NINJA WEAPONS TRAINING ✅ How To FIGHT with KUSARI FUNDO in CQC 🥷🏻 Ninjutsu Techniques

Issue #9 of the mirage tmnt is “Pre-teenage mutant ninja turtles.” Eastman’s annotations say that they had wanted to “explore the ‘growing-up part’ of the TMNTs’ history.”
So they’re younger and goofier in this issue, but what’s interesting is they haven’t all landed on their signature weapons.
Leo’s only got one sword, Raph is using tonfa, and Mikey has manriki-gusari. Donnie has his staff. JUST LIKE IN RISE!! The show that’s sort of set up as a “pre” tmnt story!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I imagine the people making Rise did this on purpose. It’s a neat callback!

Delighted to discover that when we go back in time and see the pre-teen Mirage turtles still in training they're using:
A two-handed sword for Leonardo. A manriki-gusari for Michelangelo. Tonfa for Raphael. And still a bo for Donatello.
Rise really did its reseach.

So, one thing I find REALLY COOL about Rise, is how DETAILED it is with the callbacks - and one I want to gush about r/n is Raph and Mikey’s weapons (and Leo’s, but mostly Raph and Mikey).
So, Rise of the TMNT is kinda meant to be a show about the turtles BECOMING the TMNT. It’s right there in the name: “RISE OF THE teenage mutant ninja turtles.” That’s WHY Leo’s not the leader, that’s WHY it takes them so long to get the name right. They’re still growing into who they’re meant to become, they’re not quite there yet.
And their WEAPONS play into this theme, too! Cause they’re not only a REFERENCE, they are a DEEP CUT.
Tumblr media
In tmnt #9 (Mirage Studios): The Passing, we get a flashback comic of sorts where the boys are specifically refered to as pre-teens.
Tumblr media
In The Passing, Mikey is shown to currently use “manriki gusari” - which, as far as I can tell, is just another name for “kusari fundo” - and Raph uses tonfa. Leo is also only using one (1) sword, though I don’t think it’s an odachi. Odachi are... really big, at least 3 shaku (feet-ish) long, but tbf, they would potentially be carried on the back the way Leo does, so... maybe?
And like - that’s really cool! It’s a really neat callback, and the weapons end up being a representation of where they are in life! So when they get their classic weapons, it’s like! A big deal! I really like it!

Note
I'm remembering a team I came up with based the Horsemen of the Apocalypse (plus the Fifth Horseman from Discworld). I don't recall the names I gave them, though.
Pestilince wields a bow and has a Semblance that makes people in an area dizzy and feverish, without actually making them ill.
War has a sword and a Semblance that lets them go full Berserker, fighting with enhanced strength, speed, and stamina at the cost of rapidly draining Aura and their senses going blurry.
Famine wields a manriki-gusari (basically a chain with heavy weights on both ends) and their Semblance drains people's Aura into their own on contact.
Death has a scythe and can pinpoint living things and how strong their Aura is.
Kaos/Chaos has a sword and can invert the effects of Semblances and Dust in the vicinity, without the other person noticing that it has inverted. For example, Famine would start giving people their Aura instead of draining it.
OH HELL YEAH

ROTTMNT Michelangelo x My Female OC - CHAPTER 1 : THE MEETING
The story takes place after Krang's defeat. All characters are adults.
Warning : none, except english errors (sorry for that !) and little argument bteween Raph and Leo ; Raphael is super protective and Mikey is too girly for OC ; Favorite villain here ! Hope you will like it !
A nice summer day for a solo journey. Michelangelo was peacefully eating an icecream when his phone rings :
“Chello~?” He says with a playfull smirk.
“Mikey ? Where are you ?” Asks Raphael “You said you will not be long and it's been two hours ! Everything's okay, buddy ?”
“I'm fine, Raph. I finish eating my icecream and…”
“Icecream ?!” Repeat Leonardo, offended “Did I heard correctly ? It's hot as hell down here and you dare to eat an icecream without us ? High treason ! I can't believe my own little brother would do such a thing to me !”
“Okay Leo, we get it !” Stoppes Raphael who takes back the phone “Mikey, go buy us icecreams and come back home.”
“Yes sir~...”
He hangs up.
Oh, he wishes to stay here a few others hours. Besides, the sun is setting like a nice cherry on the cake. Can't he stay and watch ? The young turtle looks around and smiles : oh yes, he can. And what better spot than a skyscaper ? His brothers will wait a little more.
