Just rewatched Pocket Monsters Movie 8 (Lucario, Mew, and the Wave-Guiding Hero/”Lucario and the Mystery of Mew”; part of my Japanese rewatch) and ahhh I forgot how great it was

It does well on building on what the other Advanced Generation movies did (and not doing what didn’t work... Deoxys [I liked it but it did have more shortcomings than the Jirachi and Lati@s movies lol). Enjoyed the intriguing-from-the-jump plot, how well the movie was paced, how Lucario came to realize his master didn’t betray him but was trying to protect him, Satoshi getting heated when Lucario tried to say Pikachu just wanted to get away from him (when Mew had borrowed him to play around) and telling Haruka and Masato about how he and Pikachu got friendlier with each other early on (which was a neat moment since they never heard it in-series), the voice acting and soundtrack were spot-on.

The dub, according to Dogasu’s sub/dub comparison, chose to rewrite some scenes that didn’t need to be rewritten which changes some of the intent in the dialogue--in one, after a vision of the past, they’re quick to condemn Lucario’s master as a betrayer when originally there was healthy skepticism about the legend they were told... Even then, I do remember liking the movie a lot years ago, and it was 4Kids’s last movie dub before the voice-actor fiasco happened and I stopped watching sometime after; makes it valuable to be watching things in Japanese and actually knowing enough to get used to it through sagas like Johto and Advanced Generation where there aren’t easily-available subs to use; like with my Japanese Digimon rewatch, it’s made me rediscover my love for the series in a new light heading into the Battle Frontier stuff, and it’d be neat if eventually the movies at least (way too many episodes to tackle) got a more faithful dub to do them justice. 🧐
