Minnie May Barry being awesome. My absolutely favourite character of "Anne With An E" series.
Also, she is EXACTLY what I imagine Ilse Burnley Miller's daughter might have been like.

Paul Irving and Green Gables twins:
"I hope Davy won’t be there when I go because he makes faces at me. I don’t mind very much because he is such a little boy and I am quite a big one, but still it is not pleasant to have faces made at you. And Davy makes such terrible ones. Sometimes I am frightened he will never get his face straightened out again. He makes them at me in church when I ought to be thinking of sacred things. Dora likes me though, and I like her, but not so well as I did before she told Minnie May Barry that she meant to marry me when I grew up. I may marry somebody when I grow up but I’m far too young to be thinking of it yet, don’t you think, teacher?”
Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery
Awww, Dora being friends with Diana's little sister! Dora having a crush on Paul! That's too cute!

AWAE Rewrite // 01x02 // I am no bird and no net ensnares me
Tumblr media
Description : It’s the church picnic in Avonlea, meanwhile it’s your first day of school and lets just say that you catch the eye of a certain person...
Pairings : mild Billy Andrews x Reader, Gilbert Blythe x Reader,
Warnings : jealousy, mention of dibs on a girl, tad bullying, if there’s anything else that needs to be added, let me know.
“Darling you need to look perfect for the church picnic Sunday,” said your mother as she was tending to your half curled hair
“Mother why can’t I wear my hair down for once?” You asked, the pain from the ribbons on your head was intolerable
“Honey beauty is pain, you just always look your best everywhere we go,” scolded your mother “now I’m almost done with the measurements just, stay still,”
You rolled your eyes s as you looked outside, when you did you saw Anne and Diana playing
“Mother, why can’t I play with Anne?” You asked “she seems like a nice girl,”
“She’s an orphan that’s why,” said your mother “and young ladies don’t hang out with orphans,”
——
“So... do you have a date to the church picnic?”
You were walking beside Billy Andrews on the way to school. You who didn’t like the boy had to refuse
“Because my parents were thinking about asking your family if they would like to accompany us,” said Billy, trying his every ounce to impress you. You turned around
“Billy, please be quiet for a moment,” you said before walking off, the nerve of that boy
——
“Isn’t Gilbert sooo handsome,” gushed Ruby as she laid a hand under her chin
“He’s alright I guess,” said Josie “the only boy that’s eye catching is Billy,”
“Well you can have him,” you said as your picking at your bread that your mother has packed for you “anything to keep him away from me,”
“what wrong with Billy?” asked Josie “I think he’s very handsome.”
“Josie, if Y/N doesn’t like my brother, then it’s fine.” said Jane “Besides I heard that the new girl is joining us in two weeks for school.”
‘Really? well we must make her feel welcomed.” you said as you smiled
“Please, why would you want to hang out with an orphan? I heard that orphans have asylum cooties.” said Josie
“Josie!” said Diana “Anne may be an orphan, but she has a family now, we all should be happy for her.”
“Yeah Josie, Have some sympathy.” you said as you took a bite of your bread
-----
“I rushed here as fast I could.”
Currently you were at the Cuthbert's house. After the disappearance of Anne, you forced your parents and siblings to help keep Marilla under control, of course your mother wasn’t thrilled.
“Ms Cuthbert, I hate to be rude but we must be going, we’ll be back tomorrow.” at that your mother turned around
“well if you’re leaving, I'm staying.”
“Y/N you will not do a such thing.”
“Yeah but look at Ms Cuthbert.” you said as you pointed to her “She is in the depths of despair and you want to leave?”
“The kids got a point.” said Mrs Lynde who was also at the Cuthbert house
“My child will not be fraternizing with an orphan, now be a lady and follow me Y/N.”
“No I will not follow you!” you said “I’m staying here till Anne gets back, Mother, Anne is my friend, I can’t abandoned her in a time like this.”
“Fine but your finding you own way back home.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll bring her back home.” smiled Mrs Lynde
-----
“Thank goodness your ok!” you said as you ran up to Anne giving her a hug “We were worried sick about you, they didn’t hurt you did they?”
“No they didn’t.” said Anne
You gave Anne a big hug before releasing
“I better get home before Mother has a cow.”
-----
“Yes, my daughter is quite they beautiful child isn’t she?” gushed your mother, it was the day of the church Picnic and you were standing next to your mother wearing a Baby Pink dress with white lace coming off the sleeves.
