UNNECESSARY AND UNHINGED RANT ABOUT CINDERELLA'S CHARACTER FROM CINDERELLA (2015) INCOMING
Lemme talk about Cinderella from Cinderella (2015) for a bit actually yeah because these changes to my girl completely baffle me
Tumblr media
She has friends now
Goes outside on her own
Says the only reason why she's staying is because it's her parent's house- bruh.
All of this takes away (+ more reasons down the cut) from the true cruelty of OG!Cinderella's backstory and how it all connects so well to inform you of her character and the actions she takes
OG!Cinderella has been indoctrinated into accepting her life as a maid to her step family since she was a small child. She is never seen going outside of the house besides the night at the ball. The only friends she had were random animals around her she couldn't even fully converse with. She had no other human perspective on her situation or how to get out of it. It makes sense why she's just taking her stepmother's tyranny while holding everything in because this isolation and neglect is all she knows. This is the entire limited scope of her world. A sad reality to many cases of abuse in real life.
And they just. Erased all of this for some. Reason???
Tumblr media
The night at the ball was a big deal because she literally NEVER gets to go out. This is the only time she interacts with the outside world aside from the ending. The impact of that was HUGE in the original movie. The new one just cheapened that imo by implying she goes out in town and talks to others regularly. This event was an impossible, fantastical dream come true to someone who is never treated as anything but a servant to everyone she knows.
Basically OG!Cinderella has it way worse which is what makes the ball such a huge deal in the first place.
Tumblr media
Third point I don't think I need to explain how Cinderella staying in her abusive home bc the house is "hers to love now that her parents are dead" is not a good character change and doesn't make sense. I would understand if her dad was alive and insisting on staying, but he is GONE. It is a building you grew up in sure, but that's all it is. Not something you sacrifice your wellbeing for. So that's a shit reason they didn't need to make up to say why this character is stuck in her abusive household. The isolation and years of gaslighting were enough. (Also showing how much of a frightening presence and manipulative villain Lady Tremaine is.)
And she sure left it quick after getting hitched lol
Tumblr media
The Fairy Godmother having the audacity to test Cinderella with that "oh I'm a poor old woman and I want some milk please" nonsense
Not very godmotherly of her in this version. 🥴 The Fairy Godmother appeared in the original to offer pure comfort to Cinderella in a time of desperate need, when this resilient and kind spirit finally reached her breaking point. The dress, slippers, pumpkin carriage, and magic were all given freely as a present to make her feel better at least for one night.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile this goofy ass Godmother has the audacity to be like "hey is she gonna be nice or not even though she's crying in tattered, recently destroyed clothing- I need to see that or else she doesn't get the magic juice". Like why did this become a way to test her morality all of a sudden? Why did you need something from her to give up the magic goods?? It's not even a good test she just walked a couple steps and poured some milk in a bowl,,,
Tumblr media
Idk man they made their relationship transactional for no reason which taints the original purpose of this scene imo. The original Fairy Godmother already KNEW Cinderella was kind without having to make sure by disguising herself as a rancid old lady. 😭 Weird and unnecessary addition.
Kinda nitpicky here but this film did not at all match the terror of the torn dress scene which really shows you how horrifying and humiliating it was to Cinderella
Comparison
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THE BIGGEST OFFENDER: THE WAY SHE "ESCAPED".
I NEED TO TAKE A BREATH
BECAUSE LIKE. WHAT WAS THAT.
Original Cinderella, seeing a real chance of escape from her abuse, uses everything in her possession to do so. She's yelling for the mice to get the key, to get Bruno to chase away the cat, running down to meet the prince's attendants to make sure they get the proof of her identity from her- and that moment she oh-so-casually pulled out the second slipper??? SEEING HER STEPMOTHER'S SLACKED JAW??? GAGGED US ALL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ICONIC
But 2015. Bitch. What is going on. She gets locked up and easily accepts her doom. She just twirls and sings in her prison like a dunce because cINDerELLa wAs aLReADy cONTenT wIth her sMaLL mOMEnts oF hAPPIneSs anD dREamS wItH thE pRinCE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just. Gives up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not the mice begging her to get up and save herself come on now
Tumblr media
The mice have to do their best on their own to push open her window so the prince and his crew hear her on time.
And yeah, all she had to do was open a window.
Tumblr media
WHAT. WHY. HOW. WAS THIS??? MORE EMPOWERING???
1950: use your brain to fight to the very end
2015: quit while you're still ahead, or don't try you just gotta dance and sing all pretty then someone will come along and save you
I'm sorry, but for a production that was so critical of the notion of "Cinderella just waited around for a prince to save her"...is that not literally what they changed the ending to?
You wanna talk about lack of agency in princess stories well here you go 😭
You know what's sad about all this in the end is this is still the best recent live action Disney remake imo LOL
Anyways hello if you've made it all the way down here I rest my case

