Trope: enemies to lovers

Enemies-To-Lovers: Grade A (Spend my time combing AO3 for it)

I have to be honest, when I go for enemies-to-lovers, what I actually crave 99% of the time is enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, but that's really long to type out and a lot of people just write 'enemies-to-lovers' as shorthand for that.

True enemies-to-lovers is something I don't usually enjoy, where the characters simply continue to genuinely hate each other the entire relationship-- like, I'm not into reading hatesex or whatever, that just doesn't happen to be my thing.

But if it's somebody who thinks they really really hate someone but there's another part of their brain that secretly really likes them? *chef's kiss* That's good stuff. Can't get enough.

And if they're sworn rivals and they start to develop a friendly rapport and slowly change from frenemies to something deeper, and are the only two people who truly understand one another? And it gradually shifts from hate to affection? And one day, the one person they used to hate the most is the one person they could now never imagine themselves apart from? 🥺 Aw heck yeah.

most important thing of them all: the title is a line taken from children of the sun by poets of the fall which is one of the songs Of All Time. if you ask me. it makes me insane.

the fic itself it's very simple, which is also why i never managed to write it all beside a couple of sketched scenes, because i have a habit of tangling myself up in easy things and make them all of a sudden very complicated; this fic has been sitting on my desktop for a while now, and followed me through one change of pc - i'll finish it one day, i swear. to heath, the og depressed mercenary blorbo.

that said: the game is over, nergal and the red dragon are defeated and the forces that put elibe into disarray are sedated, there is a prospect of peace. heath, that had defected while the kingdom of bern was under the influence of the nergal controlled black fang, is at an impasse: on one hand, he has the chance to go back to bern with vaida and help restore his kingdom's honour (and mend somewhat the wound to his own honour he made by defecting, although he did for the right reasons) on the other... he does have kind of a thing going with legault and he does have a chance of helping while also being a mercenary, and that "friendship between fugitives" thing may be more than just friendship. that would also mean put his life upside down for the second time.

legault by the end of the game has just helped bring down the organisation, from which he fled when nergal had taken power, yes, but he had worked for for a big part of his life. also he just had to put down the zombie of his sort of ex. he knows that now that vaida is back in the picture heath will probably follow her back into bern to get back to his knightly stuff and he's fine with it. he wasn't serious when he proposed heath run away with him, not at all.

(tldr; very stupid post game pointless angsty fluff where they decide to stay together because they should have had a paired ending why didn't they have a paired ending i'm still mad at a 2003 GBA game)

Legault's soft laugh took Heath by surprise: "Always such a knight," he murmured and turned his head to kiss Heath's open hand, "never change", he added, quietly, and Heath didn't hear it as well as he felt Legault's lips move against his own palm.

He frowned: "You know I'm not a knight anymore," he said. Legault closed his eyes and was silent for a long moment. He felt him take a deep breath and Heath knew he said the wrong words.
