Jazz on a Friday afternoon with the James Waugh Collection
Tumblr media
This month we were privileged to have a visit from a family who donated one of our more unusual, and certainly one of our coolest, collections.
The James Waugh record collection comprises over 2,300 vinyl records of Jazz music, collated during the career of James (‘Jim’) Waugh presenter of ‘Nighthawk’ late night Jazz show on Radio Clyde in the 1980s. The extensive collection is an excellent representation of Jazz movements, styles, decades, and artists and includes some very rare records too. Find out a little more about the collection itself and collector James Waugh from our previous blog-post.
We were delighted when daughter of James Waugh, Katie, got in touch with us to arrange a visit when her family reunited in Glasgow this summer (for the graduation of sister Helen). Katie along with her Mum Genevieve (who generously gifted the collection to us in 1998), sister Helen, nephew Thomas, partner Phil and 5-month-old son William came to visit one Friday morning to see and listen to the collection and to remember and reminisce about James Waugh and his prolific activity in the Scottish art and media scene.
Baby William is named for his grandfather who was officially called William James Barrie Robb Waugh and it was particularly fitting to see baby William drift off into a relaxed and mellow mood (was that some little toes tapping?) to the sounds of Thelonius Monk, Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis & co.
The Archives and Special Collections team found out fascinating stories about some of the records, including Tommy Smith’s ‘Giant Strides’. Genevieve and Jim were responsible for the cover art for this record which turns out to be a long exposure photograph of a bridge over the M8 in Glasgow! Genevieve explained that what looks like the blurred keys and body of a saxophone caught in motion are actually the lights over the motorway which can be made out when the image is turned 90 degrees to the right.
Tumblr media
Particularly poignant sounds of the day were "Song for My Father" by the Horace Silver Quintet and Weather Report's "Birdland" which Genevieve had made special request to hear played once more on Jim's own vinyl.
Katie let us know how what spending the morning with the collection meant to her: “This was such a special visit for me. My father died when I was just 11 so I have very limited memories of him... to be able to listen to and touch some of his records made me feel that much closer to his memory. I'm so glad that over 20 years later people are still enjoying his collection.”

The archives team greatly enjoyed the visit too. It was fantastic to meet with the family who donated this fascinating collection and to find out a bit more about the man behind the discs, who was also something of a gifted musician himself. What could be better, on a Friday morning, than some great Jazz and lovely company, including a most adorable baby?

Read an exclusive excerpt of "Chapter 5: The Mysterious Cal and Lily" from Tangled Vines: A Complete Investigation of the Vatore Disappearances, the bestselling phenomenon sweeping Sim Nation!
The advent of the Roaring '20s put a new city on the map. Prohibition was in full swing across the nation (though often loosely and selectively enforced), but citizens were more eager than ever to revel in excess. Producers of alcoholic beverages (including the Vatore family itself, having swiftly resumed business operations despite the loss of its future inheritors) transitioned to an outward emphasis on medical spirits while moving recreational production underground. Equally clandestine speakeasys began cropping up by the dozens, but one city's winding sidewalks, grimy storefronts, and labyrinthine system of underground tunnels made it particularly well-suited to hosting these secret locales. Soon enough, San Myshuno was the pinnacle of glitz, glamor, and elegant debauchery. All who attended a party wanted to be seen. Curiously, though, two of the names most often uncovered in tabloid archives, Cal and Lily, seemed to fully avoid the increasingly ubiquitous flash of the camera. While other frequenters of the speakeasy circuit often found their grainy black and white faces in print, providing endless fodder for the burgeoning gossip rag industry, this pair remained elusive, which of course sold even more papers. Fellow partygoers pitched first-hand accounts to the highest bidders, and readers clung onto every salacious word. Lily and Cal were always observed to arrive together, but she would soon make a beeline for the gramophone while he settled in at the bar. Nearly every report calls Lily an exquisite beauty with an almost supernatural ability for drawing men into her orbit. In some instances, partygoers describe a herd of suitors nearly erupting into fisticuffs as they competed for her attention. It is impossible to say how many of these accounts are exaggerated or even fabricated. Nevertheless, it is clear she was quite the force. At the end of the night, she would leave with her chosen companion, stupefied by his stroke of good luck, on her arm. Meanwhile, Cal would watch listlessly from a distance, nursing a glass of whiskey he was never observed to actually drink. The relationship between the two was unclear, as was his reason for accompanying her, as he seemed to have little interest in the raucousness surrounding him. He rarely engaged with other guests or even Lily herself, though there is at least one report of an argument in which he seemed with little success to be dissuading her from leaving with yet another man. One cannot help but draw parallels to a certain set of siblings with suspiciously similar names. Despite being younger, Caleb Vatore was always said to be protective over his sister Lilith's interests, even if she rarely heeded his advice. Digging into the newspaper archives at Myshuno Meadows Library unearths several more disturbing accounts. Increasingly, there were whispers that the men Lily seduced completely vanished from San Myshuno society after coming into contact with her. While there was a small spike in unsolved murder cases at the time, a concrete connection between the victims and the mysterious Lily cannot be made. In one story, which admittedly reads like a hallucinatory drug trip, Lily is described as a succubus with glowing red eyes and sharp blood-stained teeth. This account was clearly dismissed, for its revelations were never entertained further. All at once, the champagne and glitter dissolved into a more sober era, and these socialites vanished from public life just as swiftly. In isolation, similarities between Cal and Lily and the disappeared Vatore siblings may seem like mere coincidences. In truth, it cannot even be proven that they existed. No official records matching either individual have been discovered. One could argue that they were works of fiction concocted to boost sales or composites drawn from several individuals. However, considered alongside the evidence to be presented in later chapters, the theory that this duo and the Vatores are one and the same becomes too tantalizingly probable to dismiss.