With his manriki gusari, he reached a high dish to see the whole show.
He opens his arms and welcomes the lasts shafts of sunlight. The sky becomes a beautiful mix of orange and pink. What a sight ! Pure bliss !
The sun disapears, his arms fells down. Michelangelo was about to leave when someone appears from nowhere. He didn't pay attention before but he was on a rooftop. And a luxury one in fact ! Big swimming pool, home garden, a good set of garden furniture.
Michelangelo hides in the shadows, observing the human under him. Well, he trought it was a human until he sees a big snake tail ! A yokai ? Michelangelo isn't rassured, surely because he's a turtle. Time to go, he thinks.
But a noice betrays him and immediately the yokai attacks him !
In one second, it's pulling him into its coils and starting a constriction. Michelangelo is trapped, unable to move one finger. The giant snake opens wide its jaw, hissing agressively and showing its huge fangs.
Michelangelo tries to escape, to catch his weapon, in vain. His body hurts, he feels his flow blood slowy stopping and the air missing his lungs.
All of a sudden, a big white dog, a pyrenean mountain dog precisely, arrives and bounces happily between them.
The yokai releases Michelangelo who fells on the ground. Quickly he catches his breath, before the dog comes to lick his face cheerfully.
“Are you okay ?” He hears next to him.
When he opens his eyes, he came face to face with a beautiful girl with long, very long, wavy blond hair and pretty blue eyes surrounded by numerous topaz like a light mask.
Her angel face makes Michelangelo out of breath again.
“I apologize for attacking you.” She says with a light voice “I trought you were after me.”
Michelangelo couldn't answer, eyes and moutg wide open, until the dog licks him again and wakes him up :
“No problem !” He says with an awkward smile “I shouldn't come in your rooftop without permission !”
“Come here, Fable.”
The big dog sits near its mistress. Michelangelo notices the low part of the girl's body is still in snake form. A big white snake. But instead scales, there is fuzz. He was so scared that he didn't even notice it when he was trapped in her coils. Now he couldn't believe that the beautiful girl in front of him was a terrifying beast who tried to eat him a few minutes ago.
“What's your name ?” She asks.
“M-Mikey.”
Michelangelo is surprised to stutter whereas he's normally in ease with people.
“Mine is Eva. Nice to meet you, Mikey.” She shakes warmly his hand “Would you like to stay with me a little more ? I usually don't have much visit.”
Obviously, if you attack them !, thinks Michelangelo.
She invites him to sit on sun chairs.
They start to discuss, the dog laying next to their foot. Eva likes to sing and dance, and skateboard like Michelangelo, and follows amateur artits on social medias. The turtle shows her some artists he follows too and then his own art. His ego growing as Eva compliments him with admiration.
They finally relax and open to each other. Eva lives with her father, an important manager, but she's alone most of time because of his job. She had friends before but they left because of her lifestyle and her father's stern attitude. Michelangelo feels much sympathy for the poor girl.
With the flow of the discussion, they leave the sun chairs and walk around the swimming pool, and then sit on the sill, foot on the water, to watch videos on Michelangelo's phone.
Suddenly the phone rings : Raphael ! Michelangelo didn't realize what time it was :
“He's going to kill me for sure.”
“I'm so sorry. I would never ask you to stay if I had known it causes you troubles.”
“You're kidding, right ? I liked talking with you, it was fun ! I will come again.”
“Really ? Thank you !”
She was so happy that she hugs him. Michelangelo doesn't know where he should put his hands ; it wasn't so hard with April, so why now ?! The feeling was so different… And Eva smells like vanilla…
“What the hell is happening here ?!” Roars a strong voice behind them.
A huge and furious man with white slicked hairs approaches them.
“Father !” Calls Eva.
“Father ?” Repeats Michelangelo, surprised to see a human.
The man turns his cufflink and a bright light is wraping him up and revealing his true appareance.
Michelangelo shudders : Bruce, the leader of the Masters of Barbarianism !
He was already upset to see his daughter with a stranger, he's raging when he recognizes Michelangelo, the bold one who humiliated him at Hueso's restaurant !
“How dare you showing your bastard toadface in my house ?!” The dragon fumes.
“Father, please calm down !” Begs Eva, who has no clue about what happened between these two “Everything is okay, Mikey is my friend…”
“Your friend, this coward in the pay of the Makers of Brutality ?! I told you I didn't want to see you with a boy until you're fifty, he certainly won't be the exception !”
