Yes! Okay, requisite this is Not Authoritative Or Comprehensive claim, I'm a dork with a Russian degree, but here we go:

(I tried to organize this chronologically because if I did it thematically we would be here all day. Also, I still have more books, but they get increasingly niche. This is a Greatest Hits playlist, and if you look these people up, you will find their contemporaries)

Jules Verne — 80,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth. Excellent continuations of that exploration/'ostracized' genius figure, so popular in the previous century. French, so English translations. Kinda marks the transition point between 19th c. pure spec exploration and what we would call sci-fi. BUT BEFORE HIM...

Mary Shelley — Frankenstein is probably the first sci-fi novel as we know it. BUT BEFORE HER...

Margaret Cavendish — Okay, the 'first sci-fi novel' is hard to define for obvious reasons, but The Blazing World has as good a claim as any. Published in the 17th c., so it really traverses the genres, but includes a utopian kingdom accessible via the North Pole. Her husband was so impressed that he composed a sonnet for her, which serves as the epigraph for the novel; it's a wild read in the same way Robinson Crusoe and other early novels are, and I'm mostly including it here because it's so, so wild to read in 2023.

John W. Campbell — That dude. The hero's journey guy. His short story Who Goes There? Has been adapted a million times into a little movie called The Thing. Unfortunately got really into race science, so Isaac Asimov told him to fuck off. Edited the magazine Astounding Science Fiction, which in 1939 published Black Destroyer by Alfred Van Vogt, usually cited as the beginning of Golden Age sci-fi.

H. G. Wells — Big critic of class divisions in Victorian English society, coined the term 'time machine' as we think of it in his novel...The Time Machine. A lot of what we consider 'classic' time travel tropes were, if not invented here, had their seeds planted here. Also famous for War of the Worlds, leading to a MINOR disturbance when Orson Welles did a dramatic radio reading.

Edgar Rice Burroughs — the man, the myth, the legend. If I could persuade you to read one white English sci-fi author with rather dubious politics, it would be him, if only because of how influential he was. Mostly famous for Tarzan, but he also wrote a whole series about Hollow Earth that crosses over with Tarzan at some point (Pellucidar), as well as the series Barsoom (A Princess of Mars and its sequels), and Amtor (Guy named Carson Napier gets transported to Venus, which was a watery hellscape, as was popularly theorized for a while).

They're basically pulp comics before pulp comics, published in magazines, extremely lurid and dramatic, and he did write his own crossovers. These were what the first modern superhero comics writers often grew up reading and what inspired them—John Carter's cultural cachet was borrowed by Superman until it became his cultural cachet.

They're very fun, but also supremely products of their time, and extremely fond of the British Empire.

Judith Merrill — prolific writer and editor, who also wrote one of my personal favorite reactions to the atomic bomb in Shadow on the Hearth.

Gabriel García Márquez — we're gonna take half a sidestep into magical realism here (which is, to define quickly, a genre incorporating the fantastic into otherwise realistic narratives, often formed and associated with decolonial and post colonial Latin American fiction, but not always. It's a fuzzy genre). He wrote in Spanish, but I read him in English. One Hundred Years of Solitude is probably one of the great novels ever written. My mother is also telling me to rec Love in the Time of Cholera and she wrote about the man, so listen to her.

Jorge Amado — the sixties were the big magical realism heyday. Amado was Brazilian and his Dona Flor and her Two Husbands is a book my Spanish high school teacher made me swear to read some day.

Andre Alice Norton — Deserves a spot for being one of the most prolific sci-fi authors of all time during a time when sci-fi was INCREDIBLY inhospitable to women. Over 300 books!

Robert Heinlein — This man is the poster child for "male author who writes groundbreaking sci-fi novels but cannot be normal about women with a gun to his head". The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is excellent and incredibly important for how comprehensive the creation of Luna and its workers was, even if it is very sixties free love. Also wrote Starship Troopers, the novel.

Edward Smith — you haven't seen drama until you read what they said when Lensman (first book is Triplanetary) lost to Foundation for the Hugo in the sixties.

Larry Niven — Fleet of Worlds! Ringworld won a whole host of awards and deservedly so in 1970. Fair warning, his stuff decidedly falls under "hard" sci-fi (lots and lots of discussion for plausible alien artifacts), though it is awesome just in terms of how he can communicate scale. If you see a big ring-like structure in space, you can thank this guy, basically (the term ringworld comes from here). Also did a bunch of co-writing. I haven't read his other stuff, but CoDominium is on my list (he co-wrote it. First book is The Mote in God's Eye). If you liked the TV show The Expanse when it did the alien stuff and the later books it never got to adapt, you'll love this guy.

Samuel R. Delaney — Dhalgren is a book I am forbidding you to research before reading. Go in prepared. You have been warned. You will either love this book or set it on fire.

Stanislaw Lem — Solaris. I started this novel last week after watching the Tarkovsky film and. It's doing something to my brain, that's for sure. It's a book where I have to read every sentence twice. If you read it, find a good translation if you don't speak Polish. The author famously is very mad at critics who use Freudian analysis for it, so tread carefully (it's about the limits of rationality and our ability to understand, so. Fair).