You’re reading History? A perfectly respectable school. The very worst is English literature and the next worse is Modern Greats. You want either a first or a fourth. […] Time spent on a good second is time thrown away. You should go to the best lectures […] irrespective of whether they are in your school or not…Clothes. Dress as you do in a country house. Never wear a tweed coat and flannel trousers—always a suit. […] Clubs. Join the Carlton and the Grid at the beginning of your second year. If you want to run for the Union—and it’s not a bad thing to do—make your reputation outside first, at the Canning or the Chatham […]. Don’t treat dons like schoolmasters; treat them as you would the vicar at home… You’ll find you spend half your second year shaking off the undesirable friends you made in your first. … Beware of the Anglo-Catholics - they’re all sodomites with unpleasant accents. In fact, steer clear of all the religious groups.

Bright Young Things

Bright Young Things    [trailer]
A look into the lives of a young novelist, his would-be lover, and a host of young people who beautified London in the 1930s.
Hedonistic decadence all around, but not in a particular entertaining way. Maybe with the exception of James McAvoy's character it's hard to get interested. So it's difficult to care when things start to get more serious later.
The naiveté of the lead character doesn't help. It's hard to understand why he was in the company of the other people.

I’ve watched “Bright Young Things”. I believe you sure know why I did it – because there are young Michael Sheen and David Tennant in this movie. However, never in one shot, but still – two for one. Also, on the side note – I haven’t read the book, so I can’t say anything about it. I’ve never noticed, Michael Sheen has such a lovely nose! Maybe it’s makeup, but still. Also, I have never imagined, that young James McAvoy is so cute – it just never occurred to me. Also, third time – British accent, of my Lord, it’s so good. The film doesn’t have an actual plot it just shows episodes of the life of a group of friends and acquaintances, in London in the thirties of the previous century. They have their problems (mostly with money), their pleasures – they have way too many parties. The reporters follow them all the time because their readers are hungry for scandals. The main character is a writer, who wants to marry his beloved - Nina, but he has no money, so the whole movie he tries to get some and the situation changes several times throughout the film. David Tennant plays a stinking rich (is this even a thing, or just a quote from “Jekyll and Hyde”?) guy, Nina’s childhood friend, who (Spoilers!) marries her for some time, but at the very end leaves. He has funny moustaches. Michael Sheen plays a guy from the friend group. He’s gay, absolutely fabulous, but has to leave for France because one of his lovers left his letters and the police found out. Two more things: It’s so funny how all the elder mistaken cocaine for something else.
Manuscripts don't burn.

