Hello and welcome to the world of the RWBY Necromancer AU!
My name is Morgan/Bowl, you’re lovely writer and blog owner. I’m the sole owner of this blog so if you have any questions about the AU, feel free to ask me directly! :]
Now, with that out of the way, here’s some things you need to know,
Salem’s whole thing happened a WHILE ago, so she is a thing of the past. There will be mentions of her and leftovers from the war against her, however she does not ever fight the main characters
Ozpin is functionally immortal, due to Ozma originally figuring out how to revive himself before death, there began a duplication loop of his magic. He gained his revived magic, but his original living magic needed somewhere to go, so it attached itself to the next host. Ever since then, each of the heirs to the magic are immediately revived after death without any control over it, thus continuing the cycle.
Oscar is autistic in this au, he is 10 physically, but mentally he is more akin to a 5 year old.
Speaking of mental ages, revived people will take the appearance of whatever their mental age is, not the age they died at. So for instance, Oscar died when he was 7 but because of his mental age being 5, he looks like your typical 5 year-old
Ozpin, Oscar, Qrow, and Glynda are the main characters in this au, RWBY and Co play supporting roles
Ironwood, and by extension, Atlas & Mantle, are the main antagonists of the story. Mistral also serves as an antagonist but more so as a support for Atlas & Mantle
Pursuers are soldiers of Atlas who are assigned to hunt down and kill necromancers or capture them to put into a necromancer prison. No exceptions. Even children.
Songbirds are random people who decided to give up their names, identities, and lives for the cause of saving these necromancers from the prisons and from Atlas. They are known for singing coded songs that tell different meanings.
Ozpin, Qrow, and Glynda all met in Atlas when they were 12, two years later they were captured and put into a Necromancer prison. Three years after that is when they escaped via the songbirds and made their way to Vale
Vale and Vacuo are safe havens for magic users and especially necromancers
Healers are forced to work for the Atlesian government because of their healing magic
Shapeshifters are rare and most people in Atlas think they don’t even exist. They also have the capacity to change their general appearance so long as it still looks like them (I.e, changing hair length, sex, or body height), this is the only other form they have besides their animal form.
Shapeshifters are also capable of having animal features, however many have evolved to lack these features as a result of Atlas attempting to breed Shapeshifting out of people. Qrow for example, does not have feathers, while Blake, has cat ears and a tail.
This story is dark so be forewarned.
There is a separate timeline occurring on this blog called the Young Necromancer AU timeline. Which is how the story of what happened in the main characters’ teenage hoods is told.
Anonymous is on at all times unless I begin to get concerning or otherwise rude asks in an unreasonable amount
Cloqwork (Ozpin x Qrow) is in fact a thing here, it’s my favorite ship, sue me.
If you’re not sure what to ask, feel free to ask me what I’m in the mood for and I’ll give you some options :)
I go by they/them and necro/necrom pronouns!
Here’s how to use those:

Here is some other info you may want to know!

