Transformers: Mosaic - "The Oregonian"

wada sez: This is the first of three strips created by Iván Mas which were rejected by Mosaic editorial for whatever reason—in this case, because it has neither original artwork nor a comic-strip format. I’ve been a little unsure about what the hell to do with these rejected strips, because there’s no good place to put them; I’ve actually already shared one of the rejected strips as part of this archive, as part of the behind-the-scenes material for “Shogun”, which it appeared to have evolved into. The core stylistic idea behind “The Oregonian” would similarly evolve into another strip by Iván Mas, which is coming up in just a couple of days, so as a prelude to that strip I’ve decided to share the other rejected ones now. If you think this is giving Mas’ work undue precedence, all I’ll say is that TFNation this year I got talking to a chap about Mosaic and one of the first things he said was something like “I just remember those strips by those Spanish dudes. Those rocked.” So there. The idea here is pretty similar to that used in Dreamwave's first Generation 1 series, for an in-universe newspaper article; this one's set in Sunbow continuity, before the Transformers become public knowledge. The meteor which splits in two is in fact the Ark and the Nemesis, the Autobot and Decepticon spaceships locked in mutually-assured destruction. The loss of fuel at the oil rig is down to the Decepticons, as it's the one they raid in the very first episode of the cartoon. "I. Sam" is an anagram of "I. Mas", while the other namedrops are his usual collaborators: "Carlos O" being Carlos Oliveros, and "R. Yáñez" being Rafael Yáñez. I've no idea who "Philip Theblack" could be a nod to, though. See below for a preview and a machine translation of Mas being an absolutely massive diva in the deviantART description for this piece. Never change!
Tumblr media
Well, this Mosaic has been rejected for being "unclassifiable" because apparently Mosaics have not been made from photos .....
That is to say, they haven’t taken photos, they have been filtered by photoshop and have been put inside squares, apparently not .....
Sure ... according to this rule of three, this is not valid, because .... is not a comic page, of course, it can not be a splash page of an open newspaper ... with some leaked pictures ... of course....
And it is not a page with a commemorative illustration with 50 robots ....... of course.
So sorry ... I can have a mosaic about the movie, a sappy one, a black and white one, a landscape one, a couple of Japanese transformers, and some other etc. .... but not one that is a photomontage, ... because of course ... as you can see I have tried, but I have tried with a justification and a style ... obviously I refuse to take photos of the dolls in pose and filter them for obvious reasons ...
Anyway, this makes me think about finishing several mosaics, a bit "experimental", that why not?
why not ... I think they could be good ... because I say ... why limit ourselves to make a simple and plain comic page ?! why not try other things that fans can be attracted to or like even more than a simple page which we lose 2 minutes to look at ? why not push boundaries and media ? .... well ... because it is not possible, because apparently there are unwritten rules and known only by a few privileged people, that being said by the way ... could make them public to know what to expect and why not ... save us the time.
So they would be "UNCLASSIFIABLE" ... but personally I think that for a long time categories should have been established for each one to be more identifiable, so I do not see why there could not be one where it says "Unclassifiable".
So it gives me the sensation that some limitations are marked, I do not understand very well because .... I suppose that it will be the best thing.
Well in short, as they command to keep your head down, this is the result.
In any case Jana and Rafa did a good job, although perhaps there are people who do not appreciate it, I imagine why, but I prefer not to say it, congratulations and thank you!

From my Covid Journal December 19th, 2020.
So I'm lying in bed late this afternoon. The sun already down, and it looks like two in the morning. There's a knock. Finally, the cops have come to shoot me. Thought they'd never get here.
No 9mm drama. Instead, a neighbor checking to make sure I ain't dead yet. This happens. Since March nine in our building have died of the Virus. My upstairs pal concerned she hadn't seen me in days. She keeps knocking just won't leave. She really wanted me to be alive.
I opened up, and we masked, and distanced chatted for a few minutes. I told her I was having the usual times we all are. She confirmed she's got the same, and that staying sane is the secret.
