There are books that cover sweeping historical eras with factual accuracy and there are books that do so as masterpieces. This is neither.
This book purports to be one thing, in reality is a polemic aimed at arguing that there were and are ways to achieve the goals of the "Project for the New American Century" and uses 1820s Victorian cliches in substitute for factual accuracy. It fails multiple levels of chronology and dating, it fails at an accurate level of understanding events and how and why things happened, it willfully omits major aspects of Middle Eastern history in a manner that produce a complete distortion of events.
Its only merit is that this is a rare US military historian writing about the military history of the Middle East who's not high on the IDF as a cultural equivalent of Viagra by proxy and as such lambasts it for arrogance and for mistaking easy victories over barely cohesive forces treated as such and not the David vs Goliath myth. Does this counterbalance every single other failure?
Not a chance in Hell, even if it's the one rose in the pile of manure.

Not Up For Interpretation - An Essay On Nonbinary - Erasure
(Trigger Warning: Misgendering, Transphobia, Nonbinary-phobia)
If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know this was a long time coming. I’ve made several posts about my frustrations concerning this topic and how much it hurt me just how socially accepted erasing an entire identity still is. While representation marches on and things have become better for nonbinary people as a whole, we still battle with a lot of prejudice - both intentional and unintentional.
In this essay, I want to discuss just how our identities are being erased almost daily, why that is harmful and hurtful and what we all can do to change that.

1. What Does Non-binary Mean?
Non-binary is actually an umbrella term. It includes pretty much every gender-identity that’s neither one or the other so to speak, for example, agender.
Agender means feeling detachment from the gender spectrum in general. If you’re agender, you most likely feel a distance to the concept of gender as a whole, that it doesn’t define you as a person.
There are many identities that classify under non-binary: There’s gender-fluid (you feel you have a gender, but it’s not one gender specifically and can change), demi-gender (identifying as a gender partially, but not completely) and many others.
Sometimes, multiple non-binary identities can mix and match.
Most non-binary people use they/them pronouns, but like with so many things, it varies.
Some nonbinary-people (like me) go by two pairs of pronouns. I go by both she/her and they/them, because it’s what feels most comfortable at the moment. But who knows, maybe in the future I’ll switch to they/them exclusively or expand to he/him.
There is no one defining non-binary experience. Nb-people are just as varied and different as binary people, who go by one specific gender.
There are non-binary people who choose to go solely by she/her or he/him and that’s okay too. It doesn’t make them any more or less non-binary and their identity is still valid.
If your head’s buzzing a bit by now: That’s okay. It’s a complicated topic and no one expects you to understand all of it in one chapter of one essay.
Just know this: If a person identifies as non-binary, you should respect their decision and use the pronouns they go with.
It’s extremely hurtful to refer to someone who already told you that they use they/them pronouns with she/her or he/him, or use they/them to refer to a person who uses she/her.
Think about it like using a trans-person’s deadname: It’s rude, it’s harmful and it shows complete disrespect for the person.
Non-binary people have existed for a very long time. The concept isn’t new. The idea that there are only two genders, with every other identity being an aberration to the norm, is largely a western idea, spread through colonialism.
The Native American people use “Two-Spirit” to describe someone who identifies neither as a man nor a woman. The term itself is relatively new, but the concept of a third gender is deeply rooted in many Native American cultures.
(Author’s Note: If you are not Native American, please do not use it. That’s cultural appropriation.)
In India, the existence of a third gender has always been acknowledged and there are many terms specifically for people who don’t identify with the gender that was assigned to them at birth.

2. Non-binary Representation In Media
The representation of non-binary people in mainstream media hasn’t been... great, to put it mildly.
Representation, as we all know, is important.
Not only does it give minorities a chance to see themselves in media and feel heard and acknowledged. It also normalizes them.
For example, seeing a black Disney-princess was a huge deal for many black little girls, because they could finally say there was someone there who looked like them. They could see that being white wasn’t a necessity to be a Disney princess.
Seeing a canonically LGBT+ character in a children’s show teaches kids that love is love, no matter what gender you’re attracted to. At the same time, older LGBT+ viewers will see themselves validated and heard in a movie that features on-screen LGBT+ heroes.
There’s been some huge steps in the right direction in the last few years representation-wise.
Not only do we have more LGBT+ protagonists and characters in general, we’ve also begun to question and call out harmful or bigoted portrayals of the community in media, such as “Bury Your Gays” or the “Depraved Homosexual”.
With that being said: Let’s take a look at how Non-binary representation holds up in comparison, shall we?

This is Double Trouble, from the children’s show “She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power”.
They identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns. They’re also  a slimy, duplicitous lizard-person who can change their shape at will.
Um, yeah.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Did I mention they’re also the only non-binary character in the entire show? And that they’re working with a genocidal dictator in most of the episodes they’re in?
Yikes.
Let’s look at another example.

These three (in order of appearance) are Stevonnie, Smoky Quartz and Shep. Three characters appearing in the kid’s show “Steven Universe” and it’s epilogue series “Steven Universe: Future”.
All of them identify as non-binary and use they/them as pronouns.
Stevonnie and Smoky Quartz are the result of a boy and a girl being fused together through weird alien magic.
Shep is a regular human, but they only appeared in one episode. In an epilogue series that only hardcore fans actually watched.
Well, I mean...
One out of three isn’t that bad, right?
Maybe we should pick an example from a series for older viewers.