Joanna Russ — The Female Man is a seminal work of feminist sci-fi. It's—fascinating, to be honest. Discusses socially enforced dependence of women on men and the creation of a different gender, a "female man", when the protagonist chooses to reject it and thus her socially enforced gender. I wouldn't call it a transgender manifesto (written in 1975, features insufficiently masculine men undergoing sex change surgery, so...yeah) but it definitely awoke something in my brain when I was 16 lol. I would LOVE to see it revisited in literary criticism from a modern perspective, especially from trans people.

C.J. Cherryh — If we talked about female sci-fi authors from the 1950s-70s writing under gender ambiguous aliases, we would be here all day, so I'm picking the one whose books I got for cheap at a book sale. Her Foreigner series has such a good premise with descendants of a lost Earth ship and interstellar court drama, and it's SO fun.

Poul Anderson — the name is not a typo, do not look up Paul Anderson, you will never find him. I actually have a copy of Three Swords and Three Lions currently collecting dust on my shelf and judging me right now as I wait to read it. Tau Zero is one of the greatest things I've ever read. The time dilation stuff gets kinda dense at times, but he incorporates some interest in his Swedish history and folk tales into it, and his explanation of travel at the speed of light and incorporating that into his discussion of nationalism is incredible. The ending where they survived [REDACTED] and landed on what may have been [REDACTED] has been bouncing around my brain for a bit now.

Laura Esquivel — Like Water for Chocolate is from the magical realism reading list.

Salman Rushdie — Midnight's Children is one of those bucket list books, for better or worse. Recontextualized Indian independence from the British and the Partition through framing of a husband telling the story to his wife, as he actively tells the story to her. Really uses the fantastical versus the real w/history versus truth so well.

Nancy Farmer — The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, for the kids lying about their age on Tumblr dot hell. Three kids try to escape a kidnapping after sneaking out—in 23rd century Zimbabwe. With the help of three mutant detectives. It rules.

Ben Okri — Okay, I have not read his stuff yet, but it is on my list. Other people here have discussed his influence on them in post colonial sci-fi. His big one is The Famished Road, first in a trilogy, and renowned for its discussion of the spiritual and realist world coexisting in African animist spiritual life.

Nnedi Okorafor — I have read one of her short stories, Remote Control, and currently have an book list with her other stuff on it. Other people I know vouched for her work. She specifically writes Africanfuturism and Africanjujuism centered around her Nigerian background, and follows on from the likes of Okri and Octavia Butler. I'd also add if you're a Stephen King fan when he's in Dark Tower mode, she's probably gonna have things that appeal to you.

Town hall was a mess - physically and socially speaking. Cedar Hills may have had a population of 48 on paper, but that was last updated almost a decade ago, so the current population of 36 was gathered in the musty basement carved below the post office.

Dan wasn’t exactly in any shape to take the stairs, even after an emergency transfusion and Merrill carefully packing his wounded leg, so he stayed in the post office with Wolf, who decidedly would do badly in a crowded underground space with lots of confused and upset people.

Not that Harrison was doing much better.

All eyes were on him in an instant as he emerged from the staircase behind Thomas. A stranger. An interloper. A fly in a glass of milk.

“What the hell is going on Toms? You said - ”

“Who the hell is that? That the stranger who’s to blame for all this commotion - ”

“Steph, babygirl what’s wrong - dear, get some tissues for the poor thing - ”

“Alright.” Thomas’ voice echoed over the room, far more commanding and confident than the words that followed. “We need to make a choice. Here and now.”

A voice piped up from the crowd.

“Who’s the stranger?”

Harrison sighed stepping next to Thomas - fuck, the kid was rattled and looked so damn relieved to not be the center of attention. Harrison didn’t blame him. Dan’s blood was still drying on his shoes.

“I’m Sargent Harrison Gomez. Translator and technician for TF-42, a taskforce organized from Firebase Charlie a few clicks south of here.” He tried to imagine he was addressing a bunch of skittish recruits. But at least recruits had respect for his rank.

“And what the hell are you doin’ here? We don’t like the government gettin’ up in our business young man.”

“The government has blockaded the interstate and cut the phone lines to this town.” There was a rumbled in the room, concerned whispered muffled in such a small space. “And there’s a damn good chance they’ll be sending soldiers into this town to - ”

“Where’s Sheriff Clifford?”

“Yeah, he’d know what to do - ”

“Sheriff Clifford is dead.” Tommy’s voice wavered, but he gave Harrison a grim nod. “He shot Dan in the leg and threatened to hurt Steph if we didn’t give the government what they wanted. I…I did what I needed to do.”

Harrison frowned, shooting the Deputy a glance. He still wasn’t a good liar, ears burning pink with a flush of shame, but it seemed to convince the townsfolk. They trusted his story implicitly. His judgement, on the other hand…

“What the hell you’d do that for, son? Why - what could’a gotten the Sheriff so - ”

“Steph, is that true - ?”

“Let her be Brian, Christ the poor kid’s been through enough - ”

“Everyone.” Thomas had swallowed back his white lie and regained his composure. “We need to make a choice. Sheriff only got that violent because - apparently because the government is more than willing to wipe us off the map to cover their tracks. Like Harrison said, the road’s blocked and communications are cut.” Thomas took a shuddering breath. “Do we stand our ground or do we evacuate?”

“What do you people want? What could be worth all this?” Harrison flinched as one of the men rounded on him, an accusatory finger jabbed in his direction. He opened his mouth to reply, but was cut off.