We went from there. 'Said I was a favorite. She liked my stories of the times I lived through. 'Sweet kid. Thoughtful smart kind. I think I'm a grandpa figure for her. I do the best I can. Anyway, our visit got me out of bed. These days like many locked down I sleep several times in any 24-hour period. We're in this together. Be brave be kind.
Today's numbers. I'll more than understand if you stop here.
319,000+ perished since March. *(This in 2020...one million+ to this date in 2023.) 330k+ More than all U.S. combat deaths in WW2. War took near five years. COVID did it in 10 months. 11,264 persons in this republic who were alive on this day a week ago are now perished. 20k+ a week infected, and now over 3000+ die every day.
This despite the slow drip of Vaccine slipping through. CDC sez expect those numbers to be sustained for the next 60 to 90 days. We are in a major War yet near half the population still call it a hoax. Such times. Still, look in on folks you ain't seen. Call them zoom them text email heliograph telegraph bang on the wall or call to their window from the street. Like me they'll appreciate the effort.

An excerpt where Hoelun does some math:
"Dipshit Father taught me much about Power and the quest for it. It ended with almost dying of fever tied to a grate after Master Katara, world's greatest Waterbender, defeated me in a fairly won Agni Kai. Power always has limits. There is always someone greater."
The Firebender snarled and moved as she began to form a fire-whip and instead of firing at her, he laughed with a cold snarl and fired at Hoelun as Azula snapped away her fire-whip and dispelled the flame.
Hoelun sighed then and let herself call upon her own fires, moving from the front door of the building to rise to the same height Azula had, her immobile arm extending outward and her right crossed in front of her as she moved her hands and then shot a fireball back straight at the face of the person who'd fired at her and stared at her in disbelief, Hoelun's grin savage.
"I'm no whore. I didn't survive the worst battles of the last phase of Ozai's war because I am weak."
He dodged her fire blast and she cursed at the sight only to see Azula re-form her fire whips and grab the man by the waist, picking him up and slamming him down, one of his limbs audibly cracking, though all he made was a dazed "Flmnash' before collapsing.
The remaining two looked at Hoelun in dismay, and Azula as well.
"Yes, I know," Hoelun called, her voice loud and domineering.
"Ten of you and two of us. Shame you were outnumbered so much, isn't it?"

Hey! Album: 'Fleetwood Mac' (1975) - Fleetwood Mac
Hey! Great to hear from you! You (and your previous blog) were my original inspiration for trying to raise my tumblr game to something intentionally curated, and more than that, personally creative. Sorry to have let you down. LOL
What a pleasure to talk about this one, though, an album I think is -- strangely enough -- one of the most underrated albums in the classic rock pantheon!
What’s that you say? An album with “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” underrated?!?! Well it’s true, seriously underrated, at least partly because those two stellar, nay, legendary songs are the first ones that most people think of. There's so much more! It's definitely my favorite Fleetwood Mac album!
My perspective is a little different than the standard rap that Fleetwood Mac didn't properly begin until those two California kids joined the band in 1975, because to me, they started taking off when their first American joined the band, Bob Welch in 1971 for Future Games, which I wrote about at some length here.
(For the record, Future Games is my second favorite Fleetwood Mac album. Anyone who hasn't checked it out really needs to.)
I’ll leave it at that for now, except to observe that to most of my music nerd friends at the time, I was a latecomer to Fleetwood Mac the band, having completely missed their earlier, bluesier lineups. Indeed, the 1971 lineup was their 8th! And they'd come to #9 in 1972, before landing on lineup #10 in 1975.
They had a bunch of hits on the five albums in this 71-74 range (”Hypnotized” is one that still slays me) that I think hold up as among their best ever. While the album before Fleetwood Mac, Heroes Are Hard to Find didn’t have a hit single, it rose to #34 on the US charts, and got plenty of attention.
My point is that Fleetwood Mac didn’t spring into existence out of nowhere in 1975. Nor was 1975 necessarily ground zero for the millions of people who bought the album Fleetwood Mac. It came out in the summer of ‘75, but took 15 months to hit #1 in the US! (It peaked at #11 in the UK.) This was a far bigger album in 1976 when all the singles came out, and the band was touring like crazy to support it.
