Once and Always // Avalon-verse // Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary - After tragedy strikes, an unlikely young hero takes her rightful place among the Power Rangers to face off against the team's oldest arch nemesis Robo Rita and her husband Zord Zedd.
-
Prologue
One fateful day in 1993, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa escaped her Space Dumpster prison and attacked Earth. Five teenagers with attitude had their lives changed forever when Zordon chose them to defend the planet. In the decades since, many more heroes have continued their legacy.
The people of Earth rest easy, knowing their home is protect by Power Rangers.
But in 2023, Angel Grove is rocked by the reappearance of monsters they thought were forever gone…
..
.
Billy Cranston gasped, forcing his tired body to push itself into a standing position. His entire body ached. Lip split at the corner and a dull ache in his jaw from the scissor kick he hadn't expected from the Putty that wiggled and wobbled in front of him.
Taunting him.
Along with the rest of the putties that converged in a group.
Billy clenched his teeth and fists, glaring at the gray mass in front of him. More, importantly, glaring at the roboticized space with that stood before him. Robo Rita. She cackled, the same cackle that used to haunt his dreams through battle after battle against the forces of evil.
"Any last words?" Robo Rita taunted. She slowly but surely spun her staff in her hands. The red gem at the top gleamed in the sunlight, making Billy wince and look away every time it waved across his face. She chuckled quietly.
"Just a few," Billy replied. He reached down and grabbed his morpher. With gusto, he thrust it forwards. "It's morphin' time! Triceratops!" In a bright blue blast of light, he morphed into the Mighty Morphin' Blue Ranger. For the first time in several years. But it was just like riding a bike, the second he felt the power of the Morphing Grid flow through him, with the suit encompassing him…he was invincible.
Rita growled. Not that she hadn't expected it; she was no stranger to seeing her nemesis in front of her. But even the mere sight of a rainbow color made her circuits fry. "Putties!" She cried. Her minions all turned to look at her. "Grind him into blue dust!"
All at once, the putties leapt forward and attacked Billy once more. He easily fended them off. Knocking them left and right as he worked to get towards the Space Witch. Once he knocked enough putties out of the way, he swung a solid punch towards Robo Rita. She deflected the attack with a swing of her staff, catching Billy on the wrist. His arm flew aside, and she struck him in the side, knocking him to his knees.
"Ugh!"
Rita jabbed him hard in the ribs with the blunt end of her staff. When she pulled her staff back, the putties converged once more, grabbing Billy and threw him to the ground. As he moved to get back to his feet, a yellow light charged around Rita's staff and she sent the energy forward, knocking him in the chest and throwing him across the grassy top of the seaside cliff.
"Why'd you lead me here?" Rita demanded. "Was your grand plan just to die outside in the fresh sea breeze?" She mockingly waved her wand as another breeze blew across them. What would've been an ominous wind if the sky was dark, combatted by the bright sunshine surrounding them.
At that moment, a cascade of light appeared between Billy and Rita. Red, Yellow, Pink, Black, White, Orange, and Purple. Jason Scott, Trini Kwan, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Tommy Oliver, and Avalon and Bailey Mitchell.
Rita scoffed when she looked at the rest of the rangers that appeared before her. A far cry from previous years where she would've started to quake at the sight of the colorful team. "Oh, you brought friends. Now, it's a reunion!" If it were possible for the already slasher-like smile on her roboticized face to grow wider, it would have.
"Got your distress call," Zack declared, reaching out to help Billy off the ground. Kimberly stood on Billy's other side, hefting him up. "And we zipped here as fast as we could."
"Thanks, Zack," Billy replied. The group turned to face Robo Rita once more.
"Man, that's Rita?" Jason asked.
"I can't believe she's back," Kimberly said.
"Neither can I," Trini said.
"The robo look's not for her," Avalon agreed.
"She'll look better on a junk heap," Bailey said.
"But we can take her!" Tommy declared. The rangers all nodded, falling into their familiar fighting stances. Waited for the first movement to be made.
"Destroy them all!" Rita screeched.
The rangers raced toward the putties and leapt into attack the putties while Billy took on Rita. Jason, Tommy, and Bailey showed off their strong martial arts skills as they fought, taking on each putty that came toward them with a strong offensive. Trini's Praying Mantis style, slightly more on the defensive, had the Putties come toward her while she took them out with ease. Kimberly flipped back and forth—literally—between putties as they tried to take her down, she was just too graceful to be grabbed. Zack slipped in and out of the wiggling putties with his Hip Hop Kido armed with his strong punches and kicks that knocked the putties into dust. Avalon, with all the strength foisted in her, used a very combative fighting style that took out the Putties left and right with ease.
Billy, on the other hand, took on Rita himself. He had never fought her one on one before, and the mechanized version of her wasn't making the fight easy. Every time he moved to make a strike against her, she would parry it. Finally, she knocked him up into the air with a swipe of his legs from her staff.
As he spun around, Billy struck out his elbow, striking her directly in the face. The shockwave of that hit, bone against metal, shot through his body. Like smacking his funny bone times ten. Crouching, Billy looked to Rita's face, which was broken at the jaw, to his elbow. Surveyed the damage. It felt like she had actually bitten him.
The irony wouldn't be lost on me, Billy thought, looking back to her once more. He slowly curled his fingers, flexed them. Hissed through his teeth in pain. Maybe that move wasn't the smartest one you've ever made, Billy.
"Oh, my face!" Rita cried. She ran her hands over her face, from the smoothness of her forehead to the jagged mess just under her nose. With a deeply guttural growl, Rita turned back to Billy, tightening her grip on her staff so hard it sounded like it cracked within her grasp. "I was having fun! But you want to get serious?" Her eyes and the red gem on her staff started to glow a hellish red. "Come on, let's get deadly serious!"
"Oh boy," Billy murmured.
"You know I loved that face. Just like I love all that power in my new robot body." The redness glowed brighter and brighter, though also held a darkish tint to it. As if dark energy was coursing through her veins and into her staff. "But I'll gladly give up some of that energy for a spell that kills!"
A devastating beam of energy erupted from her staff and shot towards Billy.
"Billy!" Trini cried.
Billy turned his head away, raising his arm to shield himself. Waited for the pain. Found it didn't come. He turned and opened his eyes, seeing the exact moment Trini was struck by the blast meant for him, that hefted her up into the air, stuck in the swirling red and black vortex.
"Trini!".
The red-black energy lifted Trini overhead, towards the cliffside before it erupted in a dramatic energy blast that pinned Billy straight to the ground.
"NO!" Jason screamed.
The resulting shockwave knocked the rangers off their feet, destroyed the Putties nearby that were too close to the shockwave. Finally, the pressure relented and the rangers, scrambling to get up, raced to Billy's side. Billy took off his helmet, kneeling down by the cliffside, eyes frantically scanning for any sign of life. Suddenly, he pitched to the side from Jason's shove, where he yanked off his helmet and took Billy's place, searching.
