“Please!!!” You whined, grabbing at your friend’s arm. He looked at you in defeat, running a hand through his hair from nerves.

“Why me, though? I’m not good enough to even try and impress anyone’s parents!”

“Shut up! You are!” You replied, scrunching your eyebrows.

“Okay, sure. Whatever. I’ll do it just this once okay?” He sighed, biting at his lip.

You squealed and wrapped your arms around his neck to give him a hug and yelped a “Thank you so much!” into his neck.

He chuckled and hugged you back, patting your back. “When is the party?”

“Friday evening!”

“This Friday? That’s in three days!” He yelped. You nodded at him and smiled.

“They’ll love you! I promise! Mom will talk too fast, but don’t worry. If you need her to slow down, just say so, okay?”

“When is our flight?” He asked nervously.

“Tomorrow we leave at 10 am!

“You’re going to give me a heart attack!” He laughed. You chuckled and gave him a kiss on the cheek, walking away and reminding him to pack.

“You can come over to mine when you’re done packing, okay? We have to be at the airport early!”

He scoffed as you exited the dorm, punching at his chest with his fist. All he had ever wanted was to be by your side, showing you off. Now he would be, but not in reality.

You sighed as you closed his dorm’s door, leaning against the wall and grabbing at your shirt over your chest. You had liked Hoseok for a while now and to be a fake couple at Christmas made your heart pound. You weren’t so sure you could keep your heart and emotions steady for an entire week, but you were going to try. You pushed yourself off the wall, heading to your apartment a few blocks away.

You laughed at a story a cousin just finished telling you about your aunt. You looked across the room at your best friend, catching his eye. He gave you a helpless look as you watched your mom’s mouth move way too fast. You excused yourself from your cousin, walking over to Hoseok. You wrapped your arm around his neck, plopping onto his lap.

“Hey, baby girl! What’s up?” Your mom asked. Hoseok wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you closer and leaned into you.

“Thank you,” he whispered. You patted his shoulder in reply, looking back at your mom.

“Nothing much! Emily was going on about something your sister did the other day,” you laughed. Your mom smiled and eyed you two, her smile widening.

“You two make a good couple. You compliment each other well!” Your mom suddenly said. You looked down at him in surprise, definitely not expecting that to come out of her mouth.

“Uh, thank you!” You squeaked. She smirked at you both, her happy eyes looking between you two.

“Well, I’ll let you two mingle! I need to go check on the ham!” She said, walking away.

You looked down at your best friend, seeing a big smile upon his face.

“What?”

“Nothing,” he shook his head.

You leaned back in your seat, your stomach satisfied with your mom’s homemade cooking after so long. You stood from your chair, letting him know you needed the restroom. During dinner he had continuously laughed, causing your heart to flip like crazy. You needed a quick break…

When you came out a few minutes later, he was leaning against a doorframe as he watched your family interact. You smiled as you watched, enjoying his happiness.

“Hey! They’re under mistletoe!” A kid yelled, pointing at you two.

“Yes, they are! You guys should kiss!” Your mom gasped. You looked over at your dad, desperately wanting him to step in right there and say you didn’t have to. The smile on his face gave you no hope.

“Are you okay with that?” You asked quietly, looking up at Hoseok. He stood up straight, nodding. You gulped and wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him close as he looked into your eyes intensely.

“Ready?” He whispered. You stood on your tiptoes, pressing your lips to his in reply. He hummed and grabbed at your waist, pulling you even closer. His mouth was warm and set you on fire, his strong hands splayed across your back. The hoots and yells pulled you two away, your chest heaving for air. You stepped back, hands sliding down his shoulders and to his chest. You gripped at his shirt, afraid if you let go you would collapse on the floor.

“Good?” He whispered, his voice gravelly.

“Mmhm. Good,” you confirmed back.

“Okay, you two! Time for presents!” Your mom interrupted your staring contest. You mumbled and stepped back from Hoseok, his hand sliding down your arm to wrap his fingers around yours. You laughed giddily, leaning into his chest for comfort.

Hours later, everyone was gone and you began cleaning up. You helped your mom wash dishes, Hoseok collecting all the stray cups and plates around the house and bringing them to you.

“Thanks,” you said as he handed you another.

“Can we talk outside?” He asked. You gave him a quizzical look and handed the plate to your mom, following him outside.

“I like you,” he immediately spoke as the door shut.

“Yea, I know. I like you too!” You laughed awkwardly.

“No, I mean more than a friend. I actually love you. I just haven’t been bold enough to say anything to you and -“

You cut him off with a kiss, his strong arms instantly around you. His tongue chased yours this time, his mouth abusing yours in the best way. You moaned as his hands moved down your back, pushing his hands into your jean’s back pockets. He moaned back, pushing you against him as best he could. You pulled back, gasping for oxygen as his lips trailed your jaw. You laughed at his enthusiasm, walking a few steps back to lean against the house.

“H-hoseok. Chill out!” You mumbled. He pulled back, looking at your face with a satisfied smile.

“Will you be my girlfriend for real?” He whispered, kissing your nose. You quickly nodded, allowing his lips to capture yours again in a sweet, slow kiss. He pulled away and smiled down at you in happiness.

“Does that mean you love me too?” He cracked.

“Mm. In more ways than you can imagine!”

His smile grew bigger, burying his face into your neck and giving it a wet kiss. You laughed at him, hugging him close to you and never letting go.

Kihyun

“Kihyun? I have a question,” you suddenly spoke. He jumped, causing one of your feet to slide off of his lap. He turned to you and gave you a nod, letting you know he was listening. “So, next week is Christmas right? Well I kind of need a boyfriend because I might have lied to my mom that I have one!” You said in one breath.

“Why would you say that to her when you dont?”

You shrugged and frowned. “My aunts, uncles and cousins are always on me about when I’m going to get married! I’m tired of saying I don’t have anyone,” you huffed. Kihyun set his phone aside on the couch’s arm, turning to face you. Your legs slid off him the rest of the way at his action.

“And you’re asking me to be a pretend boyfriend?” You nodded your head enthusiastically, smiling at him. “How will we pull that off?” He asked, concerned.

“I’ve been your guy’s makeup artist for two years and your best friend for a little longer. I think we know each other well enough!”

He closed his eyes and leaned his head against the back of the couch in thought. “When would we have to leave Korea?” He asked quietly.

“I already have flights scheduled for Monday,” you laughed.

His eyes shot open in surprise, gaping at you. “That’s in four days!!” He squeaked.

“Yup!”

“I have to get organised and pack right now!” He replied, standing up and heading towards his room. You laughed at him, leaning back and closing your eyes for a quick nap.

You stepped off the plane Tuesday afternoon, Kihyun yawning behind you. You turned to grab for your carry on, but Kihyun gently nudged you out of the way and took care of it for you. You blushed and thanked him, going ahead and hoping he didn’t see the redness on your face. You two quickly pushed your way to baggage claim, impatiently waiting for your luggage. Kihyun took hold of both y’all’s bags, letting you know he was ready to venture into finding your parents. You were too excited to be able to touch them after almost a year from your last visit. You quickly tugged your best friend down the long and wide corridor, giggling with anticipation.

“Babe, they’ll be there! Slow down!” Kihyun chuckled. It was a good thing Kihyun jokingly called you “babe” sometimes because it would help make the story believable. You rounded the corner, Kihyun huffing behind you with your bags. He smiled when you smiled, seeing you catch sight of your parents and brother. He watched as you ran towards them, arms open for a giant family hug. He reached your little reunion circle, standing patiently and waiting.

Once your hug was done, you stepped back and reached for Kihyun’s arm. You held onto his bicep as he bowed, thanking your parents for the plane tickets and warm hearts. They immediately bowed back, your Father opting for a firm handshake. Kihyun’s smile was wide as he looked at you, happiness glossing his eyes.

“Mom! Dad! This is Kihyun!” You said happily, squeezing his arm nervously. He moved his hand down your arm, linking your fingers with his.

“So lovely to meet you! She talks about you all the time!” Your mom smiled. Your cheeks flushed yet again as you looked up at Kihyun. He smirked down at you, leaning down to kiss your temple. You giggled against your will, coughing to cover it up. “Alright, kids! Let’s get home, get you settled and get you some food!” Your mom said, clapping her hands together. Your dad and brother grabbed the bags before Kihyun could, causing him to pout.

“I wanted to do that!” He complained to you in Korean. You rolled your eyes and slapped at his chest, tugging him along with you as you followed your family.

Once at the house, your bags were carried upstairs to your old room, you and Kihyun following close behind. You thanked your dad and brother for the help and turned towards your room. Your eyes widen at the fact you would be sharing a room with Kihyun.

“Uh, Dad? Where is Kihyun sleeping?” You asked before he could get downstairs. He gave you a quizzical look as he eyed the both of you.

“Well, we assumed you two shared a bed. Your aunt Ray is staying with us and she’s in the guest bedroom! Sorry, kids!” He turned to jog down the stairs, leaving you two alone.

“I can sleep on the couch?” Kihyun offered.

