still laughing about this conversation i had with my grandma over dinner last night
i don't remember how we got on the topic but i'd been talking about how autism has always existed even before we had a word for it, yknow one of my usual soapboxes and stuff
and we were at a restaurant. on one of the tvs was a nascar race. and my grandma asks, do you remember when we went to the indy 500?
i'm just. yeah. I remember that it was LOUD.
in fact, that is the only thing I really remember at this point. to be fair, I was like... four? ish?
but yeah.
and my grandma's like yeah we knew you were Not Normal after that
now, I didn't get specifics, but considering that all I remember was how loud it was, it's pretty obvious I got hella overstimulated and probably went into shutdown
and here i am now, just shy of twenty fucking nine, and i'm sitting here like. and still none of you thought that maybe that was worth investigating further? 😂
no shade on them, lbr if I had an autism dx on paper my life would have turned out very different and probably not in a good way, but it is funny. even moreso now as I realize just how many of my cousins are also neurodivergent LOL

Unusual Model Train Sets
A long time ago in 2020, I did a thread on Twitter of unusual model train sets. Mainly to showcase some that don't seem real, but are/were. Here's a selection of such trains.
Tumblr media
I pity the fool who doesn't have this set.
Tumblr media
It's more than meats the eye.
Tumblr media
Our secret weapon in defeating Cobra.
Tumblr media
I don't see a correlation between Rambo and trains to warrant this set.
Tumblr media
Of course. When I think of a hit comedy show about medical personnel during the Korean War, I think a train set would make sense given the context. (Friend of mine said the following:
Tumblr media
Though my point still stands just from the episodes I've seen.)
Tumblr media
This has the best '80s aesthetic I've seen for a train set.
Tumblr media
As someone who launched Hot Wheel cars in front or over trains, I legit think this concept is fun.
Speaking of Hot Wheels...
Tumblr media
As someone who still has this set, I can tell you that while it's fun, it's not compatible with HO tracks. A real bummer if you ask me.
Tumblr media
I have a soft spot for train sets based on tractor brands (I have relatives who live in Eastern Washington who collect old tractors). The only unusual thing I could find is when they are a passenger set.
Tumblr media
Which makes no sense considering what the IP is.
Tumblr media
I don't see the connection between auto parts and trains, but the Photoshopped image on the box is cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, don't see much of a connection, in this case of NASCAR sets. However, if your train is taking a left hand turn every time it goes around the track then it makes sense (I guess). And that is the list of unusual train sets I could find for this post. This is not meant to say they're dumb. I actually find sets like these quite entertaining and fascinating, particularly the TYCO sets of Rambo, GI Joe, A-Team, and Transformers just for how niché they were. And these came out around the time Shining Time Station premiered.
If you know any others, please reblog with the train set that you find unusual or barely has any connection to trains.

Notes on Liberty Media buying MotoGP (From Someone who’s had to go through this before)
Okay, this is going to come off as hypocritical seeing as I am 1.) American, and 2.) I was an F1 fan before I was a MotoGP fan, but please hear me out on this.
For context, I come from a family of F1 fans. My uncle has been watching F1 for nearly 40 years and F1 and NASCAR were the two racing series I grew up with. I remember what F1 was like before liberty media bought it, and call it rose colored glasses or nostalgia, but it was far better than it is right now.
What liberty media brought to F1 was a culture of celebrity worship, Americinization, little understanding of the sport and how it functions and it’s history, and an onslaught of people who have little care for the sport and only care about saying they watch it because watching the “pinnacle of Motorsport” makes them look cool.
I only remember hearing that F1 was the “pinnacle of motorsport” once or twice before liberty media took over, now it’s all I hear. People who were fans before liberty media took over, like my uncle, have had their opinions pushed to the side and treated like they don’t matter in favor of newer fans who don’t know the history of the sport.
Why am I saying all this? Because I’m scared this is going to happen to MotoGP too.
While I have not been a MotoGP fan for the same amount of time as I’ve been an F1 fan, I fucking adore this sport. At this point I can honestly say that I love MotoGP more than I love F1, and liberty media will probably take a lot of what makes MotoGP, well, MotoGP, away, just like they did with F1. I’m terrified that MotoGP will fall victim to the celebrity culture, Americinization, etc., that now permeate F1.
I’ve seen this film before and I didn’t like the ending. I’ve only been a MotoGP fan for two seasons but this sport is near and dear to my heart, and I don’t want to see another sport I love be reduced to a capitalist ploy.

