Explaining The Importance Of The Flag Change In OFMD Episode 10
So, we all remember when Ed decided to change his flag from this (ep2):
Tumblr media
To this (ep10):
Tumblr media
right?
But because episode 10 was such a rollercoaster of emotions, I feel like we overlooked this key detail that has been sitting right in front of us the entire time. But I managed to figure it out today and it blew my mind to pieces.
So I decided to do a bit of a google research and apparently there is a certain code of meaning behind certain symbols on pirate flags.
-The skeleton is obviously an homage to the devil
-The drink in its right hand is hence supposed to signify a toast to the devil/evil/cruelty
-The spear in its left hand means war
But what about the bleading heart that Ed forced Frenchie to add?
Well, when I watched the episode for the first few times I always thought of the bleading heart as a metaphor for Ed’s pain which he wants the whole world to know about by showing it on his flag - but no.
Holy fuck no. It is SO much worse.
The bleading heart means that no quarter will be given.
Now “hold up, hold up”, I hear you say, “What does that mean?”
“To give quarter” was the moral code amongst pirates that when an encountered ship was willing to surrender a fight and their goods their lifes would be spared.
So you might have already guessed it, “no quarter given” means that even if the enemy surrenders their lifes won’t be spared.
Or to put it quite literally:
(The new) flag means death
Ed’s heart and mind have been broken so severly that as a result he went from being the man who told Stede that he couldn’t and wouldn’t kill again, to the man who promises anyone, no matter how innocent they may be a certain death if they get anywhere near him.
This man has been triggered so much by Stede’s crew that he literally dropped them of on an island to forget the pain of the love of his life leaving him yet still decided to keep Frenchie around to have someone who could create this new flag.
He willingly accepted the pain of having someone around who reminded him of Stede just to create a physical promise to himself and to Stede that Blackbeard is back - more cruel than ever - and that Edward Teach is now a relict of the past.

I know everyone is talking about how Stede proved he wasn't blinded by love when he told Izzy "He was gonna burn the world or die trying."
But no one is talking about how he proved that his love for Ed doesn't outweigh his love for his crew, when he found out They Murdered Ed, and still decided to save them.
I cant think of any other romcom hero/heroine that would save the murderers of their one true love can you? Even after hearing about the way Blackbeard tortured them for months, he had every reason to just leave them to the mercy of The Pirate Queen and Auntie.
But saving them proved that if Edward is gone he would still have his pirate family to love in his place. I cant imagine that after everything that happened he wouldn't (or atleast try to) immediately tell the crew that Blackbeard isn't dead and find a way to start the healing process with the crew.
I dont think it's gonna be a one episode deal where everyone just says sorry and move on. We see with the trailers and bts that it looks like Ed is gonna try being just Ed (or jeff) off the ship for awhile. Wearing no black leather anymore.
While some of it is probably Ed's journey of self discovery, i wouldnt be surprised if the crew upright told The Co-Capatians that they dont feel safe with Blackbeard on the ship and they need him off it for awhile. Once he's back to full health and all.
I really do hope we focus on The Blackbeard Crew learning how to deal with their Trauma and Stede’s Crew helping them out for a few episodes.

So since I can’t seem think of anything else, here’s another idea for you :
I think that when Ed headbutts Stede, his eyes are suggesting that he’s waking up violently like when you have a nightmare in a movie and you’re sitting up from the trauma.
Tumblr media
what if all the sequences with him and Hornigold (Hornigold’s ghost? Just this guy in white?) are a sort of fever dream/coma following an injury or him getting knocked out or drowning?
It’s got this blue haze and Hornigold is always behind him like a mentor figure or a guide.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ed jumping with the rock and sinking is a metaphor of him choosing to live (« don’t let go ») and killing his past self(« life begins again »).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And maybe it’s Stede’s words « I love everything about you » etc that get him out of it. But that does not mean that he forgave him, just that he’s going to live.

These two shots have to be from the same scene right? So either they're:
Already reunited and working together at this point
OR
This is going to be where their dramatic reunion takes place
Either way, I'm super excited to watch this moment play out!

HOLD THE FUCK ON
I imagened being innkeepers was cute, and then I thought about it.
Let's look back to episode 4. I think I'm not the first person to point out that these lines are foreshadowing:
Tumblr media
But... it's not the only thing that was said. And the others are much more specific.
Tumblr media
And:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay. Let's accept that episode 4 foreshadows BlackBonnet. What else can we get out of this episode?
It's safe to say that Stede is Annie and Edward is Read.
When Read and Ed are alone, Read says:
Tumblr media
"Scared that you're too old to go back to pirating" Read tells Ed exactly what happened to her, and what happened to him.
With that in mind, from this we cut to Annie and Stede.
Tumblr media
This is a strech, but it could mean something in a metaphorical sense later on.
The ending is particularly interesting.
The possible interpretations are endless, but to stay on the facts: Annie and Read's happy ending is burning their house. Nevertheless, they did get a happy ending.
Tumblr media
I want to close the post with this shot:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We're looking at them through a broken window. A broken window. Whatever your interpretation is, this doesn't paint a promising picture. Something's off.
When the later seasons will come out we'll look back on s2 episode 4 with sheer terror and admiration.