“A boy ? Mikey isn't a boy…”
Silence. Eva looks at Michelangelo who couldn't believe what he just hears :
“Did you think I was a girl ?!”
“Well… Yes, I did.”
“But WHY ?!”
“I don't know ! Maybe your voice… It's kind of acute… And my dog doesn't like boys normally.”
They were both so embarrassed that they didn't look at each other anymore. Eva's is bright red behind her hands when she whispers :
“Oh no, I hugged a boy…”
Bruce sees red : he thought the dumbass turtle brings dishonour on his precious daughter ! Flames are coming out his nostrils, he takes his katana and jumps right on Michelangelo ! The turtle escapes in time and flies far away from the rooftop, hearing Bruce's screams of rage.
If he managed to escape from Bruce, he doesn't even try with Raphael.
The red turtle was way too much worried to let his little brother explains why he's running late.
Fortunatly Leonardo comes to complain about the missing icecreams, giving Michelangelo the chance to tell the whole story to his brothers.
The moment he told them about Eva, he caughted immediatly their attention : the fact that Eva is the daughter of a crime-gang's boss worried Raphael, while Donatello et Leonardo were intrigued by “angel face” and “pretty girl” terms Michelangelo used to describe her, with this nice kind of sparks in his eyes and this dumb grin on his face. Oh man, that was a very interessing reaction.
But as intrigued as they were, they are all rolling with laughter when Michelangelo said Eva mistaked him with a girl !
“That's not funny !” Grumbles the young turtle “I'm not girly !”
“Forget it.” Says Raphal as he patted his shoulder “It's not like you will see her again !”
Michelangelo avoided his gaze, Raphael frowned :
“You don't attend to see her again, don't you ?”
“Well…”
“Mikey, she's a mafia guy's daughter !”
“So what ? She's my friend ! It's not her fault that his dad is a villain !”
“You put yourself in danger with her !”
“I agree with Raph.” Says Donatello “You should forget her, she doesn't deserve a friend like you.”
“Oh, that's so ?! What exactly do you know about her ?!”
His anger surprised his brothers.
Michelangelo releases himself from Raphael's grip and goes straight to his room.
Leonardo stoppes Raphael to follow him :
“I got this, trust me.”
Even if he's letting Leonardo go, Raphael isn't rassured.
The blue turtle gets his head in his little brother's room. Now he's reading comics in his hammock, turning his back to the door.
“Hey little bro. May I come in ?”
Michelangelo mutters something, Leonardo takes it as a yes and sits next to him, smirking :
“She's that pretty ?”
“Yes. And she's alone. Instead her father, I was the first person to talk with her since a long time. It's so sad.”
“Oh, I see~... Rapunzel in her ivory tower.”
The blunt sound of the comic on Michelangelo's legs mades Leonardo jump.
“See ?! You're judging without knowing her !”
“Hey, calm down, little brother. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to mocking her. You really care about her, right ?”
Michelangelo blushes a little. Of course he cares about her.
“It's just… She's a nice girl, you know. She doesn't deserve to be alone like that. If I don't go back to her, I feel like I'm betraying her.”
“So you don't have a choice : you have to see her again.”
Michelangelo thought he was mishearing. But Leonardo has a knowing smile :
“Go back to her, idiot.”
Michelangelo jumps into his brother's arms, so happy :
“Thank you ! Thank you ! I love you, Leo !”
“Yeah, yeah.” Smiles the blue one “Try to come back in one piece, though.”
A few minutes later, when Leonardo leaves the room, Raphael was waiting for him, much less pleased than his blue brother.
“That's how you got this ?” He growls.
“What ? He's in a good mood again !”
“But he doesn't change his mind !”
“You can't change his mind, Raph.”
“So tell me why you even talked to him ?! You gave him your permission where I put my prohibition !”
“Mikey is not a kid anymore, he doesn't need permission, mine or yours. He would have gone back to this girl anyway. I just made sure he will not act out of anger. Now he will be careful. Trust him a little.”