Say hello to Doppelganger, a non-binary superhuman who goes by they/them, from the Amazon-series “The Boys”.
They’re working for a corrupt superhero-agency and use their power of shape-shifting to trick people who pose a threat to said agency into having sex with them. And then blackmail those people with footage of said sex.
....
Do I even need to say it?
If you’ve paid attention during the listing of these examples, you might have noticed a theme.
Namely that characters canonically identifying as non-binary are either
supernatural in some way, shape or form,
barely have a presence in the piece of media they’re in,
both.
Blink-and-you-miss-it-manner of representation aside, the majority of these characters fall squarely under what we call “Othering”.
“Othering” describes the practice of portraying minorities as supernatural creatures or otherwise inhuman. Or to say it bluntly: As “The Other”.
“Othering” is a pretty heinous method. Not only does it portray minorities as inherently abnormal and “different in a bad way”. It also goes directly against what representation is actually for: Normalizing.
As a general rule of thumb: If your piece of media has humans in it, but the only representation of non-white, non-straight people are explicitly inhuman... yeah, that’s bad.
So is there absolutely no positive representation for us out there?
Not quite.
As rare as human non-binary characters in media are to find, they do exist.

It’s been confirmed by the devs and the voice actress that they’re non-binary.

As my little demonstration here showed, non-binary representation in media is rare. Good non-binary representation is even rarer.
Which is why those small examples of genuinely good representation are so important to the Non-binary community!
It’s hard enough to have to prove you exist. It’s even harder to prove your existence is not abnormal or unnatural.

3. So What’s The Problem?
The problem, as is the case with so many things in the world, is prejudice.
Actually, that’s not true.
There’s not a problem, there are multiple problems. And their names are prejudice, ignorance and bigotry.
Remember how I said human non-binary representation is rare?
Yeah, very often media-fans don’t help.
Let’s take for example, the aforementioned Frisk and Chara from “Undertale”.
Despite the game explicitly using they/them to refer to both characters multiple times, the majority of players somehow got it into their heads that Frisk’s and Chara’s gender was “up for interpretation”.
There is a huge amount of fan art straight-up misgendering both characters and portraying them as binary and using only he/him or she/her pronouns.
The most egregious examples are two massively popular fan-animated web shows: “Glitchtale”, by Camila Cuevas and “Underverse” by Jael Peñaloza.
Both series are very beloved by the Undertale-fanbase and even outside of it. Meaning for many people, those two shows might be their first introduction to “Undertale” and it’s two non-binary human characters.
Take a wild guess what both Camila and Jael did with Frisk and Chara.

This... this isn’t okay.
Not only do both of these pieces of fan-art misgender two non-binary characters, the creators knew beforehand that Frisk and Chara use they/them-pronouns, but made the conscious choice to ignore that.
To be fair, in a video discussing “Underverse”, Jael said that only X-Tale Frisk and Chara, the characters you see in the Underverse-examples above, are male, while the characters Frisk and Chara from the main game remained non-binary and used they/them (time-stamp 10:34).
Still, that doesn’t erase the fact that Jael made up alternate versions of two non-binary characters specifically to turn them male. Or that, while addressing the issue, Jael was incredibly dismissive and even mocked the people who felt hurt by her turning two non-binary characters male. Jael also went on to make a fairly non-binary-phobic joke in the video, in which she equated gender identities beyond male and female to identifying as an object.
Jael (translated): “I don’t care if people say the original Frisk and Chara are male, female, helicopters, chairs, dogs or cats, buildings, clouds...”
That’s actually a very common joke among transphobes, if not to say the transphobe-joke:
“Oh, you identify as X? Well then I identify as an attack helicopter!”
If you’re trans, chances are you’ve heard this one, or a variation of it, a million times before.
I certainly have.
I didn’t laugh then and I’m not laughing now.
(Author’s note: I might be angry at both of them for what they did, but I do not, under any circumstances, support the harassment of creators. If you’re thinking about sending either Jael or Camila hate-mail - don’t. It won’t help.)
Jael’s reaction is sadly common in the Undertale fandom. Anyone speaking up against Chara’s and Frisk’s identity being erased is immediately bludgeoned with the “up for interpretation”-argument, despite that not once being the case in the game.
And even with people who do it right and portray Frisk and Chara as they/them, you’ll have dozens of commenters swarming the work with sentences among the lines of “Oh but I think Frisk is a boy/girl! And Chara is a girl/boy!”
By the way, this kind of thing only happens to Frisk and Chara.
Every other character in “Undertale” is referred to and portrayed with their proper pronouns of she/her or he/him.
But not the characters who go by they/them.
Their gender is “up for interpretation”.
Because obviously, their identity couldn’t possibly be canonically non-binary.
Sadly, Frisk and Chara are not alone in this.
Remember Bloodhound?
And how I said they’d been confirmed as non-binary and using they/them pronouns by both the creators and the voice actress?
It seems for many players, that too translated to “up for interpretation”.