VERY LONG POST THAT IS A CONNECTION BETWEEN MANY THINGS!
right, good omens stars michael sheen and david tennant. amazing, incredible. trivia: they were in the movies bright young things together in 2003 (dir. stephen fry) as well as james mcavoy and bill paterson.
As a furtherconnection(s), good omens has A nightingale sang in brekely square, sung by tori amos (who sang the song Graveyard, which nail gaiman used in the graveyard book).
A nightingale sang in berkely square is also the lyric to the song bright young things, which stephgen fry had the pet shop boys sing for the movie, although it ended up being left out.
neil tennant, singer for the pet shop boys, is actually where david tennant got his name, since david mcdonald was already taken in the guild of actors he wanted to join.
right so the book was based off the novel vile bodies, by evelyn waugh. michael sheens character, miles maitland(malpractice in the book), was based off of real life bright young person, stephen tennant. wow! another tennant!
stephen tennant had brothers, one of which was named david tennant, who we will call david pax tennant to avoid confusion. Right, so david pax tennant had four/five children(this is the inconsistency i was talking about) two of which were named david and georgia tennant.
actor david tennants wife is named georgia tennant. In addition, they met on doctor who, where she played his daughter. spooky, i know.
back to the book, evelyn waught also wrote a book called decline and fall, the movie of which had jack whitehall(who plays newton pulsifer).
david tennant and james mcavoy are both marvel, remember that. adria arjona(anathema device in good omens) is also marvel.
david arnold, who did the good omens soundtrack, also did the sherlock(bbc tv series) soundtrack. this of course stars bandersnatch custardwheel, and martin freeman.
bubblebath copperwire was ALSO in episode six of good omens, as satan. and then of course, both him and martin freeman are marvel, as well as tobey jones, a guest star in sherlock.
james mcavoy was in sherlock gnome, which good enough.
ok, bright young things, we remember that? stephen fry, the director of that, was in sherlock holmes: a game of shadows(2011), the sequel to sherlock holmes(2009). those movies had rdj(marvel), jude law(marvel), rachel mcadams(marvel), and jared harris(marvel).
stephen fry played mycroft, and jude law played watson. this is of course, RELEVENT, when you remember that in the movie Wilde(1999), they slept together. stephen fry ALSO slept with michael sheen in that movie.
james d'arcy(marvel) was an extra in that movie, and guess what? james d'arcy played sherlock in sherlock(2002), which had vincent d'onofrio(marvel) as moriarty. ian mckellan(marvel), was also in a sherlock, mr holmes(2015), i believe.
oh, and jude law was actually in a different sherlock as well, but that one doesnt matter. guy henry(who was in bright young things) was two different sherlocks. he was also in kenneth williams: fantaboulosa!(2006) with michael sheen.
ben kingsley(marvel) was in without a clue(1988).(i feel like im missing an important one, but i dont remember what)
ok so on the note of Shakespeare: first off, david tennant is in like eight. EIGHT.
first one we'll talk about is much ado about nothing. his has catherine tate, who! doctor who. doctor who also has matt smith(marvel), karen gillan(marvel) and guestars gemma chan(marvel), letitia wright(marvel), andrew garfield(marvel), michael sheen, ian mckellan(marvel), bill paterson(remember him?), nina sosanya(good omens, casanova which is totally relevant), fenella woolgar(bright young things), adrian scarborough(bright young things), stephen fry, toby jones(again, marvel!), mark gatiss(bright young things, good omens, and bbc sherlock. also im p sure hes gay). (speaking of gay, neil tennant of the pet shop boys is gay)Another doctor who thingy has hayley atwell(marvel) WHO.
was in brideshead revisited(2008), the book for which was written by evelyn waugh, and one of the characters for which was ALSO inspired by stephen tennant. that or evelyn waughs gay lover from college(literally the plot of brideshead revisted)(evelyn waugh was way cooler when he was gay. then he went conservative. then he died.)
(conservative unlike the (stephen) tennant family tree, a good amount of them were liberal scottish politicians, including one or two of the davids.)
back to much ado about nothing, another version had joss whedon(marvel) and clark gregg(marvel), which admittedly wasnt very good, shakespeare was not written for americans. the kenneth branaugh(marvel) version however, that was the best version ive seen.
its worth noting the david tennant one was like an actual stage production(a hilarious one), the other two were regular movies.
next one we will discuss: hamlet. everyones done hamlet. david tennant. michael sheen. good omens. kenneth branaugh. botany candycrush. jude law. ethan hawke(marvel). ian mckellan. its nearly ridiculous. oh god bright young things by the pet shop boys started playing as i was typing this
david tennant has also done richard ii. so has patrick stewart(marvel).richard iii is one that he has not done, but ian mckellan has. that version (1995) also had rdj. (they kissed lmaoooo)(not in the movie like outside of it)(magneto kissed iron man yes thats what im getting at). so has bonaparte cragglethatch.so has peter dinklage(marvel), and martin freeman. oh, and kenneth branaugh.
david skinny ass teeth(im sorry) also did as you like it, more shakespeare. so did, you guessed it, kenneth branaugh! and his version had alfred molina(marvel).
next we have romeo and juliet, yes david tennant did that, so did james mcavoy in gnomeo and juliet and sherlock gnome.paul rudd(marvel) also did that.
david tennant also did the comedy of errors, and thats the only one i know who did that ngl.he also did the merchant of venice. so did charlie cox(marvel).
i-need-a-more-exciting-way-of-saying-david-tennant-dear-god also did king lear.so did ian mckellan.
righty kenneth branaugh did henry v, which had christian bale(marvel and batman. batman might be relevent i havent decided weather i want to include it.)
he also did all is true, so did ian mckellan, and he did loves labour lost, and so did emily mortimer(bright young things)
shakespeaRe-Told: had james mcavoy, bill paterson, billie piper(rose tyler, i), and nina sosanya.
THE SANDMAN. the sandman(written by neil gaiman, ofc) had david tennant, james mcavoy, and michael sheen in the same episode, as well as georgia tennant.
the sandman also had lourdes faberes(pollution in good omens), and stephen fry in three episodes.
it also had bill paterson.
smaller connections, kinda:-stephen tennant(remember him? brother of david pax tennant?)'s mother had a cousin who was a lover of oscar wilde. I also have a family tree of this family written down, i dont know why.
peter o'toole, who was in bright young things, played casanova in the tv show casanova, the same person david tennant was playing. (they played the old and young versions)
Ill add more connections later probably, for now I'm watching doctor who.