Rebirth of the Ninja Turtles
My concept for a new TMNT cartoon taking pieces from various continuities. Plot: Long ago in Japan a ninja and his children are about to be executed by their enemy when the man vows that even if it takes lifetimes this day will be avenged. Centuries later in New York a truck carrying a strange mutagenic compound crashes into a pet store spilling the chemical on the animals within as well as many others near by. Mutated by the substance a rat and six turtles flee into the sewers as memories of their past lives return. Teaching his children the art of ninja once more the rat, now calling himself Splinter names them after various artists. Years later they learn the man who ordered their execution has been reborn as the Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan of ninja. Splinter makes it their mission to stop him and complete the vow he made centuries ago. Heroes: Splinter- Once the ninja known as Hamato Yoshi he has been reborn as a rat. He is initially horrified at his new form but takes it as a lesson to remain humble as he remembers his past arrogance. In time he must decide what matters most, the love of his children or his desire for revenge. He represents the element of wood and uses a staff or a katana in battle. Leonardo- The eldest turtle and the one who takes after their father the most. He is strict and serious in combat and training but relaxed and friendly outside of it. He is the most dedicated to their mission of stopping the Shredder. He is skilled at numerous weapons. He represents the element of air and is armed with twin ninjaken, a smaller dagger and a bow and arrow. He wears a blue bandana. Raphael- Physically the strongest of the Turtles he hates to see people bullied by those stronger than them. He’ll often go out on his own and look for trouble. During one of these solo trips he met Casey Jones and the two became friends, after beating the stuffing out of each other first. He is skilled at demolition and the use of explosives. He represents the element of fire and is armed with twin sai, tonfa and a series of small bombs. He wears a red bandana. Artemisia- Out of all of the Turtles she is the most bitter about having to remain hidden from humanity, questioning why they protect people who would turn on them if they knew the truth. She is the most brutal in battle often seeking to end a threat permanently only for her brothers to talk her out of it. She represents the element of metal and is armed with twin arm claws and a set of kunai. She wears a yellow bandana. Donatello- The smartest of the Turtles he adapted the fastest to modern technology. He builds all the gear for the Turtles including multiple modified vehicles and numerous weapons. He is skilled at gathering information electronically without a trace. He represents the element of earth and is armed with a metallic bo staff with a hidden blade inside. He wears a purple bandana. Venus- The most spiritual of the Turtles she is a pacifist who studies chi. She uses her knowledge to provide medical assistance to her siblings when needed. If she is forced to fight she can use her knowledge of pressure points to take down foes without harming them. She represents the element of lightning and when she must join the fight she is armed with a rope dart. She wears a light green bandana. Michelangelo- The youngest of the Turtles he is the most joyful and friendly of the Turtles. He also questions their mission the most wondering why they can’t just enjoy the new life they were given instead of being forced to follow a vow they themselves didn’t make. He is skilled in the art of disguise and can disguise himself so well even his own brothers cannot tell though his sisters can see right through them. He uses this to blend in with groups and gather information from the streets as well as establish a group of friends and contacts. He represents the element of water and is armed with twin nunjacku, a grappling hook and a manriki-gusari. He wears an orange bandana. Allies: April O’Neil- When young she witnessed the truck crash into the pet store and even saw the Turtles and Splinter through the smoke. However nobody believed her and the incident was covered up. She dedicated her life since then to proving the truth of that day and has tracked down stories of mutants with her friend Irma. Eventually she is rescued by the Turtles and befriends them, becoming their strongest link to the outside world. Casey Jones- Formerly a cop Casey quit the force after witnessing one too many cops get away with abusing their power. He becomes a vigilante who protects those the law ignores. He uses sports equipment in combat. He met Raphael and became quick friends with the Turtle after a fight. He often backs up the Turtles on missions when he isn’t busy protecting the homeless. His favorite weapon is a baseball bat. Porkchop- A butcher mutated by the chemical into a pig man. He runs an underground kitchen to feed the homeless and vulnerable. Though he loathes violence he will not hesitate to protect those within his kitchen. Hippo Houdini- A street magician mutated by the chemicals into a hippo man. He entertains people by pretending to be in a costume. When he was revealed as a mutant he surprisingly gained more attention and set out to use the spotlight to highlight mutant rights.
Leatherhead- A kind fisher who was mutated into a humanoid alligator. He uses his newfound strength to defend people while trying to make a living selling the fish he catches.
Mondo Gecko- A street artist mutated into a lizard man. He is friends with Mikey and uses his art to leave messages for his bro.