So, let me get this straight:
If a character, even a player character, uses she/her or he/him, you can accept it, no questions asked.
But when a character uses they/them, suddenly their identity and gender are “up for interpretation”?
This attitude is also widely prevalent in real life.
Many languages only include pronouns for men and women, with no third option available. Non-binary people are often forced to make up their own terms, because their language doesn’t provide one.
Non-binary people often don’t fit within other people’s ideas of gender, so they get excluded altogether. Worse, non-binary people are often the victims of misgendering, denial of their identity or even straight-up violence when coming out.
People will often tell us that we look like a certain gender, so we should only use one set of gendered pronouns. Never mind that that’s not what we want. Never mind that that’s not who we are.
Non-binary people are also largely omitted from legal documentation and studies. We cannot identify as non-binary at our workplace, because using they/them pronouns is considered “unprofessional”. We don’t have our own bathrooms like men and women do. Our gender is seen as less valid than male and female, so even that basic thing is denied to us. I’ve had to use the women’s restroom my entire life, because if I go into a male restroom, I’ll be yelled at or made fun off or simply get told I took the wrong door. It’s extremely uncomfortable for me and I wish I didn’t have to do it.
And since non-binary people aren’t seen as “real transgender-people”, we often don’t receive the medical care we need. This often renders us unable to feel good within our bodies, because the treatment and help we get is wildly inadequate.
It’s especially horrible for intersex people (people who are born with sex characteristics that don’t fit solely into the male/female category) who are often forced to change their bodies to fit within the male/female gender binary.
And you better believe each of those problems is increased ten-fold for non-binary people of color.
We are ignored and dismissed as “confused”, because of who we are.
Representation is a way for Non-binary people to show the world they exist, that they’re here and that they too have stories to tell.
But how can we, when every character that represents us is either othered, barely there or gets taken away from us?
We are not “up for interpretation”.
Neither are the characters in media who share our identity.
And it’s time to stop pretending we ever were.

4. How Do We Fix It?
Well, first things first: Stop acting like we don’t exist.
And kindly stop other people from doing it too.
We are a part of the LGBT+ community and we deserve to be acknowledged, no matter what our pronouns are.
Address non-binary people with the right pronouns. Don’t argue with them about their identity, don’t comment on how much you think they look like a boy or a girl. Just accept them and be respectful.
If a non-binary person tells you they have two sets of pronouns, for example he/him and they/them, don’t just use one set of pronouns. That can come off as disingenuous. Alternate between the pronouns, don’t leave one or the other out. It’ll probably be hard at first, but if you keep it up, you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.
If you’re witnessing someone harass a non-binary person over their identity, step in and help them.
And please, don’t partake in non-binary erasure in media fandoms.
Don’t misgender non-binary characters, don’t “speculate” on what you think their gender might be. You already know their gender and it’s non-binary. It costs exactly 0 $ to be a decent human being and accept that.
Support Non-Binary people by educating yourself about them and helping to normalize and integrate their identity.

Pregame: Racing Louisville vs. OL Reign (September 4)
Background and Momentum:
Louisville
Although Louisville has had a surprisingly strong season for an expansion team, and particularly in comparison to how they were expected to do following the results of their expansion draft, they have had a fairly weak couple of months, with only one league win since the end of June, and will be looking to turn things around here.
Louisville had been fairly close to the mid-table pack, competing for the last few playoff spots, but after a two consecutive losses, they have fallen further from the pack and would need to pick up the majority of the remaining points available to them if they want to make a push for one of those spots. They did win the Women's Cup in August, which was a huge achievement for the expansion side.
This week, Louisville had some an off-field shake-up, with the club announcing on Tuesday that their coach, Christy Holly, had been fired for cause. The team did not go into detail over what the cause was, or how significantly it had affected the players in recent weeks or in the long term. The team will be coached this week by interim head coach Mario Sanchez, who has been working with the club's youth team. I'm not sure whether Sanchez has been in the senior women's team setup before this, or how much experience he has working with these players overall. Given how things tend to go for teams immediately following coaching changes, I don't think there would be any shame for Louisville in losing this match, although it would be a disappointment since every point is a must-win for them at this point in the season.
They may also be forced to play this match without Yuki Nagasato, one of their most senior players, who has been a solid starting player for them throughout the season.
Reign
The Reign has a somewhat slow start to their season, but have come on hot since a coaching turnover earlier in the season - under assistant coach Sam Laity and current head coach Laura Harvey, the team has come together and pulled off some very strong results.
The Reign's last match was a 1-0 midweek win against the Dash, and before that was a 2-1 win against top-of-the-table Portland Thorns. Those results have placed the Reign in a tie for second place in the table, so they will be coming into this game with some confidence.
The international loaned players have found their footing in the team and the league. The Reign also have their Olympians back in full now - Angelina, Quinn, Rose Lavelle, and Megan Rapinoe - so the lineup will be stacked with international stars, particularly in the attack. However, they didn't maintain a clean sheet at all in the month of August, and there were a few close calls in their mid-week game against the Dash (their first game of September), so keep an eye on the defensive line.
Although back from the Olympics, Megan Rapinoe is on the injured list for this week, so the Reign will have to do without her - however, even with her absence, Laura Harvey will have the good kind of headache to deal with in terms of determining which attacking players to start.
Head-to-Head
This is only the second meeting between these two teams - the Reign won the first meeting, 2-0.

