The bizarre thing about Madara and Tobirama is that you'd THINK Madara absolutely hates Tobirama more than anything on account of Izuna (and some fic characterizes him like this) but he kinda just...doesn't?

Oh, he sure doesn't like him. He totally thinks Tobirama is out to get him circa Konoha creation, he says as much to Hashirama.

But is this really how you talk to a guy who you think ruined your life, who drives you into a berserker rage? A guy you blame for everything?

He's not terribly interested in personal revenge on Tobirama! Yeah, he'll stuff him full of rods (cough) when the opportunity crosses his path, but the idea of revenge on Tobirama never distracts him from the moon plan.

They have such a strange vibe between them. I wouldn't call it 'respect,' but it's more like a cosmic awareness and acceptance that they're both cogs in a larger machine. They know that the other didn't choose to deal them a shitty hand. There's a degree of almost professionalism in the way Madara talks, and that's not really what you'd expect from a guy whose motivation is going crazy mad after his brother died at the hands of this guy.

These two. Bizarre men. Unfathomable vibes.

I know you like shuggy but do you think there’s anything that makes you ship mishanks? Do you think their bond is also special and deeper? They do have history and some ppl think Mihawk was in shanks crew at some point. What are your thoughts on them? They are even more popular than shuggy so there has to be sth since so many ppl see them in this way

Have to admit, I've always been kinda indifferent to Mihawk as a character. (When first reading OP back in… god, 2003? oh my god, I'm ancient—anyway, I was a very basic Zoro girlie who only saw Mihawk as an obstacle to his dream.) Though I do find Vampire Swordsman Living In A Pirate World to be very fun, aesthetically, as a character I find him pretty inscrutable & hard to care about.

But it's not like I don't see it. Mishanks isn't for me, but it's not just a "two beautiful men smirking at each other" ship.*

Mihawk, like Buggy, thinks of or brings up Shanks in moments when he really doesn't need to. (Mentally apologizing to Shanks for fighting Luffy! What on earth.) Shanks can convince Mihawk to relax and have a drink with his crew, though Mihawk is almost always shown to be alone and happy that way.

But so much of their dynamic and history has to be read between the lines, and I find that frustrating. I want answers! Canon answers!!

Like: why did they have those epic fights (which even Whitebeard spoke of with respect) when they were younger—was Shanks trying to take Mihawk's title, or were neither of them at the level of the World's Greatest yet? (Side note, I would love to know who Mihawk beat to get that title and when.) Does Mihawk refuse to fight Shanks these days because he thinks a one-armed swordsman is a bad fight? Or is he trying to preserve the memory of their last fight as near-equals?

(Or… I can't speak to all of Shanks' fights since he lost the arm, obviously, but in present day it's notable that he only pulls out his sword as the nuclear option. I wonder if Shanks just can't do casual, fun fights anymore, the same way he can't relax on enemy ships.)

Was Mihawk ever a member of his pirate crew? I for one can't see him as an ex-Red-Haired Pirate—for one because he's such a goth loner it seems like a bad culture fit, but for another because I think it would have been brought up in canon. The Marines made Buggy a Warlord because of his history with Shanks; if Mihawk had been a member of his crew, wouldn't that make Buggy redundant? That said, I can see Shanks trying to use their fights as a recruitment tool—"If I win this time, you'll join my crew!"—but I don't think it worked out.

Basically, I'd say there's a decent ship there in theory, but for me to get into it I'd need a lot of things that have been left implicit to be spelled out.

Which could happen! Maybe Buggy going after the One Piece and dragging Mihawk in his wake is going to force him to reveal a hidden detail about his history with Shanks that makes him reluctant to fight him anymore…

*Though imo that is part of why they're more popular; for a long time gay ships in English-language shonen fandom (& probably others, but I'm just speaking from my experience) were exclusively about basic-ass hotties. You'd have to ask me about my days in Naruto fandom if you want that salt, though. (Please don't. That's such a dark path to ask me to go down.) Another reason is that we see Shanks & Mihawk interact in present day hundreds of chapters before Shanks & Buggy. Early interaction = early establishment of the ship = long fandom history/staying power.