“She is indeed, any man would be lucky to have her.” said Eliza Barry as she was talking with your mother
“I don’t like this cookie.” said the youngest Barry Minnie May
“Well then don’t eat it.” said Eliza
“There’s Anne, lets go say hi Y/N.” said Diana as she grabbed your hand pulling you with her but you were stopped by Eliza Barry
“Girls not today.”
“I heard that she was attending school with us.” said the youngest Andrew Jane
“Oh my what awful red hair she’s got.” said The oldest Andrew Prissy as she looked at her sister
“It awful that she doesn’t have a family.”
After hearing all these nasty words, you saw Anne break down into tears before she ran off, with Marilla following behind her
----
“I’m sorry for what happened at the picnic.” You said as you talked with Anne on the other side of the fence at Green Gables
“It fine I just wish they would’ve kept it to themselves.”
“Anne i’m here if you need anything.” you said “I promise.”
“Thanks Y/N, you really are a kindred spirit.”

Anne and Diana
Tumblr media
The Urban Diction describes the term kindred spirits as: two people that make a special connection by sharing a bond that has joined them by the means of an experience that has drawn them together on a higher level of consciousness. We often spend our lives searching for that special someone who understands us and whose devotion will stand the test of time. Prior to her life in Avonlea and at Green Gables, spunky red-headed Anne Shirley longed for a kindred spirit/bosom friend. For years she made do with “mirror friends” and her own imagination to cope with her unhappy situations. Then when she was sent to Avonlea, and she was adopted by the Cuthbert siblings, she found her first kindred spirit in Matthew. The second kindred spirit she found was Diana Barry.
Tumblr media
A girl near her own age, of more traditional inclinations, Anne was ecstatic to meet Diana. Anne had to work hard to earn some of the Avonlea locals’ trust. After criticizing her hair and freckles, local gossip Rachel Lynde encounters the girl’s fiery temper and Anne must offer up a theatrical apology. At one point, Marilla suspects Anne of stealing and losing her special brooch. When he teases her and calls her carrots, Gilbert Blythe more or less had to have sense knocked into him via a school slate. However, from their initial meeting, Diana offered Anne friendship and showed her kindness others had not shown her before.
Tumblr media
For the first time, Anne is allowed to be a kid and she blossoms. For the first time, Diana embraces her own imagination and creativity. Together they grow into young ladies, they attend parties and dances, and have girlish adventures. They indulge in romantic fantasies, write stories, read poetry and novels. It is all very idyllic, but not without a few woes. As with every friendship, it is tested.
Tumblr media
One day when Marilla is away, Anne invites Diana over for an afternoon, and mimicking the ladies of Avonlea she serves her friend cake and cherry cordial. Or so she believes. In reality, the cherry cordial is a bottle of Marilla’s currant wine. Diana is soon intoxicated and when Mrs. Barry discovers this latest scrape, she forbids Anne from seeing her bosom friend/kindred spirit. The girls meet in secret, for a last farewell, and pledge their love to one another. When Minnie May Barry falls dangerously ill with croup, Diana comes to Green Gables for help. Matthew goes for the doctor, but knowing it is hazardous to wait too long, Anne takes matters in her own hands. Armed with ipecac, Anne and Diana go to the Barry’s and Anne works tirelessly at nursing Minnie May back to health. Anne is redeemed in Mrs. Barry’s eyes and with her blessing, she and Diana resumed their friendship once more.
Tumblr media
Anne and Diana’s friendship continued into their adult years; however, for a while they took different paths. Anne chose to advance her education and she had a teaching career, writing and publishing occasionally. Diana doesn’t attend college and decides to accept a proposal from Fred Wright, to settle down and have a family. After chasing her for years, Gilbert Blythe wins Anne Shirley’s romantic heart and they marry and have a family of their own.
Tumblr media
Their love and devotion enduring, eventually Anne and Diana had daughters…daughters which they name after each other. If that is not proof that they were kindred spirits, I don’t know what is. It offers hope to the rest of us that someday we will each find a kindred spirit of our own.

Minnie May, aged three, was really very sick. She lay on the kitchen sofa feverish and restless, while her hoarse breathing could be heard all over the house. Young Mary Joe, a buxom, broad-faced French girl from the creek, whom Mrs. Barry had engaged to stay with the children during her absence, was helpless and bewildered, quite incapable of thinking what to do, or doing it if she thought of it.
Anne went to work with skill and promptness.
