I Just Want To Talk To Them - Garrick Tavis x Reader
Prompt - “Who did this to you? I just want to talk to them” @fw-gt A/N: This is for the Garrick girls who love the cocky flirty side of him. Enjoy. Masterlist
Tumblr media
I winced as the healer prodded around my now very broken nose. Cleaning up what she could of the blood that had run down my face. Which was a lot. The mender had fixed most of the damage, but had to use their abilities on other cadets. Meaning I still had some bruising and tenderness where I had taken the full force of an elbow to the face during a challenge.
It had been a stupid mistake. One I knew Garrick and Xaden would lecture me about later. I had dropped my guard and my opponent had seen it. I had lost the challenge because of it. My first one this year. Wrecking my streak of going undefeated for two years. So close to a perfect three year streak. Luckily neither had been at challenges to see what had happened. But there was no way I could hide what had happened. One cause my nose had been broken and couldn’t be fully healed. Two it would be the talk of the quadrant.
“Use this a few times a day, should clear up the bruising and tenderness in no time. If you have any trouble breathing or any issues just come back.” She says with a smile as she holds the healing balm out to me.
I nod a thanks and take it from her hands before pushing off the bed. I was half expecting Garrick or Xaden to be waiting for me as I leave. But I don’t see them anywhere. Meaning they hadn’t heard yet. Or they were waiting for me somewhere. Due to the last class of the day still being on the corridors are quiet. Meaning the bathrooms would be as well. I decide to head there, knowing the healer would have only got some of the blood off my face and clothes. And my suspicions are correct as I stare into the mirror in the bathroom. Most of the blood around my nose and mouth is gone, but the blood that had worked its way down my neck hadn’t been touched. It almost looked like I had bathed in blood if the rest of my skin and clothes weren’t free of blood. That would be a sight to see. I quickly scrub the blood off my neck. I should have gone to my room and grabbed new clothes and showered. But with training with the other marked ones tonight, showering now probably wasn’t my smartest idea. As I leave the bathroom the corridors are filled with people and chatter. The last class of the day clearly done. I quickly rush over to my room, avoiding any stares that might feed any rumours that had started. I open my door, quickly shutting it behind me as I lean up against it, closing my eyes and sighing in relief.
”Who did this to you?” A gruff stern voice says from my desk.
I jump and nearly drop the healing balm in my hands, awkwardly juggling it till I catch it. I look over to meet Garrick’s gaze. Garrick who is leaning back in my desk chair, his feet resting on the desk as he twirls a dagger between his fingers. If it wasn’t for the words that had left his mouth I would find it attractive. And honestly still did. But with the fire and anger in his eyes, a chill runs down my spine. Garrick had clearly heard I had lost my challenge and ended up in the healers quadrant, but not to who. His eyes lower to my neck and uniform where some of the blood still lingers.
”It was just a challenge. It doesn’t matter.” I tell him as I go to walk behind him and place the healing balm on my bedside table.
But Garrick moves with a speed I’ve never seen before as his feet drop from the desk, turning the chair to grab my wrist, pulling me to a stop. Despite him sitting, I feel small under his gaze. His eyes commanding me to give up the information. This was why he was a section leader. He embodied leadership and authority without even trying.
”It. Matters.” He emphasises each word. “Now, who did this to you?”
”Why does it matter?” I say back as sternly as I can.
With the look in his eyes I know if I give up the name it wont end well for them. Even if it was a challenge where the goal was to fight each other and come out the other side the victor. Garrick didn’t care. He had always been protective of me. More so than any other marked cadet.
”I just want to talk to them.” He says with a smile, a smile that showed he did not want to just talk to them.
”We both know that is not what you are going to do.” I tell him before removing my arm from his grip and walking over to my bedside table.
I hear his slight chuckle at my words. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I turn to find him staring at me as I narrow my eyes at him. Garrick does his best attempt at a sweet smile, but with the anger still burning in his eyes contradicts it.
”You do. I can see it in your eyes. You do not want to just talk to them Gar. It was a challenge, they did what they were meant to do.”
”They hurt what I care about most.” He says as he stands, the chair sounding like it sighs in relief. He walks over and stands in front of me, grasping my chin between his fingers, forcing my face to look up at his. “So I will ask again sweet heart before I go find them another way. Who did this to you?”
My mind goes blank. Did… did Garrick just call me sweet heart? Wait. What he cares about most? I must look at him confused, as he smiles and chuckles at me He leans down, placing his mouth next to my ear.
”If you tell me who it is, I may just come back and reward you for it once I’m done talking.”
Before I can even think or register what I’ve done I blurt out the name of the cadet who I had been put up against for challenges. A sinister smirk gracing Garrick’s lips that has my heart fluttering.
”Good girl.” He whisper before kissing my cheek and walking out the door. Part 2

I wish you'd write a fic where reader is xadens younger sister and dating Garrick. But they date in secret (obviously xaden wouldnt be super thrilled at first when finding out) for like 2 years or so before they leave to go to Basgiath . Maybe when reader goes to cross the parapet Xaden notices garricks extra instruction. Maybe a slight brush on the back of the end before stepping on. And then Garrick and reader are caught by xaden and then his mad at first but relaxes off after watching Garrick protect her through out the year
When?
Xaden felt like an idiot. One big absolute idiot. He couldn’t believe that he was able to lead the rebellion but was quite literally fooled by the people closest to him. How did he miss the signs? Why didn’t his consciousness wave red flags back and forth. And he didn’t even figure it out on his own. No, no, fucking Imogen spelled it out for him.
“What are you smiling about all day?”, he had asked her as they counted up the weapons. Getting ready to distribute them overnight. Imogen shook her head as her smirk deepened, “Just Garrick”, she breathed. Xaden frowned, “Why are you smiling over Garrick? You don’t smile over a man”. Imogen rolled her eyes, “it has nothing to do with me, you idiot”, she snorted.
“Out with it, I don’t have time to play”, Xaden grumbled. Imogen placed down the dagger in her hands before looking up at her friend. “Didn’t you notice that he’s been different?”, she questioned. “Is he sick?”, Xaden smacked a question of his right back at her. “You are unbelievable”, she shook her head, “Do you seriously don’t see it?” Xaden blinked a couple of times. Nothing seemed off about his oldest friend. He was fine. Better than ever actually. “Xaden, Garrick looks at your sister as if she hung the moon up in the sky”, Imogen muttered, “He greeted me with a smile today”, her hands met Xaden’s shoulders as she shook him slowly, “A smile. S. M. I. L. E. Do you understand? That man hasn’t smiled ever since I met him”. But Xaden’s mind had clung to the first part of her words. Garrick liked his sister. No, this had to be a joke. Just Imogen didn’t look as if she was joking.
Ever since had made it his task to keep an eye out. Following you both. Sorting out through memories of you both. You had barely crossed the parapet six months ago. And yes Garrick had pulled you from the line when you came up. “Show me your shoes”, he had ordered, bending down to check them himself. Xaden hadn’t thought anything of it then. Had simply muttered, “Fuck you, I got her the shoes myself”, but he was so frightened to lose you that day that nothing else counted. Not the way Garrick had gripped the side of your face right before you stepped on. Not even the fact that Garrick had broken the board the names were scribbled on. Or how they had embraced each other when you were safely on the other side.
“Stop piling food on my plate”, you chuckled lightly, as Garrick spooned more veggie bake from his owl plate onto yours. “You need to eat more”, he stated, “You did well in training today”. Your eyes sparkled as you looked up at him. “You probably just went easy on me”, you shrugged. “I never go easy on anyone, love”, he reached out, brushing strands of your hair behind your ear, “Especially not when I want to impress you”. You hit his chest lightly, as your cheeks went pink, “You’re such a flirt”, “Only for you baby, only for you”, he traced the corner of your lips before picking up a for once again.