Definitely Obito, yeah. To a lesser degree, Minato. Except with Minato I was like, "Well, he's hot, and I think it would be hot if he had a mean girlfriend. Surely I can make him interesting."

I can't really think of anyone else. I tried to make Rin interesting to me ages ago with an unpublished one-shot, and it didn't work, lol. Nightshade made Shizune 0.2% more interesting to me, but.... meh. Meh. Similarly, I had a blast writing By the Punchbowl but neither Gaara nor Sai call to me outside of "Do I want this specific flavor of Weird right now?"

Unfortunately, for all of these characters, me deciding I really like the version that lives in my head doesn't mean other people are writing that version. >:(

His sarcasm and dry humor. And (last thing I promise) when he gets so indignant after Nart mistakes his jutsus for Minato's. (i literally named almost everything whoops)

HashiTobi obvs. I think their brotherly relationship is cute. Hashirama is the older sibling and yet the one who is more responsible and level-headed is Tobirama. Also the fact that Tobirama lived his life to realize Hashirama's dream of his village--as he knew Hashirama was a visionary but lacked the concrete know-how to actually execute his vision.

I have two.

TobiIzu in the way that they were true equals and I headcanon the idea that while Tobirama harbored the generational mentality that Uchiha were evil, he was also very fascinated by the Uchiha in general because of their traditions/prowess, and Izuna's strength and abilities in particular were so intricate, it was his favorite thing to study. Izuna got under his skin (which amused Izuna) and Tobirama couldn't help but be interested and in awe of him despite his pesky beliefs about the Uchiha. I believe he felt heavy guilt when he killed him.

TobiKaga in the way that Kagami was the only Uchiha ever to gain Tobirama's utmost trust. I want to know so badly how Kagami was able to obtain it. I believe Kagami was a very sunny-personality-type, who inherently understood where Tobirama was coming from and had unwavering respect for him. The beautiful "you are my exception" trope. I support the headcanon that Kagami got his Mangekyo after Tobirama left to be the decoy.

I do enjoy me some MadaTobi/TobiMada, after all they are very similar and they butt heads to it's always fun to read fics where they're stubborn in admitting they're attracted to each other.

unpopular opinion

I don't believe he is prejudice against the Uchiha, I believe his misgivings about them are so ingrained (from growing up as Butsuma's son, having to view them as enemies all his young life) in his mentality that he refuses to give them up because that would mean admitting he's wrong which he never does.

I believe he did his very best to make sure Konoha would be successful and strong (creating the ANBU, delegating roles to clans, etc.) and the fact that some backfired was not his fault. He's only a person and did the best he could with what he had.

1. lee's better with words, gaara's better with actions, and they're both secretly envious of the other for it: my thoughts here are that gaara spent so much of his life not understanding love that he'd still struggle to articulate it in flowery ways that i think, as a born theatre kid, lee would be good at. but gaara would absolutely be that person who shows it in subtle ways -- like taking care of someone when sick, remembering food preferences, always ensuring lee takes care of himself when lee forgets or is busy having a self-flagellation moment. not that i think lee would be incompetent, but he strikes me as more of a scatterbrain, but would always be on top of verbal reassurances and affection (which i also think is what gaara would benefit from: clear straightforward declarations of feelings and intent)

2. they're both super cuddly in private look, you put together a touch-starved former monster vessel and a social outcast who mostly knows touch from violence (until gai) and you are going to get some clinginess imo. you can't convince me they're not the kind of people who would sit side by side at the dinner table so they can eat holding hands. bro (emotional)

This is regarding an oldass post but- you said Madara got abandoned by his bloodline and thus sucked at leadership, iirc? Could you elaborate pls? Bc that haunts me in a 'it makes a lot of sense but how exactly did the trainwreck go' sense?