wizard jaune au) jaune's not exactly an expert in necromancy, as close as shamanism is to it as a practice they're noticeably different. but he's pretty sure dead corpses aren't supposed to be forced to plow fields.
apparently, the witch salem has a new apprentice named cinder and ozpin needs jaune to go tell her to reign in her student. jaune: why don't you do it?" ozma: "I dare not approach her" jaune: "because her powers put her outside of time and she's too powerful?" ozma: "no because we were on again off again and then got married and after our daughters moved out to go to magical girl collage we got a divorce and the entire situation was FUCKED!"
jaune: "well that sounds like a proble-" ozma: "SHE TOOK MY FAVORITE FUCKING MUG! SHE DRINKS HER DISGUSTING TEA OUT OF IT JUST TO FUCKING MOCK ME SHE KNOWS THAT THE TASTE BUILDS UP, OH SHE SAYS IT'S ALL IN MY HEAD BUT I KNOW THE FUCKING TRUTH!"
so now neo ruby and jaune venture out of the forest to handle the situation (and give ozma some time to cool off)
Ozpin was a man of many secrets. When asked his favorite color, he would tell you deep cave blue, which Jaune couldn't even begin to imagine what that looked like. This made it all the more surprising to learn Ozpin had an ex. An ex who can also perform magic.
Jaune wasn't an expert on magic, but even he knew of the Black Queen, Salem. The most powerful necromancer in all the kingdoms, rumored to be seeking a way to slip this mortal coil and become undead. With necromancy, she was on the right path.
Necromancy is an interesting case, as it falls under what is known as "gray magic". Gray magic is any magical practice that is used with malicious intent more than half of the time. Other magics were also considered gray, mostly offensive magic, like pyromancy and other elemental magic.
However, what separates necromancy from the rest was the inversion of it's malice. Where cryomancy destroys a building by freezing it until it shatters, necromancy creates life by bringing the dead to the mortal realm by imparting a piece of the user's magical reserve to reawaken the corpse.
Which brings Jaune here, to the edge of the Black Wood Forest, named for it's sturdy tarwood trees. He and Ruby were sent by Ozpin on a quest to retrieve his chalice of love. Or as Ruby put it, his coffee mug. Jaune drew his hand across the black bark of the tarwood, admiring the black sheen it had.
Tarwood was sturdy and made for the hardest woodwork, if you can get enough to craft anything. Thick and black to it's core, tarwood was strong enough to deflect common steel, withstand most elemental attacks, and when used for firewood, gives off a heat ten times that of pinewood.
Which made the claw marks he felt all the more intimidating. Sturdy tree made for a sturdy environment, and if you're strong enough to cut into the tarwood of the Black Wood Forest, you're strong enough to live in Black Wood Forest.
The claw marks dragged across the tree repeatedly, signaling this was the territory of the large creature who made it. It was hard to tell for Jaune, because there was so many, until Ruby pointed out to him it was two claw marks with each scratch.
They needed to be alert, if whatever made this mark was out there, patrolling it's territory. Jaune would rather stay as far awayas possible, but they needed to cut through, if they wanted to reach the heart of the forest, where Salem lived.
Jaune had heard many stories about the Hag of Black Wood. They said she was ancient, as old as the forest itself. And powerful; the most powerful witch in all of Remnant. The most terrifying story he heard, the one his sister told to scare him on Hollow's Eve, was how Salem would send a dark minion to snatch people so she could do awful, terrible things to make them scream. And they are never heard from again.
He gulped. "Uh, d-do we have to?"
"Not really." Ruby shrugged. "We could always tell Ozpin to get his mug himself."
Jaune sighed. "So we have to." He trudged forward, through the dead leaves covering the damp undergrowth and mud beneath. He glanced around as Ruby hovered over his shoulder. "Have you ever been here?"
"No." Ruby answered. "My sister told me to stay away from this place if I can. Something about monsters touching me."
"Yeah, I can imagine a single swipe from whatever lives here would be enough to... Uh..."
"Kill me?"
"Y-Yeah."
Ruby shrugged. "If I die, I die. If I'm going to die, I at least want to die a cool way."
"Like what?"
"Like..." Ruby put a finger to her chin in thought. "Like making a last stand against an evil army, or saving someone from a vicious monster!"
"A hero's death, huh?" Jaune chuckled. "I like that." He sighed contently.
"What about you?" Ruby moved to in front of his face, blocking his view. "How would you want to die?"
"Me?" Jaune looked past her and moved forward, trying not to be blinded. "Well, it's kind of lame."
"What is it?" Ruby asked, flying around his head. "What is it? What is it?"
"Well..." Jaune mulled the idea in his head, then gave a soft smile. "In bed."
Ruby stopped. "...Wow, that is lame."
"See?" Jaune continued smiling. "Maybe that's how a warrior should die. Comfortable in his own bed."
"So, when you say in bed, do you mean stabbed or poisoned?"
"Sleeping." Jaune replied. "I don't want to feel any of it when I die."
"Ugh! So boring!" Ruby groaned. "Why not die a heroic death, fighting a monster or an evil king, or something?"
"Well, if I died like that, I wouldn't see how my story ended." Jaune walked aimlessly as his eyes casted skyward, through the empty branches. "I'd rather die in a comfy bed, surrounded by the people I love, knowing that I've left this world in safe hands."
"Wow," Ruby sniffed, "that was really sweet."
"And foolish." The two turned to see a black figure with a pale face approach from the trees, towering over the two. Red irises sat in black pools of cold emotion. Her hair was tied back in outward rolls. "As you will both die here, in agony."

