Magiranger is cool because they introduce you to this nice happy family and hype you up to see them learning magic from their mom and then the show immediately kills her in the first episode without hesitation

Trivia - Arch Seirei Artemis and the Seirei
I knew doing this trivia in particular was gonna be lengthy and figured might as well put in trivia for all the Seirei while I’m at it. Arch Seirei Artemis is still the primary focus of the trivia though. It’s not gonna be perfect, but oh well.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber, and some implied self-doubt and guilt issues.
Tumblr media
General
The Seirei are magical entities akin to angels from Wonder World who are connected to the Seiken and enable transformation into a Kamen Rider.
Their name kanji (聖霊) means ‘holy spirit’, befitting their association with the Seiken.
They were inspired by the Heavenly Saints from Magiranger.
They are where the Riders’ elemental magic is drawn from.
They are capable of taking on a human form when living on the real world. Their true forms vary depending on the Rider and their associated element.
Their true forms are usually visible in each Rider's henshin sequence. (Hence the transformation sequences of Saber, Blades, and Espada.)
Only Seiken wielders and those with high exposure to magic (Like Shion and Mei) can hear the Seirei's voices from within their Seiken.
All their true forms are humanoid in physical appearance and appear behind their user the moment the transformation is triggered.
The swordsmen call their Seirei by their names and sometimes call them by their Seiken's names. Sometimes when they transform (especially in some of the badass scenes) they shout this. "(Seirei name), Seirei of (Element)! I call upon your power! Come!" For example, Kaede would shout "Yukina, Seirei of Ice! I call upon your power! Come!" For group henshins, they would each say their Seirei's name and element and shout "We call upon your powers! Come!" in unison.
Arch Seirei Artemis (Played by FRUITS ZIPPER’s Amane Tsukiashi)
She is based off the goddess of the same name from Greek mythology and is a lot friendlier than her counterpart.
She often appears as an advisor and observer to the SoL Riders.
She used to have a group of hunters to help her watch over the Sword of Logos and assist them in battle, but Yumeko betrayed her and slaughtered them after becoming Nimcha, forcing Artemis to defeat and seal her in the Moonlight Diamond.
She only vanquished Lennox from Wonder World on Tassel’s advice.
During Touma's henshin sequence into Xross Saber, Artemis descends down and does a motion similar to that of "granting a blessing" onto him.
During the days before Kyomu was sealed in the Book of Ruin, there was an ancient Seiken which granted its user the power of pure raw magical energy that makes up the elemental magic of all the present-day Seiken, the Mahouken Sakkaku (Magic Sword Illusion), which was considered the most powerful of all the Seiken, even surpassing Saikou and Kurayami in terms of power. As such, its wielder was considered the most powerful swordsman in all the land. However, great power came with great insanity.
While most details have been lost to time, archives tell that the Seirei of the Mahouken was a humanoid six-armed being whose body seemed to be made of pure raw magic energy and the previous Arch Seirei. The Seirei of the Mahouken fed off of its wielder's will and fueled their more psychopathic tendencies to extremes. Sakkaku's wielder thought that since no swordsman can hold a candle to his power, he should be the only swordsman because of this. However, unbeknownst to him, there was a Seiken that could surpass even Sakkaku's god-like power and magic, the Haouken Xross Saber, Artemis’ Seiken.
Back then it was much like all the other Seiken, containing the power to alter reality and gives its user the elemental magic of the stars themselves. Its wielder at the time was a very powerful mage who had been studying how to split magical energy into separate types of magic.
When word of the Mahouken wielder's atrocities came to the mage, both he and Artemis were determined to put an end to this being's reign of terror. An intense battle between the two swordsmen wielding these magic swords took place which devasted the world around them. When the dust finally settled, the mage and Artemis had emerged victorious.
Not wanting any other swordsmen going insane with power, the mage used the Haouken and his special magic to destroy Sakkaku and turn its energy into the elemental magic everyone knows. Then, he sacrificed his own life to split the Haouken into magical energy, infusing into elemental energies that would become Seiken that would one day unite and summon the Haouken in its full glory to the one who wields the first Seiken forged by human hand, stronger than ever before.
He entrusted Artemis with protecting both the real world and Wonder World and watching over the Seiken wielders who would one day summon the Seiken she was connected with, stronger than even before, making her the new Arch Seirei.
Ever since, Sakkaku was lost to time due to its destruction and subsequent energy redirection and has become a cautionary tale to all members of the Sword of Logos while Artemis had been watching over the Sword of Logos, waiting for the day where heroes would rise and summon her sword to them, blessed with power beyond anything one can imagine.
Tassel saw the moment Artemis was made the new Arch Seirei and truly believed she would regain her full power one day as her deceased wielder prophesized and is fully supportive of her despite her initially being uncertain of her newfound role.