I was being a little facetious, of course. Madara isn't incompetent, and he never would have lasted as long as he did in a brutal war if everyone hated him.

But! But, but, but.

He completely falls apart when Izuna dies.

The Uchiha completely fall apart when Izuna dies.

That last bit in particular suggests to me that Izuna had a critical role in the Uchiha leadership; he performed a function that Madara just couldn't.

Now, it's not a sign of bad leadership to delegate a job to someone who's perfect for it--that's actually very responsible.

What is a sign of bad leadership is when you put your emotional meltdown above the lives you're still responsible for.

Leaders are allowed to have feelings and mourn, of course. But a leader also needs the humility to be able to say, "I can't make good decisions for the people I'm responsible for right now, I need to step back" and when Izuna dies Madara cannot do that.

Instead, he takes Izuna's venomous last words to heart. He takes them as a mission statement, even. He doesn't consider, "do we have the resources to win this fight against the Senju?" He's only thinking, "I can't forgive them."

Madara put the words of a dead man above the well-being of the clan members who were still alive. He took people to battles they were never going to win and they got slaughtered because Madara cared more about the dead than the living.

Madara is the one who abandoned his bloodline. He stopped protecting them, stopped trying to keep them safe and make good choices for them.

The flashback features a panel of Uchiha deserting and surrendering to the Senju after Izuna's death because things are going so bad, and that says everything to me. Deserting a clan with centuries of pedigree and an exclusive bloodline? Looking at your leader and your enemy and deciding you're safer with the enemy? That must have been against every instinct in their body, but they still did it. That's the proof in the pudding to me--Madara must have been doing incredibly bad for his people to make that choice.

Madara's bloodline didn't abandon him; he abandoned them when he chose to drag out an unwinnable war for personal feelings. They simply reacted accordingly.

And this is why it makes perfect sense to me that the Uchiha didn't look kindly on Madara after Konoha was formed. They'd seen him at his worst and they'd seen what his real priorities are. He's still clan leader solely by virtue of his bloodline and Mangekyo at that point; if they had had a viable way to oust him, they absolutely would have.

This is also why it makes perfect sense to me why Tobirama is so adamant about Madara not being Hokage, and the people having a vote. Hashirama is blinded by his personal fondness for Madara. Tobirama can see that Madara's clan hasn't forgiven him, and he can see that every other clan also saw Madara's very public meltdown and saw his clansmen desert.

There's no way any other clan wants Madara in a leadership position over them after watching him crash and burn like that. There's even a very real possibility that forcing Madara in as Hokage like Hashirama wanted would have triggered a coup or rebellion!

How would you feel if, idk, Obama declared that Ron DeSantis was going to be President now? You'd think he was fucking insane, right? Dude has done nothing but prove he makes decisions by personal profit and not the wellbeing of the people he's responsible for. He could never be a good President.

Okay, now that the drama is thankfully dying down a bit I'm going to post one last thing.

I want to say that, first of all, to the person who made the call-out post: What the hell? From what I could see there was no community label, just a vague (and kind of small) NSFW warning on the og post. We have minors that use this platform and, guess what? Kids are curious and stupid! If you needed to post it for whatever reason, you could have easily cropped the picture to exclude the overly explicit content which would have helped somewhat.

Secondly, to the people who saw this post: I am so sorry. I hope my PSA helped prevent some people from seeing it, but if it didn't just know it fucked me up a lot too.

Thirdly, to the people on both sides making this into what feels like the middle of a conspiracy: Get a life, I understand being mad but I don't think this would have gotten out, thus becoming a problem, if it weren't for the call-out post in the first place!

If you could redesign Naruto and Sasuke's adult/B*ruto looks, what would you'd imagine them looking like? Hell, base them off of an AU where they leave and travel together if you'd prefer that!