I remember on my first readthrough, I was confused about the time travel reveal page.
On my second readthrough, when we hit the Ozma flashforward and the "Emma in the beacon forest" page in particular (and by extension "Who sent me? I'm afraid you did, Miss Ozma.") my first thought was "Wait, do we know that's the future, or is this one of the previous Emmas given they've tried to pass their knowledge onto the next Emma?"
The first Emma in the beacon forest was wearing the purple dress (which, among other things, is one we know is (also?) worn by Emma 2, the star-stealer queen necromancer one who "got" what Emma Ramos was going for and set up the paths with Em.) So it may or may not be our Emma's future, because it may well be a past Emma.
The Emma we see in the post-time-travel-reveal final Story So Far Page? That one is dressed identically to Emma 6 (with Inkbell) as she appears in the intermission. Her face looks like it might be starting to take damage. I'm pretty sure it's right before she beacons to Alice Liddell and dies.
I'm still kind of confused about the time travel but that's mainly because we appear to have both "moving along the timeline" vorpalsmith time travel for individual Emmas and the six reboots and it is therefore (probably deliberately) ambiguous whether any given future!Emma is our Future Emma or a past Emma, further in their personal timeline before they rebooted it.

Finally finished ...
Tumblr media
Whew, what a ride :D (Spoilers ahead!)
I started in early December but managed to finish just now, after dropping and picking the game a couple of times.
Apparently I was on Chaos route the whole time and got the Princess ending! I played mostly blind except for recruiting Catiua cause for the life of me, I couldn't tell which option would make her happy and I was way too tired to redo the battle if I chose wrong.
Not gonna lie, Catiua's sudden attitude change felt so out of the blue in my route cause Denam literally saved her just a fight ago and next she was like "He will leave me!!" :/ girl, pls... I'm trying here with everyone and their dog after my arse for things I didn't do!!
The level cap was absolutely annoying at first and the reason I put the game down several times. I understand why it was placed but there were points in the story where it feels like fight after fight you get zero rewards and no upgrades. I need the rewards, dang it XD
I had a lot more fun in chapter 4 when I started doing side content and lurk into Palace of the Dead. I loved dipping my toes in and looking for treasures. I didn't go far though but I did leave it with like 6 undead dragons, about 5 undead humans and 2 necromancers :D Which reminds me, I kept recruiting people from the story fights whenever I could, lol maybe that's why I took so long :D;;
I see how this game inspired FFT and I can see so many story points that were taken and amplified a lot in FFT. I don't want to compare the two games - they may be similar but they do have very different tone to me.
I really enjoyed the characters, everyone just felt so ...human? But also that made fighting everyone a whole more difficult. Canopus definitely gets my fave character badge. Such a fun fella and he joins so early. He never left my party :D Our momma hen! With how Hamilton ended it really makes me want to push to finish CODA and get him... but that means clearing PotD twice? Argh xD I do enjoy PotD, I enjoy getting goodies and I don't mind the fights but I'm a bit tired and hunger for a different game.
Lastly, I saw a reviewer who played TO for a first time complain the final dungeon was too hard (?) ... did we play the same game :D;; Or was I over prepared cause I poked side content and felt relatively geared? Dragons and Gryphons? You can petrify them, you can charm them! You can fall? That's the enemy's problem cause I am exploiting this in every corner. >u>;; The final boss was spooky but not too hard, I felt like the battle vs Oz and Ozma was way, way harder and I barely made it ;;;;
Speaking of... What's with people opening locked doors to the abyss to get power? Sir... it was locked for a reason. What do you expect to get from there? A pat on the back from El Diablo released from it's infernal prison and a cool toy to rule the world? You, my good sir, are getting one shot by the thing locked there and it'll go destroy the world making it our problem now... 😩
And lastly ... time travel is canon? As in it get acknowledged in the records and mentioned and I'm just imagining Denam picks the world card at the end and think "Had I taken another choice... another path then Vyce..." I still want to punch him but I've seen The Butterfly Effect enough times to know anyone can change with different circumstances >u>;
WELL that's gonna be it~ Glad I played and finished this classic :D Next on my list is "Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song remaster" and I expect it to take another 6+ months from my time to complete lol;;;

