A message to everyone :

Ever since I began this blog and continuously shared its content, I never asked any of you to follow me, share these posts, or use the Blaze feature to promote them. I've been entirely absorbed in writing articles and translating stories and posts from the people of Gaza without concerning myself with whether they will reach a broad audience or not. My initial goal was to reach any number of individuals, even if it was just one person, in the hope of increasing their awareness. That would have been sufficient for me.

But today, particularly after the recent news confirming the complete shutdown of the internet, electricity, and communications in Gaza, along with the isolation imposed by the Israeli occupation and the brutal and savage bombings happening now as I write these lines, I want everyone to share what's happening. Not just on Tumblr but everywhere you can. Share on WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and for those who are proficient in Russian, share on platforms like VK. If you know Korean, share in Naver cafes. Share with your family, your loved ones, and those you meet on the street. Let everyone know about the monstrous massacres the occupation is committing against Palestinian civilians, teenage girls and young women who have become widows due to the bombings, young children whose lives were forcibly taken from them while they clung to life, and the elderly who hoped for a longer life or a peaceful death beside their children and families, but the occupation robbed them of this, making the old man witness the deaths of all his family members, his children, and his grandchildren, and then he dies alone, hoping to join them.

O People, humans, whether you are Muslims, Christians, Jews, or followers of any religion, my message is for those of you who have humanity, whatever your identity may be. Your silence today means you are participating in an extermination worse than what Hitler did to the Jews, even worse than the victims of all the world wars combined. At that time, there weren't sufficient means of communication, so everyone's excuse was that they couldn't do anything except publish in newspapers. But today, in our current era, there are many available options. So, what's your excuse now?

Your silence and inaction are permission for them to continue their slaughter and the extraction of souls from their bodies. Let everyone do whatever is within their power, and all of us should know that we can do a lot. Warsaw

When you walk in Warsaw you walk on blood-drenched ground

It is a rare thing for a city to rise up thus from ruins

Atlantis in reverse from a sea of crumbled walls

You look beneath your feet: here was the ghetto wall

On one side there died many; on the other there died more

And the bricks that built this city are mixed with human ashes

And there remains a haunting song of memory in the wind

for those of you who may be wondering "why is everyone so happy Henry Kissinger died" or "who even is Henry Kissinger" here's a brief explanation: He's a war criminal responsible for the death of millions to the point he's often compared to Hitler because he killed so many innocent people. He was secretary of state under Nixon and a national security advisor under Gerald Ford. He is directly responsible for the reason the Vietnam war went on 7 years longer than it was supposed to. He was responsible for Laos being bombed 270 million times, making it the most bombed country ever. He's also responsible for carpet bombing Cambodia despite there being literally no reason to. Also he overthrew Chile's first female president and replaced her with the dictator Augusto Pinochet who killed thousands. And this is literally just the tip of the iceberg.

Edit: I've been told that the president overthrown in Chile was Salvador Allende, who was the first democratically elected socialist president and that the first female president was Michelle Bachelet in 2006. Sorry for my mistake.

white trans mascs like spacelazarwolf have no issue calling indigenous people "bone chillingly disturbing" for disagreeing with them.

actually i called what you said antisemitic, because it was. i called what i've witnessed from gentiles in general bone-chillingly disturbing and cruel, and that i've witnessed so much ignorance, hostility, and bloodlust from gentiles. because i keep seeing posts celebrating the massacre that happened on the 7th, and i keep getting anons that tell me "hitler missed one", "the world would be better off without your ilk", "we should have gotten rid of you all ages ago", "die zionists rats *nose emoji*", and a lot of very graphic descriptions of how they would like to rape and kill me. one user, blatantly on their blog, openly said that someone should kill me, and someone said they knew where i lived and could make that happen. that's not disagreeing with me. that is bloodlust.

they pretend to care about racism when trans women engage in it, but have zero issue jumping right to demonic stereotypes about indigenous people who dare to point out that their support of israel is supporting genocide.

Some people defend the Grindelwald thing (where he vapes out visions of WWII) with "well he was just using that to manipulate them, he wasn't really concerned about WWII"

Okay. If he's just saying bullshit to mislead his followers, then JK Rowling should've had him show them something that we know won't happen to make it clear to the audience "hey, he's lying to them". Or hell, if he's Nazi coded, and we're already insensitively bringing up World War II, why not just make him a literal Nazi? If he was like "the war will be like this, so we should help Hitler win it quickly" we'd cleanly go Oh This Is a Bad Guy

Instead he tricks his followers by showing them visions of real events that will happen, and canonically not be prevented by wizards. Yeah he's doing it to say "wow muggles are awful and we should be scared of them" but the idea that we Shouldn't Take That Seriously is kinda undermined by, again, the events inspiring that being real ass things that happened. I don't know, muggles very much do make and drop the bomb irl, I think?