For me, I'd have Naruto grow out his Shippuden hair a tiny bit and not have it be as floppy as it now is, switch out that cloak for an upgraded version of his long Sage Mode coat, have some of his Kurama-esque features show through (thicker whisker marks, sharper nails, sharper teeth/canines, almond-shaped pupils that contract and dilate like a cat's, irises that will more readily redden at intense feelings), a completely different style of shirt (maybe a jinbei-style top that's opened enough to show off his necklace), and have him carry around giant scrolls (I love all of the official art pieces and panels where Nart's lugging around scrolls). I'm still working out how I'd like Sasuke to look, but I'm envisioning a low ponytail or bun with hair that's slightly longer than the awkward length he currently has (or even his hair from the Blank Period, just slightly longer), and a cloak with a much higher collar (think Akatsuki coat height, to where the lower half of his face is obscured); typing this out, I think that tweaking his Blank Period look would be better than starting at his B*ruto look. 😅 And maybe, if for no other reason than Sasuke feeling sentimental, he could keep a small, hidden spot/accessory with his clan's mon that only he'd ever see? It just saddens me to see him no longer choose to wear it (and it makes seeing pinkie and the test tube kid flaunt it so casually all the more infuriating).....

Sorry for the ramble! My question still stands - how would you like these two to look, if you had the power to alter their current adult designs?

oh your naruto seems to look really nice, i’m honestly not the best person to imagine character designs and i’m also not good at describing clothes even in portuguese so lol english is even worse. i liked how you described naruto, but i wouldn’t keep the kurama features cause i associate them with when naruto is out of control, which i enjoy a lot, so it kinda loses its meaning when you have them all the time. unpopular opinion but i do not like sasuke with long hair lol, his duckbutt and bangs are much more pleasing to me, and i know he’s pretty in kishimoto’s design but this hair 👇🏼 is the limit to me and it still isn’t better than his part 2 bangs style or the blank period one with the cats, which btw also contains a nice outfit (yeah, the all black one).

BEST:

Kakagai - my eternal, my beloved, my reason for opening my eyes. They're just. So. Fucking. Cute. I love the idea that whether you ship them romantically or platonically, they're just... together. They come as a pair. It took them half a lifetime to get to that point, and they've suffered so much on the way - there's just so much loss and heartbreak on both sides. But the one constant point in both of their lives has been each other. I really don't have anything more to say about them, because just... :chef's kiss: they're perfect.

Then we have Obikaka. THE DRAMA. THE BETRAYAL. THE ANGST POTENTIAL. I suck that shit up like Hashirama sucks on his own lips where they grow out of Madara's immensely fucked up ribcage. It's basically Sasunaru but MORE DRAMATIC. Kakashi Unhealthy Grieving Processes Hatake fucking idolised Obito. He venerated him in his mind after his 'death', and rebuilt his personality around Obito's. He talked to him at that grave every damn day. All while Obito wasn't actually dead - he was building a faction of Konoha's worst enemies.

It would've been so simple to have Obito want revenge on Kakashi. And Kakashi kinda wants that! He wants Obito to hate him as much as he hates himself, for everything that happens and what he perceives to be his own, very personal failures. But Obito doesn't. It's blatant how much he still cares about Kakashi - he wants to force everyone into a dreamworld for his own sake, but for their sake, too. That's embodied in Kakashi: a 'perfect' shinobi who has in fact been used & abused by the system since he was five and is broken in so many ways because of it. Like, yes, Obito's whole shtick with wanting to force everyone to live in a perfect world is REALLY CREEPY AND CONTROLLING when you think about it (miss me with the 'Obito was a perfect misunderstood good guy' headcanons - there's some really interesting stuff to be picked into there, regarding how comfortable he is with trampling over everyone's consent). But the love beneath it? That's so fucking real.

And SNS lol. I mean, it's brilliant, it's practically canon, the entire plot hinges on it... some of the fandom is just very obnoxious lmao lkjdhkjfgjskdfgskdfg
