Hello everyone!! We're looking to pick up possibly one or two mods to help with the workload, if anyone is interested! It's been a bit difficult to maintain 13 posts/day between the two of us, and with enough help, we should be able to maintain that queue rate or maybe even increase it a little! There's also some things that would be really nice to do if all of the time we spent dedicated to the blog wasn't just making sure the queue didn't empty out haha

The main modding responsibilities include:

Gathering album information into the planning spreadsheet.

Taking that information and drafting the posts to queue them.

Less importantly, helping keep track of links for posted polls and copying over the poll results.

These can largely be completed independently, aside from any obvious ordering restrictions (can't queue a post if you don't have the data put together), so if, for any reason, you're only able to do one of the first two on a temporary or even permanent basis, it would still be a lot of help.

In terms of technological requirements, all information can be accessed on websites free-of-charge, two require a (free) account to get access to the album images, and everything can be done strictly in-browser if needed. We do use Google Sheets for the planning sheet, but I don't think you need a Google account to edit/access it. I do not think this is something that is reasonable to do on mobile, so you would need access to a desktop/laptop computer.

I think things can be made considerably easier if you can use some non-browser programs. I personally use a Windows 10 computer + Firefox for my own workflow, but things aren't impossible without it for sure! There's always more than one way to do things. I have no idea what potential difficulties may occur for someone who is a Mac + Safari user, for instance. Oh! And in terms of communication, Discord is best, so it would be helpful if that's something you use as well!

Also we're all here to have fun so like this isn't a job much less a role with strict expectations, so it doesn't have to be like a primary responsibility for you or anything like that!

Also apologies if I take a bit to get back to anyone who does send a message! I'm multitasking between my job and some other obligations so I might not see any notifications right away, and I need to coordinate adding any new mods with my co-mod so there might be a bit of waiting involved unfortunately!! Admin housekeeping incoming — just wanted to write a few updates on some upcoming projects.

1) I've done some major redesigns to my tumblr, so hopefully it will be nicer to look at & easier to use. I will note, however, that some pages might be better suited to desktop viewing & minor decorative pieces could look a little off when viewing on a mobile browser. I don't use the tumblr app, so I'm now realizing that I have no clue how things will look there at all... whoops. If you happen to find something massively broken, send me an ask & I'll look into figuring out what went wrong. It's worth noting that I've set up redirect pages for the two old static masterlists, but you'll need to click the link on them to redirect to the new navigation page since every auto redirect code I found uses JavaScript.

2) The DMMd re:code Materials Book will take a little longer than I originally expected to get up. TL;DR, my day job has been kind of wild this month & the scanner I use was out of commission for a while. I'm hoping to finish it sometime during March, so long as no more wrenches get thrown into my plans.

3) Work on TCN 2009 is progressing relatively smoothly, so I'm still crossing my fingers for things to be finished by White Day. Eagle-eyed folks might've noticed that the new masterlist page for TCN also includes a third event... That DVD will be arriving at some point in the future, but I'll likely work on it during the summer/fall so I can upload some other items first.

4) I have... a lot of things to scan. Like a LOT. We're talking probably close to 1k scans. It's immensely tedious. I will get through everything eventually, but if things get slow around here, it's likely because I'm in scanning hell.

5) Some VK things will eventually be posted on here as well, primarily because I just want someplace to put them. It won't become the focus of this account, & some of it will be of interest to DMMd fans anyway.

6) Lastly... If you're interested in seeing something in particular on here, send me an ask. I can't make any promises — especially if I don't have access to whatever it is — but I will take note if it seems like there's a big interest in something. I'm just one person & I'm paying for everything with my own funds, so please keep that in mind.

first question: so way back in tumblr olden days, lmao, before they changed the layout to where it didn't look like you were clicking on a blog; you'd actually go to someone's page and see their HTML theme, and people found a way to hide their posts in case others went directly to their page (ie. lurkers), and they didn't want them to see them all.

so say when i go to clawbehavior.tumblr.com - i can see everything you post, but with a code, i can hide posts from people who visit that url so ppl who aren't following me don't have to see the personal posts if i don't want them to. the posts that show up on my homepage are tagged with an x. (this does NOT work if you're on your dashboard, and you click someone's name now; all posts will show up).