It gets back to the bigger issue that the movie The Crimes of Grindelwald is strangely vague about what his crimes are. It's titled THE CRIMES OF VILLAINNAME and it mostly establishes his crimes via random newspaper montages & stray lines of backstory. We see the Wizard Cops do more murders at his public speech at the end than we see Grindelwald commit in The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie Film for Theaters

Idk, you could argue Fantastic Beasts 2 is one of the worst movies ever made by a mainstream Hollywood studio. It's certainly one of the worst scripts ever produced by one. It's so amateurish and clunky it would never, ever see the light of day if it wasn't from a writer that famous and protected from comments like "why does your movie about your villain's crimes not contain your villain's crimes". Every part of it is just endlessly baffling.

As a black person I actually find the logic of many Zionists to be audacious.

My people were sold and kidnapped. We were enslaved for hundreds of years. We had the most despicable things happen to us. I’m sure you may relate, we were put into breeding camps, they used our parts to make clothes and furniture, allegedly they ate us, they tortured us, etc.

There is more than enough proof I am indigenous to Africa hell I found and reconnected with the family one of my ancestors was taken from. I am very lucky.

At no point have I ever thought about going to West Africa and taking the land back, stealing property, imprisoning, and murdering people who’ve lived there for centuries and still live there today. Even though there’s a possibility that they’ve participated in the selling of at least one of my ancestors.

Just because I can trace my heritage there doesn’t suddenly mean I have a claim on the land. I have heard so many Zionist say they belong there more than Palestinians, that there claim on the land is stronger. Maybe it’s not all of them but it is enough to be concerning.

Also bring up Liberia if you want. We didn’t ask for that.

This is a fair critique and it brings up one of the most important aspects of Zionism, and of all Jewish life in the modern era and from now on: that Zionism was always morally RIGHT, but it did not have to be morally NECESSARY.

For decades there was a raging, controversial, legitimately two-sided intracommunity debate over Zionism, like nothing you see among Jews today, memorably portrayed in Chaim Potok's novel "The Chosen" (and subsequent film version). The Reform Jewish Movement, our largest denomination, was governed by an explicitly anti-Zionist platform for over 50 years..... until they changed their minds in 1937. The Jewish people always trace their heritage to Eretz Yisrael, always could claim a rightful place there - but things should never have been allowed to get bad enough, fast enough, that in the truest sense their only choice was to create a state of Israel or die.

As early as 1920, Hitler said his goal was total extermination of the Jews. Nobody cared. America sealed its gates to Jewish immigrants in 1924. Germany began visibly prepping for genocide around 1935, again nobody cared. At Evian 1938 - "the great betrayal" - pretty much every powerful state in the world acknowledged that the Jews were about to be wiped out, and knowing that, refused to allow refugees to enter (except for the Dominican Republic, the mensches). England bowed to Arab terrorism and sealed off immigration to Mandate Palestine - which was a violation of international law under the League of Nations but, again, nobody cared. Nobody, not one single country, fought to protect the Jews or to help them escape. The Allies couldn't be bothered to bomb the tracks into Auschwitz, but they would heroically sink refugee ships. After the war, 250,000 Jews lingered miserably in displaced persons camps for YEARS, with not one single country being willing to admit them, and in nearly all cases there being nothing to return to anyway. There were still Jews kept in Dachau, guarded by Germans, until 1951.

From a 1945 report to Truman: "Many Jewish displaced persons … are living under guard behind barbed-wire fences … including some of the most notorious concentration camps … had no clothing other than their concentration camp garb…. Most of them have been separated three, four or five years and they cannot understand why the liberators should not have undertaken immediately the organized effort to re-unite family groups…. Many of the buildings … are clearly unfit for winter…. [Author contrasted these conditions with the relative normal life led by the nearby German populations and wondered at the contrast] ...We appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them except that we do not exterminate them. They are in concentration camps in large numbers under our military guard instead of S.S. troops. One is led to wonder whether the German people, seeing this, are not supposing that we are following or at least condoning Nazi policy...."

