoble her and, in the long term, integrate her into the Imperial House. She hasn't yet agreed: she doesn't feel comfortable in the world of nobility and jet-setting. Also, she wouldn't want the merits she achieved to be attributed to her friendship with the emperor, or give the impression that she was taking advantage of him.

Connor re-enters the main school building five minutes before the end of lunch, and ten minutes after Saffron stormed off and left him sitting alone on a bench next to the basketball courts. He feels cold, and rebuffed, and frustrated. It doesn’t enhance his mood to see Laura and Wesley laughing with each other in front of the lockers.

“Hey, baby!” says Laura when she sees him. “Is everything okay?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?” he scowls.

“Because I thought I saw you and Saffron having what looked like a little bit of an argument earlier? Just after assembly?”

He narrows his eyes at her but she exchanges a glance with Wesley and continues.

“And then when Wes saw Saffron a few minutes ago on the stairs, he said ‘Hi’ to her she told him to fuck off!”

“So? What’s unusual about that?” says Connor.

“Well, she looked like she was crying,” says Wesley.
