Re: the post I reblogged earlier, a series of Reid Wiseman's cool orbital photos taken on the ISS? Specifically, the first picture that has a bit of a mystery in it? This one:

I think I know what that is, and I am going to tell you how I figured it out (pre-emptive apologies to any South-East Asians who feel the urge to headdesk while reading this post.)

First off, all that green glow? It's on water. Check out a map of the area:

So why are there lights in the sea at night? Well, squid fishing happens at night, and the ships use bright lights to imitate the moon to attract the squid.

Here's a big squid-fishing ship, filmed by a drone off the Argentinian east coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It's got a bit of green going on.

Here's another one, photographed in the Pacific. Also some green here.

Both of those are, however, severely outdone in greenness by this small Thai squid-fishing ship.

Unlike the previous examples, it is in the right place and is, in fact, All Green. Boy, is it green. Look at how green it is. It is So Green.

Before you say that puny ships like that cannot possibly be visible all the way up to the ISS, consider: a) that there might be a bajillion of them, and b) the big ships are also out there in even bigger fleets, and they are bloody bright.

According to the Sea Shepherd organisation, who tracked a 300-strong squid-fishing fleet west of the Galapagos Islands in 2018, "the total luminosity of these vessels is said to rival European soccer stadiums". They waxed a bit poetic about them:

"Suddenly out of the darkness a towering intense white light showed on the horizon. Soon it was followed by others all around us, mostly white but some an iridescent green and others with dimmer yellow light. Looking out from the wheelhouse we seemed no longer to be on the open ocean but in the edge of some great coastal metropolis."

Here's part of a fleet of some 150 ships near Argentine.

And here's that same fleet again, managing to be a magnificent eyesore even at a considerable distance.

Sure, Argentine is pretty far away from Bangkok (though those ships might also be Chinese). But South-East Asia definitely has some of its own night-light activity going on. You can find a handy map at globalfishingwatch.org (go play with it, it's fun). It didn't have night-light satellite data from 2014, but here's a snapshot from August 2022 for comparison.

The map also shows national fishing zones. If I'm interpreting Wiseman's photo correctly, those green lights in it are in the Vietnamese, Malesian and Indonesian waters. So those are likely Vietnamese, Malesian and Indonesian squid-fishings ships (and maybe some other nationalities that maybe aren't supposed to be there; here's that Sea Shepherd page again and an article about the Global Fishing Watch project talking about that kind of thing).

What I sadly couldn't figure out is what kind of squid they're fishing over there. I was hoping it might be the Japanese flying squid, because then I would have a reason to put them in this post. Unfortunately, Japanese flying squids apparently don't live that far down South.

But I'm going to put them on this post anyway, because I just found out about them, and I mean, look at these guys:

They're like if a squid decided it wanted to be a flying fish and instead of making a deal with the sea witch, it went "I can do it! I can! I can!" They're sleek, attention-grabbing and ridonculous. They can fly over 30 metres in 3 seconds. And they're not being caught by the glow-in-the-dark squid-fishing fleet off the Gulf of Thailand because they don't live there, and therefore have nothing whatsoever to do with the rest of this post.

But they're cool.

Finally, a confession: I didn't figure out the lights because I know something about South-East Asian fishing practices (I know nothing, feel free to laugh and correct me), or because did some kind of a systematic elimination chain to eventually arrive at the answer (ahahahaha no). It's because I've watched the Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World nature documentary no less than three times in less than two weeks, and there's footage in it of this massive unnerving squid-fishing fleet, which you'll definitely remember if you've seen it once, let alone three times.

Why have I seen it three times, then? Obviously for very normal reasons. Not at all because the series is narrated by Pedro Pascal. I mean, who would opt to listen to Pedro Pascal talking very seriously about (occasionally horny) wildlife for 4+ hours while endearingly lisping his Fs and THs here and there? Not me, no. I am very normal about him and not at all soothed by his dulcet tones in my time of stress. Don't look at me.

i finished making my gear build for inkbrush yesterday.... i think i found my favorite weapon to play.... is this how you become a brush main

How was voting done in ancient rome?

Anon...you sent me down a whole rabbit-hole...and I'm still not quite sure I understand it all. But here's how I think it worked, and I welcome any corrections from folks who know more.

Rome's voting system changed a lot over the years. We have the most information about the late republic, so let's focus on that:

(I've left out the Curiate Assembly, which was mostly irrelevant at this point, and some other fiddly bits.)

Tribes and Centuries

If you were a Roman voter, you would be part of both a tribe and a century. Your tribe roughly meant which "region" your vote was associated with, though by the late republic people had moved around so much that didn't really mean anything. Your century was assigned by censors based on your wealth status. Only male citizens could vote, not women, slaves or non-Roman residents.