Those who attempted to return to their former communities were routinely murdered (seen at the end of "Maus"). There was a massacre of Holocaust survivors in Kiev, Ukraine in September 1945, another in Kielce, Poland in July 1946.

The Jews saw Palestine as their only hope, because it was. And when they saw their enemies there were led by actual red-handed Nazi war criminals, and heard that the stakes were once again their total genocide? Well, that's when you fight.... damn hard... to build the state and the military that will, FOR ONCE, protect you.

You talk about "At no point in my life have I considered claiming a part of Africa and fighting the people who I find there". Well - what if it was extremely obviously that or death?

A popular saying among Jews: "Israel was not created because there was a Holocaust. The Holocaust was created because there was no Israel." It's true - but it should not have been necessary to have an Israel to prevent the Holocaust. The rest of the world should have done that, and they didn't so much fail in preventing it as much as they succeeded in enabling it. You are correct to say that African-Americans did not ask for Liberia. The concept was made up by white people to try to get blacks out of America (though it gained popularity with black people after "milestones" of new cruelty such as the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, and I believe Marcus Garvey is well-liked to this day). Well, Jews did not ask to have no government in the world grant us equality or defend us from genocide. We did not ask to have no choice. Today about 90% of Jews are Zionists. Not just out of the everlasting moral principle, but because of the life-or-death reality that when we needed ANY OTHER OPTION TO WORK, NOTHING DID. And since then, there has been even clearer demonstration of the tenuousness of Jewish survival and the depths of inhuman hatred we face from our enemies, as the 3,000-year-old Mizrahi Jewish civilization was successfully uprooted and purged from dozens of countries (which had already been oppressing and massacring them long before Zionism) as collective racial revenge against Israel. The mere fact that that was logistically possible - that it could be done, quickly and repeatedly - speaks worlds about the normalized culture of eliminationism surrounding us. What do you really think are the chances that African-Americans could be altogether physically purged from the USA or some of its states? Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, and Eritrea finished their Jews within the last 5 years.

As "critics of Israel" have made it extremely clear that all Jews worldwide remain legitimate targets, that all "colonizers" (unquestionably including Americans like me) "deserve it" ("it" to include infanticide, rape, kidnapping, and mass murder), and as America visibly decays into algorithmic racist authoritarianism and climatic desperation.... you should not expect that 90% to change.

The West - including the Biden Administration, the United Nations, the EU, and a host of “liberal” democracies - put the gun in the hand of the Hamas terrorist who killed her. They have excused, ignored, and funded Hamas and PA. They do this under the guise of “humanitarian” donations.

All those donations have done have ensured that something which should have been settled in one war in 1949 continues to this day. No other nation on this planet has had to deal with a situation like this. No other set of “refugees” are treated like the Arabs who fled during the 1948 - 1949 Israeli War of Independence.

Gina is dead because the rest of the world never said “enough”, the matter has been decided and moved on. They never required the Egyptians, Jordanians, Syrians, and Lebanese to end the apartheid practices, practices which deny basic liberties to people who are born with their borders from attaining, among other things, citizenship, employment in their chosen professions, ownership of land, and host of other things that reduced the Arabs to islands of concentration refugee camps in Arab countries.

Egypt and Jordan bear particular blame. Both controlled sections of occupied Israel, sections that they cynically renamed as colonizers do. Changing the Judea and Samaria into “The West Bank” while Egypt kept the Gaza Strip. Both had the power to establish a “Palestinian State”. Neither did. Rather they incorporated the land into their countries but denied the people living there full citizenship. They keep the camps quiet by promising them that they would eventually help them establish a “Palestinian” state once Israel had been eradicated.

And the West allowed this status quo to remain. They allowed and funded a network of refugee camps to exist. They turned a blind eye when they were transformed into cesspools of hate, preaching revenge against an enemy that had the temerity to not roll over and die. UNWRA schools for generations have taught antisemitism that even Hitler would say was over the top.

So, financed by the west, with no incentive to do anything but remain obdurate and unwilling to compromise, fermented terror groups, each more extreme than the other, sometimes only distinguished by whether they were Marxist in their ideology or whether they were Islamist.

