Far From Home Initial Review: What I Liked and What I Didn’t (Spoilers)

I saw Far From Home yesterday and jotted down some of my immediate responses, and then took some time to think on those points. I do intend to see the film again in the next few days and I may be adding to or amending this list.

Major spoilers below.

(CW: sexual harassment, victim blaming)

What I Liked:

That scene in the jet where Happy stitches Peter up was A+. Not just regarding the expert acting, but how the filmmakers decided to handle the scene. Peter’s fear, stress, and self doubt briefly shifts to anger, and he snaps at Happy for telling him to “relax.” He immediately apologizes, saying “i’m sorry, I shouldn't shout.” Happy in return responds by choosing his words more carefully. Happy then gives him a gentle and encouraging pep talk in which he recognizes Peter’s emotions, encourages him, and explains that he doesn’t need to live up to the legacy of Iron Man and that he only needs to do his best. He remains on task and pragmatic, but never rushes Peter or forces him to do anything he’s not comfortable doing, offering support all the while.

Peter is allowed to cry at several points throughout the film in front of other male characters, including Nick Fury and Happy. He is never judged for this and he is never made to feel like his emotions are unreasonable or invalid. Continuing this from the previous films even as Peter gets older and takes on more responsibilities further normalizes male emotion in action films.

Peter consistently voices his concerns and asks for help instead of overwhelming himself and internalizing.

Peter was noticeably shorter than MJ in most of their scenes together, including where they kiss or hold hands. Peter’s height is never made into the butt of a joke, which I had feared might happen. No one even mentions it. Marvel did have Tom wear shoes that made him a little taller than he actually is, but I do appreciate that they didn’t drastically increase his height like they always did to RDJ.

JK Simmons returning as J Jonah Jameson was a great surprise, and it gives me hope that we may yet see Peter as a photographer

Bucky being included in the Thank You Avengers collage in the Midtown Tech news video

Mr. Harrington and Mr. Dell were definitely dating and i’m here for it.

Seeing Peter fight without a suit was cool. I’ve always thought there was a kind of disconnect when characters like spiderman or black panther fight with their masks on, like they feel separate from the actors. But seeing Peter fight in his civilian clothing made it feel more real to me that this kid really has these powers and can do all these amazing flips and feats of strength. It also let us see more of his creativity and quick thinking.

I’m impressed that they were able to make Mysterio’s mo-cap suit look cool instead of completely ridiculous like they do in real life.

Peter closing his eyes and fighting the drones with his spidey-sense to avoid the illusions was so badass.

The violence felt real. Every time Peter got hit, the audience felt it. Several times he was unable to stand up, he limped and winced and cried. It felt like the consequences of such heavy action were realistically considered when Peter couldn’t just pop back up and shake it off.

"If you were better, maybe Tony would still be alive” “You’re just a scared little kid in a sweatsuit”

“You got me?” “I got you.”

“lets get a drink” “i’m- i’m not 21.”

Peter going to a parent figure wearing an oversized shirt and crying while confessing his self-doubts was an oddly specific parallel that i didn’t expect to get again but i’m certainly not complaining

What I Didn’t:

The “rest stop hookup” scene was deeply inappropriate. Peter, a child, is commanded to undress in front of an adult female agent. He initially resists but is intimidated into compliance when she repeats the order. One of Peter’s classmates, Brad, walks into the room and Peter is literally caught with his pants around his ankles with an adult stranger. Brad makes the assumption that Peter is hooking up with her, and takes a photo for evidence with the intention of showing it to MJ in order to ruin Peter’s “chance” with her. Peter is blamed for a situation in which he is the victim, and the audience is meant to find this entire scene funny. Instead of what could have been a really cool scene in which this agent presents the new suit she’s made for Peter, we are given this very uncomfortable scene of sexual harassment played for laughs.

Peter and Brad competing for MJ’s affection and actively sabotaging each other is unnecessary.

The use of old footage from previous films was lazy, especially when Marvel could have easily recreated those scenes from the perspectives of the new antagonists. I’ve always found this distracting, especially when the quality noticeably drops between two clips, though this is more of a personal peeve than anything I see as a legitimate problem.

The list of characters who become villains because they feel personally or indirectly slighted by Tony and Howard is getting too big. Honestly I think it’s lazy to keep using that as backstory/motivation for new villains after over 10 years, especially now that Tony isn’t even alive.

The multiverse being made up by Beck was disappointing.

The monsters being the Elementals instead of Sandman or Hydroman was also disappointing.

