fic stats!

please excuse me bc i was not tagged in this, but i saw this pop up on my dash from some of my non-mutuals and i was OBSESSED - so i did not wait my turn, i've just gone for it :)

most hits: yes, there is a chain and no, you're not on it (schitt's creek) a patrick/david fic i started when there were literally 15 fics for them on ao3 - it's patrick and stevie's text chain for all of the episodes of season four and i still feel smug about some of the things i managed to predict. i think it has the most hits of anything because it was there at the Beginning on ao3, it's got the most chapters, and i did accidentally leave it unfinished for like two years. (oops.) [but it has an incredible podfic!]

second most kudos: the best made plans are your open hands (911) for a fic that kind of walloped me upside the head and made me write it in like... a single evening, the reception on this has been SO sweet!!! an au where maddie takes buck with her when she leaves home at 18. i call it my 'happy healthy buckley verse' and i even have some more headcanons for it in the tag i have for it. in my mind, nothing ever really goes wrong for these two in this verse; it's my emotional support au.

third most comments: i only wanna be alone with you (schitt's creek) another patrick/david fic, this one written for a challenge. (a deadline always increases the likelihood of me finishing a fic.) this is probably (?) the ~sexiest thing i've ever written and it is... like not that explicit lmao. it also had a prompt that made me want to jump out of window bc my secondhand embarrassment threshold is practically zero - but i managed to write something that even my poor little soul could read and enjoy. [technically, 3rd most comments is the previous fic, but this one isn't far off in 4th place.]

fourth most bookmarks: deliver us unto each other (the old guard) this fic is my favorite child. i just think the stuff i love writing and the stuff i'm good at writing collided in this fic in a really lovely way and i'm so stinkin' proud of it. i felt feral while writing it lmao. it's about nicky's complex but deeply earnest and loving relationship with god and how his love for joe actually reaffirms his faith!! plus some great nicky + nile bonding.

fifth most words: i fell heavy into your arms (as the world turns) this is not my favorite of my luke/noah fics but i am very glad one of them made it on the list because all of my longest stuff is for this fandom and i miss nuke an unreasonable amount. those big bang prompts could pull 30k from me, no problem!!! this one's an au where noah is a detective and he has to solve damian's murder - and holden is a suspect :(

and least amount of words: Commandeered (h50) god this one was written so long ago it's still got an uppercase letter in the title 😬 also back in the day when i was still posting individual drabbles as their own fics - i've learned better! this fic represents my intense mcdanno phase, which still lingers in my heart like poison. (or a bomb.) genuinely a delightful prompt tho - an au where danny is the navy SEAL and steve is the jersey transplant. i honestly think i pulled this one off pretty well! they still sound very much like themselves.

i'm sad none of my sparty fics happened to make it in, since that was an Era unto itself but all of these delight me, so!!! here you go!!!

Wip tag game

Tagged by @imsupposedtobewritting for this wip tag game…. And first how dare you! (Affectionate) Yes I am shamed by the length of this list! I am adding a few bonus gifs just to break up the text blocks a bit.

Pro tip: If you want me to work on something listed below my muse really does respond to feedback/comments/gifs/meta posts/stimulation. Make of that what you will.

Family, Familia, ‘Ohana (911/H5O/SWAT, Buddie, McDanno, platonic Deacon/Hondo). I’ve got a chapter title for the next one—SNAFU—and the following one after that—FUBAR. That pretty much sums up a lot of things there. i’ve been working very non-linearly here and have a lot of the plot figured out as well as which beats to hit… now just the execution of said plan. Mostly the muse has been chewing on the penultimate chapter and final chapter a lot more than what is currently going on. I’ll make the muse behave eventually but it’s getting a break on this one since I updated just a little bit ago. (Don’t look at me like that Danno!)

A New Version of Foreplay, Chapter two/final chapter (911, Buddie) I really just have the smut to write and the muse hasn’t been playing ball here. It’ll happen eventually but just probably not this week. We know where we’re going here and all—Just need the Buck and Eddie part of my muse to cooperate.

Death Rebirth and the Jackal (Mass Effect Andromeda, The Mummy (1999 movie trilogy) with heavy influences from Moon Knight, American Gods and Egyptian history/mythology, MReyder). I’ve got this vaguely on the every month posting schedule rotation so expect a chapter a month—possibly more often depending on how much writing time I get (fall is getting overscheduled right into February so don’t hold your breath).