Warm-ish Takes and Full Disclosure:
The Reign have created some separation between themselves and the rest of the pack, moving into a fairly comfortable third place. They will want to solidify that with a win here against a weaker team, but they did give KC their first win of the season late this summer, so they will want to be careful not to drop further points to teams lower in the standings.
Louisville, on the other hand, will want to make a statement here, that they are better than what was expected of them, and that they are better without their previous coach.
OL Reign played mid-week, with some rotation from what their starting lineup seems to be. There may be some more rotation tonight, but I think tonight's lineup will indicate what they expect to put out going forward. Their biggest question so far has been what to do with Dzenifer Marozsan, and I'm honestly still not sure where she fits in this lineup, although I wouldn't be surprised to see her either as a central forward player here in place of Balcer (who I truly think is the future), or in place of either Fishlock or Lavelle.
Both teams have something of an imbalance between their attacking players and their defending players - both teams have brought in several international players for their attacking ranks, but haven't had as much success building up their defense. OL Reign's defense is just-alright, particularly when compared to their attack, and Racing has some defensive stars, but also some serious weak areas. I would expect to see a few goals, as well as a couple of incredible saves in this match.

COVID Week 13 - NFC East
COVID, COVID, COVID...
Miraculously, NFL protocols have held and, to this point, all games have been played with few postponements. Notably, Cam Newton’s comeback season with the Patriots started off well, until it went into a skid after missing a couple of games with COVID. I like Cam Newton. He’s an amazing athlete. Judgement, not so much. His drop off after the illness may be because of lasting effects we don’t yet understand. Lamar Jackson, coming off one of the most awesome regular seasons in the history of the league, also missed a game with a major outbreak that sidelined many Ravens starters. 
But this post is about the NFC East (AFC East up next). You would expect teams to struggle with new head coaches, in particular with an irregular and short pre-season. And, you would be correct. For its past sins, the NFC East has three new HCs in Mike McCarthy, “Riverboat” Ron Rivera, and Joe Judge. You would also expect the most experienced HCs to do better. And, you would be wrong. 
The Cowboys have so much talent, especially on offense, it’s almost frightening. The D has it’s share of stars in Demarcus Lawrence, Jaylon Smith, Vander Esch, the injury prone Sean Lee, and rookie Trevon Diggs, to name a few. Well, they would be frightening if not for the fact that they can’t stop the run, struggle against the deep ball, can’t throw the ball much, and my favorite NFL running back Zeke Elliot...let’s just say he’s the most highly overpaid player in the NFL. Bucking the trend, Jerry Jones coughed up big bucks for Elliot, only to see his production drop with attrition in the O-line, and quibbled with his QB. Poor Dak Prescott. We all with him well and a speedy recovery, which looks on track. 
Washington won in HC roulette this offseason, picking up Ron Rivera after a dysfunctional, unceremonious departure from Carolina. After a to be expected rough start, Rivera seems to have turned his new team in the right direction. After ditching Dwayne Haskins (15th overall pick in 2019), Rivera landed on comeback player of the year, Alex Smith. He suffered a grueling injury in 2018, the same injury that ended Joe Theismann’s career on the same field 33 years later to the date. His struggle to come back is a testament to willpower, perseverance, an character. Alex also implemented a game plan that unseated the 11-win, undefeated Pittsburg Steelers. THAT is a statement win if I’ve ever seen one, and Washington is second in the conference at 5-7. It is still the NFC East after all.
That brings us to rookie head coach Joe Judge and the New York football Giants. Four straight wins and their own statement win over the Seahawks, Patrick Graham’s very young defense is firing on all cylinders. The Giants held Seattle to just 12 points with Russel Wilson cookin’ along side sensation DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The win is particularly impressive with Daniel Jones sidelined and backup Colt McCoy getting the start and his first win since 2016. The Giants sit majestically on top of the NFC East, ready to do some damage in the playoffs, with an impressive 5-7 record...and the tie break over Washington. It’s time to pop the champagne, or at least place that bottle of Andre on ice. 
That brings me to the beloved Philadelphia Eagles, at home in the city of brotherly love, with an established and successful coaching staff under Doug Pederson and DC Jim Schwarz. I love football, and I don’t hate any NFL team or their fans. And, I love Carson Wenz. So much so that I wished the Rams had picked him number one overall, recognizing that the Eagles would break him. I’ve always said that the Eagles are the only NFL team anyone is allowed to hate, because their own fans hate the team more than you possibly could. 
This brings me to one story in particular, and there are plenty of others I could tell. Last January, I was skiing in Colorado when I sat down on a lift with a lovely women my age and her two children in their early teens, or so I thought. A playoff Sunday, I asked whether everyone was as excited about the games as I was. The lady answered politely that her Broncos were out and she wouldn’t be watching. While puzzling over her response unable to comprehend why that would matter, she asked me about my team. I answered just as politely that I was a football fan in general, but that the Giants had a special place in my heart. At that point the boy on the lift with us chimed in with “Eli Manning sucks!” I asked which QB the boy preferred, already knowing what the response would be: “Carson Wenz!” I asked the youth politely, whether he was an Eagles fan, to which he responded in the affirmative. I informed the boy that Eli Manning had twice as many Super Bowl MVPs as his franchise had Super Bowl victories. I also noted that Carson Wenz had spent considerable time on the sidelines due to injury and that this may not bode well for his career. The boy simply responded that Eli Manning still sucked. I confirmed with the lady that these were in fact not her children, and explained to her that Eagles fans were particularly difficult. She chuckled, as I said to her: “watch this.” The ensuing dialogue went as follows:
Me: What do you think of Andy Reid?
Andy Reid SUCKS!
You do realize that Andy Reid is the winningest head coach in Eagles history and has resurrected the Chiefs. What do you think of Donovan McNabb?
Donovan McNabb SUCKS!
You do realize that Donovan McNabb is the winningest QB in your franchise history. What to you think of DeSean Jackson?
DeSean Jackson SUCKS! (apparently unable to make a statement without pronouncing that whatever he was talking about SUCKED)
I turned to the wonderfully patient lady sitting next to me and said “you see?”
She turned to the young Eagles fan and asked his age. 14 was the answer. At which point she turned to me and pronounced “they start ‘em out young, don’t they? True story. 
Not even 12 months later, Eagles fans are calling the Wenz pick the worst ever and screaming for rookie Jalen Hurst, who lead a number of drives on Sunday. Never mind an offensive line that has seen more changes this season than the Trump cabinet. Never mind the ensuing non-existent running game and pass protection. Never mind a receiving corps that has dropped more balls than the Trump cabinet. Wenz is at fault for everything. One thing is true: the Eagles truly do suck.
Not as analytical as I am normally, but more humorous in these COVID times.