OFMD SPOILERS BEWARE
.
.
.
Guys...
I might be crazy, but bear with me: if the captains were the ones to perform the ceremony for the matelots, imagine what it would be like to have Stede performing Lucius and Pete's wedding 😭
Just to think about what kind of speech he would give, kills me
Imagine Ed's reaction too omg

So, we know that Ed hates being Blackbeard.
Even in the beginning of the season, he expresses his dislike of piracy, saying that his life is boring because he always wins without even having to try. He states that he doesn’t need to be there when the crew invade and loot a ship, because all his enemies need to see is Blackbeard’s flag to jump overboard and kill themselves before Blackbeard gets close enough to touch them.
Ed expresses his interest in Stede’s life outside of piracy, and tells Izzy that he is going to retire (and he will do so by pretending to be Stede, a non-pirate). We eventually learn that Ed killed his abusive father, but has not directly killed anyone since.
He suffers from trauma surrounding violence and abuse.
When Ed shaved his beard off after signing onto the Act of Grace, he told Stede that being Blackbeard was all in the past.
I’m fully aware that all the crew of the Revenge used some amount of black dye (face paint? makeup?) to create a more menacing look, but it’s interesting to me that Izzy coloured his beard black. Yes, Ed coloured his beard black, too. But it’s important to note that Izzy was the one who urged Ed to become Blackbeard again.
Essentially, Izzy was the one to first steer Ed towards re-becoming Blackbeard, and thus has a black beard to symbolize his role in shaping the pirate persona.
Furthermore, when Ed gets throws away his drugs and alcohol (shortly after shooting Izzy, the drive behind Blackbeard), he loses the black dye in his beard.
Ed doesn’t use black dye in his beard when he sails the Revenge into a storm because he is intending to die as Edward Teach.

So I've got this kinda wild headcanon that the captain and crew of the captured French ship in 2x05 recognized Frenchie from somewhere, perhaps his time in service.
If you take a close look, all their eyes go to him. The captain especially looks like he has a moment of recognition before quickly averting his eyes. It's a "blink and you'll miss it" moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since we know so little of Frenchie's backstory, it's fun to theorize!
(Of course, it could also just be the crew recognizing he looks really hot when he's tying people up 👀)

Just gonna point out that Stede's shirt is already off, but Ed is fully clothed. :c They were at different places of "ready" when this started.
Also I get the feeling that Ed would do it to try to help distract Stede from the trauma of getting tortured, watching his whole crew get tortured, and killing a dude. It's a lot, and I think Ed would try to give comfort in one of the only ways he knows how.

!MAJOR OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH SEASON 2 REUNION SPOILERS AHEAD!
Okay so I don‘t know who needs to hear this but guys. I’ve cracked the code:
Tumblr media
So as we all know this is a photo from the offical Warner Bros Press Release that says that it was taken from the second episode, right?
Now I want you all to look at the outfit.
Tumblr media
In this VERY SAME episode we will have: the Lucius reunion. Don’t believe me based on this speculative piece of evidence? Just wait. There’s more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the same episode, they try to get on board of the Revenge.
Tumblr media
And after Black Pete says he doesn’t feel like shooting the arrow for the improv zip line they sent sent Buttons.
But who is that covering up Buttons with his head and standing next to Black Pete? That’s right: Lucius
BUT THAT’S STILL NOT EVERYTHING.
The beard, the haircut, the outfit… Stede is having another gay on gay therapy session with Lucius before they execute the plan to enter the Revenge.
And well guess what? Guess what also happens in the SECOND (!) episode of this season?
Tumblr media
Once they get on board… Ed and Stede reunite.
So let me recap this: We were all so scared that they would take 5 episodes to even see each other again but guess what? 2 episodes. 2 episodes until the crew of the Revenge is properly reunited.
(Of course that still leaves the storm that will probably happen that very next day and seperate them once more to leave us with some unresolved tension, but still. PROGRESS. So much progress already in two (2) episodes)

so i've been thinking about the significance of "for the new unicorn". its cute because it's cheeky- a way to give izzy a gift without calling attention to it. obviously the significance of the crew doing something for izzy is impactful, but to call him the new unicorn is to claim him as a part of the ship- a part that he very recently physically damaged but is still there. izzy as the unicorn is not only a part of the ship, but the lead, the first thing oncoming ships see, and the way that they identify the revenge (ed refers to it as stede's "unicorn ship"). it is such an impactful and sweet detail and i LOVE this show also as others have pointed out, knowing izzy can read is a great development but since we know none of the other crew can, it means lucius wrote the note *sob*

Ok so here's me putting a tiny bandage over the huge wound that is Izzy dying (aka stupid ass hc that makes no sense) (also slight NSFW at the end)
He faked his own death so Ed would finally feel like he's not tied to being Blackbeard anymore. Then he just up and left to find Blackbeard's old ship and became the captain.
(Also Ivan is there too bc he was so hot and I deny him dying. He also left while Ed was in his Kraken era bc he was done with Ed's bullshit)
Then they also found Fang again and he decided to join them as well.
And the rest of Izzy's days were spent sailing the seas and getting railed by men in leather. It's what he deserves.
