Chapter 29: The Gods of the Dead
The high-vaulted halls of the House were quiet when Megaera returned from her shift. She cast a glance towards the throne, and, upon seeing it empty, sighed. Lord Hades had returned a few times since their last all-hands meeting, but rarely for long, and the paperwork on his desk had piled up into a small mountain. Nyx was not in her usual niche as well and, with its two pillars gone, the House had sunken into a languorous and subdued mood.  After tossing a doleful Cerberus a new bone, Megaera headed towards the entrance of the hall.

WIP Wednesday
Starting my replay of Hades, I scribbled down bits of a conversation between Patroclus and Achilles. Having written out the conversation, I am now toying with writing the AU that Achilles has imagined here.
~
“Did the river never tempt you?” Achilles asks. Patroclus looks up at him, but his face reveals no answer. “Truth be told, before Zagreus came to me and told me you asked about me, I had thought you would have purged me from your memories. It was… it made it easier to while away the hours in the House.”
“It crossed my mind,” Patroclus says. He turns to the Lethe that is frothing by them, and Achilles follows his gaze. It is so merry and lively for a river that runs through the Underworld, taking away the bitter memories of mortality. Even knowing what it does, Achilles finds himself wanting to dip his hands into it and feel its cool waters.
“I think you’re far stronger than I am, Pat. If things had gone as Lord Hades and the Fates had planned and I was here in Elysium and you in Asphodel, I think once I realized you weren’t here, I would have drunk my fill of the Lethe. I wouldn’t have lasted a day or night.”
He does not want to know who he would have become without Patroclus’s voice in his head urging him to take the wiser path. No better than the exalted Zagreus fights, mindless, wanting for nothing but violence. He was accused of that while living, of loving war and killing more than any other man, of having a homicidal heart. If not for Patroclus, perhaps those words would ring true, and he would not know better to know the shame of it.
He is pulled out of his mulling by Patroclus’s soft voice. “Do you think it would work?”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you think if you erased me from your memory, that you wouldn’t feel the heartache anymore? I pondered this for ages as I stared at this river. You are such a bigger part of me than just memories. You were my heart, ripped from my chest. Forgetting about a wound does not heal it. I think I still would have been waiting for you, but I wouldn’t know why anymore.”

DRAWTOBER #19 - wasting beats of this heart of mine by @argetcross
“You sound like a mortal.” She said, with the faint glimmer of amusement in her eyes. Zagreus chortled too, but then fell silent. Nyx gave him a knowing look. “What is it, my child?” “You said the curse is tied into my godhood, right? What if…” The words tasted unnatural in his mouth, a blasphemy before they could even take shape in the air. Zagreus coughed them out regardless. “What if I could shed my divinity? What if I became a mortal?” -- Or, despite being a god, Zagreus keeps running out of time. A "Zagreus Becomes Mortal" AU.
holy SHIT this fic!!! this fic!!!! it has a fantastic premise - what if when Zagreus got to the surface, Persephone wasn't just right there within his limited reach? - and the plot is so incredible, it's honestly like reading a whole new greek epic! Zagreus is on one larger quest but on the way he gets caught up in lots of small adventures and meets many familiar faces from greek myth, including some new gods and goddesses not found in the game. all of the new characters are just fantastic and really hold their own in the story, and it's so... simultaneously funny and tragic watching Thanatos trailing Zagreus like "I feel perfectly normal emotions about you, human, do not question my involvement 😳". I really cannot recommend this fic enough if you enjoy reading adventures and want more Hades-verse content, and I am SO freakin excited to see where this goes and how it resolves!

It's the one year anniversary of me posting recs! How time flies!! So in honor of the day, another edition of the first list I ever published!
Hades Fic Recs
keepsakes hold power by dustandstatic - Rated E
To the naked eye they look no different from ordinary trinkets, lucky charms perhaps, simple objects the dead often keep on them in the grave. Maybe they are. Maybe it’s Zagreus that makes them hold power. (concept: god's keepsakes and blessings change zagreus' appearance and behavior during an escape. thanatos takes notice.)