“No!” You said a bit too quickly. “I mean, no. They’ll think something is wrong if we do that. It’s okay, my bed is big enough for us!” You shrugged. Your heart was beating out of your chest at the thought and it wouldn’t stop.

“Kids! Dinner will be ready soon!” Your mom yelled up the stairs. You huffed and quickly pulled your sweaty hair into a ponytail. Kihyun changed into some lounge pants and a tshirt, spritzing some cologne on his tired body. He smiled over at you as you took your jeans off and slid on a pair of his sweatpants.

“That’s where my pants went!” He laughed. You smirked over at him in playfulness, tightening the strings.

“Yup! They keep me warm!” You countered. He shrugged and grabbed at your hand, pulling you close as you walked down the stairs.

Dinner was almost over as you sat back to listen to the conversation. Kihyun was fitting right in and you were so happy. You knew he was the right person to ask. He was confident in himself and loved everyone deeply. Especially you, but you didn’t know. When your name was brought up in the conversation you tuned back in, leaning into your best friend’s side.

“So, what makes my baby girl so special to you, young man?” Your dad addressed Kihyun. You looked at Kihyun in panic, but his eyes were calm and so was his relaxed smile.

“She cooks really well and always helps me when I cook! She’s kind and caring and loves kids! I feel very comfortable around her all the time!” Kihyun replied truthfully. You looked up at him in silence, awed. Your cheeks were tinted red as he looked down at you, smiling. Your mom cleared her throat, standing to clear the table.

Kihyun broke the eye contact you held as he stood, helping to collect plates and silverware as well. Your mom smacked his hands away, telling him to rest after such a long journey. He only nodded, turning towards you and receiving a shrug.

“Get to know dad and my brother okay? I’ll go help my mom!” You mumbled in Korean, kissing his cheek. He smiled and sat back down, starting a conversation with the other two men in your life.

You entered the kitchen and eyed your mom as she hummed while washing dishes.

“Mom?” When she didn’t react you tapped her shoulder, causing her to jump, turning around to face you.

“I didn’t hear you, baby! What’s up?” She asked, reaching her hand back to turn the faucet off.

“I think I’m in love with Kihyun,” you said quietly.

She cocked her head to the side in confusion. “I hope you do! You’re dating!”

“About that! We’re not really together! We are best friends, though! I was just tired of the family asking me when I’d date,” you whined.

“Oh, Honey! I could talk to them if you like?” She grabbed your hands, tugging you close.

You shook your head. “No, it’s okay. We can keep it up! Just don’t tell dad please!!”

Just then Kihyun peeked his head through the door. “Babe, I’m going to wash up and head to bed, okay?” You nodded in acknowledgement, looking back at your mom as he disappeared.

“Will you be okay sharing a bed with him for a few nights?” Your mom asked seriously. You blushed, yet again, nodding.

“Yea, uh. We’ve seen each other naked and stuff?” You choked. Her eyes widened in question. “Ya see, he was super sick one time and could barely move. So I’d give him baths every day for about a week! He saw me on accident because he walked in on me changing!” You laughed at the memory. Your mom continued to stay quiet. “So yea. We’re good, super comfortable around each other!” You finished.

Your mom pulled away and smirked at you. “How he spoke of you tonight and how you looked at him, I’d say you both have feelings. Maybe tell him and see where it goes?” She suggested.

“Thanks, Momma! I’m going to bed too! So tired!” She nodded and let go of your hands, allowing you to go wash up. You told your dad and brother Goodnight, giving them hugs and heading to the bathroom.

You slowly walked towards your bedroom where you knew Kihyun was waiting. You grabbed the doorknob and took a deep breath, turning it and entering your room. Kihyun looked up at you from his phone, moving to sit on the edge of your bed. It was so silent and awkward you could almost feel it pressing against your skin. You smiled at him and took a few steps into the room, shutting your door.

“Did you really mean all those things about me earlier?” You asked quietly, not looking at him straight on. He stood from your bed and shuffled the few steps towards you. He grabbed at your jaw gently, forcing you to look at him.

“Yes! I meant everything I said and more,” he breathed, stepping closer and grabbing for your hands in his. You searched his eyes, praying you wouldn't find any negative feelings in his expressions. You saw nothing but joy and that made you happy. You inhaled like you were beginning to assess the situation.

“I’m not really good at this dating thing,” you laughed. Kihyun hummed in reply, lips crashing to yours in a slow, intimate kiss. You gasped against his mouth, his hands dropping yours and grabbing at your face. You smiled against his lips, pulling away slightly.

“Mm. Who knew kissing your best friend was this fun?” You laughed softly. Kihyun pressed his forehead to yours, smirking at your joke.

“I have liked you for so long. I’m so thankful this trip has brought us together,” he spoke into the air.

“I don’t recall you ever asking for us to be together?” You joked. Kihyun rolled his eyes, stepping back and grabbing your hands once again.

“Will you please do me the honour of becoming my real girlfriend?” He asked, making puppy dog eyes at you. You giggled at his silliness, wrapping your arms around him in a hug. He sighed in content, wrapping his own arms around you tightly. You stood there for a few moments, wrapped in each other’s happiness.

He eventually pulled away and smiled down at you. “Merry Christmas, baby!”

“Merry Christmas to you too! Now let’s get some beauty sleep!” You dragged him to the bed, immediately wrapping yourself around him to cuddle. He didn’t complain as he missed your forehead and brought you in closer.

To Trust or Not to Trust, That is the Question

So many mixed feelings surrounding The Situation with MG right now. It’s so difficult to trust allegations made against idols/celebrities because of the frankly vicious Internet culture in Korea (netizens have too much god damn power) and an ingrained sociocultural competitiveness that breeds the desire to tear people down. This much is evident in many cases of celebrities being wrongly accused yet still facing serious consequences. But there ARE obviously cases in which K-celebrities have and probably still do legitimately and legally shitty things, and pass them under the rug because of fame and money. Considering how “trendy” it’s been to put idols in scandals these last few days, too, makes me very skeptical. There will always people who have it so out for celebrities because they present the most public and, therefore, accessible form of success.

As an American with mixed cultural values, I hate having mixed feelings about this. I have long been on the side of the victims because (a) it takes so much damn courage to speak up, (b) abuse of power is disgusting, and (c) I am a victim of abuse and people who aren’t do not understand how hard it can be to talk about, especially if you thought your experiences were “normal” for so long. Having very close friends who grew up in Korea, I am further well aware that the social side of school life there can be fucking brutal. International fans don’t understand that some of the shit that goes down cannot be frivolously passed off as “It was just high/middle school!!” It can be so dehumanizing sometimes. Where is your sense of humanity and empathy for those who could have been traumatized and are dealing with the repurcussions? Imagine being abused to the nines and seeing fans of your abuser forgive them that easily? Abuse also doesn’t just mean the most extreme things we know of (sexual, physical)—just saying mean things, verbal abuse, is indeed abuse. Yes, we are naive as kids and adolescents and are fully capable of learning to be better. But age and immaturity don’t absolve the effects having done shitty things. It’s only part of the explanation.

With all this said, however, there are just so many things that muddy up the water that make having judgments so difficult. I rarely take neutral sides in these types of accusations for the reasons above. But the unique nature of Korean entertainment, and the culture it’s entrenched in, pushes me towards neutrality. While the reality of Korean society is very harsh, that harshness has been equally unfairly used as fabrications of reality against celebrities. I am fully aware that this string of scandals could be throwing dirt on a clean resume (and that really sucks because it harms the legitimacy of REAL accusations). It’s important to not be definitive about anything until things are resolved, which I hope to the gods these companies can grant their artists at the very least.

I am of the firm belief that we don’t really know our idols. If you do, you need a reality check. The nature of idol culture is to breed that sense of familiarity for profit, and it is all well and good to indulge in healthily, which is to say in moderation and self-awareness. A similar principle goes for really admiring or having great affection for people in your life whom you haven’t really gotten to know: like people in your workplace or other students/teachers you only talk to in specific social environments; individuals on the internet who you constantly talk to or interact with but don’t know in real life.

I also think it’s admirable that we try to see the best parts in people, but the fact of the matter is that human beings make mistakes and do shitty things. All of us. What we have to do is own up to and grow from them. It’s fucking scary to have as wide-reaching of a public platform and voice as idols/celebs, and the risk of losing an entire career or audience sounds paralyzing, especially given the trajectory of so many idols wronged by false accusations (e.g. Wonho, B.I.). Following a voice for so long and trusting in the light they provide you makes questioning that light source even harder and more painful. I get it, god I do.

But never forget your roots as a human being. You are a person first, fan second. As a victim, it’s so painful to see blind, unwavering trust of fans in those who do so much wrong and get away with it. It’s not just about MG or K-pop idols, it’s about a far bigger picture of power, abuse, social hierarchies, justice, truth, empathy, self-awareness, and reality. I’m not saying that we aren’t allowed to continue loving and appreciating MG, or seeing him as a fundamentally good person who can grow. In fact, I fucking hate cancel culture like you wouldn’t believe, especially for singular or rare fiascos (with exception, of course, on a case-by-case basis; VIPs who still support Seungri are beyond reality at this point imo...) But god knows fans in K-Pop can be so wrapped up in their love for their faves that the idea of them being imperfect in more serious ways is absurd. And the fact that we think it’s also our business is an entirely different can of worms.