They basically dragged the album to the top of the charts kicking and screaming by the end of THAT year with relentless touring, setting the stage for their true commercial breakthrough with Rumours in 1977, but artistically? I prefer everything about 1975′s Fleetwood Mac.
btw, the music nerds know that Fleetwood Mac was recorded at Sound City Studios, which makes all the difference in the telling of the tale. In 1974, the band had located to Los Angeles, and following the departure of Bob Welch in December, Mick Fleetwood went looking for both a recording studio and a guitarist.
While getting to know producer Keith Olsen at Sound City (a studio legendary for its drum sound, among other things), Keith played Mick some tracks from an album he’d recorded here a couple of years earlier with a local guitarist and his girlfriend singer, both of whom were also songwriters.
Mick said, I’ll book the studio to record my next album, I’ll book you to produce, and I’ll hire the guitarist....who famously informed Mick that he and his girlfriend were a package deal. All of this happened because of Sound City Studios.
(Here's Mick recording this very album in this very studio.)
Tumblr media
Your friend and mine Dave Grohl directed a FANTASTIC documentary about Sound City Studios, a kind of a dump to be honest, but where tons of phenomenal records were made, from After The Gold Rush to Caribou, Damn The Torpedoes, Nevermind, Rage Against The Machine, and most recently, Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher. Lots and lots of stories about the making of Fleetwood Mac in this movie, and much more.
Here’s the trailer. The whole movie is available on YT, too! And Amazon Prime, and a bunch of other places. HIGHLY recommended!
youtube
So here we go taking directly about Fleetwood Mac.....
the first song from the album i heard: "Over My Head". This was the first single released in the US, remarkably, four months after the album was released! I dunno, did the label not want to sell any albums? Or did they just not get how catchy these tunes were? I have no idea.
And ironically, the band didn't like the choice of "Over My Head" at all, ranking it dead-last in their own considerations of likely singles! I think that this is evidence that they were using heavy drugs much earlier than we thought. LOL
"Over My Head" peaked at #20 in the US, their highest to date by far, although, in some defense of the band's reservations, didn't chart at all in the UK. Saying that it rose to "only" 20 in the charts doesn't begin to describe how heavily it was played, though. A LOT.
do i own the album: Did then, Spotify now. The answer for most of the albums in this round of Asks. :-)
my favorite song: "Over My Head". Look, I admit that this is insane when Fleetwood Mac also includes "Landslide" and "Rhiannon." "Landslide" in particular is maybe one of the greatest songs anyone has ever written, and every single person reading this knows somebody named Rhiannon because of that song. (I've met two.) And hey, "Say You Love Me" was a MUCH bigger hit at the time too... but I'm tellin' ya, "Over My Head" fucks.
It's the single version that fucks hardest, though, no doubt about it. I was disappointed when I finally bought the album that the version there fades in (NO! THIS IS WRONG) and has a wide mix that diffuses the impact. The radio version is so tight that it's practically mono, and it punches you right upside the head.
One of my favorite things about listening to "Over My Head" in the past couple of weeks for this Ask is that it's Old School Fleetwood Mac. Chris on piano, Mick on drums, and John McVie with what might be the best bassline that anyone stroked out in 1975. My god, it's a fucking monster, and it just gets hotter as the song progresses. By the end, it's on fire, and you hear it so much better in this tight single mix.
The new guy adds a nice little solo on top of a nice rhythm lick, and he and Stevie add background vocals, but they're not front and center. "Over My Head" is really Christine McVie's showcase, although Fleetwood and Mac really shine too. This would have been a monster hit without the new kids, as indeed it pretty much was. You could say the same thing about "Say You Love Me", which is also all about Christine's songcraft, and a voice like no other, then or now.
Here's my edit of a lovely Mick Putland photo of Christine McVie from a couple of years earlier.