Again and Again by SailorFish - Rated T
Achilles stood up. He had been expecting the stranger since Megaera had stalked past him, elegant despite the anger and blood dripping from her. An AU where Zagreus was raised by Demeter and ends up fighting his way through the Underworld regardless - just in the opposite direction. Guarding the entrance out is the terrifying monster Cerberus, but guarding the entrance in is Achilles, best of Greeks. And he has strict orders not to let anyone in.
The Great Beyond by vinetini - Rated T
Zagreus makes a possibly stupid, definitely reckless deal with Chaos but has to leave his physical form behind to explore the chaotic realm beyond. His body washes up in the House of Hades, completely lifeless. Whoops.
in the half light by harukatenoh - Rated T
You don't die over and over again without internalizing some shit, even if you are a god.
death and i by storyandsong - Rated T
He's late, he realizes. There's a lot of blood here, he realizes a moment later. Not the blackened stains of shades temporarily banished, but the dark-red and glistening of mortal blood, spattered in desperate arcs across the grass, staining the water where the River Lethe pools. Across the chamber, it shifts to a trail of blood, the imprint of bare footprints burned into the darkening liquid. There. There, slumped with his back against a green-glowing infernal trove, an ethereal sword buried in his chest, a pool of blood slowly spreading beneath him—Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld, his warmth and light so faded that Thanatos didn't even realize he was still in the chamber.
There Will Be A Dawn by julomaiboulomai - Rated T
In the first days of Zagreus's tutelage, Achilles is still full of wrath more than anything. His bitterness toward the gods is untempered, and before him stands one of their scions, vulnerable and yet immortal, able to take however much he chooses to dish out. (Or, perhaps, not so immortal after all. And in the end, very vulnerable indeed.)
you're fire, but sweet by eggio - Rated T
Thanatos always remembers. How Zagreus’s touch is so warm against his skin, how just the brush of his fingertips over the flesh of his arm ignites his senses. He knows himself to be the opposite: cold, in more ways than one. There’s no warmth in his own arms, his fingers more like the ice Zagreus is just barely now experiencing. He’s cold, in the silence that he finds comfort in and how the way Zag so easily smiles isn’t something just as easy to him. And that he’s selfish; Thanatos wants everything that Zagreus is, every piece of him.
beasts and men by scatteringmyashes - Rated T
Patroclus has no interest in the arena, though he's been challenged many times. His fighting days are over and that is fine with him. The other occupants of Elysium are intent on changing that. Or: Five Times Patroclus Was Challenged And The One Time Someone Accepted
found a way to rise by renquise - Rated T
The river is high again. It laps up against the greaves of the statues in this chamber this time, the long grasses submerged and waving gently in the hazy waters. Last it took this chamber, it only rose to the top of the pedestals. He's learned to see the signs of when the river is about to rush out of its banks to take the chambers: the river grows wilder and the ground becomes soft and damp, water rising up between his toes and hissing into steam where it meets his feet. He’ll be glad when the water recedes again. — Or, the one with Lethe-induced amnesia.
embers by renquise - Rated M
Thanatos runs his fingers over the line of Zagreus's calf where flickers of flame recede into his skin, then pushes into the muscle with a firm touch. Zagreus jolts under his hands. “Ahh, how did you know that my legs are sore from all that running?” Zagreus laughs, a little breathless.