She was uncertain of becoming the new Arch Seirei at first due what the Sakkaku’s Seirei had done, but with Tassel’s support she grew into a courageous and responsible Arch Seirei, guiding the Sword of Logos and watching over them.
Ice Seirei Yukina (Played by Hikaru Yamamoto)
A kind-hearted Seirei like a princess who cares deeply about her friends.
Her name kanji means ‘snow flower’ (雪華), refencing her kind nature.
She felt guilty about Ayaka’s death, especially since Kaede had to witness it happen, even if she didn’t directly see it. She wants to make amends for it when her Seiken reappeared to Kaede in the present day.
Thunder Seirei Raito (Played by Satsuki Nakayama)
Serves as a mentor figure for Shion when she took up his Seiken.
Was amazed at Shion’s determination when she first became Espada.
His name kanji (雷当) means ‘thundering justice’.
Sound Seirei Naoto (Played by FRUITS ZIPPER’s Luna Nakagawa)
She has the appearance of a cutesy idol singer in both human and her true form.
Her name kanji means ‘south sound’ (南音), a play on words on ‘south bound’ and refencing her being the Seirei of Sound.
While she was asleep during her Seiken’s repair, she could communicate with Tetsuo via telepathy often by singing lullabies.
Flame Seirei Homura (Played by Rin Takanashi)
She found Touma’s desire to make people happy through books adorable, prompting her to escape the darkness Daichi had trapped her in 15 years ago.
Her name kanji (炎) means ‘flame’ in reference to her element.
She comes across as a little hot-blooded, but she’s really just passionate about helping Touma get used to being a swordsman.
Water Seirei Mizuhara (Played by Atsushi Shiramata)
He holds the memories of his Seiken’s past users close to him.
His name kanji (水原) means ‘water field’.
He’s easily one of the most adaptable Seirei in Wonder World.
Land Seirei Riku (Played by Eiji Akaso)
He’s the physically strongest of the Seirei, partially due to his element.
His name kanji (陸) means ‘land’ in reference to the element of earth.
He understands why Ogami prefers physical attacks over magic the most.
Wind Seirei Fuutaro (Played by Ryo Matsuda)
Due to his element of wind, he is faster than most Seirei.
His name kanji (風太郎) means ‘wind strong’.
He can tolerate Ren’s gremlin antics, as he knows he’s still learning to understand true strength.
Light Seirei Hikaru (Played by Yuki Kubota)
He fused with Yuri after Bahato was sealed in the Book of Ruin, making Yuri a hybrid in the process.
His name is read with the kanji for ‘light’ (光).
He doesn’t have much experience with other Seirei due to his time in Avalon.
Dark Seirei Yamina (Played by Nana Mori)
Her precognitive powers let her access the World of Darkness.
Her name kanji (闇名) means ‘dark distinguished’.
Her true form is similar to Homura’s but themed after a dark dragon.
Smoke Seirei Noroko (Played by Yuria Haga)
There seems to be very little that can break through her near-stoic demeanor.
Her name is read as ‘smoke child’ (煙子) and she’s the only Seirei whose name is close to the name of their Seiken, in Noroko’s case, Noroshi.
She knows her magic’s limits, often being undeterred by stronger opponents countering her.
Time Seirei Tokiwa (Played by Kohei Murakami)
In contrast to Noroko, he can be quick to anger.
His name kanji means ‘a tale of time’ (時話) in reference to Saber’s story motifs.
Ryoga is one of the few who can keep him in check.
Void Seirei Naiko (Played by Arisa Komiya)
She is responsible for returning excess magical energy from Xross Saber to the void.
Her name kanji (無子) means ‘void child’.
She’s one to reach out to the outsider who feels alone in the world.
Dream Seirei Yuna (Played by Ami Tomite)
She only wants to help people pursue their dreams.
Her name is read with the kanji for ‘dream’ (夢).
The whereabouts of her and her Seiken after Yumeko’s first defeat are unknown until Bahato’s debut in episode 34.

Zenkaiger ep. 40 rant
So are we gonna ignore how this feels like Game of Thrones season 8 all over again?
They did my boy Hakaizer DIRTY, I tell you!
God, I said it before and I’ll say it again: I fucking HATE what they did to Hakaizer, cuz look what happened, now he’s back on the rIGht SiDe as Isao Goshikida. No more Hakaizer, only Isao, and that fucking pisses me off because they could have done so so much MORE if they kept Hakaizer as a Kikainoid instead of pulling a damn Darth Vader on us.
That, and Hakaizer is arguably my favorite character out of the entire cast because of his unique personality and outlook that is also linked to Stacey’s character. Now I’m going to bet money that Stacey is gonna end up joining the heroes, he pretty much already has one foot out the door cuz of what they did to Isao and how he views him as a father figure too. Now he’s gone and pretty much betrayed Boccowaus by giving the pirates the blueprints of Hakaiju-oh, amounting to nothing short of treason that would end in execution.
