65th Grammys 2023: Best R&B Song
This category always trips people up because the general audience forgets it is a songwriter's award. The focus is on the lyrics and structure, not your feelings. Let's get into the nominees!
"This Category recognizes excellence in R&B songwriting that utilize a stylistic intention, song structure, lyrical content and/or musical presentation to create a sensibility that reflects the broad spectrum of R&B music style and culture. Songs that contain samples or interpolations are eligible."
Cuff It - Denisia "Blu June" Andrews, Beyoncé, Mary Christine Brockert, Brittany "Chi" Coney, Terius "The-Dream" Gesteelde-Diamant, Morten Ristorp, Nile Rodgers & Raphael Saadiq
Picture it: you're looking good and feeling great, in your shiniest outfit, and you're heading to a disco - yes, in 2023, with a disco ball and everything - with your equally carefree friends. Cuff It is the soundtrack to that moment. No heavy subject matter, no hateration or holleration in the dancery. Just the declaration of a good ass time. It's a beautifully constructed song, musically and melodically, and the lyrics are playful and clever. But as much as I love this song I don't know if it lyrically stands up to some others in this category.
Good Morning Gorgeous - Mary J. Blige, David Brown (Lucky Daye), Dernst Emile II (D-Mile), Gabriella Wilson (H.E.R.) & Tiara Thomas
Some of the writers on this track are my favorite R&B acts of today. Shoutout to HER & Lucky Daye.
From a lyrical standpoint, Good Morning Gorgeous has the kind of vulnerability MJB is known for. And in a world where the music is a bit shallow, and young people are more depressed and anxious than ever before, the honest and uplifting message of this song is truly refreshing and pertinent. It has the kind of song structure where the verse tells you what's wrong, and the chorus gives you a solution. Good Morning Gorgeous is, in my opinion, a strong contender for this award.
Hrs & Hrs - Hamadi Aaabi, Dylan Graham, Priscilla Renea (Muni Long), Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell, Brandon John-Baptiste, Isaac Wriston & Justin Nathaniel Zim
When this song first hit the airwaves, it was by far the sexiest R&B song we had heard in a while. Hrs & Hrs brought a level of maturity that had been absent in current R&B. The rhyming in the first verse is also songwriting magic:
Tumblr media
Hrs & Hrs wraps the mundane, romantic, sweet and normal things about a person you love into one gorgeous package, and excludes the toxicity that exists in today's relationship songs. 10/10 incredible record.
Hurt Me So Good - Akeel Henry, Michael Holmes, Luca Mauti, Jazmine Sullivan & Elliott Trent
I know the kind of relationship Jazmine is singing about here. It's the kind where you're fully cognizant of how unfit the person is for you, but your loneliness/lack of self-love makes you stay and accept terrible treatment anyway. You've either been there, or know someone who has. The juxtaposition of wanting to stay and leave all at once are all throughout the words of the song (and captured in the title). It's a song that opposes itself in the same way that we oppose our own common sense in these situations. This is genius songwriting that fully encapsulates a complicated human experience.
Please Don't Walk Away - PJ Morton
I don't know the definition of chords and keys, but what I do know is this entire song is in the key of "unanswered question." It just is. Maybe someone that knows keys and chords can expound.
We love musicians over here. PJ Morton gives us a very simple song with an earnest plea. An R&B tale as old as time. And he delivers it with gorgeous piano and intense soul. The whole thing sounds like a cry. It is simple, straightfoward and beautiful; R&B perfection.
Who Should Win?
This is actually harder than I thought it would be. But I would give this songwriting Grammy to Good Morning Gorgeous, for the uniqueness in subject matter and the positivity in the message.
My close second is Hrs & Hrs, a breath of fresh air sonically. And my close 3rd: Hurt Me So Good.
Let's see who gets it this weekend!

Juice
This story is true. I have proof, but I cannot show you.
In 2020, I was having a hard time finding my photographic voice after moving back to Baltimore. One night, just before Christmas, I was taking a long exposure of Club Larae in Oliver. An SUV sped into frame and then stopped and the driver threw open his door. I immediately assumed the worst.
The man said are you a photographer. I said yes and stammered something about how cool the club looked lit up at night. He reached into his dashboard and hastily produced a Nikon DSLR and a 4x6 photo album. He started talking to me about making photos, and showed me his collection of boudoir Mrs. Claus photos he had made with women from around the neighborhood over the years. Then he said he would grant me the juice - the power and essence - of photography if I could pass his test.
The test was this: I had to sing along to a song of his choosing. If I could do it, I could take his portrait and gain the Juice. Fail, and I would gain nothing. The only catch was this: I could never share that portrait for as long as I took photos, lest the Juice be revoked. I agreed.
He cued up his CD player, and I started recording a video from my iPhone. And there it was: “P-I-M-P” by G-Unit ft Snoop Dogg. I had worked at Finish Line in 2002-2004. I had belted out this song while stacking boxes in the stockroom my senior year of high school.
The Juice was mine. And it still is.
I found my photographic voice that night. I just can’t show you the proof.