Take care of yourself in these times. Step away from the Internet (especially Twitter, good lord) if you must. Stay vigilant, critical, and never forget your roots. We love and respect Seventeen and K-Pop in this household, but we should also love and respect human beings in general.

My heart physically hurts.

I haven’t been a Monbebe for long but I found them by accident and they pulled me in. Even though I didn’t join at the beginning I went back and watched No. Mercy, I watched the variety shows and they’re comeback stages.

No. Mercy pushed them to the brink and they survived. They persevered and debuted. They’re the sweetest most genuine group that I’ve seen. They truly care about each other and their fans.

Since day one Wonho has been there for the fans. He’s outspoken about his love for us AND his progressive views. It breaks my heart that when the boys start growing in popularity scandals target the member who wears his heart on his sleeve. The one who is always online interacting with Monbebe.

I hope leaving is HIS choice. And yes it pains me but I will respect it. If he wants a break he deserves it. Although I wish that he could just take a break and not officially leave.

Thank you for everything Wonho. The time that we had with you in Monsta X was precious and I can’t wait to see what you do in the future if you continue on as an artist. I am sorry that we as a fan base could not keep our promises to you.

I will continue to support the rest of the members and they’re going to need our support right now maybe more than ever.

Opening his jar of hair gel, he glances towards the other guy. Eyes fixed on the phone while letting his unkempt hair falling, covering parts of his face. Good looking? Yes.

         “Hyung, what are you doing?” Kihyun is back to styling up his hair.

         “Hmm? Nothing, I’m going through a set of playlists. Found a good artist online.” His eyes are still on the screen, fixated.

         “You can go down first; the others are having breakfast downstairs.”

         “Are you done?” Their eyes meet on the mirror.

         “Not yet, will be in minutes.”

         “Then, I’ll wait for you.” Shownu approach Kihyun, taking in the incredible visual.

         “Why are you dressing up? Do we have plan?” He plays with the accessories that Kihyun laid on the table near the mirror.

         “Nope, just feel like it. Why? Is it excessive?” Kihyun turns to Shownu with a nervous expression. “Should I tone it down?”

         Shownu scrunches up his nose and grab a cap from the table. “I’m wearing this, mine is in the luggage already.” He then proceeds to walk to the door. He leans by the wall and stares at Kihyun.

         “Hyung! Answer me, should I tone it down?” Kihyun is frustrated by the lack of answer.

         “Let’s go down, Hyunnie-ah. I’m hungry.”

         “I hate you.” Kihyun harshly picks all his belongings and pushed it in his backpack only to scatter it all out again because he is Kihyun and neat is his middle name.

         “I didn’t ask you to change, it means that you look okay. Can you stop being angry now?” Shownu chuckles.

         “You can just say it right? Is it so hard?” Kihyun glares at him.

         “Yeah, it’s hard because I’m me. And I love teasing you.” He throws his head back and let out a muffled laugh.

         After breakfast, the manager rushes them to the vans to catch their flight. Shownu go to wash his hand, leaving his cap on the table while the others leave for the van first. Wonho who sees the cap is about to yell out to Kihyun to take his cap with him but gets totally confused because Kihyun is wearing his hair up, all styled nice and pretty. No way Kihyun would wear that over his hair.

         “Why?” Shownu grabs the cap and his backpack.

         “Oh, the cap is yours? I thought it was Kihyun’s and got confused because he didn’t wear any going down just now. Whatever, let’s go.” Wonho walks away, trying to catch up to the others.

Shownu lets out a relief sigh. How observant can Wonho be to know that the cap is Kihyun’s? He feels as if this supposed to be a secret and feels foolish as the members are used to lending clothes and other stuff. He shakes his worry away.

         Kihyun is walking out of the convenience store when someone hugs him from behind. He is so ready to flip when he smells the familiar scent.

         “Hyung, you going to give me heart attack!” He turns and glares to the older guy but when he sees that cute eyes disappearing due to Shownu’s sweet smile, a laugh can’t be held in. He relaxes onto Shownu, grateful for the warmth over the chilly night wind.

         “Why are you out here?”

“I bought some eggs, we are running out of them. Going to make a special breakfast tomorrow.”

         “Why? Anything special?” Shownu let him go and walks beside him, hand in hand.

         “No, I just feel like it.”

Glancing down, Shownu realised that Kihyun is wearing his T-shirt.

         “Hey hamster, my tshirt look enormous on you. Why do you have them?”

Blushes, Kihyun drops his head. “Because you always left it in my room.”

         “Did I?” Kihyun nods.

         “Because we always are in a rush, trying not to get caught and you always sneak back to your room topless. Be grateful you had your boxers and pants on. Though I have some of them too.” Kihyun runs as soon as he said that.

Shownu laugh at how cute Kihyun is being, acting all shy after all the things they’ve done together. He watches as the younger runs into their building.

Shownu stares as Kihyun drifted to sleep, the rise and fall of the smaller frame has never failed to make him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. He can’t help but to tighten his embrace, enveloping the younger in a warm hug. He glances towards the clock, he has an hour at most. The members are all out after resting for a while at the dorm after their fan meeting just now. Due to the hectic schedule, the members are more active, trying to fit in as many things as possible in their life. A sense of freedom. A moment to escape the dangerous repetition of their dreading routine. Life is good, yes. Fans are great too, but it can get too much at times. When asked, Kihyun said he just want to sleep in today so Shownu cancelled his session at the gym. He sensed something is off but Kihyun won’t say a word. He really sleeps after dinner and secluded himself from everyone. When everyone was out, Shownu sneaks in his bed and offer his cuddles to the drowsy Kihyun. He feels Kihyun stirs and waits for him to open his eyes.

         “Hyung?” To this, Shownu hums a reply. Kihyun rolls back and sits up.

         “What time is it? Is it late?”

         “No. Hey, you still sleepy?” Shownu sits up too, facing his lover.

         “Not really, why?”

         “Let’s go eat ice-cream, I want ice cream.”

“We have some in the fridge, I…”

“No, let’s go for a walk and eat ice cream.” Shownu leaps off the bed and holds out his hand.

Kihyun was somewhat quiet during the walk so Shownu brings his concern up.

     “Hey, you okay?”

     “Hmm? Yeah, fine. Why hyung?”

     “You are too quiet, is there anything bothering you?”

Kihyun stares at Shownu and let out a sigh.

     “I’m worried.”

     “Why?”

“Today, the fans keep on mentioning that we look good together and they give me couple things and ask me to share it with you. Though I react as if it was a joke and laugh with them, I am so scared in the inside. Did they know about us? The questions that they ask are mostly about you and I try not to let my bias shine through but then this one fan laugh at my answer. Telling me I am not loyal since she had asked me the question before and my answers were inconsistent.”

“What’s the question?”

“Member that I want to travel with.”

“And your answer was?”

“You, of course.”

“No, what did you answer today?”

“Minhyuk.”

“Because?” Shownu is smiling now.

“Because I need entertainment when I travel.” Kihyun rolls his eyes.

“What kind of lie is that? You should have said because you want your friend to tag along?”

“I didn’t think of that, okay?”

“Hey, listen. Stop worrying. The fans love to see us together. We’ve knew this ever since the beginning. They think we suit each other well, our interactions intrigue them. Not that they are wrong, we do match well. But, we can’t stop them. It’s their right as a fan to have their fantasy, though this one is reality, but they don’t know that. It’s something common, so don’t stress over them okay? We were so afraid in the beginning and stresses over this so much that we promised to limit our interactions in front of the fans but what do we got from that? Aside from frustration and desperation? It’s not like we are drooling over one another, acting like some sort of perverts or horny teenagers. We are grown up, we are mature. Our relationship is so comfortable, I can’t lose it. Okay?”

Kihyun looks at Shownu and smiles.

“Then, can I say something too?”

“Sure.”

“I love you, and I don’t want to lose it too. But, I think it got too suffocating when all we do is run away from people around us.”

“What do you mean?”

“We going to keep it a secret from the members too?”

“Give them time, they’ll catch up.”

“And we will be okay with that?” Kihyun is anxious.

        “Hopefully.”

Meanwhile at the dorm, the members are back, and they notice that both Shownu and Kihyun are not there

“Aren’t they hanging out together too much?” Jooheon said, sulkily. “No fair, if they going to eat something delicious or play, they should invite me. I was just out, hanging at my studio doing nothing.”

“I don’t think it’s weird. Hyungwon hyung always have dinner with Shownu hyung. And Kihyun hyung always hangs with Minmin too.” I.M said rather nonchalantly while he eats his snack.

Hyungwon slides to sit beside I.M, asking for some of the chips. Wonho approaches the two but stops when they shake their heads disapprovingly. He laughs instead, stingy rascals.

         “I don’t know but I notice something weird lately.” Minhyuk said, attracting the attention from all of them.