Also, did nobody notice that Hakaiju-oh transforms a la Transformers style INTO Hakaizer? Yet somehow towards the end, Zox was able to jump into its mouth and suddenly Hakaizer is in its helm functioning as its central control unit? It makes no goddamn sense.
If they’d kept Hakaizer as a robot, it would have made Stacey’s moral dilemma a much tastier, better turn that nobody would be able to see coming. He’d have to choose between either the father figure he always wanted, or the people that could potentially be his first group of real friends. Yet if he ended up siding with Kaito, with Hakaizer as a kikainoid, he’d end up betraying Hakaizer who is perhaps the first person to show him genuine kindness and fatherly affection, because Hakai would have been sincerely loyal to the Tojitendo and be heartbroken to see his “son” turn against him.
40 would be him choosing to either risk Hakaizer’s life by giving the Zenkaigers the blueprints, or him hesitantly helping Hakaizer because that isn’t actually the Hakai he knew. Actual damn character growth! Color me also fucking mad that they made Stacey, the guy who stood up to Barashitara to tell him to back off and put some respect to his name, the one who pretty much saw Hakaizer as his father, SIT THERE AND DO NOTHING WHILE HAKAI IS SCREAMING IN PAIN.
Out of character as FUCK for Stacey.
And when Isao came back, does nobody notice that he’s visibly lacking the little attachment on his head where I assume they’re feeding him commands and all that?
Jesus fuck I’m salty about what they did to Hakaizer lmao.

Okay, okay…
… Okay.
I am calm.
……
………
No. I’m not. I’m so excited for next weekend’s ep, I am already doing a random ramble about the preview images. DX
Well… Here we go.
Timeline? What is timeline? XD I’m just gonna go in the order they appear on the website, but I have no idea if that’s actually the order they will occur in in the episode proper.
Tumblr media
Hello, Prime Minister Kano whose surname I forget, nice to make your acquaintance. Even if I don’t trust you. So I’m noting an association w/ white for this lady, w/ her light coloured clothes, the white roses, even the white hospital room, and, of course:
Tumblr media
Since we’ve only seen the ‘students’ (as in, our main team) have these, and not anyone else, not even the Masters, makes me very curious as to why she has it and who it belongs to—her, or someone else? We’ve seen no other suit, so either they’ve kept it a secret—which is unlikely, why cheat themselves out of a potential action figure—so it’s unlikely that another Ryusoulger will actually appear, but it does raise the possibility of whether there used to be at least one more Ryusoulger and they died, maybe even recently. Alternatively, these pendants mean something else. But leaving that mystery, next on the list is what I assume is the team (sans my boys) discovering the rumours about Kano, and maybe realising she’s Ryusoul:
Tumblr media
Featuring what might be a… Bear costume in the back? … What. I have priorities. I must notice random things in the background of everything. Next is a shot of the four little sibs trying to fight the Mummy Minusaur. My first guess is that this is happening while Banba is talking to Kano at the hospital, and that’s why he’s not there. There’s several shots which seem to take place in this location in the fight, identifiable bc of yellow lines on the ground:
Tumblr media
Other images include Kou using a Soul, him trying to mediate between Melto and Asuna, who are apparently having a fight, and the little sibs doing the ending of the rollcall. Interluding is this image:
Tumblr media
Again w/ the white roses. She’s got kind of an evil slump here, but I’m attributing that to her being a Minusaur host and not feeling well. I’m just not getting ‘evil’ vibes from her in general. Perhaps indifferent, and having made some questionable choices regarding information or other things, but I don’t think she’s evil. Of course, I could end up being proved completely wrong, we’ll see. There’s this shot of the brothers facing the Minusaur:
Tumblr media
Which is a better image of the Minusaur. My guess is this is the fight where they end up getting tied up in the ‘bandages’ from the preview. An image that seems to be from the same location is this one:
Tumblr media
…Excuse me while I get distracted by how utterly gorgeous Banba looks in this image. DX This is either before or after the fight pictured above. It looks like it’s in the same place, but it’s either them detransforming after the Minusaur gets away, or talking or something before it arrives. Though… So Kano’s apparently bargaining information about their Master(s) for defeating her Minusaur—however, she’s notably saying she wants it defeated after its completion. Which… Would mean she’d be dead, and couldn’t tell them anything. So either she’s got the information hidden somewhere, or she knows something, whether about how Minusaurs work, even just in relation to Ryusoul Tribe members, or something else. I dunno if they’re going to go the way of them choosing to save her rather than go w/ the deal—I mean… How would she justify not telling them, after admitting she has the information, if they did that? I’m curious to see where they’ll go w/ it, and excited for some background info on my sons. And, of course, lastly:
Tumblr media
There’s a cursed armour in the hospital! DX I am very much hoping, though w/out getting any expectations up, that this means Gaisoulg is related to the brothers’ past. Esp given that they apparently don’t know what became of their Master(s), and that Kano apparently decided it was better not to tell them or that the info was big/heavy enough that she could save it for as a bargaining chip (depending on how sympathetic she’s meant to be), it could be that… Maybe someone ended up w/ the Gaisoulg armour? Either way, Master Black (and maybe Green, but most likely Master Black), has now moved up the list of potential suspects for who betrayed Banba. Not the prime suspect, don’t have one yet, but they’ve moved up on the list.
