12 days of Mystrade and Friends - Third Edition
Tumblr media
Greetings!
November is drawing to a close, and for many of us, the winter season is about to begin. We are about ready to snuggle under blankets with hot chocolate or tea and, of course, a nice story!
We’d like you to join us in celebrating this season by sharing your creations! Consider joining the third edition of:
12 Days of Mystrade (and Friends) Advent Calendar
December 21, 2023 - January 1, 2024
We’re looking for new fanfic and art about Mystrade, Johnlock, or any other pairing within the Sherlock universe! Please note that general fics and art are also welcome! Your contribution can be a story, picture, video, collage – we are open to all kinds of art, as long as there’s some kind of winter or holiday theme. Go where your muse takes you – be it something fluffy, funny, or angsty! We also accept WIP, and there is no minimum or maximum word count or rating requirement.
Submissions are open until December 6th. Once they’re in, we’ll get back to you with a particular day for you to post your work on Archive of Our Own (AO3).
To sign up, fill out this Google form with:
your AO3 handle
the main pairing (if there is any)
how to contact you (for the date assignment)
a summary & the title of your work (if you have them - this is only to organize the calendar order - a general idea is also fine)
any dates you prefer and/or need to avoid.
If you’d like to submit more than one work, that’s great! Please submit a separate form for each piece.
Please submit by the end of the day on the 6th of December. You will be assigned a posting day by December 15th; the calendar will run between the 21st of December and the 1st of January.
If you have any questions, send an email or an ask, and we’ll answer as soon as possible! (Sadly we cannot answer a DM on Tumblr since this blog is run by multiple users - please send an ask or email to [email protected] instead!)
Last year, we had a successful calendar, if you’d like to see previous works!
We hope you will join us in making this holiday season very special!
Don’t forget to reblog to spread the word!

Do you have any recommendations for day by day fics like ficmas/advent calendar/autumnal days for example.
Like when the fic follows the characters for each day for a solid month
Anonymous asked: Love your page! Do you have any fics which follow John and Sherlock where each chapter is a new day or near daily where they are learning that they love each other?
Hey Nonnies!
Oh! This is a good idea for a list, LOL. PLEASE note that there is CONSTANTLY fics like this always being uploaded, especially in parts rather than chapters, so I'm just posting the ones I'm familiar with from my bookmarks that I know follow a "year in their lives" and then any series that I know also have this premise! I scoured my MFL list as well, so I most definitely missed some! Please add some more if you guys have any to add!

When this child is born, the angel comes into being to protect and care for them during their life on Earth. For John Watson, all he cares about in the world revolves around his Chosen, Sherlock Holmes. Watching him grow up though, the angel soon learns that God must have had a sense of humour the day he decided to make Sherlock, as trouble seems to follow him like a magnet wherever he goes. John can't decide what's worse, the idea of losing his Chosen one, or the fact that he may be breaking the most taboo law of heaven as he disguises himself as a human to better protect and befriend the beloved detective he's always watched from afar. He was meant to care for him. But what happens when caring evolves into something more? What happens when an emotion an angel is supposed to be incapable of possessing comes to life suddenly and viciously inside John's chest?