Did Dale Earnheart pass away and Dale Earnheart Jr take up racing in his father's memory like Nascar? Also am I the only one who'd love to see that as a fan fic?
ive said something about this on my main account before and i was hoping i’d never see a day where someone would bring this up — but Absolutely Not.
it’s insensitive to dale jr AND dale sr to make his death something “fictionized”. i dont think its appropriate in any context to do this, and writing it as a fanfic would actually be sickening. i have very strong opinions about this, and for that im sorry, but out of every real life reference to the sport i think that yes, sure you can maybe acknowledge it as something that happened as long as you understand the horrible implications that come with it, but WRITING IT as a FANFICTION is crossing an insane line.
i think of jrs cameo in *cars 1* as just a silly cameo, like he does in most nascar movies that came out during his racing career (see: talladega nights), i dont take him as a canon character that needs to be acknowledged or written about, because hes just sort of there like every other background character — you dont catch people writing about them too often. compared to other drivers characters, like darrell and bob, or chase, ryan, bubba, and danny, where they actually hold a significance to the story, but don’t necessarily reflect their real life racing careers.
essentially, to sum it up, no. absolutely NOT. dragging dale srs DEATH into a fictional movie is insane. using his death as an angst point for a fanfiction is fucking crazy.

Learn something everyday
Welp, I spent the last 50 years thinking that "stock cars" were fancy hot-rods because any time I ever heard someone SAY stock car it was in the context of hotrodding, car shows, etc. Then, last night my son mentioned something about his own, slightly modified car "when it was stock" and I saw a post on here about the roots of Nascar/hotrodding as 'modifying stock cars' and. It turns out. That 'stock cars' are the normal ones. Which, perhaps, everyone knew but me.
Just a funny thing to realize after thinking of the term wrong for decades and not being a very car-oriented person to begin with.
but wait:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, the term seems to be used somewhat flexibly, and usually in the context of a car that has been souped up. So I wasn't totally wrong, just didn't know the origin.

hello hazel! first time watching the indy 500 yesterday and i just found it so strange and uncomfortable how all of the commentators were speaking about santino ferrucci. i didn’t follow the junior series till recently and even i found out about how much of a bad person he is.
everyone was actively rooting for him to win and i think i just kept muttering to myself “he’s a raging racist” the whole time and every time i thought they would stop, they would just bring him up again.
honestly, if they don’t care about what he did then maybe don’t vocalize that you’re ok with it? and anyone that says well maybe he’s changed, this guy has openly said he doesn’t regret what he did.
i don’t know, i just found the whole thing so bizarre because i didn’t realize that he was actually well liked in indycar for some reason.
cn: racist bullying, generally being an arsehole
so for anyone who doesn't have the context for this: in 2018 Santino Ferrucci was America's hot new Formula 1 prospect, signed to Haas as a junior and competing in Formula 2 with ehhhh I guess. some results. he'd scored points for Trident, which isn't a frontrunning team but good drivers have taken the car to wins.
his teammate was Arjun Maini, who during the French round gave one of the most desperate-sounding, saddest radio messages you've ever heard, sounding close to tears and begging "I swear you guys don't support me at all" and saying no one believed him about his car's performance.
at the time it was extraordinary but maybe didn't ring the right alarm bells. the F2 car was very tricky for teams to manage and even Maini's explanation, that parts were failing and he was losing pace compared to his teammate, more accused the championship of having a shoddy car than anything else.
Ferrucci didn't exactly seem nice. but then there was a battle at the front of the 2018 field between Russell, Albon and Norris that was fairly distracting so someone picking up the odds point finish wasn't getting too much press scrutiny.
then it gets to Silverstone and things explode. Maini is clearly miserable and at the end of the sprint race (which then was after the feature race, so this is Sunday) Ferrucci comes out of fucking nowhere and crashes deliberately into Maini on the in-lap. he's banned for four races for being a weapon and then it all starts coming out.
Trident apologise to Maini, who it turns out was totally right that his car was essentially being sabotaged by Ferrucci and was also being subjected to racist bullying by Ferrucci and his father. Ferrucci's also dropped for non-payment, in a statement that basically says we couldn't wait to find a legal way to get away from this asshole.
Haas bin him at the same time and that looks like the end of this wanker who adds 'texting while driving a racecar' and 'trying to run a MAGA livery' to his list of misdemeanours all over the course of the same weekend.
he does a bit more postural nonsense including claiming he can't be racist because he's Italian and then seems to go away. until 2019 when he turns up in IndyCar as darling of the year. I don't watch a lot of IndyCar but it was to pretty much everyone's dismay to find this dude being gassed up from the start and given opportunities to put his "behavioural incidents" behind him without any regret.
idk how much he actually changed even on an operational level within teams cus he did get binned out of Indy for a bit to NASCAR, which actually has a pretty strong anti-racism and anti-asshole thing going on so unsurprisingly he didn't last there. now he's back in Indy being gassed up as the next great American dream by anyone with a microphone and I can't tell you what the Penske corporation sees in him but it's always been this way since he rocked up there.
some of it is a bit of 'well screw Europe and their whiny moralism we're backing our boy' kind of thing but like. this wasn't 'oh no you don't have the correct experience of our intricate continental racing' this was 'fuck off, you racist non-payer who held a team ransom while abusing your teammate, along with your garbage dad.' I guess someone always has to be the worst cousin at the barbecue and like so often, they're the one with the sports medals lately.