Xaden brooded in the knowledge of seeing it with his own two eyes. And then it’s as if someone had ripped the blindfold from his eyes. It was everywhere. Xaden saw it everywhere and it was so obvious. Garrick who was always first to leave the meeting now stood there, waiting for everyone to leave. Every time he walked past the girls he always made sure to brush his fingers along your back. Find contact with you no matter what. In a sea of cadets, his eyes were always on you.
“When?”, Xaden asked, yanking the back of Garrick’s shirt as the male left one of the meeting halls. Garrick didn’t miss a beat at batting his long-time friend’s hands off him, “Shit man you nearly got me”. But Xaden only puffed his chest more, “When?”, he repeated. Garrick frowned because Xaden was tiptoeing on the edge and he never lost his cool. A fear ran down his spine. What if something happened? What if you got hurt? Taken?
“What the fuck is going on?”, Garrick barely managed to grunt as Xaden’s left fists collided with his jaw. “Answer the fucking question goddamn”, he growled, clearly getting more and more frustrated. Garrick shoved him back slightly, “What in burning dragon shit has gotten into you?”.
A bitter laugh slipped past his friend’s lips, “I should be asking you that”, Xaden’s eyes were burning with anger, “you’re the one screwing my sister behind my back”, his voice raised ever so slightly. Garrick’s face blanched for a heartbeat before a wave of frustration ripped within him as well, “Don’t you dare put it like that”, he pointed a warning finger at Xaden who leaped forward, “You didn’t deny it, shitface”.
He wasn’t so sure if he wanted to punch or choke his long-time friend until a voice split the growing. “Stop this right now”, you called out, reaching to move for them but Garrick moved his free hand up, “Step aside Yn”. Yet another huff echoed, “Don’t tell her what to do”, Xaden bit back and it’s as if something shifted in Garrick, “I will because you are insane and I ain’t taking chances with you”, there was that primal almost frustrations in him. One that Xaden recognized because he too got overtaken by it when anyone got involved with Violet.
Yet still, Xaden pushed through, making sure to back Garrick against the wall, “I will make sure you die a painful…”, “Don’t you finish that Riorson”, you hissed from behind him, as you pulled at your brother’s upper arm. “You are grounded”, Xaden yanked his arm out of your grip, turning his frustration back on you.
“Listen to yourself, you sound like a child”, you said through gritted teeth. “Why was I not informed about this”, Xaden pointed between you and Garrick, before shaking his head, “This can’t be happening”. Garrick let out a low chuckle, “It has been for the past year and then some”, “Garrick”, you huffed pinching the bridge of your nose as he shrugged.
“She’s my sister! My”, Xaden shouted right at his friend's face, “And my girlfriend get in the line of being important to her”, Garrick said with a smirk. “I will choke you in your sleep”, Xaden leaned to tower over Garrick but he didn’t miss the beat doing just the same, “You can try”.
“Boys, please”, your voice was barely a whisper now, you could hear the sadness in it. Garrick’s head wiped in your direction instantly, “Don’t you dare get upset over this”, he hated it. Hated the sight of you sad. Of you upset. He could handle anything just not your tears. “Stop telling her what to do”, Xaden howled but this time Garrick was the one to shove him back before pointing a warning finger at him, “Riorson you are starting to get on my nerves”.
“Shut it, both of you”, you hissed, pushing your way between them and putting them at arm's length. “Garrick, I love you but please just stay quiet for a moment”, you glanced at your boyfriend, silently pleading with him, before your eyes turned to your brother.
“I’m sorry i should have told you”, you muttered. “Fuck yeah you should have”, he huffed. “But we had so little time. You both could have died, I could have died. We took a gamble just in case we survived and here we are”, you intertwined your fingers with Garrick’s and he instantly brought your joined hands up to his lips. Xaden inhaled sharply. “I’ve been really happy, Xaden”, you muttered quietly as your eyes glassed over with tears. Xaden reached out, pulling you closer to him, glaring at Garrick over your shoulder as he kissed the side of your head with a low whisper, “I know”.
You pulled back, hopeful eyes looking right into his soul. His little sister. The other half of his world. He only pushed through for you and Violet. A frown deepened between his brows before he managed to pull somewhat of a smile for you, kissing your forehead. “I will serve you your ass on the mats tomorrow”, Xaden shot a tight look Garrick’s way. He wasn’t ready to have a proper conversation with him yet. He will. He will put him from hell of his own. Just not now. “I’m looking forward to it”, Garrick nodded in agreement. Xaden turned to walk away before stopping. “A single hair breaks on her head and I am scattering you in ribbons”, he threatened, turning back to hold a warning stare with him. Garrick simply pulled you closer to his chest, wrapping his arms around you, “Believe me”, he breathed out, glancing down at you for a moment, “If a hair breaks I will go willingly”. And that was enough for Xaden. Because even if he was angry he knew that Garrick would fight till his last breath to make sure that you were okay and for that alone, he couldn’t bring himself to hate him.

Madness - Chapter 3
Hi guys! With this chapter we're finally at Basgiath. From this point it will be more exciting, at least I hope so. Aaaand there are some Liam and Garrick moment. Enjoy it :)
Warning: It's a war college, you know the drill
Blue dragons descend from the extraordinary Gormfaileas line. Known for their formidable size, they are the most ruthless, especially in the case of the rare Blue Daggertail, whose knifelike spikes at the tip of their tail can disembowel an enemy with one flick.
– Colonel Kaori’s Field Guide to Dragonkind
If Jack wants to kill me, he needs to get in line. Besides, I have a feeling Xaden Riorson is going to beat him to it.
“Not today,” I respond to Jack, the hilt of my dagger solid in my hand, and I somehow manage to suppress a shudder in disgust as he leans over and breathes in. He’s scenting me like a fucking dog. Then he scoffs and walks off into the crowd of celebrating cadets and riders that’s gathered in the sizable courtyard of the citadel.
It’s still early, probably around nine, but already I see there aren’t as many cadets as there were candidates ahead of us in line. Based on the overwhelming presence of leather, both the second- and third-years are here as well, taking stock of the new cadets.
The rain eases into a drizzle, as if it had only come to make the hardest test of my life even harder…but I did it. We did it.
We’re alive.
I made it.
“Vi, we did it. It’s over.” I turn to her with a relieved laugh.
“Yeah, you’re right.” And I saw her body begins to tremble. She takes a step and I see her sway a little.
“Come on, we need to explore this fantastic place.” I try to distract the people around us in hope they won’t notice Violet’s condition. I grab her arm as if I want to hurry her, when in reality I only want to support her.
“I think you made an enemy there,” the redhead says, casually shifting the lethal crossbow she wears strapped along her shoulder. She glances at us over the scroll with a shrewd look in her hazel eyes as she looks me up and down. “I’d watch your back with that one if I were you.”
I nod. I know that we will become irresistable targets.
Shit, I knew it before the Parapet, it’s just now it feels all too real. As if I make a mistake then Violet’s or my life is over. I can manage myself quite decently, but I grew up with Vi, and I really like her despite her naive way of thinking. I mean she wanted to be a scribe for her whole life and now she have to watch her back for 24/7. I feel sorry for her. My only option was to be a rider, but I wanted to be a rider, unlike her.
The next candidate approaches from the Parapet as someone grips Violet’s shoulders and spins her around.
My dagger is halfway up when I realize it’s Rhiannon.
“We made it!” She grins at us.