"No…" Kimberly fell to her knees, grasping at the ground with her gloved hands. Tommy knelt beside her, pressing one hand to her shoulder, the other clenched into a fist. Avalon and Bailey grasped at each other. Zack let out a quiet curse under his breath.
Billy lay where he landed, shoved aside, stretched out on his side, breathing heavily, staring in disbelief at nothing.
"Goodbye Trini Kwan," Rita said then teleported from sight.

Genuine Question. Why are you and so many other people deeply upset when TV shows and movies kill off characters when their long-standing actors die. I have always thought that is the most respectful thing that can be done. Honoring an actor by retiring a character. Am I wrong to think that way?
If the shows or movies were to handle it respectfully and not copy the actors cause of death for the characters, I would agree with you that its respectful, speaking as someone who while I have issues with Farewell Sarah Jane, I will acknowledge they handled Sarah's death respectfully and never once mentioned how she died, just giving us her funeral and how many people whose life's she's impacted in a positive way.
But sadly nowadays, shows and movies really seem to vary in how they handle the characters deaths, sometimes just seeming to copy the actors cause of death. MCU is the biggest example as look, I get it, Wakanda Forever was always going to be difficult with Chadwick's death, but quick question: when killing off T'Challa, why did he have to die from some incurable disease that not many knew he was suffering from, disturbingly similar to Chadwick dying from cancer which sadly has no cure yet but was confirmed to have not told many non-family friends he had it??? Why couldn't it be any other cause of death??? Like yes the movie handles the funeral and grief well, but the cause of death being similar to Chadwick is just gross in my opinion. And then you got Descendants where...honestly, it just came off as them wanting to get Carlos out of the way so they can have no shame in continuing to milk a franchise that should have ended at the third film. Like yes, I'll give them this: they didn't outright say his cause of death so hey they didn't copy Cameron Boyce's cause of passing....but the fact that in Royal Wedding, a set up for future Descendants stuff, implies Carlos', Cameron's character who was alive last we saw in Descendants 3 (as it was one of last few projects Cameron had filmed), is now somehow dead cause leaving Descendants finished was just hard for Disney. And now you got Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Once & Always where...so far from the specials description Minh, Trini's daughter, seems to be out for revenge after a tragedy took place and in behind the scenes photos, Minh along with Billy and Zack seem to be at a cemetery and on a hiking trails website, someone in their review, uploaded a photo of a upturned car while confirming Power Rangers was filming it in that area....I'm sorry, but if they not only proceed to kill Trini but also proceed to kill her in a similar way to Thuy Trang's cause of death, it is beyond disrespectful and feels gross of Power Rangers to do as up until this point it had been clear for them to avoid associating Trini with cars, but now its worrying if they just stopped caring about that.
And I really need to ask this: even if the actor is dead, why does the character need to die with them??? Sarah Jane Adventures ended on Sarah Jane still being alive with a later Doctor Who comic confirming she was alive still, it was only in 2020 lockdown adventures they confirmed she was dead. And this is really only something I learnt from a lost media video, but Father Ted when Ted's actor sadly died during production of the finale, still ended with Ted being alive. Hell, let's go back to Power Rangers quickly: Rita's Japanese actress, Machiko Soga, had sadly passed away during production of Power Rangers: Mystic Force, so what did Power Rangers do? They confirmed Rita since being turned good at the end of Zordon era, had become the Mystic Mother who appears in Mystic Force, keeping the character alive even with the actress's death.
Like, I do get sometimes killing the character off (Princess Leia coming to mind....even if her death was still badly done), but at the same time, it wouldn't hurt sometimes to leave the character alive and if you must kill them off, do it in a respectful manner and for the love of all things holy, please don't copy the actors cause of death. That's just gross to do and only serves to upset already mourning fans of the actors.

I feel like Ryan is in an echo chamber. I went on his page to see what he said about the name and after being disappointed by his not response I see retweeeting Matt propaganda!! This is my weekly question to you, how can anyone call themselves PR fans and be okay with the poor treatment of iconic characters. These aren’t like nobodies. This is the same cast as the movie! Like how can you mess up so many characters and be okay, even proud of that? I guess I got a follow up. As a writer is this just unchecked ego? Or misguided understanding of PR?
i mean......i don't want to psychoanalyze the guy, that's not my business. i don't know anything about him except the projects he writes, so that's the only thing i can judge
i don't this the problem is not understanding PR. we know from years of his books that he understands PR. again, rereading pre-Forever Rangers GGPR and even MMPR/TMNT, while they had some flubs, they were not the mess the relaunch is. even with their problems they were enjoyable to read and felt like PR. even Necessary Evil, as much as i criticize it overall, had its high points
but i've said this before about his writing, i think he has a problem of taking on too much at one time, and when he does that, he has trouble holding everything together. ESPECIALLY when he throws all these big plots into one convoluted story. like, it's obvious he has really ambitious plans here! Zordon and Zedd's backstory and how that relates to Eltar and Angry Bearded Zordon being in control of the Empyreals, Candice being a secret Eltarian Guardian, Grace creating a new ranger from the stolen Dragon Coin...and not even going into everything happening on the Power Rangers side. they're all great ideas! but it's SO much at once, and it feels like the actual Mighty Morphin team are just pawns used to get to these parts of the story he actually wants to tell instead of actually making the story.....about the Mighty Morphin team. in early stories, no matter how huge the scope got, the story was ALWAYS driven by the Mighty Morphin team and their unique dynamics and how they affected, and were affected by, the plot. to contrast the rangers just feel SO secondary in #9 - passive and almost interchangeable in their dialogue. because....they just don't feel important to this story
WHICH, believe it or not, is FINE, if that's the story Ryan wants to tell. and some of the parts of MM ARE interesting! i've grown to like Candice! i want to know what Zedd's deal is! Ryan's genuinely good at world-building! but that's why he should stay on the Power Rangers side and maybe just be a consultant for a new author on the Mighty Morphin book. i'm not reading a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers book......that's not going to give me the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. at least not in a meaningful way
while i'm on that though, that's why everything with Matt is so annoying, because the actual MMs being so secondary while Matt takes the spotlight and drives the New Green storyline is why he comes off as being a Creator's Pet at best and a self-insert at worst. it's always been clear that Matt is one of Ryan's favorite characters, so showing him off as the Cool New Ranger!!!!!!! on twitter isn't at all a surprise (and maaaaaaybe related to how, if we're looking at overall reaction and book sales, his reveal as the New Green was kind of a flop. don't believe Twitter stans)

Tagged by @myletternevercame and @bottled-bliss and @heartonfirewrites and @lilmissuncreative. Thank you all!
