Crate Digger’s Corner: Marco Benevento Surfs Into The Turf!

11/09/2019…The Turf Club, St. Paul, MN
It’s a chilly, fall night but the crowd around The Turf Club is bubbling with anticipation. They are outside the door and littered around the club waiting for Marco Benevento, the headliner, to come to the stage. Probably best known through his early-2000’s jamband, Benevento/Russo Duo, he has continued to evolve his sound through various sounds and genres moving to some avant-garde jazz for a few albums and then taking his music towards a more typical pop sound. That leads us to the trio he takes the stage with on this night, which along with the entire touring staff were wearing white T-Shirts that said “We’re Using Time For Fun” in basic black lettering. As soon as the band, with a female bass player/backup singer and drummer, the group opened with what sounded like one of his more abstract instrumentals before dropping into the more pop songs, including a large number that are found on his new album “Let It Slide”. That album matched the sound of the night, which was in the vein of electro-funk/pop and a little reminiscent of The Gorillaz. Throughout the night (and I will admit that I haven’t followed him very closely through his pop phase up to this point, so I really was not familiar with any of the songs he was playing) in instrumental songs, or sections of songs, he continuously dropped teases to well-known songs especially of the 80’s and early 90’s vintage which is where the influence of the new album lies. Quotes that I caught within songs included Led Zeppelin’s ‘Living Loving Maid (She’s Just A Woman)’, Suzanne Vega’s ‘Tom’s Diner’, INXS’s ‘I Need You Tonight’ and Bananarama’s ‘Cruel Summer’. As furiously as he was throwing the teases out there, I wouldn’t be surprised if I had some of them fly past me as well. He had the crowd up and dancing throughout his 90 minute set and sent everyone off into the night with a bounce in their step.

El Michels Affair released a new track "Life of Pablo" from their highly anticipated new album “Adult Themes”. History of this album began in 2017, when Leon Michels, leader of the El Michels Affair, in between other musical project began creating compilations of short interludes intended to be sampled by hip hop producers.
Some of them end up on songs by Jay Z & Beyonce or Travis Scott. These minute-long snippets were inspired by the dense moody work of ‘60s composers like David Axelrod, as well as Moondog’s brand of classical jazz.
Michels liked so much creating these instrumentals that he decided to expand on some of the ideas and create what would become the soundtrack for a movie that has yet to be made, an imaginary film entitled “Adult Themes.”

Michels played with Soul Fire Records house band The Mighty Imperials before forming his own ensemble in 2002, and a band’s full-length album was released on the Michels-cofounded label Truth & Soul Records in 2005.
After performing with Raekwon at a concert, the group began working with other members of the Wu-Tang Clan. By 2009, this had yielded an album's worth of material, which was released in 2009 as "Enter the 37th Chamber", the name a play on the album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)". El Michels Affair followed this with a second album of arrangements of songs by Wu-Tang Clan and from its members' solo releases, titled "Return to the 37th Chamber".
Michels helped found The Menahan Street Band, co-produced Lee Fields album “My World”, Aloe Blacc’s “Good Things”, Dr John, and Lana Del Rey and received a writer credit on Adele’s Grammy-nominated album, “19”. Later he joined The Black Keys on tour and became a member of psych-rock project, The Arcs. In 2016, Michels co-founded Big Crown Records, which is releasing now his latest effort.