I already have a self insert goddess for Hades but I'm kind of in love with this new human AU...thing I've been thinking of, very loosely inspired by a fic I read - which is, what if Cici frickin' died and was a shade. and just kinda rolls up into the House of Hades like (Dan Avidan in the "mark zuckerberg" bit voice) "I'm very tired" gkshfkg. I dunno if her name will actually be Cici, but that's what I'll call her right now for the sake of simplicity.
so here's the story I have for her so far (read: kinda bullshitting it as I go fjshf) sorry it's long -u-;;
TL;DR: tired mortal girl is visited regularly by Hypnos in her dreams to help her sleep, and becomes his favorite. Dies young in her sleep, reunites with him in the House of Hades as a shade, strings get pulled by Zagreus and now (bill wurtz voice) that's just where she lives.
In life, she was an all around normal but very nice human. She spent a lot of time doing things for others around her so they were happy and content, even in the dead of night - so much that she eventually started to neglect her own wellbeing without realizing it.
During one such sleepless night, where she's so exhausted but fighting to stay awake that she slips in and out of consciousness, she's visited by the god of sleep himself. He sees that she's deserving of a good rest for once, and chats away with her in her semi-conscious state for a brief time, before lulling her into a deep and peaceful sleep.
It becomes kind of a Thing™ between them, where Hypnos visits and spends the night with her when she struggles to sleep. (and it gives reason as to why he's sometimes absent from the main hall in-game 👀) He never learns her name, but for some reason he can't figure out, this mortal is just so interesting to him that he keeps coming back. She fights to stay awake, but loves his visits and revels in the rest that he gives her, she's so kind and she looks so cute when she sleeps... altogether it's a series of pleasant visits for the both of them.
One night in her dreams, she feels...strange, and weaker. When Hypnos visits, he solemnly explains that she has died in her sleep. He's here to give her one more night of peaceful rest and pleasant company in the mortal realm before his brother comes to guide her away. Hypnos tells her that of the few living mortals he's ever gotten to visit, she was his favorite.
When she emerges from the Pool of Styx, she's quite confused. But she's ushered into line, where she recognizes her companion in the night keeping track of the shades like her. She asks him what happened, and he reads her name off his list. Says there that she neglected her health in life, and died in her sleep from the complications it caused - and quite early in her short human life, to boot, what a shame...
He doesn't seem to recognize her as he explains this...which is weird, because he's usually aware of people who die in their sleep - it's the closest thing he gets to spending time with his brother, after all. But she says they do know each other - he used to visit her and help her sleep, lending her the comfort of his plush robe and their gentle chats.
And then, after a moment, he recognizes the color of her sleep clothes, and those soft blue eyes...his favorite human was here again, and it's all he can do to keep from sweeping her up in his arms again - Lord Hades is right there watching, after all - and neither of them want to leave each other's side again just yet.
This is where I kinda start reaching, but I figure at this point Zagreus has gotten pretty close to everyone in the house, maybe it's even post-Persephone so things are less tense overall? And I imagine he pulls some strings to let Cici stay in the house, as a favor to Hypnos. I dunno what kind of deal gets struck... I thought about her being hired to work with the contractor, but she's the one who does the more simple decorative stuff like the rugs and floral arrangements?
I dunno but either way she kinda stays under Hypnos' watch, stays in his room most of the time (...I like to think he has a room there fksjg) but sometimes gets to hang out in the lounge or interact with Zagreus.

Nephos the Fallen Heir
From the age where Gods and Titans lived together, a child of Zeus and a mortal was born, Nephos was to become the heir to Olympus. Tipped off by an enraged God or Goddess, the Titans viciously murdered the child. The death of Nephos caused the Gods to wage war in retaliation and when the dust of the fallen Titans settled, Nephos’s heart was all that remained.
Brought to the Underworld, Nephos reformed from his heart and was raised by the House of Hades. The anonymous deity that tipped off the Titans has yet to be discovered but maybe the wrath of the Gods has stopped them from acting out again.
Haunted by the memories of his death and unable to ever return to the surface, Nephos denounces his godhood and lives day by day (or night by night), mostly spent laying awake in bed until the arrival of Prince Zagreus gave him a reason to get up. Nephos was sworn to secrecy about Zagreus’s origins and when the prince found out, the fallen heir did not stop them from leaving and simply told him: “Do what you need to do.”