How many works do you have on AO3?
34
What’s your total AO3 word count?
337,597, apparently? Somehow? Idk????
What are your top-5 fics by kudos?
Instead Of One Day Of Presents (We Have Eight Crazy Nights)
Just Fake It (And No One Will Know You’re In Over Your Head)
This Is For
Going Through The Unimaginable
There Is No Easy Way To Explain
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I absolutely do. If I don’t, it’s 100000% because life got in the way, which is rude of it.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Oh wow, I think all of them have happy endings? I’m not really a hopeful ending type of person, like, I need the resolutions to have all been resolved.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I think on a technicality I’d have to say Going Through The Unimaginable, purely because it takes place after TLJ? I guess? It’s still got a happy ending so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I guess you can consider the unhappy ending being the SW canon itself, but yeah…..¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Do you write crossovers?
Ask me about my Punisher/Fringe crossover, or the two Punisher/FDTD crossovers. You know, when I write them. Eventually. It’s happening.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Nope.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Not really….I have one Damerey fic where I attempted to write some smut and I don’t think it turned out half bad, but I tend to just get to hot and heavy and then fade to black. There’s one fic that I’m working on that MAY include some smut, if I can figure out how to make it happen.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Thank fuck no.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but that would be kinda cool.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not technically, but @mylettercame and I are talking heavily about Camp Culebra and I’m considering it a collab because I said so.
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
I have a few, but my first and forever and ever ship will always be Kim and Tommy from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Well, I want to finish ALL my WIPs, but there is a vignette-style sequel to Just Fake It that I while I do love it a lot, I need to A, actually finish Just Fake It, and B, the MCU is so different from what it was when I started dreaming it up that I just don’t know if I can wrap my head around making it happen. We’ll see.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, and especially heated arguments. I once wrote an entire piece of original fiction that was based off a context-less argument between two unmanned characters.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Fight scenes.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
That’s actually a great question, because I got my start in reading fic in the Sailor Moon fandom, and there’s a LOT of that in it, which like, it totally works. I think there’s a time and a place for it, and I think that if it’s done right, it’s great. I also think that context is super important for readers who don’t speak the language to understand what’s being said without having to scroll alllllll the way to the end of the chapter.
What’s the first fandom you wrote for?
I was in Darcyland in the MCU for a loooooong time. I mean, I’m not not in it anymore, but like…that’s all I read for a good few years
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I mean, I love all my children (okay, so there’s one that I really don’t love, not naming names). Honestly, what I love the most are my WIPs. Some of them are just SO ambitious that it’s taking a long time. Also, you know, life and building a company are all things I’m dealing with.

COMIC REVIEW - POWER RANGERS: SINS OF THE FUTURE
On Wednesday, October 28th, POWER RANGERS: Sins of the Future will be released from Boom Studios. News first broke of this graphic novel back in February, and next week the wait is over! Over the past couple of months BOOM! Studios have given us a first look, a preview earlier this month, and another preview just yesterday!
When Jen returns from the future, she and Wes are attacked by a mysterious stranger who has dire news — the timelines have been altered with deadly consequences and Jen is to blame! The shocking identity of their accuser sets them on a collision path with an enemy they never expected. Can Jen and Wes survive the threats to their pasts, presents and futures? Or will it be the end of everything as they know it?
Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:
“Will the our actions in the past define us forever? Is it within our ability to change by looking back at the past? Only if we are willing to make tough choices and commit to them through hard work.
Power Rangers: Sins of the Future is a fascinating story steeped in the lore of Power Rangers Time Force and, by extension, Power Rangers HyperForce. Serving as a sequel to the first and a prequel of the other, Sins of the Future takes place five years after the events of the show in both the past and the future timelines.
Through past previews of the comic, we see that Jen Scotts and Wes Collins are trying to maintain their relationship despite orders from Time Force Command. To Time Force, it’s strictly all business and no pleasure to stop rogue Cyclobots with no master. Jen and Wes have other plans with the time remaining on one particular trip, and it ends in explosive disaster… literally. With the appearance of a new Black Time Force Power Ranger, the mystery is only beginning.
Overall, I enjoyed Power Rangers: Sins of the Future. Writers Matthew Erman and Trey Moore (story by credit) did their homework when writing this, making a satisfying sequel to Power Rangers Time Force that stays true to the continuity of the show. This story slots nicely to explain events that happened in HyperForce, the Power Rangers Ninja Steel crossover ‘Dimensions in Danger’ and even the comics event Shattered Grid.
My note to readers is to take it slow and really pay attention to small details and the dialogue. Otherwise, you may miss small cameos by a few HyperForce characters. Being a show based in time travel, Power Rangers Time Force actually did very little of that. This graphic novel did a complete one-eighty, with timeline changes and glimpses into the past and future of the Power Rangers universe. I would almost suggest watching a few important episodes of Time Force before reading the graphic novel. I admit having to look up a couple characters I forgot about, but overall if you are a huge fan of the series this shouldn’t be a problem.
As for serving as a prequel to HyperForce, it’s ok if you did not watch the online RPG from Hyper RPG. Although faithful watchers of that show will be excited with the references made to the early formation of the branch of Time Force. I was pleased with how the graphic novel opened up for more narrative possibilities in the future.
In regards to the art, Guiseppe Cafaro makes his return from past original graphic novels, Power Rangers: The Psycho Path and Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon. Cafaro continues the wonderfully detailed artwork with rich setting and accurate representation of actor’s likenesses. It seems like BOOM! Studio has made him the official artist for these one shot stories and I hope that trend continues! The colors by Francesco Segala are vibrant, mixed with wonderful effects that bring the art to life and enhance the time effects we see. As always, letterer Ed Dukeshire is a power force for everything Power Rangers, and this issue is no exception.
Power Rangers: Sins of the Future continues the trend of fantastic original graphic novels for the franchise. It’s a shame we get these only once a year, but patience is rewarded with quality. Highly recommended.”

((Early Schedule means earlier releases of this.))
Tumblr media
I am so glad the first non-Zord Power Ranger fight was Jason. While everyone says Tommy is their favorite Ranger, mine was always Jason. I like Red, he was the first Karate Guy and he was a great leader. With the added benefit of him showing up in the upcoming Power Ranger Team Up for Beast Morphers, he was a shoe in to represent the Rangers against the Turtles.
Tumblr media
With the upcoming Crossover between MLP and Transformers in the comics, you could look at the two Megaman/Sonic Crossovers since one of the writers for that will be working on it. But the current Crossover with TMNT and Power Rangers is a good example of what to expect. So many fun interactions.