         “What?” Jooheon is perks up, ready for the juicy gossip.

         “Kihyun would always nags at us when we ask to borrow his things right? Like, sure he let us have it but only after an earful of nagging. It might have been for a while, but I only noticing this lately… he never say anything to Showu hyung. Hyung would just naturally wear what his.” Tilting his head, he tries to confirm this with Hyungwon, his other roommate. He shares the room with Kihyun and Hyungwon after all.

         “Really? Maybe.” Hyungwon keep on munching on the snack.

         “Actually, yeah… that’s weird. What’s weirder is that Shownu rarely wears other people clothes.” Wonho turns and face Minhyuk. “He is very simple, he rarely goes to the extend to reach of other people stuff. He never uses my stuff, unless things like charger or IPod once in a while.”

         “Shownu hyung wears Kihyun’s shirt? Can he fit?” Joohoen is trying hard to understand the whole situation.

         “NO!” Minhyuk and Wonho reply, in unison.

         “He wears Kihyun’s accessories, things he usually doesn’t wear.” Wonho explains.

“Actually, it was Kihyun who always sleeps in Hyung’s shirt and wearing Hyung’s jacket or shirt every now and then. Which is weird also, considering Kihyun hates baggy shirt or simple stuff. He is so extra for Hyung’s stuff. Don’t you think?” This heated conversation only interest Minhyuk and Wonho, also the confused Jooheon while Hyungwon and I.M is long gone, watching the movie on the TV intently.

         The door opens, revealing Kihyun and Shownu who are flashing happy faces.

         “Oh, you guys are home already? Who wants some ramyeon?” Kihyun said, walking to the kitchen. While Shownu heads to Kihyun’s shared room, hanging the cap and the bandana he wears on Kihyun’s bed.

         “Me! Me!” Jooheon said excitedly, following Kihyun to the kitchen.

Wonho and Minhyuk shares a knowing look. They glance to Kihyun and mouthed, almost instantly “That’s Shownu’s jacket!”

The whole week, Wonho and Minhyuk has been planning to tease both Shownu and Kihyun about their rather weird habits. They suspected something is going on, but their mischievous mind won’t just let such good opportunities go. Everytime they noticed Kihyun is wearing Shownu’s clothes, Wonho would ask Shownu to lend him the exact clothes. Unaware, Shownu would try his best and make a mess in the room trying to find the piece of clothing. When he realised Kihyun is wearing it, he would blush and apologised. He would run away and refuse to mention that Kihyun is wearing his shirt.

Meanwhile, Minhyuk is keeping track of the Kihyun’s accessories that Shownu wears. Once in a while, he would mention about the accessories, implying that he wishes to borrow it from Kihyun in near future. What happened? Since Kihyun is not as clueless as Shownu, he would agree to lend it to Minhyuk. But then, he would rush to Shownu’s room, making it as discreet as possible and retrieve back the said items.

It was a fun game that Minhyuk and Wonho had plotted. But it was getting boring so the two decided to take it to the next level.

The following week, they started to give suggestive comments to Shownu and Kihyun, publicly. Be it when there are members, managers, executives or even fans. They are in the vans, heading to dinner together since K.Will sunbaenim called them up and other artists to congratulate them for their second win.

         “Ah, Kihyun is so fond of wearing baggy clothes these days. You changed your style?” Mihyuk said, trying hard to conceal his smile.

         “What do you mean, I still hate baggy clothes. It makes me look smaller.” Oblivious. Kihyun has fallen to the trap.

         “Eh, really?” Minhyuk is trying again.

         “Yes. Hey, we went shopping together last week. You see how I choose my clothes. I buy more colourful shirt nowadays huh? But not baggy shirt.” Shownu starts to understand the situation as he glances to what Kihyun is wearing. His tshirt and his sweat, enormous on that smaller guy. He nudges Kihyun, trying to send signals but fails.

Minhyuk notices this and point it out quietly to the members. “Ah, I see. So why are you wearing baggy clothes today?” Minhyk launches his last strike.

         “This is not my shirt, this is Show…” Mid-sentence, Kihyun realised what about to happen. His face flushes.

         “What did you say?” Mihyuk is now chuckling.

At that moments, the car stops. They have arrived. Kihyun rushes off the car, leaving the others to laughing fit. The others but a blushing Shownu who coolly exits the car.

As the night deepens, the mood at the dinner is a little bit livelier. Most people are tipsy, laughter is heard everywhere. Suddenly, Hyorin speaks up.

         “Hey, Shownu have the same necklace as mine. I bought it last year and it was on promotion, 1+1 so I gave it to Kihyun since he was there with me. Do you remember Kihyun?” All eyes are on Kihyun.

         “Ah, yes.”

         “Where did you buy yours?” Hyorin asks Shownu who are now too flustered to answer.

         “That is the necklace Noona, my necklace. Shownu borrow it since we were at the fan meeting just now.” Hyorin laughs.

         “Oh, I just though Shownu had a same one which would be amazing. I see.”

The room was lively again, unaffected by the exchange just now. Only two people who are shooting knowing glances to Kihyun and Shownu and that makes the pair blush harder.

Noticing that their plan is not that successful, Wonho and Minhyuk plots a new strategy. Now the whole group is on board to push Kihyun and Shownu to the limits. Every now and then, the members would mention and comment about Shownu and Kihyun interactions. Even through fanmeeting, they would make exaggerated reactions when the two plays around. That has causes the two to stay away from one another when there are people around which is almost all the time. The reaction was too much, Kihyun can’t just hold it in anymore.

They are resting in their waiting room when Shownu offer Kihyun some juice.

“Hyung never take care of us like that.” Jooheon starts.

Feeling guilty, Shownu rushes to take some more juice and pass it to the other members. “Ah, sorry.”

“It was a joke hyung, chill.” Jooheon is feeling guilty.

 “Hyung, do you still have Kihyun’s blue cap? I want to wear tomorrow.” Minhyuk chimes.

   “Yes, sure sure. I’ll pass it to you.” Shownu is now the oblivious one.

 “Why are you guys sharing too much now? Don’t you think it is getting weird?” Hyungwon strikes a blow and a smirk crept on Wonho’s face.

  “Yeah. Shownu, you never like accessories so why are you wearing them now? You want me to buy you some?” Wonho chuckles. “Or you only wear Kihyun’s?”

  “Yeah, like Kihyun only wears your clothes when it comes to baggy clothes.” Minhyuk adds and causes the other to laugh hysterically.

Sensing that the whole group has catch on and was just messing with them, Kihyun stands up and approaches Shownu. He stands proudly, clearing his throat. All eyes on him, as he wants. He turns and grabs Shownu’s face and proceed to kiss the older guy.

 “Okay, we are dating, and we share things because that what lovers do. So, can you guys pissed off, stop bothering us. It’s getting annoying.”

Shownu was standing there, stiff as the truth being reveal too abruptly. The others are stunned too. They stare and stare.

“Lee Minhyuk, close your mouth. You got what you want.” Kihyun said and turn to Shownu. “And you Son Hyunwoo, kiss me. Show them I belong to you.”

To this, Shownu laugh and brings Kihyun closer.

“I’m not sure I like the result of our plan.” I.M mumbles.

Requested: Nope, though I lowkey was going to request this on another blog but then got really inspired and decided to write it myself instead

Pairing: Monsta X Hyungwon x Wonho x Gender Neutral Reader

I’m mainly basing my knowledge of the industry from various Top Model series that my sister has forced me to watch with her, so there may be (probably will be) inaccuracy’s but I tried my best.

Hyungwon and Wonho are two models both under the same agency

both of them model for magazines and ads, but Hyungwon also does runway modelling while Wonho prefers to simply pose for the camera

they are both pretty big deals in the industry

having done various big contracts for various big name brands

shoots have been done both alone, together and with other models

let me tell you, people went crazy for the shoot the two did with model!Minhyuk and model!Changkyun

but not only are they loved for their visuals

but also their personalities

they also interact with fans a lot on social media

both of them have at least 200,000 followers on instagram and have various fan accounts dedicated to them

they are basically idols with the music career

(that is until famous producer!Jooheon did a collab with Wonho, which broke the Wonho stans when they heard his vocals)

Hyungwon loves shoots that take him outside of Korea, loving to travel

he is also an acted, though not very active in the industry

when people hear ‘model’ they immediately think of narcissistic, uptight people

but these two boys couldn’t be more different

they are both the softest, sweetest things ever

Wonho is so much more than just abs

he really shows off how sweet and considerate he is when on set

he asks how all the staff are and helps out with any heavy lifting that may need to be done

any co models are looked after by him

he makes sure that any female models he has to work with are comfortable, as well as males