Tumblr media
I guarantee that it's been way too long since you heard the in-your-face single version of "Over My Head". On Spotify, you can find it on the couple of Deluxe Editions of Fleetwood Mac (here's one), and it's also on the anthology, The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac, which I've embedded here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw-lIt1ILzk
youtube
least favorite song: "I'm So Afraid." I'm so afraid not. LOL
a song I didn’t like at first, but now do: Hmm, I might put "Sugar Daddy" in that category, but honestly, the main thing I don't like about this song is the title. LOL But it's the 4th best Christine McVie song on an album where the best three of hers were all released as singles, so I guess it all works out.
a song I used to like, but now don’t: Anything by the new guy. I'm not going to go into detail here because what I love about this album, I still love. At the time, I dug two of his songs here (you can guess which two, surely), but I started to really despise this guy a few years later. Now, I can't listen to anything where he's prominent at all, on any Fleetwood Mac records.
Fortunately there are more than enough Christine and Stevie songs, and Mick and John's playing, plus all those earlier albums like Future Games, to keep Fleetwood Mac in the rock good pantheon. I'd have fired the new guy 30 years earlier than he was.
favorite lyric:
Mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Like I said, the two Stevie Nicks tracks on Fleetwood Mac deserve every bit of the love they've gotten over the years. You can also see with just a quick glance around my blog that she's one of my most-posted artists. Please don't take me repping Christine as any disrespect for Stevie!
Do I like "Landslide" a little more than I otherwise might because it's specifically about outgrowing the aforementioned new guy? Maybe.  Or do I like it a little less than I otherwise might because I can't hear it without thinking of him? Maybe that too.
overall rating out of 10: Then: 9.4. Now: 9. The new guy went 2-for-4 for my money at the time, and the two that he whiffed on are genuinely terrible...but as bad as those two clunkers were, the rest of the album seemed perfect to me. Certainly among my most-played mainstream rock records into the early 80s. I was perfectly fine skipping one song on each side.
Even though nowadays I can't stand any of the songs he sings lead on, you take those off, and you STILL have "Landslide", "Rhiannon", "Say You Love Me", "Over My Head", and "Warm Ways". No album with ALL THOSE on them gets less than an 8.5, right?
I'm adding a few tenths each for how tightly Fleetwood and Mac are locked into each other and these songs on rythm (easily the most underrated duo of the era, sez me), and Keith Olsen's immaculate production. The score of 9 is therefore objectively correct and mathematically unassailable. LOL
I'm going to end where I began, by talking about Christine McVie. Instead of listening to this first and foremost as an album with a couple of giant Stevie Nicks songs, listen again to Fleetwood Mac as Christine McVie really lighting things up. She deserves so much more credit for the band's success than she gets, and seriously, "Over My Head" fucks.
Now looky here, @aluacrescente . I know that YOU have strong feelings about this record, so spill! And the rest of you, too! I don't intend to have the last word on the albums in any of these Asks! Just the first one. :-) So lemme know what YOU think!
PS. Apologies for any formatting weirdness! I started this on desktop, where I do all my writing, saved the first few paragraphs to come back to later, only to be told by tumblr that I'd stated this on the app (DID NOT) and could only edit there. Grrr. Not cool, @staff. I've spent another day just tweaking to make it somewhat readable and wondering how these people can be so bad at their jobs. LOL
My crackpot opinions and wobbly writing are my own of course, and I'm aware that they have a larger negative impact on readability than tumblr's incompetence by far. LOL

Transformers: Mosaic #246 - "Can It Get Any Worse?"

wada sez: A little look at Wasp’s inner life. Wasp was a foil to Bumblebee, based on (and ultimately being mutated into) Waspinator, introduced in “Autoboot Camp”, which this strip is a prequel to. Wasp’s eyes are seen slowly morphing from their original Autobot blue to his trademark purple. The blue robot looks like an Animated version of Glyph, predating her official design by Brianne Drouhard. See below the break for Collins’ original script.