When you voted, the majority of your tribe or century's votes would all be counted as one vote in the election. If 60% of your tribe voted for Lucius Tiddlypuss, but you were one of the 40% who voted for Gnaeus Nautilus, tough shit. Tiddlypuss gets one vote counted and Nautilus gets nada.

To make things worse, not all tribes or centuries were equally powerful. The wealthiest centuries (equestrians and "first class enlisted") were much smaller than the poor and working-class centuries, so rich people's individual votes counted for more. And they got to vote first, and the election was over as soon as a candidate reached a majority of total votes, so poor centuries often didn't get to vote at all.

The tribal voting system was a little more fair. Its voting order was randomized. But since all elections took place in Rome, the rural voters who could make it were usually small in number - and rich enough to travel. So rural tribes were disproportionately powerful. Plus, the tribes were of different sizes again, so (for instance) freedmen's votes could be "diluted" by concentrating them in a few big urban tribes. Still, the tribal system was seen as more representative of the lower classes in practice.

On the upside, by this era, elections and plebiscites had written ballots that you could cast secretly. This reduced the power of patrons over their clients, and masters over freedmen.

Voting for People

To elect higher magistrates, like consuls, censors and praetors, you have to gather with your century in the Centuriate Assembly outside the city walls. Why? Because the Centuriate Assembly is technically based on soldier ranks, classed by how much gear each soldier could afford, and you can't be within Rome's city limit while in military formation. The tops "enlisted"-level centuries vote first, each century's vote counts for 1, then the equestrians vote in their groups, and so on until a candidate reaches over 50% of the total possible votes.

(Note: Cicero refers to 193 centuries, so most scholars believe that was the number in his lifetime. But not everyone agrees, and the Centuriate Assembly seems to have been reorganized a few times.)

Now let's vote for lower offices, like curule aediles, quaestors and military tribunes. The pontifices are also elected here. You can go back inside Rome's walls now, because the Tribal Assembly sorts voters into tribes, not military ranks. The order in which the tribes vote is randomized (in theory). If you're voting for a pontifex, only 17 random tribes out of 35 get to vote. Or, if you're living between 81 and 63 BCE, you don't get to vote for pontifices at all. Blame Sulla for that.

Finally, we'll vote in the tribunes of the plebs and plebeian aediles. If you're one of the 90%+ of Romans who are plebeian, you'll vote in the Plebeian Council, which works just like the Tribal Assembly except that there's a big "No patricians allowed!!" sign. Only plebs can vote, and only plebs can run for these offices!

Or at least, that's how most historians think it worked. It's not actually clear if the Plebeian Council was another name for the Tribal Assembly, a separate entity, or merged into it at some point. So whenever I say "Plebeian Council," put a mental asterisk after it.

Once someone is elected as a quaestor, tribune of the plebs, or a higher rank, he stays in the Senate for life unless the censors kick him out or a trial strips him of office. This year's consuls and praetors will become next year's proconsuls and propraetors, who govern provinces and sometimes take on other special assignments. Pontifices also hold their priesthoods for life, and can take on other jobs, too.

Voting for Laws

We've elected our dudes! Can you go home? Nope! Rome also has a lot of plebiscites, or referendums.

Most laws came from the Senate. The Senate voted on a bill, usually proposed by a consul, and if a majority of Senators approved the bill would go to the Plebeian Council. Most of the time, the Plebeian Assembly approved the bill, and it became law. But sometimes it refused, and the bill would either die, or have to be revised in the Senate before the Council would vote on it again.

Occasionally a tribune of the plebs would propose a bill directly to the Plebeian Council, without getting Senate approval first. Or, more rarely, a higher magistrate might. This was a great way to piss off the Senate! However, if the bill passed, the Senate had to abide by it anyway.

Changes to the System

Even just in the 54-year period I chose, the rules shifted sometimes. The biggest change was Sulla's constitutional reform, in which:

Tribunes of the plebs could no longer propose legislation or hold higher offices.

Thus, nearly all legislation came from the Senate instead of the Plebeian Council.

Pontifices were chosen by other pontifices, no longer elected.

The number of magistracies and overall size of the Senate was expanded.

Holding a magistracy of quaestor-level or higher automatically enrolled its holder in the Senate; before, that had to be ratified by the censors.

And more details, not related to elections and plebiscites, that I won't go into here.

Some of these changes were rolled back after Sulla's death. Tribunes were restored to their full powers by 70 BCE, and pontifices became publicly elected again from 63 onward.