W. C. Handy

William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a composer and musician who referred to himself as the Father of the Blues. Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States. One of many musicians who played the distinctively American blues music, Handy did not create the blues genre but was the first to publish music in the blues form, thereby taking the blues from a regional music style (Delta blues) with a limited audience to a new level of popularity.
Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.
Early life
Handy was born in Florence, Alabama, the son of Elizabeth Brewer and Charles Barnard Handy. His father was the pastor of a small church in Guntersville, a small town in northeast central Alabama. Handy wrote in his 1941 autobiography, Father of the Blues, that he was born in a log cabin built by his grandfather William Wise Handy, who became an African Methodist Episcopal minister after the Emancipation Proclamation. The log cabin of Handy's birth has been preserved near downtown Florence.
Handy's father believed that musical instruments were tools of the devil. Without his parents' permission, Handy bought his first guitar, which he had seen in a local shop window and secretly saved for by picking berries and nuts and making lye soap. Upon seeing the guitar, his father asked him, "What possessed you to bring a sinful thing like that into our Christian home?" and ordered him to "take it back where it came from", but he also arranged for his son to take organ lessons. The organ lessons did not last long, but Handy moved on to learn to play the cornet. He joined a local band as a teenager, but he kept this fact a secret from his parents. He purchased a cornet from a fellow band member and spent every free minute practicing it.
While growing up, he apprenticed in carpentry, shoemaking, and plastering. He was deeply religious. His musical style was influenced by the church music he sang and played in his youth and by the sounds of nature. He cited as inspiration the "whippoorwills, bats and hoot owls and their outlandish noises", Cypress Creek washing on the fringes of the woodland, and "the music of every songbird and all the symphonies of their unpremeditated art".
He worked on a "shovel brigade" at the McNabb furnace and described the music made by the workers as they beat shovels, altering the tone while thrusting and withdrawing the metal part against the iron buggies to pass the time while waiting for the overfilled furnace to digest its ore. He called the sound "better to us than the music of a martial drum corps, and our rhythms were far more complicated." He wrote, "Southern Negroes sang about everything...They accompany themselves on anything from which they can extract a musical sound or rhythmical effect." He would later reflect, "In this way, and from these materials, they set the mood for what we now call blues".
Career
In September 1892, Handy travelled to Birmingham, Alabama, to take a teaching exam. He passed it easily and gained a teaching job at the Teachers Agriculture and Mechanical College (the current-day Alabama A&M University) in Normal, then an independent community near Huntsville. Learning that it paid poorly, he quit the position and found employment at a pipe works plant in nearby Bessemer.
In his time off from his job, he organized a small string orchestra and taught musicians how to read music. He later organized the Lauzetta Quartet. When the group read about the upcoming World's Fair in Chicago, they decided to attend. To pay their way, they performed odd jobs along the way. They arrived in Chicago only to learn that the World's Fair had been postponed for a year. Next they headed to St. Louis, Missouri, but found no work.
After the quartet disbanded, Handy went to Evansville, Indiana. He played the cornet in the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. In Evansville, he joined a successful band that performed throughout neighboring cities and states. His musical endeavors were varied: he sang first tenor in a minstrel show, worked as a band director, choral director, cornetist, and trumpeter. At the age of 23, he became the bandmaster of Mahara's Colored Minstrels.
In a three-year tour they traveled to Chicago, throughout Texas and Oklahoma to Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida, and on to Cuba, Mexico and Canada. Handy was paid a salary of $6 per week. Returning from Cuba the band traveled north through Alabama, where they stopped to perform in Huntsville. Weary of life on the road, he and his wife, Elizabeth, stayed with relatives in his nearby hometown of Florence.
In 1896, while performing at a barbecue in Henderson, Kentucky, Handy met Elizabeth Price. They married on July 19, 1896. She gave birth to Lucille, the first of their six children, on June 29, 1900, after they had settled in Florence.
Around that time, William Hooper Councill, the president of what had become the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes (the same college Handy had refused to teach at in 1892 due to low pay), hired Handy to teach music. He became a faculty member in September 1900 and taught through much of 1902. He was disheartened to discover that the college emphasized teaching European music considered to be "classical". He felt he was underpaid and could make more money touring with a minstrel group.
In 1902 Handy traveled throughout Mississippi, listening to various styles of popular black music. The state was mostly rural and music was part of the culture, especially in cotton plantations in the Mississippi Delta. Musicians usually played guitar or banjo or, to a much lesser extent, piano. Handy's remarkable memory enabled him to recall and transcribe the music he heard in his travels.
After a dispute with AAMC President Councill, Handy resigned his teaching position to return to the Mahara Minstrels and tour the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. In 1903 he became the director of a black band organized by the Knights of Pythias in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Handy and his family lived there for six years. In 1903, while waiting for a train in Tutwiler, in the Mississippi Delta, Handy had the following experience:
A lean loose-jointed Negro had commenced plunking a guitar beside me while I slept...As he played, he pressed a knife on the strings of the guitar in a manner popularized by Hawaiian guitarists who used steel bars...The singer repeated the line three times, accompanying himself on the guitar with the weirdest music I had ever heard.
About 1905, while playing a dance in Cleveland, Mississippi, Handy was given a note asking for "our native music". He played an old-time Southern melody but was asked if a local colored band could play a few numbers. Three young men with a battered guitar, mandolin, and a worn-out bass walked onto the stage. Research by Elliott Hurwitt for the Mississippi Blues Trail identified the leader of the band in Cleveland as Prince McCoy.
They struck up one of those over and over strains that seem to have no beginning and certainly no ending at all. The strumming attained a disturbing monotony, but on and on it went, a kind of stuff associated with [sugar] cane rows and levee camps. Thump-thump-thump went their feet on the floor. It was not really annoying or unpleasant. Perhaps "haunting" is the better word.
Handy noted square dancing by Mississippi blacks with "one of their own calling the figures, and crooning all of his calls in the key of G." He remembered this when deciding on the key of "Saint Louis Blues". "It was the memory of that old gent who called figures for the Kentucky breakdown—the one who everlastingly pitched his tones in the key of G and moaned the calls like a presiding elder preaching at a revival meeting. Ah, there was my key—I'd do the song in G. In describing "blind singers and footloose bards" around Clarksdale, Handy wrote, "surrounded by crowds of country folks, they would pour their hearts out in song...They earned their living by selling their own songs — "ballets," as they called them — and I'm ready to say in their behalf that seldom did their creations lack imagination.
In 1909 Handy and his band moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where they played in clubs on Beale Street. "The Memphis Blues" was a campaign song written for Edward Crump, a Democrat Memphis mayoral candidate in the 1909 election and political boss. The other candidates also employed Black musicians for their campaigns. Handy later rewrote the tune and changed its name from "Mr. Crump" to "Memphis Blues." The 1912 publication of the sheet music of "The Memphis Blues" introduced his style of 12-bar blues; it was credited as the inspiration for the foxtrot by Vernon and Irene Castle, a New York dance team. Handy sold the rights to the song for $100. By 1914, when he was 40, he had established his musical style, his popularity had greatly increased, and he was a prolific composer. Handy wrote about using folk songs:
The primitive southern Negro, as he sang, was sure to bear down on the third and seventh tone of the scale, slurring between major and minor. Whether in the cotton field of the Delta or on the Levee up St. Louis way, it was always the same. Till then, however, I had never heard this slur used by a more sophisticated Negro, or by any white man. I tried to convey this effect...by introducing flat thirds and sevenths (now called blue notes) into my song, although its prevailing key was major...and I carried this device into my melody as well...This was a distinct departure, but as it turned out, it touched the spot.
The three-line structure I employed in my lyric was suggested by a song I heard Phil Jones sing in Evansville ... While I took the three-line stanza as a model for my lyric, I found its repetition too monotonous...Consequently I adopted the style of making a statement, repeating the statement in the second line, and then telling in the third line why the statement was made.
Regarding the "three-chord basic harmonic structure" of the blues, Handy wrote that the "(tonic, subdominant, dominant seventh) was that already used by Negro roustabouts, honky-tonk piano players, wanderers and others of the underprivileged but undaunted class from Missouri to the Gulf, and had become a common medium through which any such individual might express his personal feeling in a sort of musical soliloquy." He noted, "In the folk blues the singer fills up occasional gaps with words like 'Oh, lawdy' or 'Oh, baby' and the like. This meant that in writing a melody to be sung in the blues manner one would have to provide gaps or waits."
Writing about the first time "Saint Louis Blues" was played, in 1914, Handy said,
The one-step and other dances had been done to the tempo of Memphis Blues. ... When St Louis Blues was written the tango was in vogue. I tricked the dancers by arranging a tango introduction, breaking abruptly into a low-down blues. My eyes swept the floor anxiously, then suddenly I saw lightning strike. The dancers seemed electrified. Something within them came suddenly to life. An instinct that wanted so much to live, to fling its arms to spread joy, took them by the heels.
His published musical works were groundbreaking because of his ethnicity. In 1912, he met Harry Pace at the Solvent Savings Bank in Memphis. Pace was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Atlanta University and a student of W. E. B. Du Bois. By the time of their meeting, Pace had already demonstrated a strong understanding of business. He earned his reputation by saving failing businesses. Handy liked him, and Pace later became the manager of Pace and Handy Sheet Music.
While in New York City, Handy wrote:
I was under the impression that these Negro musicians would jump at the chance to patronize one of their own publishers. They didn't...The Negro musicians simply played the hits of the day...They followed the parade. Many white bands and orchestra leaders, on the other hand, were on the alert for novelties. They were therefore the ones most ready to introduce our numbers. Negro vaudeville artists...wanted songs that would not conflict with white acts on the bill. The result was that these performers became our most effective pluggers.
In 1917, he and his publishing business moved to New York City, where he had offices in the Gaiety Theatre office building in Times Square. By the end of that year, his most successful songs had been published: "Memphis Blues", "Beale Street Blues", and "Saint Louis Blues". That year the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, a white New Orleans jazz ensemble, had recorded the first jazz record, introducing the style to a wide segment of the American public. Handy had little fondness for jazz, but bands dove into his repertoire with enthusiasm, making many of them jazz standards.
Handy encouraged performers such as Al Bernard, "a young white man" with a "soft Southern accent" who "could sing all my Blues". He sent Bernard to Thomas Edison to be recorded, which resulted in "an impressive series of successes for the young artist, successes in which we proudly shared." Handy also published "Shake Rattle and Roll" and "Saxophone Blues", both written by Bernard. "Two young white ladies from Selma, Alabama (Madelyn Sheppard and Annelu Burns) contributed the songs "Pickaninny Rose" and "O Saroo", with the music published by Handy's company. These numbers, plus our blues, gave us a reputation as publishers of Negro music."
Expecting to make only "another hundred or so" of "Yellow Dog Blues" (originally entitled "Yellow Dog Rag"), Handy signed a deal with the Victor company. The Joe Smith recording of this song in 1919 became the best-selling recording of Handy's music to date.
Handy tried to interest black women singers in his music but was unsuccessful. In 1920 Perry Bradford persuaded Mamie Smith to record two of his non-blues songs ("That Thing Called Love" and "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down") that were published by Handy and accompanied by a white band. When Bradford's "Crazy Blues" became a hit as recorded by Smith, black blues singers became popular. Handy's business began to decrease because of the competition.
In 1920 Pace amicably dissolved his partnership with Handy, with whom he also collaborated as lyricist. Pace formed Pace Phonograph Company and Black Swan Records and many of the employees went with him. Handy continued to operate the publishing company as a family-owned business. He published works of other black composers as well as his own, which included more than 150 sacred compositions and folk song arrangements and about 60 blues compositions. In the 1920s, he founded the Handy Record Company in New York City; while this label released no records, Handy organized recording sessions with it, and some of those recordings were eventually released on Paramount Records and Black Swan Records. So successful was "Saint Louis Blues" that in 1929 he and director Dudley Murphy collaborated on a RCA motion picture of the same name, which was to be shown before the main attraction. Handy suggested blues singer Bessie Smith for the starring role because the song had made her popular. The movie was filmed in June and was shown in movie houses throughout the United States from 1929 to 1932.
In 1926 Handy wrote Blues: An Anthology—Complete Words and Music of 53 Great Songs. It is an early attempt to record, analyze, and describe the blues as an integral part of the South and the history of the United States. To celebrate the publication of the book and to honor Handy, Small's Paradise in Harlem hosted a party, "Handy Night", on Tuesday October 5, which contained the best of jazz and blues selections provided by Adelaide Hall, Lottie Gee, Maude White, and Chic Collins.
In a 1938 radio episode of Ripley's Believe it or not! Handy was described as "the father of jazz as well as the blues." Fellow blues performer Jelly Roll Morton wrote an open letter to Downbeat magazine fuming that he had actually invented jazz.
After the publication of his autobiography, Handy published a book on African-American musicians, Unsung Americans Sung (1944). He wrote three other books: Blues: An Anthology: Complete Words and Music of 53 Great Songs, Book of Negro Spirituals, and Negro Authors and Composers of the United States. He lived on Strivers' Row in Harlem. He became blind after an accidental fall from a subway platform in 1943. After the death of his first wife, he remarried in 1954 when he was 80. His bride was his secretary, Irma Louise Logan, who he frequently said had become his eyes. In 1955, he suffered a stroke, after which he began to use a wheelchair. More than eight hundred attended his 84th birthday party at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
On March 28, 1958, Handy died of bronchial pneumonia at Sydenham Hospital in New York City Over 25,000 people attended his funeral in Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church. Over 150,000 people gathered in the streets near the church to pay their respects. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
Compositions
Handy's music does not always follow the classic 12-bar pattern, often having 8- or 16-bar bridges between 12-bar verses.
"Memphis Blues", written 1909, published 1912. Although usually subtitled "Boss Crump", it is a distinct song from Handy's campaign satire, "Boss Crump don't 'low no easy riders around here", which was based on the good-time song "Mamma Don't Allow It."
"Yellow Dog Blues" (1912), "Your easy rider's gone where the Southern cross the Yellow Dog." The reference is to the crossing at Moorhead, Mississippi, of the Southern Railway and the local Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, called the Yellow Dog. By Handy's telling locals assigned the words "Yellow Dog" to the letters Y.D. (for Yazoo Delta) on the freight trains that they saw.

