ANOTHER EARTH, FILE 001 – BATMAN

Circa 1992 – ‘Now, It���s Just BATMAN’.

Coinciding with the adoption of Dick Grayson and the emergence of Robin, this is where the Batman image really gets locked in. I think Robin plays an important part in dragging Bruce out of a place of loathing (self and others), and that provokes change. With new heroes (and villains) coming out of the woodwork for the first time in 30 or 40 years, the public is starting to re-acclimate to a culture of costumed aggression; in Gotham, especially, this is roughly when the Long Halloween happens. The crime families are getting pressured from Batman on one side, an increasingly violent and corrupt GCPD on another side… and the sudden dramatic influx of weird, hyper-violent, mentally-unstable gimmick villains is causing problems for them in a whole new way. In 2003, a worldwide crisis brings together the Justice League for the first time – and Batman is luckily dressed for the occasion.

After a couple of years of dismantling Gotham’s criminal underworld, Bruce has contacts who know how to actually design clothing, and he’s learning what works and what doesn’t as tools in his caped crusade against crime. Drastically changing the design of his costume serves two purposes: one, it shakes up his appearance now that the shock value of his original suit has worn off, and two, it makes him more approachable to other heroes and civilians – especially children. It is lighter, more mobile, and prioritizes agility over armor; now that he has a couple years of experience occupying a pocket in his utility belt, he’s much better at not getting shot. This outfit is inspired by Tim Sale’s Long Halloween suit, the Troika suit, and other early/mid-80s Batman suits.

I think I should clarify that what I mean is that, at the end of the day, everything I say in regards to this show *is* just an opinion and, more specifically, it's my personal opinion. Despite joking, despite sounding "firm" or saying something snarky like "I will not be entertaining arguments at this time", I do not at all (ever) expect or encourage people to agree with what I say. I don't put the content in the tag; I keep a lot of things to myself and mind my business; I mull things over and come to an understanding that I don't need to say anything in regards to the conversation. I am aware that social media is not private - anyone can see what I have to say at any time. I am fully aware that my observation comes from being a fan of CATS for a *very* long time and that, in itself, forms a bias. I am not an actual expert in anything - I am not one to take the word of above a grain of salt. This is just my CATS sideblog. I just talk about cat people.

A lot of my "concern" or "dislike" or general critique (which is never to be taken personally) is completely superficial and preference based (because at the end of the day, who does this affect? Not me - not you guys - certainly not a multi million dollar show or ALW or RUG or any of them. I can assure you they don't care a *lick*). However, it does come from a place of careful observation of what the *company* is doing - what are the *creatives* doing, and then asking why. What's the *motive* behind this? Does this affect the performers (Troika non-equity/budget cuts)? Did/does it affect others in the creative team (Gillian Lynne; cheaper print costumes that rip easier and put more strain on the costume department)? Does it have the possibility of affecting casual audiences who *aren't* familiar with the show (If I am a random person off the street who goes to see CATS on a whim, is the structure of the show working? Are changes helping or hindering the already hard to understand narrative/loose show? Can I tell any kind of difference in character individuality or is it going to be an overwhelming blur and hard to enjoy? If I have a bad seat - can I see faces at all?)? Does the choice carry negative connotation with it (Rap Tugger)?

I never want to make people feel pressured or "wrong" in how they feel about something, how they interpret something, especially if they happen to like it. Because you aren't "wrong" if you like any of the changes, you aren't wrong if you like the 2019 movie, you aren't wrong if you prefer the updated choreography over the old stuff, you aren't wrong in your casting preference. Then on the other end of the spectrum, you aren't wrong if you *dislike* changes, you aren't wrong if a makeup or costume design just isn't working for you, or if an interpretation/production isn't good, or you don't love the way a performer does something (as long as you are not *telling them directly* or are commenting on Youtube videos/social medias of those performers) - you aren't wrong about any of it. As long as you are respectfully engaging with things, that's not a good word to be using in these scenarios. None of this is meant to be taken or defended personally. You are enjoying and engaging with the show in the way you wish to enjoy the show, which is what it's about.

Anyway, that was too long of an answer. Disclaimer is just when I say anything that is an opinion, while I always appreciate support or engagement, I am also one voice in a sea of conversation happening. If I am engaging critically with something I like, I am also appreciating what it *does* give me and understanding that my opinion is not universal.

Chapter Nine

This would probably be more impactful if we knew who the fuck Nico was. 

This book keeps hurtling character after character at us, as if the author thinks that the more characters, the more stars we’ll give it later. 

“After you attacked Victor, he came to me, admitted his feelings for me. We were going to be together—until he had to defect. Because of you.”

Try asking Kayla how her feelings for Victor worked out. Go on. We’ll wait for you to get back before we continue this conversation. 

“Troika voided [Victor’s] contract, allowing him to return to Myriad. I wanted to go with him, but I was denied. To be with him, I’ll have to go to court.”

So it’s not bad enough that we’re subjected to first person POV switching. But we’re in Killian’s POV, and he’s watching the stuff that’s happening to Ten through her perspective, and instantly knows all of the things that she knows. Because of their bond. 

I sure fucking hope that I don’t have to explain why this is the absolute goddamned worst writing crime you can commit. 

“Can’t be helped, my little hooman.”

CAN WE NOT. 

“Eron called dibs on everything with four legs and fur, and fish. Ambrosine wanted dragons, snakes and creepers like that.” 

There’s literally nothing here about where birds ended up. I STILL WANT AN EMU.

“A lawn moo-er.” Laughter abounds. 

When the bears notice Biscuit, they jolt upright, ready to attack. The moment his identity clicks, however, they relax. “Hey, Biscuit. What you doing this far out?” one asks. 

“And with a human.” The other tsk-tsks. “You broke the beast-code.” 

“Frick, Frack, this is Ten,” Biscuit says. “Ten, Frick and Frack. Forget the code, guys. We need to borrow some weapons. And by borrow I mean keep forever.”

Suddenly we’re in a Disney movie, with the comedic relief who have cute matching names. What the hell is happening. 

Though my mind is a jumble of contradictions, I make a decision. — Don’t worry, baby. The dark is where I excel.—

Chapter 9 summary: As mentioned, this is now Killian’s POV. The first couple of pages are basically Killian twiddling his thumbs with Archer and a healer named Dawn. Then Ten gets hit with the bomb from the end of the previous chapter. Although as Dawn is quick to point out, since Killian is upright and talking, Ten will be as well. 

Then we’re subjected to POV inside of a POV. Yes, it’s maddening. Anyway, the person who lobbed the bomb at Ten is somebody named Nico. I don’t think that we’ve seen Nico before, or if we have, he was so irrelevant that he might as well not have shown up. Anyway, he’s doing this because he fancies himself in love with Victor, and obviously wants to defect to be with him. But in the end, he’s barely an inconvenience. 

Killian fills a couple of pages more with his random, rambling thoughts about Ten as she and Biscuit continue on. It seems as though the light from Ten is pushing through his darkness, so his thoughts are getting slightly less… murder-y. 

Biscuit takes Ten to two polar bears who have some weapons, and Biscuit asks for as much as Ten can carry. He then explains to Ten that Shamus went down into the tunnels, which are dark. Which normally wouldn’t be a problem, since he can sniff his way through things. But after the bomb, his nose is full of smoke. Killian pipes up and says that he can help navigate her through.