“Harrison isn’t here on behalf of the government.” Thomas snapped his mouth shut after he spoke, apologetic eyes shooting to Harrison. He shook his head and sighed. No use lying to these people anymore than they already had.

“The government wants us. Me and a - a friend who got out of one of their installations down south. We took some files - ”

“A deserter?”

“Traitor - sounds like treason to me.”

“What files?”

“Oh Christ, are we being held hostage by terrorists? Tommy why - ”

“Harrison isn’t a traitor.” The Deputy’s snarl was loud enough to force a hush over the crowd. “Harrison and Wolf are good men. They - they saved Steph’s life. And they deserve to get out of this alive as much as any of us do.”

“But - the files - what if they’re working with a - a terrorist?”

“You’re right.” Harrison’s voice started quiet, almost so soft he didn’t hear it. Not even Tommy understood the mumbled words, but he definitely understood the way Harrison’s shoulders rolled back, head held high.

“Harrison…” Tommy hissed, “…don’t - ”

“I swore to serve this country. And I have. No matter how many times it turned its back on me, I laced up my boots and went to work. Because it was right - I was told it was right. I’ve killed for that flag.” He jerked a thumb at the flag propped in the back corner of the room. “I’ve done what the soldiers at the edge of town are doing right now - looking at aerial maps. Figuring out the likelihood of capturing a target alive. Determining the acceptable civilian casualties. Same strategies in a different desert.

“And I was a good little soldier boy. Did all I was told to do without question, because why the hell would a country as great as this one be anything other than a beacon of justice, however bloody and unsavory it could be? I loved this country because my dad loved it, and I thought if I loved it enough, it would love me back. But it didn’t - it never will. The same way it doesn’t care if any of us live or die today.

“I don’t know if the files I have are worth this. But I have to believe this - getting out of here alive - is worth it. Two half dead men and a few papers are enough to scare half the military in this state into wiping out a whole town. They’re scared of being exposed for the blood oiled war machine that they are.

“But I also can’t stomach the thought of anyone else dying just for a chance to bring to light some of this country’s sins. I never wanted to put anyone in danger; I only stopped here because - because my friend would have bled out before we could find help anywhere else. So please,” Harrison took a shaky breath, “run while you still have time.”

And for Aisling... The concept of "home" is the core of her character so I'm sorry it'll be longer than necessary, oops! xD

Alyra:

💐 How does your OC handle being unwell or forced to rest in bed? Who cares for them and in what ways? Does your OC enjoy being doted on or are they a terrible patient? Reversed: is your OC good at taking care of others who are ill or in need?

Alyra takes it rationally. She's the perfect patient until she recognises she is sick or wounded. No point in dragging yourself up and about if your brain can't think straight from a fever and you're just there shivering, just to hinder the others. She stay put and rest until she's better and functional again. She won't be happy about it and will act grumpily for the inconvenience and the loss of time being sick nonetheless. Back in the clan it was Merrill keeping her company and chatting away not to make her feel alone. During the Blight it's Morrigan. She has... A rocky relationship with Wynne, will trust her greatly as a healer and her help is welcomed. But at the first note of a big speech over morality or what she should do, she will groan and fake to be very tired and wanting to sleep just to avoid it. Morrigan has her hedge ways to heal and is nice company to have around if you're grumpy.

Raina:

🌻 What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?

In people what she notices and likes most is personal coherence and how one stands up for what they believe in. She fell head over heels for Merril in Sundermount, when she confronted the Keeper and stood her ground even if it meant losing her family (which is something that would destroy Raina). Even in the little things: if you go around saying that you believe in kindness, she will notice and appreciate you stopping to pet a stray dog or give him a treat. As for things... She likes flowers growing in the most unlikely places. Dandelions sprouting from a crevice in a wall in Lowtown, she will always, always stop to blow the white puffy ones away. Pots with flowers in Darktown that are just there, apparently abandoned. Weeds creeping in in an unkept garden, or holly growing over an old oak. She's butch and will act thought and uncaring, she's the hugest softie inside.

Dear Kitten,

I’m leaving this here because I know you would need it.

I know you’re both safe in the Alienage, that no one would look for you there. Varric has thankfully kept you out of his books, and for once I’m happy he only included me as the love interest. I can’t but worry about the both of you, tho.

I’m not off yet, and I’m writing these words as the last things, as the crew sets up the ship and finish storing the larder, in the dull moments. They are so much duller without the both of you around, I really wished the next time I would have sailed off I would have you both at my side.

Such are the things of life, I know why you are deciding to stay, and I know why R. did. It is not a farewell but a goodbye, forgive me for being clingy when I didn’t think I could be.

Take care of each other when I won’t be around, please. I know that from the exterior it would look like the one that will need help the most is R. -as much as she tries to shrug everything off and act like she glides through life easily, with a joke and a smile, like nothing really matters, we both know better. And she will need help, by all means. Particularly now that G. is with me. I saw that look in her eyes and I know that she was affected by what happened and what she did, and will surely take the blame of everything. She’s caring that way.

Please, keep an eye on her and hold her for my sake.

And since you’re there, take good care of yourself as well, always for me. I know R. will do it (and yes I am writing to her as well, I’m sure you will read that letter too anyway, there’s no privacy with you both around and seriously you should not allow R. to borrow your toothbrush I see my fair share of scurvy and teeth ailments and you don’t want them). But anyway, I already miss you and I digress.