“Minnie May has croup all right; she’s pretty bad, but I’ve seen them worse. First we must have lots of hot water. I declare, Diana, there isn’t more than a cupful in the kettle! There, I’ve filled it up, and, Mary Joe, you may put some wood in the stove. I don’t want to hurt your feelings but it seems to me you might have thought of this before if you’d any imagination. Now, I’ll undress Minnie May and put her to bed and you try to find some soft flannel cloths, Diana. I’m going to give her a dose of ipecac first of all.”
It was three o’clock when Matthew came with a doctor, for he had been obliged to go all the way to Spencervale for one. But the pressing need for assistance was past. Minnie May was much better and was sleeping soundly
“I was awfully near giving up in despair,” explained Anne. “She got worse and worse until she was sicker than ever the Hammond twins were, even the last pair. I actually thought she was going to choke to death. I gave her every drop of ipecac in that bottle and when the last dose went down I said to myself—not to Diana or Young Mary Joe, because I didn’t want to worry them any more than they were worried, but I had to say it to myself just to relieve my feelings—’This is the last lingering hope and I fear, tis a vain one.’ But in about three minutes she coughed up the phlegm and began to get better right away. You must just imagine my relief, doctor, because I can’t express it in words. You know there are some things that cannot be expressed in words.”
“ Yes, I know,” nodded the doctor. He looked at Anne as if he were thinking some things about her that couldn’t be expressed in words. Later on, however, he expressed them to Mr. and Mrs. Barry.
“That little redheaded girl they have over at Cuthbert’s is as smart as they make ‘em. I tell you she saved that baby’s life, for it would have been too late by the time I got there. She seems to have a skill and presence of mind perfectly wonderful in a child of her age. I never saw anything like the eyes of her when she was explaining the case to me.” Lucy Maud Montgomery quotes-Anne Of Green Gables.

AWAE 12 Days of Christmas - Day Three
(All 12 posts will be missing scenes come from my Anne with an E Hogwarts AU fic.)
Anne learns about Ravenclaw’s Diadem. Naturally, this calls from a quest.
(Barry House - second year)
“Diana,” Ruby asked, staring out the windows into the Barry’s garden. “What is your sister doing?”
Diana and Anne looked up from the pie crust. Minnie May was holding a stone up to the sky, dramatically orating.
“I HAVE CONQUERED DEATH!”
“Oh, she’s just going through a phase,” Diana shrugged. “I’ve been reading the Tale of the Three Brothers to her - she’s obsessed with the resurrection stone.”
“What’s a resurrection stone?” Anne said, curiosity peaked. “I’ve never heard of one.”
“It’s not real, Anne,” Diana said. “The resurrection stone, the elder wand - these are just legends, like the Philosopher's stone or the diadem of Ravenclaw.”
The rolling pin went clattering to the floor.
“Ravenclaws had a diadem?!”
*
“But Marilla, surely you must know something. You’re a head of house!” Anne pleaded.
“Yes, of Hufflepuff!” Marilla said. “I never had much reason to think about some lost crown of Ravenclaw.”
“It’s called a diadem, Marilla, so much more romantic-”
“And even if I were head of Ravenclaw,” Marilla continued firmly. “I would have much more important things to do than worry about a long lost diadem that is probably not even real.”
Anne stilled, her eyes narrowing. “You said it probably isn’t real.”
“Anne-”
“As in it might be real.”
“Anne, for Boleyn’s sake-”
“I’m going to find it,” Anne decided.
“Anne no - Anne get back here!”
*
(Library, third year)
“So according to Rowena’ Ravenclaw’s biography, Rowena Ravenclaw denied the diadem being stolen but it was never seen at least a decade before her death-”
“I don’t care Anne.”
“During which Ravenclaw resided at Hogwarts as a teacher. She rarely left the grounds, even for her ancestral home. Which means-”
“Anne, please, we’re trying to work-”
“The diadem is mostly likely here at Hogwarts!”
“Anne - wait what?” Jerry looked up from his herbology textbook. “I thought it didn’t exist?”
“Just because something is lost doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!” Anne said excitedly.
“No, but it makes it far less likely to,” Cole pointed out. “I don’t understand why you’re so obsessed with the diadem anyway.”
“It’s said to increase the wisdom of anyone who wears it,” Anne said. “Besides, it’s the mystery of it all! A lost relic, as valuable as any treasure, hidden away in the folds of time, somewhere in a magical castle...it’s positively thrilling!”
“Do you really think you can find it?” Jerry asked, shoving the herbology text aside. “I mean, other people must have looked.”
“Diana said people searched for centuries after she died, but none of them ever got close. According to legend, Ravenclaw’s own final letter to Helga Hufflepuff supposedly held a clue, but it was never deciphered.”
