~ Mapledurham Watermill ~
Mapledurham Watermill is a historic watermill in the civil parish of Mapledurham in the English county of Oxfordshire. It is driven by the head of water created by Mapledurham Lock and Weir, on the River Thames. The mill was built in the 15th century, and further extended in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. It is a grade II* listed building and is preserved in an operational state.
The mill building is best known, and has gained worldwide recognition, for being featured on the cover of heavy metal band Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album in 1970

LOUISA LIVINGSTONE the black-robed woman on the cover of Black Sabbath's debut, has spoken about the experience in recognition of the album. At the time, Livingstone was a model in her late teens, and photographer Keith "Keef" Macmillan chose her, in part because she was only five feet tall, thereby making the scenery around her look big. Macmillan chose Oxfordshire's Mapledurham Watermill, a historic building that dates back to the 15th century, because he thought it fit the dark, gothic sound of the band, and the two went there one morning.
“I remember it was freezing cold,” she told, “I had to get up at about 4 o’clock in the morning. Keith was rushing around with dry ice, throwing it into the water. It didn’t seem to be working very well, so he ended up using a smoke machine. It was just, ‘Stand there and do that.’ I’m sure he said it was for Black Sabbath, but I don’t know if that meant anything much to me at the time.”
“She wasn’t wearing any clothes under that cloak because we were doing things that were slightly more risqué, but we decided none of that worked,” he added. “Any kind of sexuality took away from the more foreboding mood. But she was a terrific model. She had amazing courage and understanding of what I was trying to do.”
Despite her work on the cover, Livingstone, now an electronic musician who works under the name Indreba, never gravitated towards the music. But for Macmillan, the cover shoot was an entry into a whole new world. “To be honest, it was the first time I really enjoyed that kind of heavy rock,” he said. “But that album made me a fan for life.”

N° 243 Black Sabbath, ‘Black Sabbath’ 1970
Tumblr media
Me asustó muchísimo”.

Mysterious Musicians #4: Louise (Black Sabbath...sort of)
Today’s entry isn’t necessarily a musician, but she fits just as well. "Louise” is allegedly the name of the woman on the front cover of Black Sabbath’s self-titled 1970 debut LP. The photograph features Louise dressed in a black cloak and standing in front of the centuries-old Mapledurham Watermill, and is often cited as being “unnerving” and having a “supernatural” atmosphere about it.
Why is she mysterious?
"Louise” left as quickly as she came; she disappeared almost immediately after the photoshoot and never contacted the band again. Guitarist Tony Iommi says that she was a model/actress who appeared backstage after a live performance and introduced herself to the band, who hired her for the day to appear on the cover. Iommi also claims that the band have all since forgotten her name, though multiple sources claim it was in fact Louise.
The mystery surrounding her is compounded by theories that she isn’t even the figure in the photograph, and that the tale of "Louise” may have been created for the sake of adding some mystique to the cover. Some claim that the woman is Bill Ward’s wife, while others even think it may be Ozzy Osbourne himself, but considering that neither Ward’s wife, Osbourne, nor any other Sabbath associates have come out with the “true” account after so long, I think it’s safe to say that Louise was real and is the woman on the cover. Osbourne’s hair definitely wasn’t that long at thetime, and while I DID attempt to look into more about Ward’s wife, I found nothing (no name, photos, age, etc.), which does kind of strike me as odd, but she’s likely just a private person.
What we know:
Her name may have been Louise
She appeared at a Sabbath show and was hired for the day
She disappeared after the shoot and hasn’t spoken publicly about it even after the album’s tremendous success
What we don’t know:
If her name was indeed Louise, or what her surname was
Where she is now
If the mystery figure is really her and not Ward’s Wife, Osbourne, etc.
Footnote: Some people have reported that Louise appears to be holding something in the picture. Reports on what the object is have ranged from a black cat, a stick/shovel, a dark sheet/cloth of some kind, or just part of the cloak she’s wearing. I think the last choice is the most likely, but I’d be sufficiently more creeped out if it was a cat or shovel.

Will the real Toad Hall please stand up?
Ever wondered where author Kenneth Grahame got inspiration for the picturesque setting of The Wind in the Willows? When it comes to the infamous grandeur of Toad Hall, it’s not so clear. In fact, at least three local estates claim to be the residence of our dear Mr Toad.
“Rounding a bend in the river, they came in sight of a handsome, dignified old house of mellowed red brick, with well-kept lawns reaching down to the water's edge.”
Mapledurham House
Tumblr media
Mapledurham House is a 12th century house and farming estate on the banks of the Thames in the heart of the village of Mapledurham. The estate, with its church, watermill, golf course and team rooms, have been a popular setting for films and TV programmes such as The Eagle has Landed, Ms Marple and Midsomer Murders.
Mapledurham is close the town of Pangbourne where Grahame lived for several years and EH Shephard’s illustrations of Toad Hall for the original edition of The Wind In The Willows bear a striking resemblance to Mapledurham. It is also believed that the nearby Quarry Wood is the setting of Mole getting caught in the storm and is rescued by Ratty.
Hardwick House
Tumblr media
Formerly the site of a Saxon house owned by the de Hardwick family, Hardwick house as it stands today is a Tudor mansion which has been described as a “magnet of the literary community” in the early 1900s. Grahame was a regular visitor to the house and it is believed that the character of Toad is a loving caricature of his friend Sir Charles Day Rose, who bought the house in 1909.
Like Toad, Rose was a lover for fast cars and would often don his motoring goggles to go for a ride. The garden was also used by Henry James as the setting for The Portrait of a Lady. Rose’s family still own and live in Hardwick today, with Sir Julian Rose claiming the title of “only milkman in England with a title” as he milks his own cows and makes deliveries to the tenants on his estate.
Fawley Court
Tumblr media
Our third Toad Hall is Fawley Court. Located on the border of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, the house on the edge of the waterfront perfectly resembles the description in Grahame’s novel. Repurposed as a decoding facility along with Bletchley Park during WW2, it was later used as a boarding school and was finally bought and restored by Aida Dellal Hersham in 2008.