Take care of yourself as well for me, will you? Take care of you both. I’m leaving you with both halves of my heart and I expect the two of you to treat them exceedingly well.

🌹 Where in the world does your OC feel most at home? Is there any reason why? If it’s not the place they were born, where were they born? Is there a certain somebody that makes them feel at home where ever they may be? What does home mean to them?

"Home" to her means not a place but a feeling. That feeling you have when you know you can be your weirdest, silliest self and not be mocked for it, when you can talk and you will be listened, when you can freely be sad or angry or happy and it's ok. Home is people. Home was Keeper Deshanna and Pavyn and Radha, home had been Ydun. Home is the nook in the library with Dorian, both sitting on the ground with books and papers scattered around and Aisling crawling in to hug him just because he's owed many, many hugs, and him letting her do it. Home is slipping in Cullen's office when she's the one that really needs a hug, or waiting to be the last ones in the War Room just to steal a couple of minutes with him and feel loved. Home is Skyhold because there are many people she loves, there, and the fortress likes her. Home will be the farm after Trespasser, because she and Cullen renewed it with love and put hopes and emotion into it. And they could do it again if the building burned down, because Home is what they make, not anything material. Home has been animals, and spending time with them. There's something extremely soothing, to her, about gaining an animal's trust, that always makes you feel at home. Sure, you can approach domestic animals by offering them food and pet an halla if you bring them an apple! But there's a big difference between an animal approaching you for a treat and one that gives you their friendship and trust. That trust is home, what never fails to bring her joy in a rainy day and make her feel at peace with the world. An animal who trusts you doesn't have any second meanings, they just learnt to take joy in your company... and you can't be that bad of a person if a skittish horse allows you to curl up against his side and take a nap without kicking you in your head, right?

Review: This is a book that is great in some places, less so in others. I was actually tempted to stop reading it part way through because of how the story ends, and there will be spoilers in this review.

This book is a lot about failure, and overcoming failure, and then more and more failure. So much failure. This is a dude who... fails. He also succeeds but where the heart of the story is, well it's in his failures. He manages to end up in the famed Green Berets as a medic and assigned to Project Delta/B-52 but is basically kicked out for being a liability. He ends up in the 101st with their brigade LRRP team where he finds his first home. For those of you who read a lot about the VN war, you'll recognize a lot of the cast of characters in this section, with a majority of the focus being on his relationship with Rey Martinez. He then bounces around a bit, a little time in Germany, some time training medical stuff at replacement centers, and eventually as an Advisor in a few different areas. Throughout all of this he falls in love, fucks up the relationships, gets into a fucked up relationship, does a lot of drugs, gets drunk a lot, gets in trouble a lot, and eventually marries a VN woman who he later drifts apart from even though staying close to his brother in law who he fought with. At one point he tries to kill his XO and is court-martialed for it, but somehow manages to serve his time and rejoin the army for a very long career - totally unheard of but true! The problem with the book is that it is uneven, which keeps it from being a 5 star book... his coverage of certain battles is super finely detailed whereas his court martial and time in jail is barely a wisp of text. He tells more about using drugs and drinking than he does talking about his role as a medic and the training. Overall a good book and fills in some more stories from the 101st and the 302nd RF Co. He does a great job with the other cast of characters, and their stories and it's worth it just for that.

It irritates me a little to think that MGM, thanks largely to those That's Entertainment clip shows in the 1970s, is celebrated for its movie musicals, when in fact the genre was pioneered and perfected at other studios: Warner Bros. with its Busby Berkeley dance spectacles, RKO with its Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers cycle, and Paramount, where Ernst Lubitsch virtually invented the story musical with The Love Parade and subsequent re-teamings of Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald. (Oddly, today MacDonald is better known for her inferior and unsexy MGM teaming with Nelson Eddy.) MGM didn't achieve musical greatness until the end of the 1930s, when after the success of The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939), the studio put its associate producer, Arthur Freed, in charge of the film musicals unit. True, MGM had won a best-picture Oscar with The Broadway Melody (Harry Beaumont, 1929), but that was a standard backstage musical, not one in which the songs and dances are fully integrated into the plot. Besides, it's almost unwatchable today, whereas thanks to the charm of Chevalier and the sexiness of MacDonald in her revealing pre-Code frippery, but most of all to what is known as "the Lubitsch touch," The Love Parade is still enjoyable. Lubitsch's "touch" as a director was based on a sly conviction that the audience would get the joke, usually a naughty one, and it was perfected during the silent era, when things had to be shown, not told. So the film opens with a mostly silent demonstration of why Count Alfred Renard (Chevalier) has caused such a scandal with his dalliances in Paris that he has to be recalled to Sylvania and rebuked by Queen Louise (MacDonald). But this is also a film that wittily integrates sound into its sight gags, as the entire Sylvanian court eavesdrops on the burgeoning love of Alfred and Louise. The plot, derived by screenwriters Guy Bolton and Ernest Vajda from a French play, is standard, slightly sexist stuff about the prince consort, Alfred, feeling miffed by the fact that his marriage to the queen leaves him with nothing to do, but it's carried off well by the leads, as well as the saucy servants, Jacques (Lupino Lane) and Lulu (Lillian Roth), and a court full of skilled character actors like Eugene Pallette, Edgar Norton, and Lionel Belmore. It's too bad that the song score by lyricist Clifford Grey and composer Victor Schertzinger isn't better -- there are too many reprises of "Dream Lover," for example -- but Lubitsch's staging compensates for its weakness.

