The Flesh in The Magnus Archives is associated with Christianity in MAG 5 - Thrown Away, MAG 19/20 - Confession/Desecrated Host, MAG 58 - Trail Rations, and MAG 130 - Flesh, and I think that's very interesting, because I started thinking about it yesterday, and I knew that The Flesh was associated with Christianity, but I have Thoughts.
There's a lot of stuff with Catholicism, with the whole eating the flesh and blood of Christ in MAG 19/20. There's also the Lord's prayer appearing in MAG 5 and MAG 58. And then of course the Gnostic temple in MAG 130.
There's also the whole mormon -- and probably other types of Christianity -- idea of heaven stripping away all your flaws, which is actually pretty horrifying if you think about it, and if you're not good in the eyes of God, then you won't go to heaven, and that's often just not being allocishet and other similarly fine things to be and do. And like in the season 5 Flesh episodes, a lot of it was wanting to be seen as useful and good to others at the expense of yourself, and that came with body image issues, and literally marching to your own death -- because if you don't, then you'll be not useful and dead.
I'm not entirely sure how to articulate my thoughts here, but I am thinking. Sure am thinking. Please, think with me.
(AND yes this is an @a-mag-a-day thing, bc MAG 130 got me thinking)

Flesh and Christianity
Someone asked me to make a video about the intersection between the Flesh and the Eucharist a while back, and I will, but I also want to scream my broader thoughts about Flesh and religion into the void for a moment. Pardon any rambling, I find this very interesting but there is also a LOT to cover and I’m frantically writing this at 1am. Everything I say about theology is, for the most part, a generalisation or simplification, because there is no way in hell that I’m fitting the entirety of the Catholic theology on the body into a tumblr post.
Disclaimers over.
In episode 130, we hear Lucia Wright describe the ‘hole filled with meat’. We later learn that this was the Flesh ritual, something that Gertrude calls ‘The Last Feast.’ The connection to the Last Supper may be a bit obvious, but I do think it establishes that the Flesh does tie into Christianity, both symbolically (‘this bread is my body’), and perhaps more spiritually. I’ll get to that in a bit, but there’s a more to say about Episode 130 first.
Gnosticism is a lesser known branch of Christianity, mostly by design (persecution on grounds of heresy will do that to you). The relevant part is that Gnostics believed in an entity that oversaw and shaped the physical word; an entity known as the Demiurge. Some Gnostics believed the Demiurge to be malevolent, and possibly the entity known as Yahweh/Jehovah (heresy indeed), which is an incredibly contentious can of worms for another day. As Lucia Wright puts it, as it’s the overseer of the physical, the Demiurge could be referred to as ‘The God of the Flesh’. Therefore, an old Gnostic temple being chosen as the location for the Last Feast seems to be more than just a coincidence, or a connection in name only, but something more spiritual. Therefore, its my opinion that the Flesh is not just connected to Christianity, but is integral to it - at least in the TMA universe.
The human body is so topical in Christianity that it has its own branch of theology. The body was created in God’s own image (and isn’t that a Fleshy concept in and of itself? Our bodies aren’t “ours” - they have been created and shaped by some entity beyond our understanding). Humans, in Christian theology, are broadly divided into body and soul. Our souls are what make us divine - our bodies hold us back, and are generally considered to be what carries our sins. ‘The flesh is weak.’ The body is what tempts us towards our whims; food and sex, gluttony and lust. Without our useless sinful flesh, we would be far closer to God (incidentally, this was also the thinking in several early neo-Platonic Islamic schools of thought, but that’s not really relevant and is just the philosophy nerd in me speaking). Our bodies are but vessels; for our souls, and for the weight of human sin, always tempting us to keep sinning. This leaves a door for the Flesh wide open; because the idea of our bodies being evil, or even of being designed by another entity entirely (the Demiurge for Gnostics, Yahweh/God for most other branches of Christianity) is objectively horrifying, and ties very neatly into what can make the Flesh so scary. It’s not just freaky meat - it’s freaky evil meat that’s outside of our control. The flesh is sinful, the flesh is transformed - this bread is the body of Jesus, this wine is his blood.
If you’re in a branch of Christianity that follows Communion and believes it to be a case of transubstantiation (bread and wine turning into the body and blood of Christ), you essentially commit religious cannibalism every Sunday during the Eucharist. If you deconstruct the Eucharist, it’s a veritable horror flick - a group of people enter a room, eat bread that is really the flesh of a human body that died two millennia ago, and drink wine that is really the blood of that same body. More than that, it’s transformed; regular food and drink turn into meat, and everyone present seems to accept that. The transmutation of the flesh, and the consumption of a human body, especially in such a holy and revered setting, feels very Fleshlike to me. This is why I consider the Flesh to have been one of the entities present in Episode 20 - Father Burroughs unwittingly committing cannibalism during Holy Communion is such a powerful image of the intersection between the Flesh and Christianity, that it made me go down this spiraling rabbit-hole of thoughts.
To be clear, there are huge discrepancies between various Christian groups on how they interpret both the Eucharist and the human body; what I describe here is mostly the Catholic interpretation  (though it applies to quite a few groups), because Father Burroughs was Catholic and it makes all my theorising more plot-relevant.
Anyways, that’s it for now. Thank you, void, for listening.