“We made it.” Repeats Vi with a forced smile, that I know all too well.
I manage to sheath my dagger at my ribs, with my other hand still holding up Violet.
Now that we’re here, as cadets, can we trust her? Probably yes, but we’ll see it.
“I can’t thank you enough. There were at least three times I would have fallen off if you hadn’t helped me. You were right - those soles were slick as shit. Have you seen the people around here? I swear I just saw a second-year with pink streaks in her hair, and one guy has dragon scales tattooed up his entire biceps.”
“Conformity is for the infantry,” I say as she loops her arm through Violets and tugs us along toward the crowd.
Damn it. Violet surely hit her knee when she tripped on the stones. I can feel her leaning on me more.
“Speaking of which,” she says, glancing down. “We need to trade boots. There’s a bench-“
A tall figure in a pristine black uniform steps out of the crowd, charging toward us, and Violet stumbles into his chest.
“Violet?” He asks.
Fuck that’s Dain Aetos.
I was hoping to see him much, much later.
Well, truthfully…never.
Violet looks like a lovesick puppy. Smiling… and that’s a blush?
Gods help me.
I really don’t like Aetos. Violet thinks that he’s a charming and kind, good man, but I doubt that. There’s something in his eyes that screams he wants to know all of your secrets. As if he wants to open your skull and drag out every dirty little secret that you own. I believe that he will betray every single one of us if his father gave him the order.
“What the hell are you doing here?” He barks, the shock in his eyes transforming to something deadly.
“Dain. It’s good to see you.” I greet him in a sweet voice.
In this moment Violet’s knees gives out and I had to use both of my arms to keep her up.
“Damn it, Violet” he mutters, hauling her back on her feet. With one hand on her back and the other under her elbow, he quickly guides us away from the crowd and into an alcove in the wall, close to the first defensive turret of the citadel. It’s a shady, hidden spot with a hard wooden bench, which he sits Violet on.
“I’m going to be sick.” She says.
“Just breathe Vi, you’re going to be okay.” I try to reassure her.
“Head between your knees,” Dain orders in a harsh tone as he starts to rub circles on her back. “It’s the adrenaline. Give it a minute and it’ll pass.” I hear approaching footsteps on the gravel. “Who the hell are you?”
“I’m Rhiannon. I’m Aelin’s and Violet’s…friend.”
“Listen to me, Rihannon. Violet is fine,” he commands. “And if anyone asks, then you tell them exactly what I said, that it’s just the adrenaline working out of her system. Understand?”
“It’s no one’s business what’s going on with Violet” I hiss at him sharply.
“Agree, so I wouldn’t say shit.” Rhiannon backs me up.
“You’d better mean that,” he warns us.
“Fuck off Dain. You know that I care about Violet. You don’t have to play the boss here.” I grimace.
“I’m a second-year rider, cadet” he growls.
“I don’t give a shit if it’s about Violet. Besides it’s just us here, who will know if I don’t show you the respect you deserve?” I ask him with a smile.
“No one can see you here Vi, so take your time,” Dain says softly.
He’s ignoring me. That’s fine with me.
“Because puking my guts up after surviving the Parapet and the asshole who wanted to throw me off it would be considered weak.” Violet rises slowly, sitting upright.
“Exactly,” he answers. “Are you hurt?”
“My knee is sore,” she whispers.
“That’s all? You’re sure?” His hands run down on Vi’s sides. “Are you wearing daggers?”
“Three at my ribs and one in my boot.”
“And she knows how to use them.” I butt in.
“Huh.” He looks at me as if he want to say something then his gaze slides to my boots then to Rihannon’s. “Get your boots switched. You two look ridiculous. Vi, do you trust this one?” He nods toward Rhiannon.
“Ridiculous my ass.” I mutter then I take off my left boot to switch back with Rhiannon. My darling comfy boots. “And it’s her and not this.” I add helpfully.
Vi snickers and nods.
“All right.” Dain turns toward us. There are sheats at the sides of his leathers, too, but there are daggers in each of them. “I’m Dain Aetos, and I’m the leader for Second Squad, Flame Section, Second Wing.”
Wow. A squad leader? I wonder how can he managed to become one. He’s an ass. But that means I better watch him.
The highest rank among the cadets in the quadrant are wingleader and section leader. Both positions are held by elite third-years. Second-years can rise to squad leaders, but only if they’re exceptional. Everyone else is simply a cadet before Threshing - when the dragons choose who they will bond - and a rider after. People die too often around here to hand out ranks prematurely.
“Parapet should be over in the next couple of hours, depending on how fast the candidates cross or fall. Go find the redhead with the roll - she’s usually carrying a crossbow - and tell her that Dain Aetos put both of you and Violet Sorrengail into his squad. If she questions you, tell her she owes me from saving her ass at Threshing last year. I’ll bring Violet back to the courtyard shortly.”
“Wait! Where are you taking her?” I ask suddenly.
“It’s none of you business cadet Melgren.”
“Aelin, just go. I’ll be fine with Dain.” Violet says, trying to ease my suspicion.
I glance at her and Rhiannon.
“Go before someone sees us,” Dain barks.
“Shit. Fine.”
I say then Rhiannon and I are trying to find the woman Dain mentioned. It’s not an easy job with so many people gathering here.
“Look, there.” Rhiannon points toward the other side of the courtyard.
“Hey, there.” Rhiannon greets the redhead woman as we approach her.
“What do you want?” She eyes us suspiciously.
“Dain Aetos sent us to told you that he wants both of us and Violet Sorrengail in his squad.” Continues Rhiannon
“Dain? Why would he do that?”
“Because he’s a fucking teddy bear at heart.” I said sarcastically.
“She’s just kidding.” Rhiannon interrupts me, and elbows me in the ribs. “He told us to tell you that you owe him for Threshing.”
“Fine. I can put you and cadet Sorrengail in his squad, but not Melgren. I received instructions from a superior about her.”
“Who gave these ’instructions’?” I ask her.
“I can’t tell. Now I’ll go, I don’t have time for chatting you.” Leaves us the woman.
“Higher ranking than Dain? Do you have an idea who gave that order?” She asks curiously.
“No, I don’t.” I say. I mean I have ideas but I don’t know for sure. “Let’s split up. I want to observe the other cadets.”
“Well then see ya later.”
I walk to a spot where I can see everyone in the courtyard and then I lean against the wall. There’s more and more people. Surely we will be over a couple of hundreds cadets this year. I mused in myself when a light blonde man approached me.
“Hi. Why are you so far away from everyone?” He asks.
“I don’t need friends or whatever so go away.” I say sharply.
“Good. I just wanted to find a quiet corner.” He answers with a smile.
“Then try to find it elsewhere.” I snap back at him.
I don’t want to make friends or get acquainted with the other cadets. Most of them are going to die, and if I have to kill one of them to save our lives, I don’t want to hesitate. But why is this man staying here with me? It’s not like that I was kind to him. Actually I was a real bitch. So what does he want?
I glance at him at the corner of my eyes. He’s tall, has light blonde hair and blue eyes. Quite handsome. He shifted his weight and now I can see his other arm. The dark lines in his skin. A rebellion relic.
“My name is Liam Mairi.” He says turning fully to me. “ And you? Or should I call you Snappy?”
“Don’t you dare!” I glare at him. “I’m Aelin Melgren.”
“Melgren?” He asks “Then I think you know what is this.” He points to his arm with the relic.
“Yeah, so what?” I ask.
“It does not bother you?” He lifts his brows.
“Why would it? It’s not like you did something to deserve it.” I say silently looking at his arm.
“I like you Melgren. You can be my friend.” He smiles at me.