Rome's last fully "free" elections took place in 50 BCE. After that, Caesar's civil war and dictatorship, his habit of appointing his supporters to government offices, and even more civil wars all fouled everything up. Augustus restored regular elections, but didn't step down, so they became little more than a popularity contest with no real power.

If you rewind back in time, you'll see other changes, too. Before 104 BCE, pontifices were chosen by other pontifices, just like Sulla preferred. Before 219, the Plebeian Council needed the Senate to ratify its laws, and before 287, its laws only applied to plebs. If you go way back to the 5th century, the Curiate Assembly I left out starts being relevant. There was a gradual shift toward the Plebeian Council gaining more power over time, and patrician-only offices gradually being opened to plebeians.

Inktober has come to an end...

Presenting weird Phyrexians 25-31!

25: This one is a bit abstract, based on the shape of a bacteriophage and the idea of floating geometric structures. An Orthodoxy sentinel of faith, equal parts garden sculpture and surveillance device.

26: Gitaxian nautilus/ammonite! One of the sea monsters Phyrexia developed after seizing the abyssal Fathom Ward from the Quicksilver Sea's researchers. It's got a spiral of blue eyes on its shell, which blink in a wavelike motion to mesmerize its targets.

27: It's common particularly among the Thanes and Progress Engine to send bloodsucking insects or other flying menaces after targets, in order to extract their oil so it can be used for scrying. Glissa decided she had enough of those games, and made her counterplay. This carnivorous plant lures in spybugs with its intoxicating oil smell--which can be altered to mimic the scent of a specific person--only to snap shut upon them when they land.

28-29: This one is marked as such because on the night of the 28th I sketched out a Gitaxian beholder, but on the 29th I decided to change it a little, in true Phyrexian fashion. Now it's more of an abstract sculpture, but roughly it's a floating aperture with a mass of tentacles coming out of it and a grasping limb dangling below to seize interlopers.

30: Two little guys for the price of one! The top one is simply a gear with legs--maybe you need your machinery to scuttle between structures when you're short on parts. The bottom one camouflages itself with the Glimmervoid hexplates on its back, and scuttles around with its cameras and eyestalks primed to collect visual data.

31: Dredged up from ancestral memory, deep within recollections of a faraway world, Phyrexian ichormages uncovered... the mighty horseshoe crab. The Orthodoxy and the Progress Engine put their own joint spin on it, with a porcelain head crest and needle tail, but the resilient creature escaped the laboratory of its creation. Now its brethren scurry across the Seachrome Coast, catching travelers unawares.

Main character in the book, the naturalist whatshisname, didn’t gush over the sub for chapters and chapters, didn't ad drop for a gear shop in Paris that definitely doesn't exist anymore, and loved the ship so much he didn't mind the fact that he and his friends had been kidnapped and held against their will, for me not to nominate The Nautilus.

(The book is such a trip to read. The protagonist is so unintentionally funny.)

The Nautilus was supposed to be a futuristic version of what technology should be capable of in some decades. Electric long lasting lights, technical design that allows it to dive to unrivaled depths and speed, a research vessel, etc. It was such an influential ship for the sci-fi genre that I believe it's the most well recognized fictional submarine there currently is.

Who asked for this? No one, this is for ME lmfao

NOW ONTO THE ACTUAL GOOD STUFF: Talking about the TDIWT comps (main weapon + main gear abilities) and why I think they'd have the type of loadout pictured!

Characters below marked with a ❥ symbol next to their name are ones I refuse to change since I think they're perfect, but others are up for discussion & feedback! I purposefully prevented duplicate weapon selections since I wanted to challenge myself a lil bit and give everyone their own unique comp!

BLAINELY ‒ Splattershot Pro / Opening Gambit / Special Power Up / Ink Saver (Main) Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? I'm not too familiar with her personality since I FORGOR but she seems like the type to be kinda cutthroat on the field. Angle shooter to throw the enemy off & popping her Crab Tank when she wants to be very aggressive! Opening Gambit bc she wants to go headfirst and send a message, Special Power Up to Crab Tank more, and Ink Saver to shoot more! Loves TC so she can ride the tower and feel unstoppable!

LINDSAY ‒ Splash-o-matic / Ink Recovery Up / Ink Saver (Main) / Run Speed Up Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? She heard that the Splash was REALLY good and thought that just having it would make her a better player. She copied her main abilities from Beth and she's lucky they work out for her, but they aren't top tier for her weapon or playstyle. Throws a lot of burst bombs, rarely uses the Crab Tank wisely. Loves Turf War because it's got the easiest objective!