I wish that the spidey-sense was represented by some creative audio or visual cue, like the goosebumps in iw or the ringing noise in spiderverse

There were several lgbt characters/actors on the class trip but they weren’t very visible. You really don’t notice them at all unless you were aware of who was cast beforehand and were watching closely for them. I’m not asking for Peter to swing through new york with a rainbow flag screaming “trans rights” but I would have liked to have seen a queer couple holding hands or a student with a trans patch on their backpack or something. I had been hoping for Peter to actually interact with one of them, to refer to them by name. Obviously having such a diverse cast with queer characters being played by actual queer actors is a huge step up from Joe Russo’s “grieving man” but like that shouldn’t be where the bar is at this point.

Tbh the headstone and zombie iron man were cliche, and i think it would have been much more impactful if Mysterio had made an allusion of Tony himself instead.

Why would Dr Strange not be available to fight massive elemental monsters from another dimension bent on consuming the earth like dude make yourself available??

I wish the new suit included Karen so that we could see how she and Peter’s interactions have changed now that he is expertly familiar with the functions of the suits. Additionally, the spider-drone would have been cool to see again.

The illusion to Uncle Ben with the “BFP” initials on Peter’s suitcase was great but I do wish we could get some actual information about him. We don’t need to see his death or the “with great power comes great responsibility” speech- we’ve already seen that enough times- but a little clarification on what officially happened to him in the mcu would be interesting.

Honestly I thought it was too convenient that May, Happy, and all of Peter’s closest friends also dusted. I had wanted to see how interactions between Peter and May or friends such as Ned would be tested emotionally due to the five-year gap.

The BARF tech being invented by Beck and stolen by Tony detracts from it being used in Civil War to establish Tony’s feelings about Howard and Maria’s murders. If it isn’t Tony’s invention, that takes the heart out of it.

I had really hoped that the glasses were going to end up revealing Tony as an AI, or at least some kind of message from him, and i thought was weird that Tony would give Peter access to a system that allows him to order drone strikes on his classmates.

Also... so the drone strike on peter’s bus was faked by Mysterio’s team because they needed to get the EDITH glasses from Peter? Because the EDITH glasses give them access to the satellite that deploys the drones? But they already have the same drones? and use one them to fake the bus attack? so why do they need EDITH? Maybe i missed something but that makes no sense to me.

my favorite female character: Natasha Romanoff. In know it’s super popular to hate her and ScarJo now, but I refuse to fall into that. Nat is still a fantastic character and ScarJo still a fantastic actress! (also for real? Why isn’t anybody hating Benedict Cumberbatch for playing a whitewashed Khan in the Star Trek reboot? When people start hating him for that, I might actually take all your hate for ScarJo more seriously).

my favorite male character: Anthony Edward Stark. My GOD I love this character. RDJ is hands down the best actor in the MCU and he has given such incredible depth to Tony (backed by overall fantastic writing for the character) that Tony has become one of the best fictional characters ever. Also forever giving props to RDJ for asking that Tony have anxiety in IM3!

my favorite book/season/etc: Iron Man 3. I know that’s not most people’s favorite, but I DON’T KNOW WHY! That movie is enormously underrated, and it’s 10000% ONLY underrated because people disliked the Mandarin twist which… WHY??? It was a great twist! Yeah it woulda been pretty cool to see Ben Kingsley being an actual badass villain, but that’s only because of how GOOD of an actor he is!Y’all just hate that you didn’t get Exactly What You Expected And Wanted To The Extent That Your Movie Was Entirely Predictable *cough*Winter Soldier*cough*.

my favorite episode (if its a tv show): N/A

my favorite cast member: Robert Downey Jr, obviously! RDJ is so amazing and so talented and he takes care of everybody and is so genuinely humble about all of this and just… THE PERFECT MAN Y’ALL!!!

my favorite ship: PEPPERONY!!!! Literally it is the best ship in anything ever. It’s such an OTP that no other ship can come even close to comparing. It’s on an entire other plane of existence!

a character I’d die defending: Tony Stark. If you come into my house and try to convince me that Tony Stark is a villain you will have a fight on your hands that you will not win.

a character I just can’t sympathize with: Quill. I’m sorry, but I absolutely hate Quill. I never found him to be a very interesting or appealing character in the first place, and honestly? I just don’t find Chris Pratt a very good actor, so he isn’t able to give depth to what I already consider a pretty shallow character.

