i cannot stand the fact adap Chishiya is a Hearts player, sowz. it's clear to me the adap writers completely misunderstood what makes someone a Hearts player in the first place and ran with it.

Chishiya can read others emotions to some extent, sure, but not in-depth enough to sympathize.

you wanna know why Chishiya (and Niragi) are Diamonds players? because they don't care enough to truly understand the hearts of others. they manipulate situations, not (usually) out of desperation, but because it's all they know. they lack a genuine understanding with others.

(adap) Arisu being a Diamonds player also completely misses the point: Arisu is so similar to Chishiya and Niragi that if, at any point prior to the Borderlands, he had one more thing go wrong, he could've ended up like the two of them; but he didn't because he refused to be like that.

Arisu is a Hearts player because he's both smarter than he gives himself credit for, and emotionally mature enough to take to heart (wink wink) the emotions of others and actively put himself in their shoes to get through a game.

that last reason is why Matsushita Enji is such a lousey Hearts player, because, like Chishiya and Niragi, he isn't emotionally mature enough to truly be good at Hearts. he has great setups, sure, but he's too proud to acknowledge other players and their inteligence, which is why he was ultimately defeated by Yaba and Banda.

Yaba and Banda both come from backgrounds where they need to read others to some extent: Yaba, a CEO who climbed the corporate ladder by reading others and using those emotions to his advantage (as we saw happen with Arisu when he was confronted by the militants), and Banda, a misogynistic murderer who got into the houses of women he killed, needed to be agile enough to get them to trust him by manipulating the situation in his favor, all while keeping in mind the emotions of those he killed.

Hearts games are not won by sheer manipulation, as we saw with Enji and Urumi; there needs to be a level of connection with others if you want to survive, which is also why Mitsurugi's defeat was so upsetting; ideally, he did everything right, but ultimately was a bit too confident in his plan and thus, refused to acknowledge the power the other players had. he was too good of a person.

Mira is a bit of an outlier, not because she was bad at the games or anything, but because she's the perfect mix of both understanding and master manipulator; if she went up against any other player in the Borderlands, they would easily lose. Arisu almost lost too, but as we've established, Hearts games are built off connections with others and Usagi was needed in order to make it.

I'm sure Mira was well-aware of that fact, especially with Arisu, but her ulimate failure was the same as Mitsurugi's: she ended up downplaying the connection between him and Usagi. Hearts games need love, level-headedness, mild manipulation, and an open mind if you intend to win.

going back to my main point, that's why Chishiya either avoids Hearts games all together, manipulates people during them, or turns to violence; he lacks the emotional maturity and agency to clear one the way they are meant to be cleared, why Arisu is a much better Hearts player than Chishiya will ever be, and why the adap writers completely misunderstood that point.

Defeating One Piece?

it was a random day. initially I planned to go to Tebet attending a discussion class of one community I have joined for the last few months once leaving my office mate’s wedding in Tanjung Priok. in fact the wedding place (we can say it’s kind of an uptown area) is not as near as I thought, so that once I got my watch shows 1 pm and I (actually with some friends and a cute baby Marsha) was still trapped in a traffic jam around Kelapa Gading thought desperately that I couldn’t make it for sure. thus later I found myself swallowing Bubur Ayam Cikini with two spontaneous-boy companions (wkwk) and ended up with talking about One Piece while enjoying a cup of tea at a coffee shop nearby (I was completely sleepy and didn’t want to interrupt it with coffee haha).

wait, One Piece? since then do I like this cartoon?

yes, One Piece. and the answer is… since then, haha.

well, I cannot say that I already like this cartoon, but I admit that I start to be interested in its story (might be) since my friend said that its author is the smartest manga author (named Eiichiro Oda) and seems know the world history which is not known by most people. he therefore pour it into pirate stories that eventually becomes his masterpiece with very large fans all over the world. however I don’t think the Japanese pirate story will defeat the samurai or ronin story--I’ve been interested in earlier—and win my heart wkwk.

