Shane sat, beer in hand, feet hanging just above the water. Nothing felt more accurate, more of his essence, than that.
The man sat by and watched the world leave him behind, a beer in hand, a crushed can in hand, a beer in hand. The alcohol poisoned his veins. Maybe that’s why he was so untouchable… so avoidable.
The man was drowning, his head just barely above the water, but the waves were violent and threatened to bring him under. But then the calm settled and reminded him that he hasn’t drowned…
But the calm was a beautiful liar, for when she turned her back she was also the storm.
He looked down at the water, his confession to the farmer about his life and his issues came out so unexpectedly. He wasn’t one to share, he didn’t even like the farmer all that much, but sitting there together, felt sobering, telling the truth was sobering.
In the dark lake’s reflection Shane looked at himself, how rough he had become, the sad pathetic shell of a once great man. Eventually he’d meet himself under it all and life would ripple away like a star on the water.
Shane was alone.
The farmer’s reflection came by his own. A beer in hand fell into the water, the ripples washed them away.
Shane was alone.

Hey I saw you mention looking for a farming sim. Might I recommend Coral Island? It's like Stardew Valley on steroids with a huuuuge diverse cast plus scuba diving, the traditional mining and farming and cooking, a massive museum, etc. Ive been having a lot of fun with it!
oh I've been *looking* at it\loosely following the development for a while now. it looks very pretty and character customization and decorations seems to be very cute, I'll give it that.
but idk, I have some doubts. maybe (probably) I'll eventually cave in and give it a try once I have the funds and the game is a bit more bugs-free

im finally actually starting my own hermit playthrough :3 im not masochistic enough to go CC. Any tips not previously mentioned? ive looked at all the posts as a bit of a refresher. im just sad that its going to be so long without a fishing rod. fishing is my favorite thing :3
Yoooo that’s awesome good luck!! I do actually have a few updates/tips from doing my second hermit run! (I’m doing the community center this time 😄) And don’t worry, you’ll be doing A Lot of fishing once you get the rod
Original stardew valley hermit playthrough rules/explanation & my tag for the playthrough
The first change is an optional addition to the “one festival per year” rule. I decided that a villager birthday could count as a festival day, as long as (similarly to the original festival day rule) the only thing you do while off the farm that day is talk/give gift to that villager. Otherwise there is like NO way to marry someone unless you use your regular yearly field trip day on their birthday for like four years and/or luck out by getting them as your secret santa. Also, after like year 4 you kinda run out of festivals you want to go to, so it’s nice to have an alternative
I also discovered that when rocks spawn on your farm, more rocks tend to spawn around them, which is a big help in those early years when getting enough stone is just. Agonizing. I ended up leaving the fishing quadrant of my farm to fill up with rocks (culling occasionally) and it helped a lot
BUY ORE on field trip day oh my god. You won’t have much spare money for the first couple years but even getting enough to make a couple bars is like. Such a boon
I ended up buying wood chippers from Robin to turn excess hardwood and driftwood into plain wood. I needed the extra wood despite having literal stacks of the stuff because:
Charcoal kilns are the easiest, fastest, and most reliable way to get coal in this playthrough. Seriously, I’ve never used these things previously but I have like 10 on my new hermit file and use them constantly
I also learned (crushingly) that you can’t level up combat by killing monsters on the farm. I would still 100% recommend enabling monster spawning because the bat wings and slime are used in a few things and you probably won’t be staying up late enough for them to spawn most of the time anyway. Also hardly any monsters spawn, it’s genuinely never been an issue even when all I had was a scythe. The easiest way to get decent weapons btw is by fishing them up
It’s also nearly impossible to pass grandpa’s evaluation and get the statue of perfection by going the joja route in this challenge, I recommend scrapping that goal. With serious effort in my second playthrough though I managed to unlock the casino and buy a statue of endless fortune, which is a fantastic source of gold and iridium
I think that’s about it! I hope you have fun, I know I’ve definitely had a lot of fun with this challenge.
Here’s a recent-ish screenshot of my second hermit playthrough! Haven’t played in a while but I’m currently in winter of year 7 😃

might start playing more stardew valley than is strictly advisable again. if I do, I'll share a few screenshots.
currently stuck in my head: the selkie song. it wasn't precisely deliberate but the decision to name fics after songs I really enjoy is paying dividends.