❥IZZY ‒ Custom Splattershot Jr. / Swim Speed Up x3 Fav Mode: Clam Blitz Why this comp? She wants to make everyone regret playing the game, constantly throwing torpedoes and using her wave breaker to slow down the enemy team. All her gear ability slots are dedicated to swim speed so she can escape sticky situations as fast as possible. She's got a goofy comp but she's a terrifying player. Loves CB because she has an excuse to make the MOST advantage of her speed ability & annoy the opposing team!

❥DJ ‒ Nautilus 47 / Ink Resistance Up x2 / Ink Recovery Up Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? He doesn't wanna hurt anyone and he's scared of getting splatted so he chooses the long-ranged Nautilus 47! Point Sensor helps his teammates do all the work of getting splats & Ink Storm allows him to weaken the enemy from a distance without splatting them (unless they're dumb enough to stand in the storm). He has x2 Ink Resistance because he doesn't wanna get splatted and Ink Recovery to recover ink faster. Loves Turf War because he doesn't have to fight if he doesn't want to, he can just ink up the floor instead!

LESHAWNA ‒ Tri-Slosher / Special Power Up x2 / Ink Saver (Main) Fav Mode: Rainmaker Why this comp? Leshawna seems like the type that'd love to get up close and personal enough to annoy people with the power of her tri-slosher! Toxic Mist slows down her enemies and she takes immense advantage of the Inkjet to snipe them or fly away from danger. She uses two Special Power Up abilities so she can use her Inkjet for longer and has Ink Saver so she can keep on sloshin'! Loves RM because she loves making people drop the rainmaker & popping the bubble before anyone else does!

BRIDGETTE ‒ Dapple Dualies Nouveau / Run Speed Up / Swim Speed Up / Ink Saver (Main) Fav Mode: Splat Zones Why this comp? She wants to move smoothly and quickly to evade enemy fire! Overall just a typical player, chill and wants to complete the objective without focusing too much on getting splats. Her main abilities reflect this: Simple but effective. Loves using her torpedo for distant shots and the Reefslider for fun (doesn't always end well for her lmfao). Loves SZ because she doesn't have to focus on the entire map, just that one small zone! It's the best spot for her to use her Reefslider!

❥COURTNEY ‒ Splat Dualies / Opening Gambit / Haunt / Ink Resistance Up Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? Similarly to Bridgette, she uses the dualies class to evade enemy fire and move around quickly. She loves using her suction bombs to surprise splat any enemies that jump near her location. She knows that the Crab Tank is the best special in the game and she uses it to her advantage. She uses Opening Gambit to fly headfirst into the field and fight her enemies. She uses Haunt as a way to find whoever splatted her and get revenge on them. Ink Resistance helps her roll through enemy ink and be a more sturdy opponent. She's very goal-oriented and leads her team to complete the objective above all else, but be warned: if she starts getting splatted too much, she becomes a force to be reckoned with. Loves TC because she gets to spam suction bombs onto the tower and make it virtually unable to be climbed by the enemy team.

❥EVA ‒ Luna Blaster Neo / Last-Ditch Effort / Haunt / Run Speed Up Fav Mode: Rainmaker Why this comp? Luna Blasters are a little slow but they do high damage which she loves. She tosses Fizzy Bombs to get closer to the enemy and stamps the shit out of people (or throws it at anyone she sees in a high, unreachable place). She has Last-Ditch Effort so she can make a comeback at the last minute and make any necessary push against the enemy. Loves RM because the Rainmaker is like a funky blaster, she absolutely murders with it and is decent at paving a way for herself with it despite being vulnerable!

❥DUNCAN ‒ Grizzco Blaster / Opening Gambit / Ninja Squid / Drop Roller Fav Mode: Clam Blitz Why this comp? He doesn't play by the rules, he probably smuggles (or hacks in) a Grizzco brand weapon, specifically the blaster since it's the class he prefers. He loves the rapid fire rate of the weapon and just how deadly it is to other people who don't see it coming. The kit would come with the Range Blaster's kit: Suction Bombs & the Wave Breaker. He absolutely abuses these in all game modes and is a massive nuisance, though he usually focuses more on kills rather than the game's objective. He uses Opening Gambit to help him rush in and get splats from the get-go. He loves Ninja Squid because it allows him to sneak around and get the drop on people who aren't paying attention to him, it's a pretty good scare tactic. He has the Drop Roller because he's not afraid of being seen whenever he jumps into the fray of battle, he'd rather face the danger head-on and his illegal weapon can help him survive the worst situation. Loves CB because he can wipe out the enemy team with his vicious comp and have enough time to throw as many clams into the basket as possible!