“Who said I want to be your friend?” I narrow my eyes.
“Then I will be your friend. Snappy.” Liam winks at me.
“This is the most ridiculous nickname I’ve ever heard.” I hiss at him. “I have a name you know.”
“Liam. I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” I hear a voice calling to Liam. “What are you doing here?”
“I made a friend.” He answers smiling.
“I already said that I don’t need friends.” I roll my eyes at him.
“And I said that I will be your friend. You’re stuck with me.” Then he turns to the man in front of us. “She’s Aelin Melgren, she doesn’t know how to behave properly, and a little bit snappy, but that’s fine.”
“Melgren?” The man asks in front of me.
“Yeah, so what? You’ve got a problem?” I grumble with raised eyebrows. I’m really bored that everybody asks the same questions. All the time. Melgren? That Melgren? General Melgren’s daughter? It’s really tiring. I sigh.
“No. It’s just surprising that he sent his own daughter to this death roll school.”
“Well it clearly shows that you don’t know him.” I laugh bitterly. “And who the hell are you?” I look at him properly for the first time since he’s here.
The first thing that I notice are his eyes. They has a beatiful hazel color, with dark curly hair that looks really, really soft. Oh and he’s fucking tall. And I saw a rebellion relic on his arm too. That explains why they know each other.
And what is it with this school? Only handsome men attends it? God, the world is soo cruel.
“I’m Garrick Tavis.” He nods at me, then turns to Liam. “You should join the crowd, it will starts soon.” With that said he walks away without sparing a glance at me.
“Let’s go Aelin.” Liam says while looking at me, waiting to join the other cadets.
“Fiinee.” I sigh then follow him.
The clouds are breaking, and the drizzle is burning off as the gravel crunches beneath my feet on my way toward the riders and cadets. The massive courtyard is shaped like an angular teardrop, the rounded end is formed by a giant outer wall at least ten feet thick. Along the sides are stone halls. I know the four-story building carved into the mountain with the rounded end is for academics, and the one on the right, towering over the cliff, is the dorms. The imposing rotunda linking the two buildings also serves as the entrance to the gathering hall, commons, and a library behind it. There’s stone dais on the right side of the Parapet, occupied by two uniformed men I recognize as the commandant and executive commandant, both in full military dress, their medals winking in the sunlight. Then finally the last of the cadets walks into the courtyard, followed by the riders from the other turret.
Xaden is among them. It’s not just his height that makes him stand out in this crowd but the way the other riders all seem to move around him, like he’s a shark and they’re all fish giving him a wide berth. For a second, I can’t help but wonder what his signet is, the unique power from the bond with his dragon, and if that’s why even the third-years seem to scurry out of his way as he strides up to the dais with lethal grace. There are ten of them in total up there now, and from the way Commandant Panchek moves to the front, facing us seems that we’re about to start.
“Three hundred and one of you have survived the Parapet to become cadets today” Commandant Panchek starts with a politician’s smile, gesturing to us.
“The guy has always talked with his hands.” I whisper to Liam. He doesn’t answer just gives me a look which I know is meant to silence me. It’s a shame because I really like to comment these things. “Good job. Sixty-seven did not.”
„As the Codex says, now you begin the true crucible!” Panchek shouts, his voice carrying over the five hundred of us that I estimate are in this courtyard. „You will be tested by your superiors, hunted by your peers, and guided by your instincts. If you survive to Threshing, and if you are chosen, you will be riders. Then we’ll see how many of you make it to graduation.”
„Your instructors will teach you,” Panchek promises, his hand sweeping to the line of professors standing at the doors to the academic wing. „It’s up to you how well you learn.” He swings his pointer finger at us. „Discipline falls to your units, and your wingleader is the last word. If I have to get involved…” A slow, sinister smile spreads across his face. „You don’t want me involved.”
„With that said, I’ll leave you to your wingleaders. My best advice? Don’t die.” He walks off the dais with the executive commandant, leaving only the riders on the stone stage.
A brunette woman with wide shoulders and a scarred sneer stalks forward, the silver spikes on the shoulder of her uniform flashing in the sunlight. „I’m Nyra, the senior wingleader of the quadrant and the head od the First Wing. Section leaders and squad leaders, take your positions now.”
People starts pushing past us until there are about fifty people in front of us, spaced out in formation.
„First Squad! Claw Section! First Wing!” Nyra calls out.
A man closer to the dais raises his hand.
„Cadets, when your name is called, take up formation behind your squad leader” Nyra instructs.
The redhead with the crossbow and roll steps forward and begins calling names. One by one, cadets move from the crowd to the formation, and I keep count, making snap judgments based off clothing and arrogance. It looks like each squad will have about fifteen or sixteen people in it.
Jake is called into the Flame Section of First Wing.
Rhiannon and Violet are both called to Second Squad, Flame Section, Second Wing. Good, at least they together. Now which wing I will be in?
„Second Squad, Tail Section, Fourth Wing.” the redhead continues.
„Liam Mairi” He grins at me, then goes to join his squad.
„Aelin Melgren” It seems that I have no luck today, I sigh and the sorting continue.
„Hi Snappy. It’s good to see you can’t let me go.” Liam winks
„Shut up. It’s not like it was my choice” I grumble. But I admit that it could be worse.
We’re silent as the rest of the cadets are called. The sun is out in full now, beating into my leathers and scorching my skin.
When the order sounds, we all turn to face the dais. I try to keep my gaze on the roll-keeper, but my eyes jerk right like the traitors they are, and my pulse leaps.
Xaden watches me with a cold, calculating look that feels like he’s plotting my death from where he stands as the wingleader for Fourth Wing.
As I said no luck today. Shit. He’s my wingleader. And he’s still handsome.
I lift my chin.
He cocks his scarred eyebrow. Then he turns his attention to Violet and he says something to Second Wing’s wingleader, and then every wingleader joins in on what’s obviously a heated discussion.
Finally, the wingleaders turn around to face us, and the slight tilt to Xaden’s lips makes me instantly queasy.
„Dain Aetos, you and your squad will switch with Aura Beinhaven’s” Nyra orders.
Wait. What? Who is Aura Beinhaven?
Dain nods, then turns to his squad. „Follow me.” He says it once, then strides through formation. They’re moving to Fourth Wing. My wing. Xaden’s wing.
„Shiit, it gets better and better” I murmur.
There’s a fucking smirk on Xaden’s arrogant, and handsome face.
Then it clicks.
We’re entirely at his mercy, a subordinate in his chain of command. He can punish us however he likes for the slightest infraction, even imaginary ones.
Nyra looks at Xaden as she finishes assingments, and he nods, stepping forward and finally breaking our staring contest.
„You’re all cadets now.” Xaden’s voice carries out over the courtyard, stronger than the others. „Take a look at your squad. These are the only people guaranteed by Codex not to kill you. But just because they can’t end your life doesn’t mean others won’t. You want a dragon? Earn one.”
Most of the others cheer, but I keep my mouth shut. Liam as well.
Xaden’s eyes find mine, and my stomach clenches before he looks away. „And I bet you feel pretty badass right now, don’t you, first-years?”
More cheers.
„You feel invincible after the Parapet, don’t you?” Xaden shouts. „You think you’re untouchable! You’re on the way to becoming the elite! The few! The chosen!”
„Man, he completly lost it.” I facepalmed.
„Shh.” Hisses at me Liam.
„What? It’s true.” I blink confusedly.
„Maybe, but it’s not the right time to talk about this way for your wingleader.” He explains and I shrug. Whatever.
Another round of cheers goes up with each declaration, louder and louder.
No. That’s not just cheering, it’s the sound of wings betaing the air into submission.