Tumblr media
One of the more questionable things is how Jason scales to other Rangers. Specifically Rocky with the Ninja Morphin Powers. A lot of people think they don’t because its a different set of powers that in theory would be more powerful than the originals. But this is what Ninjor said...
You now possess the power of ninja deep in your souls. Come now and learn of your new gifts. Behold the power of grace and beauty of your new Ninja Zords. These zords have drivin by the forces of the ninja and it fuse with light and strength. There are far superior to the zords of the past. Well, before your power came from the brute strength of the dinosaurs. Now it comes from the swift intelligent cutting of the ninja. Your new power coins come with new more advanced powers.
Those new advanced powers? They’re the Ninja Forms. These predate the Civilian Powers later Rangers would have. While useful to fight off the Tengu Warriors (and Rito), they usually morph when it comes to fighting the Monster of the day. And outside the Metallic Armor (an add-on by Zordon and Alpha), there was nothing different from their original Dino Ranger Powers. Same costume. Same weapons. Just an in-between state that allows them to defeat the stronger mooks. All this plus the various team ups where Jason can stand alongside other later Rangers (including the supposed superior Zeo), Jason should likely scale to Red Ninja Morphin Rocky.
Tumblr media
Ever wondered how Jason got his Dino Coin back? Boom’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2018 Annual explains it. Rocky kept it around like Adam did in Space. Only instead of keeping it, he decided to give it back to Jason after he was done being the Gold Ranger. Thus the later appearances of them have Jason with Dino Morphin and Rocky with Ninja Morphin (yes, he does use the Ninja Morphin Powers in his team up).
Tumblr media
Now how could I tell he’s using Ninja Morphin and not Dino Morphin? When Rocky does his fighting stance, he does an Ape Pose. His animal was the Ape. So in between Forever Red and Ninja Steel, they fixed up his old coin so he can once again be the Red Ninja Morphin Ranger.
Tumblr media
Did you know the Power Blasters could destroy the Megazord and Dragonzord? That’s because before the Zords got upgraded to be Thunder, their Power Weapons were upgraded. Back against the Might Morphin Mutants, when it came to hand to hand they were outmatched. But after they upgraded they one upped them before Rita made them grow. And when Pirantishead took control of them, they threatened to destroy the zords before turning it against Pirantishead.
Tumblr media
Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger (Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger) had an episode known as Delusional Imports. In it, their villain made it so people believed Power Rangers came before Sentai. Got to say it was kind of unflattering, but it was pretty funny. And it does show their passion for the original Sentai that Power Rangers were based on.
Tumblr media
After the Research was done, what showed up in my recommendations was Austin St. John talking about how he got the role of Jason. It is an entertaining story. On that channel, you can also see stories of his first live appearance, being the Gold Ranger, a touching story about Thuy Trang (Trini the Yellow Ranger), and a trailer about his story about Forever Red.
Tumblr media
While we were working on Jason/Leonardo, the Death Battle Curse struck. Outside the announcement of the Power Rangers/TMNT Crossover comic, David Yost (Billy the Blue Ranger) made an appearance for the Toys that Made Us Season 3 for Power Rangers. This is the first Power Rangers related thing I’ve seen him in since leaving Zeo. Though before that he also appeared in Power Rangers Anti Bullying.
Tumblr media
To fill in the Turtles side: my favorite Turtle is Raphael. As a kid it was Mikey but seeing the 4Kids Turtles made me enjoy Ralph. It continued with the 2012 Turtles and I am glad to see Ralph in the leader role in Rise of the TMNT. Sadly, I don’t follow that series and now that its on Nicktoons, the chances of a third seasons are low.
Tumblr media
And I regret not following it SO BADLY because I just found out about Foot Recruit. Its like if Lord Hater and Commander Peepers had a kid. And voiced by Zelda Williams? If she was in episode 1 I would have been following it from the start. Here is the video that made me love her.
Tumblr media
One more Ranger Tidbit: in the comics instead of going to a Peace Conference, the three rangers were chosen by the Morphin Grid to be Omega Rangers. I missed this fight with Lord Zell, but as you can tell there was still plenty for Jason.

hi! Comics rec anon here! to answer your question, I'm not entirely new to comics, have read a few but not enough to say I have a specific type. The first series I read was all the jessica jones comics which I really liked, also the miles morales series which i enjoyed and the spidergwen series which was cute but the art was kinda annoying lol. i also like a couple of dc ones like mister miracle. so i think i prefer a general rec from you since the comics world is so big. thanks in advance!
Got it. Hmm… let’s see. It’s probably easiest to break it down by publisher then. I’ll try to give a mix of ongoing, finished, and “classic” stories.
Fair warning, I read a lot of comics (probably about 60 per month, and that’s not including manga), so even though this may feel like a long list, it’s short for me.
Marvel
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man - Relatively new series, and it’s been fantastic so far. Great art, and a bit more grounded than the Amazing Spider-Man run (which is also great). Stellar art, too.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man - A little YA-ish at times, but overall enjoyable. You get to see a lot more of Miles’ personality in this one, which is always fun.
Superior Spider-Man - Because nothing is more fun than seeing a semi-reformed Otto Octavius try to be a hero.
Captain Marvel - Kelly Thompson does a phenomenal job with this series. She has a great hold of Carol’s voice. Would highly recommend Kelly Sue Deconnick and Margaret Stohl’s previous runs to give context (Captain Marvel 2012-2017, Mighty Captain Marvel, and The Life of Captain Marvel).
Jessica Jones - Not sure if you’ve read Kelly Thompson’s recent run or just Bendis’, but hers is definitely worth a read.
Avengers (2019) - actually a solid run. I would check this out if you’re more into crossover, large-scale storytelling. They’re in the middle of War of the Realms, though… so maybe wait until like August or September?
Immortal Hulk, Daredevil, and X-23 - also good. I read them off and on (not really my fave characters to read on their own, I enjoy them in ensembles), but the stories are solid.
Rogue & Gambit - mini series that I absolutely love by Kelly Thompson (she does great character work) that came out last year. Mr. & Mrs. X is a follow-up to it and also tons of fun (nearing its end as well).
Runaways - I fell off of this when Brian K. Vaughn left, but I can say up through his run ended is well worth the read.
As far as classic stories, Infinity Gauntlet, The Dark Phoenix Saga, X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, Secret Invasion, and Secret Wars would be my first recommendations.
I would’ve recommended Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider, but maybe wait on that. It’s about to end soon and transition to just Ghost Spider (where she leaves Earth-65 and comes to Earth-616 where Peter and Miles are). Same for X-Men. I’m currently reading Uncanny, but X-Men is about to be overhauled soon. So probably hold on that front.
DC/Vertigo
Honestly, not the biggest DC fan (I lean more towards Vertigo actually), but there are a few that I enjoy.