Necromancer AU Oscar headcanons!
- He, as previously mentioned, has severe amnesia from being revived.
- He deals with a lot of personal anger towards himself when Oz becomes depressed because he so desperately wants to remember.
- He’s still as friendly as he was though.
- he absolutely DOES NOT care for Qrow and Glynda
- 1. He sees Glynda as a tall scary lady and 2. He sees Qrow as lazy and rude.
- He does everything in his power to scare the fuck out of Qrow
- tbh Ghost! Oscar only does this because he’s scared and confused and doesn’t want Oz to abandon him for other people.
- Oz of course immediately reassures him
- still don’t care for Qrow though
- Qrow one day, brings Ruby over to introduce her to Oz (because of her affiliation with Summer)
- Oscar immediately gets excited and curious about the crimsonette.
- He sneaks around her a little bit before he appears in front of her to say hello. Ruby finds him nice to be around.
- They talk for a little bit, Ruby finding out about how Oscar died and Oscar finding out that she can do the same thing as his dad. They very quickly bond and become friends, although Ruby isn’t entirely aware that Oscar sees her as a friend.
- Until Oz and Qrow walk into the living room to find Oscar and Ruby talking.
Oz: “What’re you two doing there?”
Oscar: [looks at Oz and points at Ruby] “Friend!”
- Oz just about dies right there because that’s adorable omg.
- Ruby is very confused about the situation
Oscar: [looks back at Ruby] “Friend?” :)
Ruby: [slightly stunned] “uh. Sure! Friend!” :D
- she is perfectly ok with being this ghost kids friend.
- Glynda is slightly upset with the fact that Oscar avoids her, because she does truly want to get to know him (he saw her yell at Qrow and promptly said “aaaa scary”.)
- he does eventually also warm up to her, but it takes a little bit.
- the other reincarnations pop in and out of Oz and Oscars house. Sort of how relatives do.
- they are all one big ghost family.
- Oscar particularly likes KOV and Ozma
- all of the reincarnations did their best to comfort Oz when He first found out about Oscar’s amnesia.
- Oscar loves anything soft. Like, anything soft. Even Oz’s hair 😂
- He likes to make pillow forts and read books in them, if you’re lucky he’ll let you join him.
- he doesn’t like loud people. He just in general is very jumpy about loud noises.
- definitely a hugger, ghost boi likes to give people hugs, but sometimes struggles to understand that not everyone enjoys hugs.

Illthdar Locations: Isle of Illthdar
Tumblr media
Map made by @guardians-of-las-vyxen
The City of Las - Located on the crest of a hill near the coast, it was built as a gift to the White Prince, Las. The interior walls once contained small farm holdings and crops for servants to tend and supply the palace with food.
Greenwood Forest - A large forest that has encroached on much of the landscape and needs cutting back so farmland moved outside of the overcrowded city doesn’t become overgrown.
Birch Grove - An area within Greenwood forest that has a ring of birch trees surrounding a Hamadryad Oak: a type of Venin tree that has lost its faerie counterpart and longs to leave the roots of its tree. A dangerous creature, its illusion abilities are kept contained by the dispelling power of the goldbirch surrounding it, though this doesn’t prevent unwary travellers from slipping between the sentries and winding up in the Hama’s clutches.
Sleepy Forest -  A sentient forest whose boundaries move, confusing anyone who wanders in unprepared. The largest living populations of sentient trees are found in the Sleepy Forest of Illthdar, Moving Forest of Midraert and Talking Forest of Ozma.
The Black Forest - Home to all manner of thimble faeries, including tooth faeries. On the far side the towers of the Necromancers are located: one of the six branches of Warlocks.
The Tengu Mountains - Stretching from the north-west to the far north, where they join with the Northern mountain range, the Tengu mountains are home to seventeen Tengu clans, of which Takayama Naigubu is the head.
The Fissure - A rent in the landscape in which demons are unwillingly drawn to and sucked in, disappearing to some unknown location. It pulses with a sickly light, absorbing all the mana from the local area and accelerating mana waste.