Oh. My. God. They’re magnificent.
Just when I think they’re about to fly overhead, they pitch vertically, whip the air with their huge semitranslucent wings, and stop, the gusts of wing-made wind so powerful that I nearly stagger backward as they land on the outer semicircular wall. Their chest scales ripple with movement, and their razor-sharp talons dig into the edge of the wall on either side. Now I understand why the walls are ten feet thick. It’s not a barrier. The edge of the fortress is a damned perch.
A few cadets scream.
Guess everyone wants to be a dragon rider until they’re actually twenty feet away from one.
Steam blasts my face as the navy-blue one directly in front of me exhales through its wide nostrils. Its glistening blure horns rise above its head in an elegant, lethal sweep, and its wings flare momentarily before tucking in, the tip of their top joint crowned by a single fierce talon. Beautiful.
Their tails are just as fatal, but I can’t see them at this angle or even tell which breed of dragon each is without that clue.
All are deadly.
There are three dragons in various shades of red, two shades of green – like Tein, Mira’s dragon – one brown, one orange and the enermous navy one ahead of me. They’re all massive, overshadowing the structure of the citadel as they narrow their golden eyes at us in absolute judgment.
If they didn’t need us puny humans to develop signet abilities from bonding and weave the protective wards they power around Navarre, I’m pretty sure they’d eat us all and be done. But they like protecting the Vale – the valley behind Basgiath the dragons call home – from merciless gryphons, and we like living, so here we are in the most unlikely partnerships.
A cadet bolts out of Third Wing, screaming as he makes a run for the stone keep behind us. We all turn to look as he sprints for the giant arched door at the center. I can almost see the words carved into the arch from here, but I already know them by heart. A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead.
Once bonded, riders can’t live without their dragons, but most dragons can live just fine after us. It’s why they choose carefully, so they’re not humiliated by picking a coward, not that a dragon would ever admit to making a mistake.
The red dragon on the left opens its vast mouth, revealing teeth as big as I am. That jaw could crush me if it wanted, like a grape. Fire erupts along its tounge, then shoots outward in a macabre blaze toward the fleeing cadet.
He’s a pile of ash on the gravel before he can even make it to the shadow of the keep.
Sixty-eight dead.
Heat from the flames blasts the side of my face as I jerk my attention forward. If anyone else runs and is likewise executed, I won’t watch it. More screaming sounds around me.
There are two more gusts of heat, one to my left and then another to my right.
Make that seventy.
The navy dragon seems to tilt its head at me, as if its narrowed golden eyes can see straight through me.
I force my shoulders back and lift my chin.
The dragon blinks, which might be a sign of approval, or boredom, and looks away.
„Anyone else feel like changing their mind?” Xaden shouts, scanning the remaining rows of cadets with the same shrewd gaze of the navy-blue dragon behind him. „No? Excellent. Roughly half of you will be dead by this time next summer.” The formation is silent except for a few untimely sobs from my left. „A third of you again the year after that, and the same your last year. No one cares who your mommy or daddy is here. Even King Tauri’s second son died during his Threshing. So tell me again? Do you feel invincible now that you’ve made it into the Riders Quadrant? Untouchable? Elite?”
No one cheers.
Another blast of heat rushes – this time directly at my face – and every muscle in my body clenches. But it’s not flames…just steam, and it blows back my hair as the dragons finish their simultaneous exhale.
They want us scared. Mission accomplished.
„Because you’re not untouchable or special to them.” Xaden points toward the navy dragon and leans forward slightly, like he’s letting us in on a secret as we lock eyes. „To them, you’re just the prey.”

Three years…three years I had spent in that toxic cesspool of a relationship. For what? For everything I had an intuition about to be true? Fucking incredible. Nothing like being right and a fool, maybe once RSC started Malek could put me out of my misery, and save me from the overwhelming amount of embarrassment I felt. The clock tower in the courtyard sounded alerting it was a quarter to 8, indicating it was almost time for Battle Brief as the chatter in the halls started to die down outside my door.
I sighed, finally rolling myself out of bed after lying there, staring at the ceiling replaying the events of last night since the alarm on my bedside table went off an hour ago, but I was numbly stuck in the warmth of my blankets. What a waste of time… I’ve repeated that to myself for what felt like the umpteenth time that morning.
I barely had enough time to get dressed in the navy blue uniform I grew accustomed to, and put my auburn hair into the slicked-back bun I had to wear, my hair was barely unkempt and uniform not as crisp as the codex required. I was sure to get yelled at by one of the executive lieutenants today, but I didn’t quite care, too numb to feel the usual anxiety I would feel about abiding by the stupid little handbook we were given in the beginning of the year. I dreaded every second of the thought of going to Battle Brief. Being forced into proximity with Zachariah made my stomach churned at the flashbacks of last night.
Minimal conversation was my goal for today, I thought, setting the agenda internally for myself as I walked to Battle Brief. Just make sure my battalion doesn’t do anything stupid and stay in line. I didn’t need to get reprimanded anymore than I probably already would be today. Plus after the night I had prior, I just couldn’t bother with much interaction with anyone. It’s bad enough I had to show up for classes. I put my bag on my shoulder and made sure that my door was locked as I made my way to the academic wing of the infantry quadrant. I was never more thankful for having my own room, one of the primary perks of being a Battalion leader.
I entered the somewhat crowded hall that was used for Battle Brief. A giant map in the middle of the room, showing all of Navarre. Keeping my head down as I made my way to my usual spot.
"Allie you missed breakfast." My best friend, Katia, said concerned. I slid into my seat between her and my twin brother, Drew. He offered a tight-lipped smile in greeting. “You’re going to be sluggish through morning lessons.” She added.
"Fuck off, I’m not gonna die if I miss breakfast." I whispered snappily.
"Eat this," Drew said with a roll of his eyes, ignoring my foul mood, tossing an orange to me.
It landed on my desk with a thud, as I wasn't paying him any mind, no, my sole attention at this point was on my ex and the girl that had her arm wrapped around his waist as they walked into the enormous classroom. "Fucking hells, Chiara Reid?” Drew hissed lowly to us as they walked by.
"Oh shit?" Left the girl besides me lips as they both realized the cause of my current mood. Katia’s eyes now set to a death glare at the pair that passed by.
“I saw them kissing in the library last night. Dumb ass tried denying it all.” I sneered, pushing the lump that had formed in my throat down.
It was the last straw of the tension that had been building between us in the last few weeks. We had been together since we were teenagers, but I guess that hadn’t accounted for anything when you attend war college together.
The last few months were filled with fighting and arguing over his lingering eyes and neglectful behavior. It had driven me mad to the point that I felt crazy for even accusing him of such thoughts of cheating, but last night had confirmed my intuition was right. Fighting the burn in my eyes as silver tears lined them, threatening to spill. I would not get upset over some loser. Katia grabbed my hand, rubbing small circles on the back of it.
“I’m gonna beat his fucking ass.” Drew glowered, gripping his notebook until his knuckles turned white.
"It's not worth it Drew, he's in our squad you know the penalty," I murmured, glancing his way. "I guess I'm out of a best friend now.” He mumbled, slouching in his seat. I placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, feeling guilty that I got in the way of their friendship.
Katia scoffed, “You’re more worried about losing a best friend than the fact he treated your sister like shit? Unbelievable Drew…”
“Yeah, well he was my friend first, and I warned him—” My twin grumbled, leaning over me to glare at her.
“Warned him? I fucking told him I’d castrate him if he ever did something to Al. And unlike your pansy ass I fully intend on keeping my promise.” Her green eyes were darkened.