To Follow (Mass Effect all media types, MReyder, MShenko—sequel/alternative perspective of one-shot Seguir, Pre-Andromeda meeting/relationship). The muse has been chewing on the plot for this like a week old newspaper. The paper has gotten beyond soggy and I’m going to be cleaning up plot points for a bit but I’m starting to get a really clear picture of how to work things. Probably getting a new chapter in the next six weeks or so. Just need to get in the really angsty headspace first and have it not be stolen by Eddie Diaz.

Reinventing Scott (Mass Effect Andromeda, MReyder) ah my what-if-Cora-really-was-pissed-about-not-being-pathfinder fic and we took a left turn at Eos that ended up with Scott and Reyes running into each other much earlier. It was kinda on the back burner but i’ve been mulling over a few plot points the last two weeks so also prolly getting something in the next month or so but not on the official update rotation—yet.

Promise Me You Won’t Let Me (Wheel of Time, Cauthor). Is officially on the try-to-update monthly rotation. I want to finish this before the second season starts airing. If you’ve been reading and have watched the first season you know this is going to all end in tragedy and blow up in Rand’s and Mat’s face. Might possibly be the most painfully angst ridden thing I’ve written. I hope the show runners give me a reason to write a sequel of them pining angrily at each other from afar in the second season. Sorry Rand—there’s going to be a lot of whump in both Mat’s and your immediate future.

To Catch A Fallen Star (Teen Wolf and Stardust Mashup, Sterek and others) I seem to have caught a fusion/mashup vibe with Jackal and it continues here. Prologue is posted and I’m planning on monthly-ish updates. Have a pretty good roadmap worked out so it’s just a matter of having time and energy to stay on top of. I mean Stiles is Tristan and Derek’s Yvaine. What could go wrong? Oh yeah and Peter is totally Septimus while Scott is going to be Bernard.

Cousin Harvey (Moon Knight and Suits Crossover, Marvey, it’s complicated for Marc and Steven but it’s not sexual) Nothing yeeted yet as this is going to be a one-shot I s2g. I mean what are Marc and Steven doing in Nebraska? Harvey’s got the bail money. This is going to possibly be totally crack-y (What am I saying? It’s totally crack).

The Outlaw and the Cartel Boss (Mayans MC, Miguel/EZ, Angel/Adelita, Angel/Coco, Sentinel/Guide AU). I had this on the back burner because it’s long and when I do work on it it’s never usually on the NEXT chapter but on other things but my mood at work slid into Miguel’s headspace so now it’s gotten it’s running shoes back on. Roughly planning every-other-month to monthly updates until done as these chapters tend to be closer to FFO updates rather than 3-5k. I just can’t leave Sentinel/Guide AUs alone and Danny Pino and JD Pardo are just too damned pretty of men. Also KJ IS NOT DYING HERE! fwiw this is completely AU of the tv series (off the reservation so to speak) so if you want to read just pull up the wiki entries and you’ll be good to go. Don’t look so pleased with yourself Miguel *grumbles*

Firefighter Derek Series (linked one-shots, Teen Wolf, eventual Sterek). I’ve gotten a bit written on Papa Stillinski’s POV one shot so most likely will get this done sometime this fall. Also have a pretty clear view of Connie the Librarian’s one shot which will be on the shorter side. Expect these to randomly get yeeted if the muse gets in the mood. The Stiles and more of Derek’s POV ones the muse is doing a good impression of the witches from Macbeth with (double, double toill and trouble and all).

Pieces that are currently simmering on the back burner—meaning that I’m not considering them abandoned and do tweak/write a bit/plot about them. They’ll get done EVENTUALLY. I never put something out that I don’t plan on finishing even if it’s six or seven years later….again feed the muse people. A few of these got started for MReyder week and I hate to think that sort of deadline is what it might take to make me shove something out the door chapter-wise.

Mreyder medical AU for @radio-chatter you’ll get this eventually. I’ve got too many thoughts but they’re completely disorganized. Mostly Scott and Reyes need to sync their on call schedule so they can actually get some sleep.