Hyungwon is also more than just a pretty face

while quieter than Wonho and Minhyuk, and less outgoing

he is still a sweet baby

while people expect someone of his visuals to be dressed up well and with a cold attitude almost

our frog boy will often turn up to shoots barely awake, face all puffy and still half in his pajamas

and though photographers and companies think this unprofessional, they immediately chuck those thoughts away as Hyungwon smiles tiredly at them and just genuinely looks like a baby they need to protect

and people love it when the two of them are together

their Tom and Jerry style relationship is hilarious

both of them are huge teases, and this is amplified when they are put together

cue makeup-artist!Shownu shaking his head is amusement and photographer!Kihyun in exasperation in the background as they argue over who suits the dark concept better

they are often seen appearing on each others instagrams and snapchats

usually stealing the others food or camera time

of course, with being famous comes shipping

and these two are a popular ship in their fanbases

especially since Hyungwon played a female character in a tv show and a video of Wonho fanboying over the character ‘Dodo’ got out

so when a statement was released about the two being in a relationship the Hyungwonho fans went crazy

nothing much changed in their relationship on camera

they are professionals after all, and have to act it

but every now and then you will get a cute picture of the two on one of their instagrams

one that suggests more than a platonic relationship

they are still the idiots that tease each other, it’s just that now they do it “because I love you”

now, it is about year later when you come into the picture

you are the one of the stylist’s that will be working on one of the rare shoots that the two will be doing together

of course, being in the fashion industry, you are very knowledgeable about the people in the same work force, including make up artists, other stylists, designers and of course, models

so you are familiar with Hyungwon and Hoseok, and actually consider yourself a fan

you follow their careers quite closely, considering them both very talented people that you look up to

so when you find out that they are two of the models at the shoot you are quite excited

sadly though you won’t be styling them, having been assigned to the team for the female models

the shoot is for a clothing lines winter collection, but not the outdoorsy coats and scarves you expect

but more party oriented, so there are lot’s of dresses, silk shirts and suits, fancy jewelry and high heels

as you are getting one of the girls dressed backstage, you hear some commotion coming from the main set

walking out, you find out that one of the models hadn’t shown up, saying last minute that they couldn’t make it due to illness

the shoot’s director is quite obviously stressing out, so you decide to just start backing away, deciding that the situation has nothing to do with you when the man in question looks around and catches your eye

“Hey! You there? Have you ever modelled? If not, then welcome to your first time,” he says towards you

while you just stand there, not having expected anything like this and before you can answer anything some staff are ushering you back to where you were

and this time you are the one with clothes being fitted onto you instead of the other way round

some of the other stylists are mentioning about how lucky you are

because if the likes of Wonho, Hyungwon, Hyolyn and Bora are models at this shoot; the fact that the director thinks that you have what it takes to work with them is a massive compliment

and you...aren’t actually all that nervous

mainly excited

because you yourself have quite a big following on social media

you post ootd’s and selfies often, and so you aren’t a stranger to being in front of a camera

you know fashion and you know how to work clothes and your body in order to look your best, so you aren’t worried that you will completely mess up and look an idiot

so with your confidence up thanks to your fellow stylists compliments, plus that of Hyolyn, the famous female model who just so happened to pop in to welcome you and check up on you; you are ready to walk out there and do you best

and that you do

you don’t get a chance to properly introduce yourself to anyone else before you are ushered into a solo shoot

you do however catch eyes with Wonho who is stood by photographer!Kihyun and smile politely, which he returns brightly

soon enough, it is somebody else’s turn to be in front of the camera and you step off set, glad to be out of the hot lights that made your face feel like it was melting

and this is when you formally meet Hyungwon and Hoseok

they are both standing closely together, and turn to you as you walk their way

“Hey! It’s nice to meet you. I’m Wonho and this is Hyungwon. You were real good up there you know. You wouldn’t think this was your first professional shoot.”

your cheeks turn slightly red, thankfully hidden by your makeup

now, you don’t blush because an attractive man just smile your way

you are well aware of the relationship between the two men after all

it’s more because someone so talented just complimented you and told you “you did good”

thanking them, you then introduce yourself and start chatting to the two, quickly finding them just as personable as people say, Wonho being more open and Hyungwon quieter but really quite funny you find out

you take a few selfies with them to upload to your social media, and between all the back and forthing on set you carry on conversations with them

as it starts getting late and the shoot wraps up, you get given a few cards to modelling agencies due to your good work that day, to which you’ll tell them you’ll think on it

after getting changed out of the fancy gear and wiping the makeup of your face, you change back into your own clothes and go to leave, thanking any staff you pass for their hard work

on your way out, you meet up with Hyungwon and Wonho who are also getting ready to leave to their apartment

you all talk for a few more minutes, before Wonho suggests exchanging phone numbers

and of course you say yes

who would say no?

and that is the start of your friendship with the couple

you become close with the two quite quickly, finding them hilarious and ever so sweet

thankfully they aren’t big on pda and aren’t one of those overbearingly in love sort of couples

which you appreciate because brunch ‘dates’ become a thing for you three

(it’s the best way to get Hyungwon to wake up; bribe him with food)

when the photos from the shoot you did are released, they throw a mini party for you because of the amazing response people gave you even though it was your first time

you meet the rest of their friends there, including a couple of guys you remember as staff from the shoot

months pass, with you taking on a few modelling jobs now and then thanks to the guys encouragement

you start to become a lot more popular, your own mini fanbase growing

Wonho and Hyungwon become some of your best friends; and you three have fun teasing the other guys

over this time though, your friendship starts to become less defined, small gestures shared between you start to become less and less platonic

Hyungwon and Wonho had sat down and had a conversation between them

as it turns out, they had both started to like you as more than friends

and both of them, being pretty chill guys, accepted this very well

because they both knew that the fact that they both liked you didn’t mean they loved each other any less

and of course they now called you their best friend; so they knew you very well by now and as so they knew you would also be pretty chill about it if they decided to confess to you

and that whether or not you accepted the invitation didn’t matter because they would still be your good friends

one night, you were at their apartment watching a new drama, nothing out of the usual

Hyungwon is falling asleep on Hoseok’s shoulder and you are tucked into his other shoulder, legs thrown across the two boy’s laps

the leftover sushi from dinner had been put into the fridge already and the chocolate covered popcorn had been forgotten in it’s bowl on the floor

on the tv the two leads are doing the usual cliche kiss in the rain

when suddenly Wonho turns to look at you, and quicker than you can blink, leans in and places a small peck on your lips

now, this certainly wasn’t what you were expecting so you are caught of guard

i mean, not only did one of your best friends just kiss you, he did it while his boyfriend was literally right next to him

so you are panicking slightly, not knowing what to do

but then, you feel Hyungwon grab your hand and squeeze it slightly, a tired smile pulling at his lips

and you relax, returning the smile and you all go back to watching the drama

except that now Wonho can’t seem to keep his lips off of you and Hyungwon, continuously pressing pecks to both of your cheeks

of course they do actually ask if you want to be a part of their relationship, but it isn’t really needed but you just so naturally integrated into it

so well done! you’ve managed to snag two gods as boyfriends

and you are such a gorgeous trio

whenever you walk anywhere together, heads turn your way because you look like you have come straight from the runway (which is actually true sometimes, at least in Hyungwons case)

your instagram throuple photos are so aesthetic

but you also take the chance to meme the fuck out of your boyfriends now that you see them behind their model images even more, and their fans love you for it

so now you and the fans exchange memes of the two, to which you constantly use in the group chat that you three share

Hyungwon fully embraces this and even teams up with Changkyun in a meme war against you (to which you drag Minhyuk into as your partner)

you are their own personal cheerleader, and they are yours

if you aren’t busy, you accompany each other to any shoots or runways that you may have, totally hyping each other up

the amount of compliments that are given in this relationship is countless, especially from Wonho who will tell you both that you look stunning, 5 minutes after he last called you it

you and Hyungwon will also go to the gym with Wonho

and even if you are the biggest gym rat ever, nothing will get done while you are there because you two will be busy drooling over your boyfriend

which he loves because he works hard to keep up his fitness and appearance, and getting complimented on something you work hard for is always nice, no matter if it is good grades, an art piece, a song, your makeup or your body

(just make sure not to sexualise people yo, especially Shin Hoseok aka the cutest bean ever to exist)

when you move in with them, the amount of beauty stuff you have between the three of you is ridiculous

you also have a whole bedroom that has turned into a huge walk in closet

and the three of you often share clothes, which isn’t too hard because both of them like the baggy, oversized style

it’s mostly hoodies that are passed around, sometimes you end up not knowing whose it was in the first place

you fall in love with their bed, because Hyungwon made sure to splurge on it because “it’s where I spend most of my time, it has to be worth it”

their Tom and Jerry relationship is still a thing, only now they both whine to you and try to make you take a side, which you refuse and stay neutral and just tease the both of them which makes them team up on you usually

but you don’t mind because roast sessions are fun, especially when you all know the lines to not cross so can go all out

you three aren’t very big on pda, and prefer to link arms rather than hold hands when out and about

in private though kisses are abundant

overall, the three of you are happy and in love, and are one of the most loving, memeiest and aesthetic couples to exist

omg buckle up bc i have a lot to say on this matter & i literally saw this hate anon slander my sunshine this morning so i’m about to let off some steam ✋ ok so first of all: looks. like dude? i understand. when someone first gets into a group & they see someone in particular, they’ll be like “oh i wanna know who this is” like i think that’s perfectly normal. if wonho stood out to them, it’s fine. what’s not fine is if they start “stanning” wonho & they don’t even care to look past his abs & face to see the wholesome person he really is! tbh that’s another thing, i really don’t understand how they don’t get embarassed when someone asks them why they like wonho & they say “well he got a nice body 👅” …..like, yeah. we know. what else though? there is so much more to wonho than just his body. and they come up with something like “well he has a nice smile” like oi…..nvm. and can i rant about this whole “wonh*e” nonsense? like dude. my friends and i have jokingly called each other a h*e many times, it don’t hurt us. but here’s the thing: we never went overboard and we actually know each other vs wonho, who is an idol miles away & all we know is the personality given to us, so why would you call him that….? that’s like calling hyuna a h*e (which she isn’t, i love that woman to pieces) but if you did that, everyone would go nuts. so why not the same treatment for wonho? just bc he’s a guy, it’s ok? no. he literally just wants to do it for the fans bc he really loves us a lot & honestly i’m so happy he has that much confidence in his body to begin with & i just really don’t want to see that confidence fade away from him just bc fans call him these derogatory names, you know? like i don’t ever want to see him upset bc wonho is such a sweetheart to all the mbb’s & he would do anything for this fandom, you can just tell he loves us that much. like, you can’t fake that kind of affection. this morning i saw this anon go ‘i hate wonho the most, he’s the least talented’ or something ugly like that, and i was so ??? like, listen. i know i just began stanning mx a few months ago but istg 🙇 wonho is so talented & like we said, starship tends to produce very talented artists! starship is a professional music company and if they had felt wonho wasn’t talented enough, they wouldn’t have accepted him. everyone has their own opinion but i really believe there’s thin line between hate & an opinion. tbh saying you hate an idol is really unnecessary? like i really don’t care if someone wants to tell me “you’re thinking too much about this, he’s just an idol” like yes, he is. but thinking like that gives me the impression that 1) you don’t really care at all. 2) you’re narrow-minded. and 3) you put these idols on a pedestal when, in fact, they are humans just like the rest of us. they have feelings & it hurts me to think that if wonho (or anyone in mx) were to hear these thoughts, it would just hurt a lot bc like i mentioned before, it’s obvious that he loves us very much & he has such a soft heart, you know? there’s so much more i’d like to say here, mss, and i can’t tell you how kind of worked up i am bc personally, i’m really happy that i chose wonho as my bias and although i just began stanning, i’m really excited to explore the mbb world & learn more about this group and mx deserves so much & so it makes me disgusted that there are actually people who do not want to see anything but their abs. ugh tbh i just want to list reasons!! links!! facts!! on why you should love these kids for more than their abs!! but these ppl aren’t ever going to listen //: so i’m gonna end off here bc i think you’ve read too much LOL so yeah, @anyone who sees wonho as just a sexy gamepiece in the kpop industry….please do not interact with me & drop off the face of the earth & feel free to come back when you are ready to appreciate the blessing that is lee (shin) hoseok 😊 (and i’m really sorry if this wasn’t calm at all but i really just can’t.)

Look I know you love them but

If the only things that we can come up with are “bear”, “daddy”, “awkward” and “big muscles” whenever we think about Shownu, we’re not looking hard enough.

If the only things we can come up with are “sexy”, “ramyeon lover” or “hot big brother bunny” whenever we think about Wonho, we’re not looking hard enough.

If the only things we can come up with are “girly”, “scrawny”, “way too hyper” or “crazy” whenever we think about Minhyuk, we’re not looking hard enough.

If the only things we can come up with are “mommy”, “hamster”, “man with a lisp”, “sassy” or any equivalent of a word “small/short” whenever we think about Kihyun, we’re not looking hard enough.

If every small interaction between particular members is somehow romantic/sexual inside our head, and the reason we’re shipping them is because to us, they’re somehow each others’ opposites (tiny/huge, quiet/super social) we’re not looking hard enough. If we decide they must be gays because of this and that factor in their behavior, we’re not looking hard enough.

They’re indeed hired idols who want to impress us by their looks, but they’re also artists who want us to focus on their performance. They’re indeed hired actors to give us content we want to see, but they’re also real people who work their asses off and give all their time to us, even though they might just as well do something else.

Give them more credit. Don’t stay on this half-assed level. Dig deeper if you want to really respect them. And I know you do, because you’re their fan and you love them. 

When we tag or list the personality/appearance traits of Monsta X members with each post we make, if 90% of that content is based on jokes, memes and stereotypes MX members or fans once created to recognize the members better, we’re not giving them enough space. We’re not looking deep enough to see what else is in there. We’re shrinking them into quotes and jokes, even though they are very much real, breathing people with complex, changing personalities. And since we don’t know them personally, we must work even harder to spread diverse narrative about them. 

Whenever we’re listing these features, we’re also comparing them to each other. Whenever we call Kihyun or Minhyuk with feminine/”emasculated” terms, we’re also implying that the other members are much more masculine than them, and no matter how hard we’d like them to embrace such identities, we don’t actually know their personal thoughts about it. We should know by now, though, that in Korean idol industry, traditionally viewed masculinity is a thing many idols strive for, and if we look hard enough, we can see moments where both members have been uncomfortable after being referred to as “tiny” or “cutie”. We also aren’t technically just pointing out that there’s a difference in their appearance, we make it sound it’s something super “cute” and extraordinary, even though that just emphasizes the differences in an unhealthy way. When you give too much attention to Hyungwon’s legs, you’re implying there’s something wrong with Kihyun’s legs. When you give too much attention to Wonho’s chest, you’re implying there’s something wrong with Changkyun’s chest. When you pay too much attention to Kihyun being tiny, he thinks that’s all (aside from his singing) there’s to see in him. 

Whenever we’re calling some members as parents and the others as children, we’re not only defining what kind of behavior is considered childish/mother-like and what’s not (even though by definition, parenthood is mostly about custodial relationship with no necessary connotations), we’re also ignoring half of the interaction that’s completely unfitting for this setting and just continue to pay attention to what fits into our narrative. Changkyun acting like a caring friend equal to his older members? Nah, he’s a maknae, he can’t really break out of his baby boy role. Kihyun not giving a fuck about the other members? It’s not about him being a normal young man who’s tired of the tight schedule, it’s about him being a “mean hamster mom”. 

Whenever we’re giving extra attention to these stereotypes and thus constantly reinforcing them, we’re also either making certain features more valuable than others, or then blatantly fetishizing things these idols KNOW aren’t empowering to them. A lisp shouldn’t have connotations, for example, but we do know they have been linked to gays (in a negative manner), childish/girly behavior and sillyness in general. Just watch Minhyuk act a girl in a Kpop Planet radio show in 2015, and you’ll see Kihyun asking him since when he had had a lisp. Minhyuk chose to have it, because it apparently made him sound more girly. Us constantly pointing out Wonho’s and Kihyun’s lisps is not doing a favor to them even if we call it cute - it just gives them extra attention to features we shouldn’t even notice. But of course we do, because it’s not conventionally attractive and it’s not traditionally masculine.

If we look hard enough, we can also see that 80% of the times they are given nicknames or stereotypical features, that’s actually editors, translators and MCs at work, not the members themselves. That’s called marketing, and since they still keep pushing those stereotypes long after they were first mentioned as a passing joke, it means we as fans are accepting them. 

Jokes are jokes, but they’re not definitions. Fics and fanservice are fics and fanservice, but they’re not the whole picture. 

If we give chance to different narratives, we’re going to see more of them. We can choose to reinforce those that change them into caricatures, or then we can give space for multiple narratives. They will keep doing whatever they think we want to see, but that’s not necessarily the things they wanted to show us in the first place. It’s psychologically proven that if you assume that someone is like something, it’s a prediction fulfilling itself and they will start acting more and more like that, in good and bad. However, if you are ready to broaden your viewpoint and try to learn what else is there, they’ll show more of themselves too. It will let you see more genuine interaction, but also it lets them express themselves in a way THEY wanted, not just the way imaginary audience wanted it. With imaginary audience I mean the people the editors, directors and coordinators are picturing in front of the MX group. It’s not real audience, just their expectations based on the experience they have of us. We can change their expectations, but first we must stop accepting the over-simplifying ideas they are feeding us and start demanding more.

Here’s some answers to questions you might have:

1) Can’t we have fun at all? It’s just innocent joking. 

It’s less about what jokes you tell and more about how many times you tell them. If this stereotyping content makes more than half of the discourse we have in the fandom, it’s having too much space, because it alters the way we think about them and how they think about themselves. It’s also about the implications. Giving Shownu a dad nickname is in itself completely innocent and is not harming him (I mean, a masculine person with father-like features, isn’t that ideal?), but when we make Kihyun the mom, we’re comparing them to each other and deciding which actions they take are traditionally feminine / a part of straight-couple-dynamic and which are not, even though they are both men and haven’t expressed they want to present themselves as something else. It’s a part of heteronormative discourse to assume certain actions/looks are inherently feminine.

2) They’re not going to see what I post here in Tumblr.

