The good news is that you can actually create a structure of your own! Many scholars contribute to their fields independently, so it may be worth considering a personal research project that you can work on at your own pace (which has its advantages). Public libraries often provide access to academic databases like JSTOR, and your alma mater might have resources available to alumni. Communities and forums online are a good way to reach others who are feeling similar and doing similar things.

Your writing also doesn't have to stop! If it's not your only focus it may go quite a bit slower, but many journals accept submissions from independent researchers. In addition, platforms like Medium and Substack may allow you to self-publish some of your work. You could even look into pitching guest posts for relevant publications!

It doesn't have to be a permanent goodbye to academia either. Does your alma mater welcome guest lecturers, or are there any community workshops in your area? These are some ways you could share your passions with others. Plus, academia will always be there–if an opportunity arises for you to return and it aligns with your circumstances, you can.

I've spent a long, long while trying to find anything about Quentin Dean and her relationship with Elvis during making of Stay Away Joe (that's why I took so long so answer you) - from Youtube videos to movie magazines articles, but unfortunately I still haven't.

Strangely, Quentin Dean retired pretty quick from Hollywood, after only 4 movies done and very few one-episode appearances in some Western TV shows.

Her acting career (TV and movies) lasted from 1967 to 1969, two years, and it's just bizarre since she was nominated for a Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress due to her first role on the big screen on the Oscar winner movie (Best Picture) 'In the Heat of the Night' (1967). This movie was released the same year Quentin filmed Stay Away Joe with Elvis (filmed from October 9 to November 27, 1967, released on March 8, 1968).

Quentin Dean prepared for her screen test for the Academy Award Winner movie In The Heat of the Night (1967).

Curiously enough, other than the movies, one of the few TV shows Quentin worked on was The Virginian, created by - guess who! - Charles Marquis Warren, director/producer/screenwriter of Charro! (1969 *updated for minor correction on date -- 'Charro!' was filmed during July and August of 1968 and released in 1969*). Quentin appeared in only one episode of that show, but even so, why would she give up her acting career so fast? She surely had good network in Hollywood... that's just weird. What's worse is that it seems she rarely gave interviews during her acting career and/or denied interviews after retiring from Hollywood, which would explain why her interviews are so hard to find.

Well, since we're talking about it already, if you ask me I'd say Elvis and Quentin had a pretty good professional relationship but not as close as Elvis and some of his other leading ladies had. Once the online activism devolves into whataboutism over literal terrorist acts or downright blatant antisemitism, I get pissed off. I am seeing this from a lot of the younger generation and also feel like many of them are sort of transferring a lot of the very US/western based sociopolitical problems onto this conflict, specifically calling the people of Israel “colonizers” as if the Jews haven’t been native to that land since biblical times and have just as much, if not more, right to be there than anyone, acting as if they are just western “bad whites” (ignoring that in the US especially, the concept of “white” is very very different then how it is seen in other parts of the world) coming in to oppress. They are boiling down a decades long COMPLEX situation where there currently are NO winners and both sides have done lots of wrong, into a lot of buzzwords and performative activism and very black and white thinking and seeing it fall more and more into overt antisemitism is scary. I wish at the very least, no matter what side you fall on politically, that everyone could have come together to denounce wholly that terrorist like tactics that we’ve seen are an affront to humankind and won’t be supported and it’s ok, and necessary, to denounce them. But the fact most of the people yelling the loudest won’t even do that? And actively get mad at those who do? Yea my faith in humanity is almost gone. I’m glad Noah spoke up. okay I have DONE IT. after many maddening months of listlessly clicking around online I have purchased patio furniture—a table + chairs set for one end of the deck and two slightly oversized rocking chairs for the other end. I decided not to drop $$ on a sofa this summer as I’m broke as hell right now and also not entirely sure how much I’ll use that outdoor space for lounging. all of that cost $710 🫠 but my budget for the deck was $1000 so (sigh) it’s ok. also I suspect I’ll end up returning the kinda pricey dining chairs and getting cheaper ones I can spray paint, which would save me maybe $120-150.

I still need to buy:

a little side table (hopefully a cheap one on marketplace I can spray paint a fun color)

outdoor plants and soil (gotta decide whether I’m doing flowers & herbs or veggies or a mix)

maybe an outdoor rug but I have to scrub down the whole deck with vinegar first to get all the sap up and then see if it comes back or if that was just residue from last year

some kind of spray sealant

possibly one or two of those waterproof wall tapestries to cover the ugly siding… OR I could do tapestry on one wall and a bunch of those hanging planters on the other… but that depends on whether I can drill into that siding (not sure if I can or should). but ooh that would look awfully nice and would be a lovely way to use vertical space for more plants out there. tbd?