What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? ah the holiday fic that I swear I’m going to finish every December and yet still haven’t quite finished it two years later. maybe this year is the year…..it’s… half-done?

Recurrence. Every time I re-read my favorite book of all time Dark Matter by Blake Crouch I work on this. Eventually will get done. I just can’t leave the idea to die. So it gets worked on once a year and gets about ten pages added which are never the actual NEXT chapter.

Mafia AU. I have this very clear picture of Scott sitting in a hospital waiting room, hasn’t slept in days, drinking terrible coffee at 3AM and trying not to notice how Reyes’ blood is still visible under his fingernails despite how much he’s scrubbed them. Reyes’ uncle shows up and it’s like being doused in an icy river how much he realizes he doesn’t know about Reyes’ life. Non-linear narrative. Scott is maybe a firefighter in this too or maybe he’s a cop—something public service. Reyes makes a decision to protect Scott which means he has to give up everything—but he’ll do it if it keeps Scott safe.

911 stuff

Buddie Rear Window—more idea than fully formed. Might be a spooky season fic might not. Depends on how hard this plot idea sticks around. Currently not actively being written. Buck is Jimmy Stewart. Eddie is Grace Kelly. Carla is totally Buck’s housekeeper. Athena is a very much not impressed Detective.

Sentinel Guide follow up one shots. Got ideas but not actively being worked on. May randomly get one shots yeeted out on this if the muse bites hard enough.

Might revisit the werewolf fic for a sequel for spooky season. Might just be more sexytimes one-shot.

SWAT

Deacon/Hondo side story/sequel to FFO. When this finally get’s written it’s going to be a tear jerker and deal with non-canon death of Deacon’s wife and the resulting fallout—grief, healing, love etc. This has been hanging around my brain for the better part of a year so it’ll eventually get written but not until FFO is done. Will be completely AU from the SWAT series at that point.

Edit: i totally forgot Bradley the Damned!!! Um yeah. It’s my Generation Kill Bradnate time bending immortal fic. Yeah. On the back burner because it tend to write it during spooky season. Prolly getting an update in the next two months?

i just have this image of daiyu mei seeking revenge for the death of her husband, the person we can very reasonably assume she cared about most in the world, and obviously doing some digging on steve to find out what would be the best way to gain leverage over him and coming to the conclusion that the only sensible option is to grab danny, the person steve cares about most in the world. an eye for an eye. a husband for an it’s-kinda-like-we’re-married-me-and-him.

(i also kind of think wo fat and daiyu mei can’t have been married in any way that would have been officially registered with any government, because then steve would have known of her existence and kept half an eye on her long before this whole thing happened, so i guess we just have daiyu mei doing the math (three men live in one house with two bedrooms; one of them is a lot younger and dating a woman while the other two have a long history of acting like they’re involved in an epic romance and keep saying i love you) and coming up with “yeah, so there’s no marriage certificate, but same diff”. daiyu mei kidnapped danny, but she said gay rights before she did it.)

I'm not strictly a Hawaii Five-O Blog, though I do love mcdanno! Last night's episode, 9. 14, was good, but it could have been great! I think cramming it all into one episode was putting too much into too short a space. They could have really leaned in to the fighting homophobia plot line, like what happened to the parents of the girl and how they were convinced to sign the papers. They did a really great job of leaning into the fighting racist overtures, but I feel like it could have been a really good two-parter. That's not to mention all of the great mcdanno stuff they could have had in there had Scott Caan been in the episode. Or even just having Steve be more than supportive, but I know they probably won't ever make him LGBTQ+, but if they were going to, this would have been the perfect episode for that! Still like the show though, great job!

Star-Gazing / McDanno One-Shot

Danny had plans for his Saturday afternoon since he read about the live broadcasting of the big event in the newspaper. In fact, the big happening was all over the news, and his team had a moment joking about it, making some cheesy remarks, and putting in their two cents. He played along, mumbling some incoherent words, not putting his cards on the table about how much he was looking forward to enjoying these moments on TV.

It was eleven o'clock Saturday morning at the headquarters. Danny wouldn't have needed to drop by at work. His desk was clear, and the mountain of files was down to three folders. He had time to finish them next week. It was quiet and peaceful in their office. Danny had no intention to strike a new path. Although he was off, he enjoyed the fulfillment of daily routine. He didn't need adventurous plans for his spare time. He and his team dealt daily with a load of fucked up moments in the line of duty where everything could change in mere seconds. Danny lived for days when everything was routine, almost boringly normal and uneventful, simply for the fact of being foreseeable, comforting, and cherished.