"Loveless Love", based in part on the classic "Careless Love". Possibly the first song to complain of modern synthetics, "with milkless milk and silkless silk, we're growing used to soulless soul."
"Aunt Hagar's Blues", the biblical Hagar, handmaiden to Abraham and Sarah, was considered the "mother" of African Americans
"Beale Street Blues" (1916), written as a farewell to Beale Street of Memphis, which was named Beale Avenue until the song's popularity caused it to be changed
"Long Gone John (from Bowling Green)", about a famous bank robber
"Chantez-Les-Bas (Sing 'Em Low)", a tribute to the Creole culture of New Orleans
"Atlanta Blues", which includes the song "Make Me a Pallet on your Floor" as its chorus.
"Ole Miss Rag" (1917), a ragtime composition, recorded by Handy's Orchestra of Memphis
Awards and honors
On May 17, 1969, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in his honor.
Handy was inducted in the National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.
He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1985, and was a 1993 Inductee into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, with the Lifework Award for Performing Achievement.
He received a Grammy Trustees Award for lifetime achievement in 1993.
Citing 2003 as "the centennial anniversary of when W.C. Handy composed the first blues music" the United States Senate in 2002 passed a resolution declaring the year beginning February 1, 2003 as the "Year of the Blues".
Handy was honored with two markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail, the "Enlightenment of W.C. Handy" in Clarksdale, Mississippi and a marker at his birthplace in Florence, Alabama.
Blues Music Award was known as the W. C. Handy Award until the name change in 2006.
W. C. Handy Music Festival is held annually in Florence, Alabama.
In 2017, his autobiography Father of the Blues was inducted in to the Blues Hall of Fame in the category of Classics of Blues Literature.

