Years later, he uses his athleticism to assist several high school teams, never focusing on just one. Synopsis of Skate-Leading☆Stars English Subbed
Kensei Maeshima, a child figure skating prodigy, abruptly quits the sport after his one-sided rival, Reo Shinozaki, refuses to recognise his talent. Kensei now attends Inodai High School and uses his athletic abilities to help the other sports teams, but he never officially joins one. One day, Reo announces his transition from singles figure skating to team-based skate-leading and joins St. Clavis Gakuin High School, the Grand Prix champions from the previous year. Hayato Sasugai, a classmate with an enigmatic connection to Reo, persuades Kensei to switch to skateboarding in order to finally beat his rival in a competition. Kensei's unexpected entrance into the Inodai Skate-Leading Club is met with hostility from the club's current members. Kensei is a strong singles skater, but he lacks the teamwork skills needed to perform well in skate-leading. Kensei's teammates do not believe he is a good fit to be their "Lead" because of his hot-headed, impatient attitude, inconsistent skating performances, and a complicated history with some of the members. However, in order to qualify for the Grand Prix Finals and possibly defeat St. Clavis Gakuin, the team must work together to resolve these issues.

So I’ve just watched the first episode of Skate-Leading Stars and I never post meta on anything cause who am I to judge but what the hell just happened in the anime.
please don’t kill me just listen up
Generally speaking I liked it but...
Is it just me being clumsy and having hard time memorizing a basic aerobics choreography or you have to actually be nuts to consider anyone after (presumably) years of break could put on a random, more or less fitted pair of skates and freaking nail a performance first time he stepped on the ice (according to the the dude who gave him skates he hasn’t been skating of a long time (I mean, if he didn’t even have skates (also was the dude stalking him?))) falling literally once, but other than that doing fantastic, and having maximum a few days to practice?
Isn’t it the level of insanity Disney made in one of plot-wise the worst movies they ever made, Jump In, in which a dude comes last minute to a competition, kicks out a team member and then kinda wins without actually training because Disney wanted so and those who actually worked hard are made into bad guys?
So the watched-it-once-and-memorized-it magical ability of the main character, is that a thing? But even if, after years without skating? Whaaaa...? What was it even proving, plot-wise? I was watching with subtitles that said axel instead of flip and had to double check but i feel like at this point it doesn’t matter because our red ray of sunshine must be a superhuman anyway. Unless I’m wrong. Unless it’s actually a supernatural story (now that would be a plot twist!)
I can’t say I wasn’t kind of enjoying watching it but thinking realistically I do hope it won’t continue the level of pointlessness and “because the authors said so” kind of storytelling and character building cause damn, that was weird. The main character? Got me. The glasses lil bro? Got me even more. But the nonsense part? Ugh!
I also wonder what happens next and hope it won’t take one of the obvious directions, like:
a) the white dude kind of protecting his lil bro and acting cold because of that
b) the little brother vengeance being a lie all the way like the ankle and the white dude sent him and is a sneaky motherfucker
c) they’re not even related
d) the grand finale will reveal hardly anything and leave the audience waiting for the next 4 years *ugly sobbing*
So yeah, I hope for:
e) something entirely else (give us rage, srsly)
sorry i was too lazy to check the characters’ names
Idk, if you’re still here, what are your thoughts reader? I will probably argue that learning a basketball move and an entire ice skating choreography are two different things

Skate Leading Stars (SPOILERS for the first six episodes)
Ok so I'm no diehard anime critic. I actually suck at watching any type of series because I have the attention span of a fruit fly. I tend to forget about series I'm in the middle of and if its not engaging, I'm gonna lose interest. But I just finished the first six episodes of Skate Leading Stars and I just have some things to say about it. In fact I'm not even critiquing the anime I'm jst gonna say shit that annoyed me
BE WARNED SPOILERS!
Kensei, our main character, is arrogant, argumentative and a bit annoying. He relies too much in his ability to copy things instead of focusing on his basics and foundations and actually learning how to skate lead. From what I've seen, skate leading is completely different to figure skating. There are 4-5 other people there on the ice with you. That four other people you have to sync with at all times, keep in mind when moving and just timing everything together with. He just does what he wants, whether the team likes it or not. I will admit that he does learn to more of a team player by episode six though, which leads me to the next point.
Wth??? They ragged on him SO hard for not skate leading properly and doing the routine exactly as it's choreographed and when he does, its apparently the wrong thing to do? And then they put so much pressure on him after that, telling him to skate freely instead for their free skate. Like? DO you want him to be a team skater or what?! And the whole "when we say conform to our skating we dont actually mean conform!" Like dude what do you want him to do?! The fact that they rely on him, a first year, so much that they think changing the way he skates is what will make or break the team is just.. no. no good.
This also leads me to the timeskips and whatever the fuck that training camp was. Idk if I've been spoiled by other sports animes and getting to actually see things like practice matches, training camp arcs and official matches, but I think SLS really lacks in story. I feel absolutely no connection to the characters. They have no bonding moments, hell they barely have dialogue. We barely get snippets of the other boys and mostly their screen time is really dependant on their interactions with Kensei. In my opinion this anime does a lot of telling and little showing. We go from an episode where Kensei gets challenged to be more of a team skater and jumps immediately to him doing that perfectly in the next episode. There's no showing of the process, they literally just say in the beginning of epipsode 6 that Kensei got better at following the rules and then he does.
So far I've watched 6 episodes, but I still can't get a sense of any themes in this anime. There isnt much friendship or team connection. There is no real story of hardship- our MC being great at skating- and being underdogs. The rivalry is barely even there because Reo (the supposed antagonist) is hardly in any of the scenes and mostly doesnt interact with the MC. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, it is only 6 episodes but like, in 6 episodes Haikyuu created the quick duo, KnB formed their shadow and light pair, PoT showed the skills of their regulars and MC etc. This anime is so fast paced and gives little return for the amount of ground they cover. Like we're already finished with the First competition of the Grand Prix series.
They dont really show the routines, in fact their free skate in episode 6 was just passing images that showed nothing. I'm not sure where theyre going with this anime but it feels like an anime you put on when you want to pass time without taking anything in. They actually need to show more of Aki, Yuki, the captain (i forgot his name sry) and Itsuki, preferably outside the orbit of Kensei, pls
The only thing i like abt this anime was Sasugai Hayato. He's funny, determined, smart and flip flops btwn reigning in Kensei and egging him on. Its hilarious. He's got an ugly attitude but i love him. Still, he doesn't add much to the story other than another angle for the whole Reo rival thing.
All in all, idk if i'll continue with this anime beyond 2 or 3 more episodes.