tumblr kinda/sorta ruined it a bit. now you don't have to be following someone to click their page via the dash (on desktop or mobile) to be able to see every single posts - even those of mine that aren't tagged with x.

but still, if someone randomly wanders onto my page by typing it in or stumbling across a posts via google and then they click on my home theme, they can't see personal posts.

however, there is a way to see all posts aside from clicking on my blog through the dash and/or tags. the code used to direct you to NAME.tumblr.com/tagged/x, and you'd see that link in the search bar. now it doesn't do that anymore, and you just see NAME.tumblr.com, but!! the code still works. if you go directly to my link, you'll only see posts that are tagged x.

there's a special little something you add to the end of NAME.tumblr.com for someone directly on my page to be able to see all posts that aren't tagged with an x.

so long story short, posts not tagged with x cannot be seen by those who visit my page directly; they can still see them if they come across my blog while being a tumblr using desktop/mobile and clicking the name.

second question: i don't feel i use my tagging system as much as i used to. i used to be much more rigorous with it. i like using the name (theme) stuff to describe things, so 'funny stuff' or 'writing stuff' as a catch all for posts of that category. i also try to use tags that i'll remember now esp bc i haven't kept track of many old ones. so i also keep it simple with easy descriptors such as 'text,'

third question: hands down 'the devil judge' or 'the devil judge meta' lol. i'll remember i wrote/saved something, and i gotta go dig for it bc i know it's in one of the two. i don't often go back through tags unless i'm looking for something specific.

short answer: no, sorry! please don't take any offense, i wish you good luck with your challenge! if you like, you can tag my main blog and i could reblog it there, though i honestly don't think it'd be very helpful either way.

long answer:

i want to avoid using this blog to promote things. which i know sounds hypocritical because i do use it to promote my own things sometimes, but this is just limited to 1. my vocaloid music (which i try to promote very sparingly to avoid spam) and 2. livestreams about vocaloid that i think this blog's followers would be interested in (which i've only done 2 of so far and i don't even remember if i promoted the second one lol...they were respectively "discussing every vocaloid voicebank" and "drawing vocaloids from memory"). once enough time has passed sometimes i'll delete my promos just to clean up the blog

there's a couple reasons for this:

i want to avoid too much irrelevant (i.e. not related to vocaloid facts) content on this blog. this is partially to avoid spam/clutter, which would be intrusive if someone just wants to scroll through to look at facts, but also because this will lessen the chances of the random button (which isn't visible on mobile, but it's on the blog's desktop theme) selecting an irrelevant post when its purpose is to show random facts.

i don't think there's that much of a point to it. promoting my own stuff (particularly the music) does get me a little attention on my youtube channel sometimes, but it realistically makes very little difference. i'm not sure anyone has actually found my music through this blog. this blog has over 1k followers and my youtube channel has under 500, and my subscriber count tends to stay stagnant for long periods of time. i can't imagine it would make much of a difference if i promoted your art challenge - the posts themselves might get more reblogs, but the actual amount of participants probably wouldn't increase very substantially.

i personally find it a bit awkward to promote stuff from people i don't know on this blog. or even from people i DO know, honestly. it just doesn't really fit on this blog. i'd be more okay with doing it from my main, but even then i don't typically promote things i don't pay attention to (like music i don't listen to, commissions from artists i don't follow) or participate in (though a vocaloid art challenge might be different - i don't think i'd participate because i'm a slow artist, but it'd at least be interesting to see the art that results from it)

this kinda loops back around to the "minimizing clutter/irrelevant posts" point - but this is a vocaloid trivia/fun facts blog. this is not a general vocaloid blog, i don't use this to share/post just anything vocaloid related (i do plenty of that on main). if i use up all the vocaloid facts, maybe this will change, but i currently have no desire to stray from this blog's purpose.

sorry for the long response! i hope this doesn't come off as a rant or anything, the main reason i'm posting this publicly is in case other people have similar questions/requests in the future. i appreciate you asking!

ive seen many complaints about the way the new Tumblr mobile update has handled pictures. but i have only seen a couple people talking about how deeply inaccessible it is. and i want to go through it.

first I'll explain the changes for anyone who is new or who uses desktop because I'm fairly certain it's different there.