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged in this by the lovely and wonderful @themirokai. It's taken me a while to get to it, but here we are today.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
12
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
293,965 - respectable, I think. An average of 24,497 words per work.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Sherlock, Good Omens, James Bond, La Casa de Papel/Money Heist. I'm by far the most prolific for Sherlock. Would like to do some more LCDP one day, maybe even in Spanish. And I feel some Bridgerton (specifically Kanthony) might be inevitable one day.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
When It Rains - aka my completed Mystrade epic, 98,000+ words.
A Christmas Thief - my LCDP Raquel/Sergio advent calendar, based on the Netflix A Christmas Prince film. It is SILLY (affectionate). (41,000+ words)
Major Revisions - an enemies-to-lovers, academia AU for my eternal faves (it's Mystrade). Lots of silly Christmassy tropes here too. (27,000+ words)
A Series of Unfortunate Interruptions - Good Omens this time, wherein our favourite angel/demon duo cannot find a single moment alone to do some confessing and/or kissing. (8000+ words)
Plan Normandy - my LCDP fix-it, where the gang escape the Bank of Spain together, and have to decide what it is they're going to do next. (19,000+ words)
Note: all these fics are complete!!
5. Do you respond to comments?
I do! I don't always get to them immediately, particularly when real life is busy, but I will get back to everyone, at some point. And I always read them, and appreciate them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
By an absolute country mile, it's Ashes, from my old FF.net account. Because that site doesn't have AO3's comprehensive tagging, let me add the warnings here: major character death, graphic drug use.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think A Christmas Thief/Major Revisions/Plan Normandy are all pretty soppy by the end. But most of my recent fics have happy endings, even if I enjoy the anguish in the middle.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I haven't. I got one kind of negative comment in a bookmark, but I understand that wasn't meant for me and, after I'd got over the initial upset, I realised they weren't actually wrong anyway.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Occasionally, as part of longer stories. It's usually not particularly graphic - the longest and most detailed is Chapter 5 of Fire Dancing with Snow, if you want to get an idea.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not yet! Maybe one day.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I haven't, I don't think.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Also no: I think I could, if we agreed the overall plot together and then wrote sections solo (and gave feedback). But I couldn't sit down with someone and discuss a fic line by line.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
It had to be Mystrade. I'm not always fixated on them, the fixation ebbs and flows, but they are the ship that has endured longest in my mind.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I don't think there's a fic I want to finish that I doubt I will. There's at least one I don't want to finish because I dislike it (In My Blood I Felt Bubbles Burst, sorry), but if I want to finish it, then I'll finish it (unless I change my mind). It might just take me a long time.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I like metaphors, and kind of poetic description (particularly of feelings). I do, of course, need to be careful not to overdo it, but I think I often do hit the right note, and am able to describe complex feelings in quite original ways.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Over-writing, I think. I'm very wordy, and I can get stuck in minutae that not a single person (including me) cares about. I'm getting better at recognising when it's happening, but it's still definitely a weakness. Plus, planning out a bit elaborate plot, but then leaving it too long between chapters so I have to re-read absolutely everything to avoid plot holes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I wouldn't write dialogue in another language in my English fics, unless I had help from a native speaker, as otherwise the level would be too far below my English level. But I've written a few bits and pieces in Spanish, and I'd like to continue improving my proficiency there.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Doctor Who! Picture this: I am 13, and I am heartbroken after Doomsday. I decide I'm going to fix it.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
I'm going to go When It Rains, I think. This might be because it's got a lot of positive attention and that contributes to my warm feelings about it, but I do re-read parts of it sometimes, and it very definitely falls into the 'this is exactly what I want to read' camp, which I think is important in your own fics.
I hope you enjoyed this! And, either way, I am going to tag a few people, just in case you'd like to do this. No pressure of course, it is a little time-consuming: @the-toad-in-your-piano, @ewebie, @evendale, @brigwife, @feeisamarshmallow... and you, dear reader, if you so wish. Please tag me even if I've not tagged you, I'd love to read your answers!

You make everything better
Summary
Mycroft didn't like the Christmas season but that was before Greg.
Notes
3rd December Prompt :  "I usually hate the holiday season, but it's a little more bearable with you."
On AO3
Rating G - 264 words
Tumblr media
The wind was particularly cold and biting but Mycroft didn't feel it.
The cold didn't matter as he had Greg's warm hand in his as they strolled through the streets of the city to admire the Christmas illuminations.
"Mycroft, look!"
It wasn't the first time Greg had drawn Mycroft's attention to this or that decoration, and this time Mycroft didn't look right away because he was so captivated by another sight.
That of Greg's face at this moment.
The cold did not matter, in front of the eyes filled with a gleam of wonder, the cheeks reddened by the cold and the bright smile on the face of his lover.
He couldn't help but whisper softly, "Beautiful."
"Yes, really beautiful."
Greg answered and then turned his face towards Mycroft. He saw that Mycroft was looking at him and not at the display above, and realizing that it wasn't decorations that Mycroft was talking about, his cheeks flushed even more.
With a soft smile on his lips, Mycroft raised his free hand and caressed Greg's cheek, who leaned his head against it instantly.
He said softly, "You know Greg, I usually hate the holiday season, but it's a little more bearable with you."
Greg chuckled softly and asked with a raised eyebrow, "Just a little?
Mycroft leaned in and whispered softly against Greg's lips, "everything is so much more bearable with you, my love."
He pressed his lips to Greg's in a soft kiss and the cold continued to not matter, even as the snow fell around them.
Because Greg always made everything more bearable.
_________
Still not beta'd
Still not my native language
Still hoping you'll enjoy this story  🥰
Still thanking you for bearing with me 😝

