Jackson Hole: Fed policy collides with reality in the most unequal county in America (CNN) Central bank officials from across the world have descended upon Jackson Hole, Wyoming this week to discuss policy decisions that will shape the economy for years to come. But as they talk about inflation and the economy in the abstract, residents of the popular vacation destination are very much feeling the realities of their policies. That’s because Jackson Hole is the most economically unequal place in the United States, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The snow kissed peaks and verdant valleys of Jackson Hole aren’t just awe-inspiring. They’re also symbolic. Among the top 1% in Teton County (where Jackson Hole is located), the average annual income is a jaw-dropping $22.5 million. The median household income in Teton County in 2021, meanwhile, was about $94,000, according to the US Census Bureau. The annual August symposium of global financial leaders and economic elites wouldn’t happen without the servers, cooks, drivers and hotel and event staff who make it function—the same people feeling the hard impact of elevated inflation, high interest rates and a softening economy the most. “If you look at income, Jackson Hole is really a microcosm of the nation’s wealth inequalities laid out across these dramatic landscapes of the Mountain West,” said Kenan Fikri, director of research at The Economic Innovation Group, a bipartisan policy organization. “It’s a ground zero for understanding how inflation affects the budgets of lower-earning households when they’re already financially stressed.”

Ecuador election: As run-off looms, voters crave genuine change (Al Jazeera) From her small convenience store in northern Quito, Tanya Vazquez is consumed by fear. Her modest shop has been robbed three times in the last few years, she said; in one case, the perpetrator fired a gun towards her husband, although the bullet missed. A miracle:’ Virginia man meets Chilean family 42 years after he was stolen as newborn (USA Today) It has been 42 years since María Angélica González saw her son. He was a newborn. A nurse told González he needed to be put in an incubator because he was premature. Not long after, she returned with devastating news: The baby was dead. For 42 years, that’s what González believed. For 42 years, it has been a lie. Gonzalez’s son, Jimmy Lippert Thyden, was stolen from González, adopted out to unwitting parents in the United States and raised in Arlington, Virginia. For 42 years, Thyden believed he had no living relatives in Chile, where he was born. Then one day in April, Thyden read a USA TODAY story about a California man who had learned he was stolen from his mother in Chile and illegally adopted out to an American couple. It got Thyden thinking: Could the same thing have happened to him? Within weeks, Thyden learned the truth. And last week, González finally got to hug her son. “It’s a miracle from God,” González, 69, told USA TODAY during a video chat in Spanish as she sat with Thyden on Saturday. “When I learned that he was alive, I couldn’t believe it.”

Legal Troubles for Sarkozy (Foreign Policy) It’s been an eventful week for former world leaders facing legal problems. On Friday, magistrates in Paris ordered former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial on charges that his 2007 election campaign received a $54 million illegal contribution from former Libyan dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi’s government. The one-term president has denied wrongdoing alongside 12 other co-defendants, including three of his former cabinet ministers. He will be tried in 2025. This is far from Sarkozy’s first indictment rodeo. The 68-year-old leader has been convicted twice for corruption and influence-peddling. In May, he lost his first appeal for a 2021 accusation alleging he tried to bribe a judge. His three-year prison term was brought down to just one trip around the sun, which Sarkozy can fulfill under house arrest. He still faces a second probe into allegations that he received a payment of $3.2 million by Russian insurance firm Reso-Garantia in 2019 while he was working as a consultant.

UNICEF says a year on from Pakistan’s catastrophic floods, millions of children still need support (AP) The United Nations children’s agency on Friday warned that a year on from Pakistan’s devastating floods, an estimated 4 million children continue to need humanitarian assistance and access to essential services as a shortage of funds remains a hurdle in recovery. The warning from UNICEF comes as authorities in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province are racing against time to evacuate people from areas affected by the overflowing River Sutlej. Since Aug. 1, rescuers have evacuated over 100,000 people from marooned areas in the districts of Kasur and Bahawalpur. More than six months ago, dozens of countries and international institutions at a U.N.-backed conference in Geneva pledged more than $9 billion to help Pakistan recover and rebuild from last summer’s floods. But most of the pledges were in the form of loans for projects, which are still in the planning stages.

A Crisis of Confidence Is Gripping China’s Economy (NYT) Earlier this year, David Yang was brimming with confidence about the prospects for his perfume factory in eastern China. After nearly three years of paralyzing Covid lockdowns, China had lifted its restrictions in late 2022. The economy seemed destined to roar back to life. Mr. Yang and his two business partners invested more than $60,000 in March to expand production capacity at the factory, expecting a wave of growth. But the new business never materialized. Power returns to most of Kenya after a 14-hour outage (AP) Electricity was being restored in most parts of Kenya on Saturday, 14 hours after the longest outage in recent memory, the majority government-owned power distributor said. There was still no clear explanation for the outage that hit on Friday night, shutting down the country’s main international airport, affecting major hospitals and even the president’s office compound. The outage came just weeks before Kenya’s government hosts the first Africa Climate Summit, where energy will be key on the agenda. Kenya gets almost all its energy from renewable sources, but infrastructure and alleged mismanagement remain an issue in the country of more than 50 million people.