Did Jowan idolize Anders in the Circle, or maybe not? What if they escaped together once, or Jowan tried to escape with Anders or aided or hindered him in some way during one of his escape attempts? Or perhaps they successfully escape together in an AU, or meet in some possible timeline after the Warden has set Jowan free? I would love just about any scenario!

Anders/Justice

This is one of my favorite ships in all of DA, and I want every take on it, from tragic and fraught to more harmonious. For Awakening-era Anders/Justice, I’d love some confused, ambiguous feelings at Vigil’s Keep; Justice being Anders’ knight in shining armor who also smells weird and is a possessed corpse; hijinks with the Wardens. For DA2: missing each other, fighting with each other, finding ways to communicate despite their situation? Justice's experience of love and other mortal concepts is also something I'm really interested in seeing explored.

PROMPT: Beauty and the Beast/Sleeping Beauty AU. Anders gets lost in the Blackmarsh while fleeing from Templars and finds himself trapped in a deserted village. His only companion is a man calling himself “Kristoff,” who protects Anders but refuses to let him see his face. They grow closer, Anders starts suspecting that Kristoff is under a curse, there are complications when the Baroness shows up… or however you’d like to play it! I just feel these two would lend themselves really well to a dark fairy tale AU.

Anders is so mean and weird to Merrill, and she’s so gentle with him. I would love to see something with them maybe, almost reaching a more amiable level of understanding during DA2, or something post-game where Merrill runs into Anders somewhere or rescues him or is hiding him in disguise. “Cute elves with no self-preservation instinct.” Scary Merrill who's still cheerful and sweet is one of my favorite Merrills, so... do with that what you will!

Finally! Kind of! Let’s cause havoc” situation. I’d love them as pals daring each other to do stupid things in between darkspawn battles and misery, and I’d also love shipfic for them. Alternately: in a post-DA2 worldstate where Anders survived, how would they meet again?

A Rant

I'm kinda sick of the lies G stans spread and them taking their opinions as canon and saying how our posts with canons are nothing important.

Like love gwyn all you want and all but the girl is not important the acotar bigger plot and she is even less important now that there is a freaking crossover.

She was created to be Nesta's bff and that's it. She could get a book in the future but she is not getting a book before Elain, Mor or any other character that we met in the first tree books. Even sarah said the books are about the side characters from OG trilogy and who wasn't in the OG trilogy? GWEN. Sarah could have added her in acofas...you know the bridge book/novella between the OG trilogy and the new book but was she there? NO.

Her purpose was to add to Nesta's arc. She is a side character and all you people take this as insult when it is not. Nesta was a side character until she got her book and all she had to offer until then was further along the plot for Feyre because those were her books. Sarah literally says how she made Elain and Nesta these horrible sister to push Feyre to hunt because she needed to go to the Fae land somehow and she used side character(nesta and elain) to do that just like how she used gwyn to further Nesta's character arc. There is literally nothing wrong with that.

And now spreading around how gwyn is going to get a pov in cc3 when like WHY THE HELL SHE WOULD GET A POV IN CC? they look at things and see what they want to see and spread that opinion as fact when in reality it is just their wishful thinking. And they bully people into believing them which is a topic on its own ugh!!!!!

Also gwyn is important to plot and I'm like how? she is a valkyrie and I think that is going to come to play at the end but like that's it?

They spreaded around this illyrian plot when it was cut from Nessian book in the first place bc it is white savior and gwyn is not illyrian and she has no ties to illyria... and then they say she is Carythian so that's why but the girl doesn't even want to be called that... talk about knowing your fav character lol 🤪

Or how she is going to help with Bryce and when she doesn't even know the parallel universe and doesn't understand what Merrill is working on. This is not calling her stupid. This is me pointing out canon when they spread false information and their own wishfull thinking to make gwyn important to plot when she is not.

the girl has no ties to bigger plot for acotar or the crossover and with what sarah said crossover is going to affect the acotar plot so gwyn is more irrelevant than ever to the plot. She is not made. She is not illyrian. She doesn't want to be called Carythian even though they try to shove down her throat...she doesn’t understand the parallel univer... what can she add to the plot? Like literally... in canon nothing.

And after all of this they have the audacity call our plots points not important when we literally use canon in all of them.

When Bethany summoned ice from thin air, Varric reflected for the umpteenth time what a fantastic waste locking up all the mages had been for all those years.

“Thank you, Sunshine,” he said while scooping it into a handkerchief.  It would soak through eventually, but it was going to get the job done.

Hawke watched him with a raised eyebrow. “Was I the only one who thought the ice was for our drinks?”

“Ice in wine? Yes,” Fenris replied.

“I don’t know, it might have been nice to try it cold. Something new?”

Fenris shook his head.

“I’m an old man now,” Varric explained as he tied a knot to hold the ice in, “I have aches and pains, and in my time in the charming south, ice helped.”

“What aches?” Bethany asked.