I see, would what you did for Ozpin to stabilize his magic also be done for Qorbyn? Could someone help stabilize her magic with a piece of their own? -🐈‍⬛
Ozma: hm… unfortunately that sort of thing is not easy. It’s very hard to do something like that, between the amount of energy it takes and the time it would take to do so, it would have to be gradual or else it could kill her. Not to mention the repercussions the provider could face if they were to give up a section of their magic.
I would not recommend such extreme measures until we know for certain this isn’t a problem that can be fixed with emotional intervention, such as therapy.
Ozpin’s secondary instability was fixed through him being able to heal from what happened, even if not completely. He just needed to be in a better environment than he had been in previously.

Say Oz… I just noticed this but, why are your eyes green?
Ozpin: I am capable of changing my eye color depending on my emotions.
I can manually do it, but it’ll also automatically do it if my emotions are strong enough.
It’s typical in many powerful necromancers, although it’s not a requirement. For example, Qrow and Glynda are also very powerful necromancers, but they don’t have the same ability.
I’ve managed my emotions well enough to where very rarely will they change on their own, but sometimes I can’t help it.
I technically have three eye colors:
Gold: strong level positive emotions
Brown: regular level or neutral emotions
Green: strong level negative emotions
The other Oz’s, including Ozymandias, also had this trait, so I always figured it had something to do with Ozma’s magic, although that’s purely a theory.
Qrow actually has his own variant of this, but instead of the color changing, his eyes tend to glow (more so when he’s angry, he too, has learned to be careful about that however.)
I think the only other people I met with this ability were Summer and Chartreuse.
Also possibly the songbird that saved us when we were younger, the one I talked to the most. Although I’m not entirely sure because I only got a glance for a split second before his eyes returned to normal…

Ozma! Are you alright? Ozpin is alright, we're working things out. Also I have a question -- when you can tell that an ozcarnation is upset or something, and another one gets worried,is it like a feedback loop?
🌸
Ozma: sort of, it’s more like….extended empathy, if you could actually feel what the other person is feeling. Everyone’s feelings feel different somehow so that’s how we know.
I just hope the young lad is okay….

Ozma! How's that friend of yours? I made some chocolate chip cookies! :) Maybe you can give some to your buddy? (I'm gonna be honest I forgot his name)
🌸
(His name is Mauve :D)
Ozma: he’s alright. I wouldn’t necessarily call him a friend, but I will give some of these to him.

I’m afraid so Ozma. It’s Ozpin’s daughter, Qorbyn. Her necro magic has been literally every type there is, and it keeps shifting. -🐈‍⬛
Ozma: I do recall Ozpin saying that he was having difficulties teaching her how to use her necromancy.
I did not realize the extent of it.
Perhaps it is a defect of sorts, her magic may have not developed correctly, for one reason or another. I do recall her early childhood being rather… traumatic.
Trauma in the early stages of life can most definitely effect the way a child’s necromancy develops.
If memory serves me, Ozpin’s necromancy had been the same way before he had inherited my magic due to his own trauma, my magic seemed to have stabilized his own. However after he was in the prison, he was unable to use his necromancy until his final year at Beacon without it hurting him in some way. He gained my magic when he was maybe 12.
I know Qrow’s magic also materialized in an aggressive way not just because of his lineage but possibly because of his upbringing, magic is connected to feeling after all. If he felt as if he needed to protect himself then it makes since that it would be aggressive type.
So it’s entirely possibly that it could be three things, a genetic defect, trauma in her early life, or simply her family lineage with necromancy.
I feel awful for the poor girl.

Have you ever met a necromancer whose magic was wild and unpredictable? In the sense that every day it changes to something else: healing to aggressive, helpful to user then harmful to the user, or controllable to uncontrollable? -🐈‍⬛
Ozma: hmm… I can’t say that I have unfortunately. I’ve met people with unpredictable necromancy but not to the degree you’re speaking of. This degree is… something else. Something I’m not familiar with.
What you’re essentially saying is that every aspect of this person’s necromancy is a game of chance?

Ozma, i hope I’m not bothering you? But I’m in need of your help. -🐈‍⬛
Ozma: no, you are not. What did you need?