20 questions, writer’s edition! (thanks @britsgovernmentmh for the tag!)
How many works do you have on AO3?
Today is June 27, 2022, and I have 85. (When did that happen? And it doesn’t count the 5 WIP I’ve hidden.)
What’s your total AO3 word count?
186,337 An average of a bit under 2,200 words a fic, which makes sense. I write short, because I have more ideas than I have time to realize.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Sherlock (TV) is the vast majority. The only other fandom I’ve written for (and created, by the way) is the Locked Down movie, which is terrible, but Mark Gatiss is cute in it, and I gave his character Donald more of a happy ending. There are two (2!) stories for that film’s character, created as a MGAS memento.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
“Mycroft in Fashion”, unsurprisingly. Greg reflects on different pieces of Mycroft’s wardrobe. Long, chaptered fics get more attention, and I like to think this concept captures a lot of what we know and like about the character. (It’s a surprisingly flexible framework.) It’s been something I’ve been writing on for almost two years now.  https://archiveofourown.org/works/26606602
“Five Times Greg Called Mycroft "Kitten" and One Time Sherlock Did” https://archiveofourown.org/works/33887575 I thought this would be a silly little chapter about old movie dialog, but it turned into a 5+1. The characters ran away with the story. And then they got a cat.
“In Spite of Myself” https://archiveofourown.org/works/35416684 It’s Christmas! And somehow I got a text fic inspired by someone else’s PWP. I still intend another chapter to this, some time (next holidays, perhaps) as I left them with the threat of Mummy meeting Greg.
“The Soulmate Search” https://archiveofourown.org/works/22777495 My first fic, part of an event week back in 2020. I was blessed with all kinds of encouragement, for that reason. Probably still my most authentic Mycroft voice, as I’ve softened him a lot as I kept writing him.
“Gin and Tonic” https://archiveofourown.org/works/24373948 The second of my Mystrade Cocktails series, and the one with the most chapters.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes, mostly to say thank you, because I’m very grateful to anyone who reads my work, let alone bothers to say something in response.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don’t write angst. Happy endings only. (I do know what I would write for a World’s Angstiest Mystrade Fic contest, but why would I?)
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
That’s a tricky question. “Kitten”, mentioned above, has both brotherly apologies and a marriage proposal. But I’m still fond of “Autumnal Passage”, which was written quickly to meet an event schedule and is something of a change for me in focusing on mood and description a lot more than I usually do. https://archiveofourown.org/works/26488894
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? No, unless you count “Greg Headroom”, which is heavily Max Headroom-influenced. https://archiveofourown.org/works/25271710
Have you ever received hate on a fic? No, thank goodness. I know some people don’t care for my style of work, but everyone’s entitled to their opinions, and nothing works for everyone.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Depends on the definition. I have written mature-rated fic, where sex takes place, but I don’t write very explicit scenes. I tend to focus more on the relationship, less on the mechanics. (Although I admire and enjoy works by those who can and do write that style.)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone asked about translating “Mycroft in Fashion”, but I never heard back, so probably not.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes. The one year we managed to do an advent calendar of 12 Mystrade works, we had a slot fall through at the last minute, so my co-organizers and I co-wrote “What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?” in a day. I thought it turned out pretty well, although both of them seem to have disappeared from online now.   https://archiveofourown.org/works/28485759
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Mystrade (Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade). My one and only.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
One of my hidden WIP was horror-inspired, and I intended to turn it into a ridiculous comedy (think Mars Attacks style), but now I’m wondering why I’d bother going back to it. It was based on a nightmare I had about Mycroft, decapitated, but still talking and still running the British Empire. I don’t know enough about horror to do it properly, I think.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, definitely. Understanding my characters’ mindset and background. Writing adults. And I am very good with spelling and grammar and all those details because I did a brief stint as a copy editor.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. I don't think visually naturally, so I forget at times I have to tell people more details about the scene I’m envisioning or the characters’ moods or remind them where characters’ hands are.
I write short and direct, and sometimes more detail or elaboration would be a good thing.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I don’t. I don’t speak anything but English and restaurant French, so I wouldn’t try to include another language.
One of the things that amazes and astounds me about fandom is the terrific work non-English-speakers do in a language that isn't their first. And then they apologize for it!
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Mystrade (Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade). And only, just about.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh, that’s a difficult question. Two of my favorites right now are:
“Mycroft in Costume” https://archiveofourown.org/works/28927701 Because it was inspired by Mark Gatiss pretending to be Jon Pertwee in his TV movie, and I’m also a Doctor Who fan.
And this one kind of sums up the appeal of the ship for me.  “Oh, Thank God, Sherlock Found a Friend” https://archiveofourown.org/works/32096848 AKA why Mycroft and Greg weren’t in episode two of the show.
Thanks so much, if you made it to the end of this!