Drew continued to haughtily argue in a hushed whisper with her trying to prove whatever point. I kept opening my mouth to try to shut them up, but they just kept volleying back and forth retorts to one another before I could get a word in.
I rubbed my temples, trying to focus on what our professor was debriefing instead. I didn’t expect my breakup to cause a full argument between the two people closest to me. Any other topic? Yes. Not this though.
Their voices started to raise as they used meaningless insults as jabs towards one another, causing the attention of the cadets around us to look at us. Including Zachariah and Chiara. The girl only had a smug smirk on her face, which made the impreding frustration that had been rising since I woke up grow even more.
“Silence.” Our professor yelled across the room. I slid myself down into my seat, making myself as small as possible in the crowd of infantry cadets now looking our way.
"Henricks', Lalley I didn't realize this was a socializing hour." The professor shouted mockingly. Instantly, Katia and Drew shut up, muttering coy apologies, both embarrassed they were caught.
“Now can we turn our attention back to the map.” The professor continued the lesson. I had to pinch Katia’s arm as she reached behind me to flick Drew on the side of the head. An “ow” leaving her lips as she finally stopped and actually started to take notes for class.
These two would be the death of me…
Tumblr media
"Look I know you guys dated for years, but you had a hunch. Think of this as a celebration of a new chapter?” Katia sighed, stopping mid-route in our evening run.
"I just don't feel like doing anything extra this weekend, especially socializing." I groaned, lifting my hands and resting them on top of my head.
"Which is exactly what you need, to socialize." A mischievous glint sparkled in Katia's hazel eyes. I didn't like that glint. She had always been the rebellious one since we became friends years ago. She always got into trouble, and then I had to bail her out or succumb to her ideas. “We should definitely go to Chantara tomorrow night.”
She used any excuse to find a way to party or sneak off campus. I’m surprised I’ve upheld my titles with her as my executive squad leader with the antics she always seemed to get us into.
"This is the one weekend I'd rather just stay in my room—" I started to protest going back into a jog.
"Just humor me, Henrick." She rolled her eyes. "Besides, I'm finding the infantry dating pool rather incestuous at this point." She pointed in her mouth, making a gagging noise as she kept up her pace with me. "Anddddd Garrick and Xaden will be there and you're finally a single woman." She wagged her eyebrows at me. I just rolled my eyes at the suggestive expression on her face knowing what she was thinking.
"Fine." I huffed in the refreshing air of a late summer evening.
"Yay!" She squealed excitedly. "We're gonna have so much fun! Not to mention Garrick looked like he wanted to beat Zach's guts out before Drew stopped him; after the little spat you two had last weekend."
Garrick and Xaden…Any mingling between Riders and Infantry was frowned upon. The codex even goes as far to state there will be no toleration of inter-quadrant dating during a student’s attendance at Basgiath. But that hadn’t stopped us from becoming friends with riders. The four of us hit it off the first night we met.
I thought to myself silently as I thought back to that first night out in town during first year.
Tumblr media
"Damn, we both clean up nice." Katia whistled.
She wasn't wrong, despite wearing our infantry winter fur-lined jackets, we looked good. We didn't have to wear our typical uniformed sleek buns, and finally could let our hair down for once. Despite the anxiety that brewed in the pit of my stomach, I was excited that my best friend had convinced me to sneak out.
I shook my head, "You're crazy, you know that right?" She linked her arm with mine, grinning maniacally in response as we left the barracks.
She led me through tunnels and stairs I’ve never been in since we started infantry a few months ago. “How do you know about this?” I asked again. She’s been rather elusive and secretive on how she even learned about Chantara, the town older Basgiath students would frequent on the weekends to drink, party, and shop at.
She pushed her brunette hair over her shoulder, shooting a wink at me. “It’s amazing what intel you can gather with incredible charm, good looks…a few gold coins.”
We reached an ancient iron gate that a couple second years were standing at. The smell of churam filled the air, making my nose scrunch up. The codex said the herb was forbidden from school property?
One of the second years grinned seeing my best friend. “Lalley, you’ve got some guts. I didn’t think you and your friend would actually show up.”
She walked up to the man, her smile alluring radiating under the dim patterns that lined the stone walls. “My promises and threats are never empty.” Reaching into her pocket, she set two gold coins down into the guy’s hand.
He handed a coin back to her, “promise me a game of darts later at Féasta?”
“Yeah, sure.” She replied coolly, her tone sultry. Though I could tell by the look in her eye, that was one promise she wouldn’t be following up on. I was ready to lose my composure, biting my lip to stifle the laugh about to fall from my lips.
His grin grew even broader. “Sweet, just follow the path through the clearing and you’ll see a fork—take the left. We just let a group of riders through not too long ago. Just follow their obnoxiously loud yelling if you’re unsure.”
She linked her arm with mine, using her free hand to wiggle her fingers at the man in goodbye. “Thanks Trey.”
She discreetly dragged me outside a reasonable distance from the gate before I burst out in giggles. “Thanks Trey?” Mocking her flirty tone.
“Listen,” she giggled lightly herself. “Desperate times call for desperate measures. And I’m desperate for a drink and a dance.”
“It must be so hard to be single.” I said sarcastically.
“We all can’t be fortunate to have their hometown sweetheart attend War college with us now can we?” She used her linked elbow to nudge me, causing me to shy away from her. She just pulled me closer. “You owe me the favor of being a wing woman tonight, I’ve covered for you and Zach too many times this year… and we haven’t even made it to squad assignments yet.”
“Whatever you say Kati.” I just rolled my eyes, shaking my head at her.
The walk into Chantara was brisk, as we giggled about what we should expect for our first night out of Basgiath. The town was lively, citizens of the town and students all throughout the town square browsing the market stalls that lined the cobblestone. Strings of lights glimmered lining the stalls, while musicians played on the corners. Everything was so lively to what we were expecting. There were three different taverns in the town square: Féastas, Lúchás, and Doyle’s. We decided to try Lúchás first seeing the group of riders Trey was talking about wandering in there, along with some couple infantry and healers.
“I knew I should have ordered food when I was up there because I’m starving.” My best friend said as she came back to our table with Lavender Lemonades.
The bar wasn’t crazy packed due to the cold weather, but there was a sizable amount of patrons in here. It was cozy, we had a table right next to the hearth, and I could see why most of the patrons were Basgiath students. The music from the band wasn’t ancient sounding, and the barmaids weren’t either. It was very youthful and merry than the taverns we had back home. Scanning over the decent sized room, my eyes landed on the opposite side of the room. On two riders more specifically, the one looked to be Katia’s type. Tall, tanned skin, dark hair. Though a scar marred his eye, it didn’t take away from his handsomeness. He would be perfect for her.
I did promise an attempt at being her wing woman tonight. My eyes kept lingering on the man next to him. He had an inch or two on his friend, longer dark hair that was more styled than his friend's unruly short waves. The most built man I’ve ever seen, Amari had to have designed her herself, his relic a masterpiece expertly marking his bulky biceps. I have a boyfriend…
“Huh?” I said as she was trying to get my attention, my gaze not leaving the far left corner of the room.
“For once would you not be in a daydream!” She chuckled until her gaze followed mine. “Oh wow, they’re hot.” She blurted.
"Shh, don't be that obvious," I said, slapping her shoulder while we both took in two very tall and handsome riders in their black leathers.
“Oh please like they aren’t even looking our way.” She scoffed, taking a sip of her drink.
But they were, well at least the taller one was looking directly at me as his friend tried to get his attention. And I couldn’t help to unabashedly stare back.
Tumblr media
Garrick’s POV
“Garrick!” Xaden half raised his voice snapping his fingers at me, drawing my attention back to our usual corner of the tavern.
