Madame Sherri’s Castle
West Chesterfield, New Hampshire
In the 1920s, Madame Antoinette Sherri was a French costume designer who catered to the actors and actresses in New York City. She moved there from France with her husband in 1911. Madame Sherri also did a little Vaudeville acting, dancing, and singing on the side. During the summers she would visit with an actor friend who spent his summers in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire. She liked the area so much that after her friend passed away, in 1927 she built a chateau style mansion in the area and would host very large extravagant parties of which most of the guests were the rich and elite from New York City. The mansion had a grand stairway made of stone that led to a large red door which served as the entrance. Local residents referred to her chateau as Madame Sherri’s Castle.

Madame Sherri became known to the locals in West Chesterfield as quite an eccentric. She was known to cruise around town in her cream colored Packard touring convertible wearing nothing but a fur coat. When she was wearing clothes, she wore some of her extravagant costumes that she designed. Besides the lavish parties that she would throw in the mansion, she lived in a much smaller cottage near the place. That home was later discovered to be packed full of boxes and such, leaving very little room for living space. There always seemed to be a entourage of young french beauties that was in her company which led some to believe she used the castle as a brothel.
As Madame Sherri grew older and had a harder time getting around she moved to a nursing home in Brattleboro, Vermont. Over the years her castle sat empty and had been looted and vandalized several times. In 1962 the castle burned to the ground. Madame Sherri made arrangements to have the grounds and castle remains sold. On the day the sale was finalized, Madame Sherri passed away. Many believe that this meant her spirit was tied to the castle and remains there to this day.

Today, the castle ruins remain in what is now the Madame Sherri Forest near West Chesterfield, New Hampshire. The stone foundation, fireplace and grand stairway entrance are still intact. Many visitors to what remains of Madame Sherri’s castle claim that they heard the sounds of a grand party emanating from the ruins with music playing, guests chattering and having a good time. Others say they have seen the Madame Sherri’s apparition ascending the grand staircase in one of her extravagant dresses.
The Madame Sherri Forest is a 488 acre preserve open to the public and can be found near West Chesterfield, New Hampshire on Gulf Road just off the Vermont border.

Escape into a World of Wonders: Besieged Teaser, Haunted Castles, Sizzling Audiobooks, Adventurous Stories, and Free Beach Reads!
Hello, my Freaky Darlings! Greetings from the frozen arse end of Africa. It’s been an interesting and distracting week. Like millions of people across the globe who have gone searching for a refuge from the hate-filled vitriolic world of Twitter (apparently, being a Twitter refugee is a thing), I’ve found a surprising haven in the arms of Threads. The whole atmosphere is light and fluffy and just…

Franklin Castle
Ohio
Also known as the most haunted house in Ohio, Franklin Castle was built in 1881 by Hannes Tiedemann, who was a German banker. Around ten years after the castle was built, Hannes’ daughter, Emma, allegedly succumbed to her diabetes and passed. Not too long afterward, his elderly mother followed suit. During the following three years, the Tiedemann’s lost three more children, which raised suspicions that there was more to the deaths than it seemed. To distract his wife from the awful tragedies, Hannes continued to add onto the house, giving more of a vast castle feel. It is rumored that the house was also given hidden room and passage ways to aide in prohibition, or possibly more sinister means. Eventually, Hannes’ wife passed in 1895 and he sold the house. While there is no substantial evidence, many people believe that there were multiple atrocities committed in the house by Hannes, including the murder of his niece, a servant girl, and even his own daughter.

The house laid empty from then up until 1968 when James Romano, his wife, and their six childen moved into the castle. Not long after, they reported seeing multiple ghosts. Other accounts included hearing an organ playing in the house, their children playing with “phantom friends”, and even Mrs. Romano reported feeling the presence of Mrs. Tiedemann herself. They had reportedly attempted several exorcisms and had even tried bringing in a ghost hunting crew. It is reported that one of the investigators was so frightened by what they experienced, they ran from the house screaming. By 1974, the Romano family was fed up, and moved out.