The author of The First Viral Images: Maerten de Vos, Antwerp Print, and the Early Modern Globe discusses St. Michael the Archangel and how the internet and art from 1600 aren't so different.

Why use the internet to explain artworks made around 1600?

The whole idea for the book started with an offhand comment made at a conference–the idea of a meme going viral was at first a kind of off-the-cuff analogy to this print (St. Michael the Archangel, the book's central case study) that seemed to be copied just about everywhere around 1600. For those of us who spend too much time on the internet, it made sense: a meme gets copied, adapted, reshared, and circulated, creating new variations, combining with other memes, and becoming divorced from its original context. But when I started to think about it, this flippant remark hit on a few things I was particularly interested in–namely, how do new image technologies (in this case, print, or today’s memes) adapt and change as they move between communities of viewers? Reading media studies scholars’ work on internet culture gave me a vocabulary and a framework to analyze the movement of early modern prints–it made me think about gatekeepers and infrastructures of print media and made me question art-historical notions of artistic agency. Now of course, there are lots of ways the sharing of memes on the internet differs from the sixteenth-century circulation of printed images–things happen so quickly now, there is a dematerialization of artistic labor, and the infrastructure of the web is complex in ways that differ from the transoceanic trade of the early modern period. But this analogy helped me see this vast, in some ways undocumented process–the concerted export of printed imagery across the globe by colonial, missionary, and commercial agents, prints that were then copied and recirculated by a whole range of local actors–in a new and hopefully productive way.

Why did you choose these case studies?

My central case study, St. Michael the Archangel, is just a straight-up weird image. This archangel almost always has a sword, but here he doesn’t; he carries a martyr’s palm and has this strange, open, upraised hand. Frankly, this made variants of this image easy to spot. The 1581 painting hangs only a few miles from where one of the later Filipino ivory variants is now held, in Central Mexico, and I think that juxtaposition really compelled me. I started collecting them; for a while, every time I gave a paper it felt like someone in the audience knew another version (in Quito, in Cusco, in Valencia). So I started with that one iconographic image and within a year or two had a sizeable corpus. I am sure there are more out there–in fact, while the book was in press I was able to finally get to Portugal and see a couple more!

So I had this one iconographic image, but I wanted it to speak to a wider phenomenon. So I decided to also include the Evangelicae historiae imagines because it is the most copied thing in the early modern world, and, it turns out, many of the same folks were involved in both projects. Many talented and diligent scholars have done the work of locating and describing a lot of the Imagines copies, so I was able to focus on how the St. Michael images anticipated this kind of movement, arguing that the Jesuits knew and exploited the viral potential of print.

How did this print (the St. Michael, published in Antwerp) end up in Manila?

Well, the print had to be smuggled out of Antwerp first, probably overland with a Flemish book publisher who had ties in Spain. Then it was likely sold in Seville before being taken by missionaries or merchants to New Spain. Once landing in Veracruz, the print would have been taken overland, via Mexico City, to Acapulco before making the 100-day sea voyage to Manila in the cargo of a priest or trader. There are a lot of unknowns in this itinerary, but we do have letters from Jesuit priests thanking their brethren in Seville for sending prints to them. But the better answer is to read my book (particularly the chapter on Manila)!

05 de julio de 2022 (Ya comienzo a salir de acá)

Extrañamente hoy me desperté sin llorar y puse un tweet que decía que soñé en que adoptaba un bebé de mi expareja fruto de un experimento en el cual yo también fui donador de esperma, en el sueño lo veía como un salto absoluto de fe, porque yo aún la amo y así me tocase hacer eso, estaría totalmente dispuesto; cuando desperté, me sentí extraño, pero sonreí por lo bizarro del sueño.

Como es costumbre ya hace varios meses, me levanto a beber una taza de tinto y unos 5 cigarros mientras veo tiktok, memes en Facebook, respondo uno que otro mensaje del trabajo o sencillamente miro por el balcón esperando que algo extraordinario suceda y aunque estaba al borde del precipicio, no llore, estuve apunto pero sentía que no era necesario derramar lagrimas esta mañana.