The Hades AU is here baybeeeee! Also, Nephos literally means Cloud in Greek so //shrug
Would’ve kept it as Cloud but then I realized that it stood out too much against the other names

D’you know how Y/N and Hypnos have (kinda have) kids?
Do you think that they would be able to have a demigod child, considering Y/N is mortal and Hypnos is a god.
okay so.
I didn’t mean to but I ended up rambling and um… I might have created an oc???? You can have them if you want since your question is the reason they exist.
Putting my respond under the readmore. (Oh btw did you go with pink or red converse?)
So with the WMFTD!kids, they are all full gods.
They all are born just like Hypnos was though desire for children and Freaky God Magic ™ however due to Y/N’s place as his companion/consort, there is some his influence on the kiddos ( there a reason Phobetor, god of nightmares, takes after his father.)
Because this is all magic base (and Y/N being dead and all that fun stuff), they had no biological roles creating their kids. So as it stands, any children they have won’t be  a demigod. ( note this might not apply to any AUs or ABO stuff)
However!
Let's handwave all that stuff away and let's say that with Freaky God Magic ™, they do have a child who is a demigod. Maybe this is due to Hypnos being capable of carrying children for whatever reason.
The Demigod would be the fifth child and the most mortal looking of them. They wouldn’t have Hypnos’ hair or eye color but will take after Y/N.
The moment Hypnos realizes his child could die permanently, he would go to the ends of the earth to make them immortal (which ooh, that is a delicious parallel to Achilles and his mother.)
because one thing for some mortal to die, it was fate but like hell if Hypnos and Y/n will allow that to happen to their child. ( y/n will never come right out and say it but he is thankful none of his kids will have to experience a permanent death.) Especially since one could bring a god back but not a demigod.
Like Hypnos and Y/N will do everything to keep them safe. Hypnos would make sure their child is never alone, Y/N and Achilles and even Zagreus will train them to fight and stay safe. Just like Thetis, he would take their child to river Styx and use that to make them invulnerable.
Which will fail. Maybe this is due to a mistake that kills Demigod or maybe there was another war or they are killed by another god. No matter what, the demigod will almost die.
However Hypnos was able to take their shade and body into the dream world before they passed. He kept them there until they were able to merge body and soul once more.
The one thing they were trying to spare their child from was the only thing allowed them to emerge as a god. Reborn, they will become the god/personification of the near death experience, of last memories before death.
They are often seen with one of the gods/goddess of death, with a cheerful smile and a poppy tucked behind their ear and a small hourglass in their hand that would flip if the mortal is spared.

Fic writer as game: N, U, Z, please!
Thanks for the ask!
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
Lol, plenty. Writing is hard. But on the other hand, I'm very possessive of my ideas and characters, so it'd have to be someone I trust to do a good job. That said, if anyone wants to take my crack Hadesgame idea of Charon running a sex shop in Erebus, go ahead. I think that would be extremely good regardless of who wrote it, and I don't know when my version will see the light of day.
Also, if someone with a better handle on their characters could write the Thirteenth Doctor meeting Rose Tyler and TenToo (romantic), that would be a big help.
U: Share three of your favourite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Oh, man, it's hard to pick just three, but these are the first three that came to mind.
I adore @rufeepeach's work. Her writing style is something I aspire to, and her Red Lights series is one of my favorite stories ever. I love her handle on the characters, the beauty of her prose, and her sheer creativity. Also Bright Ideas is the fic that introduced me to pegging. :D
I have had the remarkable pleasure of watching @luxmyth become an amazing writer over the course of almost a decade. I love their ability to change their style to match the story they're working on, shifting from the English translation of a Japanese man to a fifty year old man from Arkansas to the English translation of a Russian man who has been dead for many years. Their fic Fear of Falling is one of my comfort reads.