“Anne,” Cole said. “You know I know you’re brilliant. But if centuries of witches and wizards couldn’t supposedly break this code and find the diadem, what makes you think you can?”
“Simple,” Anne said. “They were all thinking like wizards. But Rowena Ravenclaw was a half-blood. I think the key to all this is to approach it like a muggle.
“I’m in,” Jerry announced. “What?” Jerry asked when Cole shook his head. “I’m bored. And I love beating purebloods at their own game.”
*
(Courtyard, 4th year)
“Go over it again,” Diana said. “We’re missing something obvious, I can feel it.”
“Indeed I have found, my dearest Helga, that the mantle of time hangs heavily around me, our own lights dimming as our students flare ever more brightly. Perhaps Godric was right, and our own age is coming to a close. All we can hope is that the legacy we have planted here blooms as a more prosperous, safer age for our people . Already wisdom lies with the seed.” Anne tapped the book. “After that it turns to discussion of Helga’s birthday. I suppose the code could be in that section.”
“Let’s go one paragraph at a time,” Diana said. “That way we can keep track of what we know.”
Half an hour later, they were still stuck.
“Are you sure it isn’t a revealing charm?”
“Witches and wizards would have already tried that,” Anne sighed, closing the book. She gazed at the cover. Correspondence of the Hogwarts Founders. The cover was illustrated with a portrait of the four founders together. Anne traced Rowena’s face with her thumb. She looked oddly familiar; Anne could have sworn she had seen her before. She just couldn’t remember where. It was infuriating.
“What are your secrets?” Anne whispered.
“Well, we learned one thing. Rowena Ravenclaw really liked metaphors,” Jerry said. “Fire, planting, seeds...she is a flowery as you Anne.”
“Flowers...seeds....Jerry you’re a genius!” Anne declared.
*
(Corridor, 5th year)
“Cole,” Anne appeared out of nowhere, grabbing his arm. “You’ll never believe it. We think we found it!”
“And by it you mean...” Cole raised an eyebrow.
“The diadem!”
“You’re still on about that?” Cole asked. “I thought you gave up years ago.”
“Never,” Anne shook her head. “Come on, Diana and Jerry are meeting us by the old greenhouses. We’re about to make history!” She set off down the corridor, dragging Cole with her.
“I already have a bad feeling about this.”
(Marilla’s office, 5th year Later that evening.)
“My bad feeling was totally correct, by the way,” Cole muttered to no one in particular. No one answered. Jerry, Anne and Diana were far more focused on the irate pacing form of Marilla.
“You could have burned the entire structure down Anne, honestly what were you thinking...”
“I’m sorry Marilla, truly I am, but we had found Rowena’s old letters and-”
“Of course,” Marilla’s nostrils flared. “I should have known. This is about that diadem isn’t it?”
Anne nodded sheepishly.
“And she dragged you three into this?” Marilla demanded of the rest of the group.
“Literally,” Cole said. He felt no qualms about throwing the rest of them into the dragon’s path for this. He had just been trying to walk to dinner.
Diana and Jerry just shrugged. “We volunteered.”
“Merlin almighty,” Marilla closed her eyes briefly.

I love I love I love
Josephine Barry:
Emotion is rarely convenient and often intolerable, but I find, at the moment, that I don't mind it.
 Anne Shirley :
                                   I'm sorry. Grief is confusing.
 Josephine Barry :
Grief is the price you pay for love, you see. So it's all right.
                                       [last lines]
Anne Shirley :
I aspire to utilize my intellect fully and never succumb to frivolities such as romance.
Josephine Barry:
Then you wouldn't be much like me at all.
 Anne Shirley:
But you and I are not the marrying kind.
Josephine Barry:
Ah, but I was, in my way. And we had a full and wonderful life together. I have no regrets. That's all you really have to decide, Anne, to live a life with no regrets.
Anne Shirley:
"It is weak and silly to say you cannot bear what it is your fate to be required to bear."
Josephine Barry:
                                   I beg your pardon?
Anne Shirley:
Jane Eyre. Don't you just love it?
Josephine Barry :
Ah. I've yet to reach that bit.
Anne Shirley:
                                   Chapter six, I believe.
Ruby Gillis:
If the key to a man's heart is through his stomach, which it is, then we have to make sure that this is the best shepherd's pie that Gilbert has ever tasted.
Anne Shirley:
Being a good cook shouldn't be very high on the list of romantic attributes, if you ask me.