Most likely not, but the other fans do. They’re going to reconsider their thoughts about each idol, and some of them are for real going to see MX members in real life. And even if not, some of them are young, some of them very much premature - your way of speaking about these idols DOES affect on how they view the world afterwards. If you sexualize/romanticize/fetishize or characterize them in an unhealthy way, some people are going to think it’s okay. If you know them better than just that, show it. The fact that they’re idols and exist to look pretty and appealing for you doesn’t change the fact that they’re real people, not anime characters.

3) They’re joking about animal nicknames / sexy bodies / mom-dad -relationships themselves.

Yes, but they do know each other in real life and they know where the limit goes. You do not. It’s a different thing to laugh about something they said once, than make it completely canon like there’s nothing else to see in that person other than the nickname he was once given. Also it’s not completely impossible that the members wrong their friends, too. In Monsta X’s case, the members have been quite respectful towards each other, but it has definitely happened in some other groups. Idols have bullied their group members because of their weight/skin color/jaw shape/whatever factor, and it was tolerated by fans because “hey, they’re friends”, it’s “Korean culture”, their “appearance is the most important thing anyway” and “we agree with them haha”. 

4) This/something similar is happening in other groups/fandoms too, though?

Yes, that’s true, and it’s not less of a problem there either. I’m pointing this out because Monsta X is important to me right now. I think all groups are being treated more or less the same, maybe because of the young audience or some cultural aspects or whatever. I still want to be one of those people who are changing this. We need to demand more representation, genuine personalities, diverse narrative, everything. In the end, it doesn’t only help the idols themselves, but us too. So if you are a fan of several groups, it definitely does no harm to try and apply this to whatever tropes/age-old jokes they have in other fandoms as well. 

5) Why do you care so much?

 Because I’ve been following kpop and other parts of Korean culture for 10 years approximately, and I’m fed up with the fact how idols are treated, exploited, sexualized, idolized etc etc. in the industry. Beautiful, charismatic and hard-working idols in itself shouldn’t equal mistreatment, oppression or manufactured clone culture. We can and we should want more than just that. I know kpop industry in and of itself is oppressive, belittling, over-competitive, sexist, fatshaming, ableist, racist etc., but we as fans can be there to change at least some of it. One of the easiest steps would be ceasing to treat them as memes/jokes/quotes/three-point personality lists who always act the same. Idk.

Also even if we don’t have such huge world-changing goals in mind, I have to say I wouldn’t like it if I was given an animal nickname or just one descriptive factor based on something arbitrary on my body/face/personality and then literally everything I ever did was somehow reflected in that. I have a friend who was called a basketball player because she was so tall. I have another friend whose face reminded some people of a horse, so then she was a horse. Shocking, at first time she heard it, funny the second, third and fourth times, not funny anymore after that. I know several friends who were “sluts” just because they had big breasts and most likely big cleavage. I know several men who were “gays” just because of how they walked or talked. You know them, too. You know the story. You know what I’m talking about.

People are not animals, people don’t have just one or two roles among their friends, people are not just their bodies or their voices. So. Please. Challenge the ways you talk, think and write about them. Every time you make a moodboard/list/member reaction/fic/incorrect quote etc., you’re also creating fanfiction, you’re also either reinforcing old ideas or reimagining new ones. Choose your words wisely, think twice. I have to do the same, I can’t talk myself out of it, either. It’s not an easy process.

I love Monsta X and I know you all do, too. And jokes are fun, sometimes. Fics/scenarios are fun to read and write, too, and they don’t have to be truthful to the members’ personalities. But real Monsta X members are not characters. They’re not animal stickers with two-word personalities attached to them. They’re not memes, nor just different body types, one for everyones’ taste. Jooheon, Changkyun, Hoseok, Hyunwoo, Kihyun, Minhyuk and Hyungwon are lovely people full of colourful details, some of them changing, some of them contradicting each other, some of them positive, some of them negative. And even if we will never see it all, it doesn’t serve them right to settle down with less, instead of fighting through our own prejudices and assumptions and try to see more. They deserve it. So... let’s be careful, let’s be respectful and let’s end those stereotypes that are or might be harmful to the members. Our entitlement to laugh at something is never more important as someone’s right to have good, diverse representation.

MONSTA X ‘Beautiful’ Comeback Review

It has been three weeks that MONSTA X finally released their first studio album and unfortunately the promotions are almost over. The Clan Part 2.5, which is the final chapter in this series, is a very refreshing and colorful album. Their title track, Beautiful, brings a new style to MONSTA X where they drop the heavy and powerful concept, just like their coats, and instead, they show their sensitive and irresistible sides even more. There are many great symbols and creativity in this comeback, which I would like to break down, so keep on reading if you are interested!

MUSIC VIDEO Although I was waiting for a music video that follows a similar plot line and setting as All In and Fighter, this time we got something more aesthetic and less narrative like video. Though, if you want to search for connections to the whole Clan concept, you can easily find them especially in the symbol of the blue flower. I love the music video because it is true to the whole Beautiful concept as the creators did so many artistic choices. The cinematography is incredible with the vivid colors but then with the black and white shots as well. Each of the members have their own settings and symbols, which I really liked. I think we can agree that again Jooheon is in the center of power especially in the shot where he is walking up and down on a hallway where the members are behind closed doors, but then they join him. This can be a connection back to the whole Clan concept and we could go more in depth, but I just mainly wanted to highlight the technical points of the video. I also enjoyed the shots where they were dancing the choreography of Beautiful and they were in a big open space on a small platform. In different shots, the colors changed and even the black and white scenes had different tones. I could watch this music video forever because every time I discover something new. 

BEAUTIFUL TITLE TRACK  Most of their title track songs for MONSTA X were a bit heavier in sound and in rap, especially in choreography where they showed their strength and brought a powerful performance. However, Beautiful has more of a sensible side regardless of the lit rap parts from Jooheon and I.M. 

The line distribution seems fair at this time, as Hyungwon (who got the least lines in almost every comeback) had a fair amount of share in singing. Besides he also became sort of the center and the symbol of this comeback. It is also said that Shownu actually sacrificed some of his lines for Hyungwon, which is a very leader-like thing to do and I was impressed when I read about that. What I also really like is how Minhyuk gets the ‘so beautiful’ part as later in the performance we can see that he gets an important center role during those parts. I actually liked the lyrics and this whole symbolism with the rose. But as there is a big part of the rose in the lyrics and even in the choreography, to me that was lacking in the overall music video and in the whole Clan concept. If that blue flower would be more like a rose or if they would have just made this comeback separate from the Clan series, then it would make more sense and would have been perfect. But this is only a side note from my critical and artistic self, so it doesn’t take away anything from the overall comeback. 

STAGE PERFORMANCE  I was probably the most impressed with the choreography for Beautiful. There are so many clever elements to it that when I saw it for the first time I was like ‘hell yeah!’. Some of my favorite parts from the choreo is when Kihyun has a center role while singing and when it’s Wonho’s turn he sort of passes onto him the role of a center dancer. (I mean I love Kiho in general… ) But what I liked the most is how they dance with their coats and when they get into that sort of V formation, first Minhyuk throws his coat in the audience (yeah boy) and then the others pass their coats back to each other while the last two throws them away. I think that is very creative in the choreo and makes it so much more exciting. 

Then the end pose is very clever too when Hyungwon’s two hands and I.M’s one hand creates a rose. But first I didn’t know how Hyungwon got three hands so I had to replay that part haha. I really like their stages as it’s clean and simple, but their outfits bring a nice color in the performance.

I also just want to mention I love how they shared a few weeks with GOT7 so we could see their interactions, like when they had a moment together at the monitoring of Show! Music Core. I live for GOT7 x MONSTA X friendship, and I wish that there weren’t some people in each fandoms who make it harder to be peaceful and to show an example to other fandoms. 

ALBUM + ACOUSTIC VERSION

I truly love this album so much. First I was outraged because of the three different versions and how we need to buy more albums in one version just so the transparent photocards can make sense, but overall I really like the album design. I own the Beside version because I just HAD TO get those couple pictures. I mean I live for mom and dad Showki and hands down Minhyuk and Hyungwon make one hell of a visual (and kinky) couple. I was even more ecstatic when I got Jooheon in the regular photocard version, who was my first MONSTA X bias and he is still really high up on the list of biases haha. 

As of the songs, my top 5+1 bonus looks like this:

1. Need U 2. Miss You 3. Beautiful 4. All I Do 5. 5:14 (Last Page) + I’ll Be There

(Yes, as you can see I’m more of the calmer romantic type lol)

I want to especially mention Wonho who worked a lot on this album as he contributed in both Last Page and I’ll Be There. In I’ll Be There he helped all in with the lyrics, composing, and arranging. I’m really proud of him and I’m sure this is just the beginning and in the future, he will work even more on his own songs that will make it to their albums! 

Also, let’s not forget about Beautiful acoustic version that made a total twist in the whole meaning of the song and we even saw the boys cry, especially Wonho. I don’t know whose idea was that, but that person surely wanted to see heartbroken Monbebes crying all over the internet. Way to hurt innocent hearts!

But we got many great things as the boys appeared on Weekly Idol, and a day ago they were guests on After School Club. They also had a cute pajama party episode in the New Yang Nam Show. They also gifted us with video chat calls on V-Live and aesthetic pictures both on Twitter and on the Fancafe. MONSTA X boys surely know how to do fanservice well and show love for the fans.

STREAMING AND WINNING - MONBEBE DON’T BE SAD Monbebes were very positive that this comeback will bring the greatly anticipated first win for MONSTA X. Myself too was very looking forward to it and although we haven’t achieved the win yet, the boys got to break new personal records. To them, even the nomination on music shows was enough, but we know that they deserve so much more.

I procrastinated a lot on watching No Mercy because as my friend said it is such an emotional roller coaster, I was afraid to go through it. But I still did by the time they started the promotions. Watching them go through all those struggles in the show and so many humiliations and heartbreak at some times, I got a lot more motivated on helping them win their first award. I think we started to work great well together and it seems like the fandom grew bigger with this comeback. I know we all love our boys and we want the best for them, but it seems like we still need a little more time and a bit bigger fandom to make this work. The boys know we work hard and the moment they will get their first win, it will be a lot more meaningful achievement in their lives as they waited so long for it.

So don’t be discouraged Monbebes. Even our Kihyunie said so that we shouldn’t be. If this comeback won’t bring the win for them, I’m sure at least this year they will get it. Beautiful promotion was a great beginning for getting even more recognition and showing another side of MONSTA X. From here, things will only get better!

And as of today happy #700DaysWithMonstaX and the good news is that the boys finally got personal phones so who is ready for individual SNS, especially Instagram accounts? ME ME ME

(bald, outer shirt that says ‘sinner’ on the back, whoever u are) you are my new bias i have left changkyun and lowkeyclosetbiasminhyuk and have decided to be biased with you instead you’re the tru mvp. like, i think i would have actually died lmao it was so fucking hot. my eyeliner literally melted off my face. also shoutout to the girls dancing in the lot. they were hecka talented and incredibly beautiful and i want to marry all of them.-hello all so what i have learned from this concert is that i may be a minhyuk bias i don’t know what happened but i’m just here to tell you that-minhyuk-is-an-angel-from-heaven-shownu literally said, as his intro, “hello ladies and gentlemen” #same-speakin of awk mh was so cute he was like “nice to meet you dallas i’m minhyuk” and he did these little curt waves to everyone (those awk little waves he does idk how to explain he’s so cute osmfa)-changkyun spoke so much english and he quite literally ruined me i don’t think i’m alive anymore-his voice-his personality-his everhting-he’s just-cries-while talking about who personifies “beautiful” the most, wh stepped up and ck was like “go back to your seat please” (#me)-right after ^ jh goes “make some noise for his muscles”-”his muscles is (are) beautiful”-sn: ”hyungwon is little bit sick. but he now…very…better….now…. i.m pls” (i love his plea for help–you’re doing gr8 babe) / ck: “uh, he’s getting better so you don’t have to worry about him, okay guys?”-wh pushing everyone and then they all started like…jump kicking….and roundhouse..kicking….???-mh was like “the king of aegyo is–???” and mbb were screamin out jooheon but then kihyun highkey threw him into the pit and was like “minhyuk!” so there’s that-mh’s “oh my god~” that was supposed to be an imitation of dallas mbbs haha rip-ck’s “this concert name is beautiful and you guys are so beautiful so beautiful girls~~ all over the world~~“-mh’s “namja aegyo” that used kh-mh was like “for example…/pats kh/ man”-ck was like, lmao sassy bean he is, “ofc he’s a man, ofc. he’s a man. he really is!”-for the namjaegyo mh just walked up to kh, “hi guys,” put his arm on his shoulder and goes: “you are….mine” /pushes hi away lightly/ and then kh is just like staring out at us like in the office when they stare at the camera and they’re just like wtf yea that was kh-ck highkey fooling the entire fucking audience and was like “lol shownu is in the back!!! in the audience!!!” but he wasn’t fuckin troll ass piece of shit i love him-jh forcing kh into an english ver of gwiyomi and he was the cutest thing on the planet-btw-kihyun-is-tiny.-tiny-he is smol please protect him at all costs-kh was singing a “romantic song” for us and the rest of the members just like highkey started walking away lmao-i would fight anyone to protect him-MINHYUK’S LITTLE “THANK YOU THANK YOU” “I LOVE YOU” AND “OK” NEAR THE END DESTROYED ME PHYSICALLY EMOTIONALLY MENTALLY HE IS THE CUTEST THING ON THIS PLANET I AM DEAD-from zero is a blessing from the gods above-wonho is actually the cutest-????-his giggles are the cutest thing-he played around the most and he was just a ray of sunshine and hope and joy and everything good in the world he’s so adorable-i forgot what song but his mic kind of died and he noticed and when it came back on he just kinda fell into giggles and iT HURT ME-I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW ADORABLE HE IS-everything he did was just so cute-he’s also hecka cheesy-but then he tryna be nekkid make up ur m ind-after mh did aegyo wh was like “if we talkin romantics it’s mh” and mh was like (in english) “i’m done, i’m done) lmao-hi also jh&kh’s duet stage actually ruined me-like-i was close to tears-and also-i was speechless-chANGKYUN IN THAT WHITE SHIRT AND MINT PANTS FUCK HE LOOKED GOOD-sn/wh/mh/ck making fun of kh’s rapping from the duet-wh kept saying “it’s a joke~” after everything he said smh-wonho asked if we ate dinner yet and we said no and he was like what??? no???? and we were like no and then he asked if we came from somewhere far and we screamed yes and he was like “does anyone live further than i do” lmao he got us-“we, monsta x, will fight for you forever” way to ruin my life ck-wh tryna pour water on ck’s head-jooheon’s everything-jooheon is everything and more-jooheon is indescribable i can’t-his voice when he said “lemme see ur aegyo” ogsg-wh threw a sweat towel out in the crowd and at the end mh did the same thing and got a reaction and kh looked at him like wtf why did they scream and he kinda just explained it to him, on stage, in the middle of a performance, and kh’s lines were next, and honestly it was so, fucking, cute, omg-changkyun told us “concentrate, concentrate…shhhh” and i–-chANGKYUn WAS LIKE “THE FRONT OF MY BABIES” LIKE EXCUSE ME?!?! (referring to the mbbs at the front)-shownu is as awkward a grandpa dad irl as he is in varities and vlives-and i love it-he’s perfect-he’s honestly so adorable-idk if anyone has a video of it yet but like changkyun’s voice when he was like “it was so romantic” i cried-at the end when they bowed they did this little cute thing where they all held hands and moved around the stage in a line like elementary school kids it was ridiculously cute-honestly none of this is in order i haven’t slept in 48 hours i had to drive 8 hours it’s just-the tapes were so cute oml but you can just find those online it’s the same for all the concerts but like let me tell you hyungwon looked soOOoOof ucking good also that one part where he’s like “man is it just me or do i look good today” and mh goes “what are you talking about you look good everyday” and i was like oh ok-i really missed hyungwon tbh we love you come to dallas next time bb-tihs is all i can remember i’m dyingas for whether it was more or less “lit” as a b.a.p concert–idk. i think mx and b.a.p have completely different dynamics that make them fun to watch. b.a.p’s concerts are pretty much known for being really well thought out and really immersive. they have a lot of shit going on on stage lmao and it’s like an Artistic Masterpiece to watch tbh. b.a.p’s performances are 100% spot on what is a backup track we only sing live 500% performance based the entire stage is used with 3204982304924 backup dancers if needed, basically, b.a.p are extra as fuck (and i love it). that said, it doesn’t really make me think it’s particularly better than monsta x’s. because b.a.p’s concerts are very, very performance based, the talk sessions are usually shorter and less interactive unless it’s an event session (it makes sense when you integrate the b.a.p personalities and group dynamics into it tbh), but monsta x had a lot of little breaks to talk and make the concert a lot of fun. monsta x take the time to play around with each other and stuff during the talks whilst b.a.p does it during the performances where they don’t have as much choreo; in exchange, monsta x don’t really stray from the main choreo (except for a few cute things). i don’t know if i’m explaining this well bc it’s like literally 6am and i got home an horu ago and i haven’t slept in sooooOoo long but basically monsta x and b.a.p have different concert styles and i think both are really awesome. also!! monsta x uses the whole stage (not naming group names but one group i went to see didn’t use the whole stage and only took up like 1/3rd of it for the entire time and it really bothered me bc it looked awkward)!!! and, similar to b.a.p, they sound a million times better live. like. i can’t. plus, again, like b.a.p, they’re far more beautiful than you think. you’ll go in thinkin’ you know what they look like but girl no. no camera can truly portray the etherealness of these members, b.a.p or monsta x. definitely go to an mx concert in your lifetime you won’t regret it. the members are so fun and enjoyable and their performance skills are great and i love all of them sm and they’re perfect. their concert style may not be the same as b.a.p’s but i promise you’ll def enjoy a mx concert ;v;