Wanna Chat? -Allie McNabb
With the rise of social media and continued innovation of technology, marketing efforts have shifted from flyers and physical advertisements to a more digital approach. Gone are the days in which consumers await catalogs in the mail to see a brand’s new products or to get information about sales and upcoming discounts. Firms have been spamming customer emails for years with constant prompts and updates, however the digital landscape of marketing is changing. Creating online content to engage the consumer, either through social media or a website, has become key in generating sales and acquiring the customer. And just as tech has changed the methods in which companies reach their end consumer, it has also influenced the needs and expectations of these end consumers. Amazon has not only given consumers access to pretty much anything they could want via their platform, they also offer delivery of these products in a fast and convenient way. This approach— fast, personalized and exceptional service—has become a common necessity across all retail industries. So how then, would a company differentiate itself from the competition?
Here come the bots! Chat-bots to be specific, a technology that is in the very early stages of creating a soon-to-be norm: “conversational commerce” (Sprouts Social). What is a bot you might ask? As explained by Hub Spot:
“No need to overcomplicate it. A bot is nothing more than a computer program that automates certain tasks, typically by chatting with a user through a conversational interface”.
At its simplest form, a bot can execute tasks such as ordering a new coffee maker online at the consumer’s command. Rather than scrolling through a website that has a bunch of different models and then inputting payment info, a bot guides the consumer through these tasks—almost as if they had their own personal sales associate. This addresses customer needs at the core, ensuring the most direct path to solving their problem. The main advantage to using a bot is the ability to access consumers where they spend a majority of their time—in their messages. Unwanted advertisements or digital content popping up in apps or on websites could soon be a marketing practice of the past. Bots enable companies to directly communicate with their customers, “and unlike the self-serving marketing of the past, bots provide a service” (Hub Spot). And with that service—comes great responsibility. Employing a bot means that usefulness and service to the end consumer should be a main priority. This service enables firms to add additional value to their product and brand—offering a key competitive advantage.
But as this tech is continuing to be developed and innovated through artificial intelligence, companies should be aware of potential downfalls. As the bot’s purpose is to make a certain process easier for the consumer, when that goal is not accomplished it can cause immense frustration. For example, if the bot doesn’t understand what the consumer is asking it to do the process becomes extremely more complicated and leaves the customer confused and annoyed. Back in 2016, Microsoft was one of the first companies to publicly experiment with chat-bots and AI. A Twitter account under the name ‘Tay’ was created and built to respond and interact with her millennial followers, just as any human would. But days later the account was disabled, and her tweets were deleted, after Tay responded to and retweeted racist tweets. Microsoft built the bot to learn from human interactions on the app, which is exactly what it did. This instance shows what can go wrong when bots are implemented in the wrong scenarios with an unidentified purpose to the end consumer. Although this may have just been an experiment for Microsoft, it emphasizes the importance of creating marketing campaigns with the needs of the end consumer and brand image in mind.

As with any technology in its infancy stage, there will be bumps and glitches along the way as developers continue to adapt it. It will be important for companies to understand this technology and the purpose of it before implementing it into their systems and marketing approach in order to effectively utilize this new technology.