No matter what atrocity, the money never stopped flowing to the Arabs. Raid across the border? Here’s your money. Smash the head of a baby open with a Kalashnikov becuase you don’t think the Jewish baby is worth the cost of a bullet? Here’s money to pay for more. They always claim that the money is subject to oversight, to make sure what it is not spent on anything but “humanitarian” goods. But the fact of the matter remains that every dollar, pound, duetschmark, and euro that the Arabs don;t have to have to spend on infrastructure is one that they can spend on the next bomb, suicide attacker, rocket, or rifle.

And, for all the “humanitarian” supplies that are purchased with the West’s money, does it make it to the, supposedly, innocent Gazans? Most of it doesn’t. Hams doesn’t even try to hide it. They released a video showing how they took pipes meant for Gaza’s water infrastructure and turned them into rockets. What did the west do? Protested Israel’s attempt to deprive Hamas of more materials to built rockets and tunnels.

And is Hamas ever held accountable for what it does? Have the Bow Street runners ever tried to serve a warrant on one of theirs when they visit the UK?

No.

Instead they target, harass, and hold back Israel. When Israel had the gall to destroy the nuclear weapons facility at Osirak, was it congratulated? No. Reagan with held weapons supplies.

Has Biden ever turned off the funds to Hamas prior to the most recent attack? I can’t find any evidence of that. Actually, we may still be funding the UNWRA camps right now. The progressive do a good show of commiserating with Israel and the Jews when Hamas kills Jews. Personally, I think they like seeing dead Jews. I think it allows the progressives show some moral outrage.

But is it followed up by anything concrete? Not really. They say “oh we’re sorry your people died. … But no, you can’t go in and finish off the people who kill your people. You have to follow all the rules that the terrorists brazenly ignore or we will sick the ICC - which admits it has no jurisdiction but is willing to say it does have jurisdiction despite its own rules - on you so that your people will be subject to arrest if they travel anywhere.

Is that unfair? I don’t really care.

Progressives/Liberals, whatever they are called, don’t care about Jews unless its how much the Jews are donating to their campaigns. The fact that Reform Judaism does not recognize this is as serious a lapse as when the American Jewish community gave FDR a pass for not calling out Hitler’s treatment of the Jews prior to and during the war. We as a Jewish community in the US and the world need to recognize that blind obedience to leftist groups is not something we should be doing, and quite frankly, is not something we will survive given the bigotry festering those parties which is becoming more and more mainstream.

Don’t believe me? Ilham Omar and Rashida Tlaib are congresswomen who have repeatedly made it clear they hate the Jews. And they have been barely censured. They have been funded by the Democratic Party and suffered no lack of support in primary season.

The argument is always that Israel hasn’t gone far enough to appease the Arabs. What more did Israel have to do to show they would appease them than when they put Jerusalem on the table back during the Clinton Administration’s brokered talks. Arafat rejected it because it wasn’t enough. He wanted an undefined more.

And the argument is even more ridiculous when it comes to Hamas. Hamas’ charter and statements are clear: they will not negotiate any settlement with Israel. Their goal is the destruction of the Jewish state and the removal or death of all Jews between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Incidentally, for those who don’t know, that is exactly what the various terror groups mean when they say “From the River to the Sea, Palestine shall be free.” Its is a statement of intent to commit genocide.

But the West keeps trying to a force a settlement where the PA and Hamas do not want a settlement. Only Israel does. That has been the same story since 1947 when the UN tried to create two states and failed. It failed, not because the Jewish yishuv rejected the plan. They accepted the plan even though it would mean the loss of Jersusalem and a small country bisected in part by an Arab state filled with people who had demonstrated history of trying to kill them. No, the Arabs rejected the proposal.

A Hamas coward killed her. But the West handed him the loaded weapon.

Rosie Rosenthal going to war and becoming a pilot to personally bomb the fuck out of Hitler because it was the right thing to do as a human being, and then going home, getting back to work, and then getting offered the chance to be part of the Nuremberg prosecution team.

And he meets his wife--a fellow prosecutor--on the ship over to the trial. And they're married basically the moment they land in Europe.

And then he interrogates Herman Göring personally.

Do you remember those Peanuts strips where Snoopy fights against the Red Baron? The WWI fighting ace? That was fucking Göring. Literally. He was the leader of that squadron.

That's who Rosie Rosenthal interrogated for Nuremberg. His literal mirror image.

He flew 52 fucking missions. He broke his arm twice. He was training to pilot in the Pacific because that war wasn't over even as the ETO came to a close. And his encore to his war service was to fucking take out Herman fucking Göring.