Not "AFO being the final boss undoes all of Tomura's development," or "the body snatching plot line was a last minute decision," but a secret third fourth fifth sixth and seventh thing....
3. ("Weekly manga is an inherently flawed storytelling medium when it comes to telling cohesive stories, and authors are often required to stretch their main plot points thin over hundreds of chapters/several years. When you sit down to analyze or critique MHA, I sincerely feel you need to take the restriction of its medium/genre as well as the restrictions on the artist into consideration. One must also consider that this is a story that has been written over the course of a decade-- A certain degree of "mutation" between the story's beginning and its ending is both acceptable & anticipated within this medium.")
4. ("That being said, Hori does consistently do a much better job of telling a coherent story with consistent themes than people give him credit for, and credit should be given where it's due-- while there are some poorly/hastily implemented narrative elements and plot points where it can be argued that Hori decided to change gears, they are not the story-breaking sins that people make them out to be. And ultimately, Tomura's possession does work as a natural progression of the story Hori is attempting to tell and as something that builds off and solidifies the themes established throughout MHA.")
5. ("Tomura's arc is that of a victim trapped in the cycle of abuse told through a lens of fantasy. He was always a victim of AFO and always someone who had his identity abused out of him, and the body-snatch plotline is just a variation of telling that story in a way that leaves no room for argument. Tomura's arc and Izuku's arc also foil and build off each other, and a lot of the misunderstandings I've seen re: MHA's trajectory come from fans who either disregard Izuku's arc in favor of fixating on Tomura's arc (or vice versa) instead of reading these arcs as two parts of a whole-- both arcs grapple with "identity" and how you define yourself vs how others try to define you, the romanticization of self-destructive traits and how it's necessary to have good social support and people who are willing to step in and stop you from hurting yourself, systemic and individual dehumanization, adults failing to protect them when they need it, valid anger and an intolerance for injustice being taken advantage of a twisted into something intensely self-destructive, etc. Ignoring Izuku's arc and how it both reflects and intertwines with Tomura's (& vice versa) means missing out on understanding the core of both characters and what their respective roles in this narrative is. TL;DR Tomura being a victim in need of saving and Izuku being the one in a position to save him is something that has been cooking since Tomura's debut at USJ *more on this later*")
6. ("Hori started off not wanting to give his villains any humanizing qualities because he wanted them to remain "scary" to his readers-- but it's fairly clear that he developed a sense of appreciation and sympathy for his villains as his story progressed and his ability as a writer developed. As a direct result of this, his story eventually grew beyond treating the LOV as hollow tools to "scare" the readers. Hori grew, and so did MHA. The trajectory of the story changing to reflect Hori's growth should not be treated as a bad thing bc, again, this change/growth does not actually violate the initial premise of MHA in an unforgiveable way-- it actually services the natural progression of the story and its characters.")
7. ("Saving Tomura and the LOV is the ultimate goal of the series, and that goal is built off of literally everything Hori has established up to this point. You will never find inner peace or enjoy the manga's good qualities if you keep agonizing over what could have been. Reacting to the manga as a whole on a week-to-week basis will only skew your understanding of the story as a whole. Et cetera Et cetera Et cetera.")

maybe this is a hot take but i think there's a difference between having empathy for a character or feeling protectiveness over them and straight up infantilising the character in question, and i unfortunately see the latter quite a lot

Okay incoming rant about the kdrama goblin under the cut
To note: i am currently right after episode 7 so i do not have all the info
I find the main couple's dynamic REALLY icky and honestly I can't suspend my concerns for the sake of the story..
The main girl had been told she would be the Goblin's bride since she was a literal CHILD, she has no friends, no support system and no one to look out for her.
Her only place to live is the Goblin's house which means she has to bend to his every whim even the ones he thinks are as a joke. And sure WE might assume he wouldn't actually kick her out but SHE doesn't know that.
The only other people in her life are; the guy tasked with killing her, Sunny (i love her but girl is too busy with.. life(?) to care for a teenager) and the Chaebol who only listens to the Goblin and the grandpa (who only listens to the Goblin)..
Literally her life and her stability and her ability to be housed, fed and able to study entirely relies on the guy she's been told she would marry since forever.
She is NINETEEN YEARS OLD!!!
He is 937!!!!!
She is entirely dependent on him, as been led to believe (not wrongly but still) that he needs her not for her but for the sword thing (WHICH SHE STILL DOESNT KNOW ACTUALLY DOES).
This is like the perfect setting for the worst power dynamic ever for the most dangerous relationship ever.
He calls her "child" even in his head.
He KNOWS she's a literal kid particularly compared to him.
He still acts like a jealous toddler when she tries to meet people, gives her the silent treatment followed by love bombing, went to try to intimidate a guy (WHO HE KNEW WHEN HE WAS A TODDLER) because she was happy to see him??????????
He literally almost killed her with a little push.
The 'saving her' moment was supposed to look romantic but honestly it's horrifying how much power he holds over her at all time when she's so young and so alone and so dependent.
She literally felt badly enough to work two jobs as well as school to try to get a place to avoid his mistreatment!!!
and like it's supposed to be played as 'teasing' and 'jealousy' and 'emotional' but honestly it grosses me out.
He gets mad if she asks questions (most things), if she doesn't ask questions (particularly when it rains), if she tries to see him or if she tries to avoid him.
AM I SUPPOSED TO ROOT FOR THEM??????????????
Literally only watching for Mr. grimreaper and Sunny because the main couple gives me hives rn