And to tack an image on the end, esp bc I don’t know when in the ep it happens:
Tumblr media
Kou shielding Melto from the pointer finger, I guess? Apparently Melto and Asuna are arguing, and so are Tyramigo and DimeVolcano. Personally, I don’t blame Tyramigo. But I hope Melto and Asuna work it out. (Yes, yes, I know they obviously will bc Sentai! XD)

Wizard 14-51: -yeah, basically i missed one day of updates and went “fuck it’ll i’ll save it for final thoughts”
i liked wizard, but it is ABSOLUTELY a show that’s better on a rewatch, or spoilered watch at the very least for things like lore and forshadowing. and Wow Haruto’s the least Okay rider i’ve seen in an ending and i’ve seen Kuuga,OOO and Blade.
nice of them to give us a bonus taisen with ep 52-53, -and it’s nice seeing Decade and the other suits again.
Haruto’s soccer backstory should have come up Before the full reveal of ep 38-39. this is Late in the show. at the very least it should have been hinted at.
i also feel like Wizard is more *Consistently* good than fourze. but Fourze has Way higher highs (and lows). it’s good but not great. but i enjoyed my time with it. -minus: the wizard half of Ultimatium, and the myna bird arc. (Novelist is also one i don’t like the vibes off. sir that is a child, step away from the child.)
Wizard in magic land: certainly a movie. -and “Abelism ruins everything” and also: “this is just zi o years early” even down to a king and a guy named Ohma.
Arcs i really liked were: off the top of my head my fav arcs were honestly infinity’s debut and the soccer backstory eps.
next up is a whole lot of Magiranger. which has been good too, i just get invested in rider easier. but i promised @patonigou i’d watch magiranger and by god i will
oh and one last thing: the fuck happened to the coreography between wizard and gaim. Wizard’s fights are Great. the hell Happened?!

Jon’s Toku Thoughts: Gekisou Sentai CarRanger
Tumblr media
Fighting for Traffic Safety! I marathoned through CarRanger so fast because I really wanted to watch it. I was not disappointed I could not stop watching it and it was all I wanted to watch all day. It was soooooooooo amazing and fun. Each episode felt memorable because of all the craziness going on between the CarRangers, SignalMan, Dapp, or the Bowzock. By the end of it I loved everyone. The ending was freaking brilliant and unique; something that only really worked because of the characters of CarRanger. Naoki and Natsumi were my favorites of the series in the beginning by the end of it it was the entire team and SignalMan, Dapp, and VRV Master.
Naoki is my favorite male Blue Ranger ever (tying Yakumo right now maybe slightly edging him out.) I saw a lot of myself in him from being a designer, worrying what my friends think, willing to go to great lengths to protect people in need, loving and wanting to protect animals, figuring things out, and more. I also enjoyed his fighting style with his kicks, his intelligence, and his blasters. The Police Fighter was also my favorite VRV Machine and Dragon Cruiser is amazing too.
Natsumi is my favorite female Yellow Ranger, she was just strong, determined, and kicked ass; also that she was the mechanic was great too. Her personality stood out and she was a great fighter; she also believed in people too. I just loved the episode where the little girl was lying all the time but no one would believe her except Natsumi because she went through something similar and it helped stop the Bowzock. Also, it helped inspire the little girl too. I enjoyed her episode with her back story of why she became a mechanic too. She just has a lot of heart.
Kyosuke has to be the craziest Red I’ve seen and that is very tough with seeing Kai, King, Takaharu, and Lucky lately; he ties as my favorite Red with GaoRed and TyrannoRanger too. He was an amazing leader and inspired his team many times and helped inspire Zonette which helped a lot in the end. His plot with Zonette was fantastic and hilarious especially when he fought as Kyosuke and not Red Racer and defeated a Bowzock.
Minoru is something else, I went from not entirely liking him to loving the hell out of him by the end; I think it was because he reminded me a bit too much of some of my negative traits and that I relate to him pretty close as well. Still his compassion, belief in his friends, strength and wackiness made him an enjoyable character. I mean a guy who gets over his fear of lightning by eating Electric Eel is something else. I would put him in my top 5 Greens honestly.