heyy !! just to add on danica was also one of the first modern, not THE first but as of the 2000’s & first real popular female, driver in NASCAR. she gained her fame from her open wheel indycar driving talent & once she felt she had enough of it she switched to stock car racing with NASCAR. she wasn’t very good at it & constantly started fights with other drivers over the crashes she’s caused. if you’re interested this video explains it well in detail her fall from racing fame.
https://youtu.be/i537kMchN44?si=of67VRGYhyy3vvjR
during her time she had a nasty attitude towards many of her peers, coworkers & even fans. she always acted very entitled for whatever reason. as my friend once said, “ the fame went so far in her head she couldn’t find a way out. ”
i’ve known many people who’ve met her at meet & greets & all have said she has a very disgusting attitude. even one friend of mine has said she wouldn’t even look at him, talk to him & when he tried wishing her good luck she blatantly ignored him.
overall she’s genuinely unlikeable.
sorry for the essay, just wanted to share.

pls don’t apologize and thank you so much for the added context! i’ll admit i am pretty unfamiliar with nascar/indycar other than vaguely watching races in the background when i was a kid, so i wasn’t really aware of her other than commercials she did.
i think overall it really sucks to see her being given a platform (such as dts) because there are so many better voices we could be giving that time to! last season we had Susie Wolff as a commentator on dts, and now we’ve got Danica? idk not thrilled. i understand she’s a pretty recognizable person in the US and so that may be part of it but i was disappointed to see her in the first episode.

last double feature for a while: the incredibles (2004) and cars (2006)
The Incredibles is a movie that fails at criticism. not that it fails, in the face of criticism, no the incredibles is just hard to criticize, structurally speaking. The imagery, messaging and story, with director Brad Bird's recent slide into uh conspiracy fascism? the movie about great men held back by their government, and evil capitalists who seek to mislead the masses with faux super equality, takes sort of an odd turn from fun super hero world, to unfortunate at best, horrible foreshadowing at worst.
but I'm getting ahead of myself, the incredibles is primarily about everyman bob parr, former golden age super man, unsatisfied with his family life, working behind the back of his wife for bad people, she finds out and goes on the island looking for him when he disappears. watching this movie in the modern day always makes me think about incredibles 2, which i believe highlights what thoroughly unfun movie incredibles 2 is. comparing the two family dynamics feels like they all just forgot what happened between movies
I think i'm struggling to stay on task because the movie is standard awesome 2000s pixar but, in a way that feels refined by every movie previous, and this movie's focus on effects work improvement makes it pop in a way that their previous films simply couldn't. but aside from the context around the movie, it's most interesting aspects are the look, feel and texture of the super world, are hard to articulate, without just posting a clip. the soundtrack is nice, especially jazzy this time around which i appreciate, especially compared to our next movie.
the bottom line is that what makes incredibles is the texture of it, the world, the family, the performances, but as time has continued to pass, that texture has begun to bring the movie down in a really unfortunate way, fun movie, fuck brad bird 9/10
memorable bits: the family fights, frozone (why is he never important), syndrome that lava dining room, the team fights, the omnidroid
cars
cars is a 2006 dreamworks, i mean pixar film about a car who is a racer and also hates poor people, who gets stuck in a dying community in a canyon on his way to the big race. are people going to be mad if i say this movie suuuuuucks, where bugs life is "good for a kids movie" pixars cars feels like baby's first allegory. A sports movie about cars isn't really that much of a shake up when compared to a normal racing movie, and to make matters worse (or maybe maters worse) the world doesn't survive critical thought. why do the cars lock themselves, why do race cars not have headlights if they're also cars, why, if the community is dying, do they not just drive somewhere else all together and then have the same community. the answer is it's a kids movie don't worry about it but when the middle two acts are wacky car hi-jinks these questions surface naturally.
in terms of criticism, the movies world also effects the race scenes, they are so fucking slow. i know nascar races are long but every substantial race in this movie, and probably the franchise, feel like i'm leaving the movie theater and going to a real fucking race track to see the nastycars. also too many of the radiator springs gang remind me of one of the characters from bug's life, why are they all like racial car culture caricatures, for what purpose john lasseter. mater is not included in that but he gets special mention because he's cute in this movie but for like, a scene? too much of the movie feels like its spent on "yep the race is still goin on" but those parts might be the best part of the movie. 4/10
memorable bits: i love mack, realizing this movie made me hate owen wilson, the tongue three way tie, car tramp stamp, car cop mustache, car ageism, the italian car and his husband, the car that kept getting paint jobs, the paint job lightning gets that lasts fuckin 10 seconds i swear, "gee mater, it sure is nice to be back in radiator springs", his manager car that's like a phone? is that the bit that he's just a phone on the other end? the drive in