Calendar Announcement ❤️
Hey, folks. We have three days until the calendar would be due to start, which means this is probably the best time to make this call. We’ve held on in case there was a sudden rush of submissions, but it’s looking like the calendar is going to take a hiatus for 2018.
We’ve fallen too far short of the necessary 24 submissions to feel safe going ahead. If we only needed a couple more pieces of content, we’d make a push and get those slots filled - but as it is, fewer than half the days have guaranteed content.
This means we’d run the risk of sad empty days with nothing to post (possibly a lot of them) or our organiser having a very stressful December struggling to fill thirteen slots at the last minute. It’s likely the calendar would collapse halfway the month - which would be far too tragic for Christmas.
We’re sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to the calendar. As a silver lining, it means our Mystrade content creators don’t have to worry about deadlines or calendar slots anymore. Everyone will be free to post their content whenever, and we can still enjoy plenty of gorgeous Mystrade fics and art.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our participants and followers for your support, especially to those who submitted content. ❤️

All my winter/yule/Christmas Mystrades in one place. I've done more of these than I thought.
The most recent is Send Three and Fourpence, We're Going to a Dance, wherein Mycroft has no idea how to court someone he admires, while trying to prove nobody else is good enough for his Gregory. Written for the Mark Gatiss Birthday auction, won by @johannadc to whom thanks are due for that wonderful prompt.
Winter's Tale is bitter sweet for me. It was written for my soulmate and bff who wrote under the pseud Krekta on AO3. I lost her nearly seven years ago and she never lived to see how the story ended. I posted the final chapter the day after she died, as a tribute.
Miracle on Islington High Street includes a bit of magical realism, with a wish spell, a Holmes family Christmas and good deeds being done.
Lord of Misrule is my Medieval fantasy AU, with Greg as the local blacksmith, and Mycroft as the recently bereaved and thus newly elevated Lord of the Manor. The two find solace in each other at Yuletide.
There are two series set in wintertime.
Winterlight Mystrade is set in Scotland, with the first part, Winterlight, being a bit of a far fetched romance, but it does have Greg in a kilt, in the snow. There's only one bed, and the boys are snowed in. There are two stories in the series, the second being Winter's Awakening. Be warned, sex in the snow means they have an explicit rating, as if Greg in a kilt didn't warrant that already.
Evening the Odds is set in York, at Christmas and New Year. Evening Out the Odds was written for the 2017 Mystrade Advent Calendar. Mycroft retreats to a quiet place away from London, where his face is unlikely to be known, in an effort to find peace, post Sherinford. Greg, worried about him, attempts to follow. Odds On Favourite is the sequel.
On a different note, Fairytale of New York is not a Mystrade, but its still a winter one. It's a Torchwood story, Jack and Angelo's Christmas, slightly AU, but close to canon.
Compliments of the season to you all, and thank you for reading, following and commenting. Here's wishing you a prosperous and healthy 2023.

Tinder: A Christmas Tale | Chapter 1
On Christmas Eve, Greg Lestrade accidentally swipes right on Mycroft Holmes.
It doesn't matter though, does it? Because he won't see unless he swipes right too, and there's no way - there's no way -
The thing about Christmas, though, is that unexpected things happen.

Mystrade Advent Calendar
@bitemebat posted this and it's actually a great idea.
I don't have a planned fic for the Mystrade Advent Calendar so...
If there’s a trope or a scenario you’d like to see me tackle, please let me know. Reply here or send me an ask, I’m not picky. No guarantees, of course, but maybe it’ll give the muse the poke in the behind she needs…
