is that shrimp expecting? kinda! but sadly, not babies, I think it is (don’t quote me) Cladogonium ogishimae, a parasitic algae.
there are mixed reviews online of whether it is deadly or not but I preformed a salt dip on this shrimp and now have it in isolation to keep an eye on it. overall, the shrimp seems to be acting normal so I’m not too worried. the other shrimp I got with it all look good and the stock at the store was all amazing so I’m just going to keep this one isolated for now and go from there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bug butt!
So I have a micro four thirds camera, as of last week. And a vintage telephoto zoom lens. And a compatible extension tube. Obviously I stuck them all together and did some macro.
Camera sandwich below the cut:
If it looks silly, but it works, is it actually silly?
This is, surprisingly to me, kind of great for macro. This zoom lens has a stupid long minimum focus distance (usually). Extension tube addresses this, but I've still got an insane macro working distance. The photos above were taken from a couple feet away.
The mft sensor automatically "doubles" the focal length, so I've actually got a 160-400mm macro-ish capable lens right now.
I don't know what the reproduction ratio is, and I don't really care. I've never been a stickler for getting the "true" 1:1 reproduction ratio. But I can frame my subjects and can get some cool photos of small things (as long as they don't move!)

I've caught a tiny jumping spider 2 days ago and I wanted to let it leave yesterday in the evening but it webbed a tiny hammock under the lid. It's sleeping now and it's the cutest thing I've ever seen 🥺

My fuckaround project for today was getting much younger Sage's former-favorite lens, a Canon EFS 60mm macro, to fit on my current camera body. This lens was dropped in the swamp many many years ago, I sent it to Canon desperate for repairs, but they returned it; unsalvageable. I was heartbroken.
The lens, through and through, is covered in mold/mildew/haze/toxic arsenal swamp water residue. I was interested to see if it would take grungy, gross, icky photos, as I do enjoy.. grungy gross icky photos after all. To make it fit, I had to remove the baffle, and add some spacers under the mount so it would clear the mirror. This of course means there are major light leaks and wild blowouts, which... I don't terribly mind, honestly. Adds character, for a lens like this.
Anyway, after some test shots, there is... no grime? Just a gorgeous haze. Could I achieve that with my L series lenses by slapping a filter over them? Sure. But that's not the point, that defeats the purpose. Plus I'm genuinely surprised the lens is still able to take such sharp closeups as well. Perhaps death is not the end for this lens.
I'll post some shots with it over the next couple days.

TIL that asbestos is not a specific mineral, it's a form that several different minerals can take. It's the wispy thin fibers that are dangerous because they break off into small particles that fuck up your lungs. If the same mineral forms into a regular sized crystal, it's not dangerous in the same way. (whether or not each individual mineral itself is toxic is another question but. Don't lick stuff!! And wash your hands!!)
...also it's not always white. It can be green. Like the kind that my state has. Which I may have picked up off the ground because I did not know this. (I will be ok. I think the formation wasn't hairlike enough to be super dangerous, it was more flaky than anything. washed my hands a bunch and changed/washed clothes just to be sure.)
I did get photos before trying to look up what it might be (probably tremolite) and then panicking a bit. 🫠 (I have since pulled up a bunch of articles on which rocks to no touchy under any circumstances.) It has been put in a box and double ziploced until I can determine how dangerous it actually is and how to dispose of it if so. If I'm overreacting, so be it, nothing lost.
...some neat stuff from the same road cut.
...scare aside, I just learned what road cuts are (didn't know the term for them, I'd always stare at them fascinated on car trips because you can see the internal rock layers) and it never occurred to me that you can just...walk up to them and take pieces off. So I got a bit excited. This one was mostly soft enough to break off parts by hand (shale, I think) but there were plenty of bits around to pick up as well.
I've started to really appreciate that even the rocks people tend to think of as "boring" are really fascinating in their own right.