mag 130 - meat
this definitely gets my award for the funniest episode title. just 'meat'. iconic
in fact, i really like this enitire statement because it's just seems so fucked at first glance. 'let's fill a pit with meat to end the world!' like that doesn't sound absurd. what would even a flesh themed apocalypse look like? but that's what i really like about the flesh. it's such an animal fear that it has to be adapted and bent in really interesting ways for it to apply to humans
for example, combining it with religion is super interesting. like, i've never been religious in the slightest and my grasp of the details of a lot of modern beliefs is vague at best, but isn't the flesh and the body something that appears a lot in religion, folklore, and mythology all around the world? whether it be about how the human form is made or the bodies or blood of gods forming the land or dieties with abnormal bodies signifiying their godhood. when you get into it, religion and the flesh is not as weird a combination it might seem at first
the meat hole is still very funny, tho
jon deciding to go after daisy is a moment that really hurts. of course, the web here is doing it's thing by pushing him into finding an anchor, but his motivations don't need to be manipulated. jon is alone, thinks he's loosing himself, and is so goddamn self-sacrificial. he's so willing to destroy himself for the greater good, even if that greater good is saving the woman who in canon is stated to have caused the scariest moment in his life. like, at this point it might be more about finding an acceptable way to destroy himself than just saving her

MAG 130 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: putting up a new fence.
The episode title we have all waited for (or, at least I did...). It was only a matter of time! Meat. Just Meat.
LUCIA: "Telling my story. Do you… will-will it help with the nightmares?" GERTRUDE: "If that’s your primary goal, my dear, I would suggest you speak to a qualified counselor. We can suggest one, if you like. That said, I do believe most people find the process of giving a statement to be rather… mm, cathartic. And whatever nightmares your experiences left you with, I’m sure they won’t be bothering you much longer." Gertrude be like, that person is hurting and I will leave them with a set of nightmares on a whole different level, but they have information, so it’s a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
"I’m not sure how happy she had been about my lighting a candle for her in them. Still, at the end of the day, I did it for me, not her. She’s gone." Yeah, I feel the same. Big or little rituals afterwards, they are for ourselves.
What is it with the Flesh and religion? Is it because of the stark contrast? Flesh is physical and religion is spiritual. Is it because religion sometimes dictates over other people's bodies?
Gertrude gives the generation term "boomer" a completely different meaning!
GERTRUDE: "Tom Haan might be a bit more of a problem, as it looks like he also survived, but I’m hopeful he has been weakened enough by this failure to not be an issue in the near future. Hopefully, he’ll fade away or burn out as they tend to when robbed of their purpose." That must have been a horrible confirmation for what I guess Jon already suspected. If he stops, he'll literally starve.
GERTRUDE: "Also worth watching out for any… additional esoteric fallout from the ritual attempt, like that Carlisle boy down in Wandsworth." Throwback to MAG 18!
JON: "I found this tape tucked in a corner of my desk drawer (sigh) covered in cobwebs. I suppose subtlety has gone out the window a bit, and the question is now simply… how much I trust the Spider to have my best interests at heart." No little Germa- aaah British boy! Don't trust the Spider!
JON: "About an anchor. What was it she said, “the siren call of flesh.” Hm. It’s possible, I suppose. It would – hurt, but – well, what’s another scar?" That is not a healthy mindset... But after all what’s happened it’s an understandable reaction.