“My wrist,” he replied. He rolled his eyes at Hawke’s failure to hide a childish smile. “There’s a cranking motion I have to do for Bianca and—”

Hawke was no longer pretending to listen seriously, giggling to herself, and Varric put his hands back on the table, regretting his choice to act out the motion in the air for more than just the predictable pain that came with it. He set the ice to do its work.

“Tell me more about how you crank Bianca,” Hawke said with a flutter of her eyelashes.

He shook his head. “I know I’m not the only one here suffering. Come on, Hawke, you’re practically a walking bruise at this point. Maybe you’d like to be put on ice for a bit.”

She grinned. “Well there was the old shoulder injury. And the knee injury, of course. Every time it rains it starts creaking. And I really did roll that one ankle too many times. It seems always on the verge of rolling again.” Bethany quietly began summoning more ice as she spoke. ”And, well who could forget my back that one time, except that the answer was all of you forgot my back or nothing would have happened to it in the first place…”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Bethany tied up the ice and handed it to her sister, who only used it to gesture in the air as she said, “Honestly, at this point I take a healing potion prior to fighting just so I can make the stabbing motion without wincing. And I’m still not half as fast as I used to be.”

Fenris raised an eyebrow. “I thought that was whisky.”

“You thought I was getting drunk before fights?”

He nodded. “I was worried about you. Now I know you are in too much pain to hold a blade. That’s much better.”

“Not after I take one of these,” Hawke said, wiggling a small vial in front of him. She seemed to remember the ice in her other hand at that point and after some consideration she balanced it on her right elbow, her smile fading into consternation. “And then take three more the minute we’re done, or I’d have to make you carry me home.”

“Give me that—” Bethany said, snatching the vial before Hawke had the chance to protest. She swirled it in the light, popped the cork to delicately sniff it, then sighed. “You really shouldn’t be taking four of these in one day.”

Hawke snatched it back with her tongue stuck out. “It’s better than taking a knife to the gut, but I’ll keep that in mind. Not all of us can shove healing magic into our shoulders after every fight.”

“Maker, don’t remind me. All that twirling has taken its toll.” She sighed. “And Alistair—all that plate mail on his big body—his knees are practically dust at this point. I think magic is all that’s holding them together.”

Hawke laughed and offered her elbow to Bethany, who prodded at it a bit with some magic. Fenris was conspicuously silent through all of this, and Varric just couldn’t help poking.

“What about you, elf?” he asked, “Where’s your worst pain? No, don’t tell me. It’s either the shoulder or the elbow, and my money’s on the elbow.”

Fenris took a slow drink of ale, and Hawke, to her credit, didn’t shout out the answer. “I may not know my age,” Fenris drawled, “But I am now certain I am younger than all of you. My joints are fine.”

Hawke laughed. “Maker, but you were a haggard teenager when we found you,” she snickered.

“Bull shit,” Varric replied. “And here’s how I know it’s bullshit and that it’s your elbow. I haven’t seen you do that over-the-head hack move in two years. Now I know you’re strong enough to lift that enormous sword of yours, but I’m guessing your elbow won’t let you do the follow-through.”

Fenris shrugged. “It was an inefficient maneuver,” he replied simply to Hawke’s giggles.

Bethany, who had prepared yet another handkerchief full of ice, turned to Varric and asked, “Should we play pin the ice pack on the elf? Honestly I’m guessing there are no wrong answers.”

Of course, with her time spent healing, she had an eye for these things. She leaned over and whispered in Varric’s ear.

He grinned. “Alright Mister-Younger-Than-The-Rest-of-Us, let’s have a demonstration of your peak physical condition. We’ll start with something nice and easy. Put your hand all the way up in the air, as far as it will go.”

Fenris rolled his eyes and started to raise his hand.

“The other hand,” Varric and Bethany protested at the same time.

Fenris considered the hand currently holding his cup of wine. “No.”

Hawke accepted the ice pack from Bethany and placed it on his shoulder for him.  “I really thought I’d be much older when all my conversations devolved into what hurt where and how bad,” she said, Seems like a conversation for people with white hair.”

Fenris gave her a very pointed look.

“I mean like Varric,” she sighed. “He’s not nearly gray enough for this conversation.”

“Thanks, Hawke.”

“Any time. Anyway I suppose we’ll really be lost when we start arguing over whose pain is the worst.”

“It’s you,” Bethany said simultaneously with Fenris’s “Yours is.”

Varric, who might have enjoyed a great sympathy for his poor wrist that started the entire conversation, had to agree. “We all saw—”

“Don’t bring up the Arishok,” Hawke interrupted flatly, “I’m so tired of talking about the blasted Arishok—”

“That golem-looking thing in the Deep Roads that crushed your foot,” he finished.

“I was going to say that time a Maker’s Fist blasted her right off a cliff on the Wounded Coast,” Bethany said, “I think she hit every shrub on the way down.”

“I was thinking of the Arishok,” Fenris said.

Hawke elbowed him.

“We all had our fair share,” she said, “What about that time Merrill got that spider bite and we had to carry her home?”

“That was nothing,” Varric said, “She was fine by the time we got back, but I think she was enjoying the ride. Void, she probably weighs less than Bianca, so it wasn’t some big imposition or anything. Whoever had to carry her staff got the worse end of that deal.”