Danny got up early, completed all the chores at home, and on his way to shop groceries, he drove by the office just to check in and make sure Steve didn't need him. He wanted the confirmation that the afternoon was all his.

"Hey, babe. I'm heading out. You okay with that?" Danny leaned into Steve's office, holding the door open, not stepping in. He didn't want to get involved in any conversation, especially when they were the only two guys on the floor.

Buck was surprised to see the number calling him. It was Christopher’s school. Fumbling, he answered the call, juggling the team’s lunch order. “Hello?

“Is this Evan Buckley?”

“This is he—but I go by Buck.”

“Okay.. Buck. I’m Sophia Baxter the administrative assistant at Durrand. You’re listed as the second contact number for Christopher Diaz.”

Buck halted in the middle of the doorway where he could see the clock above the computer worktable—it was about a half hour after school dismissal for Christopher. “Is Christopher okay?”

“Christopher is fine. It’s just no one has come to pick him up today. He said it was supposed to be his father but I’ve been unable to get Eddie Diaz on the phone number we have on file.”

“He was off today,” Buck said absently, already running through his last conversation with Eddie yesterday about his plans for today and he should have been able to pick up Chris as it was Carla’s day off since Eddie was going into his weekend off. “I’m out of town but I will get a hold of someone to come pick him up. Can I call you back at this number?”

“Yes. I can stay but I’m concerned that no one called.”

“Yeah that’s weird for Eddie. I will be calling his family and I will call you back with a plan.” Buck’s thoughts took on more worry. It wasn’t like Eddie to not have Christopher’s schedule planned in detail.

Making the appropriate noises to end the call, he immediately called Eddie as soon as the secretary hung up. Eddie’s phone rang and rang but it went to voicemail. He dialed a second time—no answer. His worry mounting, Buck texted Eddie a terse, call me now which just showed as delivered.

Switching to the location app that showed where someone was if they had authorized you—which Eddie and Buck had mutually done long ago because of shared trips with Christopher and one too many times getting separated at the zoo his worry skyrocketed when it showed no current location for Eddie.

The only time it showed that was if you were out of cell phone range or if they turned off their phone.

Buck pulled up Pepa’s number and hit dial perhaps a bit harder than necessary. Pepa answered on the fourth ring. “Buck? Is something wrong? I’m at work.”

Buck skipped to the point. “Eddie hasn’t picked up Christopher and the school called me…. I guess I’m his second contact?”

“Yes he mentioned that,” Pepa hummed.

“What?”

“With the paperwork and all,” Pepa sounded distracted and there was background noise of her walking into a quieter area.

“What paperwork?”

“He didn’t tell you?

“Tell me what?” Buck’s anxiety was climbing. What paperwork? Where was Eddie?

Pepa huffed into the phone as she closed a door with a quiet click. “I’m sure he meant to tell you.”

“Tell me what Tia?” That came out a bit harsh and out of the corner of Buck’s eye he could see Danny and Steve coming out of their offices.

“It’s really something you need to discuss with Eddito,” Pepa hedged, “but he made sure Mama and myself knew about it.”

“Pepa,” Buck was begging for her to get to the point. “What paperwork?”

a meta-y ramble: some lengthy thoughts on mcdanno + girlfriends, and more specifically steve in the context of danny and their girlfriends, because to be honest, i think some interesting things could be said there, because... steve consistently seems to take greater liberties in getting close/flirty with danny if they have girlfriends around (or at least the vague concept of them because they’ve just been mentioned) to cover for both their heterosexuality. a list of examples:

3.05: steve puts his arm around danny and they cuddle on the couch while they watch the notebook. catherine is also on the couch (steve’s straight girlfriend), and so is grace (danny’s kid, which is a less obvious but still generally accepted indicator of straightness).

4.04: steve and danny take their girlfriends to the movies. they sit next to each other and talk to each other the entire time, ignoring and embarrassing their girlfriends who keep shushing them, but it’s not like they’re on a date with each other because clearly they have their straight girlfriends of straightness right there!