Action Comics (starting at #1000) - I am not a Superman fan, but I enjoy this series, which says a lot. I enjoy what Bendis is doing with him in this run.
Naomi - a new series, also by Bendis, following the story of a young Black girl who is investigating the circumstances around her adoption. Don’t want to give too much away, but probably my fave DC run at the moment. And Jamal Campbell’s art is fucking gorgeous.
Dial H for Hero - it’s fun. It’s weird. Not for everyone, but maybe give it a shot.
The Flash and Batman, New 52 runs - New 52 gets shit from fans a lot, but I thought these runs were awesome. Very good story-telling.
Dark Nights: Metal event - Probably one of the best things DC did in a long time. It’s a massive event that pretty much reworked the DC universe and all the characters. Enjoyed it immensely.
Heroes in Crisis - this miniseries ended very recently. It’s a story focused on a major event that happens at Sanctuary, a rehab for superheroes suffering from mental health issues (e.g. PTSD after doing something that nearly killed them). Not your usual superhero story, which I liked.
American Carnage - very gritty story focused on a white-passing Black man who infiltrates a white supremacist organization. It’s really fucking good.
High Level - I picked this book up randomly because the cover looked cool. I’ve been reading it ever since. I would say it’s weird sci-fi/fantasy/cyberpunk adventure. A little strong on the language, but very interesting story and great artwork.
Birds of Prey - awesome series with the DC women. A little shaky sometimes, but Gail Simone does really good character work. Her run is probably the only one I’d bother reading.
Deathbed - miniseries by Vertigo that ended maybe a year ago. It’s so bizarre and hilarious and out there. I loved it.
Batwoman (J.H. Williams run) and Batwoman: Rebirth - Kate Kane, my favorite lesbian superhero. Williams did a great job in his run (and the art is to die for). Don’t read the back half, they change writers and it’s a goddamn mess. But then Marguerite Bennett (a queer woman) picked it up in Rebirth, and it got awesome again. Also, shout-out to Greg Rucka for officially making her queerness canon in 52.
Wonder Woman - Wonder Woman’s my fave of DC main characters (along with Martian Manhunter and Wally West I & II), and my favorite run for her is Greg Rucka’s. He does a surprisingly good job of writing women. The run is over at the moment, but I’d check it out. Good stuff there.
For classic stories, Kingdom Come, Watchmen, Flashpoint (precursor to New 52), and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman are some of my faves.
Image
Image is probably what I read the most. Definitely has the most diverse pool of comics to choose from.
Saga - My favorite comic series of all-time. I’ve gotten so many people to read this and they love it. It’s weird - really weird, actually - but the storytelling is phenomenal. And it’s on hiatus right now, so plenty of time to get caught up.
Ice Cream Man - This series is so fucking weird, but I love it. It’s sorta like… Tales from the Crypt? Different stories (mostly horror) that all feature this demon ice cream man.
The Weatherman - This series is such a goddamn delight. I don’t want to ruin the plot but just… yeah. Read the first issue and it just goes crazy from there.
Man-Eaters - Sort of a niche story. Basically, this takes place in a society where when women get their cycle, they turn into giant cats and maul men, so they’ve given them pills to keep them from menstruating. Sounds weird? Wait until you read it. Probably a highlight series of the year for me.
Black Science - You might not like the art in this one, but maybe give it a shot? These scientists are trying to solve the problem of limited resources on Earth by hopping across dimensions for new ones (infinite dimensions, infinite resources). Only problem is, their machine got damaged so now they hop uncontrollably to whatever dimension it chooses for however long it decides. It’s a wild ride.
Middlewest - An interesting take on parent/child relationships and how the consequences of abuse, anger, and depression can manifest in dangerous ways. Sounds more bleak than it is - the story actually has quite a bit of humor.
Excellence - Very new series, but with a PoC lead, about PoCs, with mostly PoC creators. A story about a secret society of Black magicians and a son whose next in line to take on the mantle, and it’s pretty fucking cool. Issue 2 comes out this week - check it out!
The Walking Dead - I don’t think I have to explain this one, do I? Zombies.
Lazarus and Lazarus: Risen - Sci-fi story set in a dystopian society where the world is ruled by like 15 or so families, and they each have a Lazarus to fight for them. This is told from the perspective of the Carlyle family’s Lazarus, Forever.
Die - If Dungeons & Dragons and Jumanji had a baby, it would be this book. Sounds weird, but once you read it, you’ll find the description to be accurate.
Anything from Brian K. Vaughn - I have yet to read something from Brian K. Vaughn that I don’t like. Saga, Paper Girls, Y: The Last Man, Runaways, Barrier… his shit’s always good.
Independents / Not Marvel, DC, or Image
Some of these are nostalgia-based, so fair warning.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BOOM Studios) - very new series that’s out. Great art. If you were a fan of the show, I think you’ll like it. It’s a re-imagining of sorts. There’s also an Angel series that just started.
Nancy Drew (Dynamite) - Listen… I could not stand Nancy Drew as a kid. Never got into it and thought it was boring as hell. But I really loved this miniseries (another Kelly Thompson run). It’s maybe 5 issues?
Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and Go Go Power Rangers (BOOM Studios) - Honest to God, if you had told me 3 years ago one of my fave comics would be a Power Rangers one, I would have laughed in your face. Both of these series are really good and provide the continuity, nuance, and characterization the show lacked. Fan of the show or not, I’d say it’s worth checking out if you enjoy the teenage superhero genre. Also, just some really amazing art and world-building.
Anything from Jinxworld - This is Bendis’ own publishing company. He’s put out Cover, Pearl, Scarlet, and United States vs. Murder, Inc. All of them are really good.
Umbrella Academy (Dark Horse) - This is the series the Netflix show is based off of. Right now, they’re doing Hotel Oblivion in the comics, but start with Apocalypse Suite and Dallas.
So, there you go anon. There are FAR more I would recommend, but I tried to give a good range of books for you to choose from without (hopefully) overwhelming you. And if you have any questions, I’m more than happy to talk about any of them.

My Loves in Fiction and Fanfiction
Hey everyone! I think this is the first actual original post that I’ve written on here, everything else is just the wonderful work of many talented others that bring me small joys here and there. It dawned on me that while this is a Zutara tumblr first and foremost, I do have several other pairings mixed in with the bunch. So I figured I lost out my favorite pairings in 24 years of books/tv shows/ movie love:
1) Zuko and Katara:
Obviously they are my OTP, and will always be in endgame in my heart. I could talk days about them, and the works of @theadamantdaughter, @beanaroony, and the rest of the glorious posse of creative masters that have blessed our lives with their works of Zutara, and will in a later post. But they are what brought me to tumblr, and they are the reason I remain. Fire and Water, Earth and Air, Sword and Fan forever.
2. Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Ann Hart
Surprising fact, I love Power Rangers. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers was a favorite of mine when I was little, and the Darker Shade of Green series by UnromanticPoetrss on fanfic.com is one of the most spectacular reimaginings of a series that I’ve ever read, and reinstigated my love for them. I loved the campiness of it all when I was a kid, and the darker AUs and reimaginings in Archive of Our omIwn and fanfiction.com brings it all together. In keeping with Power Ranger couples I also enjoy Wes and Jen from Time Force, Trent and Kira from Dino Thunder, and the Jack/Sky friendship in SPD is wonderful, especially with Sky’s story arc. And Magna Defender just looks badass!
3. Shiro and Princess Allura
Only just finished season 3 of Voltron Legendary Defender, and what can I say I’m hooked on these two. Klance and Piro have my respect and at times my adulation, but Shallura has my love!
4. Bruce Wayne and Princess Diana (Wonder Woman)
Justice League the Animated series is by far the best cartoon adaption of a comic book series ever done. Period. And the thing that holds it together is amazing storytelling and writing, the juxtaposition of Superman and Batman with their developing friendship and differing thoughts on justice, the hints of romance (ugh angst is my shit) between Bruce and Diana, and the real pull and feel of the other characters, ie Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. But Bruce and Diana take the cake for being the best part!
5. Wolverine and Storm/Jean Grey
I enjoy the tension that existed between Logan and Jean in the Fox cartoon and it’s comics, but when I think about character developments, X-Men Schism, and underlying insecurities, I just love Logan and Ororo. His abrasiveness and snark match perfectly with her command and collection, and makes for wonderful interactions. Also Kurt would be the greatest best man ever! Also Logan as a father figure to younger female teammates is one of my favorite parts of his character. His a rough dude, but he loves Laura, Jubilee, and Kitty, and would straight mess up anyone who would think of doing them harm, while also letting them fight their own battles :)
6. Rey and Kylo Ren
I see a lot of redemption arc qualities in this pairing that could be similar to Zutara, really I’m just a sucker for a strong female character who can see past the villainy or flaws in another and bring them to the light, and kick their ass when they act up. It goes both ways, make and female, but I think it’s very powerful. Cliche, yes. Wonderful, yes.
7. Master Chief and Cortana
Halo 4 was amazing because it focused on the relationship between Cortana and Chief and the lengths he’ll go to in order to try and save her, and the sacrifice she makes for him. Their ending scene together in heartbreaking, and though Guardians left a lot to be desired, I do hope they find a way to bridge the human AI gap. Once again a female who can bring emotion, strength, and perspective to a grizzled and war hardened veteran. It’s applicable in my life and that’s why I love it so.
And many others...
Jon Snow and Daenerys
Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister
Eragon and Arya
Piper and the Lone Survivor
Rapunzel and Eugene
Geralt and Yennifer
Bellamy and Clarke
Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy
The list goes on and on, and well touch on all of them in time.
With that, goodnight, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

G, O, P, W, X, Z
G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in itIt might have been Aladdin and Jasmine. Either that, or Tommy and Kimberly from the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. I will ship them until the day I die.
Funny stories about both these ships: when we were 10-11, my bff and I used to play Power Rangers in my basement. Basically we’d run around, pretending to attack putties, but she was always Kimberly and I was always Tommy, and one of us always had to save the other. Also, when we were around the same age, we sang “A Whole New World” as a duet, and performed for our moms.
O - Choose a song at random, which OTP does it remind you ofStop and Stare–nah, just kidding. Too easy.
Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri reminds me of that meme where it’s, like, “who do you think you are, running around leaving scars,” and then the next pic is “Voldemort,” which takes me to Harry Potter, which takes me to my original ship which was, wait for it……Harry/Hermione. Don’t hate me, please, allow me to explain.
I know now that the end game was Harry/Ginny and Hermione/Ron. Don’t get me started on how the movies butchered Ginny’s character (or how bad Bonnie was at playing her…I’M SORRY). But while reading the books, I literally had zero thought that Hermione and Ron would get together. I always felt that Harry and Hermione complemented each other more. And the movies pretty much cemented that. They kept throwing Harry and Hermione together (especially Goblet of Fire), so they were my endgame. There’s still a part of me that will always ship them, and I basically just deal with what’s canon.
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)Well, I’ve been throwing around a Castle Naked and Afraid AU for awhile, actually have a beginning written. It’s nowhere near publishable, and I don’t have any kind of outline or plan other than the end, but it’s an idea I just can’t shake off. (I also have another, fairly NSFW one that I won’t get into)
W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandomsClaire Fraser - OutlanderTahani al Jamil - The Good Place (Jason is a very close second)Leia - Star WarsWonder WomanEvie O’Connell - The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (sorry Maria Bello you’re a great actress but you will never be Evie)
X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandomsEleanor and Chidi - The Good PlaceJamie and Claire - OutlanderHan and Leia - Star Wars (this one breaks my freaking heart but I will ship them forever)
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go goWHY WOULD YOU CANCEL A SHOW ON A CLIFFHANGER (Dark Angel) AND THEN SHIT ON THE SHOW YOU DECIDED TO AIR INSTEAD (Firefly), BY CONSTANTLY CHANGING ITS AIRTIME AND ALSO SHOW THE EPISODES OUT OF ORDER AND THEN CANCEL IT BEFORE SHOWING THEM ALL??? WHY, FOX? WHY?? (sorry, I’m pre-coffee and very tired so once I get a little coffee and wake up I might have something else to ramble about, so I’ll come back to it again in a bit)
Update: I just rambled about Sheila Blaine (Kyra’s mother) here, so, there you go. My Castle rambling of the day.

Power Rangers fans know that the GOAT when it comes to the franchise is Tommy Oliver played by Jason David Frank since Mighty Morphin in 1993. The character had a unique origin story as he started as a villain turned hero. Above all, Tommy Oliver was the definition of  "once a Ranger, always a Ranger."
RELATED: Power Rangers: 10 Most Underrated Team Members
Throughout the franchise, the character has made numerous returns and taken part in different teams. Despite all this, fans can't help but be aware that there were some Rangers who came in a close second to the best of the best. Whether it's for leadership skills, good looks, or martial arts skills, some Rangers almost gave Tommy a run for his money.
10 Tommy: His Redemption Story
Tumblr media
Don't be fooled; over the years, there have been many spectacular redemption stories to marvel at. For example, Magna Defender sought revenge for his son's death and even went against the Rangers to only become their ally. None surpass Tommy Oliver's.
He made his debut early on in Mighty Morphin's first season as the cute new guy with martial arts skills. His skills led Rita Repulsa to kidnap him and brainwash him to become the Green Ranger. With even stronger powers than the Rangers, Tommy became an undefeatable enemy. After the Rangers and Tommy break Rita's spell, Zordon and Alpha transform him into the White Ranger, starting his story as a hero.