Finally, @thejakeformerlyknownasprince writes one of the most involved and compelling series I've ever read. The world-building, the plotting, the character work, and the prose in Eleutherophobia are all top-notch. It balances heartbreak, hope, and humor perfectly, just like Animorphs should. They also write very fun (and often devastating) AUs, and they care too much about the meatsuits.
Z: Major character death—do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?
Well, right now I'm writing for Hadesgame and before that I was writing for The Adventure Zone, so there was quite a lot of temporary major character death, but generally, I avoid permadeath in both reading and writing. Or I try to any way. I don't have the most self-control. I'm a glutton for punishment, so I've read a lot of temporary deaths for Lucretia and Zagreus, and it is very upsetting every time. Please be careful reading Whose Woods These Are and spiderbirdo's Mortal Coil comic. I think if they hadn't both ended up more or less okay, I would still be crying.
Never read a Percy Jackson death to my knowledge, and I don't plan to! (:

Chapter 28: The Scions of Theseus
By the time they had trudged back to Eleusis, they found the town transformed. The sleepy town was now bustling with people. thanks to the arrival of a warship.  Zagreus had never seen such a large ship in his life. A hundred oars bristled from its hull like porcupine quills and it blocked off half the bay. Its two wooden masts were like ancient oaks breaching the sky and the mati painted on the prow glared at them from across the waves. By the docks, the ship’s crew jostled and shouted to one another as they unloaded the cargo.

i had a thought (oh wow) and i need to write it down
so,, there's a lot of people that compare hades (the game,, not the god) and ace attorney bc the similarities between some characters, but there's no "serious crossover" or some fic that addresses this even vaguely.
SO,, i said "hey, phoenix has went through some pretty rough shit, how's that he didn't die yet??".
and zagreus was the first thing that came to my mind. the guy is literally the god of blood and life, almost completely sure that his domain also covers rebirth. so i imagined two things:
an au where the gods become mortals bc people don't worship them anymore?? like. zagreus = phoenix. thanatos = miles. megaera = franziska. maya = hypnos (or maybe dusa but she's not a god so idk). athena = athena. imagine the possibilities.
OR, phoenix is blessed by zagreus. i think that would be really cool, maybe phoenix's parents could be part of all of this (even if there's almost no mention of them in the games lmao), kind of some followers of the chthonic gods. and then phoenix appears and zagreus says "hey, i like this kid". so yeah,, phoenix didn't die (yet) thanks to zag
im pretty sure i wont do anything with this bc i have a Severe Lack of Constance and Motivation, but it's a bit interesting so i might share it with you

i am interested in your hades au, would you mind giving some details about it? 👁 it looks really interesting
[This AU is from these drawings!]
*cracks knuckles* Ok! I actually got enough sleep last night so I'm finally feeling up to explaining this au lmao
Also I hope that by “some details” you meant “way way too many” because I am nothing if not long winded. Also @hades-hellsite asked for context too, here you go
The central premise is that, after he dies, Achilles manages to make an arrangement with Hades that allows both him and Patroclus to stay in Elysium together. He's not employed to work at the house and he never becomes Zagreus's combat trainer.
Hades makes a few attempts to find Zagreus a different teacher among the shades of great warriors, but being skilled does not make someone able to teach. And being able to teach one way doesn't mean someone will be good for every student. When Zagreus doesn't learn well with the few mentors Hades tries, which he barely gives a chance to breathe anyway, he's quick to decide that he must have no martial ability and declares Zagreus a failure in that as he has about so many things.
This has two major effects on Zagreus before his escape attempts begin. One, without any chance to actually grow into aptitude in combat, he's left without anything substantial to put his energy into and, more importantly, he's left without anything he feels good at and that gives value to his efforts. Two is that, in Achilles' absence, very few people in the house give him any care and support untwisted by the politics of the house and the judgment of his father. There is Orpheus, kind to him before Hades locks him away for refusing to sing, Hypnos, willing to put the house to sleep so he can find the truth though jumbled up in his own problems, and Nyx.