TRANSFORMERS: MOSAIC ANIMATED< "CAN IT GET ANY WORSE?" Featuring: WASP (Secondaries: Glyph, Ironhide, Beachcomber, Bumper, Bumblebee, Sentinel Minor (LOL), Cliffjumper, Longarm (shadow)...all secondaries are silent parts and for the most part are small background characters) Writer/Lineartist/Colorist: Sarabeth Collins (bloodandsteel) (I know, I'm just asking to glitch LOL) Summary: WASP learns the hard way that even though you work hard and strive for perfection, you don't always come out on top... ----------------- PANEL 1 [All we see is Wasp sitting on the floor rocking back and forth alone in his cell. At this time, his optics are not as purple as seen in "Autoboot Camp" but are not quite blue anymore. He cell is dimly lit by the force-field bars...] WASP: (mumbling to himself) Wasp not know what went wrong. Wasp was doing good. Wasp was praised. Wasp followed the rules... WASP: [thoughts narrative] Why have things always been so hard for me? PANEL 2 [We see Wasp as he was many many stellar cycles ago working in a warehouse with Beachcomber and Bumper in the background. He's struggling to carry a heavy load around (moving toward "camera").] WASP: [thoughts narrative] I've always had to work hard to get what I had. I never backed down from a challenge... [half-panel, Wasp is being helped up by Bumper while Beachcomber picks up the part he had dropped.] WASP: [thoughts narrative] No matter how often I failed... PANEL 3 [Wasp and Glyph are studying for what we can assume are Autobot Academy entrance exams. Wasp looks incredibly frustrated while Glyph seems to try to calm him down.] WASP: [thoughts narrative] It always seemed like I just wasn't good enough. I had to be faster,  smarter than everyone else to get by. Being so small didn't help, but I had friends... WASP: [thoughts narrative] Even if I wasn't always easy to get along with. PANEL 4 [We see Wasp as he was at boot camp with Ironhide and Bumblebee. Bumblebee is looking at Wasp warily as he and Ironhide walk by him.] WASP: [thoughts narrative] I managed. I wanted to be an officer with the Elite guard. I'd worked so hard to get there. I felt like my luck had changed. My talents were appreciated by the higher-ups... WASP: [thoughts narrative] ...But it seems like something always goes wrong. PANEL 5 [Wasp is being arrested by Sentinel Minor (LOL) and Cliffjumper. Panel split in three smaller segments. First, Wasp is protesting as he's taken away. Second, close up on Bee's face. Third, close up as Wasp sneers at Bee.] WASP: You can't do this to me! I was framed! WASP: [thoughts narrative, second panel segment] I was framed... WASP: [thoughts narrative, third panel segment] I'll never forgive you, Bumblebee...NEVER! PANEL 6 [Back in his cell, just before his "escape", someone is approaching from down the hall, barely seen in the shadows. It's Longarm/Shockwave.] WASP: [thoughts narrative] Never forgive... WASP: Never forgive....Bumble....bot.... PANEL 7 [Close-up on Wasp's surprised face (looking up, one eye wider than the other), overshadowed by what appears to be Shockwave's silhouette, a red glow from his one eye shining off of Wasp's head and Wasp's eyes are a darker purple than before.] WASP: [thoughts narrative] It's been rough, locked away here all alone. I think I'm going mad. Everything I worked for, gone... WASP: [thoughts narrative] Can it get any worse? SHOCKWAVE: I have a proposition for you...One that I'm certain you'll very much enjoy. WASP: Wasp is...listening... To Be Continued...(in the episode "Autoboot Camp")

“OH MY GOD YOU SICK BASTARD”
topper threw tyrone to the ground and ran out of the room
leaving half naked rafe
“you owe me a new duck fuckface”

*(FB memory from 2020. We were all locked down. I've included the comment thread. I love it because it shows the kindly aura of the folks on the page...loves ya.)
Once upon a time.
Okay this evening I'm experimenting. I'm trying those pre-steamed vacuum-packed things. Sort of civilian MRE's. Yeah, I know, but wait. I did the rice the other day and didn't become an accordion player...too bad always wanted to try that.
Anyway, it's easy, and I'm sparky from my meds. So I'm doing Indian Madras lentils...so they say. My Giger counter is in the shop, so I'll take a risk. Covid makes me brave. I'll toss in stuff hanging around. 'Let ya know.