Yoko unlike some other pinks in some series actually has a character I mean sure she is your girly girl, that likes shopping but she did the accounting at Pegasus working with the Expenses and Finances so she wasn’t dumb by any means and fought to help restore the Imo King so he could be back with his wife. She really cares about everyone and totally wrecks the Bowzock when they piss her off. She is something else and I would say in my top favorite Pinks too.
SignalMan is wonderful, I was completely blown away by how ridiculous, badass, and silly he was. I love how he would say You can’t _______ without my permission and it was a multitude of things. He grew a lot during the season and even with him being out for part of the season with him returning to his home planet it leads to a great storyline and he just leaves a great impression on you. I loved the episode where they use the Traffic Rules against him and he needs to break free from his own teachings to fight back against the enemy. Honestly, this was a great use of the Extra Hero rather than the 6th Ranger in Sentai. I felt that him helping out and having a common enemy worked better than the last few sixth rangers in Sentai at the time. (Though I have only seen DragonRanger and KibaRanger who got shafted a lot in their respective shows).
The Support characters are all amazing, Dapp was one of my favorite mentors ever because he had a bond with the team, helped support them in battle, inspire the team, and wasn’t afraid to smack one of them lol. VRV Master was hilariously awesome and I liked how they played the mystery of who he was. Radietta was hilarious and I loved the Magical Girl/White Racer aspect of her.
The Bowzock were amazing villains, I loved them all they had funny and fantastic characters. Zelmoda is probably my favorite of them I mean that he overcame his fear of lightning because of friendship with Gynamo was amazing. He was also very threatening and a tough opponent. Grotch was silly but also great with his inventions and figuring out that the Imo-Yokan made them grow giant. Gynamo was great he was threatening but just a bit of softy when it came to Zonette, also that he was smart in the end too. Zonette was interesting she had a lot of things going on but it was interesting to see her work things out. Professor Ritchihiker was amazing and helped lead the Bowzock into more villainous territory. He was probably the biggest villain in the beginning when he joins the Bowzock, and he was pretty successful in his takeover of the Bowzock too.
Exhaus was something else, he is probably one of my favorite Sentai villains because of his motives that are very different than most of the other villains and that is just wonderful. Also, that he was very calculated and planned a lot of things from the start in the background made him an amazing villain.
Both the RV Robo and the VRV Robo are two of my favorite Giant Robos ever because of how badass they are and this series had fantastic Giant Monster fights which have kind of been lacking in some Sentai. The VRV Fighters are some of my favorite Mecha ever probably because of the usefulness of their transforming ability. I also love their weapons from the ViBlades, the Auto Blaster, The Giga Formula (Especially the individual weapons of this). Hell everything about this series I love even the suits. I also loved their abilities they got when transformed too.
Seeing the characters learn and grow as the fight against the Bowzock was wonderful and the ending of the series has to be one of my favorites. Since it’s coming out on DVD from Shout Factory or already came out I wanted to be as spoiler-free as I could.
This is definitely one of my favorite Sentai’s ever. Tied with Kyoryuger and MagiRanger.  It’s one of the most fun Sentai’s ever too.

Precure Journey
Best. crossover. ever.
Tumblr media
Precure All Stars DX: Everyone is Friends☆The Collection of Miracles!
Spoilers and Opinions ahead!
So, if there is one thing Toei is good at it making a crossover movie. When I say that I mean they’re good at putting one out at least once a year, while I like their movie Magiranger vs Dekaranger is one I very fondly remember in recent years it’s not been very good, there crossover movies are now a mess, and it’s a shame. Because movies like this one here show that their movies can rival Marvel at times.
So, I’m singing it’s praise it must be good right? Yes, yes it is.
This movie is the first All Stars movie and sets up the fact that all the Precure are set in the same universe. (Somehow? I think Huggto just retconned that?) The plots pretty simple with each respect team (Futari Wa, Splash Star, 5, and Fresh) kinda getting throw into a plot when a monster made up of all their past baddies comes to steal their energy (seriously is that a magical girl thing or something?) and they have to race to team up to stop them.
I might have nostalgia glasses on since this was the first Precure anything I ever wanted but this is a brilliant looking movie, animated movies, and sounding movie. Hell, like you don’t try to sing along when they kick on any of the old cures theme you don’t have a soul. Not to mention the opening for this movie is also adorable and great.
youtube
(I love them all so much *nostalgia crying*) But how’s the plot over all?
So, there is a problem as these movies progress and it’s something Toei just does in general with their properties whereas the cast of the movies grows they just end up being there for spectacle and really loose a point for being there, and it’s a pain if your favorite cure is there and all she does is pose. It kinda loses its wonder.