Alopex- A mutated fox woman who often joins forces with Raph to stop those who would exploit mutants. Nightowl- A night watchman mutated into an owl man. He keeps an eye on trouble at night and acts as a contact for the Turtles. Todd- A therapist mutated into a capybara who helps the Turtles after particularly stressful missions. Chamoleon- A mutated chameleon who operates a social media site for mutants to contact each other. She reaches out to Donnie to respond to any calls for help she finds. Rahzar and Tokka- A mutated wolf and snapping turtle respectively. They protect an area in Central Park from all those who would do the innocent harm. And others... Enemies: Shredder- The ancient ninja reborn. In this lifetime he took control of the Foot Clan by force and turned it into an international crime syndicate. When he finds out Splinter and his children have returned he makes it his mission to kill them once more. Bebop and Rocksteady- A pair of goons mutated by Shredder to act as enforcers. Dogpound and Fishface- A washed up martial artist and a hitman mutated by Shredder to add to his forces. Mama Long Legs- A woman who runs an underground fighting ring, mutated into a spider woman she now forces mutants to fight for the amusement of others while keeping her own mutation hidden. Groundchuck and Dirtbag- A pair of bank robbers who accidentally steal some mutagen and expose themselves while hiding on a farm. Crabgrass- An environmentalist mutated into a crab plant hybrid who seeks to claim the world for plants.  Old Hob- Leader of a mutant mob who run a protection racket. Aided by his right hand man Repo Mantis Tora- A bounty hunter who mutated himself into a tiger man to gain enhanced strength and senses. SpiderBitez- A shock jock mutated into a spider. He'll stop at nothing to regain his fame even if it means capturing audiences to force them to listen to his show. Baxter Stockman- A scientist who believes in human superiority. Will do whatever it takes to rid the world of “genetic abominations” And others... Other: Karai- A mysterious ninja of unknown loyalty. She accuses both Splinter and Shredder of violating the honor of the Foot Clan and wages war on them both. She is joined by Koya, a mutated falcon and Zodi a mutated scorpion. Rak- A mutated racoon who acts as a master thief with his own set of rules. Sometimes he’ll aid the Turtles if he can spin it to his advantage otherwise he’s content to take what he’s after and leave.
Slash- A mutated turtle who was found by some criminals who tricked him into using his strength to help commit crimes. Outraged when he learned of the betrayal he grew bitter towards all mankind and seeks to be left alone. Shard- A mutated cat who sometimes aids the Turtles from the shadows. The reincarnation of Splinter’s wife and the Turtle’s mother.

fans of rise may get a kick out of mirage #9... a PRE-teen mnt story where they all have full skull cap style masks, leo only has one sword, mikey's got a weighted chain weapon (manriki gusari) and raph has tonfas... also their helping a family pass on its ancestral spirits to the last of its line...
[if you can also deal with the inherent japanese mysticism in that. also the little preteens doing murder....]

Ninja - Manriki Gusari | Weapon Series
This is one of the simplest weapon used by ninjas, it is helpful mostly for defense or to freeze the opponent and disable to make any further movement. The chain like weapon is thrown to the opponent and the ninja tries to stop any further movement or any body part like hand or legs of the opponent...

I want to know, what do you think is the most accurate aspect of ninjutsu that the turtles use and why?
As much as I want to say something like adaptability or their many different examples of stealth, I've already covered that before. So, the most accurate ninja aspect the turtles have is, surprisingly enough, their living conditions.
While a ninja would never live in a sewer (stealth requires you to not smell bad), they were never traditionally wealthy. If anything, they often bordered on poverty. So much so that actual ninja gear (kama, kusarigama, manriki gusari, kunai and shuriken) were all just retooled farm equipment and scrap metal. They couldn't really afford to constantly purchase and upkeep swords.
In Ninja Turtles media, we often see them digging through dumpsters and landfills for spare parts. The 2003 series even had then befriend a group of homeless people at the dump. Donnie is often seen jury rigging his tech out of old electronics he stumbled on. If they had access to such resources, less well off ninja would probably learn to make do like this. As much as I harp on the 2012 series, the fact that all that gear is obviously recycled is so in point for how traditional ninja worked is astonishing.
As well, while it is rarely covered in universe, I imagine the turtles would often spend a lot of time on weapon maintenance. Good Katana are hard to come by, so Leo probably takes good care if his swords. (I also love how the 2003 turtles had spare weapons in their vehicles. It's so ninja of them.)

Warrior Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Not How We Do Business
https://ift.tt/2T1QvlP
This Warrior review contains spoilers.