a character I grew to love: Ummmmm… none actually. Basically with MCU characters it was growing to love characters MORE (so only increasing the levels of love), or growing to hate characters I previously loved. Either that or just... being neutral about a character and continuing being neutral about that character (for example: sorry guys, but I’m not on your Thor hype train. I literally love him just as much as I always did... right from the first Thor movie. Ragnarok didn’t magically make him the be-all end all, even if his power-up was pretty cool. Same with Ant Man. I’m just... neutral.)

my anti otp: St*cky. I’m sorry, but that ship literally ruined this fandom. Plus… honestly? It’s awful! It’s unhealthy, obsessive, codependent, and paints Bucky as nothing but a vessel for Steve’s manpain and Steve as nothing but a selfish and obsessive asshole.

So those last two are totally lies.I never really liked Strange, but grew to love him after Infinity War came out

And the anti ship is 10000% st*rker!!! Thta ship is a disgusting pedophile ship and if you ship it you need to stay 16 trillion miles away from me

Thunderstruck (pt.3)

Characters: Negan X (au) Lucille

Warnings: language, fluff, mutual heavy petting ;)

Notes: gonna get some plot goin with these two I promise lol

The warm feeling of someone wrapped around me woke me from my restful sleep. letting out a pleased hum, I pulled his arm closer to my chest.

Funny, I never found my carpet particularly comfortable...but right now, it was the only place in the world I wanted to be.

I smiled as Negan pressed his nose into my hair, his face rubbing against my neck until he was able to kiss the warm flesh with a happy purr.

“Do you ever sleep?” I mumbled against his arm as I pulled it under my cheek for a makeshift pillow. He chuckled softly as he breathed against my ear “never for too long”.

I couldn't help the shiver that ran up my spine as he continued to kiss my sensitive skin, his right leg sliding between mine slowly as he rested his head on my shoulder.

“we gotta get up?” he grumbled into my neck, I giggled at the realization that neither one of us wanted to face the world outside these walls. Normal or not, our lives had changed and we had to adapt because now that we had found one another…

We were gonna cling to each other for dear life.

“They're gonna think I'm him”

I frowned rubbing the hairs on his arm with a tiny smile “I know...we could just say you're an uncanny lookalike”.

He growled “I fucking hate this, it's like having a fucking twin you despise”. I giggled “Negan you don't even know him, how can you despise him?”

“He's fucking around with my goddamn face darlin, this kind of fucking attention isn't gonna be a good thing”.

He had a point.

Letting out a deep sigh I pulled away from him to sit up, looking down at his beautiful hazel eyes and sexy as fuck bedhead.

“Well, I got some shades you could wear and a hoodie or...or...I don't know...we could move to the country or something…” I bit my lip dropping my eyes to the floor “..I...I mean...if you want to?”

His rough exhale made my heart drop “baby I don't want to come in here and fucking uproot your damn life, I've done enough of that shit already...i'll just stay here, out of sight ok?...find some way to help ya out, earn my keep”.

I giggled “ya gonna be my housewife?”

Grinning up at me he slowly sat up on his elbow “househusband sounds better”. I felt my face heat up as I bit my lip avoiding his gaze “you asking me to marry you?”

He chuckled bringing his right hand up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear “of course not honey...don't wanna pressure ya into keeping me... we just met after all”.

I closed my eyes as he cupped my face “feels like I've known you forever”.

“I know baby” he rasped leaning closer as he gently brought my lips to his, our kiss slow and deep as I leaned over him.

My right hand raking through his hair gently as he slid his tongue against mine, pulling away just enough so we could breathe he let his eyes drift open as I met his gaze.

“I fucking love what you look like after we kiss” he whispered against my lips.

Running my tongue across them I smiled “I don't have a look” his teasing grin made my heart flutter.

“Yeah ya do…”

Sitting up the rest of the way, he gestured to my face “your lips stay open...your eyes get all heavy and shit...the most beautiful fucking blush spreads across your gorgeous face…”

I blushed even deeper before leaning forward to kiss him again “you have the same look” I breathed out, laughing lightly as he wrinkled his nose “I don't blush sweetheart”.

“Sure ya do” I smiled brushing the back of my hands up his chest making him shiver. Resting my fingertips against his collarbone, I let out a shaky breath “it starts, right about here…”

I slowly traced the bone with my fingers as his breathing increased, his eyes falling shut with a deep sigh.

Splaying my digits across his shoulders I slowly caressed up his neck “and makes its way up here to rest just below your eyes” I sighed running my thumbs along his cheekbones.

