Carnival Row (Series 2/finale)
[3 stars]
I definitely enjoyed this final season of Carnival Row more than I did the first, even thought it remains about as subtle as a sledge hammer. Faint praise given my previous reactions and, honestly, it isn’t a show I loved, even with all the effort to production values. It remains clunkily written at best, even with its many (often obvious) layers in plotting.
What it did do better was to refocus its story away from the vapid and forced love interest between Cara Delevingne (Only Murders in the Building) and Orlando Bloom (Needle in a Timestack) and onto the political aspects that were mostly ignored last season. Both characters grew for that choice. Substituting for that storyline, in primary, is the travails of David Gyasi (Man in an Orange Shirt) and Tamzin Merchant. And the season did manage to build on the stories of Ariyon Bakare (Life), Karla Crome (Misfits), and Simon McBurney (Wolfwalkers).
This final season covers a lot of ground in a fairly short season. I imagine it would have worked better as a book than it did on screen. It isn’t unwatchable, but it is too often teeth-gnashingly without imagination. If you were at all invested in the first series, this will provide some satisfaction, but I can’t say it is something I’d put high on anyone’s list.

hi! this is very out of the blue but I was wondering what is your favorite book genre and can you recommend 5 of your fav books/series from that genre? I’m in a bit of a reading slump and I think it’s cause I keep reading the same fantasy and non-fiction shit (but if you like fantasy the most then I’d still like to hear your favs lol)
i am twisting my answer a bit here to my favorite books of the year first because i've been struggling with a reading slump as well, and these very much saved me!
pachinko by min jin lee is the best historical fiction i've read... ever? and every aspect of it was great, but it is obviously a heavy read. incredibly worth it though.
a brief history of time by stephen hawking is always a classic (if you want a non-fiction), but i found that when we cease to understand the world by benjamin labatut is great to recommend to people who aren't as into physics because it is pretty fictionalized and brings up many philosophical questions with it. so if you're into that i would absolutely recommend it, once again deals with war a lot so not a fun read in the typical sense, but a good one!
needle in a timestack by robert silverberg is a great set of sci-fi short stories. so that's a quick easy read. i'd recommend piranesi by susanna clarke in that same vein (quick and easy read, not a sci-fi). house of leaves is convoluted but like. really fun to read. so that too.
i am very much an epic fantasy fan and i think that those series are bad for reading slumps most of the time because they're big commitments and also not finished half of the time so you don't get the satisfaction of actually finding out the whole story. which is why i opened this up with other books but if you do want to go for a fantasy the best ones i can think of for a reading slump would be either
the green bone saga by fonda lee - it's a trilogy and a pretty quick read at that and the middle book isn't a drag which is pretty rare.
mistborn but only because the first book functions as a stand alone, the rest isn't as fast-paced
other than that my fantasy favorites would include the poppy war, stormlight, kingkiller etc. the usual and basic choices.

Watch "Needle in a Timestack Trailer #1 (2021) | Movieclips Trailers" on YouTube
I feel like this will be one of those films that is very convoluted in a way that is automatically considered genius but may end up not making much sense. But if nothing else, these are going to be some incredible performances and a very interesting plot.