Hey look a challenge I can do!! Someday I’ll write new stuff. 😅

This is from an old unfinished The Falcon and the Winter Solider fic that I should probably take off ao3 because it’s unfinished, I left it in a terrible place, and I don’t know if I know how to end it. 🫠 I should just delete, but it’ll probably languish there for all time. That said I really love parts of it, and this one is my favorite. I’m absolutely going to plagiarize myself with it someday.

Sam.

The name rips through him like shrapnel, seizing his lungs and filling his mouth with the taste of blood. He can’t lose Sam, he can lose anything else, he has lost everything else.

Not Sam.

And he knows it makes no sense, three (or eight if you count the snap, he doesn’t) years ago they’d been trying to kill each other, and even after that they’d spent so much time at odds with one another that it started to feel like the normal. Up until the Flag Smashers, Bucky wouldn’t have even called them friends. And that had been fine. He didn’t need to be friends with Sam to know they had each other’s backs.

But somehow Sam snuck up on him, wedged himself in the cracks of Bucky’s armor and pushed until they gave way enough to let the sun in. Sam had planted careful seeds and tended them with invitations to cookouts and quiet nights of unspoken comfort and rude jokes told with warmth in his eyes. And now Bucky is stuck holding all these fragile green shoots, tiny leaves unfurling toward the sky, and he doesn't know what he’s supposed to do with them.

Dear Diary,

I've decided to start writing a diary here, a place where I can pour out my emotions and thoughts without fear of anyone ever stumbling upon it. 🤫

High school can be such a whirlwind of emotions, and I desperately need an outlet to put my feelings on something 🫠.

You see, there's this guy that I'm head over heels in love with, but he doesn't even know I exist lol

Every day, I see him walking through the halls, he is year older. He's …..HOOOOOOT. 😱😭 But there's one problem - he already has a girlfriend.🙂

It's hard for me to understand why he's with her. She seems more interested in the idea of dating someone as attractive as him, rather than truly being in love with him. She's the popular girl, the one everyone adores. With her blond hair and blue eyes, people say she's the most beautiful girl in school. But honestly, I don't see it. To me, she just looks like an average popular girl from any other school.

It's frustrating to watch them together, knowing that I could offer him so much more. I see the way he gazes at her, hoping to find a connection that seems to be missing. I yearn for him to see me 😭

But for now, I'll keep my feelings hidden, locked away inside the pages of this diary. I'll continue to watch him from afar, silently cheering him on in my heart. Maybe, just maybe, someday he'll notice me and see beyond the facade of popularity.🫠

Anyways, let’s get to the small twist of this all lol {DRUM ROLL} 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

You see, for the past two weeks, I have been talking to him on Facebook, but there's a twist to the story - he doesn't know it's me. 😭😂

Let me explain.

I created a fake Facebook account, using a different name and all info, and approached him with a weird shit story lol I told him that I had seen him around and blah blah blah and surprisingly, he went along with it.

The chats have been going on for two weeks now, and we've developed quite a bond. 🫠 We talk about our days (as if I don’t know his day 🥲). It's quite amusing to listen to him sharing his experiences, knowing I already have insight into his life.

I must admit, it's become a bit of a best friend conversation, despite the fact that most of what I've told him is a lie.

However, amidst all these lies, there is one truth that I've stuck to - my name. I may have created a fake persona, but my name remains unchanged. Perhaps it's because deep down, I believe that honesty should be at the core of any relationship, even if it's built on deception.

I find it intriguing how easily we've formed a connection, despite the dishonesty that lurks behind every message. We seem to have a lot in common, and it's effortless to keep our conversations flowing. Yet, there's a part of me that wonders how long I can maintain this charade without it coming crashing down. 😫

I can't help but wonder how he would react if he discovered the truth. Would he be angry, hurt, or understanding? Would he appreciate our connection enough to overlook the lies I've told? It's a risk that I knowingly took, but now it keeps me up at night, wondering about the potential consequences. 😭

As the days pass, the situation with him becomes increasingly complicated. It seems that he is eager to take our online connection to the next level, suggesting meeting up or casually saying hello in person. This puts me in a precarious position, as I am torn between maintaining the facade and coming clean about my true identity.

Whenever he brings up the subject of meeting, I find myself crafting feeble excuses to avoid the situation. 😩 So far, my excuses have been successful in diverting his attention away from the idea. But deep down, I know that this cannot go on forever. Sooner or later, I will have to confront the truth and make a decision about how to proceed.

Maybe I am selfish but let me say one thing - whatever is going on is better than nothing 🥹