let’s say Rurouni Kenshin, a ronin story I’ve known since junior high school, with its beautiful cartoon pictures, and even makes me once a swordsman wannabe, haha. even though I don’t follow its manga or anime intensively, I have deep interest to know its whole story. that’s why when they decided to make its live action movie, it was such very good news to me. thankfully—well, apart from its mellow romantic story—it’s not disappointing, especially the samurai hustle of the center character, Himura Kenshin (played by the cute-agile actor Takeru Satoh). I’d like to say that the three of its movies are my favorites so far. besides its legendary story, I really fall for its incredible choreography (and honestly inspire me, once again, to learn iaijutsu and be a swordsman, haha). I also would like to say that Himura Kenshin is the coolest manga character I’ve ever met. he is remarkable for his long-thick-abundant-ponytailed hair; the X-mark; his sakabato (reversed-edge sword); the inherited Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu; and his white hakama. I love the part of his transformation from Hittokiri Battosai to be his better version of human-being as rurouni or wanderer who’s amicable, caring, and youthful. it taught me such a lesson that no matter how bad you were in the past, you could find the better version of you as long as you make a journey and seek for it.

well, my interest in Japanese swordsman story doesn’t stop here. one of my favorite novels is Young Samurai written by Chris Bradford. it tells about Jack Fletcher, an English boy who convert to be a samurai once he stepped Japanese land. it’s not to mention my favorite samurai movies The Last Samurai and 47 Ronin, and my another favorite book Tales of the Ronin by Travis Heermann. next time I will complete it by reading the legendary stories of Musashi and Taiko by Eiji Yoshikawa.

ahah, I think we should back to the main topic.

I realise that I’ve been influenced by them (fuh) and I started to read One Piece manga in the following days, from first chapter (yes, FIRST) and I’ll let you know that today it’s already chapter 800-something, makes me do not sure whether I’ll be able to survive wkwk. though I must agree that it entertains me a lot since almost all of the characters (at least they who exist in the chapters I’ve read) are so much fun and very good at making me laugh, especially its main character the rubber-boy Monkey D. Luffy who has a big dream to be ‘A King of Pirate!’ with his kind-dauntless-optimist-but silly character. I also already found an attractive character here, his name is Roronoa Zoro, a first crew of Luffy’s fleet. I choose him since he is a swordsman who is very good at fighting and has a dream to be ‘The Great Swordsman in The World!’ yeah, a swordsman, but I need to say that he is not as cool as Kenshin for sure, haha.

I don’t know how it settles eventually— I mean my journey following Luffy’s journey finding One Piece, haha. I still enjoy it by far, but I read it fewer than I did at first time since I’m trying to make sure that it wouldn’t replace my habit of reading books wkwk.

Arisu: no. he took an English class for a trimester and dropped out almost immediately.

Karube: kind of. he can speak some Spanish bc his grandma is Mexican and he visited her while growing up.

Chota: no. same reason as Arisu.

Shibuki: no. same reason as Arisu and Chota.

Usagi: no. she's thought about learning Spanish though.

Chishiya: yes. fluent in both Japanese and French, dabbled in Italian, (Spaniard) Spanish, and English, but never got around to actually learning them.

Niragi: no. he can understand general Latin though.

Kuina: no. if someone was willing to teach her English she'd happily learn it.

Aguni: yes. Japanese and (Latin) Spanish.

Ann: yes. Japanese, Chinese, and Hmong.

Mahiru: yes. English, Tagalog, and Japanese. some Chinese, too.

Hatter: no. he knows a few words in almost every major language but will never commit to actually learning them.

Mira: surprisingly no. she hasnt had any reason to.

Kuzuryū: yes. (canonically) English, Japanese, and (non canonically) Mandrin.

Kyuuma: kind of. in the process of learning English. probably learned some from his bf (Kuzuryū)

Shiirabi: yes.

Enji: no. he dgaf

Heiya: no. she knows a few slang words in English and that's about it.

Doudou: no. for the same reason as Arisu, Chota, and Shibuki.

Mitsurugi: yes. English and Japanese.

Urumi: yes. Mandrin and Japanese.

Kariya: no.

Ippei: no. see Arisu, Chota, Doudou, and Shibuki.