9 Merrick (Wild Force)
Tumblr media
Merrick was the sixth Ragner in Wild Force who harnessed the powers of the wolf mask. Taking a look at Merrick's history, he can easily be pitted against Tommy. Three thousand years before Wild Force, unable to defeat Master Org, Merrick ventures to find the wolf mask said to hold immense power.
After defeating Master Org, Merrick is cursed to wear the mask forever and falls under its evil spell. He becomes the evil Zen-Aku and is imprisoned by the other warriors. In the present time, Master Org frees Zen-Aku and uses him against the Rangers. Much like Tommy's story, Merrick has to fight his evil and becomes an ally to the Rangers.
8 Tommy: Longest Reigning Ranger
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that the main reason why Tommy is the best of all time is because of how long he's appeared in the franchise. After Mighty Morphin, Tommy transitioned into becoming the Red Zeo Ranger and the Turbo Ranger for a brief time. At the beginning of the franchise, reusing characters in new installments were normal.
Tommy Oliver took a short hiatus before returning as the Black Dino Ranger and appearing in the epic crossover event Forever Red. Tommy's history as a Ranger is often referred to in different series, and he continued to appear in multi-Ranger crossovers.
7 Wesley (Time Force)
Tumblr media
Wesley was much more than the handsome Red Ranger in Time Force. The reason he gets a spot on the list is because of his immense character evolution throughout the show. Wesley was born into wealth and privilege and forced to follow the life his father wanted. Deep down, Wesley knew it wasn't meant for him.
RELATED: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The 10 Rangers, Ranked From Worst To Best
At first, Wesley came off a bit cocky and sure of himself when meeting the Time Force Rangers. Over time, Wesley grew into his role as a leader and as a hero. Wesley had no issue giving up his pristine life to be with the Rangers. When his father finds out he's a Time Force Ranger, Wesley makes it clear that he finally found what he was meant for and was willing to make sacrifices for it.
6 Tommy: Natural Born Leader
Tumblr media
There have been many Rangers who have proven their worth as leaders, but Tommy stands above everyone else. Since becoming the White Ranger, the team naturally followed his lead on many occasions. Tommy often showcased compassion and understanding when the team was down on their luck.
To top it off, Tommy also knew how to help execute a plan and have his teammates' confidence. It was natural to see Tommy transition from the White Ranger to the Red Ranger in Zeo and Turbo. Even when Rocky became the Red Ranger, Tommy was still dominant, but within reason. In all of his appearances and crossovers, Tommy is always the natural leader.
5 Andros (In Space)
Tumblr media
Andros gets some serious props as a Red Ranger in In Space that could rival Tommy. Andros made it his mission to uncover information about the universe's evil villains on his own. He was a lone wolf, but he openly accepted the Turbo Rangers in their fight to rescue Zordon and stop Astronima.
Besides Andros's skills as a leader, fans applauded his storyline with his sister. After uncovering that Astronima was actually his long-lost sister, he does everything possible to save her. He even refuses to fight her in the last major battle. Andros's big moment of heroism is when he musters the courage to destroy Zordon's energy tank to wipe the world of evil.
4 Tommy: He's Loyal No Matter What & Helpful
Tumblr media
A characteristic of Tommy Oliver that's always appreciated in the franchise is his loyalty to the cause. Tommy isn't one to shy away from a fight against evil, and he's more than willing to become an ally with the Rangers to defeat Rita and continue on his journey as a Ranger for the next installments.
In Forever Red, Tommy is the one who bands together all the other known Red Rangers, even Jason, to fight the machine empire from regaining power. In Dino Thunder, Tommy disappears to only come back with the black Dino Crystal just in time to save the others. He was also willing to sacrifice himself in his fight with Goldar.
3 T.J. (Turbo & In Space)
Tumblr media
T.J. gets a considerably high ranking due to his involvement in the franchise and his transition to In Space. T.J. was first introduced in Turbo after freeing Tommy from prison while fighting Divatox. From the start, T.J. had an inherent desire to help in the face of danger.
RELATED: Power Rangers: 10 Most Powerful Monsters From The Mighty Morphin Series, Ranked
That's not all; it was revealed that T.J. dreamed of becoming a Ranger ever since he was younger. Many can say it was fate as Tommy hand-picked T.J. to become his successor. After the Command Center is destroyed and Divatox manages to defeat the Rangers, T.J. bands together the Rangers to make the venture to space to go after her and try to free Zordon. T.J. realized his duty as Ranger when meeting Andros and joined forces to become the Blue Ranger.
2 Tommy: His Impressive Martial Arts Skills
Tumblr media
All Rangers need good martial arts skills to make it in the franchise—that's rule number one of Power Rangers. When it comes to memorable fighters, fans often recall Tommy. He had impressive moves and combat skills that only got better and better with every appearance.
Between high kicks, punches, and acrobats, Tommy wasn't one to mess with. It's one of the reasons why Tommy is the best of the best, no matter what series he's in. Fans can vividly recall Tommy "Hiya!" whenever he fought.
1 Jason (Mighty Morphin)
Tumblr media
Jason and Tommy were head-to-head in Mighty Morphin when it came to the show's top guy. Besides Tommy Oliver, Jason was the second most remembered Ranger in the franchise. This is because he was the first-ever Red Ranger in the American adaptations. Jason had big shoes to fill, and he didn't disappoint.
He was built, skilled in fighting, and compassionate. He had the makings of a great leader and did well until Tommy took over the mantle. Much like Tommy, Jason gave his comrades words of wisdom when needed and even gave them the push to use their Morphers for the first time.

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
Hey! Alright so one of the main reasons I decided to start writing on Tumblr at least semi-regularly was to translate some of the thoughts in my crazy and sporadic mind to a concrete format. Sometimes the thoughts build up so much and I never express them, whether verbally or written, so it can become overwhelming. While I am an English major with a Bachelor’s degree, I still find myself struggling to formulate thoughts and reasoning that make sense to anyone but myself and I am even worse about committing these thoughts to memory or paper so I am going to use this as not only a writing tool but hopefully as a self-improvement tool as well.
With that being said, I’d like to take this opportunity to express some feelings that I’ve been having lately about one of my favorite passions: video games. YO THEY ARE SUPER GREAT. But maybe also super awful at times.
I’ve had a love affair with video games since I was maybe around four or five years old. My dad was a big video game fan when he was my age and carried on this passion throughout early and middle adulthood. He lived through the Atari era so he was basically on the fuckin’ landing grounds of the creation of my favorite past time. I remember him telling me how great games like Pong and Pac-Man were and how he couldn’t believe how far they advance in terms of graphics and capabilities every time there is a new system release.