“What?” I peered over to my best friend.
“Were you even listening to what I said?” He acted annoyed.
‘Don't lie, you weren't.’ Chradh chuckled.
‘Are all dragons as sarcastic and grumpy as you?’ I chidded back getting only a huff of hot air as my answer. "Yeah, something about… OK yeah no."
Xaden chuckled, finally noticing what had caught my attention across the tavern floor. "You're obviously looking at the shorter infantry cadet, aren't you?” He nudged my side. “Only you would be the one to be six-six, and have a thing for extremely short girls, dude. She can’t even be more than five foot nothing dude.” He rattled off.
Xaden had a thing to point out the obvious and be rather talkative once he had a couple drinks in his system. Reminding me of his younger cousin, Bodhi, every time I had drank with him. I paid no mind to his rambling as I walked to the table the two infantry girls sat at.
“Where are you going? You don't even know if she's single." Xaden started to say as I couldn't help myself. I heard my best friend mutter a curse and his footsteps behind me.
"Could I fancy you two ladies to a friendly game of pool?" I asked the two girls. The taller one looked like she was about to speak first, but the shorter cadet with auburn hair was the first to open her mouth.
“Not even a ‘hi what’s your name?’ Typical rider fashion.” She had a brow arched in my direction, causing her best friend to giggle as she teasingly scoffed in my direction. Holding out her hand she beamed up at me. “I’m Allie, and this is Katia.”
Tumblr media
That evening was the first night of what started the friendship of two first-year infantry cadets and two first-year rider cadets. Our friendship only grew over the last year as Drew and Zachariah started joining us. Though Drew and Zach were wary of the riders at first due to silly rivalry between the quadrants.
The next night, Katia met me outside in the alcove of the infantry courtyard like we always had since that winter in first year. The only difference was we no longer had to cough up gold coins to pay our way into town, and could go freely.
Our walk into Chantara was enjoyable as today had been the coldest day in July after our new cadets had joined us just a few weeks ago. My heart rate was almost pounding in my chest as we neared the tavern. Why was I so nervous? Yes this was my first trip into the town as a newly single woman, but that didn’t change much? It already felt like I was single by the end of first year anyway, and we’ve been to Chantara plenty of times since then.
We made our way to our usual end of the tavern where our crew usually hung out which now consisted of Drew, Katia, Xaden, Garrick, and myself. I noticed three extra bodies, two I didn't recognize at all but one had a shorter but similar build to Xaden, the second a female abou Katia’s height with short pink hair that was half shaven. Of course, Drew was shamelessly trying to flirt with her. Then there was the familiar mop of curly-haired dirty blonde 20-year-old I'd recognize anywhere.
"Sawyer!" I said excitedly, wrapping my younger cousin into a tight hug.
"Missed you too, Big Al." He chuckled. I flicked his ear at the mocking nickname.
Sawyer was all that Drew and I had left for our family. Our parents were in infantry while Sawyer's were riders and we lost all of them in an ambush on an outpost several years ago, including Katia’s; her mom a rider and father an infantry cadet. The four of us easily had become a found family of our own.
We were introduced to the other new first-year riders; the man that looked like Xaden was his younger cousin, Bodhi, and the pink haired girl was Imogen. I remember Garrick and Xaden telling us stories about them, so it already felt like I somewhat knew them. Bodhi seemed more eager to talk to us than Imogen. She stood by Sawyer and Xaden’s younger cousin a majority of the time. Even as Katia tried to compliment her hair, she offered dry responses. But everyone fell into a familiar session of banter and catching up on what's been going on for the last couple of weeks.
Throughout the night, I got lost in my thoughts. The summertime had the bar packed to the point everything was so overstimulating. The music, the loud chatter, it was too much. Why did I even come here? It was stupid to listen to Katia, I should have just stayed back in my dorm. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, but I wasn’t.
Then I saw the familiar sandy brown hair at the entrance to the tavern. Zachariah. Chiara in tow with him, as I made eye contact with my ex. His face looked as if he saw a ghost, and quickly pulled her to the other side of the bar.
“Allie, what the fuck?” Sawyer was the first to speak up.
“Yeah isn’t that your boyfriend?” Xaden offered a glare towards the shorter man across the crowded room.
“Was her boyfriend,” Katia sneered. “Two timing piece of worthless—”
“Kati.” Drew gave her a look of warning.
“I still haven’t got to fulfill my promise.” She leaned back in the booth, crossing her arms. Xaden, who sat next to her, playfully shoved the side of her head.
“Pipe down, firecracker. You’re not going to do shit.” He smirked, as she swatted his hands away.
“Riorson, it was hair washing day.” She groaned. I rolled my eyes at her dramatics. At all my friend’s dramatics actually. I didn’t want to discuss the newly ended relationship tonight or have it made a big deal. But also I certainly wasn’t expecting Zach to show up with his new girlfriend to the tavern he knew my friends frequented at.
I felt a pair of eyes glance towards me from across the table, looking over I saw Garrick looking at me. His usual hardened look was replaced by a look of concern, his hazel orbs intently focusing on me. He cocked his head towards the back door, signaling me to join him outside. I followed him towards the door, once he got up, and into the cool evening air.
I didn't realize by now that I had tears threatening to escape until Garrick pulled me into his chest and wiped a tear from my cheek.
I had been so focused on lessons and training the past couple days, I hadn’t realized how much I bottled up trying to play it off. I was upset, frustrated, and beyond done.
“It’s okay,” he whispered as my shoulders began to shake from my quiet sobs.
Garrick had always been the one that I was closest to. He always somehow caught a glimpse of the ugly side of things in my relationship and was always conveniently there to pick up the pieces when Zach would storm off.
“I’ve got you,” he murmured against my hair.

'Den of Roses & Shadows'
'Prologue'
A/N:This is just a teeny tiny idea I had so I'll just do it because why not & bc my pookie requested it.First person POV btw.💗💗
'A dragon without its rider is a tragedy.A rider without their dragon is dead',is a phrase I heard ever since since I was a little kid.My past sucks,a lot,but I learned to suck it up and move on.
I've never had any family, nor parents, since they didn't want me,or so I came to believe while growing up,so they left me to rot and die when I was a baby. But thank Malek I didn't.I grew up on the streets ever since I can remember and I've been surviving by myself since then, not without people beating, cursing,or even spitting on me,the usual, but I managed to scrap up stuff to survive, but just enough to keep me alive, and I had no friends, because unlike most people,I was all alone, only by myself, and nobody cared enough to even speak to me,because who would associate themselves with the 'poor, dirty street rat',after all.But all the scars, all the bruises, all the trauma, the abuse and everything I want to forget,to delete, were inflicted by humans.Because that's what people do.They break. They use. They replace. And once you are of no use to them, they throw you away and dispose of you like trash. And that's something I had to learn the hard way.
When I was thirteen,it happened. The only 'family' I can say I knew, was my uncle, though I can't call him family, because he threw me in the water,in the ocean, off of a cliff,to drown, and I got injured pretty badly back then, but I survived that,and...I still remember it vividly from back then, even though I was young, many things stuck, because what I try so desperately to forget,my heart remembers, and even in dreams I am haunted by those, and dreams are just mirrors of the soul, after all,so all the nightmares depict traumas that were left unhealed.I wasn't really a 'planned' or 'wanted' kid so I was abandoned.