Luckily this movie does not have that problem! Since there are only 4 teams they all have proper interactions and lines and that set up a purpose very early on in the movie to get involved. The main team of the movie, Fresh, are dealing with the bad guy for most of the time while the other four are playing fairy swap as they get dragged into the plot which is good.
Do Fresh and 5 get more screen time than Futari wa and Splash Star, yeah but that’s understandable since Fresh and 5 are the newest seasons at this point besides all you need is Nagisa and Saki ridiculous faces to make their screen time worth it.
Tumblr media
(Posing like a boss ladies. The magical girl goddesses are proud) But, the movie is great cause it follows may golden crossover rule. The teams need to be equal and be treated equal, no team can be lesser. This is very important, it can make or break a movie.
Let’s look at bad example of this: Batman vs Superman has Batman taking on Superman no problem, so logical Batman is better than Batman in ideals and powers? You would freakin think but no Batman is shown only more powerful than Superman and….*deep sigh* It has problems.
Good Example, this movie. The debatable weakest team is Fresh but they end up earning the respect of the other teams in the movie so, their “lack of power” is generally over looked.
Tumblr media
(just look at these dorks. I love them all)

Okay, I'm wanting to binge Ninninger in the next few days. Any thoughts before I go into this head-first?
yes, so many. ok number one thing to know about me is that i am ninninger’s biggest fan so i freely admit to my bias (it was the first sentai i watched live all the way through) but also... i really love it. and it gets a LOT of hate which is mostly undeserved. yes it’s a bit of a mess but in an endearing way imo? the plot does kind of meander near the middle but i think the characters and themes make up for it a lot.
firstly, the characters: i mean, you’ll either hate takaharu or you won’t. i think he might be one of the most hated red rangers i’ve ever seen which is :/ he’s such a good kid, he’s sweet, he loves his family, he’ll do anything to protect people. he’s kind of dumb, yes, and loud and he says his catchphrase too much but it’s a show for kids so... people are just gonna have to deal w/ it. of the others: yakumo, kasumi, and kinji get the most development by far. i think they’re interesting characters although your mileage may vary on yakumo (he’s kind of... bizarre, just, as a concept). kasumi is widely regarded as one of the best female rangers ever (a classification i don’t care for because all girls are perfect always in my humble gay opinion) but she is really amazing. easily the smartest and most powerful of the team, and she gets her own villain rivalry (with a DUDE villain :o) near the end which is pretty awesome. kinji is... perfect. i love him dearly. he’s adorable and funny and he starts out as an assassin cowboy, ends up getting adopted by all the ninningers, and has the coolest powerup ever:

how anyone can hate ninninger when it gave us THIS is beyond me. of the other two, nagi and fuuka are kind of shafted but fuuka makes up for it with an INCREDIBLE showing in the ninninger returns movie (seriously, we made our friends who dont watch ninninger watch that movie and they loved it. invented feminism tbh) while nagi has some good emotional plots near the middle of the show, although it’s mainly him supporting other members of the team. so not a perfect season in terms of giving characters equal focus but it gets a lot of hate for being overly red-focused when imo kinji, yakumo, and kasumi easily match taka in terms of focus? they also eased off the red focus a lot partway through the show and i think it was because of the complaints about taka. again, your mileage may vary. but taka never even gets a red-exclusive power-up or anything, everything is shared by the whole team so... i dunno what ppl are complaining about there.
secondly, the themes, and i think this is what makes ninninger a far stronger show than people give it credit for: ultimately, (and this is just my reading, of course) the show is about family. the main five are cousins, they’re mentored by their grandfather and taka/fuuka’s father, and it’s all about who’s going to succeed grandpa as the ‘last ninja’. but it’s also about generations and traditions, and how sometimes, parents can fuck up, and how the children of the new generation (the third generation, in this case - the grandchildren of the last ninja) can put things right where their parents messed up. and how just because things have always been done a certain way doesn’t mean they should stay that way (seriously - the whole arc where kinji officially joins the team and becomes a ninninger makes me cry because it’s all about the kids taking a stand against their grandpa and going “no we want kinji on our team and we don’t care if you won’t accept him as your student”). this also shows up later when they get their second big megazord and have to figure out a way to create zords because the old ways aren’t working for them, and then again in the final arc, when they set right grandpa’s greatest mistake and really earn their happy ending. and what they end up doing with the end shuriken and last ninja title, but i won’t spoil you too much. it’s really heartwarming though.
so i think coming it at it knowing that it’s not just a show about ninjas (and then being annoyed when we get cowboy backstory angst and random game show themed fillers although again... don’t know what people were complaining about because the fillers were ridiculously fun. but maybe i am just easily entertained.), but about family, legacy, and traditions helps a lot. i know there were complaints about how it barely felt like a family sentai because the kids were just cousins and they didn’t really seem to be that close, but i think the real family theme in ninninger revolves around kinji, and the team accepting him, and how you don’t need blood to be a family or have a place to belong. and kinji was really the center of ninninger because he was the one paralleled with grandpa and [redacted for spoilers] and he highlighted the theme of past generations vs. new generations, how the kids made their own family and their own place in the world as ninjas, and also how you don’t have to follow tradition exactly, especially if it’s stupid. you can make your own tradition and it can be just as good. and i think that was the most powerful message of ninninger and a really good message in general, especially for the kids watching.