“Then you give me this tired smile while licking your bottom lip”.

I smiled as I watched him do as I described, his warm eyes fluttering back open to look at me.

“to-fucking-che baby” he purred “can't help it if you take my fucking breath away”. Leaning into his lips, I took a shaky breath as he slid his hands up my bare arms. Our lips meeting in a slow and sensual kiss, our jaws moving only slightly as the world seemed to stop around us.

“I never wanna stop kissing you” I whispered into his mouth as he pulled me closer, my legs moving so I was practically straddling his waist.

“So don't” he growled softly as he fisted my hair, sucking on my bottom lip before thrusting his tongue into my mouth with a deep hum.

Pushing over him gently as my hands gripped his face, I smiled brightly as he dropped back onto the carpet letting me continue to take the lead in our steamy make out session.

Sliding my lips to mouth at the side of his neck underneath his jaw. I purred as his hands gripped my hips, deep breathy moans puffing out past his lips. Moving against him subconsciously, I cupped his jaws as my mouth descended once more to his.

We were in our own world, our souls wrapping themselves around one another.

The loud knock on the door might as well of been a bomb going off.

Flinching Negan growled, rolling over so I was beneath him. Sitting up, his whole body tensed as he positioned himself so he was shielding me from whatever was intruding in on our privacy.

Placing my hand on his arm I tried to calm him “I gotta get that Negan”. He instantly shook his head “I'll see who it is”.

Cocking an eyebrow at him I chuckled “really...I thought you weren't gonna draw attention to yourself?”

His jaw ticked noticeably as he glanced at the door, the insistent knocking making him wince. Sliding out from under him slowly, I got to my feet his hazel eyes watching my every move.

“Be careful”

I smiled running my fingers through his hair “I'll be fine”. Leaning over, I kissed his lips gently before getting to my feet.

I could hear Negan getting up off the floor as I quickly grabbed my clothes, I wasn't sure who was at the door but I didn't want Negan getting the wrong idea.

Bouncing into my pj bottoms and tugging his white shirt over my messy hair, I quickly jogged to the door as three more knocks sounded.

Slipping the chain loose and twisting the deadbolt I slowly opened my door, furrowing my brow I fought to not visibly roll my eyes.

“Hey Tommy, what can I do for ya?”

The weasley looking man from across the hall shifted nervously as he blatantly took in my messed appearance.

“Hey...hey Lucy, you uh got company?”

Trying not to be nasty, I folded my arms before cocking an eyebrow at him.

“As a matter of fact I do Tommy, what'cha need?”

He gulped rubbing his hands together nervously “oh I...I was wondering if you'd like to catch a movie or something...but…”

Closing my eyes with a quiet sigh I gave him a soft smile “I'm sorry Tommy, I can't” gesturing behind me I gently cleared my throat “I uh got stuff...I gotta,straighten out, I'll talk to ya later ok?”

He nodded as I shut the door with a relieved sigh, Tommy was a nice enough neighbor and we could of been close.

But something about him sent my creep-o-meter skyrocketing, I figured he was harmless enough... but I still didn't like how obsessed he seemed to be with me.

Moving back into the living room I squealed as Negan's long arms snagged ahold of my waist. His mouth peppering my neck with sloppy kisses making me laugh “Negan st-stop”.

He chuckled biting my neck playfully “so who's the creep?”

Leaning my head back against his shoulder I smiled caressing his hair “my neighbor, he's harmless really”. Negan growled “He better be or he'll be getting my fucking boot up his ass”. I giggled turning around to kiss him deeply his rumbling purr vibrating against my chest as he leaned against the wall squeezing my ass.

“You sure your gonna be ok staying here by yourself while I'm at work?”

He smiled looking down at me with his beautiful smile “I'm sure I'll think of somthin to do while your gone”. He chuckled “may just sit around yanking it until you get home then cook ya dinner”. Laughing against his chest I fisted his shirt with a playful smirk “now you better save some for me big boy or I'll have to find ya a hobby”.

Growling as he mouthed at my neck he pulled me closer, his hands sliding beneath my waistband “giving you orgasms is my fucking hobby baby...making you happy is my full time fucking job”.

I blushed biting my lip “your so different than how I imagined”.

He frowned “is that a bad thing?”

Smiling up at him lovingly I cupped his face pulling him down into a smoldering kiss, our lips moving against each other slowly before I pulled back to rest my forehead against his.

“No”