before when you were scrolling on your feed and you tapped on a picture to view it, if there was a margin around the picture it was black. if you double tapped the picture, it would zoom in. you could do this twice and the third time would return it to normal zoom. if you scrolled up or down, it would close the image and put you where you were on your feed before opening the image. if you scrolled to the sides, it would scroll through any other images that were on the same post.

now when you open the image, the margins are filled with a zoomed, cropped, and blurred section of the image. when you double tap, it likes and zooming is difficult. when you swipe up, it gives you a different post, generated by an algorithm to be similar. if you scroll to the side, it brings you to the posters blog. both of the swipe functions also do this when you are zoomed in as well.

i can only speak to my own accessability needs, but there are several and i know i can't be alone in any of them. for context the relevant things are that i have low vision which requires high contrast and photosensitive migraines which require low brightness. as you can imagine, this is a very specific balance of things that is easily made difficult.

firstly, the background of the image. i used to open the image specifically because of the background. increasing the contrast around the edge of the image and removing irrelevant details made it significantly easier to see. there were frequently posts that i straight up couldn't see properly until i opened them. with the new background feature, images that i have opened are impossible to see clearly. i can barely tell where the actual image is and where the background is. i functionally understand the aesthetic value of the change but there are regularly posts that i straight up can't see anymore because of this. there should be an option for high contrast backgrounds available so that people who need it can still have it.

next is the zoom. the double tap to zoom was one of my favorite features. because when something was small or hard to see it was easy to make it visible and i didn't have to change how i was holding my phone. now if i need to zoom, i have to shift and the pinch to zoom is very buggy. it is difficult to get the zoom where i need it on the image and it regularly causes glitches that alter the image. and i have to zoom out and back in to move when i am zoomed in to or else the new swipe features engage. this is hard on my eyes and hard on my hands that have fucked up joints because it requires a lot more small repetitive motions to do the same thing. this change seems to be mostly conformist to be more like other sites which is disappointing for the hellsite, bit it could easily be made at least accessable if there were an option to have the double tap zoom or even if the bugs on the pinch zoom were fixed.

lastly is the swipe feature. while this is mechanically and aesthetically obnoxious to me i will hold my focus on accessability. it interacts very poorly with the zoom feature, making it hard to navigate the image viewer when zooming is needed. from a dexterity standpoint, it also makes it more difficult to see what i want to see. if my hands a shaking i will sometimes open an image and get an entirely different one because of the algorithm swipe. I've had to scroll back up to three times to get what i actually clicked on because the swipe function is so sensitive and buggy. it is also more difficult to close the image. i often have to give it multiple attempts to close the image because when i swipe down, it doesn't go away and i can't get my back button to come up without it going to a new post. the bugs should be fixed and it needs some mechanical fixes, but this should also be made optional.

tldr for @staff: the new image viewer is deeply inaccessible for visually impaired people and people with dexterity issues and the bugginess makes it so much worse. all of the new features around the image viewer should be made optional for both accessability reasons and aesthetic reasons. i understand the attempt to streamline the site to look and feel more 'modern' but please don't forget that disabled people still want to use this site

(Happy Saturday! Today's housekeeping is rather hefty, so let's get right into it.)

(I'm sick again. Yes, really. For the third time in as many months. And for unrelated reasons. This week's ailment is a perpetual, very sore throat. Not exhausting so much as very annoying so we'll see how my concentration levels hold up.

My work/life balance is getting shifted around next week. That sounds more dramatic than it actually is lol. Point is, I'll either have way more or way less free time soon. Won't know 'til it happens so we'll see how the ol' update schedule goes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tumblr is trying very hard to be pre-Musk twitter, and that's messing up the story's archives. Okay, this is the big one. So as you've probably noticed, Tumblr has been going hard on copying Twitter's layout this past year. Some of them - like adding polls - are great news for us! And then you get the changes to the app layout and the toolbar and this tumblr live shit and good lord just stop. What worries me most is the website trying very, very hard to pivot away from custom blog themes. Most links redirect to the in-dash browser, asks can no longer be sent from people who are logged out, and if you try to read a blog without an account it eventually cuts you off and tells you to sign up. For a webcomic - even a silly, informal one like 8.30 Poll - this is very bad. It's impossible to view the story chronologically when on mobile, and posts with polls in them are set in stone so I can't even manually go back and add in links to each update. If custom themes really are getting removed then these problems will extend to desktop as well. In short, I need to find a way to back up or mirror this story. We're not moving sites because we can't. There isn't another platform out there that has all the features necessary to run a story like this (besides maybe /tg/, but I'm not prepared to run this there lol). So instead I ask how I should go about backing this up. A plain .pdf with the text and images? The animations wouldn't work but it'd be easy and accessible. A HTML5 archive (similar to the Ruby Quest ones) would be more time consuming to put together and would be incompatible with screen readers, but would improve the pacing and allow for animations. Either way, we're almost at a hundred updates so if ever there were a time to start thinking about it, it's now. 'Cause the longer I wait the more of a pain it's going to be to maintain if/when tumblr shits itself.