“What about when Isabela got that nasty burn? I can still remember the smell,” Bethany said, scrunching up her nose.

“But you healed that in about a minute,” Hawke said, “She hardly suffered at all.”

The rest of the evening was spent arguing over not over which injury was the most grievous, but which injury was the stupidest in their history. Isabela’s hand blowing up twice its usual size because of what turned out to be a very infected splinter was right up there with the time a crab snapped Fenris’s bare toes and refused to let go until Varric bolted it. Varric personally felt that while Isabela’s injury was more serious, Fenris deserved the crown because he could have just done his lyrium thing at any moment to get away, but instead hopped around like an idiot for a solid minute before Hawke got him to hold still.

Regardless, the ice eventually melted, leaving them all a little soggy, a little nostalgic, and definitely ready for bed.

In their bedroom, after their slow, verbose goodbyes to friends and family that involved Hawke hugging everyone at least three times, including Fenris who was going nowhere, Fenris asked Hawke, “So what happens now?”

She frowned. “Well I was going to peel off this shirt and toss it in the hamper, and then normally I would take two more of these so I could go to bed, but Bethy just told me to limit myself to four.”

Fenris stared at the potion in her hand. “You’ve already had—that is not what she said—”

“Maybe a bath?” Hawke continued as if he had said nothing at all, “With those fizzy salts. That should help, right? Everyone always says those help. Have a bunch stored in a drawer somewhere.”

“No, I meant…” They had slowed down. Fenris had been mostly joking about the whisky, but he hadn’t really registered the extent to which Hawke was in pain. They were both in pain. “Are we…?” He didn’t even know how to phrase the question. What were they if not mercenaries, champions, and warriors? “Are we done?”

“With fighting?” She tossed her shirt away with a small grunt. “Maker, yes. That’s done. We’re old, it’s over, you couldn’t pay me to pick up my blades again, which no one does anymore anyway. May they rust wherever I dropped them last time we came home.”

He nodded, though he couldn’t quite tell if Hawke was serious or not. “Just like that?” he asked.

Hesitating a little, her flippant attitude smoothed into sincerity as she walked over to him and rested her arms over his shoulders.  “Do you remember that time you got bashed over the head?”

“Not really, no,” he replied very honestly.

“Right. Of course. I do, though, and after tonight’s conversation, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The slower I get, the stiffer I get, the greater the chance it happens again. Only this time I might not finish off our assailants on my own, or get you to the healer in time, or be able to carry you at all if I have to.”

Fenris rolled his bad shoulder. That thought had crossed his mind once or twice, that should extraordinary circumstances occur as they often did around Hawke, there was less certainty of them prevailing. Still, he didn’t know what a future of quiet peace looked like.

Perhaps it looked like Hawke, slowly undressing as she spoke.

“So I’m done,” she continued, “Didn’t realize it until tonight, but I am serious. Someone else can clean up Darktown or mend the Wounded Coast. I’ll be in the bath, with my salts.” She tossed the rest of her clothes and sauntered toward the bath, pausing to look back at him. “Are you coming?”

Questions of the future aside, what could Fenris do but follow? She had certainly led him to worse places before. “Always.”

A series of ficlets featuring Merrill, following prompts from the Stories of Thedas Twitter.

Chapter Five: Cold

Pairings: Merrill & Tamlen, Tamlen & Mahariel, Merrill x Mahariel (implied) Fandom: Dragon Age II, Pre-Dragon Age: Origins Rating: G

The overcast sky drags low over Kirkwall, belly dragging across the tallest homes in Hightown and shrouding them in white. Down in Lowtown they make little clouds of their own, children at play cupping their mouths around their mouths and roaring like dragons over a nest of gold.

It’s hard not to think of Tamlen when he was a boy, chasing Mahariel around camp until she turned and trained her toy bow on him. The string slapping against empty air heralded a volley of imaginary arrows that would stop him in his tracks, and whenever one accused the other of cheating it was always her they turned to for the final verdict.

Her justice always favoured Mahariel. She never had the cool head of Mythal, nor the vengeful heart of Elgar’nan. She just liked it when she could make a pretty girl smile.

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken

The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Artist research

George Boorujy

G. Boorujy went to the University of Miami initially to study Marine Biology but ended up majoring in fine art.

He is an artist showing the relationship between us and the environment, especially our interaction with nature and the way we see it. He has created work for the Wildlife Conservation Society, the New York Parks Department, for over a decade illustrated the Birdwatch column for the Guardian.

Boorujy, an artist devoted to highlighting and protecting natural world. He says, “This shouldn’t be a partisan issue! Democrats, as well as Republicans, need to breathe.  The environment affects the Rich, Poor, Black, White, Urban, Rural, male, female, trans and other. After learning about the environmental threats to wildlife in Southern Florida, Boorujy decided to use his art to shock and shake up his audience. He says: “I don’t think of the images as containing all that much violence. I think of it more as an exploration of the reality of things around us”.

Boorujy’s work always features animals.  The animals, while not quite anthropomorphic,  reminds a little bit of human behavior. His realistic, anatomically correct drawings of animal species that one can recognize portray more than just an animal. The animals in Boorujy’s work show familiar and relatable feelings. The drawings are made close to human size because audience tend to react to an animal differently when it is the size of a human.