other than that, i mean, it’s a sentai - it has villains (kyuuemon was easily the standout, the others are kind of forgettable, although magnetsu has the rivalry w/ kasumi which i loved, and one of the generals has the creepiest fucking plot twist which i won’t spoil but it was. it sure was something. pretty entertaining though. all the yokai monsters speak in puns constantly. main villain was also forgettable but some sentais are just like that, y’know.) and suits and zords and whatnot. lots of filler but i thought it was fun filler. except yakumo focus episodes those were always kind of bizarre. it has LOTS of cameos but even if you haven’t seen hurricanger/kakuranger/magiranger/whatever i think they’re still fun. the ninninger returns movie saved my goddamn life.
overall... i think the best way to binge ninninger is just to have fun with it. it’s just a fun show, y’know? some episodes are weird but you’ll get through them. it has some really strong themes that you kind of have to root through all the filler to get but i enjoyed it all. i am easy 2 please and ninninger was cute, fun, and not overtly sexist which is really all i need from a toku show honestly.

Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger Episode 4 Review
I’d just like to preface this review by thanking Over-Time for their excellent and speedy subs. You guys sure know how to make the start of my week busier. And speaking of Over-Time, I’m going to start calling Dorado Yellow Spada now that they’ve started using that name. I do like the way Sparda sounds better, but Spada actually does make sense since it’s Italian for sword, which suits the character on multiple levels. And so without further ado, let’s begin my review, where I promise not to use the word “treat” to describe the fight scenes. I’m going to use a thesaurus to look up some even more annoying words to use.
So let’s start this episode review off with a spoiler: this is by far my favorite episode of the bunch. I absolutely loved it! While it took a few episodes longer than Zyuohger (which is probably my second-favorite series right behind Magiranger) Kyuranger has at last clicked with me as a great Sentai series. Now let’s explore how this happened.
Our episode starts off with what I am forced to admit is the biggest negative of the episode, and potentially the series if things don’t go the way I want: the Kyurangers have now arrived on Earth. After three episodes of a promising space opera with exotic locations and set designs (I don’t care if they were usual Sentai haunts shot through a filter or with some weird props! They still looked cool!) we have returned to our boring old planet. And from what Xiao tells us, there are multiple Jark Matter ships parked here, each one housing a Menaster (yes I’m using that term. It’s perfectly Power Rangery and I love it) which means our Uchuu Sentai will potentially be remaining here for quite a bit. Instead of being out there. Exploring the Uchuu.
You promised me Uchuu, Toei!! I want my Uchuu!!!
*ahem* Anyway, even though the Kyurangers seem to think of Earth as being a backwater, Don Armage (remember him? The final boss who we have currently seen for a grand total of probably less than a minute out of four episodes?) shows up at the end to confirm that Earth is holding a secret. A secret he wants Eridron and Stinger to prevent the Kyurangers from discovering by any means necessary. Now I’m torn, because on one hand, this promises a new overarching plot aside from wandering the cosmos and encountering random episodic adventures. But on the other, I like wandering the cosmos! Can’t we get one space show where Earth is not the most important planet in the universe?
And back on the subject of Jark Matter, the first episode showed us that they rule their planets with an iron fist. But this is the second episode where the Kyurangers, members of an organization specifically created to fight against Jark Matter, an organization that has jackets, have walked around completely unharassed on a planet Jark Matter supposedly controls. They even go eat in a public restaurant! Raptor goes out and buys PEACHES!! What is security doing!? No wonder Don Armage always seems to be in a bad mood. Eridron is his only subordinate who seems to know how to do his job! But he’s effectively ruined that working relationship by mind-blasting him via hologram and so: Don Armage is the saddest villain in Sentai history.
Okay, that’s enough of eating our vegetables. Now let’s dig in to the nice juicy steak: what’s good?
Literally everything else!
Okay, okay, you came here for tl;dr. Let’s get verbose.
First off: Raptor. Oh my goodness gracious Raptor! In the first episode I liked her, in the second episode I could see her potentially rising to be near the top of my favorite Kyuranger list, in the third episode I loved her, and today it looks like Makito, Ryuuji, and Hyde are going to have company at the top of my favorite Sentai heroes of all-time list. This week we saw a new adorable side to Raptor, having her be a dreamer, a self-insert fanfic writer, and a squealing closet fangirl of the Kyurangers. Those three alone were enough to make me love her. But noooo, Toei just had to make her a stone cold badass! To those of you who were like me and worried that Raptor was getting the shaft in having her weapon just be the handle that everyone else got, I am pleased to inform you that the Kyu Shot is amazing and Raptor uses it to great effect, firmly cementing herself as the team’s sniper.