I think the reason WW2 stories stay so close to our hearts if we're Allies is because even if the most unassuming of people became heroes but also, even the unquestionable heroes went far beyond anything that feels real or true for any of us.

But they did.

And in doing so, they gave us something to strive towards. Do I want to go to war, become an icon amongst terrified men, then go back and kick a war criminal all the way in the ass? God no. Not ever. Do I want to, when I am gone, leave a legacy where people saw me go, "I did this because it was fucking right" and then make decisions in their own lives with an eye towards doing what is right? Yes.

During the London Blitz of 1940 & 1941, the Nazis decided that their bombers should include civilian targets in order to terrorize the civilian population into surrendering to the Nazis. Adolph Hitler thought that, by intentionally killing as many civilians as possible, it would weaken Great Britain's resolve to fight the Nazis. (Some of the German bombers used incendiary bombs to cause as much damage & casualties among the civilian population.) The results of the London Blitz though, was that it only resolved the angry British people to just resist & fight harder.

Hey, this story is back too! I know I was supposed to be working on it all of October, but that kinda went to hell as October was an unusually busy month for me.

So have a long chapter as an apology.

Here we have Wayne rocking Jason and Patrick's world and Josh just casually dropping a bomb on Steve.

Also I was noticing that engagement to my stories have dropped off again. I'mma gonna blame Tumblr and the holidays. In all seriousness if my tags aren't tag you let me know. I'll try to find a different way to tag again.

Jason and Patrick showed up at Wayne’s trailer at dawn. The old vampire sat on the porch with a large sun hat and every other part of his skin covered.

Both boys came to an abrupt stop.

“I didn’t know vampires could walk in daylight,” Patrick said, getting his voice back sooner than Jason.

Wayne was on them in an instant. Not as fast as he was at night, but still quicker than a human. He grabbed Patrick’s wrist and yanked it to eye level. A patch of skin showed between Wayne’s sleeve and his weathered work glove. The skin reddened but didn’t blister or catch fire.

Wayne dropped Patrick’s hand. “Our skin is merely more sensitive than yours. I moved slower to make sure none of my skin became exposed.”

Both boys gulped. They thought they were going to have an easier time during the day, but Wayne had put that to bed right quick.

“Get in the truck,” Wayne growled and the boys hurried to obey.

He got into the driver’s seat and drove out past city limits. They pulled up to an old church.

“I’m about to blow another stupid superstition out of the water,” he chuckled. “Follow me.”

He hopped out the truck and they scrambled to follow him. He walked right up to a big wrought iron gate that read: HAWKINS CITY CEMETERY and pulled out a set of keys. After he rifled through them a moment, he unlocked the gate.

He stepped onto hallowed ground and Jason and Patrick gulped audibly as they watched him cross himself.

“Follow me,” Wayne said gruffly.

The two boys hurried to obey.

They strolled through the cemetery to a relatively new part of the grounds. It had roughly ten or so headstones all about the same age, dirty and overgrown.

“You’ll start with scrubbing each of these headstones,” he told them. “I will teach you how to clean them properly and that is what you will do until I say otherwise.”

“Sir?” Patrick asked, raising his hand timidly.

Wayne huffed and cocked an eyebrow at him. “What?”

“Why are they like that?” he asked a little more sure. “Doesn’t anyone come to mourn them?”

Wayne licked his lip slowly. “This is the old Harrington pack. These are all those that sided with alpha Jack Sullivan when he chose to hunt humans in my town.”

“So they are monsters,” Jason sneered.

Wayne was on him in a second, hand wrapped around his throat. “Let me make it clear, boy. Ted Bundy was human. H.H. Holmes was human. Adolf Hitler was human. Fucking Caligula was human. Nasty people do all sorts of nasty ass shit. Monsters don’t exist. Just bad people doing horrible things to others.”

Jason’s eyes were wide. He could feel Wayne’s hand on his throat but it was so feather light he could almost trick his mind that it wasn’t there. That he could escape.

But that part of his brain that lit up when there was a predator nearby wouldn’t let him. It would take all of a single heartbeat for Wayne Munson to crush his windpipe. He would be dead before he even hit the ground.

“Steve Harrington could call you two monsters, after all,” Wayne growled. “Do you think he’d be right for it?”

Patrick refused to look at Jason or Wayne, just stared at the ground, worrying his bottom lip.

Jason’s eyes went wide as he looked into dark pools of Wayne’s eyes. What he found there weren’t the eyes of a beast or a monster, but of man granted the abilities to protect those he loved better than most.