I just saw ANOTHER post lamenting this change, so I'm just gonna say "fuck it" and make a how to do the thing post, and if I'm misunderstanding the outrage... lol, this is tumblr, I'm sure someone will tell me.

Currently, if you want to go to a post in the middle of a reblog thread, you have to click the empty space in what I call the reblog header. The reblog header is the space that holds a user's name and reblog details, and on desktop, it turns a different color when you move your cursor over it. It's this space:

It doesn't change colors on mobile, obviously, because no cursor, but I think tapping is a little more intuitive on mobile anyway and afaik this particular thing has been this way here for a while now...? Whatever. Anyway, that's how you get to a mid-thread reblog!

(I actually do kinda like this new setup. It's not perfect, it can be annoying if someone's URL is long or if I accidentally click "Follow" instead of the header space. But overall, the space to click into a prior reblog is bigger now and I like that. I don't think I'll have to worry as much about mouse precision or drowsy coordination issues, which is nice. Maybe I'll be able to use the desktop version more.)

However, this means that in order to see "prev tags," you apparently have to click into the notes view and scroll until you find them. That's annoying for those who want to see them, and I can't blame anyone for being irritated. If you're new here you may be surprised to learn "prev tags" is fairly recent, so my recommendation (if you're looking for an alternative) is to put the actual tags from the user you're reblogging from, instead. This was normal prior to the "prev tags" trend if you wanted to share tags without screenshotting them, and it seems like tumblr has made it super easy now. The mobile app now automatically suggests the previous tags, and on desktop, they show up in a dropdown when you click to tag your post. Personally, I like to put "<-borrowing your tags bc funny" or "<-stole your tags for truth" or something right after, so I don't feel like I'm taking credit for someone else's phrasing. But either way, it's handy for your followers to be able to read the tags you liked without having to click to a different blog.

I'm hoping this particular change will be seen as useful after the rocky adjustment period is over.

All this being said, I personally like these particular changes, but I wish Tumblr would not roll out changes as rapidly as they seem to be recently. Either change everything at the same time or give it a rest, holy shlamoly! I stopped using Facebook because it seemed like every time I opened it, something was different, and it became jarring and uncomfortable to try to use. I'm starting to have a similar feeling about tumblr, and I don't like it.

Seeing a bunch of shit on AI art and shit that Tumblr may or may not be planning just makes me feel so tired because only recently, like a dumbass, did I decide to make an art tag. So unless I care to endlessly scroll through YEARS of being on Tumblr, I can't exactly find all of my posts with art to watermark them. (Even if I have to download them and manually slap on my watermark.)

I know desktop Tumblr (used to or at least older/differently formatted blogs) has a button or place on your blog to see all your posts by month, but I don't think there's an equivalent on mobile.

Anyways, I'll let y'all know what alternative site I'll move my shit to, and start posts from, some other day. Today has already had me doing other Important Shit and I'm just. Emotionally and mentally exhausted.

i was wondering what you thought of tumblr's new alt text being visible on mobile? i've seen a few accessible accounts that write image descriptions just reblog images with alt text instead of copying it like they would previously.

...idk im legally blind and don't use a screenreader, i feel like i prefer having the option of alt text and image description available but i've been told it's annoying especially now that you can see the alt text on desktop and mobile :/

both alt text and descriptions in the caption should be included for max accessibility. tumblr's alt text feature is buggy at best and doesn't always show up on mobile, and even if it did, i believe image descriptions are most effective, both as accessibility tools and as educational tools, when they are as visible as possible.

a brief description in alt text (basically what you could glean at a glance) and a more detailed description in the caption is the format i typically use for my original posts.

admittedly i don't always copy and paste the description when i reblog images with alt text, because you can't do that on mobile and that's where i use tumblr the most. (but I'll always tag those posts 'id in alt text' so they can be avoided if people choose.)