JUSTIN ‒ Jet Squelcher / Run Speed Up / Swim Speed Up / Quick Super Jump Fav Mode: None Why this comp? The Jet Squelcher allows him to fight from a distance, he can't afford to get himself inked up, let alone splatted! He uses the angle shooter to hit enemies from afar and the Ink Vac sucks up any enemy ink that's coming his way. He has Run & Swim Speed Up so he can run away from enemies as fast as possible. Quick Super Jump allows him to jump to the nearest teammate or back to spawn so he can avoid being inked. He's not the best team player since he's constantly focused on himself, though he does try to achieve the game mode's objective.

❥KATIE ‒ Ink Brush Nouveau / Run Speed Up x2 / Swim Speed Up Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? She loves painting the floor with her BFF and running around as fast as possible! The Ink Brush Nouveau allows her to plant Ink Mines to prevent enemies from hurting her or her BFF and the Ultra Stamp is fun to play with! Double the Run Speed Up for extra painting speed and Swim Speed Up for...extra swim speed! Loves Turf War because she can run around with her paintbrush and get absolutely nothing done!

❥SADIE ‒ Ink Brush / Run Speed Up x2 / Swim Speed Up Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? She just HAD to twin with her BFF! She uses the ink brush instead so she can cover any ground her BFF might be unable to! The Splat Bomb can deter enemies and the Killer Wail 5.1 can push her enemies away! Loves Turf War because she can run around with her paintbrush and have fun with her BFF!

❥SIERRA ‒ Aerospray MG / Special Charge Up / Thermal Ink / Special Saver Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? She saw Cody using the Aerospray RG and she wanted to use something similar to what he thought was good but with a twist! She loves tossing Fizzy Bombs to get close to anyone she wants to, same with the Reefslider! She usually wastes her specials and uses them to get closer to Cody. She has Special Charge Up and Special Saver because Cody has them. She additionally has the Haunt ability so she can keep track of anyone that hurts Cody! Loves Turf War because Cody loves it!

❥TYLER ‒ N-ZAP '85 / Comeback / Special Saver / Stealth Jump Fav Mode: Clam Blitz Why this comp? The N-ZAP '85 seems like a very good shooter he can use to impress Lindsay, the Suction Bomb is one of the most powerful bombs in the game and the Tacticooler benefits everyone in the team! Though, e's really bad at playing the game...That's why he has Comeback and Special Saver! They give him slight boosts because he gets splatted so often that they actually work out for him. He has Stealth Jump because he loves thinking that he can jump headfirst into the heat of battle but doesn't want to get instantly splatted (he usually does anyways). Loves CB because it's the closest thing to a real world sport in the game and his Tacticooler is very useful in this mode!

OWEN ‒ Squeezer / Comeback / Intensify Action / Ink Resistance Up Fav Mode: Rainmaker Why this comp? The Squeezer's made from a champagne bottle, he can drink the contents inside! He likes being able to hide behind the Ink Wall (or protecting his teammates with one) and finds it fun trying to use his Trizooka! He has Comeback as insurance for whenever he's splatted, as per Noah's suggestion. Ink Resistance Up was also one of his buddy's suggestions. He uses Intensify Action because he thinks he needs it (spoiler alert: he does NOT need Intensify Action). He's not the best at getting splats but he tries his very best to focus on the objective and win for his team! Loves RM because he thinks its fun to run around with the Rainmaker and it looks so tasty (please don't let him eat the rainmaker)!

❥NOAH ‒ E-Liter 4K / Ink Saver (Main) / Respawn Punisher / Sub Resistance Up Fav Mode: Splat Zones Why this comp? He doesn't need to move from his perch AND he gets to play games with anyone beneath him! He prefers the non-scoped E-Liter 4K because it gives him a wider field of view which prevents him from being surprised by anyone trying to sneak up on him. Besides, his teammates can protect him while he splats the enemy, why should he worry? He plants Ink Mines near himself for further protection in case anyone gets too close and the Wave Breaker helps him keep track of his enemies! He's got all his bases covered. He uses Ink Saver to make sure he has enough ink left for another charge to snipe enemies with. He has Respawn Punisher since he rarely gets splatted and is very good at splatting enemies, therefore he can risk having a slower respawn time if it means making other people get slowed down before he does. He has Sub Resistance Up as well since he knows most people are gonna try reaching him by throwing a variety of bombs, might as well be prepared! He's a scheming sharpshooter and is very good at giving his teammates a plan that'll help them secure a win. Loves SZ because there's only one small area to focus on so he can afford to camp on the highest point of the map and hide behind walls if necessary; also allows him to snipe people more effectively if they stay within the zone!