If death was a suitable punishment for hunting and then attempted rape and murder of a woman, than why were they granted a boon when those laying there in the dirt did not.

“Why spare us?” Jason breathed. “Why not do us like you did them?”

“The mayor wanted me to,” Wayne explained. “Tearing you two apart would be as easy as ripping up a newspaper for kindling.”

“So why didn’t you?” Patrick asked, looking up at them.

“Because to me you are but infants in the grand scheme of things,” he said. “Killing you would have sent a message to the town, to the nation that hunting people like animals is not to be tolerated.”

He let go of Jason’s neck. “But do you want to know what else it would have done?”

The two boys shared a glance.

“It would have galvanized all the hunters in the country,” Wayne informed them. “They would have turned you two into martyrs. You would become their rallying cry. Hunters would have invaded our small town, killed anyone they thought was a vampire or werewolf. They wouldn’t have stopped to check either. No trials. No tests with silver. Anyone they thought was a supe, they’d be dead. This place would be in ruins in days.”

Jason and Patrick’s jaws dropped.

“And before you get any bright ideas,” he warned them, “all I have to do is turn you over to the law. Two months of a trial plus the automatic death sentence for hunting and you two are dead without the fuss.”

Patrick had started to believe him, but he knew Jason was going to a hard sell. But he had time.

“Now that’s all been cleared up,” Wayne said. “Let me show you how to clean these headstones and then you’ll be doing it all yourselves.”

They nodded and Wayne got to work. Once he was sure they had it, he perched on a nearby tree stump and watched.

“That boy shouldn’t be here,” Murray growled.

Steve sighed heavily. “So you have several times since sun up. The point of this is to teach him that werewolves aren’t the monsters from their fiction.”

They were standing in front of the compound entrance for Josh Bentley to arrive. Josh would work his first six weeks with the pack and his second six weeks with the coven. Chance would do the reverse.

Josh showed up on time, his parents trailing behind like frightened deer in the headlights.

Steve stepped forward. “Hey, Josh. Mr and Mrs Bentley. It’s nice to see you.”

Mr Bentley gripped Josh’s shoulders from behind tightly as Mrs Bentley held Josh’s hand tightly. They nodded mutely.

“So here’s how it’s going to go,” Steve continued as if they had greeted him back. “On the weekends he is here from sun up to sun down and then every day after school. He can tell you what he does here. Nothing he’ll see is a secret. However there will be areas that are off limits for his protection…” He cocked his head to side. “Mainly due to not having the strength to get there.”

They stared at him blankly and he laughed. “He’ll see what I mean later.” He held out his hand. “Come on, it’s time to show you around.”

Josh looked back at his dad, who nodded. He let go of his mom’s hand and walked toward Steve.

“This is Murray Bauman,” Steve explained. “He’s the sentry right now.”

“Why do you need a sentry if it’s not secret?” Josh asked.

Murray’s grin was slimy. “Yes, Steve, why do you need a sentry if it isn’t secret?”

“It not a secret what’s in a museum or art gallery either,” Steve said with a shrug, “but they still have people protecting it.”

“So it’s valuable?” Josh asked, eyes wide.

He ruffled the kid’s hair. “Not in the way you mean. It’s valuable because all life is valuable. One of our pups was a test subject of the last Dominus and we don’t want our own taken like that again.”

Josh nodded. They started walking through the woods, leaving a disgruntled Murray behind.

“That makes sense,” Josh said. “If someone hurt my family like that, I’m not sure I wouldn’t want to lock them to keep them safe, too.”

Steve nodded back. “Right. All the wolves are free to come and go as they will, but we screen outsiders now because it’s been scary for us.”

Josh ducked his head. “Like what we did.”

Steve stopped their trek through the woods and turned to him. “Very like. But that’s why you’re here and not Andy or Patrick or Jason. Because you realized on some level what they were doing was wrong, but went along with it because you wanted to be cool like you thought they were.”

Josh nodded. “I like basketball. It’s fun and Jason was the captain, you know. I thought it was going to be a little hazing thing. Because you were on the team, too. They made it sound like you knew it was coming and was in on it.”

Steve felt a cold sliver of dread down slip his spine. “What?”

Josh bit his lip.

“Yeah, they told us that the trap was fake and that it wasn’t real silver. Things started to get bad when they kept taking it farther and farther. The cross, the beatings...I don’t know what would have happened if that vampire had come and chased us off.”