Nyx is the only one to aid Zagreus when he decides to try to escape. She contacts Olympus and weaves careful lies to win their support and blesses his departure. She's also the only one who believes that Zagreus has the slightest chance of escaping. Already in canon, most everyone tells him there no way he'll make it out, but here, it's so much worse. He doesn't know how to fight, his initial attempts are pitiful and his progress negligible, and near everyone lashes out at him to get back in line and stop making things worse.
He doesn't even have the Infernal Arms. Achilles is the one who brings them to him in canon; here Zagreus takes a simple bronze sword from one of the house's many displays of weapons from wars long past. He thanks the Fates that the Styx restores it the same way it does his body when he dies because he nicks and dulls the edges every time.
Despite all the disadvantages, Zagreus throws himself into escaping with unshakable determination, bone deep stubbornness. He picks up his sword and will figure out how to use it himself. Experience will be his teacher. He dies over and over and he watches his enemies and learns how they move and how he must react, mimicking their attacks for his own use and adjusting and adjusting after each failure. And contrary to Hades' adamant belief, Zagreus is very intelligent and learns brilliantly when allowed to and he grows stronger and stronger.
There's no teacher more savage than experience in something like this, though. The pursuit is agonizing and the cost is enormous and adjusting to this ceaseless violence feels impossible.
Much of my interest in this idea is how the added strain on his circumstances and relationships affects Zagreus and his mental state. At his best, Zag looks a lot like he does in canon, with his laurels unfurled and vibrant, and his feet glowing hot, but he rarely feels his best here. His laurel leaves curl in dry and crisp, muted like the leaves of autumn. Flakes of ash and soot build up over his legs and encase more and more as he suffers. So deep is his feeling of failure and being trapped that it affects him physically.
Not always, though. His flames respond to his emotions, burn brighter in his passion. Enthusiasm, love, fervor, bliss, anger set him glowing.
After a brutally drawn out span of time, Zagreus meets Achilles and Patroclus in Elysium and tbh, the rest of my interest is really in how the altered circumstances change the evolution of their relationships with each other. The pair of warriors were never separated for an extended time and Achilles is less downtrodden and resigned and Patroclus is less bitter and abrasive when Zagreus stumbles upon them.
They don't fight him, which Zagreus counts among his greatest blessings, although Achilles still seems to have an interest. It makes him twitchy and he jumps when Achilles finally lifts his spear and swings it around in his third time in their little glade only to bump the flat of the blade against elbow and tell him to keep it in more towards his body. Zagreus blinks rapidly at him before adjusting his arm.
Achilles helps him here and there, tips and tricks and valuable advice, but he never gives anything near the thorough instruction he did in canon. On one hand, he doesn't need to. Zagreus is a self made fighter and it leaves him with weaknesses but it is also a powerful thing. He is unpredictable and incredibly adaptable and he only continues to improve.
On the other hand, there's no room for it. Achilles is gentle with his guidance, but Zagreus is rubbed raw by all the fighting he's done and all that still depends on it. He doesn't want to always focus on the weapon in his hands. Patroclus notices and curbs Achilles' input when it exceeds its bounds. He sits aside and observers carefully when they spar. Zagreus doesn't need another's direction which is fine by him, who's lost all desire for combat. He gives his aid through his assortment of trinkets that carry Zagreus further to the surface.
Zagreus barely knows what to do with himself in the face of their care. He's so unaccustomed to such generous and genuine support, interest devoid of expectation or blame. As familiarity between the three of them grows, their interactions grow warmer, more tender and comfortable. Their care lays on a foundation, not a hinge, and Zagreus grapples with understanding that he really can lean on it. It all leaves him so uncertain yet so desperate because he wants more than anything to have joy and conversation and company with others where he doesn't shoulder heavy guilt from unspoken accusations over his escaping the house and to have a place he feels he belongs without being an intrusion.