❥HAROLD ‒ Splatana Stamper / Swim Speed Up / Ninja Squid / Stealth Jump Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? NINJA MODE ACTIVATED! While everyone else did whatever it was they were doing, Harold studied the blade, his beloved Splatana Stamper. He can throw a barrage of Burst Bombs to weaken his enemies. He uses his Zipcaster to truly become a ninja and surprise his enemies by coming close to them. It's a coin toss as to whether or not he actually uses his special effectively and gets anything done with it. He has Swim Speed Up to make up for the slowness that comes with the stealth of Ninja Squid! He also has Stealth Jump to really drive home the ninja thing. He's so stealthy, don't mind the amount of times he's been splatted though! Loves TC because he can hide around the area and try splatting his enemies from the shadows when they're too focused on the Tower.

TRENT ‒ Tri-Stringer / Ink Saver (Main) / Thermal Ink / Object Shredder Fav Mode: Rainmaker Why this comp? He thinks the Tri-Stringer can impress Gwen so he's really into using it. He can help her by using Toxic Mist to slow down the enemies and his Killer Wail 5.1 can distract them! He's a relatively casual player just like Bridgette but he's far more goal-oriented and tries to focus on the objective as much as possible. Ink Saver helps him shoot more and his Thermal Ink can help him track his enemies. He's the only person with Object Shredder since he can destroy the objects from a relatively safe distance. Loves RM because he can take down the enemies from afar, he can slow them down and distract them whenever necessary!

GEOFF ‒ .52 Gal / Comeback / Run Speed Up / Ink Resistance Up Fav Mode: Splat Zones Why this comp? He heard the .52 Gal is pretty good and he himself is pretty good with it too, plus it goes well with his shirt! He loves being able to protect himself with the Ink Wall and throw off the enemy with the Killer Wail 5.1! He tries his best to meaningfully contribute to his team but he's pretty susceptible to getting splatted which is why he runs Comeback to make up for it! He has Run Speed Up which helps him run away from sticky situations and Ink Resistance Up is there for the exact same reason. Loves SZ because he can take the enemy team by surprise and flank them just when they think they've captured the zone!

❥GWEN ‒ Bloblobber / Comeback / Thermal Ink / Ink Recovery Up Fav Mode: Splat Zones Why this comp? The Bloblobber is the perfect weapon to use for someone who doesn't wanna get TOO up close and personal to the enemy! Similar to a backline weapon, she anchors herself on a high place and lobs blobs at everyone below! She can easily hide away from people who try shooting or throwing bombs at her which makes it the perfect weapon for her! She tosses Sprinklers around important areas just to throw the enemy off, or she throws them near spawn so she can passively fill her special tank. The Ink Storm is perfect for punishing enemies and weakening them enough to splat with just a few blobs! She's very focused on the objective and doesn't worry about splats as much. Due to this, she runs Comeback as insurance for whenever she's splatted. Thermal Ink helps her keep track of her enemies and Ink Recovery Up replenishes her ink tank faster so she can lob more blobs. Loves SZ because she can take control of it with her ink storm and constantly barrage the small area with blobs!

EZEKIEL ‒ Tentabrella / Ink Saver (Main) x3 Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? He's very scared of getting splatted so he prefers the biggest shield of the Brella class, the Tentabrella! He's at least smart enough to place Squid Beakons around certain parts of the map for his teammates to super jump to. The Ink Vac helps him protect himself and avoid getting splatted, unless someone's smart enough to splat him from behind before he can fire the bomb. He runs three Ink Saver abilities since the Tentabrella churns through ink and he's paranoid that he'll be unable to protect himself if he loses it too fast. While he's not the best, he still tries to help his team win. Loves TC because it's the best place for him to use his Ink Vac and throw it back into the enemy's face!

❥HEATHER ‒ Dark Tetra Dualies / Last-Ditch Effort / Ninja Squid / Ink Resistance Up Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? Back to dualies! Heather loves them because she gets to do four dodge rolls as opposed to the usual 2! The Autobomb helps her find enemies or take them by surprise if they aren't paying attention to their surroundings. The Reefslider is an avenue for her to get close to the enemy very quickly and possibly splat them when the Reefslider explodes. Unlike those with Opening Gambit, she understands that the last minute of the battle is the most important one which is why she has Last-Ditch Effort to help boost her abilities where it counts. Ninja Squid allows her to slip past her opponents and sneak up on them and she can dodge-roll if she puts herself in a vulnerable position. Ink Resistance Up helps her move through enemy territory effectively, making her an unstoppable force. She's inclined to focus on the objective, though she favors getting splats just a little bit more. Anything to sabotage the enemy team and prevent them from completing the objective. Loves TC because she can ride the tower and take control of it while her teammates do the rest of the hard work (i.e. preventing the enemies from accessing the tower)!

