Dark Horse and Lucasfilm Publishing Announce New "Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories" Line
Tumblr media
Dark Horse and Lucasfilm Publishing's Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories graphic novels line will showcase iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise from different authors and artists. The line-up includes Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, Rey, General Grievous, Kylo Ren, and Darth Vader. Some of the creatives on the line include writers George Mann, Cecil Castellucci, Justina Ireland, and Michael Moreci, and artists/colorists/letterers Andrea Mutti, Lucas Marangon, Michael Atiyeh, Nick Brokenshire, Gigi Baldassini, and more. Covers for the Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories line are by Michael Cho.
The Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories line kicks off with Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories: Qui-Gon Jinn from George Mann, Andrea Mutti, and Gigi Baldassini. According to Mann, the graphic novel will focus on three pivotal moments of Qui-Gon Jinn's life - "venturing to the streets of Jedha as a Padawan, to the distant world of Cerosha as a lonesome Jedi Knight, and deep into the wreck of an ancient spaceship as a Jedi Master." (Dark Horse)
Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories: Qui-Gon Jinn goes on sale in bookstores on April 23, 2024, and in comic shops on April 24, 2024.

January 1984. I've always been amazed that Jo Duffy got away with this gag in STAR WARS #79: On the planet Arcan IV, Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca are led astray, literally, by a weary practitioner of the world's oldest profession who has an understandable grudge against the space pirates who've been driving away all her clientele, and who reasonably assumes that Lando — who is disguised as a space pirate — is one of them. (Lando's disguise in this issue is in fact a color-swapped version of the outfit worn by the titular protagonist of Leiji Matsumoto's manga SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK.)
The rest of the plot of this story, aptly entitled "The Big Con," is just as silly: Lando and Chewbacca attempt (unsuccessfully) to recruit a pirate gang to help them rescue Han Solo (still frozen in carbonite, as this story takes place prior to RETURN OF THE JEDI) by claiming that Han is "an absolute genius at locating lost artifacts" and can help the gang get their hands on a couple of extremely valuable statues they're after — and which we eventually learn Lando has actually had the whole time.
In this story, as in a number of Duffy's STAR WARS adventures, Lando uses the alias "Captain Drebble," which is the name of an old enemy of Lando's (first seen in issue #71). As Lando explains to Chewbacca, "With a little luck, maybe one day some of the people I've conned will decide to look him up. I know it's a slim chance, but the possibilities keep me entertained." In later issues, this trick eventually backfires on Lando, with amusing results.

Eventually you get so deep into Star Wars that you start learning the names of differing Lucasfilm branches. I’m not just talking about Lucasfilm Games, or Skywalker Sound. Y’all ever heard of Bantha Music?

“And after the acting clinic Oscar Isaac put on in Marvel’s Moon Knight series, Lucasfilm may be kicking itself for not utilizing him for more Poe.”
Damn, that last line was ICE COLD 🤣😂👍🏼
(I don’t mean to hate on the Sequel Trilogy but enough time has passed, and I do think that though all three leads - Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn, and Oscar Isaac’s Poe - had compelling stories told, all three movies as a collective whole should have gotten a better treatment. But it is what it is, and Oscar Isaac loved his character’s comic book adaptation better than he loved Poe’s story in the films, so there’s that 😅)

Hello Mr. Gaiman,
I know you are not a copyright lawyer, but you are an author who has been producing and interacting with copyrighted works for longer than I've been alive, so I thought I'd just ask: Where is the line between making a pop culture reference in a work and infringing on copyright?
I sincerely struggle to believe that every mention of characters like Yoda, Wonder Woman, or the Doctor in books, movies, songs, etc. gets approved by Lucasfilm, DC Comics, or the BBC before going out in the world, but am I wrong? Does having a character in a novel or comic book dress up as, say, Coraline for Halloween require coordination with you (and possibly Laika as well)?
While it's a long shot, I thought I'd ask you, in case you see this and have an answer.
Thank you for your time,
Brian
I can give you the same answer that a copyright lawyer would. At least at the beginning. "It's complicated, and it all depends," is how it would begin.
After that it moves into specifics. In the last season of Good Omens, for example, I got permission from Iain Banks's widow to have The Crow Road front and centre and to see the first sentence on screen. On the other hand I didn't get specific permission to talk about Doctor Who (or invent the 1964 Doctor Who Annual). (On the other other hand I knew nobody was going to complain about that because the BBC were the production studio making Good Omens and if they had wanted to grumble they would have let me know early.) We got permission from the Buddy Holly estate/music publishers to use Buddy Holly's song Everyday, but we didn't seek or get permission to use the song in the plot.
Fair use exists, transformational use of copyrighted material exists, and parody exists, and all of these things mean that if you're watching a Halloween episode of something where the kids are dressed as Coraline, Freddy Krueger, the Scream killer, and Pinhead, permission might have been granted or it might not have been requested.

Is George McFly’s son ok? I just went to one of his book signings and his son was double taking every time he saw the line. Does he not know who his dad is?

Apparently renowned Sci-fi author George McFly, is suing Lucasfilms for use of the name Darth Vader in the Star Wars trilogy (1977-1981). The author first coined the name in his first book Warnings from the Stars, published 1975.