In her debut fight she shows off exceptional courage, excellent aim, and blinding speed. And that’s before she quite literally spreads her wings and takes off. One of the best parts of Zyuohger was the amazing flight scenes done for Yamato. Well it looks like the excellence of those scenes has now been surpassed by the amazing choreography and special effects of Aquila Pink, who moves with speed and maneuverability that Yamato never showed. It’s one of many things that made her debut fight a true delicacy for the senses. The best part of all this? She’s still an amazing fighter who no one should ever mess with, but she never once stops being adorable or funny. Whether she’s squealing with excitement that her attack actually hit, or trying to do a dramatic pose in her Voyager’s cockpit and accidentally smacking her head, Raptor definitely kept me entertained. I don’t for one second question that she deserves to be on the team, but she still makes me laugh, which makes her seem very human.
And to the surprise of who I hope is no one, Xiao continues to be the best Sentai mentor ever. From his explanation of only sending a five-man team being because of “the budget”, to his wacky dancing (with Raptor just barely humoring him through it all), Xiao continues to entertain. Not only that, but my biggest concern from last week was that his being aloof in the face of crisis ran the risk of getting old. The show surprised me by addressing this concern early on by making his goofy attitude a mask for actual brilliance. Because of a silly decision he made at the beginning of the episode, the Kyurangers ended up with their eighth member. And as Naga suspects, this probably isn’t the happy accident everyone assumes, proving that there’s a lot more going on in Xiao’s head than we assume. Unfortunately, it does lend some credibility to the current fan theory that Xiao might actually be Don Armage. I have mixed feelings about this theory. On one hand, I would love for it to not be true because I love Xiao and want him to stay as a hero. On the other hand, if Xiao does turn out to be Armage, then he would have shattered my expectations and become one of the most interesting and unique Sentai villains ever.
And now let’s move on to Lucky, who I am now willing to say is someone who I no longer hate.
Gaaaaaaah, that hurt to say. But it’s true.
Ever since last week, Lucky has really been coming into his own as a leader. From the way he stood up to what has to be the stupidest parents I have ever seen in a Toku series (probably right behind that lady from Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue who said that there was no such thing as monsters), to the way he supported Raptor when no one else would, Lucky has become a character worth liking. I especially find his motivation of wanting to save the universe very refreshing. I find that certain Sentai and Rider series (Lookin’ at you Go-Busters, even though I love you) and a great deal of Japanese entertainment in general have a bad habit of treating the motivation of wanting to save the world just because it’s the right thing to do as not being good enough. This is a sentiment I vehemently and angrily disagree with. Call me crazy, but I don’t want the people protecting me from evil monster/aliens/robots every week to be saving my life just because it happens to coincide with their larger goals.
If I had to nitpick one bad thing about Lucky, it was about how he decided to help Raptor’s dream come true. All four of his teammates told him that Raptor fighting was a bad idea for, and I hate to admit it, reasons that were perfectly logical. Lucky’s response to this was to say “this is going nowhere”, leave the conversation, grab Raptor and do what he wanted anyway. That’s not called being a team player, that’s called being a jerk. Yes he was right, but what if he wasn’t? What if Raptor got destroyed?
I dunno, it wasn’t enough to ruin Lucky or the episode for me, but it still bugged me. And so did Spada’s jerkish attitude in this episode. Don’t get me wrong, Spada is still one of my favorite characters in this show, and I do think he was being harsh to Raptor for the right reasons (she’s his friend and he doesn’t want to see her get hurt in a fight she was literally not created for), but I think those reasons could have been expressed better and Spada ran the risk of becoming a strawman. Still, he was saved by immediately supporting Raptor the second he realized how harsh he was being, and having her back once she transformed. So yes, I still love Spada, and I still ship him with Raptor far more than I probably should.
All in all, aside from the minor nitpicks at the start of this review, this was an excellent episode with what I feel was the least amount of pacing issues. All characters got what I felt was equal screentime, even Balance and Naga who were not selected to be part of the away team. My only complaint in that regard is that Garu has yet to have much of a focus outside of some great one-off lines (his line about not wanting to see a crewmember get hurt was, again, barely a sentence and still one of my favorite parts of the episode) and it looks like that won’t be fixed next week. Because next week is a Stinger episode and I am praying to whoever will listen that I start to like him. And as a bonus, it looks like Kamen Rider Zangetsu will be guest starring as Stinger’s older brother Scorpio. Eesh, good luck with the inevitable comments about that, Over-Time.
