There's been another mass shooting - this time, at the Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park. This happened Saturday night in the midst of a thriving Asian American community that was trying to celebrate the turn of the new year.
Lunar New Year for many of us is a time of gathering, of celebration, and of prosperity. But this - this casts a shadow over our celebrations. Over the new year. Over our communities.
Ten are dead. More are wounded. And instead of being offered compassion, our community is being told, over and over: "The suspect was Asian." We know that. Why haven't you come forward with any empathy at all? Why are you snarking about this and smug that the suspect wasn't white? Because you "owned the libs?" Do you think, perhaps, internalized racism doesn't exist?
I'm tired. We've said it before: end gun violence now. Stop Asian Hate.
"There was a moment yesterday when I broke down at work. I sobbed, grieving because of the trauma that Asians and Pacific Islanders in America have absorbed and tucked away these past three years, the way so many daily walks have become heavier. The way stories of violence have layered upon others until it’s difficult for me to recall which individual in which city in which way. I thought of how quickly I have normalized the grotesque—standing in front of the subway beams when a train arrives so that I have something to grab onto if pushed; casually ignoring men who roll their eyes up and down my body and call me “China girl.” Too many marginalized people feel this: the notion that violence is the foundation of the home that we fearfully inhabit."
my heart is shattered with the community of Monterey Park and the Asian American community in the wake of such death and violence at Star Dance whose news broke today, my prayers with the families of those taken from us and with those battling to recover from their injuries.

They have no information. The shooter is still at large, so please tell everyone you know in the LA area to...... well, nothing. I guess there's nothing you can do to be safe and nowhere you can go to be safe, so just good luck 😔
Only country with dozens of mass shootings a year, but apparently, it's unstoppable. There is no way forward to even reduce gun violence at all. That's what gun enthusiasts say. That's the logic we're supposed to accept: nothing can stop it or reduce it, so there's no point in trying. Again, only happens here. But yeah....

Morning headlines of mourning.
A night of violence and loss.
A dawn that brings no comfort.
Our national map of tragedy has a new place in which we stick a pin of pain.
We see once more what happens when instruments of mass death are untethered from any semblance of logical restrictions.
As always, there are new names to learn of people who will never hear their…
