Fitzier western/priest AU...

James feeling out of place and like he doesnt belong, so he turns towards the church hoping to find a place for himself. Becoming a priest means people will turn to him for advice and reassurance, he'll be able to tell stories and bring comfort to people, he'll have the attention as he'll feel good about himself, he'll get to wear beautiful garments and he'll be part of a community. Add religious guilt and feeling fraudulent to the mix. He'll have everything but still be lonely, because its not real, its a performance and God sees

He probably became main priest of the church because the former one died/retired and Franklin/Barrrow helped him get the position

and (cowboy) Francis, who tags along with the Franklins and Sophia for a sunday service and sees right through him. Franklin introducing them after or at a community gathering. For some reason Francis is intrigued, wants to see how far/how deep the acting of James goes. confessional booth scene

Fitzier pirate AU where James is part of Franklin's crew (Erebus pirates if we're feeling silly) and Francis' crew (dont have to say the name, do I...) sinks them in battle...

They already knew each other from battles before, maybe Francis was in Franklins crew before James' time, word getting around etc. Erebus/Terror rivalry archenemies whatevs..

Anyways when Erebus sinks, James survives, gets fished out by Terror and stays on their ship ("I can throw you back in the water if you'd prefer that?" and the rest is history)

Erebus used to be a very structured crew, like they were playing at being officials/navy, but Terror's very pirate-y and free. So on Terror James can become himself/herself and Francis realizes Jame isn't as stuck up as he thought. And scene

Hmmm... post-canon AU... Francis and James falling in love after the carnivale and during the walk but never saying it out loud, instead fantasizing about their life back in Britain (as friends, as far as the other knows) – retiring, perhaps sharing rooms, leaving the pain behind. It's like an agreement that they'll stay together after, grow from what they experienced.

But then they actually get rescued and of course, it's all so much when they're back. Court, press, crew members writing their memoirs. Blanky retires, but Francis stays for a while, in order to be kept in the loop about the crew members and their wellbeings. Fitzjames stays as well, saying he just has to get everything in order first, dealing with Lady Jane etc.

But soon Francis realizes that James isn't gonna retire. He's falling back into old habits, his old role, the attention he gets from the newspapers and people getting to him. Slowly he's becoming the old James Fitzjames, the Character agan. And they both know it, and it hurts, but James can't stop. He feels Francis distancing himself, but he can't reach out. He knows he's a disappointment, but he can't change it.

They grow back into their old dynamic and Francis finally chooses to retire anyway, tired of waiting and getting disappointed. He moves away, perhaps a different area or a different city. Maybe he'll leave Britain. Leave his hopes for a life with James behind.

But as soon as he's gone, James realizes what he lost. Even in their uncomfortableness, the fact that Francis was just *there* was enough for him to keep going, it didn't matter if Francis loved or loathed him, he knew he could return to him if it got too much. But now Francis is gone and he's completely alone. And all the mistakes he made, all the memories from the arctic, all the masks he put on again, come falling back down on him. Realizing he can't be this persona again if it means he'll lose the only one who's ever seen him and the only one he ever wanted to be seen by.

So he leaves, retires, and goes looking for Francis, more determined than ever, and they'll find each other again. And this time it'll be what they fantasized about, and more.

Please tell us about your au ideas

I have posted some, ill add the tag i used down there ↓ and i also don't care if anyone wants to use them or parts of it... im like a charity stand, just take what you might need. I got some Western AU ideas that i cant share though cause my mind tells me I have to write it (< cant write).

Me and the oomfs also been saying that Fitzier has like, peak Screwball Romcom and generally 40s-60s movie vibes so that's another thing. Bringing Up Baby, for example. Rear Window, definitely.

And my personal favorite that was also a Exchange prompt of mine: Trucker AU. Either both as truckers (intercom convos, gas station hookups, 80s highway-horror vibes) or only trucker Francis and James as a hitchhiker or owner/customer at a motel/gas station.

Mafia Fitzier AU... thinking...

Con-artist James looking for good targets in a casino and accidentally tries to scam a mafia group that includes Francis. He gets through with it at first, but Francis knew he was scamming them from the beginning, but waiting for a good moment to uncover him and wipe that stupid grin off his face.

James tries to scramble but they get & bring him to The Boss™ (Sir John)... but John's like "he managed to trick them all except you (Francis, his 2nd)? We gotta keep him!"

So James is like... yeah I can make money like this... I'm smarter than all of them, their boss chose me, I'm so cool... if it wasn't for that damn old man... I'm gonna get him, too...