❥CODY ‒ Aerospray RG / Quick Respawn / Special Charge Up / Special Saver Fav Mode: Turf War Why this comp? What better way is there to impress a lady than to show her that you're nothing more than a special farming Booyeah Bomb spammer? There is none! That's why Cody loves his Aerospray RG! His Sprinkler contributes to passively filling his special gauge and the Booyeah Bomb is the star of the show! He has absolutely zero faith in his own ability to survive so he runs Quick Respawn to make up for it. Special Charge Up and Special saver heavily contribute to his ability to spam Booyeah Bombs as efficiently as possible. He sucks at getting splats and rarely contributes to the objective because he's way too busy trying to spam bombs. Loves Turf War because it gives him the biggest excuse to paint turf and fill up his special gauge!

BETH ‒ Splat Roller / Ink Recovery Up / Ink Saver (Main) / Run Speed Up Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? Beth would love the ability to roll and possibly crush her enemies whenever she does it! She remembers to flick her roller horizontally and vertically but probably not as much as she should. She uses Curling Bombs to throw off her enemies or use it to get even closer to them! When she's in danger she uses her Big Bubbler and tries getting back at them from the inside! She uses Ink Recovery Up to ensure that she can recharge her ink faster and uses Ink Saver to prevent herself from having to recharge the ink as often. Run Speed Up helps her roll around even faster! It goes without saying that she's very dedicated to helping her team win the game! Loves TC because her Big Bubbler is most useful when used on the tower!

❥ALEJANDRO ‒ Tentatek Splattershot / Last-Ditch Effort / Haunt / Ink Recovery Up Fav Mode: Tower Control Why this comp? As a sly and calculating player, Alejandro uses the Tentatek Splattershot to combat the strongest special in the game: The Crab Tank. His loadout is the answer to the meta and he's the only person that has the Triple Inkstrike special. He's a very accurate shooter and surprises his enemies with his Splat Bombs whenever they're hiding behind walls or are about to jump onto the map. He also has amazing accuracy when he gets to use his Triple Inkstrike, carefully aiming them and changing the game each time. Outwardly he's very focused on achieving the objective and winning the game, though his true love lies in splatting his enemies and getting the highest splat count of the game. He's very good at deceiving others and making them question his next move. Loves Tower Control because he can completely dominate the tower and keep people away from it!

Floss (asked the discord for a dance name and this was the first one), a member of Team Cracken (pirate team with dance names and marine motif) with nautilus fossils as the main motif on his diving gear. He likes to hunt fish. With a gun. Don't worry about it.

Rustbucket, a robot on Team Calibur (a team all about stylin' on their opponents) who was discarded by Dr. Order, leading them to accumulate so so much rust. They've finally made their way to CPU Kerfuffle for revenge, but uhh… who's gonna tell 'em?

HII !!! thank you so much !! and thank you for being interested in my headworld !! i'll put this under a readmore because this post Will be long i will ramble

im basically in a constant state of changing my mind about how the lore of my main headworld works ,without ever really writing i down in a concrete way (💔), but the gist of it is that it came to be when the goddess Ethel turned herself into a planet so that she could witness life in the universe besides just herself. she first created her son, Fenrihar, who could create life from the ground and watch over it for all of eternity. he is officially known as the father of dragons, ut his very existence and his actions are basically the first domino that would lead to the existence to almost all of the other gods and life forms

the main sapient species/sophonts in ethel are humans, sphinxes, mages (they're just anthro animals with cultures primarily geared towards mastery of magic use), dragons, miscellaneous spirits that can't really be considered on the same level as gods, and the gods themselves. i need to get to developing what the actual critters and plants on ethel are like though, but for now just assume there are a lot of earth animals and miscellaneous fantasy animals like sea serpents and the like.

the "main patheon" of deities in ethel is also something that is still unfortunately a work in progress after so much time because i am. bad at making new gods and just like to rotate the same few in my head (this is the curse of my headworld, i just think about the same few things ,when i really want to flesh out other things)

but to summarize, what ive got at the moment:

ethel: the planet herself! though when she appears in dreams and visions, she takes many forms, resulting in varied depictions of her. being in planet form is actually very painful for her - her tears led to the formation of the sea and the sea god nautilus.