Elizabeth Rothman: I eat this regularly and have enjoyed them.
Harmony Pax: Tasty Bite is one of the most common products in institutional settings.
Matisse Enzer: I've eaten plenty of Tasty Bite. Good stuff generally.
Adrienne Mcdonald: Yea, give it a try.
David Finton: I eat a lot of those Indian pouch sauces over rice. Tasty Bite tends to be a bit pricy; Faziani tastes good and is less expensive.
Charles Vizzini: Those r really good. Also try 'Birds Eye Veggie Pasta'.
Natasha Smith: Those are cool. Basically, boil in bag.
Sidney Smith: Which is perfect. I try to keep things simple!
Natasha Smith: Canned food in a bag. I like the spinach and cheese curd ones. Recently known as MRE's.
Robin Kalmikoff Elkman: These are delicious; the only problem is they’re very high in sodium.
Sharon Griffiths: I am not a big fan of processed food - but then, I am a diva and WILL NOT COOK if the temperature is over 70 degrees. Some processed food is better than others. Just look carefully at the ingredients and try not to eat stuff with more than 10 things, stuff that has the bad s**t (salt, sugar, fat) at the front of the list, or stuff that contains things you cannot pronounce (also, remember to wear/bring your reading glasses - the size of the lettering is usually minuscule).
Eric Rohver: Basmati rice that also comes in an urban MRE.
Harmony Pax: Yeah, Uncle Bens by Walmart.
Max Schmid: I ate some 3–4-year-old bags of some of these Indian meals - they hold up pretty well!
Habte Selassie: Always have ginger ready to make a fresh hot cup. Also, add some white wine to your next batch of lentils. You said experimenting.
Jeffrey Sandor: We love these lentils... and Indian dal...
Cassady Smith: I think those Indian cuisine pouches are good! Full of flavor. They’re great for me because they’re tiny and my doctor, bizarrely, wants me to lose weight. Currently researching new doctors.
*(Like I sez...loves you folks.)

"Kill, Marry, Screw"
Proposed: We love to look at people whose looks change from day to day, even minute to minute. People like Sam Heughan who never looks less than very very good, but some looks are better than others. The hair stylists nearly ruined him in “A. Malcolm,” sez me. The scenes in bed, not the ineffable walk down the Royal Mile at the beginning of the ep. Those hangdog locks that obscure the shape of his face in bed, not good. Good for Men in Kilts, and/or for Sam himself, for finding a good hair person. Best look at a panel: the ponytail for the one where Cait plays “Kill, Marry, Screw.” You think?

fire escape
For @whumptober2020 day 14: Is Something Burning? (specifically "fire”)
Continues on from day four, wherein Aziraphale met up with a distraught coworker, waited for Crawly at the base of the Tower of Babel, and then it fell on him, day five, wherein Aziraphale did his best to help the citizens of Babylon, and was caught by demons for his trouble, day eight, wherein Aziraphale found brief and unexpected camaraderie among the prisoners of Hell, day eleven, wherein Hell tried to make a deal with Aziraphale, and day twelve, wherein Crawly finally stops by, and doesn’t help.
Background Aziraphale/f!Crawly -- though this one is, once more, mostly Aziraphale dealing with an OC demon.  Content warning for body horror, specifically burning alive.
Aziraphale sat stewing in his own worries in the cell for a long while.  Around him, the business of Hell seemed to be resuming again, slowly and agonizingly, as more and more demons were able to communicate with each other.  It wasn't really an improvement in the demons' overall level of misery, Aziraphale thought, and he remembered those glum faces when the demons had been retrieved, one by one, from the cell, which seemed like it had been ages ago.  He'd felt sorry for them at the time, but now he reminded himself that they probably deserved it, having rebelled against God and all that.
When his next visitor came for him, it was nobody Aziraphale recognized.  The demon was huge, several feet taller than Aziraphale, with cruel claws on his hands and feet and scales peppering his skin.  He opened the cell door and grunted at Aziraphale, and motioned for him to come forward.
The demon stank horribly, which Aziraphale was not prepared for; nor had he expected to be grabbed by his wrist and dragged bodily along, but that was what the demon did.
"Where are you taking me?" Aziraphale asked, trying very hard to keep up with the demon, so as not to find himself dragging along the floor of Hell.
The demon grunted, and turned back to him to say something -- something Aziraphale couldn't comprehend, of course.  He suspected it meant "Shut up."
"Did Crawly send you?" he asked, and immediately regretted it, because the demon stopped for a moment, and looked back at him.
So he didn't ask anything else, and instead frantically tried to follow along without having his arm dragged out of his socket.  Finally, the demon came to a room with a metal door.  The door was glowing red, which was a very bad sign, and the demon grumbled to himself as he grabbed what appeared to be an oversized leather glove sort of thing.  Aziraphale watched as the demon struggled to put it on.  He ought to run, he thought.  He ought to flee while the demon was preoccupied, and hide among the tunnels of Hell and try to find his way out.  But he couldn't imagine that going well at all, so instead he stood there like an idiot while the demon put the glove on, opened the glowing door carefully, and pushed Aziraphale inside.
The room was not merely on fire; it was full of fire.  Maybe normally it was an oven, or a storage room for... extra fire?  But Aziraphale knew that today it was an incinerator for angels, and that this was it.  It had been a good run, he supposed; a thousand years and change.  Hard to ask for more than that.  Hard to ask for anything, really, when you were on fire, which Aziraphale would be soon, because the flames were closing in on him.  It was already much too hot, and he yelped as the flames licked his feet, and then in one horrible moment, he was engulfed entirely in flames.  He could feel his skin roasting and curling off as it charred, bits of what was inside starting to liquefy and drip into the flames, where they hissed and sputtered.  The pain was enormous.  Aziraphale fell to his knees, or what was left of his knees, unable to see, unable even to scream.  The last coherent thought he had before giving up entirely was the realization that his lovely golden ring was melting, and the very silly realization that his clothes would be ruined.
And then the flames died down, and Aziraphale, blinking, looked down at himself.  He was fine.  Even his ring was fine!  Of course, Aziraphale thought.  Of course, how could I have doubted God, whose might is greater even than the flames of Hell?
The door opened, and Aziraphale prepared himself for the horror of the demon, surely expecting to see only a heap of charred matter.  But the demon mostly looked annoyed as he reached in and pulled Aziraphale out.  "What, you want to stay in there longer?" he demanded.
"N-no, only -- I thought -- I thought that -- why can I understand you?" he demanded.
The demon looked at Aziraphale, and then at the glowing red door, and then back to Aziraphale.  "What is this, a joke?"
"No!  I don't know what's happening!"
The demon grabbed him by the wrist again and started dragging him back the way they'd come, and Aziraphale had to hurry to keep up again, while the demon plodded along.  "Don't know?  But you knew Crawly had you prioritized!"
"What?" Aziraphale asked.
"Yeah, I've only got about a million more demons to go but apparently Crawly sez you're more important than them," said the demon, irritably.  "Got to negotiate with the boss, she sez.  It's important these new angels get on board fast, for morale, she tells me.  I dunno what morale is but I never had any of it and I don't want any of it, and maybe you should have got in on the ground floor like the rest of us, instead of expectin’ special treatment now."  They were back at the cell now, and the demon pulled open the cell and shoved Aziraphale inside.  "Well, you can have your morale, fancy angel," he snarled.  "I did my job, and Crawly better pay up."
He locked the door again, and then looked at Aziraphale in the cell.  His smile was surprisingly gummy as something occurred to him.  "If you didn't know that was what I was here for -- what must you have thought was gonna happen?"  Then he laughed to himself, and plodded away.
Why had Crawly subjected him to this?  To negotiate with Satan, as the demon had told him?  That seemed unlikely to be useful to Aziraphale, but reassuringly, it seemed equally likely to be unhelpful to Crawly, so he couldn't see why she would want him to do it.  He was going to demand a full explanation from her, when she returned.  If she ever returned.
Not that he wanted her to return, obviously, because he was very cross with her.
But an explanation would have been nice.