Earlier I checked (just after seeing your post) and this might help you: the search bar appears on desktop but it doesn't appear on mobile (at least mine). Can other people check? Maybe there is some way to make it appear in mobile too.

I looked in my theme and there is just "show search" not anything specific for mobile.

Here's the thing though...

Almost all of the general/applicable to anyone type questions people ask... things about plot, story structure, grammar, publishing, writing process, motivation, copyright, etc. Those are all catalogued in the master list of posts that is linked at the bottom of almost every single post. It takes one second to click on it and open the master list. It takes a few more seconds to search through the topics to see where your question might fit. And a few more seconds to skim through the list to see if there's a post pertaining to your question.

It is a MUCH faster, much more reliable way to see if your question has been answered than searching for it on the site, because the site search doesn't always catch everything (or anything) anyway.

And honestly, I don't mind repeat questions that much because sometimes there's new information or I've come across a better way of explaining something, and it gets the information out to other people who wouldn't otherwise see it.

If the repetitive posts bother anyone, it's okay to just unfollow. I will understand completely. But right now I don't have the time or spoons to go research a better, more mobile friendly custom theme and do the work to get it up and running. Maybe sometime, but right now I'm dealing with some really heavy life stuff and I just can't do it.

So, for now, just please try to make use of the master list of posts and I'll do what I can to update the main site eventually. ♥ Edited to add: Oh! It looks like there actually is a search function on the mobile site. It's just at the top right corner of the screen. ♥

Oh shoot I just saw that tumblr made adding alt texts to images on mobile super easy now?! Oh fuck yeah

See, I more often than not post via mobile instead of desktop out of habit of posting to instagram first, so adding them being hella inconvenient has usually been the main reason I haven't done any (a terrible excuse, I'm aware), but I'd like to fix that going forward.

I can't promise I'll get them added to all of my past posts (bc crikey there's just so many, oof) but I'm definitely going back to add them in where I can.

hi just wanna say thank u so much for this blog. i dont even remember when i started following it, maybe a year or two or three ago? but it was the first ever like, genuine unabashed positivity account on the internet i started engaging with.

i used to loathe myself for years. i used to beat myself up for everything and criticize myself and assume everyone was holding me to this impeccable yet undefined social standard that was always barely out of reach. i used to isolate myself and avoid everything and i didn't really care for life. i thought self affirmations were stupid and self love was uncomfortable, weird, and i relied on every form of external validation to feel good about myself. i didnt think i needed friends and i did everything to avoid feeling any hurt.

i started trying out this thing of unabashed self kindness earlier this year and it's been incredibly foreign, but also i have never felt more alive since i was an actual child. and i think like, majority of the words that have kept me afloat have been from posts on this blog.

im at a point now where ive like, experienced so much joy that my brain's sort of reared its head and started beating me up again when there's a chance i'll become depressed again. which is not fun but also im really really glad i have things to lose in this world now. if that makes sense lol

Firstly, I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to see this! (I need to use tumblr desktop more, mobile always seems to hide ask notifs from me!)

I honestly can't find words to tell you how happy and honoured it makes me to know that this blog and my words have helped you in being kinder to yourself and finding more joy in the world.

Everything you said, about not believing in positivity posts and isolating yourself and holding yourself to an impossible standard also resonates so deeply with me. Those are all things I found really really difficult (and still sometimes do!) and are the reasons I started this blog in the first place! I admired the positivity community here a lot and wanted to have somewhere to keep the posts that resonated with me in one place. As a way of reminding myself that there is so much joy and beauty in the world if you look for it, but also acknowledging that that can be so difficult when you're struggling with mental illness and the fact you are trying is so, so important. This blog is here for everyone, always, but it started as a thing for myself when I was finding it hardest to find the parts I love in the world! I am so happy to hear that it's also helped to achieve the same thing for you as well. If there's one thing I want to do with my life it's to help people in ways I wish I could've been helped myself and to remind people (and myself!) that there is wonderful things here, even it's sometimes hard to see.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been finding it harder again, but I am sending you so much love and positivity and I hope you can continue to be kind and patient with yourself as you have been and know that you deserve to do the kind things that you do for yourself.