He does at first believe he's intruding, though. Intruding on their time together in the peace of Elysium. It takes them time to convince him that they value his presence immeasurably. The opportunity to stay together in the Underworld has been invaluable for Achilles and Patroclus, but the peace of Elysium is a deceptive thing. It wears away and prickles at them, pressing down in odd warping ways. Patroclus is beyond pleased to have the war behind him and that it can never force him to fight again, and despite Achilles retaining an interest in competition and combat, he does feel the same way. Having a cause though, something to believe in and worth devoting their efforts towards... They didn't realize how deeply they missed it until Zagreus. It is revitalizing. They thrive in his genuine, boundless kindness and long to support him.
The drawings of Orpheus arguing with Hades and Zagreus fighting with Nyx is from one of my plot point ideas. Later down the line, together, Hades, Persephone, and Nyx agree to forbid Zagreus from seeing Achilles and Patroclus at Nyx's behest. Similarly to how she talks about Dusa in canon, she sees mortal shades as beneath his station and that it's highly unbecoming for the prince to be consorting with them. Zagreus fights against the idea ferociously and is only smothered by the threat that, if he seeks them out anyway, Hades will void Achilles' agreement and have Patroclus moved to the proper plane of the Underworld.
It crushes Zagreus. He loves them and cares about them so much and being torn apart from them is a wound that cuts so deep. But even more than that, what breaks him open most, is the fact that it came from someone he cared for and trusted most. Nyx was the one person in the House he could depend on most and this betrayal at her hand is devastating. And for such a worthless reason as propriety and godly vanity. It's not her place to force those upon him. It hurts Zagreus to the core.
Orpheus is the only one willing to stick up for him in this, deeply empathetic to the grief of being separated from loved ones and well acquainted with the fact that such punishments will only damage, never correct. After all, his stint of punishment in Erebus didn't revive his desire to sing, it was Zagreus's dedication and vibrancy that did that. One of the many invaluable gifts Zagreus gave him, including reuniting him with Eurydice, making him happier than he'd been since her death. Orpheus can't keep biting his tongue when all these gods refuse to see any of this.
It all comes to a head dramatically and painfully and I've thought of a few variations on how it would play out. I'll leave it for now though, I might draw it or write it later >:3c  Also this got really long lol. Hopefully the idea is at least somewhat interesting!
And here, have the lines from these two drawings because I like the way they look

So I was sleeping and this au happened. Granted this is from a dream, so a lot of it doesn't make sense in retrospect. AA fans hang on until the end.
What I vaguely remember is that due to some reason Than is exiled from the Underworld (much like how Apollo and Hesphaestus were exiled from Olympus). When Than is exiled, they also erase his memories. "Forget him, forget him, forget him! All memories of Zagreus are gone! I curse you, Thanatos. Your love for him will remain. The yearning you would feel to be parted from him will endure. Yet you won’t understand the never-ending ache, won’t comprehend the source of your misery. Should anyone speak to you of Zagreus, you’ll react with anger, then forget the conversation. May you wander on the surface for all eternity and never find salvation."
And for a couple of years, that's what happens. Than wanders the surface with some vague memories. He knows he's the God of Death, he has a family, but he doesn't know why he's banned from the Underworld. And he's restless and feels like he lost something very important to him. That is until one day, Than runs into a mortal.
Zag throws away his immortal body and is reborn on the surface in an effort to find Than. Zag knows the chances are slim, what with Than cursed to not remember him AND Zag also losing his memories once he's reborn. But since this is the only way for Zag to leave the Underworld, he has to make that gamble. By sheer willpower, Zag remembers he has to FIND someone. Growing up, he knows he needs to go look for someone. He doesn't know who, but he knows it's someone important to him. And then cue the two of them finally meeting.