Steve grabbed the boy’s shoulders. “Their plan was to kill me. The only reason Andy got off so lightly is that he ran when Eddie...” Josh frowned in confusion, “the vampire, swooped in to rescue me.”

Josh’s eyes went wide. “Shit, man! I swear I had no idea.”

“That’s what Sheriff Powell reported to Mayor Roberts,” Steve said. “That you and Chase had no idea what was going on. Both of you seemed to think it was a prank gone wrong.”

Josh nodded. “Honest, we did! We thought the hunter thing was just pretend. A macho club. I thought that it was a way to air out grievances. Talk about how wrong it was for them to be ruling our town.”

Steve cocked his head to the side. “But Powell and Roberts are both human. Until the attempt on my life this town was run by humans.”

Josh’s eyes went wider than Steve thought was possible on a human. “But I thought werewolves were traditionally the sheriff and vampires were the mayor!”

Steve stepped back. “Who told you that?”

Josh furrowed his brow. “It’s what they taught us in history, man.”

Steve raised his chin and heaved out a heavy sigh. “And this history lesson it wouldn’t happen to take place on a day most supernatural beings were out of class, say...the day after a full moon?”

Josh frowned as he thought back to all the times in history he heard about vampires and werewolves taking over the running of the town. “I don’t really remember, but I guess so.”

Steve’s second sigh was no less heavy. It looked like he was going to have to join the PTA.

“Come on,” he said. “Let me introduce you to the rest of the pack.”

Hopper and Joyce stayed back, but the rest rushed to meet Josh. Well, everyone but Lucas.

Lucas he already knew from basketball. The young man stood off to the side. Not hanging back like Joyce and Hopper, but not rushing to meet him either.

Lucas didn’t know how to act so he was waiting for a signal from his alpha. From his friend. From Steve.

Steve introduced the pack. The Wheelers, the Byers brothers, the Hendersons, the rest of the Sinclairs, and even Jane.

The remaining three, Joyce, Hopper, and Lucas waited to see what their alpha would do.

“In an unprecedented turn of events,” Steve said with a lopsided smile, “we have the previous alpha male and female, Jim Hopper, you know, and Joyce Byers.”

Josh cocked his head to the side. “Awk-ward.”

Steve laughed. And even Joyce couldn’t quite hide her smile.

Josh looked around. “I don’t see anything that I could do for you guys,” he said honestly.

Steve turned to three members of the pack that he hadn’t introduced yet. “This Tommy Hagen, Carol Perkins, and Robin Buckley. They’re keepers. What they do for the pack is what you’ll be learning how to do the time you’re here.”

Josh looked at the three older teenagers skeptically. “What can they do?”

Steve grinned. “Mortal families looking for prestige will send their sons or daughters to the pack to become keepers. They aren’t werewolves, they can’t change at will or in the light of the full moon, but they are stronger, faster, and more agile then your average human.”

“More durable too!” Robin said excitedly. “I haven’t broken a single bone since I became a keeper. It’s so cool!”

Josh frowned. “Do you guys remain keepers until you die or what happens?”

Tommy and Carol shared a glance, before Carol said, “You can stay a keeper all your life, you live longer than the average human, but not as long as a werewolf. Or you can go back to being human when you leave the pack to go to college or whatever. It looks killer on any resumé or application.”

“Or...” Tommy said, “you can ask to be made a werewolf. The alpha can always say no, but you can always ask. And even if the alpha does say yes, it doesn’t mean that it’ll take. But it’s not as though you’ll be maimed or killed if it doesn’t. So some people take the risk.”

“Today,” Steve said, gently steering the conversation away from transformations, “you’ll help Carol get supplies and she’ll show you where they’re put.”

“Shopping run?” Josh asked. Carol nodded. “Hell yeah. Count me in.”

Steve laughed at his enthusiasm. “Don’t say that or you’ll become her shopping buddy for life.”

Carol grinned wolfishly, but Josh just grinned back.

Josh ran off with Carol and they were chatting like old friends.

Nancy came up behind Steve and put her arm around his waist. “This was a really good idea. He gets to see how much we are the same and how special we are without all the negative mind dump the general public feeds him.”

Steve hummed. “I’m concerned about some of the things he was telling me on the way in about how negative the portrayal of us is. I need to talk to Wayne, but since he’s busy with Jason and Patrick, Eddie will have to do.”

Nancy poked his ribs and he squirmed.