The first gaming system I ever had was a Sega Genesis. I have some splendid memories of playing Sonic the Hedgehog, Mutant League Football, Streets of Rage 2 and many more games that I can’t possibly remember all at once. And since I was a young and dumb kid, I even got to experience some of the more obscure titles that most older folks wouldn’t have played at the time. These would especially include licensed movie titles like Power Rangers and Home Alone, among others. While games based on movies often get a bad reputation, I distinctly remember enjoying these two titles particularly because of my ever-growing love of the source material. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie game was a side-scrolling beat ‘em up very similar to Streets of Rage 2 so that is likely why I enjoyed this title so much. And man was it a shit ton of fun playing Home Alone and setting traps for Harry and Marv to fall into.
Okay. Let’s get back on track. So my dad started my love for gaming by sharing his memories and experiences and by purchasing me a Sega Genesis. Blah blah blah. Flash forward to my teenage years. By this time, I was long past my 8 bit and 16 bit gaming days and was into 3D gaming systems that were far advanced from the good ‘ol Atari or Genesis days. I watched in amazement as my dad marveled again at “how good this shit looks” and forever possessing the “what will they do next” philosophy and mindset.
On a related note, I remember the day that we finally got high speed internet in my household. Although we lived in the country and were only able to obtain speeds of 1mbps, it was like luxury living for people who formerly lived with dial-up internet. The reason why this is worth mentioning is because this now opened up a whole new world for me: the world of online gaming. Boy, did I not have a clue how great and equally terrifying this would be for me.
As I became older, I became at least slightly more skilled at playing games than when I was younger. However, I could not understand why the people who played games online against me in multiplayer modes were so much better. I struggled with this a lot and, admittedly, it’s a personal problem that I still have. I’m not sure if I have a competitive complex that I don’t like to reason with or if it’s something else but goddamn do I have some gaming-related anger and self-esteem issues. You would’ve likely heard me yelling in frustration in these angst-driven years, screaming phrases such as OH MY GOD THIS GUY HAS KILLED ME TEN TIMES IN A ROW AND I HAVEN’T EVEN LEFT MY RESPAWN AREA. WHY AM I SO BAD AT THIS? WHY IS HE CROUCHING UP AND DOWN ABOVE MY CHARACTER’S DEAD BODY?!?!
There is a point I’m going to make. God I’m bad at this. SEE THERE IT IS AGAIN.
My parents, especially my dad, became very angry that I was angry over a video game. The hobby that he once loved so much had mostly become a thing of the past (besides occasional sports games) so he couldn’t possibly understand why a simple hobby was making me so angry. I tried reasoning with him, stating the idea that he was likely angry when he lost to the AI on his older games. He told me he never remembered getting angry because “it was just a game” and “it’s just a computer” and that he never reacted in such a strong way.
Then, it clicked.
The reason why I get so angry about playing games online is because I am personally interacting with real human beings and not just a computer, not just a form of artificial intelligence. A real, living, breathing, swearing, mother insulting person. And people. SO MANY PEOPLE ALL ONLINE AT ONCE. And these real people don’t give a single fuck about my feelings or how bad I am at the game. Their mission is to make their player beat or destroy or kill my player. It’s truly just a game and shouldn’t hold such a great weight on anyone’s mind but online gaming has a way of making it feel personal and I think that’s why it still has the ability to fill me with such a completely unjustifiable rage.
This brings us to present day. While I still play games online quite often, I feel that my experiences and feelings have changed. I am no longer a child or even a teenager. I am a twenty-five year old man with two part-time jobs, a fiancee, a cat, an apartment to clean and maintain and bills to pay. SO WHY THE HELL AM I STILL GETTING MAD OVER VIDEO GAMES?
I think that we, as an obviously imperfect species of living biology, are always striving for better. I have clearly evolved and matured as person but there is still that part of me that wants to break shit and throw things when I lose. Maybe I’m just a sore loser. I probably am. BUT. There is so much shit wrong with this world, especially in 2017, that we tend to expect to gain happiness and success out of the hobbies, interests and activities that we spend our free time on while the rest of our time is spent working or sleeping. I’m not sure if this is true for everyone but I think it’s true for me. I think that everything in my life is so uncertain, so messy, so complicated and so challenging for me that I expect my hobbies to provide me an escape from reality and responsibility and send waves of happiness to my screwed up brain.
Speaking of happiness, I want to mention one of the main reasons why I was prompted to write this very long post. Well, maybe not long by Tumblr standards but surely by my own!
I have recently been playing a game called Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. It’s a PC game I’ve been playing with my friend Ben on Steam. The elevator pitch for this game is imagine you’ve been put into a Hunger Games style world where you are dropped on an island and must fight to the death with all the other inhabitants. It is simply amazing to realize that there are up to one hundred people in any given match of this game and it could be one hundred different people that you are fighting every time. One hundred different characters that represent one hundred real people, just like you and me. Except maybe not as nice. This game is super stressful, intimidating and difficult at times but HOLY SHIT it is fun. I can honestly say it is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a video game. The constant desire to finally get that win, or “chicken dinner” as the game refers to it, is the pure carnal force that is driving me to keep playing. I keep telling myself the frustration will pay off and I will eventually win.
Well, long story short, I have played countless matches of this game with Ben and I had never won a game of it until last night. We have made it into the top ten out of fifty teams on several occasions and have put over fifteen hours into this game so far but had never won up until this point. I won’t describe this play-by-play but here’s the general gist of it: my friend Ben died early in this match so I was left alone to proceed through the rest of the match. At first, I was completely unsure of how I could possibly proceed without him but then the number of players left in the game started sinking lower and lower until I was finally in the last ten remaining. And then eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. There were three players left, including myself. I had not landed many accurate shots in this match thus far and was almost sure that I would blow this. At last, I fired my virtual assault rifle and eliminated the last player. A screen popped up that said, “WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!” and gave me some match statistics. I was in a state of shock as Ben yelled in excitement and couldn’t believe it. After hours of trial and error, I had finally won.
I know this post may sound completely trivial and unimportant to anyone but me. The truth is that video games mean a lot to me and being good at them means more than I wish it did. But I think that video games aren’t nearly as irrelevant or pointless as some people make them out to be. Personally, this was a learning experience for me that I needed to have long before adulthood. Sometimes, trial and error is the only method that leads to success. But if you don’t try in the first place, you can’t even reach the point of error. I worked past my fear of being bad at video games and the judgment that would follow by the other players and I accomplished a goal.
Simply put, I expect too much from video games. They have given me fun and happiness for years but how dare they not do this 100 percent of the time or else it will inevitably lead to me being pissed off and destructive.
So thank you, video games. You non-living, virtual, amazing, bullshit, absolutely wonderful creation.
