A Third South Bend Affordable Housing Project Wins State Financing

The State of Indiana is pleased to announce that former Notre Dame basketball star Devereaux Peters will receive financial assistance in order to develop a third low-income housing project within the South Bend area. This initiative marks an important milestone for costs and construction, proving that affordable living can be both accessible and attainable. Peters' organization, Chateaux 14 Development, aims to construct The Monreaux apartments at Michigan and Monroe Streets in downtown South Bend. The four-story building at 505 S. Michigan St., where the former Fat Daddy's surplus store used to be, will offer rent prices below market rates for nearly half its sixty units. To increase her chances of being selected as the developer of this property, Ms. Peters included in her proposal amenities that would favorably benefit small businesses and budding entrepreneurs - a move which evidently paid off since state officials chose her! To construct The Monreaux, Peters estimates it will cost a whopping $16.9 million. Fortunately, the South Bend Common Council extended aid with a proposal last year to reduce his tax burden by $432K and invest an extra $1.5M into modernizing the street infrastructure surrounding complex area. "I feel that my time in South Bend is really what helped me develop into a woman, through the relationships I built, the people that I met," Peters told The Tribune in July, mentioning South Bend native and Notre Dame teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith as well as Muffet McGraw, her Hall of Fame head coach, and Niele Ivey, who was Peters' assistant coach and now leads the Fighting Irish women's basketball program. Peters revealed that due to failing to secure funding in the initial round, her construction timeline has been pushed back by a full year. She anticipates work on the project will commence during spring 2024 and be completed no later than December of 2025. On Thursday, she called the project "the biggest accomplishment of my entire life." Peters, now 33, was the third overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft and played basketball professionally for years before retiring in 2019. Transforming from a competitive athlete to an up-and-coming software developer has been a difficult and uncertain journey, she revealed to The Tribune on Thursday. Basketball had become an innate ability for her, and she was a specialist. Therefore, making the switch to a different field that demanded her to address strange issues which were not as simple to solve by relying on muscle memory became very disconcerting. "When you transition in to a different field, a different career, you're starting all over again," Peters said during a phone call. "It's hard going from one end of the spectrum to the other. "Finally being able to get to the point where I can complete a project is just really rewarding.”