“You just want to see your boyfriend,” she teased.

Steve kissed the top of her head. “Guilty as charged. But it is important I talk to him and Wayne about what Josh said. Hold down the fort for me?”

“Always.”

He gave her a hug and shifted, running for the direction of Forest Hills Trailer Park.

The Heroic Nanny: Erzsebet Fajo

She saved the entire family

Erzsebet Fajo was a brave young babysitter who saved the lives of her employers – a family of four – during the Nazi occupation of Hungary in 1944.

Erzsebet Fajo was a Slovakian girl from a poor family who emigrated to Hungary by herself at age 13 to work as a nanny. She found employment with the Abonyis, a Jewish family in the small town of Bekescsaba. Parents Laszlo and Margit treasured Erzsebet as a member of the family, and she became like a big sister to their two children, Zsuzsanna and Ivan.

In 1941, the family moved to Budapest because of anti-Jewish persecution in Bekescsaba, and of course Erzsebet went with them. Despite the violent turmoil engulfing Europe, life in Hungary was relatively normal for the Abonyi family. Hungarian President Miklos Horthy had an alliance with Hitler’s Germany, but was reluctant to enforce Nazi decrees against the Jews. That reluctance, plus Horthy’s secret attempts to strike a deal with the Allies, led Germany to invade Hungary in March 1944.

The country was now run by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross party and the situation for Hungary’s Jews got very bad very quickly. All Jews from the moment of birth were required to wear a yellow star prominently displayed on their clothing. Erzsebet, who felt like a member of the Abonyi family, wanted to wear a star too even though she wasn’t Jewish. Instead, they sadly told her she’d have to leave their employment to save her own life – non-Jews weren’t allowed to work for Jews. The Abonyis knew their days were numbered. Ten year old Zsuzsanna tried to convince her parents to commit suicide rather than be separated and murdered. Of course they refused to consider such a drastic act and tried everything to get out of Hungary but they were trapped.

At that point, young Erzsebet stepped up to become the family’s savior. Zsuzsanna remembered, “How (could) she save (us)? She didn’t have any money. She didn’t have an independent life… It (was) very sweet, but it (had) no validity. But I was wrong to think that. When the siege of Budapest started (and) virtually every home was ruined and bombed down, she was in the streets trying to get false papers.”

Erzsebet visited the Abonyis every day, bringing them food as well as medicine and other essential goods. She took all their valuables and brought them to an aunt so they wouldn’t be plundered by the Nazis.

On October 15, 1944 Laszlo Abonyi was arrested at his home and taken to a deportation center, where he awaited transport to a brutal Nazi slave labor camp.

Determined to save him, Erzsebet boldly approached the Red Cross and somehow obtained a letter of protection that she used to get Laszlo released. She knew the Abonyis were not safe in their home, and not sure what to do she pleaded with a local priest for assistance and advice. He helped her get letters from the Vatican which made the family eligible to take shelter in a building in Budapest owned by the Apostolic Nuncio. The Abonyis sheltered there for a few weeks, until the facility was attacked by the Arrow Cross. Storm troopers forced all the Jews outside and prepared to shoot them on the banks of the Danube river. Somehow, in the chaos, Erzsebet helped all four Abonyis escape.

For the next two months, Erzsebet found hiding places for the Abonyis and obtained forged papers for them. She continued visiting each member of the family every day, even though they were all in different parts of Budapest. Finally Erzsebet found safe shelter for the family in a “White Cross Hospital” – an apartment building packed with bunk beds where families targeted by the Nazis were hiding out.

Hungary was liberated by the Soviet Union in January 1945 and the Abonyis were able to return to their apartment. After the war they legally adopted Erzsebet, making it official that she was a member of the Abonyi family. They sent her to school so she could get a good education, and left her a third of their estate. Zsuzsanna and her husband left Hungary following the failed revolution of 1956 and moved to the United States, where Zsuzsanna became a respected writer, professor and founder of the Holocaust Studies Program at the University of Texas. She maintained a close correspondence with her adopted sister until Erzsebet’s death in 1995.

Erzsebet Fajo was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 1986. In her testimony, Zsuzsanna said, “Driven by the desire to save us, Erzsi defied the Germans. She saved us from death, saved my brother and me from becoming orphans and my parents from the worst anguish that can befall people – the loss of their children. It was her strength and heroism that gave us life, allowed us to grow up and eventually have children of our own.”