4.19: steve tells danny he loves him right after a lot of talk in which he repeatedly encourages danny to get closer to his girlfriend, who danny just slept with for the first time (VERY GOOD straight cover! that’s enough to allow for something as daring as an admission of love between two men who are unusually close). later, steve and danny say mutual i love yous, right after we’ve seen them reunite with their respective girlfriends (and grace) who were waiting for them.

4.20: steve and danny say i love you to each other after a very short conversation in which they manage to mention both their girlfriends, who are not in this episode, but amber is waiting for danny in the car and steve totally knows where catherine currently is! thank god. we almost could’ve been fooled into thinking there might be something not straight about this.

6.01: at kono’s wedding, steve is dancing with catherine when he sees danny. he dances over to danny. it’s okay; he brought catherine as his date to the wedding and literally just dipped and kissed her in front of everyone present, so he’s obviously very straight. (after this in the same episode, he tells danny he’s going to propose marriage to catherine, which i personally think has more to do with steve’s abandonment issues and the fact that he genuinely does like catherine than anything else, but you could relate it to this if you want.)

6.14: steve gets very interested in danny’s interest in lingerie. that’s okay though, because danny is talking about liking lingerie on his very straight girlfriend, and steve is a straight man who is straightly fascinated by that, and there are a lot of bras and pink around when they walk into victoria’s secret together. also, steve carries a literal visual reminder of his straightness around in the form of a black eye that he got while on a date with his really hot straight girlfriend and everyone keeps asking him about it.

7.16: many things happen here, but most notable is the end scene, where steve and danny are at one end of the table and steve throws his arm around danny and watches his face from up close and his eyes briefly stray to danny’s lips at one point and he flicks danny’s ear, all while their wonderfully straight girlfriends are across the table from them, being straight.

now, the behind the scenes reason for all of this is probably very simple: this show is aimed at a somewhat conservative straight audience, so to let viewers enjoy steve and danny’s bromance without having to worry that they might be watching something Gay™, the showrunners make sure to mention and/or show girlfriends. it’s fairly straightforward (pun totally intended).

however, this heteronormativity in the writing of canon does kind of leave us with an obvious pattern in canon, and if we look at this from a watsonian perspective (i.e. we basically ignore that this is fiction that human beings are responsible for and we try to make the world of the story make sense in-universe without falling back on “that’s what the writers did because x”), then we still need a way to explain that pattern. and, i mean, if you really wanted you could throw it all on coincidence. you could also say steve is straight, and while not homophobic (9.14 rules that out beautifully) perhaps he’s still a little uncomfortable with his straightness being called into question, so he feels more secure about showing affection for male friends in a context where his heterosexuality has been established. or! it’s less sinister than that and the presence of girlfriends/women is just something that puts steve at ease and takes away some of the need to be macho. for me, none of this would fully explain all of it like the lingerie kink, what’s up with that, but it’s not like my interpretation is the only one possible; you could probably make this work.

but honestly, what seems to make most sense to me is steve mcgarrett, a man who dedicated his life to a job that comes with a very aggressively straight, homophobic environment, and he’s been pining for his best friend for going on a decade, but he doesn’t want that/thinks it’s hopeless/can’t admit to it/genuinely doesn’t even realize it’s happening even though his actions are still led by it, so the only times he feels safe enough to almost make a move and cross some boundaries are when his straightness (and usually danny’s, too) has been established and is unquestionable because he has receipts, basically. (once in a while he maybe does it the other way around, first getting close to danny and then panicking and overcompensating in straightness. it can work both ways.)

(by the way, while this argument could possibly be made for danny too, i don’t think it works as well. at least in the episodes listed above it’s steve bridging the distance almost every single time; even in 4.20, where they both mention girlfriends and both say i love you, it’s steve who says it first. danny is generally presented and perceived as the one who shows affection more easily though i’m not always sure that’s true, but that’s a whole different conversation, so to have steve initiate all these things is an interesting contrast and maybe a question in itself. (ALSO. danny is far more agressively straight most of the time, as in, drools over women more obviously. does that mean steve is less interested? is he just more of a gentleman? more secure in his own attractiveness, so he doesn’t have to chase women? is danny compensating for something too, but in his own way?))