ay I ask, What are some activities that rush and ambush like to do with each other? (cuddling, play fighting, talking walks together, etc nice wholesome shit)
Oh, they gay gay fr:
Cuddling, play fighting pretty much the stuff you listed. Rush loves to be stroked like a big happy kitty as well as being held. Ambush loves being the little spoon too.. goodness those big hands are warm.
So in the ambush headcanons, I mentioned that Ambush and Rush get pretty scuffed up by the end of a week thanks to crucifixes and exhaustion. So, sometimes Bush will chill out in an ice bath. What I neglected to mention was that ice is a precious resource, so chances are that bath is going to be shared with atleast one..perhaps even two other entities. Rush will sit there submerged in ice with it and just.. become a Rushsicle. Sometimes Rush eats the ice and Ambush will listen to the contented sound of “crunch crunch crunch.”
Race eachother around the hotel like it’s nascar.
Loot people’s bodies for goodies and review them excitedly.
They Eat someone together. Imagine they do be eatin though and that one scene from lady and the tramp happens but it’s with someone’s intestines. The point is date night is usually messy for these two. They don’t do picnic blankets and roses, that’s Seek’s sorta thing.
Drink lots of basement wine until they inevitably pass out curled up around each other.
Sleep. A lot.
Play with their cute lil kids.
Play with their not so cute fully grown kids who..nowadays go by numbers for some strange reason but they support them nonetheless!
Ambush will occasionally preen Rush’s unruly fog and in exchange Rush will mess around with its lover’s ratty hair.
Rattle. No other context just rattle.
Rush likes to chew/play/twirl on Ambush’s tail when bored. Ambush enjoys this vehemently.
They take a book from Figure’s library and read to each other when they are feeling tame.
If sunlight does reach the hotel, they often cuddle near a window to feel it’s warmth.
Considering the fact their faces are like that 24/7 that shits gotta ache so maybe they massage it.
Usually they fall asleep the ambient noises the other makes. The soft bzzz..of Rush is a comfort noise for Ambush.
If one’s sick, it won’t leave the other. Ambush especially.

danny for the ask meme <3
Ignore the fact this took two months, my bad!
Realistic
It’s canonical he’s a bit of a man whore so it’s realistic to assume he’s got an illegitimate kid or two running around somewhere. “Already got one bastard in my life, don’t need another one” got a WHOLE new context with this (though to be fair, I don’t even know what the context was in canon— was he referring to Lincoln??)
Unrealistic, but funny
The exact same thing as above but he likes men too. No risk of kids at least! (Lincoln does not want to think about having some random guy’s… shit in his car.)
Heart-crushing and awful
His whole story is kinda a tragedy but I don’t think he actually remembers his mom well. He’s always had Nicki and his dad is… around, but his mom just feels hazy. In my canon she left rather than died, which only makes it worse— Nicki never told Danny she was alive out there somewhere, but he did meet her once as a teen and simply felt too strange to mention it to anyone. By that point, it was just the woman who birthed him, not his mother. Maybe it’s for the best.
Unrealistic, but fuck canon
He gives me Kentucky vibes. Maybe in a better world he’d move to Kentucky for a bit, dick off around there, fall in love with the area. No one else understands why he likes it, but he does. Louisiana has his friends and family, Kentucky has his heart. Also NASCAR, because of-fucking-course

It's been fun getting more into formula 1 even though it's been around me my whole life. Like it's been on the TV for every race since I was a kid but I never got into it (honestly I thought it was just a lot like NASCAR and that bored me out of my mind lol) but ever since I learned the rules it's been such an adventure and I'm having a great time catching up and getting context for stuff that has been around me since forever.
On the OTHER hand, it's really funny seeing all the drama and posts where people in different drivers camps attack each other and all the chaos surrounding this year especially.
It feels a lot like this:
