My partner commissioned @mayomkun for my Zagreus Mortal AU fanfic's 3rd anniversary (wasting beats of this heart of mine) last October! I kept forgetting to post it here, but I love the piece so so much, from the little skull on Callisto's head to Zagreus' chlamys. 💞💞💞

Query: How is it that despite having no concept of time, each of Zagreus's escapes just so happens to coincide with the dawn?
Answer: Nyx wants to watch the boss battle regardless of what time it is and will cover the world in darkness to do it, but also wants to be home before Hades gets there
Answer: Zagreus actually stays on the cliff until sunrise hits every time, which explains why sometimes he dies much faster on the surface than others
Answer: Helios has a massive crush on him.

I already imagined Leander with a British accent, but after learning he's actually Highborn, I'm now thinking about Zagreus from the Hades game! Because I remember seeing a comment on how Zagreus says "mate" in a way that sounds too posh, like a rich kid trying to be friendly and casual, but you can just hear their wealthy upbringing. And that reminds me of Leander.

Send help, it's 3 AM and I cannot sleep because the concept of Nico being Zagreus—not the Hades character, the myth, although still from the version where he's Hades and Persephone's son rather than the version where he's a prior incarnation of Dionysus—reborn has entered my head and decided to set up shop for the foreseeable future. It actually feels incredibly fitting from what I know about the myth of Zagreus (which is admittedly not a lot) and aspects of the books like Nico's unique connections with both Dionysus and Hades in specific and the gods in general (and possibly Bob if we do some mix-and-matching of the myths, since Dionysus-Zagreus was dismembered and partially eaten by Titans on account of the Greek myths being A Time) and the whole "When the time comes you have to tell Will the truth about who you are" thing in TSatS that goes all sorts of nowhere. I don't know, obviously I don't think it's what Rick intended but I do think it could very easily fit into the canon of the books!
...Or possibly I'm just sleep deprived. Did I mention it's 3 AM?

My kneejerk response to sequel announcements isn’t normally “fear” but Hades was simply that fucking good. Don’t misunderstand me. Supergiant is a great studio and greek mythology is perfectly suited to the task of story expansion and this is a game I'm excited to see them make. But sweet holy FUCK just imagine trying to follow that act. I’m getting secondhand performance anxiety just thinking about it.
(How could the core gameplay loop possibly be any better suited to the narrative? Will it feel derivative? Are the 40000 people who reblogged that “Zagreus is the character ever” post going to like the new protagonist? Me included? What about-)

Chapter 29: The Gods of the Dead
The high-vaulted halls of the House were quiet when Megaera returned from her shift. She cast a glance towards the throne, and, upon seeing it empty, sighed. Lord Hades had returned a few times since their last all-hands meeting, but rarely for long, and the paperwork on his desk had piled up into a small mountain. Nyx was not in her usual niche as well and, with its two pillars gone, the House had sunken into a languorous and subdued mood.
After tossing a doleful Cerberus a new bone, Megaera headed towards the entrance of the hall.

imma be that mean bitch and propose this. i hc that zag’s blood can prolonge someone’s life if consumed, so what if he ended up using his blood to try and save someone dear to him, but it’s just such a selfish thing of him to care, to love someone so deeply that the thought of losing them would completely shatter him? like can u imagine the sheer desperation and need in his voice to practically beg the other to accept his blood so he can p much heal / save them but they refuse it ??

Dionysus did not manage to vault himself from the half mortal son of Zeus to a god of the pantheon without learning one very valuable skill.
How to keep his mouth shut.
When news of strange fruits extending the lives of those that at them started circulating, Demeter came to him first. A reasonable assumption, considering all the things he can enchant grapes to do, but the enchantment is different enough from his own powers that he'd managed to convince her he had nothing to do with it.
All of his vines among the mortals had withered. His dryads are sleeping. He can grant the temporary passion of madness to stave off the cold, but that leaves them weaker and hungrier than they were before.
He's tried to move against Demeter, to preserve his own power, to keep the death toll of her grief from destroying the mortal plane.
He's failed.
The only ones that possibly could are Zeus and Hera, but what happens off Olympus isn't their concern. All mortals die, after all.
Plus their own worship hasn't been that badly affected, as king and queen of the gods their blessings and favor reign supreme and the mortals don't dare snub them. If it had been, maybe they'd make more than a token effort of reigning Demeter in.
The only one that has managed to slow the pace of winter is the nameless god known as Prince, who's fruits and gardens and followers unfurl across the icy land like a leaf pushing through the earth to herald in spring.
Dionysus is sorry about Persephone. But forcing spring to die with it's goddess makes no sense. The seasons predate them all and going against the cycles of nature, even as the goddess of it, isn't sustainable or logical or fair.
Not that Demeter has ever claimed to be any of those things.
Dionysus doesn't know if everyone really doesn't know who Prince is, or if they're all playing dumb like he is.
It's not like Demeter could get to him, after all.
He's already dead.