Warrior Season 2 Episode 3
“Not How We Do Business” sums up the latest episode of Warrior in two ways. First, it’s a line that Zing (Dustin Nguyen) lays on O’Hara (Kieran Biew) when he finally breaks away from being a debt collector for the Fung Hai. “Not how we do business” also works on a meta level, this episode only has one Kung Fu fight. That’s weak for a Bruce Lee inspired show. There are two other fight scenes, but they’re scrappy brawls the likes of which can be found in any action drama.
Bruce Lee fans want Kung Fu, and not just any Kung Fu. As part of the Little Dragon’s legacy, it must be great Kung Fu. The lone Kung Fu scene in this episode is good and serves to introduce a pivotal new character, but that’s not enough. It’s not how we do business.
This episode begins with a missed opportunity where Ah Sahm (Anthony Koji) is in the Barbary Coast Fight Pit, facing off against another challenger. That would be great, but the fight is already over. The opening shot focuses upon his burly challenger, but he has already been knocked out and is just standing stunned, then there’s a shot of Ah Sahm, and then the challenger falls.
Seriously? No Kung Fu? Starting in the Fight Pit is fine dramatically but shortchanging the audience out of a fight is not the way to go for this show. It’s a big ripe piece of low hanging fruit left to rot. Bruce Lee fans crave gratuitous Kung Fu. Whenever Warrior goes to the Fight Pit, there had better be a fight.
After that, Ah Sahm’s fight manager Vega (Maria-Elena Laas) teases him with the promise of a bigger purse in some other international arena, a place where Warrior will hopefully go at some point this season, but not in this episode. Chao (Hoon Lee) pulls Ah Sahm aside and implies that he knows about the molasses plot that he and Young Jun (Jason Tobin) are cooking up, and that he’s concerned over Ah Sahm’s rivalry with Mai Ling (Dianne Doan). Chao comments “I don’t see any version of that ending well” which comes as no surprise to anyone. If this all ended well, there’d be no fight scenes.
Enter Hong – the New Guy in the Hop Wei
The centerpiece of the episode is the introduction of a new character, Hong (Chen Tang). Chen Tang just portrayed Yao in the new Mulan. In the original Disney animated film, Yao was Mulan’s hard ass comrade, and in contrast, he’s the shortest character (unless you count Mushu and Cri-Kee). The live action Mulan changed a lot – Yao was still the hard ass, but now he’s 6 feet tall and a less significant role. Nevertheless, Chen is a great addition to Warrior, exuding a southern charm because he was raised in Memphis and has a natural southern accent in real life, but he covers that up for Warrior.

Warrior Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Learn to Endure, or Hire a Bodyguard
By Gene Ching
Hong arrives ‘fresh off the boat’ with a batch of new recruits, hatchet men ordered from China by Father Jun (Perry Yung). Their appearance makes Young Jun nervous that Father Jun might be on to his non-Chinese molasses scheme. He’s also suspicious of Hong’s attempts to weasel his way in with them. Nonetheless, Young Jun and Ah Sahm agree to take Hong to a brothel. There Ah Sahm discovers Hong is gay but sympathetically keeps that secret.
After that, the threesome stumble across some Fung Hai gangsters in the streets and Hong, either eager to impress or just hungry to kick some ass, takes them all out by himself. It’s a good introduction and reveals his expertise with whip chain. A whip chain is a traditional Chinese weapon, one that can be easily concealed as a trusty everyday carry for a Tong man. Chen Tong delivers a decent first fight scene with it. As weapons go, the whip chain requires more skill to wield than a nunchaku. Hong deploys both the whip chain’s striking and entangling methods proficiently, although the scene is in a dark alley and the shadows can conceal a multitude of sins. Chen Tong lists skills in Stage Combat, Karate, Kung Fu and Tai Chi on his resume and claims he did some preparation for the role of Hong studying Chinese whip chain and the Japanese equivalent manriki-gusari.
One of the best things about Warrior is the relationship between Ah Sahm and Young Jun. They have an earnest chemistry as two gangsters being gangsters, delivering beat downs, slinging molasses, and chasing sticky. This camaraderie is commonplace for buddy films and TV partners but it’s exceedingly rare and delightfully refreshing to see this for two Asian men in a Western production. Both Ah Sahm and Young Jun have a lot to prove and their connection is palpable. Hong brings a new lighter tone as the third wheel to their partnership. They already seem to be bonding as a threesome which is promising for the rest of the season.