I love trying to Jash people but MAN is it difficult tho
"Can i listen to them on Spotify?" Yea but the videos themselves are important as well plus he worked hard on them so you should watch them on youtube instead.
"Okay well what order do i watch them in?" *gives a list* this is the canonical order but there's 2 videos that have multiple songs in them. So you have to listen to a part of the video, leave, listen to other songs, and eventually come back to finish it.
"Okay but i should understand the lore very well at that point right" WELL YOU SEE THE THING IS-

New getter brain worms have been so bad and I haven’t even finished a rewatch with my friend or the damn au fic I’m working on but I’m still baffled people said “It LoOkS bAd” and so tempted to do compilation of some of its best chronographic animation even if I’ll be stirring a pot- which I don’t want but man I’m so sick of the art style slander when it has one of the most unique styles I’ve seen in a show. Just because it’s stiff most of the time or can’t be in a higher resolution doesn’t mean it can’t look good or have some great animation every so often because it sure as hell does and I’m sick of pretending it doesn’t!

Hi Cece! I don't know where else to ask about this, but are people aware that Somik-Severinka completely stole another simmer's notes and then went and monetized all the custom recipe stuff? I thought it is about time to say something somewhere, because they've gone a long time now without giving any credit or thanks whatsoever. Thank u and I hope you have a good day!
Hey idk anything about this bestie, I don't really know the creator you're talking about very well. If you have proof of this I'd say try going to the original creator and seeing what they have to say about it, if they want to say something I'll gladly boost their voice on the subject but otherwise there isn't much I can offer. It's not my work/tou so it's more up to them to speak about if they find it necessary I suppose? If the original creator makes/made a post feel free to drop me the link and I'll reblog it though.

This is both a personal opinion and an opinion that might come off as snobbish to some, but I think that for a derivative work (prequels/sequels, adaptations, spoofs, fanfic, whatever) to be really good it has to engage meaningfully with the original text.
And by that I don't necessarily mean strict faithfulness to the original - subversion and satire are forms of engagement. But in kinda the same way that you have to know the forms before you can meaningfully break them, a creator has to demonstrate that they understand the original text before the choice to depart from it becomes interesting. If punctuation starts to get haphazard when the POV character's thoughts are racing anxiously, that conveys meaning. If punctuation is always haphazard, the only thing it means is that the writer needs a better editor. Likewise I think reinterpretation done well can be almost endlessly interesting. But straight up ignoring the themes or characterization of the original text basically always just reads as bad storytelling - and bad regardless of how interesting those choices might be in isolation! - because good storytelling requires attentiveness and specificity.
Obviously this is always going to be subjective to a certain extent. But my underlying complaint with both a lot of sequels or adaptations (otherwise well-made and well-acted) and a lot of fanfics (otherwise well-written on a technical level) is that they feel less like a narrative conversation, and more like a creator mashing their dolls together in a way that they personally find compelling but which has nothing whatsoever to do with the dolls themselves. One is annotation, or editing, or correspondence: continually expanding upon or picking apart or circling around a particular idea so that the discussion gets richer and more nuanced as it goes on. The other is opening a Word document, erasing everything there, and writing something unrelated without changing the name of the save file.
And at that point it's like - the story you're trying to tell might even be a good one! But both your story AND the original text would probably be better served if you just told it from scratch, rather than trying to shoehorn a square peg into a round hole because the round hole has brand-name recognition.

~The Dread Pirate Davey Crandall~
#Double Crossbones#Donald O'Connor#no one cares I realise that but I'm not going to stop this is for me#Anne Bonny catching him lol#the flynning#that earring#when I say this film is ridiculous I mean it in the best possible way#silly and cheesy and totally detached from reality#I've said it before and I will say it again: flawless no notes#my single complaint is that there's only one song and it's not very catchy#Davey should have sung a sea shanty with the pirates at some point come on#also his main wig situation is atrocious#it's like just some fringe pinned to his real hair??? v. non-committal attempt to give the illusion of length#but the braids with the black hat and the immaculate white ringlets go a long way to making up for this#not over that disguise#his eyes are the only thing that give it away like otherwise you would never imagine#not to drag up a tag ramble from years ago or anything but this def. emphasises once again the importance of eyebrows#the dark eyebrows and probably the eyeliner are what make him look SO different even more than the wig#yes I'm still on this ready and willing to re-litigate the lack of care taken in Loki's sequel appearances ALWAYS OKAY#my rant about $200 million movies with no continuity and shitty wigs is EVERGREEN#this is a lowish budget movie from 1950 and I'm still complaining about wigs#although they're mostly legit better than the mcu offerings AM I WRONG#the beard also makes him look older but for real it's the eyebrows that put it over