Note
This episode and the next one have the absolute most straightforward titles... which seems fitting for the Flesh.
Like, they're just:
M E A T F L E S H
The same goes for the Flesh's ritual. Like, it's absolutely fitting and symbolic, they are seeking to satisfy that which cannot be satisfied, if you are not feeding it then you will be fed to it, there is no distinction between servant and meal, it's got that plodding, despairing, conveyor-belt feel to it, it sums the Flesh up perfectly, but also: Meat Hole. Hole o' Meat.
Jon voice: more meat.
It is a very fitting ritual for the Flesh, simplistic yet purposeful, while also being weirdly funny.

appropriate, of course, that the archivist talks about himself like a hunk of meat after eating a flesh statement but oooooooooooo something something elias horny grip in prison hearing his ritual accept his position... acquiesce... submit.... jon reaches for martyrdom so willingly, so desperately... everyone around him hates him so much. he hates himself so much. just one more scar for the collection!!
OH SHIT TYPING THAT I REALIZED THAT'S NOT EVEN THE FIRST TIME HE'S SAID THAT...
Tumblr media
i talk a lot about jon's monstrous becoming, his accepting his role as Archivist (that's my 👹 tag btw) but this is a whole new sort of acceptance... it's his willing acceptance as the archive, the instrument of the watcher's crown
it's definitely not informed consent lol but it's him shouldering his cross, bearing his crown of thorns, laying down as the lamb of god!!!
WHAT'S ANOTHER SCAR FOR THE COLLECTION!!! WHAT'S ONE MORE THING TO GIVE!!!!!!!!!

MEAT TIME MEAT TIME MEAT TIME MEAT TIME
Howdy, I'm Dolphin Landscaping-Your-Mind and I'm a fan of The Flesh tma.
@a-mag-a-day
(Ramble ahead)
GERTRUDE If that's your primary goal, my dear, I would suggest you speak to a qualified counsellor. We can suggest one if you like? That said, I do believe most people find the process of giving a statement to be rather... cathartic. And whatever nightmares your experience has left you with, I'm sure they won't be bothering you much longer.
(MAG 130 - Flesh)
ARCHIVIST Yes, Basira, he is. And I am sorry about that. But we needed it. Anyway, you're the one who wants to be like Gertrude. You think she'd give a damn about a few bad dreams?
(MAG 141 - Doomed Voyage)
*stares directly into the camera*
Still, Jon, not cool. Gertrude... you're not like Gertrude. And I don't think she was bad -- I don't think she was good either, I just think that she was doing what she thought would save the world.
Still, at the end of the day, I did it for me, not for her. She's gone. There isn't anything but us.
Isn't that a Flesh thing? That there isn't anything that separates us from other animals, that when we die there isn't any special afterlife to house us, that we just die with our bodies?
Chewed and crushed together, it was impossible to tell what had once been animal and what might have once been us. It was all just meat.
The fear of being meat, of seeing a corpse and knowing it will be you, it is you. The fear of death, of one day becoming a lifeless unmoving corpse. The disgust at flesh and meat, at rotting flesh and meat. Insignificance. Pointlessness.
The Flesh isn't just The Flesh. Like Gerry said, colours.
Also worth watching out for any additional esoteric fallout from the ritual attempt, like that Carlisle boy down in Wandsworth.
Like here! Toby Carlisle was scary to me because of the rotting part of it, less so because of the meat, though it was the thing that was spooky. Idk. Corruption, fear of rotting, that fit.
What was that she said, "The siren call of flesh?" Hm. It's possible, I suppose. It would hurt, but... Well, what's another scar?
JON.
JONATHAN SIMS.
:(
I'm not ready for MAG 131.
--
ALSO i have thoughts about the flesh and christianity, so uh, stay tuned for that ig! uh yea, ramble over.
the flesh tma my absolute beloved im gonna be sooo normal tomorrow.