Avanzo el día, desayune por gusto y no por obligación, tiempo después prepare almuerzo y con mucho gusto lo devore sin titubear, después de eso me dispuse a realizar el informe de pago, pero en mi cabeza comenzaron a rondar varias cuestiones que se sintetizan en dos frases de dos canciones que regularmente escucho, la primera es una se Sebastián Yatra, que cuando estaba en mi peor momento, fue revelada por mi primo y me sumió en un espiral de tristeza del cual fue muy difícil salir, pero que hoy me imprime, no se, mil veces la fuerza que perdí ese día cuando la escuche en bucle por más de 6 horas, el caso, la canción se llama Melancólicos anónimos, exactamente en el minuto 02:16 en donde dice "Ayer salí de fiesta y conocí una nena, que con un solo beso me quito la pena"

y la siguiente canción es una canción de Morat, banda que también fue compartida por mi primo, que por cierto odie hasta marzo de este año y sin sus liricas repetitivas, estribillos básicos y letras bastante melancólicas, pude seguir adelante en esta mierda de situación, el caso, la canción se llama "Otras se pierden" la cual narra el proceso de ruptura de una relación y el sufrimiento que demarca un rompimiento, pero al igual que la canción anterior, paulatinamente, el personaje encarnado en tercera persona a lo largo de la canción va mejorando y va siendo consiente de que todo es un proceso, el caso, en el minuto 3:40 se indica que "Y aunque su amor dejo una llama prendida, estas a un beso de poderla apagar"

en este momento el lector dirá ¿Qué tiene que ver esto? es sencillo en varios niveles, los cuales voy a desagregar según los recuerde:

Es complejo pensar en ello, porque más que idealizar a mi pareja, estaba idealizando irracionalmente la idea de la familia que había conformado con ella, el hecho de vivir bajo el mismo techo, aunque estuviese el 50% del tiempo ausente, se tener dos gatos adaptados y de comprar cosas para sentirnos más cómodos, me hacia sentir tan a gusto y en una especie de felicidad que fue eclipsada 3 veces, pero que retomare más adelante.

Comprendo la idea de progresar y avanzar en el proceso de superar un duelo amoroso, las típicas frases clichés de "uno no es capas de creer que puede volverse a enamorar, hasta que lo hace" pero es esta misma idea la que duele, que se que me voy a enamorar y mi relación anterior de 7 años va a pasar a segundo plano, la persona a quien le pedí matrimonio va a ser alguien que si bien no va a ser "cualquier persona" no va a ser el motor e inspiración de mis días, como lo solía ser.

Otra derivación de este punto es el valor del "te amo" el cual es tan efímero, tan corto y más irracional del que pensé, porque cuando le dije la primera vez que la amaba, yo proyecte mi voz a mi vida entera, cuando le pedí matrimonio, proyecte mis expectativas a toda nuestra historia y cuando nos mudamos para vivir juntos, proyecte mi vida a que fuese nuestra vida, pero no, el "te amo" fue valido durante 7.5 años más o menos, antes de ello no nos conocíamos y ahora, nos desconocemos.

Como lo decía con antelación, se que voy a conocer a otra persona que me haga encacorrar, y va a ser especial y con las lecciones aprendidas, pero el amor que aún hoy emana de mi para ella es casi infinito, pero es un infinito más pequeño que ayer y así al punto de que se pueda contabilizar, el caso es que tengo un poco de melancolía por que esa realidad cada vez más rápido repta a mi realidad y añuque hoy la repudie y no este en posición par aceptarla, el tiempo hace lo suyo y ya sea en 1 día, 1 mes, 1 año o más será una realidad.

Es bastante triste reconocer que existen te amo más pequeños, más grandes, pero indirectamente están destinados a desaparecer y a reaparecer, a veces con otras sonrisas y muy pocas otras con las mismas.

Aunque he escrito mucho sobre esta situación, siento que estoy cada día mejor que el anterior, pero con un poco más de nostalgia que el ayer, por ultimo, quería mencionar que después de 9 años invite a una chica que no fuese mi novia al cine y es extraño pensar este escenario, porque las películas de Marvel eran un ritual con mi expareja, mañana voy a desmitificar este espacio, esta conducta y paso a paso trato de hacer estas cosas, aunque no he sido capas de volver a comer ramen, no se cuando tenga la fuerza de hacerlo, porque no es solo ramen, a eso sabia y olía mi hogar, unas veces con costilla de res, otra vez con costilla de cerdo, pero desde mi perspectiva, siempre con muchísimo amor.

Mientras escribió esto Alaska, que también esta pasando por una situación similar a la mía me escribió:

y me hizo pensar demasiado, por que ¿Qué cosas hice por amor en 7 años? muchísimas, pero, ¿Qué hice en 4 meses por desamor por y para mi? duele reconocer esta situación, pero aunque las cosas están más grises que las anteriores entradas, hoy veo algo de luz al final del túnel, aún es muy pequeña, pero creo que ya existe.

Espero que cuando vuelva a leer esta entrada en un tiempo, las cosas hayan mejorado notablemente.