In the Room Where It Happens
Mai Ling (Dianne Doan) and Li Yong (Joe Taslim) pay a visit to the Fung Hai lair so she can scold Zing (Dustin Nguyen). Walking into Zing’s room is a gutsy move for Mai Ling, but with Li Yong at her side, she’s fearless. Zing agrees to Mai Ling’s terms, but not before she shares a ritual drink of mare’s milk with him. Mare’s milk, or Kumis, is a unique fermented drink because few alcoholic beverages are dairy derived. It’s usually not that strong, nor is it the disgusting chunky chowder depicted in Warrior but the Mongols are stereotyped as barbarians, just as they were in Mulan, so it’s depicted as revolting. Mongolians are poorly represented in film and television. Project their media depictions upon any other race and the generally disparaging tone is evident.
On the way out, a Fung Hai thug gets up in Li Yong’s face and gets throat punched for his trouble. Don’t mess witjj Li Yong. Knowing Li Yong could destroy his crew, Zing calls off his man saying “Be thankful for your pain. It means you’re still alive.”
Much to Li Yong’s dismay, Mai Ling echoes this line towards the end of the episode, making him wonder if his boss is headed down the wrong path like Zing. While everyone in Warrior has their dark side, Zing has emerged as the villain with no redeemable qualities. Taslim brings a guarded nobility to Li Yong as Warrior’s most badass fighter; he’s loyal to Mai Ling, his lover and boss, but not blindly so. This, along with Taslim’s martial expertise, makes Li Yong one of the more intriguing characters. Mai Ling, like most of the rest of the cast, is another character with a lot to prove.

Later, Zing, being the barbarous Mongol villain, threatens Chao (Hoon Lee) over delivering weapons. Chao, always the manipulator, discusses Zing with Mai Ling. Then later, Chao meets with Li Yong alone. Over bowls of noodles, Chao proposes a way to avoid war, teasing some coming intrigue to take Zing down. Everyone is aligning against Zing and the anticipation of this inevitable showdown is promising.
Sophie (Celine Buckens) sneaks into Leary’s (Dean Jagger) back room at the Banshee and finds his map of factories that use coolies. While she’s smart enough to realize that Leary is behind the factory firebombing, she somehow overlooks that Mercer Steel has got to be among those circled on that map too. Clearly her sister’s company is on the Irish workers hit list because they were beating up the coolies headed to Mercer until Penny (Joanna Vanderham) hired the Hop Wei for protection against them. Sophie and Leary finally hook up and Leary unwittingly echoes Chao saying, “This isn’t going to end well.” By now, the audience is well aware it’s not going to end well and has their collective fingers crossed that it will end in a massive Kung Fu fight at the very least.
As they have a post-coital stroll, Sophie suggests that Leary get into politics with a nod to Hamilton by suggesting he should “be in the room where it happens.” Leary calls Sophie out when she says she “knows.” She’s an entitled upper-class woman and hasn’t seen the tragedy that Leary has. He tells Sophie of some of the horrors he witnesses, of friends and family starving, and starts to pull away from her until she draws him back. It gives Leary more context.
Given the era, Leary likely escaped the Great Irish Famine (1945-1849). Over a quarter million Irish emigrated to the New World and Leary would be part of that generation. The Irish are struggling too. During that period, Irish immigrants made up most of San Francisco’s working class and about one-third of the city’s population. This is another way Warrior sheds light upon a dark period of history.
Police Beatdowns
The other two fight scenes come from the cops. The first is short. Lee (Tom Weston-Jones) returns to Nora’s (Gaosi Raditholo) tavern where he got rolled last episode to exact revenge. He goes full copper, night-sticking and shooting up the joint until he gets his cash back. With Lee, Weston-Jones is echoing his role as Kevin “Corky” Corcoran, in his previous TV show Copper. Corky was an Irish detective in a period drama set in the late 18th century, the same era as Warrior. This is not so much of a bar fight as it is a cop taking out a few unarmed barflies.
When a debtor’s wife flashes a gratuitous boob at O’Hara, offering him sex to pay her husband’s bills to the Fung Hai, it’s the last straw and he finally quits the Fung Hai. Even though O’Hara has repaid his debt, Zing exacts revenge by sending Tong men to invade his home and threaten his family. This happens right after dinner where Lee had been their guest. Lee comes to the rescue, revolver blazing, and a scrappy bit of violence ensues where O’Hara’s son and wife must defend themselves too. It’s a brutal sanguineous scene, leaving everyone dead or splattered with blood, ending this episode in a bloody mess.