Artist says: When I paint animals I can express human emotion better than I can in a painting of a person”.  When you look at pictures containing humans you get distracted by hairstyles and clothes. Animals are raw. They take your guard down. I find them a much more effective vehicle for expressing human emotion. Since animals don’t have much of personal possessions or belongings it is easier to see the value of life and how precious it is. His works remind us that we are animals as well and all share our environment no matter how much we as a species are different and more evolved. 

Artist tries to show only necessary parts of the image and erase everything else that image can do without. It’s also a way to focus ones eye on what is important in an image. Putting animals in a white background makes the viewer focus on the subject and show that protection of animals is necessary.

Boorujy is "interested in how we shape, mark and manipulate the landscape," a process made graphically apparent in the rapid melt of glaciers.

Peyton: No more love songs. Please. Art: It’s just Debussy. Peyton: Not a romantic bone in your body, lass? You and your respectful yawns. Shona: I do! Did you see that stained glass? Peyton [chuckling]: Alright, play it, m’boy.

[Noa watches incredulously as Brookes pours a glass of port from her workdesk.] Brookes: Don’t tell Clar. [raising her brows as if, “Want a swig?”] Noa [shaking her head fervently]: It’s only 9:23 AM! Brookes [downing her glass]: Doctor’s orders.

[A card game is interrupted when Duke spots a policeman.]

Duke: You, with the beard. Out. No more alphas in the house. Sergey: What? That’s discrimination. [indicating Mati] What’s he doing here? Duke: He’s made of money. Are you made of money? Sergey: ... Duke: See ya, sucka. [Sergey scoffs and exits the door.] Duke [turning to Mati]: Dodging bullets, aren’t you? Don’t worry, you’re very much welcome here, M.

“Come work for me,” Mati asks Giles. 

“I’m not done with my list.”

“Work with me,” Mati asks Brookes. 

“I’m not playing master of disguise.”

Mati sighs, tapping his finger. With whom is he to share the load of maintaining his spacious tailor shop? He could hire a local boy, but what if he finds out?

Lightbulb. 

The Dejavu Club.

“To what do I owe the pleasure?” Duke, the club owner smiles at the tailor.

Later, Duke taps his utensil on the glass thrice for attention. “There’s a job opening for M.M. Tailoring.” 

They all look at Mati, who suddenly feels very small.

“Are you good with your hands?”

“You can be his legs,” one gentleman quips at the one-armed Tommy, who scowls. “Watch it,” Sheila warns.

“Are you good with people?”

Still no volunteer.

“At least… bookkeeping?”

Yawn. 

“Okay, the only requirement is your name falls in line with my brand.”

Jokingly, of course, but then one very tall blond man slowly stands up to introduce himself. “Merrill Mason. I may be none of the three things you previously stated, but I don’t see why I wouldn’t give you a leg up.”

A pause. Then Mati announces, “You’re hired.”

Laughter and applause, followed by clinks of glasses.

Merrill is basically Dr. Guild without the glasses and dexterity.

Duke is the clean-shaven Marcus, often with a cigar. The Dejavu Club is like a secret club in which the “Rife” characters, feeling understandably neglected, show up and joke about being time travellers. Mati would join it on Brookes’ recommendation, and Tommy would be the one who introduced her to it. Like, a chain reaction to the earliest of ideas in which the characters once related.

[EJ sits down at the gambling table.] Duke: Kid, do you even know the game? EJ: Have you seen my car? Duke [guffawing]: That’s a good one!

Mati: I meant to dial G, not M for murder! Giles: Whoawhoawhoa, hold up. I’m not that wanted, I assure you. Mati: Let me be sensible, okay? [hangs up, sighing as he buries his face in his hands] Why did I think this was a good idea?

Rose: Psst, Art? Play happy birthday to Serafina. Art [frowning]: Serafina? Rose [widened eyes]: You know! The fairy! Art: Oh, you mean Fifi.

Hardy: I’d volunteer to be your birthday cake. Rose: Wonderful! EJ, can I borrow your petrol? Fifi will no doubt be serenading. Or perhaps, [touching on his shoulder] he could deliver a blow, right, Giles? Hardy [hands up]: I take it back.

[Before he could no longer move agilely, Art would occasionally escape from his care home.]

Ranit: Perhaps if you’d strip him of all his belongings, then he wouldn’t have to run away. Edith: ... Ranit: Trust me, I know him. Edith: That still sounds like prison. Ranit: ... Is there a piano?

Ranit [pointing to her first missing tooth]: I was roller skating. Ranit [indicating her second missing tooth]: And then this fell out. Ranit: They said I should do the Mona Lisa. [The little girl sticks her tongue out through the gap.]

[Back at the hotel after EJ’s wake. Art reaches out for the blue notebook, but young Ranit holds it out of reach.]

Art: Okay, Nancy Drew, what’ve you got? Ranit: “Shell”. Art: Hm.  Ranit: If he was a genius, then why are there so many crossed out? Art: For him, music was like math and vice versa. This was an equation he tried to prove true, but what it actually needed was a moment of serendipity. Ranit [of the Abendrot’s last play]: Does it sound like what we heard today? Art: I’d play it for you, but there’s no piano. Unless... [checking his watch] Sweets, there’s still time. Let’s go.

[As “Shell” finishes, young Ranit finds herself transported from the shop to a certain beach, with Art seated besides her on the piano.]