The house was sold to Sam Muscatello, who hosted tours of the house for curious thrill-seekers. During a live segment on a Cleveland radio station, the host had his recording device pulled from his shoulder and thrown. Another person claimed to have witnessed seeing a ceiling light spinning on its own. Sam soon began to search the castle for the secret passages, but what he found was far more sinister. Found tucked away behind a panel in the tower was a set of human bones. While many wild stories floated around about who the bones belonged to and how they got there, the authorities confirmed that they were VERY old and definitely human. After this, Sam sold the house and it bounced around for years from owner to owner. No one would live in the house long.
Recently, the house was bought and is currently being renovated to be a 3 family home. One can only hope these renovations don’t stir up some vengeful spirits.

Spooky and the Supernatural Series: Haunted Castles
Supernatural, Spooky, Creature and Places Series we continue with ….
Today’s Topic: Haunted Castles
Tumblr media
The Craigdarroch Castle, this picture may look familiar if you are an X-Men fans! Home of the mutants. It is actually a Canadian Castle in Victoria British Columbia, and it’s considered haunted. To me that’s like bonus points!
Completed being built in 1908, 114 years old, the original family Dunsmuir are said to haunt this place, with incidents, a ghostly woman pulling blankets off people sleeping, pots clanging and a white figure drifting through the halls.
Tumblr media
Casa Loma, in Toronto Ontario, was built in 1911-1914, Sir henry Pellatt spent $3.5 million dollars to build it and then filled it with priceless artwork. Casa Loma, even though there are not documented deaths at the castle, it is definitely haunted, guests and staff have reported voices, footsteps, doors that open on their own, several people have witness apparitions. It is haunted by a mysterious lady in white who has been seen in the basement, it is believed that she is the spirit of a maid who worked there in the early 1900s. Guests have seen Sir Henry Pellatt and Lady Mary Pellatt, and there is a ghost that haunts the tunnel.
It has been in movies: Beauty and the Beast, Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, X-Men and Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
Other Notable Haunted Castles:
Moosham Castle, Austria (built in the 12th century) - During the Witch Trials between 1675 - 1690, hosted many executions, imprisonments and torturing of hundreds of men and women, staff report banging, footsteps, seeing white mists, and feeling someone breathing on them.
Houska Castle, Czech Republic (built in the 13th century) - This castle was built over a large hole in the ground that is thought to be bottomless. Building over it was a way to seal up the gateway and keep demonic creatures from entering our world. Before sealing it off, nearby prisoners were granted pardons if they agreed to be lowered into the hole by a rope and report back what they saw. When the first prisoner was lowered, he started screaming after a few seconds, when he was brought back up, he had appeared to have aged 30 years.
Burg Eltz, Germany (built in the 12th century)- Countess Agnes haunts the castle, her breastplate and battle axe remain in her bedroom, she is said to have died defending her castle from an undesirable suitor.
Bhangarh Fort, India (built in 1613) - Considered one of the most haunted places in India, hidden deep in the state of Rajasthan at the foot of the Aravali Mountain range.
Himeji Castle, Japan (built in the 14th century) - There is a ghost that haunts the castle at night, counts dishes and shrieks before returning to the well.
Larnach Castle, New Zealand (built between 1871-1887) - Kate Larnach haunts the ballroom, taps on your shoulder, whispers in your ears, the building has been visited by paranormal investigators and featured on Ghost Hunters International.
Bran Castle, Romania (built in 14th century) - Home of Vlad the Impaler, inspiration for Bram Stoker - Vlad III Dracula
Edinburgh Castle, Scotland (built in 1103) There are visitors from colonial prisoners from the American Revolution War, and French prisoners from the Seven Years War, and a ghost dog that wanders the grounds.
Castle of Good Hope, South Africa (built in the 17th century) - haunted by prisoners who drowned in the dungeon, a large black dog, a bell that rings by itself, and lights that switch on and off by themselves.
A short story of mine with a ghost, “Stop Knocking”. This short story and others that you can download and read for free at my website.
Keep watch for every creek and bump you hear at night; you never know what or who might be watching you!

me sexting: No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met nearly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.