Skip skip skip. Typical things of them falling in love and unlocking each others’ memories. They spend time together as a couple at last, remembering who they are and that they were lovers before Than was exiled from the Underworld. The longing that plagued Than for years finally disappears in Zag’s presence.
But then tragedy strikes when Zag's mortal body dies. As Zag lays dying in Than's arms, he promises him he'll try to find him again. Zag will get reborn as many times as it takes to be with Than. Thanatos just needs to wait for him. Thanatos makes a promise in return that he’ll also try to find Zagreus’ new reincarnation.
.............and so the next life Zag is born into, he becomes Phoenix Wright and Than calls himself Miles Edgeworth in order to blend in with the humans.
I was so thrown off by my dream and the sudden crossover, I burst out laughing and woke myself up. The crossover you never expected looool.
Too bad I woke up, but I totally expect the later half of the au to be about Miles feeling something vaguely familiar about Phoenix, but can’t quite place his finger on it. Is it his true love? But it can’t be......And so it’s a mix of them trying to solve as case together and Phoenix eventually remembering their past lives.

Thanzag Hades & HoO crossover pt 1
Ok, ok, let’s talk. Anyone still remember Son of Neptune? Yeah, ok imagine if it was Thanzag from Hades (2018) put into the modern time. Before we even get into the HoO crossover part, just imagine Thanatos with his ipad going around on skype or facetime showing Zagreus parts of the world that he can’t visit because the poor boi dies within like the hour of going on the mortal realm. And you know, just in general getting to talk with him even when he’s so busy with his job. I imagine Zagreus also having the time of his life on an ipad or laptop of his own on the internet looking at whatever new thing the mortals cooked up and also on google earth. I imagine he’d also start buying so much Amazon goods using all those gems he’s collected over the years and use Hermes express or whatever to get it to the underworld.
ANYWAY, on with actual plot and not just fluff. Also I’m just gonna assume that Nico knows about Zagreus but didn’t know about Thanzag just because he doesn’t see either very much with Thanatos going around the world all the time and Zagreus constantly out and about trying to escape the Underworld once more and also in general it’s still a well kept secret in the Underworld and the Olympians haven’t figured it out yet either.
When Thanatos is captured and everyone’s worried af especially Zagreus because he can’t leave the Underworld to go search for him so all he can do is continue doing his job (aka trying to escape the Underworld) and like despair because he can’t get into contact with Olympus to get any updates (because they’re all struggling w their Roman counterparts).
Not to mention, most of the house is also struggling with their Roman counterparts so to Zag is rare because he doesn’t have a Roman counterpart to struggle with (as far as I could find anyway. Even Thanatos and the Furies have a roman counterpart, but I couldn’t find one for Zagreus, if I’m wrong tell me though). Because of this the other members of the house aren’t able to do their duties properly (except maybe like Achilles since he’s a shade, though he might have decided to be reborn with Patroclus by that time who knows). So Zag, clear-headed and concerned as hell as he realizes that the Underworld is getting progressively more and more chaotic with souls escaping and Tartarus becoming more and more restless, decides to instead of keep escaping and create any more possible gaps in security, attempts to keep the Underworld together as everyone else around him are busy with their roman counterparts. So the poor boi is stressed ok.
Anyway, when Thanatos is freed there’s a really nice sweet reunion before the two of them proceed to go and try to keep the Underworld in one piece. Yeah that’s it. Personally I have more ideas on this AU but if it were to follow the HoO timeline better it’d be something like that. Please note, I haven’t read the HoO series in a couple years so if I’m being vague that’s why.
Or like they could be introduced later like a section out of the Demigod Files and Thanatos comes around to camp to ask if he can ask for a favor from the demigods and that something happens to be finding something that Zagreus gave him or something and he lost it and that’s how Zagreus gets introduced to the demigods? Idk I haven’t thought that part out properly yet yikes.