at her core is a very high concentration of pure magic, and it radiates out up to the surface of the world- pure magic itself is incredibly dangerous to mortals and warps the world around it in strange ways, but in the usual process, by the time it gets to the surface it's in a safer and less concentrated form and helps uphold the structure of the physical realm (there are other realms and types of magic. for the most part they do not affect the physical realm, but they are intricately connected in imperceptible ways.) safer magic can be channeled and manipulated by those with a high "magic affinity" either through tools or directly through the user. its reality warping nature means it has a lot of potential in skilled hands

fenrihar: the first god besides ethel! he was created to jumpstart life on the surface and make sure it doesn't go extinct. he's responsible for a lot of important features of ethel due to his efforts to keep everyone from Just Dying. such as floating islands, a large river in the middle of the largest continent, and a collosal white tree reaching deep into the planet and far into the sky, created to contain an ancient force of destruction.

ilandel and llewenthe: the twin deities of the sun and moon, their work is of course very important to the wellbeing of ethel's denizens. ilandel created the sphinxes, while llewenthe created the mages. while on good terms with one another, they seem to have opposing philosophies- ilandel values the pursuit and sharing of as much knowledge as possible, while llewenthe is a more secretive sort, dispersing the secrets of the world only to her most loyal and trusted of disciples.

in the earlier eras of the world, ilandel was much more jovial and sociable and would often visit his children in their burgeoning city kingdom. the early sphinxes, just like ilandel, sought to discover and record as much knowledge as possible, and their civilization was renowned for vast libraries. there was an insatiable desire within the collective conscious of the sphinxes to find the "ultimate truth of the universe" as they called it. until in one day, the entire civilization burned itself down, leaving not a trace of their records. the only survivors were groups of sphinxes that had left the main city kingdom months or years prior. it's a bit too long to get into on this already long post, but a certain royal scientist named minerva was the main catalyst for these events

after the fall of the early sphinxes, ilandel fell into a deep grief and now hides himself away from the world except for when he carries the sun. so he doesn't uphold his philosophy very strongly in the present day, and he seems reluctant to contact his still surviving sphinxes, leading to many groups choosing other gods as patrons under the belief that their father has abandoned them :(

nautilus: a massive serpent and the sea god! he was the next god to form after fenrihar, created from ethel's tears. immediately after her formation she began to splash around in the water, creating large waves that started to drown the world. fenrihar was very much not happy about this, but nautilus was so much larger than him, so he couldn't stop his rampage with brute strength.

so instead he challenged him to a race, and nautilus being very cocky and brash and five minutes old, accepted the challenge. at first nautilus relied on the waves to give her speed, but this proved difficult once she got to parts of the land he hadn't drowned yet. after just a few laps nautilus was exhausted from dragging himself through the ground each time, and yielded, agreeing to stop flooding the world for fun and instead preside over the new ocean that had formed around the continent. nautilus's repeated laps had worn down the ground as well, leading to the massive river that splits the continent

viridian (name pending?): the deity of the wilds and humans. she's responsible for a lot of plants and animals and smaller deities, and humans! she loves hanging out with her kids, she will attend any festival in her honor and drink all of the alcohol (so usually a lot of alcohol is prepared when a festival is about her). she's generally benevolent at these parties, but she can be unforgiving when someone incites her wrath. she loves tricks and games and adventures though, she'll disguise herself as all sorts of things just to mess with mortals. she says she's just testing them, but it's clear sometimes that she's just bored and wants something exciting to do.

in the earlier eras of the world, viridian and fenrihar worked together closely, though a rift has grown between them ever since a massive conflict between dragon clans and a human kingdom lead to the near extinction of dragons, and the lifting of many landmasses in the sky for them to migrate to as a safe haven.

as of yet unnamed sleep deity: the god of the realm of sleep, as well as the realm itself. it's a manifestation of the dreaming minds of those asleep, and is the realm in closest "proximity" to the physical realm. the exact nature of its existence is a mystery even to the other gods, but it's considered llewenthe's child since it actually talks to her, and delivers messages for her to mortals through dreams. the other gods are uncomfortable with being in the sleep realm but sometimes need its help delivering messages as well.

i should probably stop here.. i want to get around to sharing a lot of the stuff in my mind about ethel eventually, like the magic system and certain moments of its history, certain characters, etc. it's a huge struggle to get that stuff out of my head and into words/images but, essentially: AAAGH!

it's also a bit of a struggle to generate new ideas and lore to make the world feel more.. concrete? because it seems that im particularly latched on to a few concepts that my brain likes. but i'll figure it out eventually lol, hopefully without having to uproot what ive already got since ive done that quite a few times already.

anyway !! thank you so much for your curiosity!! i did ramble a bit. and sorry if there are any typos or weird formatting or if the way i structure sentences might be odd, im on my phone which can be difficult to type with sometimes. im hoping i can write down and share more about ethel some time and in a more presentable format . my poor poor world in my brain that i need to explore more ...