I was thrown off a cliff and left to drown by my uncle, with no care at all.My uncle was laughing as he heard me scream and watched me swimming to stay afloat. The bastard threw me off right where the currents were strongest, and the depths darkest. He was enjoying the fact that I was in pain.My blood pooled in the water, leaving a stain on the rocks, the blood on myself as well, the scars, the cuts, and how I pathetically crawled to the shore, wet, cold, pale, trembling, looking no more than a walking cadavre at how much more paler and purpleish my already pale body now looked.Once he saw I was alive,he was furious,as if I was no more than an animal, something that needed to be caged, killed.I jumped up,the best I could in my current state and ran until I reached the forest, desperate, blood trailing behind me,so much blood I thought I had actually died and was just a corpse now, while I was desperately running for my life, and him trailing after me.I climbed the mountains, barefoot and bare handed, because I was only wearing a long, torn, raggedy dress, the only clothing he had ever provided me.I climbed, ignoring the sharp pain hitting my body, just to escape him and live. And despite my condition,I made it to the top,and he didn't bother following all the way up,as he never once, not even when he was hunting, followed what he considered to be useless.I was bloody, cut, injured, tired, wet, cold and trembling, with cuts from the sharp rocks of the mountains. But alas,I had made it.Somehow.I actually think Malek has favorites now,and I might be one of them. But I soon fell unconscious due to the blood loss.I woke up to an elderly lady looking down at me.Where I was,I did not know, but I was thankful. She seemed kind. And she turned out to be kind, and to be a healer.Just my luck.I couldn't help but wonder:was she the one who found me?

Back to present
I remember that day so vividly. It's the day that left me with a few scars. Not physical,at least not only.Scars are not only physical,or so I believe.I have grown to learn that you are either the snake or the little mouse that gets eaten by the snake. And I will no longer be the helpless little mouse.
I've got nothing to loose anymore, which in the eyes of some people, makes me dangerous. But that's in the past. For now...I have to pass conscription day.
Pushing crimson strands out of my face,I walk towards the line, waiting.
My current life plan for now was simple:to throw myself off of a cliff as soon as possible. It is what it is.If not, fuck it and slay my enemies,in the totally normal way, definitely not planning someone's murder already.

Hi! Sorry to bomb you with another idea ( and absolutely no rush, as I know you probably have a full plate currently!)
But here's a cute idea for Garrick fluff content. It's that time of month for reader and she can't get a break with training etc but Garrick makes it his priority for cuddles and interrupts a training or something to make it happen. I just feel Garrick would be the prefect guy to have around for the not so lovely time of the month.
warning: period and period blood
Dragon weeks
Everything hurt. Everything. There wasn't a part of your body that wasn't aching. You had woken up in the middle of the night with a dull pain in your lower stomach but you simply were too exhausted to care and it also wasn't all that bad back then. You had simply pulled at your boyfriend's hand. Carefully nuzzling his warm palm on your stomach as you cuddled into him more. That had been enough of a relief for you and sleep had taken over you almost immediately.
Just your luck had run out by the morning. You had woken up feeling so uncomfortable and sore that even the thought of moving was irritating. Not to mention the ice-cold bed now that Garrick was gone. A sharp pain shot through your stomach as you twisted into yourself. Already feeling the dampness between your thighs. Maker if you will have to wash the sheets too...
That had been the first thing that had made you cry that morning. Hands submerged in ice-cold water you scrubbed at the stains, desperately trying to get them out. The logical side of your brain kept telling you that it was fine. Things like that happen. And most importantly- Garrick didn't care. Your periods had never been on cue. It had always fluctuated - a couple of days give or take. So accidents like that happen if your body didn't send you a warning prior. And it had happened with Garrick too. I mean you two had been together for four years now it was almost inevitable.
"I'll get it", he had muttered that absolutely awful morning when you had got out of bed only to be met with a giant red stain. "No, please, get out", you had tried to push at his chest but it was like moving a mountain. "That's not happening because I'm taken care of this", he said softly scooping you up in his hands and carrying you towards the bath. You had shrieked as his hand brushed over the stain on your clothes as he lifted you but he muttered the same thing, "Still don't care, darling".
After another cry over that you had managed to pull yourself together to get down to breakfast. You knew that neither Garrick nor Xaden would be there because the two had been going on morning patrols. Then probability a handful of meetings. You had a class of first-years to teach and to say that you weren't looking forward to that would have been an understatement. "You good?", Bodhi asked as you slipped to sit next to your friends. "How do I look like?", you said with a roll of your eyes, scrunching your nose up at every food that was on the table. Everything looked and smelled disgusting this morning.
"Well, truthfully like sh-", Imogen's hand came in contact with the back of Bodhi's head. "You just look tired. Have you been sleeping?", she asked instead, an oddly concerned look on her face. Right, so you did look like shit then. "I'm fine, don't fuss over me", you waved her off, standing up to get away from all the smells. "Hey, you didn't eat anything yet", Bodhi protested. "I will later on", you promised with a smile. "Garrick would not be happy with this", Bodhi pushed, pointing to a plate that was for you and still was untouched. "Good thing that he's not here then", you shrugged your shoulders and walked away.
You were more than happy that most cadets had enough respect to not comment on your sloppy performance today. You had ushered them to the mats and for the most part, only commented on their on one combat skills. Casually leaning against pillars or a wall. Water bottle clenched between your fingers. teeth gritted as you tried to keep standing upright. "You'll break your knuckles if you punch like that, engage your wrist", you called out right as the gym door opened with a bang.
You swayed slightly. Catching a pair of pretty, pretty but pissed eyes. "Class is over, out", Garrick called out firmly. Probably making at least a couple of the newbies shat themselves as they hurried away. "Hey, you ain't in charge here", you crocked out but that only earned a deathly glare from your boyfriend. "Move your asses, how long would it take for you to mount if we were under an attack", he snarled, pushing some of the slower ones out himself. "Garrick", you called out in a warning manner.
"Oh don't you Garrick me", he turned with a scowl, "What the fuck are you doing today?". He was a couple of steps away from you now. "I'm working just like you", you said through gritted teeth. You knew that he would see through your bullshit. This was Garrick after all. "You have pain sweat all over your face, and you're hunched over, do you need me to continue?", he was firm but you knew there was nothing but love beneath it. "Geez you sure know how to hype a girl up", you sassed back, brushing your fingers over your face. The movement instantly sent daggers through your body as you whined.
Garrick's arms are around you in an instant. "I'll lift you, might be slightly uncomfortable at first", he informed you not waiting for your approval. "You're not carrying me through the halls like some injured deer", you grumbled, trying to push away from him but only causing yourself more discomfort. "Love, you look like you are about to faint so just give up the hero act and let me look after you", Garrick pressed you closer to him. "How did you even...", you breathed out. "You had pulled my hand onto your stomach", he said simply. "But I do that constantly", you argued back. "Yes, but you had that uncomfortable pout too".
No one even dared to look at you two. Well, considering that Garrick kept his frown on even if he spoke softly to you. "Shower, bed, food, cuddles", he stated as he kicked open your bedroom door. "Was that an order?", you teased him, already feeling slightly better now that he was with you. "One that you better obey or I will tie you to the bed", he grumbled, kneeling to unlace your shoes. "Kinky", you breathed making Garrick chuckle. "Get your cute ass into the shower. I'll fetch you some chicken soup", he muttered, leaning in to kiss you a couple of times. "Can you also ask for something to ease the pain?", you would do it yourself but the thought of going up and down the stairs. Garrick reached for his back pocket, pulling out a little bottle, you gasped in surprise. "You didn't", you muttered. "I keep on one me at all times, love. You should know that by now", he said with a smug smile. "Garrick Tavis you are one of a kind", you muttered leaning in to kiss him once more. "Only for you baby, only for you", he muttered against your lips.
